Mary Jane Brunk, 95, of South Hutchinson, died April 8, 2024, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. She was born July 6, 1928, in Pratt, KS, to Owen and Ida (Haney) Hurt.

Mary Jane graduated from Inman High School in 1946. For over 60 years, she enjoyed making and selling ceramic sculptures. Mary Jane taught others how to sculpt ceramics. She would sculpt nativity scenes, cookie jars, and large frogs. Mary Jane loved to collect ‘Precious Moments.’

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mary Jane attended Journey@South Hutch.

After high school, she married and had one child with John R. Smith in Groveland, KS. He later died. On July 27, 1951, she married Ivan Brunk in Raton, New Mexico. They shared over 59 years of marriage before his death on January 14, 2011.

Mary Jane is survived by her son, Dennis Smith; stepson, Larry (Dorothy) Brunk; son-in-law, Orvin Miller; daughter-in-law, Nancy Brunk, all of Inman; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; step-daughter, Peggy Miller; step-son, Robert Brunk; step-granddaughter, Kelly Miller; and daughter-in-law, Joyce Smith.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2024, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Howard Wagler officiating. Burial will follow in North Inman Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Kurt A. Wolfenberger, 67, went to be with the Lord on April 4, 2024, at his Newton residence. He was born July 2,1956, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina to Ret. Col. Joseph H. and Mary E. (Biddick) Wolfenberger. On March 11, 1989, he married Terri Benorden in Hutchinson, Kansas.

He leaves behind his wife Terri; sons, Andrew Wolfenberger, Joseph Wolfenberger and William (Anna) Wolfenberger; daughters Lauren Wolfenberger and Hannah Wolfenberger; daughter-in-law Megan Wolfenberger; brothers Erick (Ruth) Wolfenberger, Karl (Heidi) Wolfenberger, and Paul Wolfenberger; sisters Brenda (Greg) Peterson and Greta (Michael) Kirk. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Holly, Kara, and Simeon. Erma Lee Rucker, 87, died April 7, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Erma passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was born October 31, 1936, in Trousdale, Kansas, to Gilbert and Zelma (DeHaven) O’Neal.

Erma graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1954. She worked as an administrative assistant for a printing company. Erma was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson. She participated in the Altar Society and the Adoration Chapel there. Erma was a passionate reader since childhood and especially enjoyed cozy mystery novels.

On November 20, 1954, she married Jack Rucker, in Hutchinson. They shared 57 years of marriage before his passing on April 8, 2012.

Erma is survived by: her children, Charles Sundgren (Kay Kimmel), Richland, WA, Vickie Broxterman (Bob), Topeka, Mary Pessaran, Fulsom, CA, Gary Rucker, Hutchinson, Mark Rucker (Suzanne), Tonganoxie; son-in-law, Jeff Taylor (Julie), Topeka; grandchildren, Matthew Rucker (Megan), Benjamin Broxterman (Stephanie), Adam Broxterman, Rebecca Stanton (Jared), Christina Stender (Phil), Nathan Broxterman (Samantha), Sarah Sundgren (Chris Patrick), Aaron Broxterman (Whitney), Kaley Taylor, Alyssa Rucker, Camille Taylor, Alex Rucker; and 14 great-grandchildren.

William Harold Robertson Jr, 61, was born February 22, 1963, to Bill Sr and Carol Robertson in Pennsylvania. He passed away April 8, 2024, at his home in Hutchinson, surrounded by family.

He was preceded in death by both parents, his brother, Walter Robertson, and sister, Carol Fetzer.

He enjoyed going fishing and working on cars. He will always be a rock and roll guy, forever remembered as "little in stature, big on personality."

Bill left us too soon, and while we know he's rejoined his dog Jake, he will be deeply missed by all.

Bessie Ruth Huxman, 92, of Pretty Prairie, passed away April 4, 2024, at Prairie Sunset Home. She was born June 7, 1931, in Pretty Prairie, to Tobias and Fannie (Graber) Schrag.

Bessie graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1949 and was senior class president. She was a homemaker as well as a dairy farmer's wife. Bessie also worked at Prairie Sunset Home, as an Avon representative and taking care of people both young and old. She also volunteered at Et Cetera shop in Hutchinson for many years which she thoroughly enjoyed. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting and was an excellent cook and baker. Bessie was a member of First Mennonite Church in Pretty Prairie where she was involved in music, Sunday School, and the Sewing Society.

