HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Longtime radio voice of the Blue Dragons Glen Grunwald was honored on Tuesday for his 26 years of calling Hutchinson Community College men's basketball and football games on EAGLE Media stations, Country 102.9 and KWBW.

Grunwald joined the Blue Dragon broadcast crew in the 1997-98 season.

Since then, Grunwald has called 1,556 games and 1,248 as the Voice of the Blue Dragons. He has called 688 Blue Dragon men's basketball wins and 189 football wins.

In addition to his time as the lead Blue Dragon play-by-play voice, Grunwald has called numerous games as part of the NJCAA DI Men's Basketball Tournament and the NJCAA DI Volleyball Tournament broadcast crews.

Grunwald took over as the Sports Director at EAGLE Media in Hutchinson in 2019, replacing former Voice of the Blue Dragons, Rusty Hilst.

He has received the Hod Humiston Award by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters in 2017, the Oscar Stauffer "Sportscaster of the Year" award in 2020 from the Kansas Interscholastic Activities Administrators Association and numerous other awards.

Most recently, Grunwald was honored as one-of-three state finalists by the National Sports Media Association for Kansas "Sportscaster of the Year" for 2023.

Grunwald called the 2017 National Championship game in which the Blue Dragon men's basketball team defeated Eastern Florida State, as well as the first-ever football national title in program history in 2021.

The Blue Dragon Athletic Department awarded Grunwald and his wife Christi each with a rocking chair at the Region VI Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday.&nbsp;

He will continue to call the Blue Dragon men's basketball games for as long as they keep playing, including the Region VI Tournament semifinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Cowley College in the Sports Arena.

Grunwald announced earlier this year that he will be stepping down as the Voice of the Blue Dragons to spend more time with his wife and family. Grunwald plans to continue serving as the voice of the Hutchinson High School Salthawks for years to come.

With two on and two out,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/ryan-callahan/7594">Ryan Callahan</a>&nbsp;ripped an RBI single to get the scoring started, followed by a two-run triple from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jordan-rogers/7538">Jordan Rogers</a>&nbsp;that made it 3-0.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/seth-stroh/7543">Seth Stroh</a>&nbsp;followed with a bouncer to second that Rhett Stokes threw away, bringing home Rogers for a 4-0 advantage.

That was more than enough support for Dobbs (3-1), who allowed a leadoff double in the first and no hits afterward over five sparkling innings. The freshman struck out a career-high six without issuing a walk, retiring 14 of the final 16 batters he faced.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi is dealing with a leg injury that will likely cause him to miss the team's next match. Messi checked out of Wednesday's 3-1 win over Nashville just a few minutes into the second half, and coach Tata Martino said the 36-year-old was experiencing discomfort in his right hamstring area. The team took him out as a precaution. Martino said Messi will likely be rested for Inter Miami's MLS match against D.C. United on Saturday as further precaution.

Multiple-transfer athletes can play next fall while a lawsuit continues, the NCAA says

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The NCAA says athletes who have transferred multiple times can compete in the next academic year. The NCAA issued the updated guidance Wednesday, with college basketball's portal season about to tip off. In December, multiple-transfer athletes who were denied the chance to compete immediately were allowed by a court to play through the remainder of this academic year. The NCAA says while it's not certain whether the preliminary injunction will remain in place during the 2024-25 season, multiple-transfer athletes won't have to sit out one year. However, transfer window notification rules must be followed. The window for college basketball runs from March 18 to May 1.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cincinnati coach Wes Miller admitted he was up late preparing to face No. 16 Kansas in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament, and a big reason why was he didn't know how the Jayhawks would play without Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar Jr.

The conference's two leading scorers were out with injuries Wednesday night.

“It was hard. You take out two guys who have done so much all year, both ends of the floor, you don't know how they're going to adjust. That part is difficult,” Miller said. “I thought our guys did a nice job with the game plan.”

So nice, in fact, the Bearcats were able to empty their bench in the final minute.

Dan Skillings Jr. poured in 25 points, John Newman III added 12 and the No. 11 seed Bearcats rolled to a 72-52 victory, picking up another important win for their resume as they try to elbow their way into the NCAA Tournament.

Up next for Cincinnati (20-14) is No. 14 Baylor — the third seed in the league tourney — in the quarterfinals Thursday.

