KANSAS-&nbsp;The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors is happy to announce the assistant coaches for the 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth. The assistant coaches are chosen based on the success of their season, as well as eligibility limitations and coach availability. The East assistant coaching staff features five coaches with Shrine Bowl experience, while the West assistant coaching staff will all be making their first coaching appearance in the Kansas Shrine Bowl.&nbsp; The 2024 Head Coaches, announced earlier this year, are Wamego’s Weston Moody for the East and McPherson’s Jace Pavlovich for the West.&nbsp; The 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be played at Welch Stadium, on the campus of Emporia State University, on Saturday, June 29th, 2024, at 7 p.m.

The Assistant coaches for the East team are Steve Buhler (6A - Washburn Rural), Jason Swift (5A - Shawnee Heights), Preston Troyer (4A - Tonganoxie), Mark Smith (3A - Frontenac), Garrett Michael (2A - Sabetha), and Shawn Seematter (1A - St. Mary’s Colgan).&nbsp; The East coaching staff had a combined record of 67-15 in 2023, with five of the seven coaches leading their programs to the State Semifinals. The East staff boasts plenty of experience with both Steve Buhler (2012, 2020) and Jason Swift (2013) having both been Head Coaches in the Shrine Bowl previously.&nbsp; Mark Smith, Garrett Michael and Shawn Seematter were all on the 2018 Kansas Shrine Bowl East staff that helped lead the East team to their most recent victory over the West, a 21-14 victory in Pittsburg. Smith was also part of a Shrine Bowl victory for the East team in 2004 as a player, the only former player on the 2024 East coaching staff.

Assistant coaches for the West team are Dominick Dingle (6A - Wichita Heights), Darrin Fisher (5A - Eisenhower), Jeremiah Meeks (4A - Wellington), Trey Teeter (3A - Holcomb), Mitch Gebhardt (2A - Southeast of Saline), and Nicolas Schmidt (1A - Medicine Lodge). The West Coaching staff had a combined 56-20 record in 2023, with 1A Assistant Nicolas Schmidt making the deepest postseason run with a semifinal appearance at Medicine Lodge. Outside of Head Coach Jace Pavlovich, the West staff will all be coaching in the Kansas Shrine Bowl for the first time. Only Trey Teeter, Holcomb, has previous Kansas Shrine Bowl experience as a player on the 2016 West team.

It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity that produces annual events and related activities, with net proceeds benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children, now known as Shriners Children’s. The Kansas Shrine Bowl has donated over $3.8M to Shriners Children’s.

Wichita, Kansas&nbsp;- The NBC Baseball Foundation announced today that the 90th&nbsp;National Baseball Congress World Series, powered by Evergy, will be held July 25-August 3 at Eck Stadium at Wichita State University. The NBC World Series has been held in Wichita every year since 1935, making it one of the longest continuously running sporting events in the nation.

“Tens of thousands of players have played in the NBC Tournament since its inception, including more than 900 who went on to play Major League Baseball,” said NBC Tournament Director Katie Woods, “We can’t wait for the opportunity to celebrate the tournament’s rich history, as well as showcase the next generation of baseball stars at the 90th&nbsp;Anniversary.”

The NBC World Series is the country’s premier summer collegiate baseball tournament, and features teams from across the United States. Founded in 1935 by Hap Dumont in Wichita, the NBC was played at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium through 2018. Many baseball innovations have roots in the NBC, including the pitch clock, the designated hitter and the batting helmet. Known for its unique promotions and high-quality baseball, the National Baseball Congress has had more than 900 former players go on to play Major League Baseball, including Roger Clemens, Satchel Paige, Ozzie Smith, and modern stars like the Texas Rangers’ Josh Jung.

As part of the 90th&nbsp;anniversary, the NBC teamed up with Old Fort Baseball Co., based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to design a 90th&nbsp;logo. Paying homage to elements of prior NBC logos throughout the decades, the anniversary logo will be seen on merchandise and promotional items throughout 2024.

“Old Fort Baseball Co. is a company founded on a deep love for local baseball, and baseball history,” said Woods, “The Fort Wayne Voltmen have a special place in NBC history as the first team to win three consecutive championships, and are one of the reasons that Old Fort was created. Partnering with a company as passionate about the success of community teams and the history of the tournament as we are, was a natural fit for the logo design.”

