INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — Waymond Jordan Jr. scored twice in the first half as No. 1 Hutchinson (6-0, 2-0) made quick work of Independence (1-5, 0-4) Saturday.
Jordan Jr. scored his first touchdown on the ground from two yards out. The score came after Indy's first turnover when quarterback Isaiah Nathaniel muffed a shotgun snap that was recovered by Hutchinson's DeMarcus Johnson Jr.
Nestus Burger hit a 33-yard field goal early in the second quarter before Jordan Jr. scored again on the ground, this time from 29 yards out, with 6:40 to go in the first half.
The Pirates answered with their only score of the day.
Nathaniel hit Nathan Owens for a 79-yard score through the air on broken coverage.
It was one of only a few Dragon miscues on the day.
"Just broken down, busted coverage," head coach Drew Dallas said of the play after the game.
The Dragons surrendered 170 total yards on the day, 79 on the one touchdown.
Hutchinson quickly answered before halftime when Samari Collier hit Tre Brown from nine yards out to put the Dragons up 24-7 at the break.
The Dragon defense pushed Indy's rushing attack backward for negative-11 total yards on the ground.
If you subtract the one, big play of the day, Hutchinson held Independence to 1.89 yards per play.
Meanwhile, Hutchinson racked up 426 yards of total offense and got 148 punt-return yards from Kordell Gouldsby. With 4:58 left in the third, Gouldsby got his first punt return for a touchdown on the season.
"Our guys up front did a good job creating space and letting him work," Dallas said of Gouldsby's 18.5 yards per return.
The punt return for a score and Julius Bolden's three-yard run for a TD in the third quarter put Hutchinson up 38-7 headed into the final frame.
Christian Johnson got some work offensively and led the Dragons on a 10-play, 75-yard drive to score the first points of the fourth.
Johnson capped the drive with a three-yard burst.
Burger got the final points of the day on a 23-yard field goal.
