WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;The Shockers blew past Presbyterian 60-41 in their home opener, giving first-year head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/terry-nooner/1136">Terry Nooner</a>&nbsp;his first win as a head coach Wednesday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.

"I'm happy to get my first win of my career," Nooner said. "It was a great experience. It's been a lot of hard work, and it's just a testament to our team We did a good job of following a great game plan with only one day of prep."

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/tre-zure-jobe/7624">Tre'Zure Jobe</a>&nbsp;led the Shockers (1-1) in scoring with 13 points, followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/daniela-abies/7503">Daniela Abies</a>&nbsp;with 12 points and 5 rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jayla-murray/7622">Jayla Murray</a>&nbsp;put up eight points and eight rebounds in her second Division I game, and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/salese-blow/7620">Salese Blow</a>&nbsp;scored nine points for the second-consecutive game.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jeniah-thompson/7512">Jeniah Thompson</a>&nbsp;snagged a game-high nine boards, and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/dj-mccarty/7509">DJ McCarty</a>&nbsp;recorded a game-high three steals.

Presbyterian (0-2) gained a 6-2 advantage to start the game, but the Shockers responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead and never relinquish it again.

Jobe scored six of her 13 points in the first quarter before Blow helped the Shockers go on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter.

Wichita State outscored Presbyterian 19-8 in the second quarter to go into halftime up 14.The Shockers had 24 rebounds in the first half, just five less than the entirety of game one against Oklahoma.

Abies started heating up on offense coming out of the break, scoring 10 second-half points.

The Shocker defense held PC's Aubrie Kierscht, the leading scorer against Kansas State to just two points as Christina Kline stepped up for the Blue Hose with a team-high 11 points.

Wichita State committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 17 Blue Hose turnovers.

Both teams struggled from behind the arc, going just 4-for-40 combined (10%).

After throwing for four touchdowns in a conference-championship-clinching victory over Independence, Hutchinson Community College quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/collier_samari_cpv0">Samari Collier</a>&nbsp;was named the NJCAA National Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

One day earlier, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore, was named the Jayhawk Conference's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Saturday's game at Independence was the second time this season that Collier has thrown for four touchdown passes.

Collier threw for career highs of 236 yards on four touchdowns to pace a Blue Dragon offense that racked up 346 total yards.

Collier connected with Oran Singleton for a 66-yard catch and run for a touchdown to opening the scoring with 5:44 to play in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;— The Kansas City Royals announced their 2023 team award winners today, which were voted on by the Kansas City chapter of the BBWAA.&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;was unanimously named the Les Milgram Player of the Year and left hander&nbsp;Cole Ragans&nbsp;was named the Bruce Rice Pitcher of the Year.&nbsp;Maikel Garcia&nbsp;earned the Joe Burke Special Achievement Award.

Witt Jr., 23, is the first Royal to earn the Les Milgram Player of the Year Award in each of the first two seasons of his career, after he became the fourth rookie in club history to earn the honor in 2022. Among American League leaders in 2023, he ranked 2nd in stolen bases (49), 3rd in hits (177), tied for 3rd in total bases (317), tied for 7th in runs (97), 8th in extra-base hits (69) and tied for 9th in batting average (.276).

He became the first player in Royals history to record a 30-homer, 30-steal season, and he was just the seventh player in Major League history to go 30/30 in his age-23 season or younger. Only four players in Major League history matched his combination of 30 home runs and 49 stolen bases in a season, including&nbsp;Eric Davis&nbsp;(1987),&nbsp;Barry Bonds&nbsp;(1990),&nbsp;Mike Trout&nbsp;(2012) and&nbsp;Ronald Acuña Jr.&nbsp;(2023).

Witt Jr. led the Majors with 11 triples, which marked the most by a Royal since&nbsp;Carlos Beltrán&nbsp;had 12 triples in 2001. He became the sixth American League player in the last 75 years with at least 30 home runs and 10 triples in a season, following&nbsp;Joe DiMaggio&nbsp;(1950),&nbsp;Mickey Mantle&nbsp;(1955),&nbsp;Jim Rice&nbsp;(1977 and 1978),&nbsp;Nomar Garciaparra&nbsp;(1997) and&nbsp;Curtis Granderson&nbsp;(2011). He produced a 2.3 fWAR during that two-month stretch, which led all Major League pitchers, ahead of&nbsp;Tarik Skubal&nbsp;(2.2),&nbsp;Spencer Strider&nbsp;(2.1) and&nbsp;Logan Webb&nbsp;(2.1).

