(AP) — The top five of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll" target="_blank">the AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;men’s college basketball poll remained unchanged Monday with defending national champ UConn still ahead of mighty Purdue, streaking North Carolina, defensive-minded Houston and Tennessee.

There was plenty of chaos in the rest of the poll, where 10 teams moved at least five positions one way or another.

The Huskies were still the clear No. 1, picking up four more first-place votes after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/uconn-xavier-score-b660ce9e556c2acb9604c6df81d16a8e" target="_blank">a 99-56 rout of Xavier</a>&nbsp;for their eighth straight win. They topped the poll on 48 of 63 ballots from the national panel of media, while the Boilermakers received 14 votes for No. 1 and the Cougars picked up the remaining one.

“I think last January helped us a lot,” UConn coach Danny Hurley said. “We went through an absolutely crushing month of January, so we go into games not necessarily afraid to lose. We walked through the fire and still dominated the NCAA Tournament last year.

“So in a weird way,” Hurley said, “we’re not afraid to drop a game, and we go out and we’re really attacking these games.”

The Boilermakers remained No. 2 after reigning AP player of the year Zach Edey scored 26 points in a win over Rutgers, which made him only&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/purdue-rutgers-score-847ce7b2e2bf53d725f064d38cf8631f" target="_blank">the sixth Big Ten player</a>&nbsp;with at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

The third-ranked Tar Heels extended their winning streak to 10 with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-carolina-florida-state-basketball-score-d5608a09a52021e8f826ee2b931f5f99" target="_blank">wins over Wake Forest and Florida State</a>, while the Cougars&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-state-houston-basketball-score-98e4a9ab2b293aecc2f621c66983e84d" target="_blank">stymied No. 21 BYU and Kansas State</a>&nbsp;to remain at No. 4. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt to remain fifth.

That’s where the wild movement in the poll begins.

Wisconsin rode a slew of losses by top-10 teams, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wisconsin-michigan-state-basketball-score-51637931d32466a46f3fdbd5c99a66b7" target="_blank">wins over Minnesota and Michigan State</a>, to climb seven spots to No. 6 for the Badgers’ best ranking since Dec. 28, 2020. Duke climbed five spots to No. 7, and was followed by Kansas, Marquette and Kentucky, which fell four positions following its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kentucky-south-carolina-basketball-score-0866afdd7440911eae96312c7afd4388" target="_blank">loss to South Carolina last week</a>.

Arizona was No. 11 while Iowa State made the biggest jump, vaulting 11 spots to No. 12 after beating Kansas State and seventh-ranked Kansas. The Cyclones were followed by Creighton, Illinois and Texas Tech, which moved up five spots after its win over Oklahoma and headed into the week atop the Big 12 at 16-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.

Auburn tumbled eight spots to No. 16 after back-to-back losses to Alabama and Mississippi State, and was followed by Utah State and Baylor. New Mexico moved up six positions to No. 19 after ending a nine-game losing streak to Nevada with an 89-55 rout. Florida Atlantic survived a slugfest with North Texas and came in at No. 20.

The final five consisted of Dayton, BYU and Oklahoma — which fell 12 spots after its losses to Texas and Texas Tech — along with Alabama and TCU, who both returned to the poll after falling out earlier this season.

Iowa State made&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-state-kansas-score-75f1a29f02041fbdcc9aadd5f6600058" target="_blank">one of the biggest jumps of the season</a>&nbsp;with its move to No. 12. Wisconsin moved up seven spots, New Mexico moved up six and Duke, Marquette and Texas Tech all advanced five spots.

Their gain came in part at the expense of Oklahoma, which tumbled 12 spots to No. 23. Auburn dropped eight spots and Dayton fell five after the Flyers’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dayton-richmond-basketball-score-c40ad73627b8962652f3e70d1cbb20d1" target="_blank">court-storming loss to Richmond.</a>

Alabama was as high as No. 17 early in the season before falling out on Nov. 27, while TCU joined the Crimson Tide in returning to the Top 25 for the first time since spending a week at No. 19 in mid-January.

Memphis dropped from No. 19 out of the poll after falling to UAB, its third straight loss to an unranked team. Colorado State also dropped out after a loss to Nevada and an overtime loss to Wyoming.

South Carolina went from receiving no votes last week to the most of any school outside the Top 25. The Gamecocks, who were 11-21 last season, improved to 17-3 overall under second-year coach Lamont Paris with their wins over Kentucky and Missouri.

