Kenneth Edward Knight was born on August 7, 1938, in Lyons, Kansas, to Chester Knight and Martha Mildred Cain. He was raised in Rice County and left his earthly home on May 30, 2021 at the age of 82. 

In 1957, Kenny married JoAnna McCoy and had five children: Kathy, Phil, Judi, John and Mark. Kenny and Tamara married in 1990. Together, they raised her children, Lindsay and Ryan. Kenny attended country school before switching to town schools and graduated from Lyons High with the Class of 1956. He played football while attending Garden City Community College, then farmed for a short while in Scott County before returning to Lyons. 

Kenny was a passionate farmer and cattleman. He, along with his father and brother, Donnie, formed Knight Farms in 1961. In 1972, they expanded their business and built Knight Feedlot. Other business interests included Bar K Bar Trucking and grazing cattle in the Flint Hills. Serving on the board of Innovative Livestock Services was one of Kenny’s most favored ventures of all. Kenny received many awards and recognition in the agricultural world including the Stockman of the Year award by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council at Kansas State University, Lyons Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Award, and Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation Wall of Honor. His most prized accomplishment was to have served as president of the Kansas Livestock Association in 1980. 

Kenny firmly believed in forming business partnerships, especially when they benefited the cattle industry and local community. He had an interest in working with other community members and was instrumental in the development of the Rice County Community Foundation, Celebration Centre and Bar K Bar Arena in Lyons. He also served on a variety of boards and was a founding member of Kansas Ethanol in Rice County. Being a member of the First Christian Church, Rice County Community Foundation, Beef Marketing Group, and Cattlemen’s Beef Board was especially important to him. 

Kenny was a farmer at heart. Harvest meant long hours on the combine, but he loved it and welcomed riders of all ages. If you were one of the lucky ones to ride along, you would become educated on all things agriculture related, and hear stories from the past. One of his messages was that it’s always important to leave things better than you found them. During the winters, Kenny enjoyed woodworking and spent many hours in his wood shop. Every family member possesses at least one of his creations: cradles, time-out benches, potting benches, treasure chests, cutting boards, and furniture of all sizes. 

Christmas was Kenny’s favorite holiday, and he loved making it special for his children and grandchildren. Somehow, Santa always made a guest appearance, much to the delight of all who had gathered. Family Christmas caroling was especially fun, singing on the porches of many rural neighbors. An avid K-State fan, Kenny didn’t miss a home football game for decades. It was a time and place for connecting with family and friends, old and new. One of Kenny’s Saturday traditions was wearing a pair of lucky purple socks, which he is wearing into eternity! 

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bob and David Knight, his wife, JoAnna Knight, a daughter, Judith Knight Hutton, and two sons, Phillip Alan Knight and K. John Knight. He is survived by his wife Tamara, of the home, daughter Kathryn Knight Maxwell (Mark), of Manhattan, son Mark Knight (Sherri) of Lyons, daughter Lindsay Hufnagel (Shad) of Manhattan, son Ryan Boltz (Holly) of Lyons, daughter-in-law Susie Knight Loges of Lyons, and brother Don Knight (RuthAnn) of Marion, Texas. Kenny and Tamara have 17 grandchildren: Kelsey, Sarah, Amanda, Aaron, Alisha, Ericka, Rachel, Taylor, Eddie, Alyse, Chelsi, Luke, Adri, Alle, Hadley, Greysyn, Emry, and 13 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues who became lifetime friends. Kenny was an honest man of faith, led a Christian life, and believed in enjoying life. He loved his family dearly and proudly served his community.

She was born Feb. 24, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia the daughter of Lamar and Bobbie Plumley Chestnut.&nbsp; She was a homemaker.

Beverly was a member of the Church of Christ of Kingman, Kansas.

Gary was born on March 9, 1977, in Modesto, CA, the son of Gary Joseph Williams, Sr. and Sheryl Ann (Clem) Williams.&nbsp;&nbsp;On June 18, 2014, Gary was united in marriage to Patricia Jean Deist in McPherson.

