COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson (7-0, 3-0) left Montgomery County for the second time in as many weeks with another double-digit victory.

The Dragons sank the Pirates in Independence last week 48-7 and grounded the Red Ravens (4-3, 1-2) Saturday with a 40-17 victory.

Hutchinson intercepted Red Raven quarterbacks thrice and picked up two fumbles.

Both teams coughed up the ball to start the day.

Raven running back Ma'Kenttis Adams lost the ball and Marshon Oxley recovered his first fumble of the season.

Samari Collier found Tre Brown on a 3rd-and-19 pass. As Brown dove for the end zone, the ball popped free inches from pay dirt and the Red Ravens recovered the ball for a touchback.

Coffeyville lost the ball again in the first quarter when quarterback Chris Arviso couldn't handle a bad snap. DeMarcus Johnson Jr. nearly had a scoop-six but was dragged down at the one.

Collier walked in for the first score of the day.

Just 33 seconds later, the Dragons got on the board again when a Red Raven fumble rolled into the end zone and was recovered by Coffeyville's Charles Morgan for a safety.

Running back Waymond Jordan Jr. averaged just .77 yards per carry on nine of his 10 touches in the first half, but broke free on an 83-yard scamper to put the Blue Dragons up 16-0 with 3:10 left in the first quarter.

Coffeyville would answer with 45 seconds left in the opening frame when Arviso hit Jalile Bost on a 45-yard strike.

Bost entered the day with six catches for 93 yards. He added six receptions Saturday for 151 yards and the score.

Nestus Burger added three to Hutchinson's tally early in the second quarter from 33 yards out.

Bost's 63-yard reception before halftime left Coffeyville's Roan McCarthy one second to boot a 36-yard field goal.

The Dragons took a 19-10 lead into the break.

Despite his 83-yard touchdown run, Jordan Jr. finished the first half with 81 yards on the ground.

Jordan Jr. would finish the day with his fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season and his fourth multi-touchdown game.

Jordan Jr. scored halfway through the third and again halfway through the fourth. His 10-yard TD run came after a Ja'Cory Thomas 20-yard TD to open the third quarter.

Thomas ripped a 50/50 ball away from a Red Raven defender to put Hutchinson up 26-10 just four minutes into the second half.

Coffeyville's Brec Long answered back-to-back Hutchinson scores with a four-yard burst from a direct-snap.

Long entered the game as Coffeyville's leading receiver with 17 catches for 264 yards and four touchdowns (the team leader in all three categories.)

The Dragon defense held Long to three receptions for nine yards. Long attempted his first four carries of the year and finished with 15 yards and the lone score.

FINAL: Hutchinson 40 Coffeyville 17

Jordan Jr. racked up 121 yards for a Dragon offense that gained a total of 142 on the ground.

Christian Johnson came in for the injured Samari Collier and threw for 228 yards and one score. He was intercepted once.

Collier re-entered briefly after Johnson was shaken up in the first half. Collier ended the day 2-of-4 passing for 56 yards with an interception.

The Dragon defense did not register a sack after dropping opposing quarterbacks seven times per game over the last three contests.

Hutchinson returns home Oct. 26 for homecoming against No. 11 Butler (3-2, 2-0).

Kickoff is set for noon.
