Repeat championships in the NFL used to be more common.

Over the first 39 Super Bowls, it happened eight times. But no team has done it since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots won two in a row following the 2003-04 seasons.

Patrick Mahomes and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-kansas-city-chiefs-san-francisco-49ers-4d82758f64c2636922b2ae3369a474a4">Kansas City Chiefs</a>&nbsp;are aiming to become the first back-to-back Super Bowl champs in 19 years when they face the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs had a chance to do it three years ago, but lost 31-9 to Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Two other teams — the 2017 Patriots and the 2014 Seattle Seahawks — also have failed in their repeat bid since the feat was last accomplished.

There hasn't been a back-to-back champion in major league baseball since the New York Yankees won three straight World Series from 1998-2000. The Golden State Warriors last did it in the NBA in 2017-18. It was accomplished more recently in the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning capturing the Stanley Cup in 2020-21.

Here are the NFL’s repeat champions in the Super Bowl era:

Vince Lombardi’s team won the first two Super Bowls and a few years later the iconic coach’s name was put on the trophy awarded to the winner. The Packers dominated the Chiefs in the first Super Bowl on Jan. 15, 1967, winning 35-10. They followed up with a 33-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders in 1968.

Quarterback Bart Starr was the MVP in both wins. He tossed two touchdown passes against Kansas City and threw for 202 yards and one TD vs. Oakland.

After losing to Dallas in Super Bowl 6, the Dolphins went 14-0 in 1972 and capped off the NFL’s only undefeated season with a 14-7 win over Washington on Jan. 14, 1973.

The Dolphins defeated the Vikings 24-7 the following year for the franchise’s most recent Super Bowl victory. It was the second of four Super Bowl losses for Minnesota in a seven-year span.

Safety Jake Scott had two interceptions and was the MVP in the win over Washington. Larry Csonka ran for 145 yards and two scores to earn MVP honors against Minnesota.

Chuck Noll, Terry Bradshaw and the Steel Curtain won their first of four Super Bowls in six years, defeating Minnesota 16-6 on Jan. 12, 1975, in Super Bowl 9. Franco Harris was the MVP of that game after rushing for 158 yards and one TD.

The Steelers beat the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 the following season. Lynn Swann earned MVP honors with four catches for 161 yards and one TD.

Pittsburgh’s bid for a three-peat fell two games short when the Steelers lost the AFC championship game to eventual champion Oakland in December 1976.

The Steelers returned to the Super Bowl following the 1978 season and again defeated Tom Landry, Roger Staubach and the Cowboys 35-31. Bradshaw threw for 318 yards and four TDs to win the MVP award.

Pittsburgh defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 on Jan. 20, 1980, to repeat. Bradshaw again was the MVP after throwing for 309 yards and two TDs.

Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and the 49ers capped off the 1980s with their third and fourth titles in the decade. The Niners defeated Cincinnati 20-16 on Jan. 22, 1989, beating the Bengals in a Super Bowl for the second time. Rice was the MVP after catching 11 passes for 215 yards and one TD.

The 49ers routed Denver 55-10 to win it again the next season. Montana had 297 yards passing and five TDs to earn his third Super Bowl MVP award.

Jimmy Johnson teamed up with Jerry Jones to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to “America’s Team” after a 15-year drought. With Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin leading the way, the Cowboys dominated Buffalo 52-17 on Jan. 31, 1993. Aikman won MVP honors with 273 yards passing and four TDs.

The rematch was closer but the Cowboys prevailed 30-13, handing coach Marv Levy, QB Jim Kelly and the rest of the Bills their fourth straight Super Bowl defeat. Smith had 132 yards rushing and two scores to earn the MVP award.

After losing three Super Bowls in a four-year span to finish the 1980s, John Elway waited eight years to go back and prevented Brett Favre and the Packers from repeating. The Broncos beat Green Bay 31-24 on Jan. 25, 1998. Terrell Davis had 157 yards rushing and three TDs to earn the MVP award.

The Broncos defeated Atlanta 34-19 to repeat. Elway threw for 336 yards and one TD to get MVP honors.

