HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you think you have heard a new voice on the KWBW Morning Show since February or on both Hutch High and HutchCC football games, you would be correct.

Newton native Sean Boston is the newest addition to the Eagle Media Hutchinson team of sportscasters and will make his debut tonight calling the action of the HutchCC Blue Dragons as they open the 2023-24 basketball season versus Eastern Oklahoma State College.

Boston joined the Eagle Media Hutch sportscast team this past February, accepting the Assistant Sports Director/Account Executive position.

"It's time to wind down a little," Glen Grunwald, radio voice of the Blue Dragons, said. "I started calling games for Hutch at the beginning of the 1998-1999 season, assisting Rusty Hilst with football and doing the play-by-play for basketball that fall." Grunwald has called more than 3,000 sporting events since he began sports broadcasting as a hobby in 1985 at KANS in Larned. 

"My college roommate, Dennis Franz, owned KANS and asked me to step in and do color for their play-by-play guy for football," Grunwald said.

"Little did I know that, by basketball season, that gentleman would be moving away and I was tossed the ball to start doing play-by-play for the rest of the sports season," Grunwald chuckled.

Ironically, Larned's basketball coach was Kevin Abbott, who lives just around the corner from Grunwald in Hutchinson.

In 1990, the Barton County Cougars came calling and Grunwald started calling their basketball and national volleyball tournament runs until Dan Deming gave him a call and talked him into making the switchover to Hutchinson in the summer of 1998.

So 38 seasons later, 26 as the voice of the Blue Dragons, the time has come to transition to the future.

"Hutchinson has always had great sportscasters. Go way back to Tom Hedrick, who got his start with KWBW in the late '50s. Gary Bender, John Rooney, Hod Humiston, Bob Watson, Jerry Kershaw, and, most recently, Rusty Hilst," Grunwald added. "I'm so proud to be part of that great group of local sportscasters."

"Sean will do a great job. We've been talking about this being a possibility for about three-years-plus. He is a great young man that has called the Hutchinson broadcast job a 'dream job.' I'm looking forward to watch him grow and prosper and couldn't be more proud of how he has embraced the position," Grunwald said.

Boston has a vast history behind the mic for being so young. The Halstead High School and Butler Community College graduate called a state championship football season for Bishop Carroll just a few years ago. He served as an intern with the KJCCC office, helping with a number of events. He has also called arena football in both Wichita and Dodge City, and was part of the Dodge City broadcast team for both Dodge City High and Dodge City Community College for 3 1/2 years. In addition to all that, he had a short stint with Eagle Media Hays in 2022.

"Sean recently got married (to Liz Reifschneider) and became a new dad when he adopted Liz's two young boys, so he is happy to make the Hutchinson area home," Grunwald added.

"It's truly an honor to be a part of the Blue Dragon broadcast crew," Boston said. "I've always had tremendous respect for HutchCC athletics and am looking forward to this opportunity. The passion that the city of Hutchinson and the surrounding areas have for Blue Dragon athletics is truly one-of-a-kind."

Both Boston and Grunwald will continue to provide broadcast coverage for the NJCAA volleyball and basketball championships when they take place in the Sports Arena.

Grunwald will continue to call Hutch High athletics for at least another year with his good friend, Dan Naccarato. Naccarato will assist Boston and Grunwald with the home Blue Dragon games, while Daren Dunn will continue to assist on the road.

"I think the transition will be great. I thank HutchCC Athletic Director Josh Gooch for allowing me to make this transition and continue this year behind the mic. Special thanks to all the fans that have made the past 26 years so very, very special," Grunwald said.

Glen Grunwald isn't going away, he will still continue to call HutchCC men's basketball who also open the season versus North Idaho at the Sports Arena Friday night. Grunwald will only call the home games for the men, while Boston will call the road women's and men's contests.

Twenty win seasons are normally the magic marker for a successful season for college basketball teams.

Finishing 20-12 last season, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team felt like it underachieved and look to an almost entirely new cast of players to make its run for third-year head coach Tommy DeSalme.

"I'm really excited for this season," said DeSalme, who is 45-21 in his first two seasons on the Blue Dragon bench. "I think we have a team that has lots of room for growth and is versatile."

The all-time NJCAA leader in program victories with 1,894 opens its 92nd season on Friday with North Idaho in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at 7:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

The 2022-23 Blue Dragons were the second-highest scoring team in the NJCAA last season at 97.2 points per game. Leading scorer Aaron Franklin, the Jayhawk Conference's leading scorer from last season, moved onto Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Returning players for DeSalme this season are guards&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/bundy_kernan_hvu2">Kernan Bundy</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/wagler_landon_xlpj">Landon Wagler</a>&nbsp;and forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/weathers_dadrevius_3k80">Dadrevius Weathers</a>.

