Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Ellen (Crotts) Kee, 86, passed away July 12, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born February 10, 1935, at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson, to Russell Lawrence and Elizabeth (Burke) Crotts.

Betty worked various office positions for 20 years and retired from Civil Service, after working 25 years for the United States Department of Air Force and United States Department of Agriculture.&nbsp; She was a longtime resident of Hutchinson, member of the Partridge Community Church, Partridge, and attended New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson.

On November 18, 1956, Betty married Eanos Earl Kee.&nbsp; They shared over 57 years of marriage, prior to his death in 2013.

She is survived by:&nbsp; sister, Malinda Hovious; stepsons, Edwin (Diane) Kee of Cumming, GA, and Michael (Kathy) Kee of Florida; step-grandsons, Chad (Hillary) and Michael, Jr; step-granddaughter, Cassandra; and step-great-granddaughters, Isabella and Olivia.

Betty was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husband; and three brothers.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2021, at the Partridge Cemetery, Partridge, with Rev. Craig Waetke officiating.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Evelyn Emma Ogle, 87, of Hutchinson, died July 9, 2021, at her home. She was born December 28, 1933, on the family farm near Basil, to C.P. and Anna (Albrecht) Loewen.

Evelyn graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1951. She worked as a sales clerk at JC Penney for a short while before pausing her work career to raise her family. Evelyn then worked at 1st Church of God as secretary for many years, where she attended, led, and served from age 4-80. The heritage of this church was important to her and she served many years with children, youth, choir, administrative and women’s ministries. Evelyn loved singing in various quartets with her husband. In later years they attended Union Valley Bible Church, where she loved others and was loved in return.

Evelyn was an artist, a mother, a mentor, a wonderful alto, an organizer, an advocate, a mom, a sweetheart, and will always be a daughter of the Most High God.

On October 10, 1952, she married Ronald Edwin Ogle at 1st Church of God, Hutchinson. They shared 70 years of marriage. He survives.

Jennifer Walton, 50, of Hutchinson, died July 8, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born September 27, 1970, in Louisville, KY, to Melvin J. and Mary K. (Buehler) Walton.

Jennifer graduated from Buhler High School in 1991. She loved Jesus, her family, and animals. Jennifer was very active in TECH’s Adult Life Skills program, where she was a prolific painter and participated in Faces of Faith, a mime group. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.

As an adult, Jennifer worked at the Ramada, Golden Plains Nursing Home, and Pizza Ranch.

Jennifer is survived by: her parents, Melvin and Mary Walton; siblings, Eric and Elizabeth Walton, Amy and Matt Bretz; nephews, Marshall and Harrison Walton; nieces, Lauren and Hannah Bretz, all of Hutchinson; and numerous extended family members.

Jennifer Walton |1970-2021|

Willis’ life began on February 11, 1941, in the Hillsboro Hospital.  He was the son of Curtis R. and Winifred (Nansen) Peterson.  Willis was in the first graduating class of Centre High School (1959). He played football and was in the band.  He continued his education at Kansas State University where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity (Alpha Iota Chapter) and Army ROTC. Willis graduated in 1964 with a degree in Milling Technology.  Willis operated the Cargill Mill in Wichita for 15 plus years and previously, he worked in the oil fields.  Farming his land was his true calling and during his working life he commuted 80 miles each way nearly every day to be able to live on his farm. After retiring in 2004 from Cargill Mill he continued to farm in Morris and Marion County. He was a member Hebron Lutheran Church in Burdick and also attended Aulne Church. Willis enjoyed collecting agricultural antiques.  He was united in marriage to the former Karyn “Sue” Glenn on July 3, 2004, at Marion County Lake.  

His loving family includes his wife Sue of Marion, children Daine (Kat) Peterson of Hillsboro, Curtis (Marcy) Peterson of Holcomb, and Troy (Chris) Peterson of Lincolnville; grandchildren Amanda, Dakota, Cheyenne, Avery, Ty, Jon, Sydnee, Jakob, Nick, Emilee, Tucker, Michael, Sabrina, Brandon, Taylor, Hannah and Grace; several great grandchildren; his twin brother Warren Peterson of Sedona, AZ and niece and nephew Sam and Katie. Willis will also be missed by his beloved fur babies Zoey, Suzy and Pia.  Willis was preceded in death by his beloved infant son, David Joel and his faithful dog Bobby.  

His family will gather with friends for his memorial service on Saturday July 17th at 10 a.m. in the Marion County Lake Shelter House on the East Side of the lake. Willis Irwin Peterson |1941-2021|

Wanda Louise (Herzet) Carr passed away on Thursday July 8, 2021 at the age of 97. She was born on October 18, 1923 in rural Marion County.  Wanda was the daughter of Fred A. and Dixie Louise (Fox) Herzet. She grew up on a farm with her 4 brothers and 2 sisters. She attended a country school and graduated from Marion High School in 1940. As a teenager, Wanda worked at the Elgin Hotel in the housekeeping department.