Brady and Bill Belichick won six Super Bowls together in 20 seasons with their second and third titles coming back to back.

Adam Vinatieri kicked a 41-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining to give the Patriots a 32-29 win over Carolina on Feb. 1, 2004. Brady threw for 354 yards and three TDs to win the second of his five MVP awards and seven rings.

New England held off coach Andy Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles the following season, 24-21. Deion Branch had 11 catches for 133 yards to earn the MVP award. Terrell Owens had nine catches for 122 yards for the Eagles after defying his doctor’s advice and returning to play just six weeks after ankle surgery.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It seems altogether fitting that Chris Jones will chase a third Super Bowl ring in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks.

The Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle made some bold bets on himself this season.

Jones went bust on the first one, holding out through the offseason, training camp and into the regular season in the hopes of landing a lucrative contract extension. Jones missed a Week 1 loss to Detroit before he finally agreed to a reworked one-year deal that in some ways was worse than the contract he was supposed to have played under this season.

But the new deal included a number of provisions — gambles, if you will — that Jones has been able to cash in.

Along with a $19.5 million base value, Jones' contract called for an extra $1 million for playing 35% of snaps, another $1 million for hitting 50%, and yet another $1.25 million when he hit 10 sacks. He celebrated the last of those in an otherwise meaningless regular-season finale against the Chargers with a wild sideline celebration with his teammates.

“I was happy for him,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said with a smile. “We all were.”

Then came the longest of longshot parlays, one that seemed outlandish at first and downright ridiculous midway through the season, when the Chiefs had lost five of eight games and looked nothing like a championship team: Jones would earn another $1 million if he was voted an All-Pro and managed to help the Chiefs reach their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons.

With their win over the Ravens last weekend, which sent the Chiefs to Las Vegas to face the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium, the gregarious Jones added yet another bonus to his rapidly swelling bank account.

“You've got to take a second and look back at everything you had to go through,” said Jones, who had an important defensive deflection in the game in Baltimore. “I never think it's about the destination but the journey to get to the destination. When you look at the journey we had to take, it's a huge appreciation for that.”

Jones has been a game-wrecker since the moment the Chiefs chose him in the second round of the 2016 draft, a year before Patrick Mahomes arrived and truly altered the trajectory of the franchise. Jones started 11 games as a rookie, had 6 1/2 sacks the next year, then broke through with 15 1/2 during the 2018 season while earning second-team All-Pro recognition.

The following year, Jones helped the Chiefs beat the 49ers — coincidentally — for their first Super Bowl title in 50 years. And he had another 15 1/2 sacks last year, when the Chiefs beat the Eagles for another Lombardi Trophy.

Jones hoped that big year would earn him a long-term contract approaching that of Aaron Donald, the three-time AP Defensive Player of the Year for the Rams.

The Chiefs and his representatives were in regular contact, but a deal never appeared close to materializing. That became increasingly clear as Jones sat out the entire preseason, and when the Chiefs began to prepare for their season-opener against Detroit, which Jones ultimately watched from a suite in Arrowhead Stadium.

Jones eventually signed an incentive-laden one-year deal after racking up millions in fines and losing $1 million in a missed game check. But the new contract gave him a chance to earn some of that money back, and Jones got right back to work. He had 1 1/2 sacks in Week 2 against Jacksonville and hasn't slowed down, helping Kansas City rank No. 2 in total defense this season.

Jones is due to hit free agency after the Super Bowl, though, and while the Chiefs could conceivably lure him back, it doesn't bode well that they have repeatedly failed to reach a long-term deal. Putting the franchise tag on Jones is an option, too, but that would come at a contract figure that would deal a crippling blow to their salary cap.

So, the most likely scenario is that Jones is preparing to play his final game for the Chiefs.

TULSA, Okla. –&nbsp;&nbsp;Wichita State led by 11 at halftime and dominated in the paint, but it wasn't enough to record a road win at Tulsa, falling 79-68 Wednesday night in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Wichita State (9-12, 1-7) played the first 20 minutes with momentum they created in the SMU win, but the final 20 minutes was a completely different story. Tulsa outscored the Shockers, 47-25, after halftime and closed the game on a 15-2 run over the final 3:54.