The Big East, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 and SEC each have a top-five team — in fact, each had two in the top 10. But the Big 12 still leads the overall Top 25 count with eight ranked teams after the Horned Frogs returned to the poll this week.

The Hutchinson Community College baseball team announced on Monday that its 2024 season opener will now be this Thursday, February 1 at Hobart-Detter Field.

Trying to take advantage of the warmer weather this week, the Blue Dragons will open the season against Southeast (Nebraska) Community College in a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The season opener was supposed to be Tuesday, February 6 against Central Christian, but with temperatures in the mid- to upper-50s forecast for this Thursday, the Blue Dragons and Bobcats will play two games on Thursday.

The improvised schedule for the Blue Dragons is now:

February 1 – vs. Southeast CC, 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Hobart-Detter Field

The Chiefs beat Lamar Jackson and the No. 1-seeded Baltimore Ravens&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/travis-kelce-nfl-record-postseason-receptions-2d1bde50cb0535dc031e76f59f0000ec" target="_blank">17-10 in the AFC championship</a>&nbsp;game Sunday to advance to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years. A few hours later, Brock Purdy rallied the No. 1-seeded 49ers to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/49ers-lions-score-nfc-championship-bed96677697deb0dfb1fa757288ab4bb" target="_blank">34-31 victory</a>&nbsp;over the Detroit Lions in the NFC title game.

The Chiefs (14-6) are aiming to become the first back-to-back champions since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots did it following the 2003-04 seasons.

Purdy — who was still two years away from being the last pick of the 2022 NFL draft the last time the teams played in the Super Bowl — will try to lead the 49ers (14-5) to a record-tying sixth title in their eighth appearance.

Mahomes and the Chiefs overcame a 20-10 fourth-quarter deficit and beat the 49ers 31-20 to give coach Andy Reid his first Super Bowl victory on Feb. 2, 2020. Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spoiled Kansas City’s repeat bid the following year.

The Chiefs will become just the third team to play in four Super Bowls over a five-year span. Only the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s and the Patriots in the 2000s and 2010s won three Super Bowls in a five-year span.

Mahomes rallied the Chiefs for a 38-35 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl last year. They beat Miami 26-7 in the wild-card round and defeated the Bills 27-24 in Buffalo last week in Mahomes’ first career playoff game on the road besides Super Bowls.

The 49ers were dominated by the Eagles in the NFC title game last year in a game that saw Purdy suffer a significant elbow injury that required surgery. He returned for the season opener and helped them earn a first-round bye. Purdy led a 24-21 comeback win over Green Bay last week and brought the Niners back from a 17-point deficit against the Lions.

Only New England and Pittsburgh have more Super Bowl wins the San Francisco, which last won it following the 1994 season.

🏈 The Super Bowl is set: Mahomes and the Chiefs will face Purdy and the 49ers

BALTIMORE (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were at their magnificent best in the first half, and Kansas City's defense delivered another masterpiece against Lamar Jackson and Baltimore, helping the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years with a 17-10 victory in the AFC championship game Sunday.

Kelce caught 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown, and now the big question at next month's Super Bowl in Las Vegas is whether his girlfriend Taylor Swift will be able to make it there in the middle of her tour. The pop star was on hand again Sunday, and the 34-year-old Kelce was at his best.

“The Chiefs are still the Chiefs,” said Kelce, who broke Jerry Rice’s career record for receptions in the postseason. “And believe it — you’ve got to fight for your right to party! Believe it, baby, we’re going to Las Vegas.”

Kansas City (14-6) will face either San Francisco or Detroit on Feb. 11, and a win would make the Chiefs the first team to win it all in back-to-back seasons since the New England Patriots 19 years ago.

Swift's presence has turned the Chiefs into even more of a glamour team than they already were, but it's been more of a blue-collar performance on the field this season. Aside from Kelce, Mahomes hasn't had the receiving playmakers he's enjoyed in years past.

Instead, the defense has been a big part of why Kansas City won the AFC West and eventually prevailed in two straight road playoff games against Buffalo and Baltimore to win the conference.

“It’s been a heck of a year. We’ve been underdogs the last few games,” Mahomes said. “We never feel like underdogs. We’ve got a lot of guys on this team that know how to win. When the playoffs get around, they’re here to make it happen. And now we’re in the Super Bowl. The job’s not done.”