Mereko Barker, 92, of Hutchinson, passed away May 30, 2021, at her home. She was born January 10, 1929, in Tokyo, Japan, to Dinbae and Eku Horiguchi.

Mereko graduated from high school in Tokyo in 1947. Following high school, she worked as a clerk at Camp Zama, Yokohama, Japan, a U.S. Army Base which was a logistics and staging area for troops on their way to fight in Korea. There she met Sgt. Fred Allen Barker, who was recovering from wounds sustained in battle. They were married on August 5, 1954, at the base.

Mereko and Fred settled in the Hutchinson area, where Mereko worked for a time at Wesley Towers, as a Matron at the Reno County Jail, and then at Lowen Corporation, where she made signs for over 20 years. She attended Walnut and Campbell Church of Christ.

Mereko was completely dedicated to her family and loved to cook. She also loved country music, old westerns, nature, and especially German Shepherd dogs.

Mereko is survived by: her children, Terry Barker (Penny) of Hutchinson, Dian Barker (Ralph Ganeles) of Littleton, CO; grandchildren, Kali and Madyson Ganeles, Ian Mosher (Jihye), Shylah Boyle (Jeff); 5 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Fred, who died November 30, 2001; daughter, Marilyn; and beloved pets, Bo and Cheetah.

Brenda Kaye Hosler, 76, of Hutchinson, died May 29, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born April 7, 1945, in Hugoton, to Glenn and Dorothy (McGehee) Brown.

Brenda loved to craft and did many different types of crafts, including knitting and quilting. She often gave away the things she made to friends and family. Brenda also collected elephants and loved motorcycles.

In April 1975, she married Frances “Bud” Hosler in Hutchinson. He passed away in 1986.

Brenda is survived by: sisters, Melba Brown and Glenda Hahn, both of Hutchinson; and nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Shelly, Jeffrey, and Angela.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Bud Hosler; and sister, Betty.

Per Brenda’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time.

Kenneth Ray Dickson, 69, of Galva, Kansas, passed away Monday, May 31, 2021 at Ascension via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.&nbsp; He was born January 4, 1952 in Minneapolis, Kansas, the son of Ollie and Helen (Philips) Dickson.

He grew up in the Minneapolis and Salina area and graduated from Salina High School with the class of 1970.&nbsp; He has lived in the Galva/Moundridge area since the late 1980’s.

Kenneth was united in marriage to Diane Doan on July 1, 1991 in Moundridge, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Kenneth was a machinist and worked maintenance at Plains Plastics and Chemstar of McPherson.&nbsp; He was previously employed at Kansas Jack in McPherson and Agco Corporation in Hesston, retiring in 2017.

He enjoyed fishing and automobile racing.

Kenneth is also survived by his daughters, Karen Dickson of Moundridge and Mary Dickson of Galva; stepson, Robert Langfitt of McPherson; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; brothers, Ollie “Dick” (Linda) Dickson, Russell “Rusty” (Mary) Dickson, and Charlie (Jo) Dickson, all of Salina; and sister, Kay (Chris) Christiancy of Salina.

Carolyn Jean (Neufeld) Buhler, 71, passed away Saturday May 29, 2021 at Mennonite Friendship Community in South Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She was born July 5, 1949 in McPherson, KS.