“We didn't start the year to say, ‘Hey, the goal is to get to 20 wins.' We’re not popping champagne or anything like that,” Miller said. “You do recognize things that have value, and getting 20 wins is something.”

Dickinson missed the game after dislocating his shoulder in a 30-point loss to Houston last weekend, while McCullar has been dealing with a knee injury. Coach Bill Self expects both to practice Monday ahead of the NCAA Tournament, but that didn't help the 12-time Big 12 Tournament champions when they stepped on the floor against the Bearcats.

In fact, the situation grew more dire for the Jayhawks when, trailing 43-38 with just over 10 minutes left, they watched Elmarko Jackson come up hobbling, then saw KJ Adams Jr. crash to the floor defending a fast break and briefly leave the game.

Adams returned to lead No. 6 seed Kansas (22-10) with 22 points. Jackson also was able to finish and scored five.

“Obviously we were bad offensively and didn't make shots — didn't make any shots,” Self said, “and today was a night that things had to go a lot better for us shooting the basketball to have a chance.”

The fact that the Jayhawks were close at all in the second half was noteworthy.

Day Day Thomas, who hit seven 3s and scored 29 points in Cincinnati's opening win over West Virginia, remained hot from behind the arc in the first half. Simas Lukosius, who also had seven 3s and scored 31 a day earlier, did some damage at the rim. And by the time the Jayhawks came up empty on a final possession of the first half, they were facing a 38-25 hole.

Kansas dug out by holding the Bearcats to a 1-for-13 start from the field in the second half, and they were helped by a heavily pro-Jayhawks crowd inside T-Mobile Center that roared when their team closed within 40-38 with 13:30 to go.

But Kansas kept missing open looks, and that gave the Bearcats an opportunity to rebuild their lead.

"That start of the second half, we just got really stagnant. We had some good looks early, they didn't go, and we got a little tight and stopped playing aggressively," Miller said. "I thought our guys looked around and said, 'We’re going to go do it,’ and we got aggressive again, and then we had some good things happen.”

Self was back on the sideline after missing last year's Big 12 tourney when he was hospitalized with a heart issue. Kansas went to the finals without him, losing there to Texas, before playing without the Hall of Fame coach in the NCAA Tournament.

“Yeah, a year ago today I was messed up,” Self said. “So yeah, from that standpoint, I feel a heck of a lot better than a year ago, and today I'm not exactly happy or feeling great.”

Cincinnati lost 62-59 at Baylor on Jan. 13 when Lukosius missed two 3s in the closing seconds. The rematch will be even tougher with the Bears rested and the Bearcats playing for the third time in three days.

Kansas was once considered a potential No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament. Now, it could be looking at the No. 4 or 5 line on Selection Sunday. The big question is how much the selection committee will weigh the Jayhawks' injuries.

🏀 Cincinnati beats short-handed Kansas in Big 12 Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tylor Perry scored 21 points, making four pressure-filled free throws down the stretch, and No. 10 seed Kansas State rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat seventh-seeded Texas 78-74 in the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night.

Arthur Kaluma added 14 points, David N'Guessan had 13 and Dai Dai Ames and Cam Carter finished with 10 apiece for the Wildcats (19-13), who gave their flickering NCAA Tournament hopes a big boost by following their upset of sixth-ranked Iowa State to end the regular season with a win over the Longhorns.

Now, they get another shot at the Cyclones — the No. 2 seed in the tournament — in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Longhorns (20-12), who led 39-29 at the half before falling behind 67-57 late in the game, gave themselves a chance when Dylan Disu — the tournament MVP a year ago — scored on a putback to get within 70-68 with 28 seconds to go.

But when Kansas State inbounded the ball to Perry, and he was hammered by the Longhorns' Chendall Weaver, the officials assessed him a flagrant foul. Perry hit both free throws, and when the Wildcats retained possession and inbounded again, Carter caught a deep throw down the court and laid it in for a 74-68 lead with 18 seconds left.

Abmas answered with a 3 for the Longhorns, and Perry calmly made two more free throws. And when the Texas guard hit one more 3 with 8 seconds left, Carter stepped to the line and made his two foul shots to put the game away.

Abmas finished with 26 points to lead Texas. Ithiel Horton had 14 points and Dillon Mitchell scored 13, while star guard Tyrese Hunter was held to three points on 0-for-7 shooting from the field.

