WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State announced their latest 2024 Pizza Hut Hall of Fame class of inductees on Monday, and the class includes former Buhler standout golfer Taryn Torgerson.

She golfed for the Wichita State women's golf program from 2014 to 2018 and was the 2018 individual champion in the American Athletic Conference, was the 2016 individual champion in the Missouri Valley Conference and led the team to a 2016 MVC championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

Torgerson finished her Wichita State career first in tournament titles (6), first in lowest career stroke average (75.55), first in lowest single season stroke average (73.26) and first in lowest 54-hole stroke average (226.64).

Her father Brendan is the boys and girls golf coach at Buhler and coached Taryn during her career at Buhler High School.&nbsp; 

A dinner for the inductees is set for 6 p.m. on Jan. 27 at the Beggs Ballroom on the Wichita State campus, while the induction ceremony is scheduled for halftime of Wichita State's Jan. 28 (2 p.m.) men's basketball game against SMU.

Cost for the dinner is $50 per person, and paid reservations can be made online at goshockers.com or by calling the Shocker Ticket Office at 316/978-FANS or in person at the WSU Ticket Office located on the south side of Charles Koch Arena.

The addition of this year's class brings the total of former coaches and student-athletes in the Hall of Fame to 160, while there are 13 at-large selections.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vikings confirm Cousins is done for the season with a torn Achilles tendon in a devastating blow

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Kirk Cousins is out for the rest of the season with a torn right Achilles tendon. The Minnesota Vikings announced the news after his first career injury put a somber tone on their three-game winning streak. The Vikings said the MRI exam on Cousins confirmed their initial fear. The 12th-year quarterback went down in pain in the fourth quarter at Green Bay after planting his foot in the grass to try to avoid a sack. He limped off the field and was unable to put weight on his right leg.

Lions lean on Jahmyr Gibbs' legs, Jared Goff's arm in 26-14 win over offensively challenged Raiders

DETROIT (AP) — Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs ran for a season-high 152 yards and a touchdown, Jared Goff threw for 272 yards with a score, and the Detroit Lions beat the Las Vegas Raiders 26-14. The NFC North-leading Lions stalled on three early drives, settling for field goals, before Goff threw an 18-yard strike to rookie Sam LaPorta to put them ahead 16-7 late in the first half. Goff threw a pick-6 to Marcus Peters early in the third quarter, allowing Las Vegas to pull within two points. But Detroit went back ahead by two scores on Gibbs' 27-yard touchdown run. Jimmy Garoppolo threw for just 126 yards for the Raiders.

Rangers slugger Adolis García hurts left side, leaves World Series Game 3 and goes to hospital

PHOENIX (AP) — Texas Rangers slugger Adolis García left Game 3 of the World Series against Arizona in the eighth inning after hurting his left side on a swing. He went to a hospital for an MRI. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy says: "We're being optimistic there but we'll know more tomorrow." The AL Championship Series MVP grabbed his left side while coming out of the batter's box on his flyout against Luis Frías. When García got to first base, he bent over and put both hands on his knees.

Dodgers' Mookie Betts hopes MLB teams consider signing 'awesome guy' Trevor Bauer, report says

PHOENIX (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Mookie Betts says he hopes major league teams consider signing pitcher Trevor Bauer this winter. Betts told the Los Angeles Times at the World Series in Phoenix that such a move is "something to think about." Betts was at the World Series at the invitation of Major League Baseball to provide content for its social media platforms. The Dodgers released Bauer in January after he was suspended 194 games for violating baseball's policy on domestic violence and sexual assault. Betts says Bauer is "an awesome pitcher." Betts says his personal experience with Bauer "is not anything remotely close to what everyone else's experience is. I love him."

