Roger Proffitt, 69, of Haven, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024, surrounded by his family at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born October 4, 1954, in Wichita, to Ralph and Rocena (Barb) Proffitt.

Roger graduated from Lennox High School in Inglewood, CA, and attended San Jose State University. He moved to Kansas in 1981, worked in retail sales, and retired as a night manager from Walmart.

Roger had a passion for sports that developed at an early age. He excelled playing football as a quarterback in high school, college as a Spartan, and during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. Everyone wanted to watch him throw the football, but no one wanted to catch it. Roger’s love for the game continued throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed music, gardening, and spending time with his family and loved ones.

Roger is survived by: his close friend, Cheryl Proffitt; nephews, Jeremy (Nicole) Moorman of Granville, IL, and Joshua (Lisa) Proffitt of Haven; nieces, Stephanie (Joel) Turner and ReAnna (Ben) Wolf, both of Wichita; great-nephews/nieces, Jared (Blair) Moorman, Kaegan Moorman, Victoria Moorman, Cole Proffitt, Connor Proffitt, Ethan Wolf, and Mattelyn Turner.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Greg Proffitt; and great-nephew, Dane Moorman.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Elliott Chapel. Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday thru Saturday at Elliott Mortuary. Cremation has taken place.

The service will be livestreamed and the link to view it will be active at 1:40 p.m. the day of the service.

Brenda (Maley) Muhlethaler was born November 17, 1963, in Osborne, KS, to Carl and Hazel Maley. Brenda passed away 60 years young, on April 10, 2024, in Hutchinson, KS.Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Hazel, her brothers, Carl Jr. Maley, &nbsp;James Maley, Thomas Maley, and a sister, Mona Smith.She is survived by a large and loving group of friends and family. Her legacy includes her son, Stephen Osgood, wife Emily Osgood, their children, Carli, Braylan, Layla and Haisley; daughter Kimberly Williams and grandchildren Ethan, Collin, Nevaeh; daughter Rachel Muhlethaler and granddaughter Vela; son Kyle Muhlethaler and granddaughter Juniper; a sister, Deborah Turner and her husband Cord Tuner, a brother, David Maley, and too many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews to list- but Brenda loved every one of them. and truly was the soul of her family. She also leaves behind many good friends.

Robert “Bob” (that’s Bob with a “B”) Davis, 47, passed away at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS on April 14, 2024. He was born May 10, 1976, in Athens, TX to Gerry Don Davis and Pamela (Martin) DeLoach. Robert graduated from Brownsboro High School in June 1994. He enlisted in the United States Navy on September 12, 1994, and was discharged on November 16, 1997.&nbsp;

On June 7, 2019, he married the love of his life, Sandra Denise Hurst, in Hutchinson, KS.

Bob loved to hunt, fish, golf, and spend time with his family and friends. He was a true comedian and loved to bring a smile to everyone's faces. Bob’s favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys, whether they won or lost. All of his pride was poured into his son, Garrett, and all the&nbsp;accomplishments he had made along the way. Bob’s United States Navy accomplishments included National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3), Good Conduct Medical, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal Navy “E”, and Meritorious Unit Commendation.&nbsp;

Bob started his work career at Haven Steel Products Inc, Haven followed by 20+ years at City Beverage, Hutchinson, and a short amount of time at Stutzmans. &nbsp;He was currently employed at LDF Wholesale Beverage Distributor, Wichita.

Patricia Elaine Sawaya, 86, died November 3, 2023, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. She was born November 10, 1936, in Hutchinson, to Thomas and Clara (Crutchfield) Sewell.

Patricia graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1955. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. On August 27, 1955, she married Norman C. Sawaya, in Hutchinson. They spent nearly 65 years together before he passed away on August 17, 2020.

Patricia is survived by: daughters, Sharon Sawaya (Jim DeFries), Kansas City, Diana Sawaya, Hutchinson; sons, Jim Sawaya, Tacoma, Washington, Chris Sawaya, Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Linda Sewell, Hutchinson; brother, Terry Sewell, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; daughter-in-law, Nancy Sawaya; and brothers, Jim and Craig Sewell.

Memorial service will be held 10 am April 27, 2024, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson. An inurnment in the church columbarium will follow.

Lois Alma Johannsen, 97, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away April 13, 2024, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. 

She was born February 2, 1927, in Frederick, Kansas, the daughter of James Hans and Lola Emma (Speer) Christensen. 

Lois was a near lifelong Lyons resident. She graduated from Frederick High School. Lois was a farm wife, candy striper and nurse aide at the Sterling Hospital, and was a dietary cook for Hospital District #1 of Rice County for over thirty years. She was a lifelong member of the Lyons Ladies VFW Auxiliary from 1944 until her passing. Lois enjoyed playing bingo, Yahtzee, Uno, Shanghai, knitting, quilting, gardening, and baking cookies and treats for the VFW.