On December 19, 1969 Carolyn married James Buhler and lived in Canada where their children were born, until 1984 when she moved back to Inman, KS with the children. &nbsp;

Carolyn loved the Lord and served Him in various ways.&nbsp; She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and spent most of her life working with children.&nbsp; Before she retired, she changed careers and worked at the nursing home doing what she loved most, making crafts and singing with the residents.&nbsp; She loved her family and always looked for opportunities to send gifts for special occasions or make birthday cakes for the grandchildren.&nbsp;

Carolyn is survived by her son Tim Buhler (Nicolle) and their children, Jordyn, Holly, Caleb, Nathaniel and Benjamin; daughter Tammy Galloway (Scott) and their children, Joshua, Levi, Bella, Christian, Joseph, Evie and Ruthie; and son/nephew Jason Herren (Lacey) and their son, Cody; 2 sisters, Betty Hamm and Faye Grounds and brother Leland Neufeld (Jolene), niece Christin Grounds, and nephew Christopher Grounds (Sherinda) and their 3 children.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Amanda (Kroeker) Neufeld, of Inman, KS, and ex-husband, James Richard Buhler of Kelowna, BC, Canada.&nbsp;

Carolyn Jean (Neufeld) Buhler, 71, passed away Saturday May 29, 2021 at Mennonite Friendship Community in South Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She was born July 5, 1949 in McPherson, KS.On December 19, 1969 Carolyn married James Buhler and lived in Canada where their children were born, until 1984 when she moved back to Inman, KS with the children. &nbsp;Carolyn loved the Lord and served Him in various ways.&nbsp; She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and spent most of her life working with children.&nbsp; Before she retired, she changed careers and worked at the nursing home doing what she loved most, making crafts and singing with the residents.&nbsp; She loved her family and always looked for opportunities to send gifts for special occasions or make birthday cakes for the grandchildren.&nbsp;Carolyn is survived by her son Tim Buhler (Nicolle) and their children, Jordyn, Holly, Caleb, Nathaniel and Benjamin; daughter Tammy Galloway (Scott) and their children, Joshua, Levi, Bella, Christian, Joseph, Evie and Ruthie; and son/nephew Jason Herren (Lacey) and their son, Cody; 2 sisters, Betty Hamm and Faye Grounds and brother Leland Neufeld (Jolene), niece Christin Grounds, and nephew Christopher Grounds (Sherinda) and their 3 children.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Amanda (Kroeker) Neufeld, of Inman, KS, and ex-husband, James Richard Buhler of Kelowna, BC, Canada.&nbsp;Cremation is planned. Larry Dee Becker, 86, of Canton, KS, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 30, 2021, surrounded by family at Riverview Estates, Marquette.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a farmer and dairyman.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also worked in maintenance at Central Plastics and in the oil fields as a driller and roughneck.&nbsp;

Larry was born on January 16, 1935, in McPherson, KS, the son of Kermit P. and Sophia C. (Unruh) Becker.&nbsp;&nbsp;On October 6, 1957, Larry was united in marriage to Goldie Marie Clarkson in Larned, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;She preceded him in death on January 9, 2013.&nbsp;

He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of the Canton American Legion and McPherson V.F.W.&nbsp;&nbsp;He attended Countryside Covenant Church, McPherson.

Survivors include: four children, Reba Becker (Duane) of Lindsborg, KS, Stephanie Becker (Eric Peterson) of Olathe, KS, Justin Becker of Canton, KS, and Denise Taylor (Mike) of Canton, KS; siblings, Marion Becker (Carolyn) of Montezuma, KS, Gordon Becker (Carolyn) of Kirksey, KY, and Dale Becker (Joyce) of Siloam Springs, AR; a granddaughter, Monica Diederich; two step-grandchildren, Brandon Taylor and Holly Leiker; five great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

Joann Ilene Danley, 90, went to be with the Lord May 30, 2021 at Pratt Health and Rehab Center.

She was born January 13, 1931 in Pratt to William Everett and Hallie Pearl (Alexander) Baker.

Joann married Stanley D. Petrie, May 12, 1951. They were married for 27 years.

She married Lawrence A. Danley May 18, 1985 in Pratt, Kansas. Lawrence passed away April 26, 1991.

Joann graduated Pratt High School in 1949. She worked for the Clerk of the District Court of Pratt County.