Bundy (6-foot-3, 190, Overland Park) started in 29 of 32 games last season and is the leading returning scorer. Bundy averaged 9.1 points per game while shooting 37.2 percent overall and 29.1 percent from 3-point range. He had a career-high 28 with five 3-pointers against Northwest Tech last season.

Wagler (6-5, 200, Lenexa) battled through injuries in his freshman season and played in 24 games. The fourth-generation Blue Dragon averaged 1.3 points in 4.0 minutes per game.

Weathers (6-7, 180, Phenix City, Alabama) threw down some show-stopping dunks in his freshman season. He averaged 5.8 points per game in just under 10 minutes played per game.

"We have three strong returners," DeSalme said. "All three of those guys have put in hard work and improved and I look for great seasons by them."

The Dragons have xx transfers added to the mix this season.

"There are lots of new faces," DeSalme said.

"I'm looking forward to watching our lead guard group (Ricks, Holman, Branch and Smith). They all have the ability to play the pace offensively and defensively that we need to have for success.

"We have lots of hybrid players who can play guard and forward positions (Thomas, Whitney, Adeoye, Simon and Daniel). Thomas and Simon are transfers who give us some experience. Daniel and Simon and Thomas can all play well with back to basket as well."

The Blue Dragons were picked to finish sixth in the Jayhawk Conference preseason coaches' poll.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons look for rebound season in 2023-24

Ever since John Ontjes took over the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball program before the 2007-08 season, one thing has always been a constant entering each and every season.

The 2023-24 Blue Dragon women face those same lofty hopes as the season opens Friday with the Eastern Oklahoma State Mountaineers in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at 5:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson plays NEO at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons are picked to finish second behind Butler in the preseason Jayhawk Conference Coaches' Poll, but are unranked in the NJCAA national preseason rankings.

One of the reasons for the lack of national attention was the way Hutchinson ended the 2022-23 season. The Blue Dragons were stung 73-68 by Coffeyville in the quarterfinal round of the Region VI Tournament, ending last season with a 23-8 record. The Dragons were 17-7 in the KJCCC last season and finished fourth.

Ontjes, who has built a 446-96 record in his first 16 seasons at Hutchinson, returns four players from last season, including two starters.

First-team All-KJCCC forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;(6'0, Lafayette, LA) is the leading returning scorer for Hutchinson. Last season, Duffy averaged 13.1 points per game and shot 48.1 percent from the field. She ranked third in the KJCCC in rebounding at 8.7 boards per contest.

Duffy had nine double-doubles last season with season highs of 25 points against Northwest Tech and 21 rebounds against Independence. Duffy had two of the top five all-time single-game rebound marks last season.

The Blue Dragons look to improve an offense that struggled at times in 2022-23. Last season, the Dragons averaged 71.3 points while shooting 39.9 percent overall and 28.9 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, the Dragons allowed 59.2 points per game with opponents shooting 28.9 percent.

PHOENIX (AP) — Victor Wembanyama strolled through the hallways at Footprint Center after the best game of his short NBA career when he passed 13-time All-Star Kevin Durant, stopping for a quick handshake and quick hug. Some say the 7-foot-4 Frenchman is like a taller version of Durant. Durant's first impression is that the San Antonio Spurs budding star might be even better. In just his fifth NBA game, the 19-year-old Wembanyama showed why he was one of the most hyped prospects in years, scoring 38 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a standout performance during a 132-121 victory over Durant and the Phoenix Suns.

After 63 seasons before 1st title, Rangers set up for another run with Seager, Semien and Bochy

Corey Seager and Marcus Semien are really just getting started in Texas and already have a World Series title together with a franchise that had never won one. The Rangers this offseason will look to re-sign left-hander Jordan Montgomery, the trade-deadline acquisition from the St. Louis Cardinals who is eligible for free agency. Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, the other deadline acquisition from the Mets, opted in for the 2024 season as part of that trade. ALCS MVP Adolis García is eligible for salary arbitration, but the slugger is still under team control next season.

James Harden determined to fit in on Clippers' loaded roster after messy Philadelphia exit

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even more than his stints in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, James Harden believes he has much more to prove in joining the Los Angeles Clippers. Not only is Harden back home in Southern California, but he joins a loaded roster that already features Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook. There is mounting pressure on Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti to discipline Michigan and coach Jim Harbaugh for a sign-stealing scheme. Petitti heard from frustrated and angry Big Ten coaches during a video call Wednesday, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. The NCAA is investigating Michigan for impermissible in-person scouting. A Michigan staffer is alleged to have sent people to future opponents' games for the purpose of video recording signals. The NCAA's enforcement process is slow moving, but Big Ten bylaws provide the commissioner leeway to act on competitive integrity issues.

