🏐 Dragons earn home sweep of Busters

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Holding its first opponent to a sub-.100 attack percentage since September 25, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team held Garden City to .021 hitting and earned a much-needed victory with a sweep of the Broncbusters on Monday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons snapped a seven-match losing streak with a 29-27, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Garden City, which evened the season series with the Busters at 1-1.

The Dragons (13-17, 4-5 KJCCC) are off on Wednesday and travel to Cloud County for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday in Concordia. Garden City fell to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the KJCCC.

Hutchinson was led by freshman Atlyn Proctor who had 13 kills, hitting .189 on 37 attacks.

Right-side hitter Tiana Simmons had nine kills and hit .200 on 20 swings. Simmons just missed a double-double with a season-high 12 digs and two blocks.

Sophomore middle McKenzie Murphy hit .278 with seen kills on 18 attacks. Murphy had five total blocks, including one solo block.

Freshman Kierny Follmer came off the bench to add seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore Precious Johnson had five kills and two blocks.

The Blue Dragons hit .139 as a team, out-blocked Garden City 7-6 and out-dug the Busters 76-63. The Dragons had six service aces.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 36 assists and five digs.

Freshman libero Addy Foster finished with 20 digs. Freshman Ellie Suber had a season-high 15 digs with two aces. Bea Carvalho had a season-high 13 digs with three service aces.

Julia Brazil had 10 kills to lead Garden City.

SET 1: The first set was a back-and-forth battle with 14 ties and seven lead changes and went to extra points. The Dragons had to overcome an early deficits of 6-2 and 10-5. The Dragons finally tied the set at 12-12 after a Wilson ace serve and took its first lead on a Follmer/Murphy double block for a 17-16 lead. Trailing 23-22, the Dragons got a Buster attack error and Murphy kill to take a 24-23 lead. The Dragons couldn’t convert on their first two set points and then trailed 26-25. The Dragons took a 27-26 lead on a Buster attack error and Carvalho service ace. The set was tied at 27. Proctor had a kill, her third of the set for a 28-27 lead. The Dragons closed out the set on a Garden attack error for a 29-27 victory.

SET 2: A Simmons kill gave the Blue Dragons a 10-6 lead, but Garden City reeled off five consecutive points for an 11-10 lead. The Dragons answered with a 5-0 run of their own and took a 15-11 lead after a Carvalho ace. A Suber ace gave the Dragons a 19-15 lead. Then a solo Murphy block upped the Dragon lead to 23-18. Garden scored four unanswered points to pull with 23-22. After a Dragon timeout, they closed out the set with a Proctor kill and Buster attack error. The Dragon defense held Garden City to .000 hitting in the second set.

SET 3: The Dragons took an early 7-3 lead after double block from Simmons and Murphy and ultimately jumped out to a 13-5 lead. The Busters went on an 8-2 run to pull within 15-13, but the Dragons seized control of the set with a 5-0 run that included kills from Proctor and Simmons, a Johnson solo block and Suber ace serve for a 20-13 lead. Garden City scored five in a row to close within 20-18. Simmons’ kill snapped that run and sparked a final 5-1 run to close the match and ended on a Wilson setter dump on match point.