Sixteen teams are slated to participate in the 2024 NBC World Series, with bids being announced over the summer, prior to the tournament. Defending champion Hutchinson Monarchs (KS), as well as the runner up Santa Barbara Foresters (CA), receive guaranteed bids for their finishes in the 2023 NBC World Series.

WICHITA, Kan. --&nbsp;In a match that featured 39 ties and 15 lead changes in just three sets, it was Wichita State that made the clutch plays to come away with a 30-28, 27-25, 25-21 win over Drake on Wednesday night at Charles Koch Arena.

With the victory, the Shockers advance to the Fab 4 of the NIVC where they will host Montana State on Saturday, December 9 at Charles Koch Arena. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

Wichita State (24-8) got massive performances from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/morgan-stout/7491">Morgan Stout</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/izzi-strand/7498">Izzi Strand</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/natalie-foster/7483">Natalie Foster</a>&nbsp;to survive a gritty Drake team. The win is Wichita State's 34th consecutive victory against the Bulldogs dating back to the 2000 season.

Stout set the tone in the opening set with one of the best individual frames by any Shocker this season. The middle blocker had nine kills on 16 attempts without an error, adding a solo block and two block assists to become the first Wichita State player to score 10 points in a set this season. Wichita State needed every one of them in the longest set of the year; the Shockers had set point at 24-23, 25-24, 27-26, 28-27 and 29-28 before finally putting the Bulldogs away on a kill from Strand, who went on to match a career high with eight terminations.

It was more of the same in the second set, as neither team could extend the lead beyond two points. NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees have acquired All-Star slugger Juan Soto in a blockbuster trade with the cost-cutting San Diego Padres. San Diego received right-handed pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vásquez and Drew Thorpe along with catcher Kyle Higashioka. In addition to Soto, the Yankees get Gold Glove center fielder Trent Grisham. It's the second blockbuster deal involving the 25-year-old Soto in less than two years. The three-time All-Star has one season of team control left and is likely to get a salary around $32 million after batting .275 with 35 homers, 109 RBIs and a .930 OPS in his only full season with the Padres. San Diego acquired Soto from Washington on Aug. 2, 2022, after he turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer from the Nationals.

Proposal to create new tier for big-money college sports is just a start, NCAA president says

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A day after NCAA President Charlie Baker made an aggressive and potentially groundbreaking pitch to allow some schools to pay their athletes, his proposal was met with praise, caution and questions from around college sports. Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey says any attempt to reform college sports will be addressed in five arenas: the courts, Congress, state legislatures, conferences and the NCAA. Ex-Jaguars financial manager accused of stealing more than $22 million, according to court filing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A former financial manager for the Jacksonville Jaguars has been accused of stealing more than $22 million from the franchise through its virtual credit card program between 2019 and 2023, according to a seven-page court filing. Amit Patel, who worked for the Jaguars for five years beginning in 2018, is charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of illegal monetary transaction in documents filed in U.S. District Court in Jacksonville. He is accused of using the money to buy vehicles, a condominium, a designer watch, cryptocurrency and other items.

Zach Wilson to start at quarterback for the Jets on Sunday against the Texans

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Zach Wilson is back in as the New York Jets' starting quarterback. Wilson was benched for two games after struggling in place of the injured Aaron Rodgers, but will be under center for the Jets' home game Sunday against the Houston Texans. Coach Robert Saleh announced the decision to start Wilson on Wednesday, a day after New York waived Boyle following two ineffective starts and signed Brett Rypien off Seattle's practice squad. The Jets also have veteran Trevor Siemian, who replaced Boyle in the fourth quarter of New York's 13-8 loss to Atlanta last Sunday. A statement from K-State Athletic Director Gene Taylor released late Wednesday said, “We have heard the concerns and the questions from K-State fans and friends around Nae’Qwan Tomlin’s indefinite suspension from the men’s basketball team."

“Situations like these are difficult. We know you want answers, but federal privacy laws largely prohibit the University and K-State Athletics from publicly discussing specific information around circumstances like this. Those laws are in place to protect our student-athletes, and more specifically in this instance, to protect Nae’Qwan as he is working through a process designed to support him and lift him out of a difficult time."

"Allowing for that space and time is critical, but in today’s digital age, that unfortunately can lead to the spread of rumors and misinformation — and in this case, much of the information on social media is incorrect."