On June 1, 1950, she married Clarence “Dale” Huxman, in Pretty Prairie. They shared 59 years together before he passed away on August 6, 2009.

Bessie is survived by her children: Lynette Peterman (Bill), Hutchinson, Dennis Huxman (Alice), Halstead, Cheryl Dooley (Tony), Haysville, Deb Ratzlaff (Ron), North Newton, Beth Darrow (Roger), Newton; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; infant daughter, Karen Sue; siblings, Erwin Schrag, Walter Schrag, Esther Albright, Ida Schrag, Emma Gehring, Joseph Schrag, Elmer Schrag, Elaine Goering; and infant, Johnny Schrag.

Sheryl “Sherry” Ann Fiedler, 70, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024, at her son Paul’s home in McPherson.

Sherry was born on March 18, 1954, in Great Bend, KS, the daughter of Anthony Carl and Geraldine Catherine (Leiker) Fiedler.&nbsp; She attended Roosevelt grade school, Park School, McPherson Junior High School and graduated from McPherson High School in 1972.

She was a homemaker, telephone operator for Southwestern Bell, receptionist at Madison Machine Works in Rockford, IL, and waitress at Miss Piggy’s Restaurant in McPherson.

Sherry was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson. She enjoyed going for walks, watching television, and camping with her family. For the past several years, Sherry enjoyed her friends and activities at Bluestem PACE.

Survivors include: her son, Paul Van Nordstrand of McPherson, KS; siblings, Gail Gill (Tim) of Stanley, NM, Janet Stine (Dan) of Roscoe, IL, Ronald Fiedler (Dee) of McPherson, KS, and Randy Fiedler of Moundridge, KS; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Kim Fiedler, Tony Fiedler, Jr., Roger Fiedler, Gregory Fielder, Duane Fiedler, and Annette Fiedler.

Vicky Larson, 74, born September 1, 1949 to Marion and Lotta (Potter) Kinsey in Yates Center, Kansas, passed away peacefully April 5, 2024, in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Vicky was preceded in death by both of her parents, her sister, Lois Huntington, and her brother, Richard Kinsey.

She is survived by her daughters, Donette Porter, Jody Glenister, brother, Raymond Kinsey, sisters, Charlotte (Lonnie) Reese, Kora and Mary Lou, grandchildren, Christina (Stephen), Amanda, Nathan, Blake (Jessica), many nieces and nephews as well as extended grandchildren.

Vicky was a hardworking and passionate person who loved her family. She had many hobbies, including reading, crochet, sewing, knitting, hunting and fishing. She graduated with a business degree and worked hard for many years, jobs including accounting, insurance work, welding, and a mail carrier for USPS. She was a huge Chiefs fan and was not shy about her love of KC. 

Some of her favorite times were spending holidays with family, attending family reunions, and her beloved Bichons. She leaves Jazzy behind, but has now rejoined Piper and Keisha.Vicky was a feisty fighter filled with love&nbsp;and will be forever missed.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

She graduated with a business degree and worked hard for many years, jobs including accounting, insurance work, welding, and a mail carrier for USPS. She was a huge Chiefs fan and was not shy about her love of KC. Some of her favorite times were spending holidays with family, attending family reunions, and her beloved Bichons. She leaves Jazzy behind, but has now rejoined Piper and Keisha.Vicky was a feisty fighter filled with love&nbsp;and will be forever missed.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, donations for Vicky's final expenses can be made out to the family, in care of Old Mission-Heritage Funeral Home, and can be mailed or called in to the funeral home.&nbsp;

Fannie Mae Bontrager, 86, of Hutchinson, went home to be with the Lord April 6, 2024, at Pleasant View Home in Inman, KS. She was born October 8, 1937 in Hutchinson, KS to Dick A. and Lizzie (Yutzy) Kaufman.

Fannie Mae grew up on the family farm where she actively helped her parents in all the aspects of farm life. &nbsp;She graduated from Central Christian High School, Hutchinson, in 1955. &nbsp;On August 24, 1958, she married Maynard A. Bontrager in Yoder, KS. They shared over 52 years of marriage before his death on August 31, 2010.

Fannie Mae was a faithful homemaker her entire life and was known for her excellent cooking and baking skills. There were always cookies in the cookie jar and dessert at most meals, including breakfast. She paid special attention to the care given to her youngest daughter and was her full-time caregiver for over 30 years.

Most importantly to Fannie Mae was her faith in Jesus Christ and passing this faith to her children. Fannie Mae enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening, and serving in her church. She loved spending time with her family and family gatherings. &nbsp;She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Fannie Mae was a lifelong member of Yoder Mennonite Church and then Journey Mennonite Church.

