<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/maher_quinn_h0lr">Quinn Maher</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/gunderson_cody_npi8">Cody Gunderson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/bowie_mac_309y">Mac Bowie</a>&nbsp;all homered and the Hutchinson Community College baseball team had two huge innings to roll to their first win at Hobart-Detter Field on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons defeated the Central Christian College JV 21-10 as 10 different Blue Dragons had at least one hit and nine different Hutchinson players had at least one RBI.

Hutchinson improved to 3-0 and will play Southeast Community College in the final two games of a four-game series on Thursday. Site of the games will be determined on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons put together a six-run first inning and a 13-run third inning to grab complete control of the game.

Ten batters came to the plate in the first inning. Maher hit a two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the first to start the inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/pimental-guerrero_luis_ubag">Luis Pimental-Guerrero</a>&nbsp;and David both had RBI singles and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/herrmann_jarrett_gmn0">Jarrett Herrmann</a>&nbsp;had a sacrifice fly to take a 6-1 lead after one inning.

The Blue Dragons sent 18 batters to the plate in the third inning. The 13 runs scored tied for the second-biggest single inning, matching 13-run innings in 2016 against Independence, Neosho County in 2018 and Butler in 2019.

Gunderson hit a line-drive grand slam to left field to give the Dragons a 13-3 lead. Later in the third, Bowie hit a two-run home run down the right field line. The Blue Dragons took advantage of two Tiger errors, two walks and three hit batsmen in the inning.

The Blue Dragons had a season-high 18 hits led by Cymbalista and Davis with three hits each.

Cymbalista was 3 for 4 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs. Davis had a single-game career high three hits. He had two RBIs and scored two runs.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/arends_eli_goqx">Eli Arends</a>&nbsp;entered the game in the third inning and went 2 for 2 with a pair of singles.

Gunderson had a game-high four RBIs with his grand slam. Mayer, and Herrmann had two RBIs each. Mayer now has two home runs and eight RBIs in the first three games of the season.

The Blue Dragons reached 20 runs for the first time since scoring 24 runs against the Sterling College JV on April 24, 2023.

The Blue Dragons were hit by eight pitches, which is the second most in single-game history. Vassart tied a single-game record getting hit by pitches in three different plate appearances.

Five Blue Dragon pitchers struck out a season high 13 batters on Tuesday.

Clark is now on the cusp of becoming Division I women's basketball's all-time leading scorer. An early sign of how her career would evolve happened when she was a high school junior. In a game against Mason City she scored 60 points and made 13 3-pointers on 17 attempts.

Judge keeps NCAA's restrictions on NIL in place for now, denying request by Tennessee and Virginia

A judge has kept in place NCAA rules prohibiting name, image and likeness compensation being used as a recruiting inducement, denying a request for a temporary restraining order by the states of Tennessee and Virginia. The attorneys general of those states filed a federal antitrust lawsuit in the Eastern District of Tennessee last week that challenged the NCAA's NIL rules, after it was revealed the University of Tennessee was under investigation by the association for potential infractions. The states argued that immediate action was needed to keep the NCAA from standing in the way of recruits monetizing their fame.

Labor victory for Dartmouth basketball players only start of path to a union deal

BOSTON (AP) — A ruling that gives the Dartmouth basketball team the right to unionize has far-reaching implications for all of college sports — from the quaint, academically oriented Ivy League to the big-money football factories like Michigan and Alabama. But it's not time to cut down the nets just yet. Although Monday's ruling by a National Labor Relations Board official put the players on the path toward a union, they have a long way to go. It could be years before they are able to sit down with the school and negotiate a collective bargaining agreement. Only then would the two sides sit down and decide what the players are worth. And others around collegiate sports will be watching.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Tylor Perry scored eight of his 26 points in overtime and Kansas State beat No. 4 Kansas 75-70 on Monday night in the 300th matchup of their heated rivalry.

“It was a fun environment to be in,” Perry said. “Our fans did a very good job of packing it in and setting the mood for the game. Kansas is obviously a very good basketball team. Everybody was excited to play. I feel that we went out there, we did what we had to do in order to get the win.”

Perry’s 3-pointer with 1:54 left gave the Wildcats a 70-66 lead. Hunter Dickinson's basket trimmed it to 70-68, but Perry’s two free throws extended the margin back to four.