 On April 14, 1956, Lois was united in marriage with Leonard W. Johannsen in Raton, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on June 20, 1970. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, Glenn Wayne Widener; six siblings, Garland Christensen, Ivan Christensen, Flossie Bussard, Joe Causey, Margaret Winters, and Velma “Jean” Mallory; great-granddaughter, Jayden Hicks; and great-grandson, Cullin Herbison. 

Lois is survived by her four children, Larry Widener and wife Nejla of San Antonio, TX, Richard Widener and wife Linda of Wichita, KS, Janet “Kay” Wann of Hutchinson, KS, and Albert Johannsen and wife Cyndi of Wellington, KS; ten grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; and thirteen great-great-grandchildren. 

Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with Pastor Steve Sears officiating. Burial will follow at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, April 19, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.

Lois Alma Johannsen |1927-2024|

Joan Lafferty Mabes Christensen, 94, of McPherson, KS and formerly of Canton, KS, peacefully passed away surrounded by family at her and her grandson Shane’s home on Friday, April 12, 2024.

She was born April 17, 1929, in Little River, KS to Ernest Harvey and Viola Melvina (Coe) Lafferty. They lived on a farm two miles east of Windom. Joan had six brothers, Harold, Earl, Melvin, LeRoy, Herbert and Gene. She had two sisters, Aldena and Gladys. Gladys died in infancy.

Joan married Ronald Mabes on May 15, 1949, at the Methodist Church in Windom, KS. To this union four daughters were born, Jacque, Renee, Rhonda, and Michelle, and a son, Randy Lee. Randy passed away at age 4 1/2. Joan and Ronald divorced in 1972 and Joan, her daughters, and granddaughter, Kari, moved from New York to Canton, KS.

She worked for Farmers Alliance Insurance Company for 20 years and retired in 1994. Joan married Marlin Christensen of Galva in 1984. To that union she gained Marlin’s three sons, Brian, Joel and Royce.

Joan was a member of the Canton Community Church, United Methodist Women, and Naomi Circle. She was also a member of the McPherson Historical Society, Canton Literacy Study Club, serving as secretary for six years, and served as a chairman of the Canton library board.

Surviving her are daughters, Jacque Rinker (Ronn), McPherson, Rhonda Hamby ( Chuck), Canton, and Michelle Unruh (Brantley), Galva; three step-sons, Brian Christensen, Clearwater, Joel Christensen (Chris), Fort Calhoun, NE, and Royce Christensen, Olathe. Grandchildren include Kari Rinker (Anthony Singer), Chad Rinker, Shane Smith, Kelcie Sanchez (Domingo), Kristopher Klatt, Jason Klatt (Nikki), Amy Lohmolder (Caleb), Kurtis Unruh, Joseph Unruh (Jessica), and Lindsey Dellinger (Daniel), Calista Christensen, Kiley Arnold, Brock Christensen, Kayla Christensen, Kyle Christensen, Mary Irey Christensen and Elizabeth Annie Christensen. Great-grandchildren include Sky Mangers, Abby and Ava Singer, Dawson and Sawyer Sanchez, Theo Lohmolder, Laurelle Unruh, Izzy Sinnett, Chloe and Hailey Arnold, Emily Rose Christensen, Lyla Christensen and Maisyn Rene Christensen.

Deceased are Joan’s parents, Ernest and Viola Lafferty; her six brothers and two sisters; son Randy; daughter Renee and son-in-law Steven Smith; along with her husband Marlin.

Joan wrote that she wanted to be remembered for being kind, thoughtful and loving, but she will be remembered for far more than that…for growing up in a depression, raising rabbits which she herself refused to eat, for her love of her sisters and brothers, especially LeRoy, who was more like a father to her, for frequently moving her new little family around to the next town for work purposes, for her daring move across the country with a station wagon full of girls and two dogs to settle in and raise them in a remote little town before single parenting was common, for being selfless and taking care of everyone else’s needs and wishes first. She will also be remembered for her strength and endurance through great losses, illnesses and pain and very little need to complain through the processes, for her love of traveling with Marlin to whatever back road destination and restaurant he had found to visit, to the annual Christmas Eve celebrations where she thoroughly enjoyed herself with all the grands-playing games, including Farkle, and making her enchiladas for the frequent Mexican cuisine.

Joan loved reading love stories, especially Nicholas Sparks novels. She loved snuggling with each and every new baby that came along, including most recently, holding new twin great-grandsons, and was looking forward to two more coming soon. Joan loved her birthdays and let us know that we needed to help her celebrate each and every one. This year, instead, we celebrate her new birth into her eternal home. Praise Jesus for that, as we can look forward to being reunited again when it’s our time to take that next journey if we accept the Lord as our Savior, as she did.

