John Walter Riggs, 79, of Lindsborg died Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at home in Lindsborg.  John was born March 7, 1942 in Kingman, KS to the late Cecil W. and the late Blanche (Miller) Riggs.  

He married Jane Mary (Bock) Riggs on November 24, 1962 at Manhattan, KS. 

John earned two Bachelor’s degrees, one in Landscape Architecture and one in City Planning. He worked as a City Planner and was owner of Riggs Associates, Lindsborg, Ks, in addition to being the owner/operator of the Riggs Arboretum, Waterloo, KS.  He hosted The Walk in the Woods, in coordination with many Kansas entities (Kansas Foresters, Sunflower RC&amp;D, NRCS, Kansas Fish and Wildlife Dep't.), for area 5th graders for over 20 years to educate them about Kansas trees, ecosystems, and wildlife. 

He is survived by his daughter, Judith J. (Riggs) Clubine, McPherson, KS; son, Robert W. Riggs, Lindsborg, KS; grandchildren, Todd (Libby) Clubine, Wellington, KS; Josie (Brant) Weaver, Lindsborg, KS; Zoe Riggs, Junction City, KS; Great-granddaughter, Briar Clubine; and brother, Roy (Paula) Riggs, Kingman, KS.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Riggs, his parents, Cecil and Blanche Riggs, and his brother, Carl Riggs.

Cremation has been chosen.  A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m.on Saturday, July 24 at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery, Waterloo, KS.

Lois Faye (Goering) Cline, 79, of South Hutchinson, died July 13, 2021, at her home. She was born November 12, 1941, in Hutchinson, to Edward and Lorena (Schwartz) Goering.

Lois graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1959, and then attended HCC to study music. She was a homemaker and also worked as a family support specialist for SRS. Lois loved to garden and especially loved flowers. She did all different types of crafts. Lois also loved music, and though she would deny it, she was a good piano player. She attended South Hutchinson Christian Church.

On May 27, 1961, she married Jerry David Cline in Pretty Prairie. They shared 60 years together.

Lois is survived by: husband, Jerry Cline, South Hutchinson; daughter, Cheri Dixon (Tom), Hutchinson; son, Rick Cline, Wichita; grandchildren, Tyler Dixon (Melanie), Matthew Dixon (Leighann), and Jessica Toevs (David); six great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene “Bernice” Doerksen, Buhler; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Wilbur and Willis Goering; and sister, Avis Morrison.

HILLSBORO - Esther M. Funk, age 86, passed away July 13, 2021, at Bethesda Home, Goessel, Kansas. 

She was born April 9, 1935, near Ulysses, Kansas, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Ratzloff) Frantz. She was a graduate of Tampa High School. On September 21, 1954, she was united in marriage to Eldon R. Funk. She was a church secretary for many years. 

She was preceded in death by brothers, Daniel and David Frantz, and great-grandson Caleb Eckhart. She is lovingly survived by her husband, Eldon of Hillsboro; her sons: Gerald (Carolyn) of Salina; Donovan (Pati) of Hillsboro; and Bryan of Beatrice, NE; her daughter: Janice (Delton) Voth of rural Goessel; her siblings: Edith Unruh of Enid, Oklahoma; Leonard (Jan) Frantz of Hillsboro; Jonas (Kim) Frantz of Tampa; and sisters-in-law: Mary Ann Frantz of Tampa; and Delores Frantz of Durham; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Our dear mother, Laura Bernice Janzen was born on June 20, 1950, to Robert and Wilma (Brown) Jennings at Hutchinson, Kansas.  She peacefully passed away in the evening of July 14, 2021.

She attended schools in the Hutchinson community and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1968.  Mom was a very dedicated hard worker and had her own cleaning business for many years.  She always made sure our house was a beautiful, comfortable home.  We children joked that Hobby Lobby stayed in business because of her.

Mom was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Praying for her family was important to her.  Mom often expressed how she couldn’t wait to see that heavenly mansion.

On October 28, 1983, she married Wayne A. Janzen.  They enjoyed to the fullest 25 years of marriage with two children, Jennifer L. Meggers and C.W. Hurd.  In 1993, they adopted a two year old girl, Ginger L. Janzen.  Living in a country home, Mom took great joy in her garden bed and helping Dad with his projects.  After Dad’s passing, Mom moved to Pine Village independent living in 2012.