Dajuan Harris Jr. cut it to 72-70 with two free throws before Kevin McCullar Jr. missed the front end of a 1-and-1 for Kansas with 22 seconds remaining. Arthur Kaluma sank a pair of foul shots and Perry added another one to seal it, ending Kansas State's four-game losing streak.

“I thought that they were the more athletic and explosive team,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I thought we showed stretches where we were as well. But the bottom line is, it comes down to making free throws.”

Kansas State is 6-0 in overtime this season, and 11-0 in coach Jerome Tang's two seasons in Manhattan.

“In overtime, it’s about players making plays,” Tang said. “They don’t feel the pressure. We work on it every day in practice, but I don’t know that that’s necessarily the reason. I think guys just make plays and their confidence level grows.”

Cam Carter had 19 points and 11 rebounds for K-State (15-8, 5-5 Big 12). Kaluma added 13 points and eight boards.

Dickinson had 21 points and 12 rebounds to pace Kansas (18-5, 6-4). Harris and McCullar each added 15 points, and KJ Adams Jr. scored 13.

Kansas scored the first nine points of the second half to open its largest lead at 41-30. But the Wildcats scored the next 11, capped by a three-point play from Carter.

“I thought our guys did a great job,” Tang said of his team's response. “TP (Perry) had an 8-0 run on his own. But the guys locked back in. The fact that we were able to make it a ballgame again and put some score pressure on them helped us.”

Perry hit three free throws with 4:49 left in regulation to give K-State a three-point lead. Dickinson scored inside, but Carter answered from long range to give the Wildcats a 58-54 lead.

Harris hit a layup to tie it with 2:14 left, and McCullar's layup gave Kansas a 62-60 lead with 1:47 to go. Perry tied it again with a layup.

Kaluma’s putback with 23 seconds remaining was answered by Adams' bucket with 14.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

“I thought we had it,” Harris said. “I remember two years ago when we came back in overtime. I’ve been there, Coach has been there before. I just thought we had the game, but they can compete, too, you know.”

Kansas State hit five 3-pointers in the first half but went into the locker room trailing 32-30.

Kansas: It’s the sixth-most played rivalry in men’s college basketball, and the Jayhawks know they’re going to get K-State’s best effort in these games.

(AP) — Reigning national champion Connecticut, Purdue and North Carolina remained atop&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll" target="_blank">The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll</a>&nbsp;for the third consecutive week, while South Carolina cracked the rankings for the first time in nearly seven years.

The Huskies earned 45 of 61 first-place votes to remain at No. 1 for the fourth straight week in Monday’s poll, while the Boilermakers topped the ballots of 16 other voters.

The top of the poll remained set after a big week that included four top-10 matchups over the weekend, with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/purdue-boilermakers-wisconsin-badgers-score-eb76ba7b01b1db7e8908c99badab454d" target="_blank">Purdue winning at Wisconsin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/unc-duke-basketball-score-e664f93dfc40622d5da3417bb562e7af" target="_blank">UNC beating rival Duke</a>. The week also included&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/sports/college-basketball-mens-college-basketball-texas-longhorns-7cb1f5056f42c959857e0ef922ea660b" target="_blank">Kansas beating Houston</a>, which vaulted the Jayhawks up four spots to No. 4 and dropped the Cougars one spot to No. 5.

Tennessee fell one spot to No. 6 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-carolina-tennessee-score-0a9acd25453e1ad670fa8d91802deb4f" target="_blank">losing at home to the now-No. 15 Gamecocks</a>&nbsp;but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kentucky-tennessee-basketball-score-6d95df25010ee90d562c4f65a9968bf7" target="_blank">followed that with a win at Kentucky in the weekend’s other top-10 tussle.</a>&nbsp;The Wildcats tumbled seven spots to No. 17 after losses to the Vols&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kentucky-wildcats-florida-gators-score-28b8a35f0ebd1fa914b07dd5694e5fa6" target="_blank">and Florida</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Marquette, Arizona, Duke and Illinois rounded out the top 10, with the Wildcats and Fighting Illini returning after stints earlier this season.