Her faith in God was always an important part of her life and she was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Church, where she taught children's Sunday School and played the piano for worship services. Joann had a heart for volunteer service and was a member of PRMC Hospital Auxiliary, helped with the Pratt County Fair through Cairo EHU and was a lifetime member of Glendale Mother's Club. She was a founding member and the first president of the South Central Special Education Cooperative, which worked to bring special education into public schools. Gardening and raising flowers was something she enjoyed, along with playing cards, especially pitch.

She is survived by Daughter, Patricia (Roger) Shippy of Pratt, KS; Sons, David Petrie of Pratt, Daniel (Mary) Petrie of Garden City, KS, Brother, Garry Baker of Stafford, KS; Sister, Darlene Mayberry of Weatherford, TX; Two Step Sons, Keith (Laticia) Danley of AZ, Tim (Laurel) Danley of Rapid City, SD; and Step Daughter, Pricilla Danley; .

She was blessed with 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a soon to arrive great, great grandson, 9 step grandchildren, 11 step great grandchildren.

Joann is preceded in death by her two Husbands, Stanley D. Petrie and Lawrence A. Danley; her Father, William Everett Baker; Mother, Hallie Pearl Baker; a son Raymond Petrie and brothers Everett and Clyde Baker.

Dwayne’s life began on December 6, 1927, in Herington.  He was the son of Charles and Edith (Schuster) Stroda.  Dwayne is a 1946 graduate of Herington High School.  He was united in marriage to Delores M. Bezdek on May 1, 1954, in Marion.  Dwayne was a lifelong farmer and rancher in rural Herington.  He was a parishioner of St. John’s Catholic Church in Herington and a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Dwayne was a member of the Farm Bureau and the US Custom Harvesters Association.  He loved spending time with his friends over coffee at the coffee shop and enjoyed creating metalworks.  Dwayne was a people person, he never knew a stranger and genuinely loved people.  He enjoyed card club and supper club and loved to travel. Dwayne and Delores traveled to Hawaii on an anniversary trip, and to nearly all 50 states. He and Delores also enjoyed bus trips to the casino with friends.  He enjoyed his family and family reunions.  

Dwayne’s loving family includes his children Darrell (Laurie) Stroda of Pratt, Chuck (Kim) Stroda of Abbottstown, PA, Pat (Kathryn) Carpenter of Oceanside, CA and Mary (Gordon) Schroeder of Herington, and son in law Bill Suenram of Salina; his grandchildren Hayley ( Tony) Ferris, Nick Suenram, Ben Suenram, Sadie Suenram, Gordon M. (Mary) Schroeder, Jason (Lisa) Schroeder, Erik Schroeder, Matt Stroda, Lindsay (Tom) Schuurman, and Josh Carpenter; 20 great-grandchildren and his siblings Ralph Stroda, Oraina Schump, LaVada Holub, sister in law Rosemary Stroda and several nieces and nephews. He graduated from Pratt High School Class of 1977, graduated from Pratt Community College and received his BSN in Nursing from St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas, and was working at Ascension Providence Hospital, Waco, Texas, in the Cath Lab, working with the heart was his passion, he was very caring and compassionate to all. He was a member of Trinity Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He enjoyed deer hunting, water skiing and camping at the lake. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Nancy Phillips; sister, Ronda Schauf of Hot Springs, Arkansas; daughter, Rachel of Benton, Arkansas; son, Tyler of Thailand; aunt and uncle, Marvin and Karla Ewing of Hutchinson; Aunt, Martha Phillips of Wichita; cousins; nieces and nephews. George Allan Smith, 66, of Salina, Kansas, passed away May 14, 2021 at his home. He was born August 15, 1954 in Little River, Kansas, the son of Charles Raymond “Ray” and Clara Sidebottom Smith. George graduated from Little River High School. 

George has resided in Salina for the past 40 years; formerly of Little River. He was a custodian for Salina Regional Medical Center for many years. George was a member of the Church of the Latter-day Saints of Salina. He enjoyed doing handyman work. 