Joan was an example of a life well lived and certainly well loved. She will be missed, but she will be cherished as a true lady in our minds and our hearts forever.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 18, 2024, at the Canton Community Church with Pastor Mike Miller officiating.&nbsp; The final resting place will be at the Empire Cemetery, Galva.&nbsp;

 </figure>Joan Lafferty Mabes Christensen, 94, of McPherson, KS and formerly of Canton, KS, peacefully passed away surrounded by family at her and her grandson Shane’s home on Friday, April 12, 2024.She was born April 17, 1929, in Little River, KS to Ernest Harvey and Viola Melvina (Coe) Lafferty. They lived on a farm two miles east of Windom. Joan had six brothers, Harold, Earl, Melvin, LeRoy, Herbert and Gene. She had two sisters, Aldena and Gladys. Gladys died in infancy.Joan married Ronald Mabes on May 15, 1949, at the Methodist Church in Windom, KS. To this union four daughters were born, Jacque, Renee, Rhonda, and Michelle, and a son, Randy Lee. Randy passed away at age 4 1/2. Joan and Ronald divorced in 1972 and Joan, her daughters, and granddaughter, Kari, moved from New York to Canton, KS.She worked for Farmers Alliance Insurance Company for 20 years and retired in 1994. Joan married Marlin Christensen of Galva in 1984. To that union she gained Marlin’s three sons, Brian, Joel and Royce.Joan was a member of the Canton Community Church, United Methodist Women, and Naomi Circle. She was also a member of the McPherson Historical Society, Canton Literacy Study Club, serving as secretary for six years, and served as a chairman of the Canton library board.Surviving her are daughters, Jacque Rinker (Ronn), McPherson, Rhonda Hamby ( Chuck), Canton, and Michelle Unruh (Brantley), Galva; three step-sons, Brian Christensen, Clearwater, Joel Christensen (Chris), Fort Calhoun, NE, and Royce Christensen, Olathe. Grandchildren include Kari Rinker (Anthony Singer), Chad Rinker, Shane Smith, Kelcie Sanchez (Domingo), Kristopher Klatt, Jason Klatt (Nikki), Amy Lohmolder (Caleb), Kurtis Unruh, Joseph Unruh (Jessica), and Lindsey Dellinger (Daniel), Calista Christensen, Kiley Arnold, Brock Christensen, Kayla Christensen, Kyle Christensen, Mary Irey Christensen and Elizabeth Annie Christensen. Great-grandchildren include Sky Mangers, Abby and Ava Singer, Dawson and Sawyer Sanchez, Theo Lohmolder, Laurelle Unruh, Izzy Sinnett, Chloe and Hailey Arnold, Emily Rose Christensen, Lyla Christensen and Maisyn Rene Christensen.Deceased are Joan’s parents, Ernest and Viola Lafferty; her six brothers and two sisters; son Randy; daughter Renee and son-in-law Steven Smith; along with her husband Marlin.Joan wrote that she wanted to be remembered for being kind, thoughtful and loving, but she will be remembered for far more than that…for growing up in a depression, raising rabbits which she herself refused to eat, for her love of her sisters and brothers, especially LeRoy, who was more like a father to her, for frequently moving her new little family around to the next town for work purposes, for her daring move across the country with a station wagon full of girls and two dogs to settle in and raise them in a remote little town before single parenting was common, for being selfless and taking care of everyone else’s needs and wishes first. She will also be remembered for her strength and endurance through great losses, illnesses and pain and very little need to complain through the processes, for her love of traveling with Marlin to whatever back road destination and restaurant he had found to visit, to the annual Christmas Eve celebrations where she thoroughly enjoyed herself with all the grands-playing games, including Farkle, and making her enchiladas for the frequent Mexican cuisine.Joan loved reading love stories, especially Nicholas Sparks novels. She loved snuggling with each and every new baby that came along, including most recently, holding new twin great-grandsons, and was looking forward to two more coming soon. Joan loved her birthdays and let us know that we needed to help her celebrate each and every one. This year, instead, we celebrate her new birth into her eternal home. Praise Jesus for that, as we can look forward to being reunited again when it’s our time to take that next journey if we accept the Lord as our Savior, as she did.Joan was an example of a life well lived and certainly well loved. Vernon Earl Kettering, 81, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024 at North Suburban Medical Center. He was born on May 20, 1942 in Pratt to Cecil Earl and Dora (Riley) Kettering.

Vernon graduated from Pratt High School. He worked as a Parts Manager for Anema's Auto Body for 25 plus years. He enjoyed golfing in his spare time.

He is survived by his children, Tammy Kettering, Richard (Nancy) Kettering of Oracle, Arizona and Terri (Fred) Spina of Alton, Missouri; sister, Marilyn Kettering of Thornton, Colorado; brother, Leroy (Dyette) Kettering of Hershey, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren with another on the way.

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents.