Josh McDaniels couldn't make it past the midpoint of the season before the Las Vegas Raiders decided to make a change. Other teams will be joining the search for a new coach sooner or later. The NBA's In-Season Tournament starts Friday and runs through Dec. 9. Games will have a new look with brightly painted courts, and Commissioner Adam Silver finally has the second trophy that teams can play for. Group play games will be held every Tuesday and Friday in November except for Election Day when the NBA will take the night off. The semifinals are in Las Vegas on Dec. 7 and the title game is there two nights later.

LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) — Cameron Percy matched his best score on the PGA Tour with a 62. That gives him a two-shot lead in the World Wide Technology Championship. And it left him wondering just how low he could have gone. The Australian was 9 under through 13 holes. He made only one birdie the rest of the way. It was still enough to lead by two over a group that includes Camilo Villegas and Michael Kim. The other star was Tiger Woods, who wasn't playing. Woods designed El Cardonal at Diamante. It's the first time his course has hosted a PGA Tour event.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The oddsmakers named Kyle Larson the favorite to win the NASCAR championship, but half the field believe the person with the best chance to celebrate Sunday will be a spectator at Phoenix Raceway. Erin Blaney is in the unique position in that both her boyfriend and her older brother are racing against each other for the Cup title. It's become a bit of a joke between contenders Ryan Blaney and William Byron, who referred to Blaney as his "brother-in-law" last week to trigger questions on what the mood might be like at Thanksgiving dinner if one of the two becomes champion. The most recent Wildcats to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl were quarterback Skylar Thompson and safety Russ Yeast after the 2021 season. Thompson currently plays for the Miami Dolphins, while Yeast has started every game this year for the Los Angeles Rams.

Beebe, a native of Kansas City, Kansas, was recently named a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award and has started 43 games along the K-State offensive line, including each of the last 40 contests. He has helped the 2023 Wildcats rush for 226.0 yards per game to rank fifth in the nation, while their 464.6 yards of total offense ranks 15th.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Duke has started every game this year at defensive end as he leads the Wildcats and ranks fourth in the Big 12 in with 5.0 sacks. A career 29-game starter at both defensive end and outside linebacker, Duke had a highwater mark of 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks earlier this season against Troy.

Leveston has started each of the last 22 games at left tackle dating back to last season as the 2022 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention pick is playing at an all-conference level again in 2023. A native of Waco, Texas, Leveston has started 27 games in his career and has played in 46 contests.

Sinnott, a product of Waterloo, Iowa, has also started every game since the beginning of last season, and he ranks seventh nationally among tight ends in 2023 with 46.5 receiving yards per game while he is second among Big 12 tight ends with three touchdowns. PHOENIX (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi pitched six gutsy innings, Mitch Garver broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the seventh and the Texas Rangers won their first World Series championship by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 in Game 5. Marcus Semien homered late and the Rangers, held hitless for six innings by Zac Gallen, finished a record 11-0 on the road this postseason after capping an all-wild card World Series with three straight wins in the desert. In his first season with Texas, manager Bruce Bochy won his fourth title 13 years to the day after his first, which came in 2010 when the Giants beat the Rangers. He also won with San Francisco in 2012 and 2014. Texas shortstop Corey Seager took home his second World Series MVP award.

PHOENIX (AP) — Corey Seager was voted the World Series Most Valuable Player after leading the Texas Rangers over the Arizona Diamondbacks for their first title. Seager joined Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson as the only two-time World Series MVPs. He also won the award in 2020 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. PHOENIX (AP) — Zac Gallen spent six innings looking like Don Larsen, the possibility of a World Series no-hitter flashing through his mind. It just didn't work out. Gallen surrendered three hits in the seventh, including Mitch Garver's RBI single, and the Arizona Diamondbacks were eliminated with a 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers in Game 5. A 28-year-old right-hander, Gallen retired his first 14 batters before walking Nathaniel Lowe on a low 3-1 fastball. He lasted one more batter after Garver’s single, striking out six in 6 1/3 innings.

The Big 12 Conference has announced its 16-team, four-year scheduling matrix for the 2024-27 football seasons. The scheduling model was developed with a priority on geography, historic matchups and rivalries as well as competitive balance.&nbsp;

“As we look towards the future of this Conference, we are thrilled to introduce the first football scheduling matrix for the new-look Big 12,” said&nbsp;Commissioner Brett Yormark. “I’m grateful to our membership for their support throughout the scheduling process. In this model, competitive balance and student-athlete wellness was prioritized. Rivalries will be protected and new matchups will be introduced – the excitement and parity this Conference is known for will continue for years to come.”