He is survived by his brother, Harold Smith of Hutchinson, sisters, Barbara Koch of Lyons, and Linda Alber of Claflin, KS; and his dog, Bossy. George is preceded in death by parents; brother, Richard Smith and sister, Carolyn Sue Smith. 

A graveside service will be at Friday, June 4, 2021 at Bean Memorial Cemetery, Little River with Rev. Robert Friesen officiating. Memorials may be given to the Salina Humane Society in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

George Allan Smith, 66, of Salina, Kansas, passed away May 14, 2021 at his home. He was born August 15, 1954 in Little River, Kansas, the son of Charles Raymond “Ray” and Clara Sidebottom Smith. George graduated from Little River High School. George has resided in Salina for the past 40 years; formerly of Little River. He was a custodian for Salina Regional Medical Center for many years. George was a member of the Church of the Latter-day Saints of Salina. He enjoyed doing handyman work. He is survived by his brother, Harold Smith of Hutchinson, sisters, Barbara Koch of Lyons, and Linda Alber of Claflin, KS; and his dog, Bossy. George is preceded in death by parents; brother, Richard Smith and sister, Carolyn Sue Smith. A graveside service will be at Friday, June 4, 2021 at Bean Memorial Cemetery, Little River with Rev. Ralph Wilson, of Sterling, passed away on May 29, 2021 at Rice County District Hospital at the age of 82. His final days were blessed with the comforting presence of family and many friends. 

Ralph was born July 10, 1938 in Osawatomie, Kansas to Robert and Georgia (Stanton) Wilson. He spent his youth in Osawatomie, and remained devoted throughout his life to his beloved Osawatomie High School Class of 1956. He went on to study at the University of Kansas and Baker University, and to graduate from Pittsburg State College. Ralph married Diane Dollar on August 27, 1960 in Osawatomie. Ralph and Diane went on to spend nearly 61 years as best friends and companions. Their children and grandchildren cherish the example of marriage and devotion that they provided. After a period as a high school teacher in Missouri, in 1964 Ralph and Diane moved to Sterling, where Ralph took up a position with the Farmers State insurance agency, and subsequently with the Farmers State Bank (now First Bank). In his long career at the bank, Ralph touched the lives of countless farmers, ranchers, business owners, and families in Sterling and Rice County through his compassionate and personal approach to banking. During his working years, Ralph served on the USD 376 school board and was instrumental in the 1970’s effort to ensure that Sterling benefited from a full-fledged medical practice. He was also a long-time member of Sterling’s Rotary International chapter. He was a dedicated and much-loved member of the Sterling United Presbyterian Church and was especially grateful to Rev. Melissa Krabbe for her pastoral care, particularly during his final illness. In retirement, Ralph was an enthusiastic (verging on fanatical) follower of the sports programs at Sterling High School and Sterling College, as well as the many athletic, musical, and artistic pursuits of his grandkids. 

Ralph’s family will remember him as a man of deep integrity and personal decency. He leaves behind his wife, Diane; sons Christopher (husband Mark), Jack, and David (wife Kristi); three deeply loved grandchildren Kaci (fiancé Nate), Bryce and Karissa Wilson; brother Donald Wilson and sister Linda Lockey; and multitudes of friends. The family is grateful to Dr. Stacy Dashiell and the dozens of medical professionals in Sterling, Lyons and Wichita who cared for Ralph during his illness, and to friends and neighbors for the many gestures of support in recent weeks. 