Ken Goering, 85, of Galva, Kansas passed away on April 11, 2024 at Pine Village in Moundridge, Kansas. Ken is best known as a community banker and was CEO of The Citizens State Bank and Home State Bank and Trust until his retirement in 2018 ending a 50-year career in banking. Ken loved to help people realize their dreams and aspirations and took great joy in seeing his customers, co-workers and communities succeed. Ken also enjoyed working with his older brothers Marvin, Duane, Melvern and Virgil on a variety of agricultural and other endeavors. Ken also had a special relationship with his big sister Margaret (Schrag) with whom he shared a birthday. Ken was actively engaged in a number of communities including Moundridge, Goessel, Hesston, Canton, McPherson and Newton assisting hospitals, retirement homes, libraries, churches and other charitable endeavors.

Ken was the youngest son and last surviving child of Joe J Goering and Emma (Schrag). After graduating from McPherson College with a business degree in 1962, Ken lived in rural Galva, Kansas with his wife Paula (Ratzlaff) on the same farm for 60 years. Ken enjoyed rural living and could often be found tending fruit trees and mowing grass. Ken has two sons, two daughters in law and four grandchildren. Eric and wife Ann (Ridge) and children Jack and Megan of Valley Center, Kansas; Theron and Jennifer (Angeletti) and children Elle and Ivy also of Valley Center. When not tending to his farm, Ken and Paula enjoyed travelling to many destinations near and far.

Merle D. Oldenettel, 93, a lifelong Haven, Kansas resident, passed away Friday, April 12, 2024 at his home. He was born in the house his grandfather built in rural Haven on March 17, 1931 to Fred H. and Ella E. (Meyer) Oldenettel.

He graduated from Haven High School with the class of 1949.

Merle was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He served on the cemetery board and was on the board of trustees. He also worked with AAL Insurance for Lutheran church members.

He was united in marriage to Helen O’Neal on February 14, 1959 in Hutchinson, Kansas. She survives of the home after 65 years of marriage.

He was a crop and livestock farmer. Merle was involved with the Kansas Livestock Association, Future Farmers of America (FFA) at the Haven High School and the Reno County Soil Conservation, winning several conservation awards throughout the years. In his free time, Merle would research ways to improve his farming craft.

Merle enjoyed reading and square dancing. He loved being social, often having parties at the house playing pitch. He was an avid hunter and spent time hunting with his grandchildren. Merle also enjoyed woodworking and did all the finish work inside the home he and Helen built in 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Oldenettel of the home; granddaughter, Kathy (Aaron) Nelson of Hutchinson; grandsons, Thomas Oldenettel of Augusta, Benjamin Oldenettel of Hutchinson and Robert Oldenettel of McPherson; and five great-grandchildren, Gabriel Nelson, Brayden Nelson, Ryker Oldenettel, Abby Oldenettel and Spencer Nelson.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Brien Dean Oldenettel and Jay Devon Oldenettel; brother, Floyd Oldenettel; and sister, LaRue Hays.

On June 7, 1975, Jamie married Monte Borders, in Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;They shared over 48 years of marriage.

Judy Ann Holloway, 73, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at McPherson Hospital.

She was born on December 3, 1950, in&nbsp; Herington, Kansas, the daughter of Harvey and Alta (Aldridge) Fleming.&nbsp; She graduated from McPherson High School in 1969 and continued her education at Hutchinson Junior College, Wichita State University, and McPherson College.&nbsp; On August 9, 1969, Judy was united in marriage to Gary C. Holloway at First Christian Church in McPherson.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two sons, Barry and Chris.

Judy was one of the first employees of McPherson Pizza Hut in the 1970s.&nbsp; She taught for 15 years in USD #418 as a classroom teacher and as a gifted education teacher.&nbsp; After she retired in 2005, she was a substitute teacher and an adjunct professor at Tabor College for two years.

She loved to play tennis and tried to please her husband by playing golf with him, even though she hated the game.&nbsp; Judy adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She wrote two children’s education books and had them published.&nbsp; She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and helped with many school activities. Judy loved watching her sons and grandchildren play their sports.&nbsp; She enjoyed trips to Hawaii and was the all-time best at shop-‘til-you-drop.&nbsp; She worked with the Blessings Boutique gang at the church for their annual fundraiser.&nbsp; In her spare time, she loved reading and playing cards (especially Krypto with her good friend Donna Viola), board games, and playing the slot machines at the casino.