August 3, 1940, Wanda was united in marriage to Max E. Carr.  She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  Wanda enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting, embroidery and sewing. In her later years she enjoyed painting, reading, keeping track of her family on Facebook with her tablet and working jigsaw puzzles. Taking care of her family was her greatest joy.  Wanda was a member of Eastmoor United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Sew Much Love sewing club, and adult Sunday school classes. She assisted with prom, funeral, and other various church dinners.  She loved serving in the kitchen and was always asked to “make her gravy” for the dinners.

Wanda and her husband’s greatest joy was their family which includes sons: William A. (Rosalie) of Jetmore, Thomas E. (Marsha) of Wichita, Max E. (Donna) of Andover, James R. Linda Louise (Ayers) Foster, 65, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021 after a long battle of COPD and lung cancer. 

Linda was born on September 27, 1955 to William Carson and Thelma Rose  Ayres in Arkansas. As a child, she excelled in many sports, especially basketball. After graduating from Hill City, Kansas High School in 1973 she was awarded a basketball scholarship to Colby Community College. She was an excellent cook and pursued that as her lifetime career. She took several classes and became a certified baker. Linda was known to make the best homemade cinnamon rolls around. Linda served as a baker and cook at school and at McPherson Hospital where she retired 18 months ago. Linda loved to bake her famous cinnamon rolls, to play bingo, thoroughly enjoyed scratching lottery tickets for winners, enjoyed being with people, and being at her children and grandchildren’s sporting events which she seldom missed. She was also a big KU fan. Her kindness to others will always be remembered. 

She is preceded in death by her father; three sisters, Lucille, Shirley, Brenda; and four brothers, Larry, Jerry, Alvin, and Kenny Ayers. She is survived by her mother, Thelma Ayers; brother and his wife, Kim and Lana Ayers; four sons, Brian Billinger of Newton, Bradley Billinger of Canton, Kansas, Brent Billinger of Canton, Kansas, Christopher Billinger of Herington, Kansas; two daughters, Brandy Gutierrez of Great Bend, Kansas and Krystal Billinger of McPherson, Kansas; 11 grandchildren. 

Linda’s wishes were to not have a funeral service, but to have a life celebration memorial service which will be announced at a later time. Wichita - David M. Smith, 83, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021 in Wichita. He was born on August 18, 1937 in Pratt to Frank G. and Helen M. (Goyen) Smith. David graduated from Pratt High School in 1955. He was a member of Chapel Hill Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, he was a jack of all trades and master of several, he could fix anything but you "might" have extra parts left over and could tell you the weather for anywhere.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Catherine (Pete) Garrison of Wichita, Andrew Smith of Pratt, Daniel (Kathryn) Smith of Columbia, Missouri, George (Tracy) Keene of Wichita, Traci (Andy) Atzenweiler-Barney of Olathe, Mark (Susan) Keene of Wichita and Todd (Angie) Keene of Springfield, Missouri; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many animals that he loved.

Vicki A. Giddings, 73, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 8, 2021, surrounded by her family at Brookdale-McPherson. She was a Registered Nurse and worked for the McPherson Hospital and in the offices of Dr. C.C. Cunnick and Dr. William Collier.

Vicki was born on January 27, 1948, in Beloit, KS, the daughter of William “Bill” H. and Colleen J. (Coover) Hollaway. On June 8, 1969, Vicki was united in marriage to Bradley K. Giddings. This union was blessed with three children, Derric, Brandon, and Kamie. Brad preceded Vicki in death on February 29, 2016.

Survivors include: two sons, Derric Giddings of Lebanon, OR and Brandon Giddings (Cari) of McPherson, KS; a daughter, Kamie Ward (Brad) of McPherson, KS; two siblings, Van Hollaway (Christie) of Nashville, TN and Frank Hollaway (Brenda) of Beloit, KS; and eight grandchildren, Sierra &amp; Alex Giddings, Caleb, Halle, &amp; Holli Giddings, and Macyn, Ryker, &amp; Colby Ward.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Vince Hollaway.

Ferril Lee Heling, 92, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, July 7th, 2021 while in the company of family members, at Veterans Administration Medical Center Wichita.

Ferril was born in Dodge City, Kansas on October 1, 1928, a son of Waunetta I. (Jenkins) and Forrest F. Heling.

Ferril attended the Pratt grade schools and graduated from Pratt High School, Pratt, Kansas.

He was a member of First Christian Church Pratt, KS.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a SSG in WW II. and then also served in the U.S. Air Force as a SSG in the Korean War.