Our mother never knew a stranger.  She loved talking to anyone that crossed her path.  She loved all her children and grandchildren, Mitchell, Charity, Cassandra and Joleta, and it will be felt for the rest of our lives.  She especially took great joy in her great-granddaughter, Skarlyt.

Left with fond memories are daughters, Jennifer L. Meggers of South Hutchinson, and Ginger L. Janzen of Inman; son, C.W. Hurd and his wife, Barbara of McPherson; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Martha Kellogg

Daniel Joe Parr, 59, died July 13, 2021, from complications of ALS-Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  He was born April 4, 1962, in Canyonville, Oregon, to Joe and Jeanette VanArsdale Parr.  He attended school in Mullinville, KS and graduated in 1980 from Macksville High School.  He was a life long employee of several city municipalities including St. John, Macksville, and finishing out his career as city Superintendent of City of Inman, KS.  He retired in 2019 due to ALS. 

He was a Christian, and his faith was a very important part of his life, being raised in the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Belpre. He was a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus.  Currently he was attending The Father’s House, Hutchinson, KS.  His faith kept him without fear throughout his illness.  Not one time did he ask, “why me.” His Mantra throughout his illness was James 1: 2-4 and he lived it.

Anyone who knew him knows he was a huge sports fan.  Fantasy football and baseball were his obsessions.

He is survived by his parents Joe (Twila) Parr, Macksville and Jeanette (Jim) Berry, Wichita; wife Joanna Ward-Parr; brothers Jeff (Shari) Parr, Macksville, Gary Parr, Great Bend; sister Rita (Mike) Aubuchon, Mike; children, Kristin (Rich) Powers, Manhattan, Nina (Akeem) Morales Poole, Hutchinson, and Matthew (Maegan Byard) Morales, Hutchinson; and grandchildren, Orion Morales, Korbyn Morales, Klaira Morales, Michelle Powers, Tayten Morales, Michael Powers, Kennyth Powers, Mason Morales, KayLyn Powers, and his special boy Jayc Chocolate “Big Man.”  

He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Cindy Hughes Felin Parr; maternal grandparents, Ruth and Ollie VanArsdale; and paternal grandparents Joe and Faye Parr. He was also preceded in death by his faithful fur babies Bella and Bailey.

Jacob Emil “Jake” Gehring, 90, died July 12, 2021, at Salina Regional Medical Center.  He was born June 13, 1931, in Moundridge, to Emil J. C. and Goldie (Schwartz) Gehring.

Jake graduated from Moundridge High School.  He retired as a heavy equipment operator for the Reno County Landfill.    Jake enjoyed fishing and was a member of First Mennonite Church, Hutchinson.

On November 16, 1956, he married Emma Schrag, in Pretty Prairie.  She died November 5, 2006, after sharing almost 50 years of marriage.

Jake is survived by:  children, Steven Gehring (LaDonna) of McPherson, Shirley Peterman (Art) of Coffeyville, Jackie Adelhardt of Nickerson; brothers, Marvin Gehring of Whitewater, Wayne Gehring (Norma) of Halstead; sister, Twilla Stucky of Moundridge; sisters-in-law, Lenora Gehring of Moundridge, and Gloria Gehring of South Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Willard and Harvey; son-in-law, Larry Adelhardt; and granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Adelhardt.

Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Buhler East Cemetery. Ruth Heiser, a devoted wife and mother, passed away July 13th, 2021, at Salem Home at the age of 94.  

Ruth was born February 4th, 1927, to Adolph and Lydia Skibbe in Marion, KS.  She attended grade school at Kreutzinger School House and graduated from Marion High School.  Ruth married Charles September 1, 1949, at Strassburg Baptist Church, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage in 2016.  Ruth and Charles had a small dairy farm in their early years of marriage. They sold cream and milk, along with eggs from their many chickens, along with tending a large garden.  They were blessed with 2 sons to help tend the farm, Mark and Don.  In the mid 60’s she obtained her beauty certificate and ran a beauty shop out of their home for over 35 years.  

She was a devoted member of the Strassburg Baptist Church; involved in choir, served as church pianist, a Sunday School teacher and involved in Kings Daughters for many years.  She was a skilled seamstress and used her talent to support the White Cross.  As a deacon’s wife she loved entertaining.  Ruth loved baking, especially making pies and bread.  

Ruth is lovingly remembered by her son, Mark Heiser and his wife Katherine; grandchildren Stephanie Albrecht (husband Kelly) and Krista Donahue (husband Andrew), and 4 great-granddaughters; CheyLynn, Harper, Nessa, and Molly.  She is predeceased by her husband Charles, and son Don.  