Survivors include: her loving husband of 54 years, Gary Holloway; a son, Chris (Julie) Holloway of McPherson, KS; a sister, Karla (R.J.) Reutiman of Centennial, CO; two grandchildren, Baylee (Hunter) Dixon of South Hutchinson, KS and Carter Holloway of Manhattan, KS; two great-grandchildren, Briggs Dixon and Wrenley Dixon; and many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Alta Fleming; a son, Barry Holloway; sister, Jan Pecoraro; two nieces, Kerstin Hall and Stacey Bruza; and a nephew, Jeff Myers.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at McPherson Cemetery with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating.&nbsp;

 </figure>Judy Ann Holloway, 73, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at McPherson Hospital.She was born on December 3, 1950, in&nbsp; Herington, Kansas, the daughter of Harvey and Alta (Aldridge) Fleming.&nbsp; She graduated from McPherson High School in 1969 and continued her education at Hutchinson Junior College, Wichita State University, and McPherson College.&nbsp; On August 9, 1969, Judy was united in marriage to Gary C. Holloway at First Christian Church in McPherson.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two sons, Barry and Chris.Judy was one of the first employees of McPherson Pizza Hut in the 1970s.&nbsp; She taught for 15 years in USD #418 as a classroom teacher and as a gifted education teacher.&nbsp; After she retired in 2005, she was a substitute teacher and an adjunct professor at Tabor College for two years.She loved to play tennis and tried to please her husband by playing golf with him, even though she hated the game.&nbsp; Judy adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She wrote two children’s education books and had them published.&nbsp; She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and helped with many school activities. Judy loved watching her sons and grandchildren play their sports.&nbsp; She enjoyed trips to Hawaii and was the all-time best at shop-‘til-you-drop.&nbsp; She worked with the Blessings Boutique gang at the church for their annual fundraiser.&nbsp; In her spare time, she loved reading and playing cards (especially Krypto with her good friend Donna Viola), board games, and playing the slot machines at the casino.Survivors include: her loving husband of 54 years, Gary Holloway; a son, Chris (Julie) Holloway of McPherson, KS; a sister, Karla (R.J.) Born the 14th of 17 children on January 26th 1928, and bestowed the honor of the name Bert Chaney Jr; whether his family had simply run out of names or because they knew he was destined for greatness is unknown but he lived up to the latter. He was born to Bert and Eva Katherine (Richarz) Chaney on the family farm northwest of Coffeyville, KS. Bert was always a hard worker, starting his first job at the age of 9 working in a candy shop in order to help his family. He served in the Air Force for 3 years. &nbsp;He graduated from Pittsburg State with his BS and Master’s Degree in political science.

Bert was extremely proud of his career in education. He began teaching junior high students in Kansas City, KS. While there, he met the love of his life, Marilyn Johnson. They were married April 4th, 1958 and moved to Hutchinson the following August where he began his teaching tenure at Hutch Juco in the fall of 1958, teaching classes in political science, government, and history. He would go on to teach there for 32 years. He was an instrumental part of implementing the GED diploma program within the local prison, opening education opportunities for thousands of people. He also coordinated a citizenship program to provide the training and education necessary for illegal aliens to qualify for citizenship.

He was always focused on civic duty and was a true man of the people. In 1966, Bert was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives where he served for 6 years and then served in the Kansas Senate for 12 years. Some of his proudest legislations included a bill removing the discriminatory height requirement for police officers and firefighters, a bill allowing citizens to purchase drugs by generic name, and the requirement for all children to receive the Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccine protecting the children of the state of Kansas. All these laws are still in effect. He was known for being a great defender of democratic government and strongly held the belief that government exists to help the average working person.

Bert was also a family man. He and Marilyn had 3 children; Melissa, Cindy, and Doug. They spent many summers traveling the country. He always wanted his children to carry the same values of service to others. These dreams were fulfilled as his eldest, Melissa, served as a teacher in Hutchinson for 36 years, his middle child, Cindy, served on the Hutchinson City Council for 8 years and held the title of Mayor, and his youngest, Doug, will be retiring after 25 years as superintendent/principal of Hodgeman County in Jetmore. He was also proud and actively involved in the raising of his 7 grandchildren. He enjoyed taking them on trips, doing puzzles together, and baking his famous chocolate chip cookies.

He had many hobbies and passions. He was a fan of cheering on the Jayhawks, often telling the story of his brief stint at KU as a student on the GI bill where he was housed in the basement of Memorial Stadium. Bert had a passion for gardening, which brought in many visitors to take in his beautiful horticulture. He also spent time beekeeping, to which he would refine his own honey and sell it to other legislators as well as giving it to family and friends. Bert was an avid reader up until recent years keeping up with all the latest research and politics. His grandchildren rarely left a visit without at least 2-3 cut out articles, always chosen for each person’s specific interest and passions. He was always teaching even when out of the classroom.

Ultimately, Bert was blessed to live 96 years. &nbsp;He filled that time with so many triumphs for which he will always be remembered. His life truly revolved around others; the students he taught, the constituents he served, and the family he loved.

Bert is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Johnson) Chaney; daughters: &nbsp;Melissa Law and Cindy Proett, of Hutchinson, Doug (Connie) Chaney of Jetmore; 7 grandchildren: Alex Law, Katelyn (Phillip) Twist, Abbey Chaney, Grace (Jack) Howard, Grant Chaney, Jack Proett, Candice Chaney; and 4 great-grandchildren, Lucy Law, River Law, Charlie Twist, and Hattie Twist.