Ferril Lee Heling was united in marriage to Dixie Lou Davies on September 11,1973 at Pratt, Kansas. Dixie died on March 7, 1995.

Ferril began working for Rock Island Railroad in 1945 as a fireman. He retired in 1987 as Locomotive Engineer for Southern Pacific.

Ferril was a member of Masonic Lodge #72, McPherson; Salina Scottish Rite; IsIs Temple Shrine, Salina; American Legion Post 24, and Elk's Lodge B.P.O.E. #502, both of McPherson. Ferril enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing, golfing, flying his planes, water and snow skiing, and his 5 o'clock tottie.

Ferril is survived by his daughters, Debra Johnson, of Pratt, Kansas and Janet Heling, of Pratt, Kansas; his four grandchildren, Kimberly Seidel, Temple Briscoe, Amber Sprague, and Todd Startzman; his 10 great-grandchildren, Brittany Rector, Gunner DeClue, Bailey DeClue, Riley Howe, Shawna Baker, Brandi Briscoe, Kami Mortenson, Kelsi Constable, Jordan Sprague, and Cameron Startzman; his four great-great-grandchildren, Charlee Rector, James Baker, Allison Baker, and Jason Colon-Vega; other relatives and a host of friends.

She was born August 21, 1925, in Stafford County, to Earl J. and Mildred (Fuson) Richardson.&nbsp; As a young girl, Dean lived and attended schools in Stafford County.

On June 9, 1943, Dean married Jack L. Hamilton in Hutchinson. &nbsp;They shared over 55 years of marriage before his death on May 17, 1999.&nbsp; Dean and Jack lived 56 years in Reno County on the “2H Ranch”. Dean was bookkeeper for the ranch, a farm wife, and volunteered wherever she was needed.&nbsp; She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Church of the Nazarene, Sylvia.

Earl Polk, 76, died suddenly Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at the Farmer’s Market.  He was born May 6, 1945, in Hutchinson, to Calvin Arnold and Earline Estell (Stoughton) Polk. 

During his childhood, Earl lived at Castleton and helped his grandfather, Earl Stoughton at Riverbanks Orchard.  In 1963, he graduated from Pretty Prairie High School.  Earl then attended Hutchinson Community College, and graduated from Kansas State University with a Degree in Horticulture.  Following Kansas State, he served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969.  After returning to Reno County, Earl worked seven years for his grandfather at Riverbanks Orchard, spending three years operating it.  In 1977, Earl bought a market in Medora, “Polk’s Farm Market”.  For over 44 years, and even at the time of his death, Earl was still selling fruits and vegetables at Polk’s Farm Market and the Farmer’s Market. Raising and selling fruits and vegetables, especially peaches and pumpkins, were Earl’s passion.  In addition, in 1985, he helped found the Reno County Producers Market, and was still an active member.

In 1963, Earl met the love of his life, Pam Greenfield while working at Riverbanks Orchard.    On December 31, 1965, they were married in Hutchinson, sharing over 55 years of marriage. In 1981, they were blessed with a daughter, Sparkle Strawberry Greenfield Polk.  Earl and Pam were a team, working alongside each other, with their daughter and her family when it came to running Polk’s Farm Market.   

Earl is survived by:  wife, Pam; daughter, Sparkle Faidley (Luke); grandchildren, Malachie Lehmann (fiancée Ali Roberts) and Sophia Faidley; nephews, J. J. Polk (Amanda) and Jeff Polk (Jacy); brother-in-law, John Murphy (Micki); uncle, Larry Black; brother-in-law, Billy Greenfield (Ruthann); and a host of customers, who were more like family.

He was preceded in death by:  his parents; sister, Debbie Polk Murphy; and brother, Jerry Polk.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2021, at Elliott Chapel, with John Murphy officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Earl Polk |1945-2021|

Helen Irene Bloom, 92, passed away Friday, July 9, 2021 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas.  She was born on her family farm southeast of Overbrook, KS on June 18, 1929. Her parents were Charles and Ruth Ingle. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Overbrook High School. Following graduation, she attended one semester of Kansas State Teachers College where she earned a teaching certificate. She returned home and taught in a one-room school, Cargie School.  It was during this year that she met her husband, Max Bloom. They were married July 17, 1949. To this union, two girls were born.

In their early wedded years, Max worked oil drilling sites and they traveled the Midwest-Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, pulling their mobile home to the closest city where Max worked. They returned to Kansas when Bonnie started school. They lived in Topeka most of their adult life. Helen made a home and raised her two daughters. She was active in helping with Girl Scouts, church activities and school events. When she became an empty nester, she attended Kaw Valley Vo-Tech School and earned her LPN certificate. She worked at Stormont-Vail as a surgical technician and was a member of the first open heart surgical team. She retired in 1993 and she and Max spent time together in Apache Junction, AZ as snowbirds. They gave up their primary residence in Topeka and relocated to a retirement community in Hesston, KS where they were able to spend more time with Roni's children and enjoy the activities of the community.