Private family services will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. Public visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with family present 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Joyce Isola Fuller, age 90, born January 30, 1931, to Ted Rose and Lena Warfield Rose of Ingalls, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at her home in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was surrounded by her loving partner of the last six years, Daryl Borg, and her family.&nbsp; She was faithfully cared for during the Pandemic year by Daryl.&nbsp; Her daughter, Debra and husband, Robert, shared in her care in Kansas during the last months of her life. Joyce grew up in Arlington, Kansas, where she met and married Deryl D. Fuller, M.D. in 1949.&nbsp; They lived in Vista, California for one year during his residency, then moved to Marquette, Kansas, later, to Lindsborg, Kansas until his retirement when they moved to Cedaredge, Colorado.&nbsp; After “Doc’s” death, Joyce enjoyed life with her childhood sweetheart, Keith Stull, for about a decade.&nbsp; They returned to Kansas prior to his death.&nbsp; She lived and traveled with her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Robert, until she and Daryl Borg united. &nbsp;When she and Daryl began their life together six years ago they enjoyed travel, but also delighted in just being together.&nbsp; Daryl remained steadfastly at her side, faithfully caring for her throughout illness and declining health.&nbsp; The family is deeply grateful. Joyce was a gentle soul who loved poetry, literature, history, and art.&nbsp; She was a kind and attentive listener, non-judgmental, open, accepting, and appreciative of the uniqueness of individuals.&nbsp; Independent of mind, she did not insist that others bend to her way of thinking, but rather exuded the quiet integrity of a peacemaker.&nbsp; She deeply valued kindness, honesty, wisdom, and charity toward others.&nbsp; She raised three daughters. She had a lifelong passion for flight, attaining her pilot’s license in her 30’s.&nbsp; At 90 she enthusiastically described the thrill of “lift off” with the unabashed joy of a young pilot. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Wayne and Don Rose, her sister, Belva Mills, as well as her half-brother, Bud Rose.&nbsp; She is survived by her half-brother, Howard Rose, and two half-sisters, Pat Watermiller and Sharon Goble. She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Aaron Ezekiel), Albuquerque, N.M., Debra (Dr. Robert Hayles) Manzanita, OR, and Lesa (Rick Beattie) Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; Her grandchildren, Matthew Dahlsten, Geneva and Savanah Fuller Ezekiel, Dr. Andrew W. He was born July 4, 1961, in Belleville, KS, the son of Lewis Earl and Bonnie June (Hancock) Schuster.&nbsp;&nbsp;Arden was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked in the construction business.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Schuster and a sister, Sylvia Neave.

Esther Pearl (Lehrman) Rinner was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Aberdeen, Idaho, the daughter of Henry H. and Theresa (Wiebe) Lehrman, and died on May 30, 2020 in North Newton, Kansas.

She was baptized and became a member of the First Mennonite Church of Aberdeen, and enjoyed being a member of the Girl Scouts. She attended Bethel College and was granted a teaching certificate there in 1942. 

She then taught at the one-room Candy School east of Newton for one year and then for two years in the elementary school in American Falls, Idaho.

She returned to Bethel College where she received her B.S. degree In Education in 1947, graduating with Distinction.

During two summers in a women’s service unit and then for one year in the 1940s, she was an attendant in a state mental hospital in Ypsilanti, Michigan. This was followed by a year and a half of voluntary service in LaPlata, Puerto Rico under Mennonite Central Committee, working with children in a community center.

On June 30, 1949 Esther was married in the First Mennonite Church of Aberdeen, Idaho to Andrew James (Jim) Rinner of Wayland, Iowa, a Civilian Public Service worker she had met while serving in Ypsilanti. Throughout their married life, his career as a nursing student and then nursing instructor took them to homes in Chicago, North Newton, Hutchinson, Denver, and since 1960 in Newton, Kansas. The couple’s two daughters, Jeanette and Amy, were born during the family’s years in Hutchinson. Jim and Esther spent their last years at the Kidron Bethel Retirement Center in North Newton. Her husband died on April 27, 2004 after almost 55 years of marriage.

Esther was always active in church work, community, and education. She was a substitute teacher In Hutchinson and was employed as secretary for the Mennonite Western District Conference office and the development office at Bethel College in North Newton. Most of her working years were as secretary and administrative assistant for the executive secretary of the General Conference Mennonite Commission on Home Ministries in the Newton, Kansas headquarters.