Family will gather with friends on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion. The family will be celebrating her life in a private ceremony at Lewis Cemetery in Ramona, KS.

David Edward Armbrister, age 80, died 
Friday, May 7, 2021, at his home in rural Trego Co., Kansas after a short
 battle with cancer.&nbsp; &nbsp;He was born April 29, 1941, in Hays, Kansas at St.
 Anthony Hospital to Ed and Martha (Sauer) Armbrister.&nbsp; He attended 
grade school in rural Trego County through 8th grade where his mother 
Martha had been a school teacher and then graduated with the Class of 
1959 from Ellis High School. He met Mickey Ruth Foster when he was a 
patient at Hadley Hospital where she worked.&nbsp; He married Mickey Ruth 
Foster September 6, 1969, she preceded him in death April 21, 2015.

David began farming his family’s farm 
at a young age until his passing. He loved feeding, checking and 
watching his cattle grow. He loved planting, and harvesting his wheat 
and milo crops with all his family helping with the harvest as well as 
many others through the years. He also loved spending time with his 
family, grandkids and great grandkids showing them the family farm. He 
enjoyed his time visiting with family, friends and about anyone who 
wanted to take the time to converse.&nbsp; He started his Basic Training in 
Ft. Leonard Wood, MO on Jan. 6th, 1964 then completed his training Feb. 
27th, 1964 and finished his final training at Ft. Carson, CO. He then 
joined the National Guard 995th Maintenance Company in Hays, KS and 
attended many of the 995th Maintenance Company reunions in recent 
years.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Legion Post in Hays, KS and also
 a member of St. John Lutheran Church rural Ellis. He served for a 
period of time as a board member at the Golden Belt Coop Ellis, KS.

He is survived by his children, 
daughter, Davon Armbrister and significant other Mark Harbold, Ellis; 
sons, Michael (Gennie) Armbrister, Ellis; and Darin Armbrister, Ellis.&nbsp; 
Grandchildren, Kourtney (Skyler) Talkington, Ellis, KS; Aaron 
Schinstock, Washington DC, Brody and Bryce Armbrister, Ellis, KS; Alexa

SYLVIA – Naomi Hall, 85, died Monday, July 12, 2021 at Wichita.  

She was born October 7, 1935 at Cherokee, OK, the daughter of Clyde J. and Larene B. Alexander Sayre.  On December 21, 1952 she married Henry Hall, Sr. at Pratt.  He died November 29, 2020.  

She is survived by her children: Katherine (Fred) Wilhoft and Henry (Charlotte) Hall, Jr. Brothers: Larry Sayre, Tom Sayre, John Sayre and Dale Sayre. Sisters: Mary Baetz and Suella Smith.  Nine grandchildren.  37 great grandchildren.  Three gt. gt. grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by three infant children, daughter-in-law: Sharon Hall, grandson: Daniel Hall, gt. grandchildren: Christina “Tina” Schoenecker and Wayne Schoenecker.

Turon - Sandra Sue Toliver, 81, passed away Monday, June 14, 2021 in Lincoln, California. She was born on June 26, 1939 in Sylvia, Kansas to Frank C. and Francis E. (Froman) Gill. On October 10, 1955 she married Michael Charles FitzGerald in Turon, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1988. She would marry John Toliver on December 24, 1982 in Fremont, California. He preceded her in death on November 12, 2007.

Sue was a very active member of Fremont Singles Square Dance Club and enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by her children, Colonel Michael Alan (Robin) FitzGerald, U.S. Army (Retired) of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Ronald Charles FitzGerald of Fremont, California, Susan Gail (Marvin) (FitzGerald) Mattie of Fremont, California and Robert Mark (Alison) FitzGerald of Cairns, Australia; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Plano, Texas - Judy Pauline Swaney Lovell, 72, passed away Monday, July 12, 2021 at Baylor Scott and White Hospital. She was born on November 25, 1948 in Grundy County, Missouri to Howard Cecil and Pauline (Strine) Lovell. Judy married Donald Swaney on June 24, 2000 at Macksville Free Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on July 30, 2006.

Judy graduated from Pratt High School in 1966. She was a case worker for Social and Rehabilitation Services. She was a member of Pratt Free Methodist Church and transferred to Macksville Free Methodist Church. She was a former Girl Scout and Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed painting, Elvis and the color purple.