Those left to share her memory include her daughters, Bonnie and Bob Totten of Topeka and Roni and John Caffrey of Hesston. Grandchildren include, Jessie White and Amanda Walton of Topeka, Dustin and Emily Hamilton of Larkspur, CO, Darcy and Brett Esau of Beatrice, NE, Levi Caffrey of Lenexa, Jeremy and Jennifer Totten of Lawrence, and Nicholas Totten and Kyrie Lynch of Lawrence. She cherished 8 great grandchildren  and her sister, Viola and Bob Remington of Topeka, multiple nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, Max, her parents and a sister, Margaret Skaggs.

She was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Topeka and attended Hesston United Methodist Church.  She participated in the Menninger Bible Study for many years.

Helen Irene Bloom, 92, passed away Friday, July 9, 2021 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas. She was born on her family farm southeast of Overbrook, KS on June 18, 1929. Her parents were Charles and Ruth Ingle. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Overbrook High School. Following graduation, she attended one semester of Kansas State Teachers College where she earned a teaching certificate. She returned home and taught in a one-room school, Cargie School. It was during this year that she met her husband, Max Bloom. They were married July 17, 1949. To this union, two girls were born.In their early wedded years, Max worked oil drilling sites and they traveled the Midwest-Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, pulling their mobile home to the closest city where Max worked. They returned to Kansas when Bonnie started school. They lived in Topeka most of their adult life. Helen made a home and raised her two daughters. She was active in helping with Girl Scouts, church activities and school events. When she became an empty nester, she attended Kaw Valley Vo-Tech School and earned her LPN certificate. She worked at Stormont-Vail as a surgical technician and was a member of the first open heart surgical team. She retired in 1993 and she and Max spent time together in Apache Junction, AZ as snowbirds. They gave up their primary residence in Topeka and relocated to a retirement community in Hesston, KS where they were able to spend more time with Roni's children and enjoy the activities of the community.Those left to share her memory include her daughters, Bonnie and Bob Totten of Topeka and Roni and John Caffrey of Hesston. Grandchildren include, Jessie White and Amanda Walton of Topeka, Dustin and Emily Hamilton of Larkspur, CO, Darcy and Brett Esau of Beatrice, NE, Levi Caffrey of Lenexa, Jeremy and Jennifer Totten of Lawrence, and Nicholas Totten and Kyrie Lynch of Lawrence. Rose K. Yost, 99, of Moundridge, Kansas, passed away July 9, 2021 at Moundridge Manor.  She was born April 29, 1922 in rural Galva, Kansas, the daughter of John C. and Eva (Koehn) Koehn.

She was united in marriage to Emery D. Yost on April 9, 1944. 

Rose was a member of Garden View Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, rural Halstead.

Rose is survived by her children, Kathy Yost of Hesston, Esther Yost of Moundridge, Rita (Lowell) Koehn of Benito Manitoba, Canada, Don (Tamara) Yost of Halstead, and Susan (Milton) Unruh of Galva; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and sister, Evelyn Dyck of Moundridge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 12, 2021 at Garden View Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Halstead.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Gail Dean Menard was born on August 27, 1939, in Concordia, Kansas to John Julian Menard and Regina Bernadette Marcotte. Gail had two siblings, an older brother Donald Menard, and a younger brother Gary Menard who proceeded him in death in 2011. Gail was blessed in a 50 year union with the late Carolyn LeBlanc in Clyde, Kansas and from that marriage had four children. The first of their children was a son, Galen born in Concordia, Kansas. After a move to Clay Center, Kansas, the addition of two daughters, Lori and Lisa further enriched their lives and family. Lori proceeded him in death in 2018. In 1961, the family relocated to McPherson and later added another daughter, Lana. Gail enjoyed employment in the insurance business, as a radio announcer, and then as a salesman for McPherson Business Machines. He would later become General Manager and owner of this business. Later in life, Gail sold his business and returned to radio as an Account Executive for Radio Kansas. In 2007, Gail joined in marriage to Ila Fae Mackey in Oklahoma City. This union brought Gail so much happiness and enabled him to continue his love of travel, taking them coast to coast and on several cruises. His life was also enriched by adding Ila’s adult children and grandchildren. They made their home in Owasso, Oklahoma before moving to Silver Arrow Independent Living in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma due to Gail’s health condition. Gail’s love for the Lord made music and bible teaching an important part of his life. Not only was he a member of many church choirs through the years, his love of music would lead him to helping orchestrate a group called SGM which promoted Southern Gospel Music groups to perform in McPherson. Other interests were playing golf, astronomy, cards, and watching sports. But playing the card game Pitch is what brought out his competitive side. Better known as Ampa and Papa, Gail was especially proud of his nine grandchildren: Lindsey (Matthew), Josh (Rachelle), Tara (Hugh), Sydney (Josh), Jason (Heidi), Sara (Jake), Jared (Karissa), Clarissa, and Emily (Kendall). There were numerous trips to the park, Dairy Queen, and was always willing to play a game at the house. Gail never missed a single graduation or wedding, and he loved visiting and hearing about each of their interests. Gail thought of his children’s spouses as his own. Rhonda Menard, Park Estes, Kevin Fenimore and Ila’s children, Melody Mills (Steve), Mike Mackey (Angela), Mark Mackey (Belinda) and Monte Mackey were all loved and important parts of his life. Gail entered peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, surrounded by family at his home in Broken Arrow, OK. He was eighty-one. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 15, 2021, at the McPherson Free Methodist Church with Pastor Jared Menard officiating. Family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service time, Thursday, at the church. A private graveside service will be held at the McPherson Cemetery. Melvin R. Handkins was born at the family farm in Kingman County, Kansas, and died April 4, 2020 in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 91. 