The Chiefs led 17-7 at halftime, and Justin Tucker's 43-yard field goal with 2:34 to play was the only scoring of the second half. Baltimore kicked deep after that, and on third-and-9, Mahomes connected with Marquez Valdes-Scantling — one of his most-maligned receivers — on a 32-yard pass that sealed the game.

Mahomes went 30 of 39 for 241 yards and a touchdown.

Jackson could win his second MVP after leading Baltimore to the league’s best record and point differential during the regular season, but the Ravens allowed touchdowns on the first two Kansas City possessions and appeared a bit panicky at times after that.

Baltimore (14-5) made undisciplined mistakes all game, while Kansas City looked the part of the team making its sixth straight appearance in the conference title game.

With the Ravens down by 10 in the third quarter, rookie Zay Flowers caught a 54-yard pass to the Kansas City 10 — then was flagged for taunting after the play. Moments later, he fumbled near the goal line and the Ravens ended up with no points.

That was one of several frustrating moments for Baltimore fans, whose city was hosting an AFC championship game for the first time since January 1971, when the Colts beat the Oakland Raiders.

Jackson went 20 of 37 for 272 yards and a touchdown, but Baltimore never really exploited its perceived advantage on the ground. Jackson raced under one of his own tipped passes in the first half for a 13-yard reception, but he also turned the ball over twice, including a forced pass into heavy coverage that was picked off in the end zone with 6:45 left in the game.

Mahomes, meanwhile, competed his first 11 pass attempts, and although the Ravens largely shut Kansas City down after that, the damage was done on a rainy day in Baltimore.

There was some chippy behavior before the game, which included Ravens defensive back Arthur Maulet and a group of Kansas City players having to be separated.

Then the Chiefs forced a three-and-out on the game’s first drive and went 86 yards for th e opening touchdown. Kelce caught a 13-yard pass from Mahomes over the middle on fourth-and-2. Then the star tight end beat All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton for a 19-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.

Jackson answered in his own spectacular way. He broke free for a 21-yard run when Baltimore went for it on fourth-and-1 from its 34. Then the star quarterback ducked out of a near-sack by Leo Chenal, retreated a bit farther back and threw a 30-yard scoring strike to Flowers, who celebrated with teammates by doing the “swag surf” dance that Swift and Chiefs fans did at a recent game.

Kansas City was unbothered. Mahomes drove his team 75 yards in 9:02 — with the help of an acrobatic diving catch by Kelce on one third down toss — and Isiah Pacheco capped the 16-play march with a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs actually missed chances to extend their lead. A sack by Charles Omenihu forced a fumble by Jackson that gave Kansas City the ball at the Baltimore 33. But Kelce was marked just short on a third down catch, and Pacheco was stopped on the ensuing fourth down at the 13.

After a couple of personal fouls on Baltimore helped Kansas City cross midfield late in the half, the Chiefs were flagged for back-to-back holding calls, the second of which wiped out a 33-yard screen pass to Rashee Rice for what would have been a touchdown.

A 9-yard pass to Kelce put Kansas City in position for Harrison Butker’s 52-yard field goal that made it 17-7.

Omenihu left with a knee injury, and star defensive tackle Chris Jones was shaken up in the fourth quarter for the Chiefs.

Chiefs: Kansas City could face a rematch with a Detroit team it lost to 21-20 in the season opener. The Chiefs have not faced the 49ers this season.

Ravens: Baltimore knows it can win a lot of games with Jackson and his talented supporting cast, but getting past the Chiefs seems like an especially daunting task now.

🏈 Mahomes, Kelce are headed back to the Super Bowl after Chiefs shut down Ravens

EMPORIA, Kan. — It was there for the taking, but the Shawnee Heights T-Birds found a way to pull away in the fourth quarter of the Consolation Championship game of the Glacier's Edge Tournament to defeat the Salthawks 51-35.

Hutch trailed by two going into the final quarter, but was only able to produce three points to Shawnee Heights 14 for the finish.

Hutchinson started off slow only scoring three points in the first quarter, but only trailed by five as the T-Birds also had a slow start, partially due to standout KK Emmot collecting two quick fouls which forced her to sit most of the first half. 

Senior point guard Breezy Canady picked up the slack by scoring 11 of her game-high 15 points in the first half.

Azariah Dawes continued to shine by getting the Salthawks back in the game with 13 of her career high 18 points in the second quarter. Dawes scored 46 points over the three games played in Emporia. The senior forward is really gaining confidence over the first half of the season.