During the four years, all teams will play one another at least once home and away. Some matchups will occur over three seasons while others take place in all four. Matchups in 2024 that were also played in 2023 will not repeat at the same site.

The Conference looked to maintain the current 5/4, 4/5 home/away rotation for all 16 members to minimize non-conference scheduling disruptions. Other important factors were balancing annual travel by distance and time zones as well as maintaining connectivity to rivalries without compromising a balanced rotation for all teams.

The Big 12 will compete as a 16-team conference for the first time in 2024. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah will become members in the summer of 2024 joining Baylor, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;-&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;Kansas State senior left guard&nbsp;Cooper Beebe&nbsp;has been named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2023 Lombardi Award, the Rotary Club of Houston announced Wednesday.

It marks the second-straight season a Wildcat has been a semifinalist for the award that goes annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the character and discipline of NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach Vince Lombardi in addition to outstanding performance and ability. Defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah (2022) and defensive tackle Tim Colton (1995) were each semifinalists for the award.

One of the leaders of a veteran offensive line, Beebe has helped the Wildcats rush for 226.0 yards per game to rank fifth in the nation, while their 464.6 yards of total offense ranks 15th. Due to the work of Beebe and the offensive line, K-State also ranks fourth nationally by converting on 55.0% of its third-down attempts – including 83.8% (31-of-37) when needing 1-3 yards – while its 82.5% touchdown rate in the red zone ranks second nationally.

A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Beebe has started 43 career games, including each of the last 40 contests dating back to the 2020 West Virginia game. Earlier this season, Beebe saw a streak of 1,042 pass blocking plays and 36 full games without a sack allowed come to an end (according to Pro Football Focus).

Being named to the Lombardi Award semifinalist is the latest of many honors for Beebe this season. He has helped the K-State offensive line be named to the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll in addition to being named a Midseason All-American by the Associated Press, CBS Sports, ESPN, Sporting News and The Athletic. Following K-State’s 41-3 victory over TCU in which the Wildcats produced 587 yards of total offense – the sixth most in program history – Beebe was honored as the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week.

Perhaps Beebe’s top accolade this season was being named a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation and an NFF National Scholar-Athlete, one of the most prestigious honors in major college football.

Kansas State, ranked 23rd in the initial College Football Playoff Top 25, heads to Austin, Texas to take on the seventh-ranked Longhorns in an 11 a.m., contest that will be shown on FOX. The Wildcats are back at home next Saturday, November 11, as they take on Baylor. Kick time and TV designation for the game against the Bears will be announced following this weekend’s games.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;For the first time in the 10-year history of the College Football Playoff (CFP), Kansas has earned a spot in the CFP’s Top 25 ranking, it was announced Tuesday. The Jayhawks are ranked No. 21 in the first edition of the 2023 CFP ranking,&nbsp;which was revealed live on ESPN.

Since 2014, the CFP has served as the postseason event to determine college football’s national champion on the field. The selection committee releases five rankings during the regular season, ranking teams based on the members’ evaluation of the teams’ performance on the field. Metrics taken into consideration include strength of schedule, head-to-head results and comparison of results against common opponents. The final CFP selections will be made on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Kansas (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) is the Cheez-It National Team of the Week following a 38-33 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma last Saturday at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The win clinched bowl eligibility for the Jayhawks for the second consecutive season and improved the Jayhawks to 5-0 at home this season. It was also KU’s first victory over a top 10 team since the Jayhawks defeated No. 5 Virginia Tech in the 2008 Orange Bowl.

Following the win, Kansas returned to the AP Top 25 poll at No. 22 and the USA Today Coaches Poll at No. 23, earning a national ranking for the third time this season. 🏈 KU receives first-ever College Football Playoff ranking

Monday's thrilling five-set road victory over Butler vaulted the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team into the No. 2 overall seed for the 2023 Region VI Division I Volleyball Tournament, which begins Wednesday at home sites across the league.

Hutchinson (24-14) play host to Dodge City (15-16) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena in its opening-round match.

The match will be broadcast live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 5:50 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person. Because this is a postseason event, Blue Dragon All-Sports Tickets are not valid. Hutchinson Community College students will be admitted free.

The Blue Dragons and Colby tied for second at 9-5, but the Dragons won a tie-breaker with the Trojans for the second seed.

Hutchinson swept the regular-season series with the Conquistadors, but each match had its difficulties.

The Blue Dragons defeated Dodge City 3-1 on August 30 at the Sports Arena. Golden continues to lead the nation in kills with 541.