She is survived by her daughter, Angela (Jon) Grossman of Nevada, Texas; grandchildren, Michael Grossman, Suszan Grossman, Matthew Grossman, Johanna Grossman; brothers, Kenneth Eugene Lovell of Pratt and Bobby Dean (Vickie) Lovell of Denver, Colorado.

Judy Pauline Swaney Lovell |1948-2021|

Lawrence ‘Larry’ Earl Legge, passed away July 9, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita.  He was born September 21, 1955, in Chanute, to Lawrence William and Ruth Ann (Johnson) Legge.

Larry served in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division from 1972-1975.  He worked as a welder at Agco Corporation, Hesston, retiring with many years of service.  Larry was an avid motorcycle rider and enjoyed riding his Harley, watching NASCAR and football, and spending time with his family and friends.  He was fond of his guns and a member of the National Rifle Association.

Larry is survived by: daughter, Jessica (Dominic Vargas) Legge of Wichita; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Nancy Kellerman of Florida; close friends, Wes and Lea Ann Mullins of Hutchinson; and Jessica’s mother, Angel Leamon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Chaplain Highside Hall officiating. He was born September 21, 1955, in Chanute, to Lawrence William and Ruth Ann (Johnson) Legge.Larry served in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division from 1972-1975. He worked as a welder at Agco Corporation, Hesston, retiring with many years of service. Larry was an avid motorcycle rider and enjoyed riding his Harley, watching NASCAR and football, and spending time with his family and friends. He was fond of his guns and a member of the National Rifle Association.Larry is survived by: daughter, Jessica (Dominic Vargas) Legge of Wichita; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Nancy Kellerman of Florida; close friends, Wes and Lea Ann Mullins of Hutchinson; and Jessica’s mother, Angel Leamon.He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Chaplain Highside Hall officiating. Ronald “Stony” L. Parks left this earth contrary to how he lived it, quietly and peacefully in his sleep on July 11, 2021. But in typical Stony fashion he was surrounded by loved ones in his home in Woodward OK.

Mercifully, they broke the mold after Ronald was born to Ronald K. Parks and the late Eleanor Joan (Gallaugher) on October 2, 1963 in Medicine Lodge, KS. Although he was born Ronald Parks, most simply knew him as “Stony”. A nickname given to him during early childhood by his older brother after seeing the television series Stoney Burke; needless to say, the name stuck.

After graduating from Ellinwood High School in 1982, Stony spent most of his life following in his family’s footsteps, working in the oilfield. No one could tell Stony anything, finally relenting to that fact, he started his own trucking business in 2014; an accomplishment that was a great source of pride for him.

His only greater source of pride was his family. Stony cherished his two sons, Chance and Caleb and no one around him was ever unaware of that fact. If you were around Stony you could expect to be in a selfie or three, but he perhaps photographed no one more than the pride and absolute joy of his life: his two grandchildren; Andria and Kenneth. Stony was always the life of the party and a people person in its truest form. In his later years, Stony enjoyed traveling to see friends and relatives, always bringing with him a good time and some good or not-so-good stories. When he cared for you it was deep and no amount of words could take the place of the energy and warmth he brought with him. Stony enjoyed leather-working and was a collector of rare coins and knives. Stony was also a fan of the KU Jayhawks and NASCAR, especially the Earnhardt years. There was no better driver in the world to him than Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Stony was also vain. You could always find him in his signature graphic tee and unbuttoned plaid shirt, paired with the latest style of sneakers. And his hair. He never had a single hair out of place, always making sure he looked his best.

Always the lady’s man, in death, Stony is reunited with the two women who shaped him most, his mother Joan and his older sister Julie. Stony is also preceded in death by his nephew Brent.

In addition to his two sons, Stony is survived by his father, Ronald, his namesake and avid supporter throughout the years and his older brother, Kenneth Parks, a man he deeply admired and respected more than anyone.

He leaves behind his two grandchildren and the closest thing he had to a daughter, his daughter-in-law Chelsey Parks. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Tonya Parks, whose food he usually liked.

In addition to other numerous family members, close friends, and countless impressions he left on all those he met, he also leaves behind a niece and two nephews. He was the self-proclaimed protector of his niece Whitney, he shared his love for a good pair of shoes with his nephew Tyler, and was a fan of late nights watching television and eating push-pops with his other nephew Cole.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 16, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E. Lincoln, Medicine Lodge, KS 67104 with Pastor Tom Walters officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge, KS.