Five Shockers finished in double figures, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/colby-rogers/7582">Colby Rogers</a>&nbsp;with 13.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/harlond-beverly/7587">Harlond Beverly</a>&nbsp;added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists but was just 6-for-17 from the floor.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/dalen-ridgnal/8757">Dalen Ridgnal</a>&nbsp;scored 11 of his points in the first half.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/7579">Xavier Bell</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7584">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;both finished with 10 points apiece off the bench.

Wichita State was 5-for-12 from long range in the first half but went 1-for-9 in the second. Overall, Wichita State shot 46.2 percent. Tulsa was 11-for-27 (40.7 percent) from beyond the arc and attempted 21 more free throws, going 20-for-24 to Wichita State's 2-for-3.

The Hurricane got 44 combined points from PJ Haggerty (23) and Cobe Williams (21). Haggerty came in ranked in the top 10 nationally in free throws made and attempted, and finished the night 14-for-14.Tulsa started the game on an 8-2 run after hitting its first two shots, but the Shockers responded with a barrage of three-pointers. Ridgnal hit two after Rogers hit the first to kickstart a 13-2 run.

Ridgnal splashed in his third triple after the first media timeout to put Wichita State on top, 18-10. Ridgnal outscored Tulsa by himself, 11-10, in the first 6:00 minutes of the game.

Back-to-back scores from Beverly gave Wichita State a 10-point lead with 11:50 left in the half, forcing a Tulsa timeout.

Tulsa cut it to six at the 8:58 mark, but six straight for the visitors pushed the margin right back to 12. Wichita State would grab its largest lead of the half with 1:15 left, 43-28, following a Rogers trey and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/quincy-ballard/7586">Quincy Ballard</a>&nbsp;dunk.

The Hurricane would score the final four points of the half, sending the Shockers into the locker room with a 43-32 lead. Ridgnal led all scorers with 11, all coming in the first 6:00 minutes of the game.Wichita State was 19-for-33 (57.6 percent) from the floor in the first 20 minutes and outrebounded Tulsa by 10.

The start of the second half was less than ideal for Wichita State. The Shockers missed their first five field goal attempts and had three turnovers, leading to a Tulsa 7-0 run. Just 3:38 into the half,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/paul-mills/1128">Paul Mills</a>&nbsp;had to burn a timeout with the home crowd on its feet.

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers have made another significant addition to their front office as they build toward the future.

The team has hired former Chiefs executive Brandt Tilis as their new Executive Vice President of Football Operations.

The football executive management team will be led by new Panthers President of Football Operations/General Manager Dan Morgan.

Tilis will be responsible for all football administration and non-coaching matters related to operations, equipment, video, and analytics, among other areas. He will also lead player contract negotiations, compliance with the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement and league rules, salary cap management, and maintenance and labor administration.

Tilis, who was Kansas City's lead contract negotiator, adds an analytical approach to the cap.

Tilis has spent the last 14 seasons with the Chiefs and the last three as vice president of football operations.

He has been their lead contract negotiator since 2017 and worked to create a structure that allowed them to give quarterback Patrick Mahomes a record-breaking 10-year, $450 million contract extension in 2020.

The lawsuit filed in the Eastern District of Tennessee claims the NCAA is enforcing rules that unfairly restrict how athletes can commercially use their name, image and likeness. The NCAA already is facing other antitrust suits challenging transfer rules, employment status for athletes and athlete compensation rules.

COLBY – The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team sank 11 3-pointers to remain perfect in true road games this season with a decisive Jayhawk Conference victory over the Colby Trojans on Wednesday night.

<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/whiteney_dallas_ktg5">Dallas Whitney</a>&nbsp;hit a career-high five 3-pointers to lead the Blue Dragons to a 77-56 victory over the Trojans at the Colby Event Center.

The Blue Dragons improved to 17-3 overall and remained one game behind league leaders Barton and Cowley at 12-2. Hutchinson plays host to Independence at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena. Colby fell to 7-14 and 3-12 in league play. The Dragons defeated Colby for the seventh-straight game.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-0 in true road games this season.