Pasadena police investigate report of missing items from Colorado locker room following UCLA game

The police in Pasadena, California, have confirmed an investigation is underway after a report that several items went missing from the Colorado locker room while the Buffaloes played No. 20 UCLA at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Lisa Derderian, the city's public information officer, says UCLA is in communication with law enforcement, Rose Bowl Stadium officials and the University of Colorado on the matter. The production crew of "Well off Media," which chronicles the Buffaloes, posted a video on YouTube where players gathered around the bus after a 28-16 loss to the Bruins and discussed items being taken from inside the locker room, including jewelry.

Mary Lou Retton says she's 'overwhelmed' with love and support as she recovers from rare pneumonia

American gymnastics legend Mary Lou Retton says she is "overwhelmed with all the love and support" she has received and is slowly recovering with family after being hospitalized with a rare form of pneumonia earlier this month. The 55-year-old Retton posted a statement Monday on Instagram in her first public comment since being in intensive care in a Texas hospital. Retton said she was "beyond blessed for the opportunity to make this statement" and is staying positive through what she knows is a long and slow recovery process.

The Patriots have the history. The Chiefs have the juice.

New England is bringing its six Super Bowl trophies. How about a yacht? Kansas City has that, not to mention&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/top-quarterbacks-mahomes-tagovailoa-allen-jackson-hurts-0f9f5979e44d86ec227484827fdb22f0">the star quarterback</a>&nbsp;and tight end.

They’re all headed to Frankfurt to take part in two weeks of American football because beyond the games, there are German fans to win over. A lot of them.

“Most Germans don’t have a team yet,” said Alexander Steinforth, the NFL’s general manager for Germany.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/carolina-panthers-seattle-seahawks-tampa-bay-buccaneers-kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-0bea6a57c5a927f0cf57d1d4cc6b1be1">fandom is in the millions</a>&nbsp;— a barely tapped gold mine for teams and a league which have mostly maxed out domestically. The league says it has 18 million casual fans — that would be roughly one in five residents of Germany — and 3.6 million “avid” ones.

“We are reaching that state of maturity where you see fans are actively seeking out teams and are looking for teams that they can follow," Steinforth said. "That’s why the market is so exciting for franchises to be active in because right now they have a massive opportunity to pick up fans.”

The Chiefs go first — they’ll play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. A week later, the Patriots face the Indianapolis Colts. Both games are at Deutsche Bank Park.

The Chiefs and Patriots both have commercial rights in Germany under the league’s&nbsp;<a href="https://operations.nfl.com/updates/the-game/nfl-announces-growth-of-global-markets-program-with-the-addition-of-two-new-clubs-and-four-new-markets/">global markets program</a>, as do the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons. It means they can sign corporate sponsorship deals, hold events to attract fans and sell merchandise like they do in their home markets.

For Kansas City, life is good. They’re the defending Super Bowl champion. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the reigning MVP. Travis Kelce is having another big season. Oh yeah, the tight end also appears to be in a relationship with global megastar Taylor Swift, which only&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-nfl-gen-z-be42bde423a35c8f4c34bd9a18327b07">adds to the buzz</a>.

“It’s perfect timing for us as a franchise and we’re going to be very aggressive in taking full advantage of that,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said of the team’s overall momentum.

The Chiefs have spent $1 million in preparation and fan events for Frankfurt, Donovan said.

The team is docking a Chiefs-themed yacht in the Main River for fans to board and get a selfie with the Lombardi trophy from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2023-kansas-city-chiefs-philadelphia-eagles-43a1fb387f63438c1eea23b6a4244d95">their 38-35 win</a>&nbsp;over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Both the Chiefs and Patriots wanted last year’s first-ever regular-season game in Munich, but that went to the Bucs and Tom Brady, in part because NFC teams had the extra home game.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-tom-brady-tampa-bay-buccaneers-new-england-patriots-nfl-d3624bfc6649100cbd7a090c1bdcc942">Bucs beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16</a>&nbsp;at Allianz Arena in what Steinforth said was the NFL's “most-successful international game” in terms of viewership and merchandise sales. He added that German viewership this season on free-to-air broadcaster RTL is up “9 to 10%" from a year ago.