The seven-year NFL veteran was Philadelphia’s starter for five years, and he started all 17 games for Indianapolis in 2021. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas football moved up five spots to No. 16 in the College Football Playoff Rankings, the organization announced on Tuesday evening.

The No. 16 ranking marks Kansas’ second-ever appearance in the CFP Rankings after making its initial appearance at No. 21 on Oct. 31.

Kansas (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) is off to its best start in the first nine games of its season since 2007, following a 28-21 victory over Iowa State on Nov. 4 in Ames, Iowa. The victory was Kansas’ first as a ranked team since the then-No. 16 ranked Jayhawks defeated Iowa State 41-36 on Oct. 10, 2009.

Following the win against Iowa State, Kansas climbed in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls, as the Jayhawks are ranked No. 19 in the latest AP Top 25 and No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Since 2014, the CFP has served as the postseason event to determine college football’s national champion on the field. The selection committee releases five rankings during the regular season, ranking teams based on the members’ evaluation of the teams’ performance on the field. Metrics taken into consideration include strength of schedule, head-to-head results and comparison of results against common opponents. The final CFP selections will be made on Sunday, Dec. 3.

The Blue Dragons finished with five players in double-figure scoring, led by Kernan Bundy and Kamryn Thomas' 16 points each. Dadrevius Weathers totaled 14, while Valentino Simon and Dallas Whitney each had 13.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (3-0) shot 49 percent from the field, knocking down 39-of-79 field goal attempts. The Blue Dragons went to the foul line 27 times, knocking down 16 of them.

Allen County struggled against the Blue Dragon defense, turning the ball over 33 times, leading to 46 Hutchinson points. The Red Devils were led in scoring by Grayson Ryan's 18 points off the bench.

The Blue Dragons scored 50 points from its starters and another 50 from its bench players. 

HutchCC led 53-34 and outscored the Red Devils, 47-30 in the second half.

Hutchinson will travel to Great Bend for the Barton Classic on Friday and Saturday. The 107 points scored are the most since the Blue Dragons beat Garden City, 103-61 on February 8, 2020.

Hutchinson (3-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Monae Duffy with 24, one away from matching her career-high. Duffy finished nearly perfect from the floor, knocking down 11 of 12 shot attempts.

Kiki Smith added 19 points, the third time in as many games the freshman from Topeka has scored double figures.

Liberal native Bree Horyna finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, marking her second straight double-double.

Journey Armstead (12 points, 6 assists) and Hailey Jackson (11 points, 9 rebounds) both rounded out the Blue Dragon double-figure scorers.

The Blue Dragons trailed by as many as 10 points in the first quarter and found themselves down 26-23 at the quarters end.

Hutchinson dominated the second quarter and led 49-34 at halftime.

The Hutchinson lead continued to grow as the game went on, outscoring the Panthers 58-29 in the second half to cruise to the 44-point victory.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Naismith Hall of Fame member Bill Self, one of just nine coaches all-time with 700-plus wins and multiple national championships, has signed an amended contract with the University of Kansas, Director of Athletics Travis Goff announced today.

With 773 career wins, two national championships, 20 conference championships, 18 first-round NBA Draft picks at Kansas and four National Coach of the Year honors, Self has had unmatched success with the Jayhawks. Since the start of the 2006-07 season, Kansas has won 498 games—21 more than any other team from a Power Five conference.

“Bill Self is undoubtedly the most consistent coach in college basketball, and a restructuring of his contract terms were long overdue,” Goff said. “In an ever-changing collegiate athletics environment, our strong commitment to Coach Self positions KU basketball to maintain and enhance its status as the most storied program in the country. Over his 20 years at KU, our men’s basketball program has been a primary source of positive alumni engagement, strong university enrollment, and revenue that has helped fund all other Kansas Athletics programs and invest in all 500 student-athletes every year. With him and his staff at the helm of our basketball program, the future of Kansas Athletics has never been brighter.”

Self’s tenure at Kansas has been one of the most dominant in college basketball history. He has posted a .811 winning percentage with the Jayhawks and led the program to 13-straight Big 12 Conference championships, tying an NCAA record. Self’s 566 wins since coming to Kansas also lead all active Power 5 coaches.