Whitney led a 39-18 scoring advantage off the bench with 19 points, his second-highest single-game performance of the season. Whitney hit 5 of 9 3-pointers to place the Blue Dragons. Whitney also tied a career high with seven rebounds.

The Dragons out-rebounded Colby 36-30 and tallied 19 assists, 12 steals and five blocked shots.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons held Colby to the fourth fewest points in series history. The Trojans shot 41.8 percent (23 of 55) overall, 2 of 10 from 3-point range and 8 of 11 from the foul line. The Trojans committed 24 turnovers.

Marko Malekinusic had 16 points to lead Colby. Maxence Massadila, who had 28 points against Hutchinson November, was held to 11 points.

COLBY – Led by a balanced offensive attack and stellar defensive effort, the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team reached the 20-victory milestone on Wednesday night.

The Blue Dragons had a slow offensive start, but steadily pulled away to defeat the Colby Trojans 69-35 at the Colby Event Center in the second meeting of the season.

Hutchinson improved to 20-0 overall and 14-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons reach the 20-win plateau for the 32nd time in the program's 50-year history and the 15th time in the John Ontjes era. The Blue Dragons also extended their winning streak over Colby to 19 consecutive games. Colby fell to 6-14 overall and 2-13 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons play host to Independence at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons missed 10 of their first 16 shots, but finished hitting 20 of their final 38 shot attempts to pull away, building leads as large as 36 points.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — K-State senior center and All-American candidate Ayoka Lee added another national award watch list to her season, as she has been named to the 2023-24 Wade Watch List by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Lee was among four players added to the list at midseason. This is the third time in her career that she has been a candidate for the Wade Trophy.

The Wade Trophy is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.

The committee will narrow the watch list for the honor to four finalists in mid-March. The winner of the 2024 Wade Trophy will be announced April 4 in Cleveland — site of the 2024 WBCA Convention and NCAA Women's Final Four.

The two-time USBWA/Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week recipient this season, has had a strong 2023-24 as she is averaging 19.8 points on a career-best .677 field goal percentage, 8.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots. She ranks second in the nation and leads the Big 12 in field goal percentage. Lee is fourth in the Big 12 in scoring average and leads the league and is eighth in the nation for blocks per game.

Lee, a Lisa Leslie Award Top 10 finalist, has recorded nine games this season with 20 or more points including her second career 20-20 double-double with 24 points, 21 rebounds and five blocked shots against Oral Roberts.

In her career, Lee ranks fourth in school history for points scored with 2,017, second for rebounds with 1,034, the school record holder for career blocks with 284 and owns the school record for career double-doubles with 55.

K-State begins a two-game road trip on Wednesday, as the Wildcats visit Oklahoma at 6 p.m.

RVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 has revealed its football schedule for the 2024 season. The league's first year without marquee programs Texas and Oklahoma will incorporate new members Arizona, Arizona State and Utah and mark the return of Colorado to the now 16-team league. Each team will play nine conference games without divisions. Some games will renew old rivalries and other prescheduled matchups will be played as nonconference games. Among the notable matchups, BYU will travel to Utah on Nov. 9 for the 101st meeting of the intense rivals. It will be the first time since 2010 that the schools will face off as conference foes.

The San Francisco 49ers finally climbed back up the playoff mountain to return to the Super Bowl only to find a familiar foe waiting for them. When the Niners get a second shot at a Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs it will be a rare title game rematch in this short of a span. There have only been eight Super Bowl rematches in the previous 57 games, with just three happening in a five-year span before this rematch. The winners of those three rematches were the teams that won the first meeting.

UNDATED-A person with knowledge of the deal says Carlyle Group Inc. co-founder David Rubenstein has reached an agreement to buy the Baltimore Orioles for $1.725 billion. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the agreement had not been announced. Rubenstein is a Baltimore native. He will take over as the team’s controlling owner, and he’s assembled an investment team that includes Ares co-founder Michael Arougheti. The Angelos family has been in control of the Orioles since 1993, when Peter Angelos purchased the team for $173 million. Angelos’ son John is the team’s current chairman. The team recently reached a deal on a new lease extension at Camden Yards.