Though five teams are in the market, the Chiefs and Patriots “have been the most aggressive and probably have the most foothold,” Donovan said. New England has some advantages, he added, ”because they’ve been there longer and they have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-soccer-sports-germany-europe-098f5fcf8d1bdf1646f776c1e4f3089d">some German players</a>&nbsp;and German radio and things like that.

“We definitely want to be No. 1 in Germany” and elsewhere, he said.

New England saw a surge of interest after selecting German offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer in 2009. They began pushing&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/patsdeutsch/status/1712113439383101596">German content</a>&nbsp;into the country. The Super Bowl titles kept coming, all coinciding with NFL games airing weekly on free TV network ProSieben. The league switched to the bigger RTL starting this season.

“I would say we are the No. 1 (team) or we have been for many, many years, but obviously we’re running up against the Kansas City Chiefs, who are doing really well right now and their popularity is soaring,” said Joe Dorant, the team’s senior director of business development for the region.

All six of New England’s Lombardi trophies will be on display for fans and photos at “Patriots Haus” downtown, and alumni will be greeting the locals.

“I don’t think we can,” Dorant said. “The only thing we can do is show the German people what the Patriot way is. We’ve been successful for many, many years — for a 20-year span. No other team can say that.”

Kansas City already had the fastest-growing Instagram and TikTok engagement in Germany among NFL teams and that was “pre-Taylor,” Donovan said. Among the five teams in the market, the Chiefs have the most Instagram followers on their German account, but the Panthers have the edge on TikTok.

“I don't know at this point if she’s going to Germany or not,” Donovan said.

Kelce is sure to face questions about Swift from the locals. Brady was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-tampa-bay-buccaneers-tom-brady-nfl-sports-0e7614a0cd2597e3949b4eb7d2796c82">grilled about his personal life</a>&nbsp;following his divorce from Gisele Bündchen. A TV producer also&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/AP_NFL/status/1591148718757384193">presented Brady with Bavarian lederhosen</a>.

Teams have hired German agencies and advisers to facilitate deals — the Chiefs' sponsorship agreements include fast food and pet food — but they didn't need help figuring out they can gain visibility through Germany's top sport: soccer.

Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich has more than 40 million Instagram followers. The Patriots are tops in the NFL with 5 million. The Chiefs' German account is just under 46,000.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.panthers.com/news/panthers-bundesliga-eintracht-frankfurt-to-promote-nfl-football-in-germany">Panthers partnered with Eintracht Frankfurt</a>, the Bundesliga club that plays in Deutsche Bank Park.

New England&nbsp;<a href="https://www.patriots.com/news/patriots-host-german-men-s-national-soccer-team-at-gillette-stadium-ahead-of-int">hosted the German national soccer team</a>&nbsp;in Foxborough. The Chiefs have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=KLRN5dXi62o">linked up with Bayern</a>&nbsp;through the Hunt family-owned FC Dallas.

The Panthers and Falcons would figure to be next in line. Germany is slated to host one game next year — the NFL confirmed on Monday it will be in Munich — and one in 2025.

The Patriots hope to play in Germany as often as possible.

“We would have no issue with playing a game next year and the year after — however many games that they ask us to play,” Dorant said.

The Chiefs and Patriots are the designated “home” teams in Frankfurt. The Chiefs are such a big draw that other teams don't want to give up a visit from them.

“We’d like to be more aggressive in being in the international markets more often,” Donovan said. “Right now, we’d only do it as an away team ideally, or during those years when we have the extra home game.”

It’s widely expected the NFL will extend its deal in Germany. The league opened an office in Dusseldorf with a capacity for 25 employees.

“That’s the idea, to grow into it,” Steinforth said.

EL DORADO – Three points away from what might have been a devastating season-finale loss, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;stepped up just in time for the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team on Monday at Butler.

Tied at 12-12 in the fifth set, Dean had a kill, solo block and block assist on the final three rallies of the match to power the Blue Dragons to a 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 15-12 victory at the Power Plant to snap a seven-match losing streak to the Grizzlies.