She is survived by her: children, Patricia (Gary) Martin, Stuarts Draft, VA; &nbsp;Connie (Clare Goering) Stutzman, Hutchinson KS; Lyle (Tami) Bontrager, Wichita, KS; Gloria Bontrager, Inman, KS; and Terry (Angela) Bontrager, Wichita, KS; Grandchildren, Kari Martin (Chris) Hollinger, Karla (Brent) Sammann, Katie (Will) Harding, Tyler (Becca Pike) Stutzman, Taylor Stutzman, Trenton (Katie) Stutzman, Abbie(Scott) Kempin, Luke (Daniela) Bontrager, Libby Bontrager, Blake (Lainey) Bontrager, Drew Bontrager, Ben Bontrager, Emmy Bontrager and seven great-grandchildren; Sisters, Joyce (Larry) Parcell, Marilyn (John) Carmen, and Carolyn (Jim) Hartman; and sister in law, Barb Kaufman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Dick Kaufman; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ray Troyer; and son-in-law, Darrell Stutzman.

Raymond Cecil Chambers, 71, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at his home in Hutchinson, KS. He was born April 28, 1952, in Alva, OK, the son of Raymond and Marjorie (Rudy) Chambers. Cecil was raised by his aunt and uncle Igean and Marion Benton after his parents passed away at a young age.

Cecil graduated from Hutchinson High School. He worked in maintenance for 26 years at Carey Salt, Liberty Homes for 10 years and at Color by Design for 5 years before retiring. Cecil enjoyed fishing, motorcycle riding and gardening. On January 9, 2010, he married Bonnie Collins in Hutchinson.

Cecil is preceded in death by his parents; aunt and uncle, Igean and Marion; sister, Martha Davis; brother-in-law’s, Luis Perez, Bill Collins, Michael Ray; and James Collins.

Raymond Cecil Chambers |1952-2024|

Violet Arlene (Troyer) Miller was born October 13, 1926, near Conway, Kansas, Violet was the daughter of Ora and Lydia Ann (Miller) Troyer. Violet passed away April 6th, 2024, in Goessel, Kansas.

At age 4, the family moved to the Kalona, Iowa area. She attended a one room country school when she came of school age. She was blessed by having Christian parents and teachers, and accepted Christ at a young age, dedicating her life to living her faith in the Mennonite Church.

After two years of high school in Kalona, she graduated from Hesston Academy in 1944, also receiving one year of college credit then spent another year at Eastern Mennonite College. At Hesston and Eastern, she sang in their choirs, an octet, and quartet. As a young adult she enjoyed teaching Bible School and Sunday School.

Violet moved to Kansas City where she worked for a year as a Nurse’s Aid in the St. Lukes Hospital. After graduating as a Registered Nurse from the LaJunta Mennonite School of Nursing in 1949 in LaJunta, Colorado, she followed the Nursing profession until retiring forty-eight years later.

In August of 1950, Violet was married to Donald R. Miller. They made their home on a farm close to Hydro, Oklahoma. Four children were born, completing the family. She enjoyed homemaking and gardening, with part-time nursing until the children were older. The family moved and established a residence in Clinton, Oklahoma.

Employment was in the Weatherford, Cordell, and Clinton hospitals in medical, surgical, and intensive care wards as floor nurse and supervisory roles.

After the death of her husband, Violet moved to Hickory Homes in Hesston. She enjoyed her hobbies of reading, crocheting, flowers, quilting, and time spent volunteering at the Et Cetera Shop in Newton, and at the Villa.

Preceding her in death was her spouse, Donald, her parents, both sisters (Olive Brenneman, Ruth Wyse), a granddaughter Avalon Monroe, and a great-grandson Samuel Schenewolf. She is survived by her four children; Richard, Curtis and his wife Christine, Rachel, and Terry and his wife Marianne. There are 7 grandchildren; Curtis Edward Miller, Melissa Richey, Cori Hale, Laila Wheeler, Cameo Hughes, Hilda Alexander, and Josephine Schenewolf. There are twenty (20) great-grandchildren and two (2) great-great grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Whitestone Mennonite Church, Hesston. A second memorial service will take place in Hydro, OK and will be announced later. Inurnment will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery, Hydro, OK. He was born on September 9, 1955, in Wichita, Kansas, to Norman and Wanda (Fechner) Melzer.&nbsp; In 1976, he wed Cynthia DeThample. Married 44 years, they raised their 3 children: Scott, Jay, and Mark. He retired after 34 years at Boeing / Spirit AeroSystems and family business. He had a passion for his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren Rilee and Brantley. Hobbies of his included woodworking, fishing, telling stories, and taking care of his yard.