He is preceded in death by his parents, all 16 of his siblings, and his son-in-law, Barry Law.

Mary enjoyed camping, fishing, peaceful time around campfires and cooking breakfast on the morning of the Valley Center Fall Festival for all who walked through her front door.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 59 and a half years, Bobby R., her son Tracy R, her daughters Cherie (Juan) Rodriguez, Wendy Richey, Crystal (Robin) Shelby and Heather (Paul) Bassi, her sisters Deva Coker, Carol Engstrand, Estle Adair and brother Harold Sullens.

Mary had 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 1 step grandchild, 1 step great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Edith Valle |1948-2024|

Eva C. Huntsman, 79, went home to be with the Lord on February 15, 2024, in Kyle, Texas. &nbsp;Eva was born on April 19, 1944, to Merle E. and Doris Bishop Thompson in Sterling, Kansas. Following graduation from Sterling High School in 1962, she moved to Topeka, where she met and married her husband, John Huntsman, on February 3, 1967. They remained devoted to each other until John’s death in 2015.

Shortly after their two children were born, the family moved to Lenora, Kansas where John worked for the Rural Telephone Service Company from 1971 to 1992. While in Lenora, Eva was involved in various community activities, her children’s school activities, and her church. Always willing to play a good board or card game, she also enjoyed crocheting, playing guitar, and spending time in Bible study in her spare time. She was very independent and proud of her children and granddaughters and was always willing to sit down for a chat.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, two brothers – Philip and Neil Thompson, and two sisters – Leah Currie and Twila Price.

Eva is survived by her children, daughter Debbie Duffey and husband Kevin, Buda, Texas, and son Dean Huntsman, Wichita, Kansas; two granddaughters, Kailyn and Kelsey Duffey; four sisters-in-law, Karen Thompson, Hutchinson, Kansas, Peggy Seele, Deer Park, Texas, Judy Carlson, Topeka, Kansas, and Deanna Kovar, St. Marys, Kansas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis Joe Zimmerman, 64, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2024 in Valley Center, Kansas.&nbsp;He was born in Colby, Kansas to Cloyd Leo and Rose Marie (Leiker) Zimmerman.

He enjoyed fishing, photography, amateur radio, and was a die-hard Chiefs fan.&nbsp;Dennis had recently retired and was looking forward to traveling. His greatest love was his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Kim, both his parents Cloyd &amp; Rose, and older twin brothers Darrel &amp; Duane.

Dennis is survived by his sons, Joshua (Kristal) and Jacob, both of Wichita, his brother Steve of Haysville, his sisters Robin Garrison of Russellville, MO, Teresa Rose (Glenn) of Wichita and Angie Crawford (Harold) of Republic, MO, along with several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Susan L. Livengood, 76, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2024, in Wichita, Kansas. She was born January 8, 1948, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Harold E. Reeves and Betty J.&nbsp;(Santee)&nbsp;Reeves. Her professional career was primarily spent serving in educational institutions, concluding at Friends University. During retirement she remained active traveling with family and volunteering for her church and the Greater Wichita YMCA.

Sue is survived by her husband of 56 years, Steven R. Livengood, along with her two daughters, Lori Livengood of McPherson, Kansas, and Kari (Corey) Ames of Maize, Kansas. Sue’s legacy lives on through her four grandchildren, Mea Ames, Andrew Ames, Lea Ames and Evan Ames. Sue is also survived by her brother James (Barbara) Reeves of Atlanta, Georgia; nieces Caitlin (Zach) Reeves Greenamyre of Atlanta, Georgia; Amelia Reeves of New Orleans; and great-nephew Sascha Greenamyre. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Susan L. Livengood |1948-2024|

Carl Richard Ghere, 85, died November 14, 2023. He was born in Harper, Kansas on November 19, 1937, to Russel James Ghere and Mary Inez (Neighbors) Ghere.

He graduated from Harper High School in 1955. Carl proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Myer, Virginia where he was a staff car driver. He worked at Eaton Corporation where he retired after almost 40 years.

In 1971, Carl took a leap of faith and went on a blind date that turned into a marriage proposal. He married Judith Ann Doane on February 26, 1972.

He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, his children Tara Ghere and Tyson Ghere (Shalah O’Callaghan); his grandchildren Danielle Ghere (Devon Dodge), Chance Ghere, and Cassidy Ghere; four great-grandchildren Jalen, Liliana, DeAndre, and Joaquin Dodge; one brother Clyde (Sharol) Ghere of Harper, KS, one sister Pauline (Doug) Oliver of Harper, KS, one sister-in-law Marilyn Ghere of Sedgwick, KS, one brother-in-law Jerry (Janet) Doane; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Howard (Donna), Leonard, Raymond, and Floyd Ghere.