The Blue Dragons finish the regular season 24-14 and tied Colby for second place in the Jayhawk Conference at 11-5. The Blue Dragons win the tie-breaker with Colby for the second seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons will play host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the opening round.

Hutchinson won the first two sets and dropped the third. The Blue Dragons had leads of 12-5 and 14-8 in the fourth set, but the Grizzlies rallied force a fifth set, outscoring Hutchinson 17-6 over the remainder of the fifth set.

🏐 Blue Dragons close out regular season with 5-set win at Butler

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks have been named the Cheez-It National Team of the Week following its 38-33 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma on Saturday. The award, presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), was announced Monday.

Kansas improved to 6-2 on the year and 3-2 in Big 12 play with its first win over Oklahoma since 1997. The Jayhawks outscored OU 12-6 in the fourth quarter and took the lead for good following a nine-yard touchdown run by Devin Neal with 55 seconds to play. KU’s defense then held the Sooners scoreless on their final drive, closing out the game when Kwinton Lassiter broke up an OU pass attempt in the end zone on the final play of the game.

The win was the first for Kansas over a top 10 team since the Jayhawks defeated No. 5 Virginia Tech in the 2008 Orange Bowl. It was also KU’s first regular season win over a top 10 team since defeating No. 4 Colorado in 1995 and the first top 10 victory at home since defeating No. 2 Oklahoma in 1984.

In the victory, the Jayhawks were led by Neal, who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, and Daniel Hishaw Jr., who ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Jason Bean threw for 218 yards and rushed for a touchdown as the Jayhawks totaled 443 yards of total offense against OU.

Defensively, Kansas was led by Kenny Logan Jr., who recorded 10 tackles and Marvin Grant, who had 8. Mello Dotson got the scoring started with a 37-yard interception returned for a touchdown in the first quarter, which is KU’s third defensive touchdown of the season. The Jayhawks had four tackles for loss, one sack and two fumble recoveries, with Cornell Wheeler and JB Brown both recording takeaways.

The Football Writers Association of America’s National Team of the Week was created as part of the Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll in 2002. Since then, it has been awarded each week during the regular season by various committees that have included members of the FWAA All-America Committee, the association’s board of directors and its past presidents. For the 2023 season, Cheez-It will present the national team of the week with the bowl partner, Florida Citrus Sports, host of the Cheez-It Bowl and Pop-Tarts Bowl, both played in Orlando.

This is the sixth time that Kansas has earned the FWAA National Team of the Week award, and first since its 57-56 overtime victory at Texas in 2021. Kansas also won the award during the 2019, 2016, 2008 and 2007 seasons.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In an exhibition fundraiser to benefit the Maui Strong Fund, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 82-75 at the State Farm Center. Redshirt senior Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 25 points and senior transfer Hunter Dickinson added 22 points to lead the Jayhawks on Sunday evening. The two teams partnered together to make the game a fundraiser to provide financial resources for rapid response and recovery for the devastating wildfires in Maui.

They turned three touchdown passes from Russell Wilson and five takeaways into a 24-9 win in cold conditions in Denver. Safety Justin Simmons had a pair of takeways and the Broncos beat Patrick Mahomes for the first time in 13 tries. Mahomes was added to the injury report before the game because of an illness and he was held without a touchdown throw for the first time since a 22-9 Chiefs' win over the Broncos in 2021.

Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said the team fears the four-time Pro Bowl QB hurt his Achilles tendon. If the tendon is torn, Cousins’ season would be over. The 35-year-old veteran limped to the sideline after suffering the non-contact injury in the fourth quarter of a 24-10 win at Green Bay. Stafford couldn’t finish a lopsided loss at Dallas because of a thumb injury. Pickett and Taylor both injured ribs.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers combined for zero errors over the first two games of the Fall Classic, which is the first time that’s happened since 2018. That’s no accident. The two teams made the fewest errors in the big leagues during the regular season and have a combined eight finalists for Gold Glove awards. The Rangers have five of them season, including catcher Jonah Heim, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, second baseman Marcus Semien, shortstop Corey Seager and right fielder Adolis García, who has one of the best outfield arms in the big leagues. The D-backs' finalists are catcher Gabriel Moreno, center fielder Alek Thomas and first baseman Christian Walker.