The Wildcats' biggest problem early on was turnovers, just as it has been all season. They entered the game 338th out of 351 teams in Division I in giving the ball away, and they did it eight more times in the first half against Texas. Several turned into run-outs for the Longhorns, whose edge in points-off-turnovers nearly matched their lead for the game.

When the Wildcats began valuing the ball in the second half, their comeback was on.

Kaluma took it upon himself to drive for a series of tough buckets early in the half, not only drawing Kansas State closer but getting Disu and Brock Cunningham into foul trouble. And when Perry hit a 3-pointer from near the midcourt line with the shot-clock winding down, the Wildcats had pulled ahead 48-47 with 12:30 remaining in the game.

Kansas State still led 69-64 with just over two minutes to go when Abmas made a falling-sideways 3-pointer from right in front of the Texas bench, then got another bucket to go moments later, making it a three-point game in the final minute.

Texas hoped to improve its NCAA Tournament seed in Kansas City. It will likely be on the 8- or 9-line come Sunday.

Rogers was 5-for-9 from beyond the arc, marking his fourth straight game with 5+ three-pointers. He finished with a team-high 22 points on the same day he broke the single season school record for three-pointers. His 93 made three-pointers vault him past Sean Ogirri's record that has stood since 2005-06.

From there Wichita State's offense looked like a well-oiled machine. The Shockers made 19 of their final 22 attempts in the half after starting the game 2-for-7.

The offensive onslaught saw Wichita State turned a 13-point deficit at the 14:56 mark into a 13-point lead at halftime, 52-39. Wichita State set an American Athletic Conference Championship record shooting 72.4 percent from the field in the first half. Their 52 points set a season high and the eight made three-pointers tied a season high, set just over a week ago against Rice in Wichita.

Rogers (13) and Cortes (12) combined for 25 points, while four other Shockers had six points apiece.

A sight all too familiar this season was the start to the second half. Rice scored the first 12 points after halftime to make it just a one-point game just 5:11 into the half.

The remainder of the half would be a back-and-forth battle played within a four-point margin. There were 13 lead changes and six ties in the game, most of those coming in the second half.

With 1:56 left, Rogers hit the first of two huge three-pointers to give Wichita State just enough breathing room. Central Christian College of Kansas (CCCK) announced today it is re-launching its men’s and women’s cross-country program after a several-year hiatus. Leading this program will be Chad Clevenger, an experienced coach at both the Junior College and Collegiate levels.

Clevenger, a native of Ida, Michigan, has spent the past three seasons at McPherson College as the Head Cross Country and Assistant Track and Field Coach. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Clevenger coached over athletes to 10 school records, including the women’s cross-country record holder. His teams were in the top 20 nationally in team GPA in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and were selected as the KCAC Cross Country Team of Character in 2022. This past season, he had both a male and a female runner qualify for the NAIA national championships, a first for the school since 2015.

Previously, Coach Clevenger spent 11 seasons at Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas coaching their cross-country and track and field programs. He began in 2010 as the head men's cross-country/track and field coach. In 2016, Highland consolidated the men's and women's programs and Clevenger was promoted to head men's and women's cross-country and track and field coach.

During his time with the Scotties, Coach Clevenger was privileged to work with some outstanding talent. He coached 252 NJCAA national qualifiers, including Coshan Campbell, who was the 2019 NJCAA national champion, 219 All-Conference runners, and 52 All-Americans while his runners set 56 new school records. His teams did exceptional work in the classroom as well being named NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year 11 times with 83 of his runners named NJCAA Academic All-Americans.

"I am excited to get this program re-started and don the Central blue and gold,” said Clevenger. “Just stepping on this campus, you can feel how special of a place we have at Central Christian.”

He added, "I want to thank Kyle Moody and President Favara for this opportunity along with the other great people I have had the privilege to meet and get to know at Central. I look forward to help lead our students through the Central Core 4 of Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength."

ATLANTA&nbsp;– For the third-straight season, Kansas graduate Kevin McCullar Jr. has been named a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. Last season at Kansas and in 2022 at Texas Tech, McCullar was also one of 10 semifinalists for the award.

In its seventh year, the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award originated in 2018. McCullar is looking to become the second Kansas player to win the honor, joining 2020 recipient Marcus Garrett.