He graduated from Kingman High School, then worked at the farm implement store in Kingman, farmed with his dad, and took classes at Wichita (State) University. He married his sweetheart Delia in 1950, after about 200 letters written while she taught music in Newton, and a couple of wrecked cars from driving late between towns. Mel then joined the National Guard and took officer’s training, later serving his country in the army during the Korean Conflict, eventually retiring with the rank of Captain in the Reserves. After returning home, Mel took advantage of the GI bill, and graduated from Kansas State University in 1960 with a degree in Industrial Engineering, while their 4 young children cheered and probably slowed him down! His first job was with Collins Radio Company, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which was making equipment for space launches at the time. Later, he worked for Western Auto in Kansas City, where he and Delia made their home for many years. Mel was a woodworker, restored antique clocks, sang with his wife and many other groups, played softball, and loved rooting for the K.C. Royals. Mel and Delia were always active in church, attending weekly at least, serving on various committees, and of course singing in the choir. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his loyalty to friends, and family. 

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Delia, his parents Earl and Pauline, and 4 siblings Paul, Harold, Eugene, and Edna Marie, he is survived by his children David Handkins (Debbie), Dan Handkins (Shelly), Dianne Karges (Todd), Becky Zieman (Marshall), his 13 grandchildren, Tim Karges (Elissa), Josh Karges (Ty), Matthew Karges (Sunny), Joy Karges (Josiah), Natalia Hayes (Cade), Suzanne Zieman, Ben Zieman (Rachel), Bridget Handkins (Lindsay), Elliot Handkins, Gavin Handkins (Maranda), Rachel Handkins (Max), Jackson Handkins, and Mollie Handkins. He also leaves his joyous 5 great grandchildren, Noah, Abraham, June, Walter, and Lincoln, and many loved nieces, nephews, and friends, especially David and Susan Maughan. 

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, at Westwood Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Kansas.

Christine Schoenfeld, 57, of Hutchinson, died July 6, 2021, while sleeping peacefully at home. She was born October 23, 1963, in Bayshore, NY, to Arnold A. and Frances C. (Lucarello) Bardoneschi.

Christine received her bachelors and master’s degrees from the University of Hawaii. A Hutchinson resident since 2004, she was a devoted wife and mother. An avid Grateful Dead fan, Christine was a free spirit, and an animal lover and activist. She was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

Christine is survived by her husband, Jeff W. Schoenfeld, whom she married August 25, 2001 in Lake Tahoe, NV. Also surviving are: daughter, Gianna Schoenfeld of Hutchinson; mother, Frances Ellingboe (Steve) of Buhler; sister, Suzanne Thomson (Jeff) of Buhler; and numerous fur babies. She was preceded in death by her father.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th&nbsp;Ave., Hutchinson, celebrated by Father Aaron D. Spexarth.

Nelmarie “Nel” Epperley Sidlow joined her Heavenly Father on October 2, 2019 in Denver, CO. 

Nel was born to Everett and Ida Epperley in Oklahoma City, OK on April 9, 1938.  She attended most of her grade school in Haven, Kansas, and she graduated from Haven High School in 1956.  She had a beautiful soprano singing voice and often sang solos at local high school musical concerts, and also played woodwinds and organ.  She attended Fort Hays State College (now University), Hays, Kansas, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in May 1961.  She taught English and Home Economics in Wichita, the Denver area, and other towns in Kansas and Colorado for much of her life.

Nel married, and she had two children, Danalynne “Dana” Sidlow (now deceased) and Michael Darren Sidlow.  The family moved to the Denver, Colorado area, where we remember Nel and the kids would often take crafts classes (macramé, ceramics, etc.) together, and she would ferry Michael to his fly-tying classes.  Fishing and backpacking were frequent family pastimes in those years, and Nel loved hiking and was always glad to be outdoors in the mountains. 