Rachel Tomac followed her 14-rebound performance on Friday with another strong game off the bench to score seven points. Kaia Smith added six points along with 16 rebounds in the loss, Grace Posch hit two three point shots in the third quarter for six points, Kolbie Craft had six. Lily Rodriguez added a late free throw to account for her one point.

Shawnee Heights was led with Canady's 15, Emmot had 14, Reianna Vega added 12. Jaidyn Euwer came off the bench to score three, Kaydence Torres and Rachel Swift each scored four.

Hutch (6-5) returns home next week to host Newton on Tuesday and Salina South on Friday at the Salthawk Activity Center.&nbsp;

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Tre King had 21 points and nine rebounds, and No. 23 Iowa State knocked off No. 7 Kansas 79-75 on Saturday.

Iowa State (16-4, 5-2) improved to 13-0 at home this season while enhancing its status as a Big 12 contender. Keshon Gilbert scored 16 points for the Cyclones, and reserve Curtis Jones had 15 points.

All three contributed to a season-best performance from the 3-point line for the Cyclones, who went 14 for 30 from beyond the arc.

“Playing in that atmosphere, you think every shot you're taking is going in,” Iowa State guard Tamin Lipsey said. “Just how loud the fans are and the vibe in the whole arena is so good, you take all the shots with confidence.”

Lipsey finished with 10 points, including a 3-pointer and a layup that helped Iowa State seize control early in the second half. Jones' 3-pointer increased the Cyclones' advantage to 55-43 with 11:44 left.

“Honestly, it was just playing for each other,” King said. “Something we pride ourselves on is being a great unselfish team. Credit to each and every one of these guys for finding us in the spots where we were available.”

Hunter Dickinson led Kansas (16-4, 4-3) with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Kevin McCullar Jr. had 16 points on 5-for-18 shooting, and Johnny Furphy finished with 15.

“When you have a team that usually makes four 3s a game hit 14, it definitely makes it more challenging,” Dickinson said. “It makes it harder to try and stage a comeback.”

Kansas closed to 67-63 on a layup by Dickinson and a fast-break dunk by Furphy. But Iowa State held on.

Gilbert’s layup with 2:43 left lifted the Cyclones to a 74-65 lead. After the Jayhawks rallied again, Gilbert connected on a 3 to make it 77-72 with 41 seconds to go.

“We switched a lot,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We should have been able to get to shooters better. But give them credit. A lot of it was, could we have done better? Yes. But a lot of it was they made shots they haven't been making.”

It was the only scheduled meeting this season for the longtime rivals, due to a shuffle of Big 12 membership. Saturday marked the 257th game between Iowa State and Kansas. The Jayhawks had won eight of the previous 10.

The Cyclones used their defense to slow down the Jayhawks. Kansas began the day as the Big 12 leader in shooting percentage, hitting 50.8% for the season. It got off to a slow start on Saturday and shot 45% (27 for 60) for the game.

🏀 No. 7 Kansas comes up short against No. 23 Iowa State

HOUSTON (AP) — Jamal Shead scored 17 points, J’Wan Roberts added 14 points and six rebounds and No. 4 Houston beat Kansas State 74-52 on Saturday to extend its winning streak to four games.

Roberts and Emanuel Sharp each scored nine points in the first half as Houston built a 41-21 halftime lead. Houston (18-2, 5-2 Big 12) shot 40% and was 7 of 21 on 3-pointers.

“Our Holy Trinity doesn’t change,” Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said. “Defend, rebound and take care of the ball. Do those three things, and you have a chance to win.”

Damian Dunn had 13 points for the Cougars, who have won 17 straight home games. Houston forced 18 turnovers and converted them into 25 points and owned a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.

“Consistency,” Sampson said of Houston’s defense. “I don’t know if our defensive effort was any better against Texas Tech or Central Florida. That’s the way we practice. That’s the standard I hold these kids to.”

Cam Carter scored 16 points and Arthur Kaluma and Dai Dai Ames each added 11 points for Kansas State (14-6, 4-3), which lost its second straight. The Wildcats also shot 40% and were 7 of 21 on 3-pointers.

“They may be the best defensive team I’ve ever seen,” Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said. “It’s just hard to find shots. They do a great job. They’re connected on that end.”

The Cougars jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first 5 ½ minutes on a jumper by L.J. Cryer, but the Wildcats cut the lead to 13-7 on a 3-pointer by Tylor Perry with 12:45 left in the first half.