Joining McCullar on the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award semifinalist list are Adrian Baldwin Jr. (Penn State), Reece Beekman (Virginia), Johni Broome (Auburn), Devin Carter (Providence), Zach Edey (Purdue), Ryan Kalkbrenner (Creighton), Tamin Lipsey (Iowa State), Jamal Shead (Houston) and Zakai Zeigler (Tennessee).

Named to most every national player of the year late watch list and an All-Big 12 First Team selection, McCullar leads the Big 12 in scoring at 18.3 points per game. The San Antonio guard’s two triple-doubles are the third most in the NCAA. McCullar is second on the team with 39 three-point field goals made and his 6.0 rebounds per game are also second on the team. McCullar ranks in 11 Big 12 statistical categories.

A three-time All-Big 12 selection and two-time member of the Big 12 All-Defensive Team, for his career McCullar has scored 1,517 points with 745 rebounds, 338 assists and 217 steals. He has 107 starts in his 137 games played, including 58 starts in 59 contests in his two seasons at Kansas.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday, giving the Super Bowl champions some much-needed salary cap space.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the financial details were not public.

By restructuring the contract, which would have counted more than $58 million against the cap for the upcoming season, the Chiefs created more than $21 million to use elsewhere. That could include a much-publicized pursuit of help at wide receiver, their need for a new left tackle to protect Mahomes’ blind side, or in re-signing their own free agents.

Mahomes also adjusted his 10-year, $450 million contract in 2021 to help the Chiefs with their financial situation.

The Chiefs already signed All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones to a five-year, $158.75 million contract, which included $95 million guaranteed over the first three years. But that deal was structured so that it only cost $7.35 million against the cap this year.

Backup linebacker Drue Tranquill also signed a three-year, $19 million deal to return before Wednesday’s start to free agency.

The creation of some additional salary cap space also could mean that L’Jarius Sneed, who quietly emerged as one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks last season, could remain in Kansas City. The Chiefs used the franchise tag on him, which would equate to a one-year, $19.8 million deal, but many expected them to ultimately trade Sneed for draft compensation and salary cap relief.

Now, the Chiefs could keep him at the tag number or use their newfound wiggle room to sign him to a long-term deal.

Central Christian College of Kansas (CCCK) Athletic Director, Kyle Moody, announced today the hiring of Cody Bartlow to replace outgoing coach, Aaron Hoxie.

Bartlow comes to CCCK with 22 years of coaching and administrative experience. At the collegiate level, he coached at both NAIA and NCAA D2 schools; as a high school coach, he served in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area and, with club soccer, in North Texas and Omaha.

Prior to coming to Central Christian, Coach Bartlow served as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Midland University from 2021-2023 where his team posted a 29-18-7 (.602) overall record, including a 20-9-3 (.672) mark in conference. In 2021-2022, he assisted on the Midland University men’s program. This past year he also served as a club Assistant Coach at Sporting Nebraska FC. From 2020-2021, he was the Assistant Women's coach at fellow SAC member Southwestern Christian University.

He has won five district championships, advanced to a pair of state semifinals, and earned two district coach of the year awards (2018-20), as well leading a team to the TAPPS State Championship in 2018.

Coach Bartlow graduated from Dallas Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Interdisciplinary Studies, a Master of Education in Kinesiology, and a Master of Arts in Sport Management. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Management

He currently holds a C License from the United States Soccer Federation as well as a PFSA Level 1 Certification in both Performance Analysis and Opposition Analysis.

Coach Bartlow added, “I want to thank Athletic Director Kyle Moody, President Favara, and the search committee for the honor of leading the Men’s Soccer program here at Central Christian College. I look forward to building upon the strong foundation Coach Hoxie laid over the past 12 years. KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals today announced that All-Star outfielder&nbsp;Bo Jackson&nbsp;has been elected into the Royals Hall of Fame. Jackson will be inducted during an on-field ceremony on Saturday, June 29 prior to the Royals game that afternoon vs. the Cleveland Guardians.

Jackson was placed on the ballot by the Royals Hall of Fame Executive Board and elected through the Royals Hall of Fame Veterans Committee voting process. The veterans committee vote considers the candidacy of non-field personnel in addition to players and managers no longer eligible for election by Regular Phase Royals Hall of Fame Voting. The committee consists of 16 voting members selected by the board, comprised of Royals Hall of Fame Members, Royals Club Executives and media members. Candidates must be named on at least 75% of all ballots cast to be elected.