Nel later divorced, and spent subsequent decades as an independent working woman in Denver.  In August 1981, she received a Master of Science with a major in Gerontology from University of Northern Colorado.  Nel worked several years for the Colorado Council on Aging, writing grants and establishing new programs for the aging while there.

While living in Colorado in later years, Nel changed her name to Anne Steele.  During this part of her life, she helped many, volunteering at soup kitchens, donating items to charity, and giving the elderly rides to church and out for meals.  Nel prayed for the whole family daily.  The Bible was always by her nightstand.  She trusted God’s will in all things.

Anne was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter, Dana.  She is survived by her son Michael (San Francisco, CA), granddaughter Christine Giebenrath, six great-grandchildren (all of Denver, CO), and her sisters Shirley (Wayne) Annsun-Donner and Marjorie Koenig (both of Wichita).

Nel was cremated.  A private family graveside service and interment will be held this summer at Laurel Cemetery, Haven, KS.  Anne’s wishes were to have her family and friends know that she loved them.

Carolyn Meier Denchfield, age 85, passed away July 4, 2021, at the Logan
 County Senior Living Center. She was born Carolyn Weigel, to Wilhelmina
 Weigel, in Chicago, Illinois, on January 27, 1936. Her mother passed 
away in March of 1943. Carolyn was then adopted by Wendle and Josephine
 Knoll Meier, of Holcomb, Kansas, in April 1944. Although she was an 
only child, she was surrounded by numerous cousins from the Meier and 
Knoll families. 
She lived on a farm near Holcomb and attended school there until the 
middle of 7th grade when they moved to Garden City. She completed 7th 
and 8th grade at St. Mary's Parochial School. When she was in the 9th 
grade, her English class presented a Christmas play, "No Room at the 
Inn" and that is where she first met Keith Denchfield. He played the 
part of Joseph and she played the part of Mary. She knew Keith during 
high school, but they never dated. She graduated from Garden City High 
School with the class of 1953. 
After graduation she worked as a store clerk at Ideal Foods and then as a
 bank teller at Garden National Bank. In December of 1956 Keith was 
home for Christmas vacation. He came into the bank and asked her to 
attend a class reunion their class was having. She agreed and they 
continued dating and were married September 1, 1957. They welcomed Mark 
in 1959, Jeffrey in 1962 and Wendy in 1964. 
Keith joined the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1962 and was assigned to 
various locations in northwest Kansas, finally ending up in WaKeeney in 
1966. Carolyn went to work for the Ralph Clark Law Firm. Upon Ralph's 
retirement, she went to work for the Probate Judge. During her time with
 the judge, the court system unified, and she became the Deputy Clerk of
 the District Court working for Cora Hladek. She was appointed the Clerk
 of the District Court of Trego County February 1983, where she remained
 until her retirement in September 2001. 
Carolyn was a lifetime member of the Gamma Eta Sorority, with 57 years 
of service, a 50 year member of Christ the King Catholic Church, 
WaKeeney and most recently, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
Oakley. She enjoyed reading and scrapbooking, but her greatest joy was 
being ‘Grammy’ to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During 
their retirement years Keith and Carolyn traveled around the country to 
visit family and friends. They also enjoyed many adventures with the 
class of 1953. She was an amazing daughter, wife, mom, grammy and 
friend and will be missed dearly.

 </figure>Carolyn Meier Denchfield, age 85, passed away July 4, 2021, at the Logan
 County Senior Living Center. She was born Carolyn Weigel, to Wilhelmina
 Weigel, in Chicago, Illinois, on January 27, 1936. Her mother passed 
away in March of 1943. Carolyn was then adopted by Wendle and Josephine
 Knoll Meier, of Holcomb, Kansas, in April 1944. Although she was an 
only child, she was surrounded by numerous cousins from the Meier and 
Knoll families. 
She lived on a farm near Holcomb and attended school there until the 
middle of 7th grade when they moved to Garden City. She completed 7th 
and 8th grade at St. Mary's Parochial School. When she was in the 9th 
grade, her English class presented a Christmas play, "No Room at the 
Inn" and that is where she first met Keith Denchfield. He played the 
part of Joseph and she played the part of Mary. She knew Keith during 
high school, but they never dated. She graduated from Garden City High 
School with the class of 1953. 
After graduation she worked as a store clerk at Ideal Foods and then as a
 bank teller at Garden National Bank. In December of 1956 Keith was 
home for Christmas vacation. He came into the bank and asked her to 
attend a class reunion their class was having. She agreed and they 
continued dating and were married September 1, 1957. They welcomed Mark 
in 1959, Jeffrey in 1962 and Wendy in 1964. 
Keith joined the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1962 and was assigned to 
various locations in northwest Kansas, finally ending up in WaKeeney in 
1966. Carolyn went to work for the Ralph Clark Law Firm. Upon Ralph's 
retirement, she went to work for the Probate Judge. During her time with
 the judge, the court system unified, and she became the Deputy Clerk of
 the District Court working for Cora Hladek. She was appointed the Clerk
 of the District Court of Trego County February 1983, where she remained
 until her retirement in September 2001. 
Carolyn was a lifetime member of the Gamma Eta Sorority, with 57 years 
of service, a 50 year member of Christ the King Catholic Church, 
WaKeeney and most recently, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
Oakley. She enjoyed reading and scrapbooking, but her greatest joy was 
being ‘Grammy’ to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During 
their retirement years Keith and Carolyn traveled around the country to 
visit family and friends. They also enjoyed many adventures with the 
class of 1953. She was an amazing daughter, wife, mom, grammy and 
friend and will be missed dearly.