UNDATED-NHL players Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils and Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames have been charged with sexual assault in connection with an investigation into an alleged sexual assault by several members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team. Lawyers representing Hart, McLeod, Foote and Dube say each player has been charged by police in London, Ontario. The developments come two days after former NHL player Alex Formenton turned himself in to police to face charges.

UNDATED-Few college programs have had as much success or produced as many star players in the NFL as Alabama. Amazingly, no player who ended his college career playing for the Crimson Tide has scored a point in a Super Bowl. Players from 143 colleges have scored a point in a Super Bowl with Miami players leading the way with 84. UNDATED-The University of Tennessee chancellor ripped the NCAA president in a scathing letter released Tuesday that said the “failing” organization is pursuing “factually untrue and procedurally flawed” allegations the school violated rules for name, image and likeness compensation compensation to athletes. The letter was written Monday after a meeting between Tennessee officials and NCAA representatives to discuss the allegations. Chancellor Donde Plowman called it “intellectually dishonest” for NCAA staff to pursue infractions cases as if students have no NIL rights. The NIL collective supporting Tennessee athletes was among the first to emerge after the NCAA lifted its ban on athletes making money off their fame.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Rory McIlroy continues his softening against LIV Golf. He says there is no need to punish players who went to LIV Golf and want to return to the PGA Tour. McIlroy says they should be able to play if they are eligible. He also says winning at a signature event like the AT&amp;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am would be cheapened by not having all the best players. UNDATED-World Series MVP Corey Seager had surgery Tuesday for a left sports hernia repair, and the Texas Rangers' All-Star shortstop will miss most of spring training. General manager Chris Young says Seager had the operation Tuesday in Arizona, where the team holds spring training, and will remain there for rehab. The Rangers hope to have him ready by opening day. The hernia issue came up during the postseason, and after some extended rest was still bothering Seager during offseason workouts. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson and K.J. Adams Jr. each scored 16 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and No. 8 Kansas defeated Oklahoma State 83-54 on Tuesday night.

All five Kansas starters scored in double figures.

“It was good not to have to stress as much,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We played well. Offensively, we were able to move the ball. We got the shots we wanted and we shared it. Our shot distribution was good. Marko (Elmarko Jackson) saw a couple go down, so there were a lot of good things offensively.”

The Jayhawks, who played without all-America candidate Kevin McCullar Jr., cruised throughout the second half. Their lead never dipped below the halftime margin of 18 points.

“Obviously it was a tough night for us, but Kansas had a lot to do with it,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton said. “We obviously didn’t play well enough to give ourselves much of a chance.

Today, we tried to make them beat us from 3-point range, but they showed us they were capable of beating us from 3 early. That makes it harder to put more attention on Hunter.”Kansas (17-4, 5-3 Big 12) got 12 points from Dajuan Harris Jr., 11 from Johnny Furphy and 10 from Jackson. Dickinson had a double-double with 11 rebounds, and Harris had seven assists. Dickinson went over 2,000 points in his career, counting his first three years at Michigan.Self was pleased with the aggressiveness of Harris, who had his second-most points of the season.“We wanted Juan to shoot the ball,” he said. “I think he was more aggressive. I told Juan he needs to quit listening to me and he needs to quit listening to everybody else what they think he should be doing to play well. It’s ridiculous, including me."All he’s done is won a state high school championship, won a national championship. He wins every pickup game. I tell him, ‘Just play and trust your instincts. Quit trying to do what other people say you need to do.’ He needs to make sure his team wins. And that’s what he does.”Oklahoma State (9-12, 1-7) was led by John-Michael Wright with 16 points. Brandon Garrison added 11 points after scoring the first seven points of the game for the Cowboys.Kansas gradually pulled away in the first half, grabbing its first double-digit lead with 11:12 left in the first half on a jumper by Jackson. When Dickinson hit a foul-line jumper to cap a 12-0 run, the Jayhawks led 33-15.