Consistency has been a hallmark of Self’s tenure at Kansas. Since Self’s arrival, the Jayhawks have been a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament 10 times. Self coached teams have also been a top-four seed in every NCAA Tournament since 2000-2001.

“I am very appreciative to Chancellor (Douglas) Girod, Travis Goff and the entire KU leadership team for their continued belief and confidence in me and my staff to lead this storied program,” Self said. “I know the Chancellor and Travis are as excited as I am about the future of Kansas Basketball. Self’s success has continued off the court as well. The men’s basketball program has posted seven consecutive term GPAs over 3.0 and set a program-record 3.29 GPA in the fall of 2022. The program has also achieved a perfect single-year APR score of 1000 six straight years and in 15 of the past 19 years.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—In conjunction with the Texas Rangers and Surprise Stadium, the Kansas City Royals today announced home game times for their 31-game exhibition schedule for 2024. Game dates and opponents were announced in July.

The Royals will begin their 22nd&nbsp;season in the Cactus League on Friday, Feb. 23 as the road team vs. the Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium. Kansas City’s schedule features 15 home games at Surprise Stadium, plus 2 games as the visiting team vs. the Rangers.

The Royals will host 2 night games during Cactus League play, on Tuesday, March 5 vs. the Chicago Cubs at 7:05 p.m. CT and Wednesday, March 20 vs. the Los Angeles Angels at 8:05 p.m. CT.

Seven of the Royals 1st&nbsp;8 home games will begin at 2:05 p.m. CT. Starting on Sunday, March 10, when Daylight Savings begins, 5 of the remaining 7 home games are scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT.

Of the 14 other teams in the Cactus League, the Royals will play all but two of them at least twice, including 4 games vs. the Rangers and 3 games vs. the Guardians, Angels, Cubs and Rockies. Hutchinson Community College football garnered two more Jayhawk Conference Players of the Week after a KJCCC championship-clinching 42-8 road victory at Independence on Saturday. &nbsp;

Quarterback Samari Collier was named the KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Linebacker K’Von Sherman earned his first career league Defensive Player of the Week award.&nbsp;

Collier is the sixth Offensive Player of the Week winner this season. Sherman is the fifth Defensive award winner. The Dragons have a grand total of 15 KJCCC Players of the Week this season.&nbsp;

SAMARI COLLIER – Offensive Player of the Week&nbsp; Collier threw for four touchdowns and had 256 total yards in Hutchinson’s conference championship-clinching victory. Collier threw for touchdowns of 67, 70, 65 and 3 yards against the Pirates. He was 6 of 15 passing, but had no interceptions. Collier also ran for 36 yards on seven carries to pace the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

K’VON SHERMAN – Defensive Player of the Week&nbsp; Sherman led the Blue Dragons in tackles with seven total stop in Hutchinson’s 42-8 win over Independence. &nbsp;

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boogie Ellis had 24 points and eight rebounds as No. 21 Southern California defeated Kansas State 82-69 in the season opener for both teams Monday night.

The Trojans led by 19 with 6:33 left, but that margin was trimmed to eight with 1:41 remaining before USC held on.

“We've got a lot of vets and people that are experienced and been through it,” Ellis said. “So we just stayed calm and came together.”

Touted freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/USC_Hoops/status/1721767783053332528">Isaiah Collier made his USC debut</a>&nbsp;with 18 points, including 15 in the first half. He added six assists and received a standing ovation when he went to the bench after fouling out with 4:50 to play.

“I thought Isaiah played a great first half, first game on the big stage here in Las Vegas. I thought it was important for us to get out to a fast start,” USC coach Andy Enfield said. “I thought Boogie and Isaiah really controlled the tempo in the first half. Isaiah got downhill and was able to get to the rim, made some great passes. ... I was proud of the six assists and 7 of 9 from the field. Very efficient tonight.”

A strong defensive team last season, the Trojans limited the Wildcats to 31% shooting (22 of 71).

USC held its opponents under 40% in 19 of 33 games last season and finished eighth in the country in field goal percentage defense at 39.3%.

Kansas State, which reached the Elite Eight in March, dropped to 4-2 all-time against the Trojans.

USC: Collier’s performance came on the heels of an impressive one by fellow freshman JuJu Watkins, who led USC’s 21st-ranked women’s team to an 83-74 win over No. 7 Ohio State. Collier and Watkins were considered by many the consensus No. 1 recruits for 2023.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' defense did its job again. Zach Wilson and the offense keep struggling to be something more than a stumbling, bumbling bunch. Wilson said there were too many self-inflicted wounds in a 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night. The Jets held Justin Herbert to 136 yards on 16-of-30 passing and the Chargers gained just 191 total yards but Los Angeles had three takeaways and sacked Wilson eight times while snapping New York's three-game winning streak.