He was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia and parents Norman and Wanda Melzer.

Harry James Neufeldt passed away April 3, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center, with his family by his side, just a few days from his 93rd birthday. He was born April 22, 1931, in Moundridge, KS, the son of David and Katherine Dyck Neufeldt. He graduated from Inman High School. An avid farmer all his life, he was an active supporter of the MCC Sale, Kansas Crop Improvement Association, and a Lifelong Certified Seed Grower. He won the Kansas Bankers Association Windbreak Award in 2019 for his amazing row of special cedar trees he and his boys planted. He attended Hopefield Church, Moundridge. Harry was united in marriage to Geraldine “Gerry” Unruh on September 27, 1957, at the First Mennonite Church of Newton. She passed away on September 4, 2000.

Harry James Neufeldt |1931-2024|

The Greatest Generation has lost another warrior. Early in the morning of April 4, 2024, while sleeping peacefully, the Reverend Harold Eskil Nelson, age 100, of Manhattan, KS (formerly McPherson, KS) was beckoned to reunite with the love of his life, Evelyn, the only woman he ever kissed.

Born on his mother’s birthday, September 14, 1923, near Scandia, KS, Harold was the 7th of nine brothers and sisters to bless Otto and Olive Nelson.&nbsp;&nbsp;He often quipped that delivering a baby was likely not the way his mother hoped to spend her birthday.&nbsp;Growing up during the Depression, the family frequently moved from farmstead to farmstead as sharecroppers throughout Republic County. It was the Swedish Methodist Church of Scandia that provided stability, spiritual guidance and a community of care for the Nelson clan. Harold’s grandfather, Oliver Nelson, was a founding member of the church and his father, Otto, frequently sang the traditional Swedish song “Tryggare kan ingen vara” (Children of The Heavenly Father) at funerals until he was well into his 80s.&nbsp; For more than a century, there was always a Nelson in the church choir. This solid foundation molded the faith and theological perspective that would guide Harold throughout his lifetime.

Harold graduated from Scandia High School in 1941. Following&nbsp;graduation, he worked as a farmer for a year before enrolling at Kansas Wesleyan University in the fall of 1942. Proudly, Harold was one of more than 80 members of the Nelson family to have attended KWU at some point during their academic journey.

Harold’s collegiate pursuit of a history major was interrupted in Spring 1943 when drafted to serve in WWII. He volunteered for the newly formed Army Air Corps, later sharing in his understated manner “the decision was pretty easy when I noticed airmen slept in barracks while soldiers survived on the ground in cold, wet tents!” Harold survived 22&nbsp;missions as a B-17 tail gunner of the 341st Bomb Squadron, 97th Bomb Group.&nbsp; Flying from a base in Foggia, Italy his squadron was always escorted by the Red Tails, the heroic Tuskegee Airmen. Harold once shared, “I never had to fire my machine gun because the Red Tails were always protecting us.” &nbsp;On VE day, he returned to his barrack, sat on the edge of his bed, put his head in his hands and cried.

In 2022 while traveling through the South with daughter Nita and son-in-law Jack, Harold visited the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site and Museum.&nbsp; The staff was honored and thrilled by his visit.&nbsp; They posted Harold’s picture on their Facebook page and those in attendance asked to have their picture taken with him.

Harold returned to Kansas Wesleyan after the war. At convocation in Sams Chapel for incoming freshmen, a young woman in the audience nudged her friend next to her, pointed to a young man on the stage and said, “That’s the man I’m going to marry.” True to her word, Evelyn Eisenhauer married Harold at University Methodist Church, Salina, KS on July 25, 1948.