South Carolina is making its first appearance in the poll since February 2017, a season that saw the Gamecocks made a surprise run to the Final Four. Lamont Paris’ squad has won five straight games,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gamecocks-basketball-staley-paris-cba61486f8e1d118b378e68b3e68135b" target="_blank">and its 19 wins has already surpassed its season haul for any year since that run</a>.

The Gamecocks joined No. 24 San Diego State as the week’s new additions, replacing Oklahoma (No. 23) and TCU (No. 25).

Alabama had the week’s biggest jump, rising eight spots to No. 16 after rising to the top of the Southeastern Conference standings at 8-1. No. 13 Baylor was next up by rising five spots&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-state-baylor-score-01d2b2dd4b16d2e55806b98c94891b48" target="_blank">after a home win against No. 14 Iowa State</a>.

In all, nine teams moved up from last week’s poll.

🏀 MBB: KU vaults to No. 4 in AP Poll

(AP) — Caitlin Clark and Iowa climbed back to No. 2 in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll" target="_blank">The Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll</a>&nbsp;Monday as the star guard moved within striking distance of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/caitlin-clark-scoring-record-stats-16528f3863be82ace94532d7c687093f" target="_blank">the NCAA career scoring record.</a>

It’s the second time in a few weeks that the Hawkeyes have been second in the poll, a spot that hasn’t been kind to teams the past month. UCLA, Iowa and Kansas State all took turns in the second position since Jan. 8 and none of the schools could hold that ranking for more than a week at a time.

While No. 2 has been a revolving door lately, South Carolina has maintained a strong grip atop the poll, once again the unanimous No. 1 team from a 35-member national media panel. 

The Gamecocks (21-0) will host Missouri and No. 11 UConn this week. Dawn Staley’s squad will play those games without star center Kamilla Cardoso,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gamecocks-cardoso-olympic-qualifying-33d71e61626b30c4810a544f5390ea4f" target="_blank">who left for a week to play with the Brazilian national team</a>&nbsp;at an Olympic qualifying tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Iowa has held the No. 2 spot twice before this season, including the week of Jan. 15 when the Hawkeyes lost to Ohio State.

Clark, who is only 66 points away from becoming the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/caitlin-clark-scoring-record-stats-16528f3863be82ace94532d7c687093f" target="_blank">all-time leading scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history</a>, will try and make it a longer stay this time around. She will lead the Hawkeyes against Penn State and Nebraska this week with Kelsey Plum’s record in view.

Stanford fell two spots to sixth after losing to JuJu Watkins and USC. The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/watkins-usc-stanford-basketball-score-23d955b5913d3ee1bf1756d896b68831" target="_blank">phenomenal freshman scored 51 points in that game</a>.

Texas vaulted up five places to seventh after beating Baylor and then-No. 2 Kansas State last week. The Wildcats fell to eighth after also losing to Oklahoma, which entered the poll at No. 24. UCLA was ninth and USC climbed five spots to 10th.

Only once in the past 15 years has a team been No. 2 all season long: Stanford in 2009-10. It’s been a volatile spot lately. In the 2018-19 season, the No. 2 position changed 10 times, the most in that span. There have already been seven No. 2 teams this season.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma is one victory away from joining Tara VanDerveer (1,206) and Mike Krzyzewski (1,202) as the only Division I coaches with 1,200 victories. Auriemma’s first chance to reach that milestone is Wednesday when the Huskies host Seton Hall.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have agreed to the biggest contract in franchise history with shortstop&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr., a 14-year agreement that includes 11 years guaranteed.

Witt Jr., 23, recorded 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases as a rookie in 2022. Last year, he recorded 30 home runs and 49 stolen bases, becoming the first player in Royals history with a 30/30 season. In doing so, he became the seventh player in Major League history to go 30/30 in his age-23 season or younger, and was the second American League shortstop—regardless of age—to post a 30/30 season, following&nbsp;Álex Rodríguez, who went 40/40 in 1998. Witt Jr.’s sophomore season earned him 7th place in the American League Most Valuable Player voting.

Witt Jr.’s combination of home runs (30) and steals (49) last season has been matched only four times in Major League history, by&nbsp;Eric Davis&nbsp;(1987),&nbsp;Barry Bonds&nbsp;(1990),&nbsp;Mike Trout&nbsp;(2012) and&nbsp;Ronald Acuña Jr.&nbsp;(2023).