Houston responded by outscoring Kansas State 16-5 to open up a 29-12 lead on a 3-pointer by Cryer with 6 ½ minutes left in the half. After winning a pair of thriller at Bethel College to open the week, the Kansas Wesleyan basketball teams will travel to Wichita tonight to square off with Friends

The first of these matchups will take place tonight at the Garvey Center, with the women's game set to begin at 5:00.

Women's Game: Kansas Wesleyan (10-9, 8-5), Friends (14-5, 11-2)

KWU and Friends are 3-3 in their last six games but the Coyotes won the previous six. The Falcons prevailed 84-61 on November 15 in Mabee Arena in the first game this season and leads the series 21-18 since February, 2006.

The Falcons entered the week having won five in a row. They defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan 78-50 last Wednesday in Bartlesville and downed Bethel 77-67 Saturday in Wichita. Friends was one game behind conference co-leaders Saint Mary and Tabor in the KCAC standings.

Rayland Garner scored 24 points and Taylor Jackson had 19 and 12 rebounds in the Falcons' victory over KWU on November 15 in Mabee Arena. The game was tied at 54 after three quarters before Friends pulled away the final 10 minutes.

EMPORIA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk girls bounced back after their loss to Derby in the first round of the Emporia Glacier's Edge Invitational in fine fashion to defeat Wichita Southeast 49-34 on Friday.

Hutchinson (6-4) now andvances to the consolation championship game to play for 5th place in the 50th Glacier's Edge Tourney versus Shawnee Heights on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Emporia.

The Salthawks jumped out on the Golden Buffaloes quickly with a 10-0 run to lead 14-4 at the end of the first quarter. Southeast was not able to score until the 4:46 mark of the first quarter.

Hutch used a switching defense alternating between a zone and man-to-man that held the Buffs to only one field goal and a free-throw in the second quarter.

The second have was more of the same as Hutchinson to 41-20 with 10 points being scored by Salthawk senior Azariah Dawes. Rachel Tomac came off the bench to completely own the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with her nine point mostly on offensive putbacks.

Hutchinson was led by Dawes 16 points followed by Grace Posch, Tomac, and Kaia Smith each with nine. Kolbie Craft added four and Ava Krone came off the bench to score two.

Wichita Southeast (4-8) suffered their sixth loss in a row, but will play for 7th against Lawrence Free State on Saturday.

Shawnee Heights 73, Lawrence Free State 24

Emporia will face Blue Valley in the Championship, Derby will play versus Highland Park in the 3rd place game on Saturday afternoon.

Southeast was not able to score until the 4:46 mark of the first quarter.Hutch used a switching defense alternating between a zone and man-to-man that held the Buffs to only one field goal and a free-throw in the second quarter.The Salthawks were up 21-7 at halftime.The second have was more of the same as Hutchinson to 41-20 with 10 points being scored by Salthawk senior Azariah Dawes. Rachel Tomac came off the bench to completely own the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with her nine point mostly on offensive putbacks.Hutchinson was led by Dawes 16 points followed by Grace Posch, Tomac, and Kaia Smith each with nine. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The National Football League has urged teams for years to hire more minority head coaches. That mission finally seems to be paying off. Four minority head coaches have been hired this year: Atlanta's Raheem Morris, New England's Jerod Mayo, Las Vegas' Antonio Pierce and Carolina's Dave Canales. That brings the number of coaches of color entering the 2024 season to nine, the most in league history. Seattle and Washington have yet to fill their vacancies. Jaeger went ahead moments after Thomas Detry's third shot landed well past the hole and spun back into the pond fronting the green, leading to a double bogey that cost him the lead. Jaeger shot a 1-over 73 on a tough day of high scores. He was at 11-under 205 through 54 holes, one shot ahead of Matthieu Pavon and Nicolai Hojgaard. Detry was two shots back after his blunder on the 18th led to a 73.

Deebo Samuel cleared to play for 49ers in the NFC title game vs. Lions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has been cleared to play in the the NFC championship game against the Detroit Lions after leaving last week's game with a shoulder injury. Samuel was a full participant in practice Friday and had no injury designation for the game. Detroit will be without left guard Jonah Jackson, who injured his knee in last week's win over Tampa Bay but will have second-team All-Pro center Frank Ragnow available for the game. Ragnow has been slowed by injuries to his ankle, toe, knee and back but has no injury designation for the game.