His love for the KWU Coyotes never faltered. In 1983, Harold was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity by Kansas Wesleyan. In 2015, Evelyn and Harold were joint recipients of the Alumni Service Award. The Harold and Evelyn (Eisenhauer) Nelson Endowed Scholarship Fund has been supporting Kansas Wesleyan students in the fields of Religion and Education for decades.&nbsp;

After college graduation, Harold contemplated a choice between farming or following a call to the ministry. With the money from savings bonds purchased during the war, he purchased farmland in Jewell County. That land is still farmed by Harold’s nephew, Ron Fredrickson, and Ron’s son, Jeremy. However, as a young lad, he had been transfixed by stories from his uncle, Oscar Peterson, who had served as a missionary in the Philippines during the early 20th century. That uncle was also one of the first of the Nelson relatives to attend KWU. Ultimately, Harold followed the spirit in his heart to serve the Lord. The young couple spent one year in Kentucky at Asbury Seminary. After one year, he enrolled at Drew University in New Jersey, concurrently serving the historic Woodrow Methodist Church on Staten Island, NY. While there, Harold and Evelyn were blessed with the birth of their first child, daughter Sonia Sue born in Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (1952).&nbsp;Upon graduation from seminary, the bishop of New Jersey approached Harold and promised the best Garden State assignment available, but the desire to return to their Kansas roots was a&nbsp;stronger pull.&nbsp;

Thus, Harold was appointed pastor of the Methodist churches in Gypsum, KS and Roxbury, KS (1954-1961). Sonia became the big sister to brother Douglas Ray (1955) and Anita Marie (1958). Subsequent appointments took Harold and Evelyn to serve churches in Phillipsburg, KS (1961-1968), Winfield, KS (1968-1972), District Superintendent in Hutchinson, KS (1972-1978) and finally First United Methodist Church, McPherson, KS (1978-1988). After serving as Associate Pastor for Trinity United Methodist Church of Hutchinson, KS (1988-1991), Harold returned to McPherson First United Methodist Church to do pastoral care until 2017. Harold continued to actively work for the church community until he was 94 visiting church members in the hospital or confined to their homes and calling membership on their birthdays and anniversaries. His talents for fiscal stewardship, youth ministry and congregational growth were appreciated by denomination leadership and key qualities that influenced his appointments.

Harold’s community service extended beyond the sanctuary. He was an active member of Lions Club for more than 65 years. It wasn’t unusual for him to receive a phone call during the middle of the night requesting he drive to another town to pick up a pair of donated eyes from a recently deceased, and deliver them so that another may see. Harold served in leadership positions for several civic service organizations, including the McPherson Chamber of Commerce. Evelyn and he were actively involved in fundraising for the restoration of the McPherson Opera House. He served on the Board of Trustees for Kansas Wesleyan University, Southwestern College and St. Paul’s School of Theology. Harold served on the original Board of Trustees for the construction of Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. He served as a delegate to World Methodist Conferences in Kenya, China and Germany.

In the early 1960s, the family spent summers camping in a tent or a homemade trailer at family church camps. For two summers, he led Methodist canoe camps for high school boys in the boundary waters of northern Minnesota. In 1964, on the recommendation of his district superintendent, he purchased a cabin nestled in Wahatoya Canyon between the Spanish Peaks near La Veta, CO in what is now commonly referred to as “Little Kansas.” Over the years that slice of “Preacher’s Heaven” was shared with literally hundreds of teenagers in MYF groups, family, church members and friends who experienced spiritual rejuvenation, relaxation, honeymoons and escape from the Kansas heat. Sharing their slice of heaven with others provided Harold and Evelyn with some of their happiest memories. Pre-dawn mornings evenings spent fishing, sharing conversation with friends and making popcorn over the coals brought them great joy. It is fitting that Psalm 121 (“I lift my eyes to the hills”) is engraved upon Harold and Evelyn’s shared gravestone and the traditional Swedish hymn “How Great Thou Art” will be included in his memorial service.

Harold transferred his love of farming to his lawn and garden, and enjoyed sharing his “crop.” During the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Harold spent days in the kitchen making his famous popcorn cakes to be gifted to friends and family.

One of his biggest regrets was he always felt he was too scrawny to play sports.&nbsp; However, he had a deep passion for the teams he loved: the Royals, Wildcats, Chiefs, the local high school teams, the Big 8 and Big XII conference teams…and his beloved KWU Coyotes. Doug once asked Harold why the family always had to listen to the lowly Kansas City A’s. “Because I’m a part owner,” he replied. For years Doug believed him! Travels to Kansas City for the annual Big 8 and Big XII basketball tournaments became an annual ritual during retirement. One of Harold’s fondest sports memories was attending Game 7 of the 2014 World Series with Doug at the age of 91.