PHOENIX (AP) — Max Scherzer is being glued together to make his start in World Series Game 3. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has a cut on his pitching thumb that developed when he returned Oct. 18 from a five-week layoff caused by a strained muscle in his right shoulder. He said it won’t bother him when he starts for the Texas Rangers on Monday with the Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks tied 1-1. Scherzer says “Found a way to use cotton and Super Glue" and calls it "a little arts and crafts in the training room.”

UNDATED (AP) — Ryan Blaney will race for his first Cup championship after qualifying for NASCAR’s title-deciding finale with a Sunday win at Martinsville Speedway. William Byron, who led the Cup Series with six wins this season, earned the fourth and final slot in the championship by limping to a 13th-place finish at the Virginia short track. Byron had padded his position with bonus points earned all season and edged Denny Hamlin, who finished third at Martinsville on Sunday, by eight points to qualify for NASCAR’s championship. Blaney and Byron will race Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson next Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, where the Cup championship will go to the highest-finishing driver.

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — American hockey player Adam Johnson has died after a “freak accident” during a game in England on Saturday, according to his team. The 29-year-old from Minnesota was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when he suffered a slashed neck during the second period. Johnson played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League before spending the 2020-21 season in Sweden with the Malmo Redhawks. He went on to play in the American Hockey League and Germany before agreeing to join Nottingham for this season.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In an exhibition fundraiser to benefit the Maui Strong Fund, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 82-75 at the State Farm Center. Redshirt senior Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 25 points and senior transfer Hunter Dickinson added 22 points to lead the Jayhawks on Sunday evening.

The two teams partnered together to make the game a fundraiser to provide financial resources for rapid response and recovery for the devastating wildfires in Maui.

“We raised well north of a million dollars, so it was good,” said Head Coach Bill Self. “They did a great job with selling as many tickets as possible. There were a lot of positive things that came from it and I do think it was much more uncomfortable of environment than our players thought it would be.”

Kansas won the tip and traded back-and-forth buckets with Illinois for the first 10 minutes of regulation, with McCullar Jr. scoring 11 of Kansas’ first 15 points. Defense picked up as both teams struggled to find any momentum, until the Illini went on a 7-0 scoring run with five minutes left in the first half, stretching their lead to 31-23. The Jayhawks responded with back-to-back alley-oop dunks from Dickinson.

Illinois closed out the half with a pair of three-pointers as they went into the locker room with a 43-37 lead. Led by 18 first-half points from McCullar Jr., Kansas shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the field and scored 26 points in the paint. Illinois shot 50.0 percent (17-of-34) from the field, which included seven three-pointers.

The second half opened with a layup and a mid-range jumper from Dickinson, followed by a dunk from KJ Adams Jr. An uncontested layup by redshirt senior Dajuan Harris Jr. tied the game up at 68 apiece with five minutes to play.

A battle of the big men commenced, as Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game, which was answered by a hook-shot from Dickinson. With two minutes left in the contest, Illinois stretched its lead to six after a back-door layup from guard Justin Harmon.

As a team, Kansas shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the floor and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc. Illinois shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor and 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from beyond the arc. The Jayhawks were led by 25 points from McCullar Jr., 22 points from Dickinson and 14 points from Adams Jr. Harris Jr. dished out eight assists to go along with his six points, two steals and one blocked shot.

“I thought our mindset was okay,” added Self. “It exposed us and it did exactly what we wanted it to do. I didn’t think some of our newcomers responded like we hoped they would, but if you can only get three steals as a team on the road you aren’t going to win. We executed well in the second half so there were some good things that happened in that regard.”

🏀 Kansas Drops Maui Strong Exhibition Contest Versus Illinois

When the discussion turned to turnovers,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7584">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;leaned into the microphone and spoke to remind everyone he committed none of those mistakes.