Carolyn Denchfield (Meier)

Barbara Jean (Watkins) Hollingshead passed from this life on July 7, 2021 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton, Kansas.

Barb was born in Newton, on July 10, 1930, as the third child and only daughter to Homer and Gwen Watkins.  She was active in the First Baptist Church and worked at Graves Drug store as a young teenager through high school, graduating in 1948. In 1951 she moved to Kansas City where she met Charles Hollingshead on a blind date and married him six weeks later – a marriage that lasted for 65 years until his death in 2016.

In 1956, Chuck and Barb moved back to Newton with their two small children to be closer to her family.  Barb became a stay at home Mom until 1967 when she went to work for JC Penny. She was active in several churches over the years including First Baptist, Bible Baptist and Newton Bible. Between the years of 1983 to 2000, they lived in Lyons, KS and Colorado Springs, CO, after which they returned to Newton.  Barb greatly enjoyed volunteering at Elderly Care Facilities and spent several years working with Source of Light in Newton.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 10 at Peterson Funeral Home in Newton. A viewing will be held at Peterson’s on Friday, July 9, and final internment will be at Eastlawn Cemetery in Zimmerdale. Barb was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chuck, three brothers Robert (Lee) of Newton, Mack (Glenda) of Newton, William (Loraine) of Newton.  Survivors include one brother Larry (Patricia) of Tyler TX, Son Dan (Patti) Hollingshead of Longmont CO, Daughter Becky (Bill) Smoldt of Osborne KS, and Son Tim (Denise) Hollingshead of Wichita, KS.  Her survivors include six Grandchildren and 20 Great-Grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with The Reverend Dr. Diana Leaf presiding.  Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday evening at Petersen Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Eastlawn Cemetery in Zimmerdale, Kansas.

Randy George McElheny, 66, of Hutchinson, KS was surrounded by his family when he went to be with the Lord on June 26, 2021.

He was born on March 20, 1955 in Hutchinson, Ks. The son of Maynard George and Wilma McElheny. He retired from Hutchinson Regional Medical Center as housekeeping supervisor.

On June 6, 1974 he married the love of his life, Vickie Hall, in Turon, Ks. She survives with their beloved dog Pumpkin. They were blessed with three children all surviving. Greg (Amy) McElheny, Lorie (Roger) Wingert, Robbin (Gary) Green, all residing in Hutchinson. Randy was “Papa” to 15 grand kids and 12 great grand kids.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents; and brother; Timothy McElheny and brother-in-law Gary Walters. He is survived by his sisters; Debra (Curtis) Shankle, Cheryl (Ben) Newell, Susan (Greg) Rickett and Christina Walters.

He was a 1961 graduate of Peabody High School, Peabody, Kansas. After graduation, he joined the military where he served from 1961 – 1966.  On April 16, 1965, he married Sandra Sue Sebree. They were married 43 years until her death.  Larry was a member of the American Legion which he took great pride in.  He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and especially chasing big foot. His greatest joy was time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife Sandra Sue Watts, daughter Denise Diane Hamm, sons Wyatt Patrick Watts and Troy Scott Watts, parents Gerald “Boss” Watts and Pearl (Davis) Watts, brothers Jerry (Lynn) Watts and Wayne (Peggy) Watts.

Bevo Gilbert Saiz, 79, passed away July 3, 2021, at his residence.  He was born July 15, 1941, in Las Vegas, NM.  Bevo was the son of Rita (Cole) Saiz.

He was employed as an expeditor at Krause Plow, retiring with 41 years of service.  He served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1960 to 1965.  Bevo was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson, and participated as an Adorer in the church’s Adoration Chapel for over 30 years.  He enjoyed watching car races, football, and basketball.  Bevo’s greatest enjoyment however, was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their activities.