He and Evelyn took great joy traveling to watch their grandchildren’s athletic events, concerts and performances.&nbsp; It wasn’t unusual for them to travel halfway across to the state to witness a grandchild swim in one race!&nbsp;

Harold is survived by his three children Sonia Nelson (Jeff Mackey) of Edmonds, WA, Douglas Nelson (Janice) of Bonner Springs KS, and Anita Wiley (Jack) of Manhattan, KS; five grandchildren Amber Atchison (Chance), Kyle Bergquist (Allie), Neil Bergquist (Anna), Tyler Klug and Jillian Nelson; five step-grandchildren, Greg Klug (Sheri), Denet Brightbill (Scott), Kevin Mackey (Lisa), Christy Green (Shane) and Brian Mackey; five great-grandchildren, Karson Stroda, Easton Atchison, Jack Bergquist, Theo Bergquist and Harrison Atchison; 11 step-grandchildren, Erin Mackey, Kirsten Mackey, Lindsey Mackey Nickolas Mackey, Alyssa Green, Cameron Green, Kaitlyn Green, Joshua Mackey, Sebastian Jorden Klug, Natasha Klug and Gage Smith; two step-great-great granddaughters, Jaiden Klug and Charlie Klug. Evelyn and Harold also have two former international student-daughters that lived with them, Gill Collingwood from Wales and Susi Konigseder from Austria.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Nelson; parents, Otto and Olive Nelson and all eight of his siblings: Leslie Nelson, Katherine Fike, Clarice Fredrickson, Clarence “Bud” Nelson, Vincent Nelson, Leroy “Al” Nelson, Irene Renken and Bertil Nelson.

Early in the morning of April 4, 2024, while sleeping peacefully, the Reverend Harold Eskil Nelson, age 100, of Manhattan, KS (formerly McPherson, KS) was beckoned to reunite with the love of his life, Evelyn, the only woman he ever kissed.Born on his mother’s birthday, September 14, 1923, near Scandia, KS, Harold was the 7th of nine brothers and sisters to bless Otto and Olive Nelson.&nbsp;&nbsp;He often quipped that delivering a baby was likely not the way his mother hoped to spend her birthday.&nbsp;Growing up during the Depression, the family frequently moved from farmstead to farmstead as sharecroppers throughout Republic County. It was the Swedish Methodist Church of Scandia that provided stability, spiritual guidance and a community of care for the Nelson clan. Harold’s grandfather, Oliver Nelson, was a founding member of the church and his father, Otto, frequently sang the traditional Swedish song “Tryggare kan ingen vara” (Children of The Heavenly Father) at funerals until he was well into his 80s.&nbsp; For more than a century, there was always a Nelson in the church choir. This solid foundation molded the faith and theological perspective that would guide Harold throughout his lifetime.Harold graduated from Scandia High School in 1941. Following&nbsp;graduation, he worked as a farmer for a year before enrolling at Kansas Wesleyan University in the fall of 1942. Barbara Sue (Neil) Davis 81, died April 4, 2024 at NMC Health. She was born January 27, 1943 in Fort Scott, Kansas to George and Mabel (Poe) Neil. On April 24, 1965 she married Leonard Davis at Enid, Oklahoma and he survives of the home.

Barbara was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton. She retired as a dietary technician working at the former Friendly Acres and Newton Presbyterian Manor.

She was a graduate of Stafford High School and attended Enid Business College. She enjoyed being outdoors and had a love for birds, cardinals were a special favorite. Barbara could often be found doing puzzles and sewing.

Her family was important to her and she looked forward to time spent with her loving family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Leonard; daughter Linda Franklin; son Jared Davis; sister Betty Padrick and 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers; and 3 sisters

Graveside committal service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Whitewater Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home

Bobby Joe Burnett, 90, died April 4, 2024, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was born January 10, 1934, in Powell, MO, to Vernon Clell Burnett, Sr. and Audie (Smith) Burnett.

Bobby served in the United States Army as a military policeman from 1956 to 1958. &nbsp;He was employed as a welder by Farmland Industries Steel Products Plant, retiring with many years of service.

On August 18, 1962, Bobby married Betty Joan Bunge, in Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;They shared over 61 years of marriage.

He is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Betty (Bunge) Burnett; daughter, Debbie Robbins; grandson, Austin Robbins; great-grandson, Brantley Robbins; and twin sister, Betty Fehdrau.

Bobby was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; infant son; and brothers, Vernon Clell Burnett, Jr. and Allen Ross Burnett.

Rickie D. Redeker, 74, died March 31, 2024, at his residence in Hutchinson, KS. He was born October 11, 1949, in Red Cloud, NE, to Arnulf C. and Mabel E. (Rickard) Redeker.