No player in Major League history has matched Witt Jr.’s combination of HR (50) and steals (79) through his first two seasons.

Witt Jr. last season led the Royals in games played (158), hits (177), triples (11), home runs (30), RBI (96), stolen bases (49), OPS (.813, min. 150 AB) and runs (97). Among American League leaders, he ranked 2nd in stolen bases, 3rd in hits, tied for 3rd in total bases (317), tied for 7th in runs, 8th in extra-base hits (69) and tied for 9th in batting average (.276). He also tied&nbsp;Corbin Carroll&nbsp;for the Major League lead with 11 triples, which were the most by any Royal since&nbsp;Carlos Beltrán&nbsp;had 12 triples in 2001.

Witt Jr. in 2023 became the sixth American League player in the last 75 years with at least 30 home runs and 10 triples in a season, following&nbsp;Joe DiMaggio&nbsp;(1950),&nbsp;Mickey Mantle&nbsp;(1955),&nbsp;Jim Rice&nbsp;(1977 and 1978),&nbsp;Nomar Garciaparra&nbsp;(1997) and&nbsp;Curtis Granderson&nbsp;(2011).

On defense, Witt Jr. in 2023 recorded 14 Outs Above Average, a range-based metric of fielding skill presented by&nbsp;Statcast, which ranked him 1st among American League shortstops and 3rd among all positions in the American League, trailing only Cleveland’s second baseman&nbsp;Andrés Giménez&nbsp;(18) and teammate&nbsp;Maikel Garcia&nbsp;(15).

Andy Reid celebrated his 25th season as a head coach with a masterful performance on the sideline and in the locker room.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one victory away from becoming the first NFL team in 19 years to win back-to-back Super Bowls. They’re here to face the San Francisco 49ers despite a midseason slump that could’ve ruined their repeat hopes.

This isn’t the best team Reid has coached but it just might be his best coaching job.

Sure, he still has Patrick Mahomes. But the two-time NFL and Super Bowl MVP had a subpar season by his lofty standards. He didn’t get much help from his wide receivers at times. They led the league in drops. Mahomes once again counted on star tight end Travis Kelce, who had a slight dip in production to go with a massive increase in global attention due to his relationship with Taylor Swift.

Reid made sure Kelce’s newfound celebrity status didn’t become a distraction.

After starting 6-1, the Chiefs lost five of eight games. At 9-6, they even had a shot to miss the playoffs and ended up with their most losses since 2017.

No chance Reid would let them stumble further. The Chiefs won the next two games to clinch their eighth straight AFC West title and have kept on winning in the playoffs, beating Miami at home in the wild card round, going on the road to beat Buffalo in the divisional round and No. 1-seeded Baltimore in the AFC championship game.

“Coach Reid just challenging every single person in this building to up the ante just one more step and just keep taking it up a notch every week from here on out,” Kelce said. “That’s why we love the big guy. You never fall astray from that kind of mentality no matter how many losses you have, no matter how close the games are and you’re just not finishing them. Coach Reid does a great job of re-channeling that mindset every single week and presenting a challenge against the defense or the offense or just the team we’re going against in the near future. This week, no better time to challenge everybody in that building. He’s got everyone fired up.”

Reid credits Mahomes and Kelce for their leadership, setting the tone for how the team should practice. He also praised general manager Brett Veach for adding players who fit that mentality.

“You’re not going to dog it with Pat Mahomes going full speed, Kelce going full speed,” Reid said. “They’re not going to allow you to do that first of all. Then you watch them, and you watch how they practice, you know it’s not a fit if they can’t do that. Brett is not going to bring in guys that dog, jog, whatever you want to call it.”

The Chiefs lost a Thursday night at Denver to a team that came in 2-5. Two weeks later, they lost a Super Bowl rematch at home to Philadelphia when Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped what should’ve been a go-ahead touchdown pass late in the game.

There was another prime-time loss at Green Bay on Dec. 3 followed by a loss at home to the Bills when Kadarius Toney’s TD off a lateral from Kelce was wiped out by an offside penalty on Toney.

A loss to the Raiders on Christmas was the third straight defeat at home and led Reid to make some adjustments. The offensive coaching staff decided to simplify a complex offense and five wins later the Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years.