On May 6, 1961, he married Lupe Garcia.  She passed away on April 28, 1985.  Bevo married Lydia J. Garcia on August 27, 1988, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  They shared over 32 years of marriage.

He is survived by:  wife, Lydia Saiz of Hutchinson; sons, Frankie Saiz, Phillip Saiz, and Edward Saiz, all of Hutchinson;  step-children, Jesse (Jona) Juma of Hutchinson, Grace Stone of Tucson, AZ, and Ramon (Milleta) Juma of North Carolina; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bevo was preceded in death by:  his mother; wife, Lupe; great-grandson, Santino Saiz; and step-granddaughter, Maya Juma.

HUTCHINSON – Letha Hildebrand, 91, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.  Born December 31, 1929 at Stafford she was the daughter of Ernest and Augusta Wendelburg Hildebrand.  She graduated from Ottawa University.  She taught elementary school in Dodge City for 36 years.  After retiring Letha moved to Hutchinson.  She enjoyed reading, listening to hymns and traveling.  She especially enjoyed her travels to Israel and Alaska.  She loved God and was looking forward to seeing her loved ones in Heaven.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hutchinson and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Letha is survived by niece: Donita Hedrick of Hutchinson.  Great nieces: Pam (Jesse) Wells of Enterprise, KS and Nancy French of Hutchinson.  One great-great niece, two great-great nephews and several cousins.  Preceding her in death were her parents, sister and brother-in-law: Virginia and Ralph Hedrick, and her two nephews: Gordon Hedrick and Stephen Hedrick.

Letha Hildebrand |1929-2021|

William Franklin King, 78, died at home surrounded by family on July 2nd, 2021. Bill was born on May 25th, 1943 in Waukee, Iowa to Claude and Esther King.

When Bill was a child the King family moved from Iowa to Wichita, where Claude worked for the Wichita School System as a window glazer.  In 1959, Bill met the love of his life, Nancy Harrison, while working as a sacker at the Razook’s grocery store.  On December 1st, 1960 Bill married Nancy. They had two children, Polly and Jeff.  Tragically in 1967, Nancy’s mother died and Bill took Nancy’s younger siblings, Roger and Kristine, into his family and raised them as his own.

Bill was always a hard worker and had a variety of skills. He spent years of his life working in the meat processing industry which took him to different towns in Kansas, including Jewell, Ingalls, and Wichita. He retired as a welder from Adco industries in Hesston. But his favorite job, early in his life, was working as a supervisor making blueprints. But the $1.50 an hour they were paying him wasn’t enough so he decided to quit.

Bill lived the last years of his life on a farm outside of Halstead. Bill was a people person and he never met a stranger. He loved his family and pets and working on projects in his shop. He always had a laugh and a twinkle in his eye, that drew people to him. He was reliable, full of common sense, and knew how to have a good time.  He could be onery and it took years for cancer to finally win the battle. He enjoyed life and fought until the end.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Esther King; brother, Major King; Sister Wilma Foster; and nephew/son, Roger Harrison.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; brother Tom King, who is currently very ill; his daughter Polly (Tim) Douglas; son Jeff (Tami) King; niece/daughter Kristine (Craig) Robinett.  Granddaughters Amy and Ashley Douglas; Great granddaughters Haeley and Brooklyn. He had many nieces and nephews many of whom considered him a grandpa and a hero.

A celebration of life will be held at the Halstead Park in the Fall. Date to be determined.

Tragically in 1967, Nancy’s mother died and Bill took Nancy’s younger siblings, Roger and Kristine, into his family and raised them as his own.Bill was always a hard worker and had a variety of skills. He spent years of his life working in the meat processing industry which took him to different towns in Kansas, including Jewell, Ingalls, and Wichita. He retired as a welder from Adco industries in Hesston. But his favorite job, early in his life, was working as a supervisor making blueprints. But the $1.50 an hour they were paying him wasn’t enough so he decided to quit.Bill lived the last years of his life on a farm outside of Halstead. Bill was a people person and he never met a stranger. He loved his family and pets and working on projects in his shop. He always had a laugh and a twinkle in his eye, that drew people to him. He was reliable, full of common sense, and knew how to have a good time. He could be onery and it took years for cancer to finally win the battle. He enjoyed life and fought until the end.Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Esther King; brother, Major King; Sister Wilma Foster; and nephew/son, Roger Harrison.He is survived by his wife Nancy; brother Tom King, who is currently very ill; his daughter Polly (Tim) Douglas; son Jeff (Tami) King; niece/daughter Kristine (Craig) Robinett. Granddaughters Amy and Ashley Douglas; Great granddaughters Haeley and Brooklyn. He had many nieces and nephews many of whom considered him a grandpa and a hero.A celebration of life will be held at the Halstead Park in the Fall.