Dr. Marvin Joseph Parrish – clinical psychologist, college professor, jokester, and Kenny Rogers doppelganger – has left the building.

Marvin was born on January 26, 1942, in Wichita, Kansas. After 79 years of wonderful living, making the best of his final years with Parkinson’s Disease, Marvin passed away on July 9, 2021 in Newton, Kansas. He was surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

Marvin Parrish was a farm boy, a dog lover, a class clown, and an exemplary student. He served as Student Body President of Oklahoma Christian College, where he earned a bachelor’s in English in 1964 and pranked his dorm mates by short-sheeting their beds. Marvin also earned degrees in Philosophy and Religion and Psychology from Wichita State and Washington University in St. Louis. He was the first intern to pursue clinical neuropsychology at the University of Indiana, where it was developed. Dr. Parrish had a long career as a therapist, holding rare specialties in hypnosis. He was the owner and operator of the McPherson and Newton Psychological Service Centers. After serving on-staff at several other mental health institutions, he retired in 2012. White-bearded Marvin also enjoyed a long “acting career,” pretending to be Santa Claus for the many children who saw him in the street and suspected he was Kris Kringle incognito.

Marvin treasured his wife of 52 years, Kathryn Salmon Parrish. He took every opportunity to proclaim she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Marvin’s many hobbies included watching Kansas college basketball teams, gardening and planting trees, playing card games Rook and Skip-Bo, eating Super Supreme pizza, drinking milkshakes and Pepsi, listening to the Oak Ridge Boys, teasing everyone he met, and driving his electric orange Porsche 914 convertible. He put his beautiful baritone voice to use in barbershop quartets, and sang to his older daughter, Angela, who is now a songwriter and music producer. 

Marvin’s love of justice and equity lives on in the career of his younger daughter, Abbey, who is a paralegal for Legal Aid. Marvin had to wait 44 years to become a father, and he cherished his girls every day.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Viola, and infant sister Janet Fern. He lives on in the memories of his wife, Kathy, daughter Angela Parrish and son-in-law Dave Richards, daughter Abbey Parrish, brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Linda Parrish, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He also lives on in the positive trajectory of the lives of those he helped as a therapist.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 14, at 11am at Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N Main St, in Newton. A memorial has been established with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, ℅ Petersen Funeral Home.

His family thanks his doctor, Randall Goering, who helped him live a quality life with Parkinson’s for 15 years. Marvin was relentlessly positive. He frequently spoke about how his life with Parkinson’s was still blessed. When a person is disabled in some way, they alone determine their quality of life. His family is heartbroken that the doctor is out, but they are celebrating his rich and full life. So have a milkshake or plant a tomato seed in his honor. Miner Seymour, an affable designer/builder and family man known for his sense of joyful creativity, died on July 9, 2021 in Newton, Kansas after six years of progressive dementia.  He was 72.  He was born in Columbus, Ohio on Valentine’s Day, 1949, to Miner W. and Anne Rutherford Seymour.  He graduated from Columbus Academy in 1967 and Vanderbilt University in 1971.  He attended Bethel College Mennonite Church.

Miner’s first job in high school was working below the deck on the S.S. Badger, the last coal-fired passenger/car ferry steamship operating in the U.S. The Badger crossed Lake Michigan to Wisconsin twice a day. After graduating from college, he worked in the field of medical economics, then went on to pursue his interest in architecture.

After meeting Valetta Goering over a pair of broken eyeglasses in a medical clinic in Columbus, Miner followed her to the Pacific Northwest where they married, and he studied architecture.  In 1985, they returned to Valetta’s hometown of Moundridge, Kansas, where he built their family home and welcomed their only child, Kate. Over the years, he put his design and construction skills to use with a focus on environmentally sustainable home design. He also helped build homes for Mennonite Disaster Service and Habitat for Humanity.

The essence of Miner was his cheerful imagination.  He remained playful throughout his adult life and delighted in helping others find similar joy.  At one point, he created a sand beach at the edge of the family apple orchard for nights around the bonfire and soaks in the stock tank “swimming pool” with friends.

Miner’s creative drive led him to study art and poetry as an adult at Bethel College, graduating with a bachelors degree in 1990. In 1992, Miner started a concert series called “Old Settlers Inn” which attracted singer-songwriters from all over the country performing sold-out shows for 17 years. Old Settlers Inn concerts are still aired on KMUW’s New Settlers Radio Hour.