Carl’s biggest passion was his family and helping others. His favorite hobbies were motorcycles and horses. He used to race his motorcycle in Marquette, KS before he started his family. He was a member of Sand Hill Saddle Club where he would take his horses Blaze, Star, and Ocho to participate in fun shows. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, growing giant sunflowers with his grandkids, western movies, and reading. He loved entertaining his kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and all their friends with his long-winded tales of whatever he decided to talk about that day that usually surrounded hunting, fishing, being a cowboy, his time in the military, or growing up on the farm in Harper. When you knew Carl long enough, you got to see the ornery side of his personality with practical jokes. He kept his friends and family on their toes because you never knew what he was up to.

At Carl’s request, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Fairview Cemetery in Danville, KS at 11 a.m. A time to meet with the family and celebrate Carl’s life will be immediately following at the Harper United Methodist Church 1268 E. 14th St Harper, KS 67058.

He was born in Harper, Kansas on November 19, 1937, to Russel James Ghere and Mary Inez (Neighbors) Ghere.He graduated from Harper High School in 1955. Carl proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Myer, Virginia where he was a staff car driver. He worked at Eaton Corporation where he retired after almost 40 years.In 1971, Carl took a leap of faith and went on a blind date that turned into a marriage proposal. He married Judith Ann Doane on February 26, 1972.He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, his children Tara Ghere and Tyson Ghere (Shalah O’Callaghan); his grandchildren Danielle Ghere (Devon Dodge), Chance Ghere, and Cassidy Ghere; four great-grandchildren Jalen, Liliana, DeAndre, and Joaquin Dodge; one brother Clyde (Sharol) Ghere of Harper, KS, one sister Pauline (Doug) Oliver of Harper, KS, one sister-in-law Marilyn Ghere of Sedgwick, KS, one brother-in-law Jerry (Janet) Doane; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Howard (Donna), Leonard, Raymond, and Floyd Ghere.Carl’s biggest passion was his family and helping others. His favorite hobbies were motorcycles and horses. He used to race his motorcycle in Marquette, KS before he started his family. He was a member of Sand Hill Saddle Club where he would take his horses Blaze, Star, and Ocho to participate in fun shows. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, growing giant sunflowers with his grandkids, western movies, and reading. He loved entertaining his kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and all their friends with his long-winded tales of whatever he decided to talk about that day that usually surrounded hunting, fishing, being a cowboy, his time in the military, or growing up on the farm in Harper. When you knew Carl long enough, you got to see the ornery side of his personality with practical jokes. He kept his friends and family on their toes because you never knew what he was up to.At Carl’s request, cremation has taken place. Carl Richard Ghere |1937-2023|

Charles R. Summers 77, passed away on April 10, 2024, in Newton, Kansas at Presbyterian Manor. He was born on March 19 1947. He was the son of Jean Humiston and Ray Summers who preceded him in death. He is survived by a stepbrother Curtis Summers and two stepsister being Susan Summers and Vanita Lester. Charlie graduated from high school in Omaha, Nebraska and received a degree from Emporia State University. Charlie was employed by Harvey County dealing with accounts payable.

Charlie had a passion for biking and was a strong rider. He rode his bicycle thousands of miles each year in Kansas and in several other states. In 2002, Charlie came forward to lead Biking Across Kansas after the retirement of Larry and Norma Christie. He served as BAK director until 2011.

Visitation will be Thursday April 18, 2024, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Friday April 19, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Laurie Oswald Robinson was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on July 14, 1959. 

She graduated from Goshen College in 1983, majoring in Communication. A Newton resident, Laurie was a prolific writer, working for several newspapers such as Harvey County Now and Mennonite Weekly Review. She wrote two books: Forever Family, a book that documents her journey with a beloved foster daughter and Now It Springs Up, a devotional book. She was a free-lance writer, specializing in helping families create family books. She had just completed a family book for her own family.

Laurie was active in organizations like Peace Connections, planning a golf tournament and fundraising events. She traveled to South Africa, raising money and writing for Water for Life. She was a beloved teacher and substitute teacher in the Newton community. 

Laurie was married to Al Robinson in 2005. She was active in the Mennonite Church and then became a devout Catholic, where she wrote educational articles, taught classes and served as a cantor. She put 100% into everything she did and was a beloved member of every community she served.

Laurie Oswald Robinson died April 8, in a pedestrian/car accident, as she trained for the Kansas Camino Walk. 

She is survived by her husband Al, sister Jane Lambert (Vaughn), of Salina, KS, brother Neil Oswald (Kathy), of Manson, Iowa, brother Brian Oswald (Patty) of Chicago, IL and her mother-in-law, Beryl, Al's three brothers, Danny (Wendy), Ronny (Jeannie) and Michael (Wendy) and many nieces and nephews. 