Chicago Cubs hire manager Craig Counsell away from Milwaukee in surprising move

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have hired manager Craig Counsell away from Milwaukee, landing the former big leaguer with a record-breaking contract and firing David Ross in a tandem of surprising moves. The 53-year-old Counsell became the majors' highest paid manager with a five-year contract worth more than $40 million. That's according to a person with knowledge of the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms weren't announced. Ross went 262-284 in four seasons with Chicago, winning the NL Central in 2020 in his first year in charge. Counsell led the budget-conscious Brewers to five playoff appearances in the last six years.

Joel Embiid scores 48 points, 76ers beat Wizards 146-128 for 5th win in a row

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid scored 29 of his season-high 48 points in the third quarter and the Philadelphia 76ers rolled to their fifth straight victory, 146-128 over the Washington Wizards on Monday night. Philadelphia is unbeaten after a one-point loss at Milwaukee in its opener. In the third quarter, Embiid was 10 for 10 from the floor and 9 for 9 from the foul to help the 76ers extend their lead to 120-98. Embiid has scored 40 or more points 40 times in the regular season. He also had 11 rebounds and six assists. Tyrese Maxey added 22 points and 11 assists. Kyle Kuzma scored 28 points for Washington. The Wizards have lost four straight to fall to 1-5.

Harden has 17 in debut, but Clippers fall to Knicks after starting their four stars together

NEW YORK (AP) — James Harden scored 17 points in his first game of the season, but the Los Angeles Clippers fell too far behind with a rough start to the fourth quarter and the New York Knicks beat them 111-97. At times, such as when Harden raced up the floor and found a cutting Kawhi Leonard for a layup, it was easy to see why the Clippers' new four-star system can be so potent. Other times, such as when Russell Westbrook threw away a pass trying to get the ball to Harden to ignite a fast break as the Knicks were taking control, it appeared it might take a while before that happens.

Defending national champion and No. 1 LSU falls 92-78 to No. 20 Colorado in season opener

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Defending national champion and No. 1 LSU lost to No. 20 Colorado 92-78 on Monday night in the Hall of Fame Series. Frida Formann scored 27 points and Aaronette Vonleh added 24 for Colorado. According to ESPN, this is the first time since the 1995-96 season that the No. 1 team and defending champion lost the opener. Jaylyn Sherrod totaled 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Buffaloes. Mikaylah Williams led LSU with 17 points, Angel Reese had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Sa'Myah Smith scored 16 points and Hailey Van Lith and had 14 points.

Ex-college football staffer shared docs with Michigan, showing Big Ten team had Wolverines' signs

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A former college football staffer shared documents with Michigan that showed a Big Ten opponent had spreadsheets of the Wolverines' signs last year obtained before his team played Michigan. The material relied on intelligence gathered from multiple conference schools that had already played the Wolverines, according to the former staffer. He says he has since given Michigan the material along with screenshots of text-message exchanges with staffers at other Big Ten schools. The alleged actions are potentially in violation of the Big Ten's sportsmanship policy. Michigan is under NCAA investigation for impermissible scouting.

Shohei Ohtani, Cody Bellinger among 7 to get qualifying offers as 168 free agents hit the market

NEW YORK (AP) — Two-way star Shohei Ohtani was among seven players given $20,325,000 qualifying offers by their former teams as the free agent market opened for 168 players. All seven players are likely to turn down the offers by the Nov. 14 deadline to accept in favor of multiyear contracts on the open market. In addition to the Los Angeles Angels' offer to Ohtani, the others to receive qualifying offers were outfielder Cody Bellinger, pitchers Josh Hader and Blake Snell, Aaron Nola, Sonny Gray and third baseman Matt Chapman. By making a qualifying offer, a team could receive draft-pick compensation when high school and college players are selected next July

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team looks to go 3-0 in the early going of the 2023-24 season on Tuesday night as the Allen Red Devils come to the Sports Arena.

Tipoff for the non-conference battle is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will also be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 7:15 p.m.

The Blue Dragons inched two victories closer to becoming the first NJCAA men's basketball program with 1,900 all-time victories - Hutchinson is No. 1 in the NJCAA with 1,896 all-time wins - with a pair of wins on opening weekend at the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic.