She was a volunteer in many places, including Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher and director, congregational and church council secretary in Bethel College Mennonite Church; teacher in Newton’s Released Time Bible School; docent at Warkentin House; treasurer for Newton Church Women United; member of a Harvey County Extension Homemakers Unit; PTA president at Washington School; 4-H Club leader; Bethel Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary; volunteer at Newton Medical Center gift shop and at the Mennonite Library and Archives at Bethel College.

Esther had a great love of travel, beginning in her childhood when her family drove from Idaho in a Model T Ford to visit relatives in Kansas in the 1930s. In her married life, the family traveled to many places, including across the Western United States and several times to Europe. She and Jim also traveled to the Soviet Union, Israel and Canada. She loved classical music, doing handwork and making scrapbooks.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Ruby Lehrman and Elva Brucks, brother Charles Lehrman, and son-in-law Steve Grantstein. She is survived by sister-in-law Lois Lehrman of Buhl, Idaho; daughters Jeanette Grantstein of Wichita and Amy (Rinner, Dueckman) Waddell (Marc) of Abbotsford, British Columbia; grandchildren Abigail Grantstein Howard (Lucas), James David Dueckman (Pauline), Noel Dueckman (Stephanie),Laura Dueckman Merritt (Ryan), and great-grandchildren Evangeline Grantstein, Bonnie Grantstein, Caroline Howard and Zachary Dueckman and nine beloved nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be designated for Bethel College Rinner Nursing Scholarship Fund, Bethel College Mennonite Church, or Western District Mennonite Conference In Care of Petersen Funeral Home.

Dolores P. Rioz, 91, died May 27th, 2021 at her home surrounded by family.

She was born September 15th, 1929, the daughter of Ignacio and Maria (DeNari) Martinez.

Dolores was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother; she was all around great.

She is survived by her daughters, Antonia Espinoza and respected children and grandchildren and Anna Sanchez and respected children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; brothers, Albert Martinez and Benny Martinez; and sister, Molly Martinez.

Visitation will be from 1:00pm – 5:00pm on Monday, May 31st at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Rosary will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 1st, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 421 S. Ash St., in Newton, Kansas. Jeffrey (Jeff) Mark Allen, 65, died on November 19, 2020 of Covid-19 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; He was born March 22, 1955 in Hutchinson, KS to Robert and June (Bentley) Allen.

In 1980, he married Cynthia (Chi-Chi) Coe in Wichita KS. They celebrated their 40th anniversary in April.&nbsp;

Jeff graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1973 as salutatorian. He was an Eagle Scout, a Boys Stater, and a longtime Boys State counselor. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and was chapter president of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity.

Jeff practiced pharmacy in KC for several years before returning home to Hutchinson to join the family business, Hutchinson Vending Company, which also operated Countryside Lanes and Riverside Lanes.

In 2010, Jeff returned to pharmacy practice after a 29-year hiatus.&nbsp; A pharmacist at Walmart, first in Pratt and then in Hutchinson, he was known for his compassion, sweet smile, and seemingly endless questions. As an essential worker during the pandemic, he was dedicated to serving his patients and working with his pharmacy family.

Jeff was community-minded and driven by a commitment to Hutchinson. He was past-President of the Hutchinson Rotary Club and the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, and was proud to be named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a former board member of Interfaith Housing Services, and currently served on the Dillon Credit Union board of directors. Jeff was elected to four terms on the USD 308 Board of Education, serving as president several times.&nbsp; During his 16-year tenure, the BOE opened the Salthawk Activity Center, restructured the middle schools, and renovated Gowans Stadium.