Jackson, the 1985 Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn University, shocked the sports world by initially spurning pro football to instead sign with the Royals in 1986. Kansas City had selected Jackson in the 4th round of the 1986 First Year Player Draft, a signing which resulted from the determined commitment of scout&nbsp;Ken Gonzales. On his official scouting report, Gonzales summarized Jackson as the “greatest pure athlete in America today.” The then-Royals Director of Scouting,&nbsp;Art Stewart, said, “It was Kenny’s relationship with the family that resulted in our signing Bo.”

Once signed, Jackson was a phenomenon unlike any player before. He made his Major League debut on Sept. 2, 1986, and recorded his 1st career hit. His 1st home run on Sept. 14, 1986 traveled an estimated 475 feet, which at the time was the longest ever hit at Royals Stadium. It was just the start of a string of near-superhuman athletic feats that made Bo not just a star for the Royals, but a cultural sensation.

Jackson scaled walls and launched throws like a superhero. His remarkable Most Valuable Player performance at the 1989 MLB All-Star Game, which included a memorable leadoff home run, cemented his status as a star among stars. Bo led the Royals with a career-best 32 home runs and 105 RBI during that 1989 season, then led the club again with 28 home runs in 1990.

“I’m so happy for my friend Bobo to get that call” said Hall of Famer and 13-time All-Star&nbsp;George Brett. “He was a great teammate and probably the most exciting player I ever played with. You’d see things that no other human could do on a baseball field or a football field. He’s one of the greatest athletes of our time, and it’s an honor to welcome him to the Royals Hall of Fame, where he belongs.”

Jackson suffered a hip injury playing for the Los Angeles Raiders in an NFL playoff game in January of 1991 which soon ended his Royals career. But where injury may have robbed Jackson’s playing days of longevity, he and his supreme talent delivered moments and memories few athletes will ever match.&nbsp;

The veterans committee vote considers the candidacy of non-field personnel in addition to players and managers no longer eligible for election by Regular Phase Royals Hall of Fame Voting. The committee consists of 16 voting members selected by the board, comprised of Royals Hall of Fame Members, Royals Club Executives and media members. Candidates must be named on at least 75% of all ballots cast to be elected.Jackson, the 1985 Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn University, shocked the sports world by initially spurning pro football to instead sign with the Royals in 1986. HUTCHINSON, Kan. -&nbsp;The 2024 Region 6 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will take place at the fabled Sports Arena in Hutchinson KS for the semifinals and the finals on March 15 and 16.

“With the NJCAA D1 National Tournaments moving back a week, it created a situation that opened up many venues that we couldn’t use in the past because they hosted KSHSAA state tournaments,” said Mike Saddler, KJCCC commissioner and NJCAA Region 6 director. “A couple years ago the Region voted to hold our tournament in Hutchinson in the years when our tournament wasn’t the same weekend as high school State.”

The Sports Arena was opened in 1951, and is home to the NJCAA Division 1 men’s basketball championship tournament. The Arena underwent a major renovation through 2016 and 2017, and now boasts three practice courts, fresh locker rooms, a weight room, and new offices, as well as mechanical and cosmetic improvements. This years’ men’s national tourney takes place March 24-30.

Saddler noted the uniqueness of the Sports Arena.

“The Sports Arena is one of the best junior college basketball venues in the country. It is as good of a championship-caliber venue as there is nationally, so for us to get to host our region championship there is wonderful,” said Saddler. “It also provides the men’s teams in our region the opportunity to have played multiple games where the national tournament will be in a couple of weeks, which is a huge advantage for whoever advances from Kansas.”

Second round (quarterfinal) games of the Region 6 tournament are on Tuesday, March 12, with winners advancing to Hutchinson for Friday semifinals.

Saddler and the rest of the staff of the Region 6 tournament are looking forward to being in Hutchinson come Friday.

“The city of Hutchinson is a great basketball community, so they are excited to have the Region 6 Tournament. They put on great tournaments all throughout the year, whether it’s the NJCAA Men’s D1 National Tournament, NJCAA D1 Volleyball Tournament, or the many KSHSAA State events they host,” said Saddler. “The Hutchinson community does a wonderful job supporting the events they host, and they put on a first- class experience every time.”