“I think it gave our guys a nice little - for (lack of) a better term a wakeup call that, ‘Listen we need to step things up here. Things aren’t just going to fall in our lap,’” Reid said of the loss to Las Vegas. “We’re taking everyone’s best shot, here’s a team that went through some adversity, and they stepped up and were able to present themselves like they did. We were able to learn from it and move on. I felt all along though (that) we had the ability to do that, like I said, we need a little kick in the tail there.”

Reid has already won two Super Bowls and more games than any coach in the history of the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. He’ll end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame win or lose against the 49ers.

If the Chiefs win, it’ll be hard to argue that the 65-year-old Reid is getting even better with age.

They’re here to face the San Francisco 49ers despite a midseason slump that could’ve ruined their repeat hopes.Reid kept them steady.This isn’t the best team Reid has coached but it just might be his best coaching job.Sure, he still has Patrick Mahomes. But the two-time NFL and Super Bowl MVP had a subpar season by his lofty standards. He didn’t get much help from his wide receivers at times. They led the league in drops. Mahomes once again counted on star tight end Travis Kelce, who had a slight dip in production to go with a massive increase in global attention due to his relationship with Taylor Swift.Reid made sure Kelce’s newfound celebrity status didn’t become a distraction.After starting 6-1, the Chiefs lost five of eight games. At 9-6, they even had a shot to miss the playoffs and ended up with their most losses since 2017.No chance Reid would let them stumble further. The Chiefs won the next two games to clinch their eighth straight AFC West title and have kept on winning in the playoffs, beating Miami at home in the wild card round, going on the road to beat Buffalo in the divisional round and No. 1-seeded Baltimore in the AFC championship game.“Coach Reid just challenging every single person in this building to up the ante just one more step and just keep taking it up a notch every week from here on out,” Kelce said. “That’s why we love the big guy. You never fall astray from that kind of mentality no matter how many losses you have, no matter how close the games are and you’re just not finishing them. The Tigers finished on a 25-9 run.<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/colby-rogers/7582">Colby Rogers</a>&nbsp;scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 5-of-8 from three.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/ronnie-degray-iii/7581">Ronnie DeGray III</a>&nbsp;set season highs in points (12) and rebounds (7).&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/harlond-beverly/7587">Harlond Beverly</a>&nbsp;grabbed 10 rebounds to go with seven points, but was just 3-for-14 from the field.David Jones, one of the nation's leading scorers, fueled the second half comeback. He scored 16 of his game-high 26 after halftime. In the first matchup, Jahvon Quinerly dominated with 23 points and 11 assists, and missed only one shot. Wichita State frustrated Quinerly all day in this one. He finished with just three points on 1-of-13 shooting. His lone make was a big one in the final minute, giving Memphis its first lead of the game.Wichita State committed just five turnovers and attempted eight more free throws. Wichita State's misses at the free throw line were costly. They went 1-for-4 to finish the game.Memphis outrebounded Wichita State by 12, its largest margin of the season, including 17 offensive rebounds.Behind three-pointers from Beverly and Rogers, Wichita State opened the game on an 8-0 run and led 11-6 at the first media timeout. After its hot start, Wichita State cooled off, missing seven of its next eight shots over a span of 4:00 minutes, but still held a 15-10 lead due to Memphis' even colder start from the field. The Tigers began the game just 4-for-16.The first meeting in Wichita just a few weeks ago was an up-tempo, high-scoring affair. The first half of the rematch was the opposite. Wichita State never trailed in the first 20 minutes despite shooting just 30 percent from the field.Wichita State went into the half with a 30-24 lead after scoring six of the final eight points. The Shockers had just one turnover and attempted nine more free throws than the Tigers. Memphis had nine first half turnovers and was just 10-for-33 from the floor.Turnovers on the first three possessions to begin the second half saw Memphis pull within one, but the Shockers settled down. Just like that Memphis had erased a 14-point deficit.With all the momentum now gone, Wichita State punched back with back-to-back scores from Rogers and a Beverly breakaway dunk to go back in front, 62-58.Two Jones free throws cut the lead to two and then Quinerly gave the Tigers their first lead of the day with 44 seconds on the clock. Following a timeout, Wichita State got an offensive rebound from DeGray and was fouled.
