HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sterling and Inman remain among the highest-ranked teams in Kansas, while several other Hutchinson-area programs earned consideration in the latest Kpreps.com high school football rankings released Monday following the opening week of the season.
Defending Class 1A state champion Sterling held onto the No. 1 ranking after opening the season with a 53-21 victory over Moundridge. The Black Bears have won 14 consecutive games and will make the short trip to Hutchinson this week to face Trinity Catholic.
Trinity Catholic, which opened the season 1-0, is among the other teams considered in Class 1A.
Inman checked in at No. 3 in Class 1A after an overwhelming 71-0 victory over Sedgwick. The Teutons scored 57 points in the first half behind quarterback Malachi Brunk, who passed for 199 yards and four touchdowns while adding 75 rushing yards and two scores.
Inman hosts Marion this week.
The Hutchinson Salthawks are not ranked in Class 5A after dropping their opener, but they will get an opportunity against one of the state's best this week when they travel to 6A No. 3 Derby. The Panthers opened their season with a 45-21 victory over Eisenhower.
Several other area teams are knocking on the door of the rankings.
Buhler and McPherson are both among the teams considered in Class 4A after 1-0 starts. Great Bend is ranked No. 4 and hosts McPherson this week.
Hesston and Pratt are among those considered in Class 3A. Hesston will host No. 5 Hoisington this week after both teams won their season openers.
Haven is among the teams receiving consideration in Class 2A after opening the year 1-0.
Hutchinson Central Christian is among the teams considered in Class 8-Man Division II after a 1-0 start.