Wichita State defeated NCAA Division II Rogers (Okla.) State 74-53 in an exhibition game at Koch Arena on Sunday afternoon. 

Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/paul-mills/1128">Paul Mills</a>&nbsp;will look at video, crunch numbers and confer with his assistants to get a full picture of the performance, but he was sure of Pohto's value without review.

Pohto, a junior center, scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out two assists. No turnovers, as he mentioned, and Mills loved that. He credited with Pohto with creating five other scoring opportunities that didn't turn into assists.

"His decision-making was great," Mills said. "Zero turnovers is pretty impressive.

"Pohto's passing and ball-handling stood out because several of his teammates were not as adept at keeping the ball in the right hands. The Shockers had 10 first-half turnovers, leading to 11 points for Rogers State. The Shockers cut that number to seven in the second half and they put the game away in the final seven minutes by avoiding those mistakes.

Shocker coaches will carefully monitor those numbers. Mills' Oral Roberts team excelled at keeping the ball on offense, usually ranking among the nation's leaders in avoiding turnovers. Last season, ORU averaged 9.4 turnovers a game, tied for fifth nationally.

"I don't do well with turning it over," Mills said.

Pohto is good with the ball because of his natural instincts and because he can see the court and make quick, simple passes. One simple way to score is throw the ball to Ballard near the basket, as Pohto did for one of his assists.

"I've got to learn how to throw lobs," Pohto said. "Quincy can really get them."

Too often his teammates dribbled into traffic and lost the ball or watched as their imprecise pass went the other way.

"There's simpler decisions to make without making it that complicated," Mills said, describing one such scenario. "You've just to go through the film and have guys understand that.

"Pohto started a forward with center&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/quincy-ballard/7586">Quincy Ballard</a>&nbsp;in a two-big lineup that has worked for the Shockers. Mills said those two graded out well in the scrimmage against Iowa as a combination. On Sunday, they overwhelmed a smaller team. Ballard finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Pohto led WSU with a plus-25 plus-minus ranking and Ballard was at plus-21.No matter how things unfolded, the Shockers noticed that Mills rarely seem bothered. He took in the highlights and mistakes with equal calm."

"Pohto said.Mills said that is how operates. He is more animated in practice. By game time, a player should know his job and not need to watch his coach for feedback. The focus should be on performing, not worrying about a coach stomping or yelling.

"Good coaches, in my opinion, they do their work in practice," Mills said.

 "I don't need them paying attention to me and my reactions. That should have been handled in a film session and behind closed doors.

"The Shockers go back behind closed doors until the Nov. 6 opener against Lipscomb at Koch Arena.&nbsp;&nbsp;

DENVER (AP) — Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes, Justin Simmons had two of Denver's five takeaways and the Broncos stymied an ill Patrick Mahomes in snapping their 16-game losing streak to Kansas City with a 24-9 win over the Chiefs on Sunday.

The Broncos (3-5) were serenaded off the field to the sound of Taylor Swift's “Shake it Off” blaring throughout Empower Field. Swift wasn't on hand to witness&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-travis-kelce-taylor-swift-analysis-nfl-95b2a5cf818b39649c1e6ed49a45d315">Travis Kelce's six catches for 58 yards</a>&nbsp;and the awful day by the Chiefs (6-2).

The Broncos handed Mahomes his first AFC West road loss in beating Kansas City's quarterback for the first time in 13 tries.

Denver made a 14-9 halftime lead hold up by controlling the clock and keeping Mahomes and Kelce cooling their cleats on the sideline in the second half. Kansas City had just three second-half possessions before getting the ball back for one meaningless snap at the end.

The Chiefs punted, muffed a punt that led to a touchdown, turned it over on downs and lost the ball on an interception in the second half.

The Broncos came in averaging a meager 22 carries per game, next to last in the league, but on a bitterly cold day they ran it 40 times for 153 yards and threw it just 19 times.