The Dragons won their 16th consecutive season opener with a 91-82 victory over North Idaho last Friday at the Sports Arena. Six Blue Dragons scored in double figures led by 14 points each from J.P. Ricks and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>. The Dragons hit 12 3-pointers and forced 32 Cardinal turnovers.

Then on Saturday, the Dragon scored 57 points in the second half to pull away from No. 23 NEO for a 102-84 victory.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;scored a team-high 19 points and Dre Weathers added a career-high 17 points to power the Blue Dragons to the victory.

Allen enters play on Tuesday night also 2-0 with a pair of victories over KCAC junior varsity teams.

First-year head coach Patrick Nee saw his Red Devils defeat the Ottawa University JV 86-68 last Tuesday and the Friends University JV 97-68 on Saturday in Iola.

The Red Devils have been balanced offensively through their first two games with six players averaged in double figures. Dante Jackson is averaging a team-high 17.0 points, while Grayson Ryan and Killian Spellman are averaging 16.0 points per game.

Tuesday's matchup will be the 54th all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Allen. The Blue Dragons own a 44-9 all-time series record with Hutchinson winning the last meeting 92-84 in the opening round of the 2020 Region VI Tournaments.

Allen dropped to Division II two seasons ago.

At halftime, the 2023 Jayhawk Conference champion Blue Dragon football team will be honored.

Hutchinson averaged 84.5 points per game, shooting 43.8 percent from the floor, but only 26.5 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, the Blue Dragons allowed 49.5 points per game. Opponents shot just 25.6 percent from the field.

Neosho County (1-0) won its season opener on Saturday, defeating the Friends University Junior Varsity 112-57 in Chanute.

Five Panthers scored in double figures led by Myah Coleman's 16 points. Neosho County's defense had an incredible 35 steals in the game.

Hutchinson and Neosho County used to be KJCCC opponents, but the Panthers dropped to Division II two seasons ago.

Tuesday's meeting is the 30th in series history. The Blue Dragons own a 27-2 all-time lead in the series with Neosho County. The Blue Dragons have won the last eight meetings, the last was a 100-58 victory in 2021 at the Sports Arena.

This will be a three-game week for the Blue Dragons. After Tuesday', the Dragons will play Labette and Redlands at the Barton Classic on Friday and Saturday in Great Bend.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons take on Neosho in midweek tilt

For the 10th-consecutive poll, the Hutchinson Community College football is the No. 1-ranked team in the NJCAA Division I Football rankings.

As it has been through those 10 weeks, right behind the Blue Dragons is No. 2 Iowa Western.

No. 1 Hutchinson (9-0), the 2023 Jayhawk Conference champions, will play host to No. 2 Iowa Western (10-0) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

For the eighth-straight week, the Blue Dragons received 9 of 10 first-place votes and Iowa Western received the other first-place vote.

This will be the second-straight season that the Blue Dragons and Reivers meet in the regular season as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the national polls. Last season the Blue Dragons rallied late to defeat Iowa Western 29-27 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

This will be the first 1 vs. 2 matchup at Gowans Stadium since October 21, 2010 when No. 2 Hutchinson played host to No. 1 Butler.

Hutchinson has now been ranked in 30 consecutive NJCAA rankings.

Kilgore (7-1) remained No. 3 in Monday's rankings, but there is a new No. 4 as Copiah-Lincoln (8-1) edged past Snow College for fourth place.

Dodge City (6-3) remained No. 9 this week. The Conquistadors are the only other Jayhawk Conference team ranked. Highland is receiving votes.

 </figure>For the eighth-straight week, the Blue Dragons received 9 of 10 first-place votes and Iowa Western received the other first-place vote.This will be the second-straight season that the Blue Dragons and Reivers meet in the regular season as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the national polls. Last season the Blue Dragons rallied late to defeat Iowa Western 29-27 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.This will be the first 1 vs. 2 matchup at Gowans Stadium since October 21, 2010 when No. 2 Hutchinson played host to No. 1 Butler.Hutchinson has now been ranked in 30 consecutive NJCAA rankings.Kilgore (7-1) remained No. 3 in Monday's rankings, but there is a new No. 4 as Copiah-Lincoln (8-1) edged past Snow College for fourth place.Dodge City (6-3) remained No. 9 this week. The Conquistadors are the only other Jayhawk Conference team ranked. Highland is receiving votes.