Rickie graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1968, and attended Hastings College, Hastings, NE. He served in the United States Navy and the United States Army for four years each, totaling in eight years of service. He worked as a road and bridge surveyor for the City of Lincoln. He enjoyed reading, attending church, and collecting knives and guns.

Rickie attended CrossPoint Church in Hutchinson, KS, and Red Cloud Assembly of God Church, Red Cloud, NE.

Donald Lee Patrick, 88, a lifetime McPherson County resident, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, surrounded by family at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Don was born on June 12, 1935, in Marquette, KS, the son of Gustaf Arthur Emmanuel and Alyce Dorothy (Peterson) Patrick.&nbsp; He graduated from Marquette High School and later attended Hutchinson Community College. On August 2, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Becker in Lindsborg, KS.&nbsp;

He served in the Army National Guard and worked as an auto mechanic at the local Ford dealership and for the McPherson Street Department.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen Patrick; two daughters, Pam (Barry) Pjesky and Darla (Tracy) Presnell, all of McPherson, KS; two sisters, Norma Jean Holm (Eyler Anderson) of Marquette, KS and Deanna (Ray) Applequist of Falun, KS; four grandchildren, Bryce Pjesky, James (Susan) Presnell, Aaron (Jamie) Pjesky, and Tyler (Susana) Pjesky; seven great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant children, Daryl Lee Patrick and Maria Jane Patrick.

Arthur August “Art” Wondra, 90, passed away April 2, 2024, at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on October 25, 1933, in Odin, Kansas, to Joseph and Agnes (Debes) Wondra. On November 14, 1959, he married MaryAnn Huslig in Cunningham, Kansas. She passed on April 28, 2020.

Coming from Odin to Great Bend in 1959, Art worked as a group leader for Marlette Mobile Homes and as a custodian at USD 428. He also worked as a local farmer. Art was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and former member of the Cheyenne Twisters Square Dance Club.

Stacey Larry Haines, a joyful soul whose journey on this earth spanned 65 years, left a mark on the hearts of those he touched before his passing on March 31, 2024. Born on December 1, 1958, in Mesa, AZ, he was the cherished son of Larry Robert Haines and Laverta (Bontrager) Moody.

With a profound passion for mechanics, Stacey was a master at breathing new life into anything powered by an engine, with a particular fondness for cars and motorcycles. His talent shone brightest as he lovingly devoted countless hours to the restoration and enhancement of his cherished Chevy Nova and Harley Davidson motorcycle, a testament to his dedication and skill.

Family was the cornerstone of Stacey’s life, especially the precious moments spent with his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy, sharing in the delight of Yoder Heritage Day Parades and reveling in the unique “toys” he crafted with love, from minibikes to go-karts, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Stacey’s legacy lives on through his loving daughters, Cassie (Matt) Sharp of Beggs, OK, and Christi Flynn of Henderson, NV; his devoted mother, Laverta (Merlin Krehbiel) Moody of South Hutchinson, KS; his caring sisters, Joni (Ellis) Gray and Kim (Tommy) Southall, both of Texas; and his adored grandchildren, Bella, Skylar, McKenna, Lawson, Rainey, Sophia, Stratton, and Scarlett.

Janice Kay McLeavy, 82, passed away March 27, 2024, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Lakewood, Colorado, following a short illness. She was born April 3, 1941, in Hutchinson, Kansas to John J. and Vida (Thomas) Russell. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1959 and Kansas State University in 1963 with a B.S. in Elementary Education.

Janice married Robert G. McLeavy on Aug. 4, 1963, at the South Hutchinson Methodist Church, their wedding being the first held in the newly-completed sanctuary of the church. She and Bob then moved to Denver, CO, where she began a teaching career of over thirty years at Allendale Elementary School in the Jefferson County School District of suburban Denver. She retired in 1995 with the designation of Master Teacher, having impacted the lives of over 700 students.

Retirement allowed Jan to pursue more of her hobbies and interests. Gardening from the first green sprout of spring to the first frost brought her great joy. She was an outstanding cook who was always reading cookbooks and watching culinary shows for new ideas and recipes. Jan was an avid baseball fan and loved attending Colorado Rockies’ games and Spring Training. Nature in its many forms fascinated her, whether it was watching the birds and observing deer in the backyard, or enjoying the mountain peaks of Colorado and exploring the Jeep trails of Moab, UT, with Bob.