She is preceded in death by her father, Paul, and mother, Dorothy, sister Paula and nephew Kevin and her brother-in-law, Reggie (Jane).

Visitation and Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be on April 18, from 5-9 PM with the Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home, with Catholic Mass on Friday, April 19, 10:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Newton. 

Memorial donations can be made out to either Peace Connections or the Altar Society at Our Lady of Guadalupe and left in care of Petersen Family Funeral Home.

Mary Edna Yoder, 93, died April 11, 2024, at her home. &nbsp;She was born August 17, 1930, in LaGrange, IN, to Albert M. Yoder and Saloma (Troyer) Yoder.

Mary was a homemaker. &nbsp;She was a member of Cedar Crest Amish Mennonite Church, Partridge, KS.

On January 20, 1955, Mary married Fred H. Yoder, in Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;They shared over 49 years of marriage, prior to his death on March 24, 2004.

Mary is survived by: &nbsp;her children, Harry F. (Susan) Yoder, Susan Kay (Richard) Yoder, Wayne F. (Michelle) Yoder, Wilbur Lee Yoder, Willard Dee (Gertie) Yoder, Ruth Anne (Keith) Hershberger, Calvin Jay (Rebecca) Yoder, and David Leon (Renita) Yoder; 30 grandchildren; and 58 great-grandchildren.

Linda Ruth Neher, 60, died April 6, 2024, at Sparkling Fountain Homes Senior Care Facility, Overland Park. She was born as Alice Marie Gulling to Gerald and Darlene Gulling on November 15, 1963, in Des Moines, IA. She was adopted by Eldon LaVern and Joanna Marie (Hooge) Boese on April 6, 1965.

Linda earned an Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Hesston College in 1984 and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1986 from Bethel College, Newton. She signed up for Mennonite Voluntary Service after college. The first year, she was a teacher’s aide at Friendship Day Care and the second year, she was an activities aide at Mennonite Friendship Manor, this is where she met her husband, Scott.

Linda enjoyed coloring, cross stitching, singing, playing the piano and accordion, and writing. &nbsp;

On March 25, 1989, she married Scott Edwin Neher, in South Hutchinson. They shared over 32 years of marriage prior to his death on September 18, 2021.

Linda is survived by: her children, Christopher (Savana) Neher, Katelyn (Dustin) Harman both of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Sereniti Harman, Shiloh Neher, Salem Neher; adoptive sister, Helen (Boese) Adams and husband, Brian of CA; biological siblings, Gerald, Jr., Larry, Sherry, Patsy, Helen, Betty, Kathy, Carol, Tim, Loretta, and Jessie Ann; parents-in-law, Doyle and Sharon Neher of Pfeifer; sisters-in-law, Vicki (David) Stoll of OK, Pamela (Marcelo) Hernandez of Branson, MO; brothers-in-law, Steve (Jolene) Neher of Lawrence and Jefferey (Jesica) Neher of Pfeifer.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

John “Lyle” Manning, 89, passed away on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, in Wichita, KS. He was born on August 11th, 1934, in Stockton, MO, to Elias and Inez Manning. Lyle married beloved Goldie Faye (Hamby) Manning on December 13th, 1956, in Bolivar, MO, soon after moving to Ellinwood, KS, where they raised a family and enjoyed nearly 63 years of happy marriage.

 </figure>John “Lyle” Manning, 89, passed away on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, in Wichita, KS. He was born on August 11th, 1934, in Stockton, MO, to Elias and Inez Manning. Lyle married beloved Goldie Faye (Hamby) Manning on December 13th, 1956, in Bolivar, MO, soon after moving to Ellinwood, KS, where they raised a family and enjoyed nearly 63 years of happy marriage.Lyle saw the world as a young man while serving in the US Air Force starting in 1953, including memorable deployments in Greenland and France. After returning stateside, he began a career in the oilfields in 1957, retiring earlier this year after 67 years of service. His career was a great source of enjoyment and pride, and he was known for the relationships he built and the hard work and integrity he demonstrated daily. Many have memories of Lyle telling jokes and visiting with customers at Hi-La and spotting his truck driving slowly along the country roads north of Ellinwood. Most of all, Lyle loved and doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to his face.Survivors include daughter Peggy Manning and son Greg (Arlene) Manning of Ellinwood, brother Norman (Marilyn) Manning of El Dorado Springs, MO. Grandchildren include Alicia Manning, Keith (Sua) Herl, Charlie (Santia) Manning, Brent (Erica) Manning, Shane Herl, Jared (Jessica) Manning, as well as 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Lyle was preceded in death by wife Goldie, parents Elias and Inez Manning, daughter Carla Herl, infant son Curtis Dean Manning, sisters Imogene Hembree, Marjorie Thompson, and infant twin sisters Beaulah and Ester Manning, and brothers Eugene Manning, Lee Manning, Clifford Manning, and Glen Manning.