Javonte Williams led the way with 85 yards on 27 carries and added three receptions for 13 yards and a touchdown. Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton also caught TD passes for the Broncos, who won back-to-back games for the first time since Weeks 2-3 of last season.

The Broncos blew the game open when rookie Drew Sanders recovered Mecole Hardman's muffed punt at the Chiefs 10-yard line, and two plays later Wilson hit Sutton in the left corner to make it 21-9.

Nobody had scored more than 20 points on Kansas City this season.

Mahomes drove the Chiefs (6-2) to the Denver 27 but Skyy Moore couldn't bring in a perfectly placed toss in the end zone on fourth down with 7:35 left.

Simmons, who had a fumble recovery in the first half, intercepted Mahomes with about 5 minutes left and the Broncos added a short field goal with 31 seconds left.

The Chiefs, who never trailed by more than 10 points in any of their 16 consecutive victories against Denver, fell behind 14-3 early on and never recovered despite pulling to 14-9 on a Harrison Butker field goal as the first half expired.

The Broncos ate up almost 8 1/2 minutes on the opening drive in the third quarter, but they came away empty-handed when safety Justin Reid got away with an early jump to block Wil Lutz's 38-yard field goal try.

Reid was whistled for a similar infraction in the waning minutes.

The Broncos had a trio of first-half takeaways, including two turnovers by Mahomes, who was intercepted by cornerback Ja'Quan McMillian and strip-sacked by Baron Browning with Jonathon Cooper recovering the loose ball.

Wilson threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Williams and connected with Jeudy from 11 yards out for a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter.

That marked the biggest lead by Denver since their 16-game skid against the Chiefs began on Nov. 15, 2015.

The Broncos couldn't capitalize on McMillian's interception at midfield when Wilson fumbled out of bounds short of the first-down marker on fourth-and-2 from the Kansas City 40.

Mahomes threw a 39-yard pass to Rashee Rice, setting up Butker's 34-yard field goal to make it 14-6.

Mahomes completed 24 of 38 passes for 241 yards with two interceptions and three sacks. It was the first time he was held without a touchdown throw since Dec. 5, 2021, in a 22-9 win over Denver.

Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, recently posted on social media that the couple’s two children had been ill with a stomach bug and that she had contracted the illness as well.

GREAT BEND – Two points away from a first-set victory on Saturday night at Barton in their bid for a share of the Jayhawk Conference lead, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team wound up dropping a three-set match to No. 19 Barton.

 </figure>By Hutchinson CC Sports InformationGREAT BEND – Two points away from a first-set victory on Saturday night at Barton in their bid for a share of the Jayhawk Conference lead, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team wound up dropping a three-set match to No. 19 Barton.The Cougars scored the final seven points of the opening set and went on for a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 victory over the Blue Dragons at the Barton Gym.Hutchinson fell to 23-14 overall and 9-5 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons close out the regular season at 1 p.m. on Monday against Butler. Barton clinched the conference title outright with the victory and improved to 24-5 overall and 13-3 in league play.The Blue Dragons hit .239 for the match, but struggled by siding out only at 48 percent. The Dragons also had a season-low two blocks. Barton hit .254 and sided out at 55 percent. The Cougars had six blocks and nine service aces.Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons with 14 kills and hit .286 on 42 attacks. A Dean kill pulled the Dragons within 10-7. Trailing 13-10, Dean and Golden had kills on Briseno had an ace to pull Hutchinson within 13-12. Barton had a 4-0 run to open an 18-13 lead. The Dragons had a 3-0 run on kills from Briseno, Dean and Golden to pull with 24-22, but Barton closed out the set to take a 2-0 match lead.Set 3: Barton used a 5-1 run to start the third set. The Dragons had runs of 3-0 and 4-0 to pull within 10-7. The Blue Dragons never got over the jump. A 4-0 run gave Barton a 23-17 lead. Hutchinson went on a late 4-1 run to trail 24-20. The Dragons ultimately fell 25-21.