Jan is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Bob McLeavy of Golden, CO, her brother, Ronald T. Russell of South Hutchinson, KS, four nieces and nephews, and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Vida Russell and her parents-in-law J.C. and Millicent McLeavy.

Mark Blakeslee, 69, died in his home on Monday April 1st, 2024 after a valiant fight with cancer.&nbsp;

Born John Marcus Blakeslee on Sunday June 13th, 1954 in the town of Rawlins Wyoming. His childhood was spent playing with his best friend Bruce Hootman. He graduated from Rawlins High School in 1972, forever proud of being an Outlaw.&nbsp;

He continued his education at Hastings College where played his trumpet purchased by his grandma Esther in the band and travelled the world. After earning his Bachelor’s degree, he continued his education at the University of Nebraska Omaha.&nbsp;

While living in Omaha he fell in love with Denise Hartline and they married on February 14th, 1979. The marriage was exposed to great obstacles that challenged their constitution and faith. Their 45 years together brought four children; Pete, Corrine, Cassie, and Whitney.&nbsp;

He was a masterful salesman and shoed the entire town of Dodge City working as the manager of Payless from 1986 to 1994. Mark was able to return to his passion of helping peoples when his friend Mike Hoar hired him at Youthville. He graduated from Friend’s University with his master’s degree and became a Marriage and Family Therapist. He never stopped furthering his education so he could expand his therapeutic repertoire that included hypnosis and addiction counseling. When he moved to Nickerson, he gradually switched from helping youth to counseling adults.&nbsp;

Mark volunteered his limited spare time to Hasting’s College Band and Kiwanis. What started out with him filling in as Santa turned into one of his favorite hobbies. He loved playing the Ho HO especially when it included his daughter Whitney being his trusty Elf sidekick. He was everyone’s favorite Mall Santa at Village Square Mall from 1995-2008. Santa then booked the occasional appearances that included the Nickerson Snowflake Festival, United Methodist Church, and Berridge’s IGA.&nbsp;

As driven as Mark was to help others his pride was his family. He was his family’s rock, best friend, role model, and biggest fan. He loved tapping his foot along to songs in band concerts, playing catch in the field, and cheering them in everything they did.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Denise and his children Pete/Tricia Sioux City, Iowa, Corrine/Ben Nickerson, Kansas, Whitney/Donnie Inman Kansas. His mother Marjorie Hutchinson Kansas, his sister Julia/Steve Gaithersburg, Maryland. His 14 grandchildren; Chance Hertel, ShaiLynne, BrookeLynne, and JosiLynne Blakeslee, Everly Krisle, Tanner and Taylor Hall, Alex, Cit, Gabriel, and Norah-Grace Wallace, Annalise Henderson, and Junior Rowley. One great granddaughter Callie Sally Ann Antosh-Hertel.&nbsp;

He is proceeded in death by his father A. Don Blakeslee, his daughter Cassie Elizabeth Blakeslee, and grandson Christopher (Sparky) Michael Henderson.&nbsp;

Celebration of Life service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary.

He never stopped furthering his education so he could expand his therapeutic repertoire that included hypnosis and addiction counseling. When he moved to Nickerson, he gradually switched from helping youth to counseling adults.&nbsp;Mark volunteered his limited spare time to Hasting’s College Band and Kiwanis. What started out with him filling in as Santa turned into one of his favorite hobbies. He loved playing the Ho HO especially when it included his daughter Whitney being his trusty Elf sidekick. He was everyone’s favorite Mall Santa at Village Square Mall from 1995-2008. Santa then booked the occasional appearances that included the Nickerson Snowflake Festival, United Methodist Church, and Berridge’s IGA.&nbsp;As driven as Mark was to help others his pride was his family. He was his family’s rock, best friend, role model, and biggest fan. He loved tapping his foot along to songs in band concerts, playing catch in the field, and cheering them in everything they did.&nbsp;He is survived by his wife Denise and his children Pete/Tricia Sioux City, Iowa, Corrine/Ben Nickerson, Kansas, Whitney/Donnie Inman Kansas. His mother Marjorie Hutchinson Kansas, his sister Julia/Steve Gaithersburg, Maryland. His 14 grandchildren; Chance Hertel, ShaiLynne, BrookeLynne, and JosiLynne Blakeslee, Everly Krisle, Tanner and Taylor Hall, Alex, Cit, Gabriel, and Norah-Grace Wallace, Annalise Henderson, and Junior Rowley. One great granddaughter Callie Sally Ann Antosh-Hertel.&nbsp;He is proceeded in death by his father A.