“I have been monitoring this situation and overseeing Nae’Qwan’s suspension with Coach Tang’s involvement. While we cannot share the specifics that have led to this outcome due to the reasons stated above, K-State Athletics can now share that Nae’Qwan Tomlin will no longer be able to continue with the K-State men’s basketball team."

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team puts a five-game winning streak on the line Wednesday with a road trip to play the Cloud County Thunderbirds.

Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Arley Bryant Gym in Concordia.

With victories over Independence and Pratt last week, the Blue Dragons have climbed to No. 19 in the latest NJCAA Division I national rankings.

Hutchinson improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference.

The Blue Dragons are leading the nation in steals this season. Hutchinson is averaging 15.8 steals per game, forcing an average of 25.7 turnovers per game. The Dragons have six games of 10 or more steals this season. The Blue Dragons are also tied for 13th in the NJCAA with 6.2 blocked shots per game. Last season in Concordia, the Blue Dragons were limited to a season-low offensive output to that point in the season in a 90-75 loss to the Thunderbirds. The Dragons avenged that setback with an 88-82 win over Cloud County at the Sports Arena.

Cloud County's signature win to this point in the season with a 20-point victory at Coffeyville on November 21 (63-43). The Thunderbirds climbed to No. 24 in the national rankings after that victory.

Since then, the Thunderbirds have dropped 2 of 3 games, including an 89-87 loss on Saturday at Dodge City.

The Blue Dragons have two more games before the holiday break starting Wednesday with a road trip to play Cloud County.

Tipoff at Arley Bryant Gym is at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) at 5:45 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Daren Dunn (color) calling the action. Off to a 10-0 start and 4-0 in Jayhawk Conference play, the Blue Dragons climbed to No. 11 in this week's NJCAA rankings. The Blue Dragons face Cloud County on Wednesday and play host to Cowley at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday to close out the first semester.

The Blue Dragons earned their sixth 10-0 start to a season under head coach John Ontjes with a decisive 98-47 victory on Saturday over the Pratt Beavers.

Hitting eight 3-point goals in the first half, the Blue Dragons raced out to a 49-20 lead at halftime.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/jackson_hailey_x66o">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;led a balanced Blue Dragon offensive attack with 17 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;had 14 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;had 12 points.

The Blue Dragons posted their fourth 60-rebound game of the season in out-rebounding Pratt 66-31.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;had 15 rebounds and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/horyna_bree_rg28">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;had 12 boards.

Cloud County started the season going 5-1 in the non-conference portion of the schedule and are 2-3 in KJCCC play with wins over Seward County and Garden City.

The Thunderbirds, who are 6-1 at the Thunderdome this season, enter Wednesday's game coming off a 75-55 loss at No. 15 Dodge City.

Maimouna Sissoko had 27 points and 18 rebounds in the loss to the Conquistadors. The Thunderbirds were held to 34.8 percent overall shooting and turned the ball over 23 times against Dodge City.

Sissoko is Cloud County's leading scorer at 17.8 points and is the second-leading rebounder in the KJCCC at 12.7 rebounds per game.

Last season, Sissoko had 22 points and 10 rebounds in Cloud's 76-65 win at Concordia. She was limited to two points and one rebound in nine minutes in the Dragons 75-56 win two months later at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons are 7-3 in their last 10 trips to Concordia.

🏀 WBB: No. 11 HutchCC travels to Cloud for midweek tilt

GoPowercat.com has reported that one of Kansas State football's icons accepted the offensive coordinator job at&nbsp;Texas A&amp;M, GoPowercat was told in the early morning hours of Wednesday. Sources&nbsp;confirmed to GoPowercat that offensive coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://247sports.com/coach/Collin-Klein-3907" target="_blank">Collin Klein</a>&nbsp;has elected to move on from Manhattan for the 2024 season after spending Tuesday night "torn" about whether to head to College Station or stay in Manhattan.

So, barring another overnight revelation as he did a year ago with an offer from Notre Dame, Klein is gone.

Now attention turns to not only Klein's replacements as quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, but also to the status of freshman quarterback Avery Johnson. Early indications Tuesday night pointed to Johnson being solid with Kansas State despite his position coach, and the man who personally recruited him to K-State, departing for an SEC job.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Arthur Kaluma scored 26 points, Tylor Perry hit a step-back 3-pointer to cap the scoring and Kansas State beat Villanova 72-71 in overtime in the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle. Kansas State has won four games in the row, the last three in OT. Jordan Longino kicked it out to Eric Dixon for a wide-open 3-pointer to give Villanova a four-point lead with 1:20 to play. David N’Guessar made a layup on the other end, Longino missed a jumper with 25 seconds remaining before Perry — who had been 1 of 9 from behind the arc to that point — hit the winner.