In his youth, Jeff was a founding member of the “Inner-Psychic Chroma” (later known as “Bayberry Candle Company”) band, and later in life, was the namesake of “Jeff &amp; The Jackals” karaoke group! Jeff loved watching KU basketball games (especially in Allen Fieldhouse), following the Chiefs and Royals, going to concerts, and traveling around the country with Chi-Chi. As much as he adored his children, Rachel and Daniel, the biggest&nbsp; joy of his life was being a grandpa.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Chi-Chi of Hutchinson; daughter, Rachel (Jeff) Stone of Olathe, KS; son, Danny (Christine) Allen of Denver, CO; grandchildren Charlotte and William Stone of Olathe; brother David (Jeanne) Allen of Wichita; sister Diane (Randy) Hudson of Sherman, TX; brother-in-law, Nathan (Judy) Coe of Woodinville, WA; sister-in-law, Gretchen Allen of Hutchinson, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Max Coe II.&nbsp;

Brad and Nancy Steele died November 19, 2020, and November 20, 2020, respectfully, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center from COVID-19.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brad, 81, was born August 26, 1939, in Hutchinson, to Gilbert and Luella ‘Lu’ (Thorp) Steele.&nbsp; He graduated from Hutchinson High School, and received his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in 1962, after receiving a baseball scholarship.&nbsp; Brad retired from Buhler Unified School District 313 after 40+ years of teaching and coaching.&nbsp; He taught physical education to grade school and middle school students, in addition to coaching basketball and track. Brad was loved and highly respected by all of his students, athletes, and colleagues, and made a tremendous impact on their lives.&nbsp; He enjoyed playing golf and softball when younger.&nbsp; Brad’s passion was watching all sports year round, especially basketball and football. &nbsp;He LOVED his K-State Wildcats.

Nancy, 73, was born December 5, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Marty and Lois Shuman.&nbsp; She impacted hundreds and hundreds of children by running a home daycare and working at Sunflower Daycare for 50 years. While her own children were attending high school, she took a break from childcare to work downtown at Anthony’s Clothing Store. &nbsp; She was still caring for children until she became ill.&nbsp; Family, grandchildren, and her daycare children were what Nancy cherished.&nbsp;

Nancy and Brad&nbsp;welcomed each daycare child into their lives as if they were a part of their family. &nbsp;They became&nbsp;bonus grandparents to many daycare children, and were&nbsp;affectionately called ‘Nana’ and ‘Papa’, and were considered bonus parents to many as well.&nbsp;

On December 21, 1963, Bradley Kent Steele and Nancy Kay Shuman were married in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared almost 57 years of marriage.&nbsp;

Brad and Nancy are survived by:&nbsp; children, Chad Steele (Annette) of Hutchinson, Julee Vigil (Tim) of Colorado; grandchildren, Stephanie Vigil, Bradley Vigil, Danielle Steele, and Alexis Steele; and three great-grandchildren.&nbsp; In addition, Brad is survived by his three siblings, Stuart Steele (Julie), Marcy Schmidler (Curt), and Marc Steele (Lynda).&nbsp; Nancy is survived by three sisters, Pat Kerns, Barbara Welch and Phyllis Fowler. Both have dozens of nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brad and Nancy were preceded in death by:&nbsp; their parents; grandson, Nathaniel Steele; and three brothers-in-law, Bob Kerns, Ray Welch and Al Fowler.&nbsp;

Alvin Lloyd Fry, 92, died May 26, 2021, at granddaughter’s home in Goddard. He was born March 6, 1929, at Haven, to Chris and Melinda (Borntrager) Fry.

Alvin grew up Amish and completed 7th&nbsp;grade at Yoder. He was an Electrolux Corp. sales representative.

Alvin was a loving and devoted Baptist, and was a longtime member and deacon of Temple Baptist Church, Hutchinson.

On August 10, 1946, he married Norma Lee Cunningham. They shared over 68 years of marriage, prior to her death on November 12, 2014.

Alvin is survived by: son, Randall Fry of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Elizabeth Buchanan of Goddard and Ryan Fry of Lawrence; great-grandchildren, Ethan Fry of Nebraska, Kellan Fry of Hutchinson, Skyler Rupp, Devin and Timbria McKendrick, and Kalen Jones, all of Wichita.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Fay Fry; and two sisters, Mary Chapain and La Fern Wright.