WACO, Texas (AP) — RayJ Dennis had 17 points and seven assists, true freshman Ja’Kobe Walter scored 15 points with four 3-pointers and sixth-ranked Baylor remained undefeated with a 78-60 victory over Seton Hall in a Big East-Big 12 Battle game. Dennis and Walter hit consecutive 3s for the 9-0 Bears after Seton Hall got within three points midway through the second half. Kadary Richmond had 18 points for the 5-3 Pirates, while Dre Davis had 12. NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Javian McCollum scored 19 points and Milos Uzan added 17 points and 12 rebounds as No. 19 Oklahoma limited Providence to 20 second-half points in a 72-51 win. The Sooners scored 40 points in the paint, forced 15 turnovers and out-rebounded the Friars 40-23. McCollum scored 13 in the first half to lift the Sooners to a 35-31 halftime lead over the Friars. LAS VEGAS (AP) — NCAA President Charlie Baker says he wants the association to create a new tier of Division I athletics where highly resourced schools would be required to offer at least half their athletes a payment of at least $30,000 per year. Baker also proposed allowing all Division I schools to offer unlimited educational benefits and enter into name, image and likeness partnerships with athletes. Baker sent a letter to more than 350 Division I schools. He says the disparity in resources between the wealthiest schools and other D-I members is standing in the way of reforming college athletics.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Jaedyn Shaw scored the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute to give the United States a 2-1 comeback victory over China on Tuesday night in the Americans’ final match of the year. It was the second of two exhibition matches against China. The United States won the first 3-0 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday. Shaw’s second international goal came in front of her hometown crowd in Frisco. The 19-year old was making her first start for the national team.

SALINA, Kan.- The 2023-24 edition of Hutch High Salthawk basketball got off to a great start Tuesday night at Salina Central High School as both the Salthawk girls and boys earned a pair of big wins over the Mustangs.

In the girl's contest, first year head coach Kalen Hilst had his girls push the tempo and forced several Salina Central turnovers to turn into Salthawk points as the Lady Salthawks took a seven point halftime lead of 25-18 into a lead of 44-22 aided by a 19-4 run in third quarter.

The Hutch High girls sustained that lead to come away with a 56-36 win to give their new head coach his first victory after returning home to his alma mater this past summer.

The Salthawks were led by sophomore Grace Posch with 18 points although Posch went down in the fourth quarter to what looked like a severe leg cramp. Sophomore Kohlbie Craft followed with nine points including scoring seven 2nd half poi9nts. The Salthawks seven points apiece from Azariah Dawes, Rachel Tomac and Kaia Smith. Payzlee Regier also added six points off the bench.

Salina Central was led by Saniya Triplett with 13 points with six of those points coming in the fourth quarter.

In the boys game, the Salthawks super junior guard Terrell King only played two and a half quarters after picking up two quick fouls in the first quarter, but let the Salthawks with 25 points, 19 in the second half.

Hutch trailed 19-18 at the end of the first quarter and were down four 34-30 at halftime. Still trailing by one 46-45 going into the fourth, the Salthawks knocked down free throw after free throw going 33 of 39 from the charity strip to pull away 67-59 over the Mustangs.

Contributing 20 points as well was senior forward Julian Smith who hit five fourth quarter free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Hutch High only scored four field goals in the first half, but went 20 for 22 from the charity strip to stay in the game while King was saddled with foul trouble.

Jay Lewis, Lucas Witt and Daylee VanSyckle paced the Salthawks with five points each and Tai Clark added seven.

Salina Central's sophomore Kaden Snyder led the Mustangs with 21 points followed up by Mason Nemechek with 13 and Dezmyn Gibson with 13 points in the loss. Nemechek had the hot hand early in the first half with seven first quarter points but was shut down in the second half and held to only one basket in the fourth quarter.

Hutch High travels to Buhler on Friday night with the girls game tipping off at 6pm followed by the boys game at 7:30pm.&nbsp;

Undaunted, the Roos responded by outscoring their mighty neighbor to the west 19-14 heading into the break, then kept coming in the second half.