Miner’s fondest memories centered around his family’s 115-year-old cottage on Lake Michigan where he spent every summer of his life enjoying water sports, building sand castles and skipping rocks with Kate and other children, and enjoying sunsets over the lake.

Miner was preceded in death by his parents along with his only two siblings, Emily Berand and Nancy Billington, and his brother-in-law, Howard Knight. Survivors include his wife, Valetta, daughter, Kate Seymour, son-in-law, Todd Lawrence, granddaughter, Ruth Seymour, sister-in-law, Wanda Knight, brother-in-law, John Berend, and seven nieces and nephews.  

A celebration of life is planned for July 28 at Bethel College Mennonite Church at 10:00 AM to honor Miner, who never let go of the thread.  Masks will be required at the service.

At one point, he created a sand beach at the edge of the family apple orchard for nights around the bonfire and soaks in the stock tank “swimming pool” with friends.Miner’s creative drive led him to study art and poetry as an adult at Bethel College, graduating with a bachelors degree in 1990. In 1992, Miner started a concert series called “Old Settlers Inn” which attracted singer-songwriters from all over the country performing sold-out shows for 17 years. Old Settlers Inn concerts are still aired on KMUW’s New Settlers Radio Hour.Miner’s fondest memories centered around his family’s 115-year-old cottage on Lake Michigan where he spent every summer of his life enjoying water sports, building sand castles and skipping rocks with Kate and other children, and enjoying sunsets over the lake.Miner was preceded in death by his parents along with his only two siblings, Emily Berand and Nancy Billington, and his brother-in-law, Howard Knight. Survivors include his wife, Valetta, daughter, Kate Seymour, son-in-law, Todd Lawrence, granddaughter, Ruth Seymour, sister-in-law, Wanda Knight, brother-in-law, John Berend, and seven nieces and nephews. A celebration of life is planned for July 28 at Bethel College Mennonite Church at 10:00 AM to honor Miner, who never let go of the thread. Roger Gilbert Black, 87, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away, Thursday, January 21st, 2021, with his wife Rosalie at his side, in the Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson. Roger was a loving and beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed.

Roger was born in Melrose, New Mexico, on July 11, 1933, the son of Eva (West) and Roger Marvin Black. He was proud of his New Mexico heritage and often talked about his grandfathers who had homesteaded in the New Mexico territory before it became a state in 1912.

After graduating from Albuquerque High School in 1953, he was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1954, to support the Korean Conflict. Roger received a national Secret security clearance, and he served as a driver for officers who were leading the development of the Atlas Missile Sites surrounding Washington, DC.. He served in the active Army until 1956, and continued in the Army Reserve through 1961, when he was Honorably Discharged, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1957, Roger moved to Alamogordo, NM, near the Holloman Air Force Base. He used his natural proficiency in mechanical engineering and metal working at Holloman; employed by private government contractors, as a Lead Mechanical Technician on NASA, Air Force, and General Motors safety research projects. His work included development of seat, lap, and shoulder belts, and air bags for passenger cars, aircraft, and spacecraft. Many of these became the safety standards used today.

Roger Gilbert Black was united in marriage with Rosalie Lowe-Snyder on November 26, 1969, in Alamogordo, New Mexico. The couple, and her two daughters, established their first home together in Alamogordo. In 1971, Roger and family moved to Slidell, LA where Roger took a role with the US Civil Service and the US Navy to build a testing facility to conduct the testing of different restraint systems that are currently used in Naval aircraft. In 1996, after 25 years, Roger and Rosalie retired to a beautiful mountain home in northwest New Mexico and enjoyed many years exploring the trails, parks, and mountains of the Southwest.

Roger was a avid golfer, winning the City Championship in Alamogordo, one year; and first place, twice in the City Championship Second Flight in Slidell. Roger traded golfing in the sand of New Mexico for fishing in the bayous of Louisiana, while avoiding the alligators. Over the years, he used his skills in carpentry to build many beautiful pieces of wood furniture for the family.

Roger was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Slidell, LA where he served as Head Usher for 23 years. He has been a member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren for the past twelve years. With other members and college students he has participated in mission projects and trips using his mechanical and carpentry skills to build and rebuild homes for families in need.

Roger is survived by his loving, devoted wife of over 51 years, Rosalie. of McPherson, KS; his children, Karen Duprey, of Las Cruces, NM; Diane McGee, husband James, of Hazlet, TX; his step-children, Debra Farrelly, husband James. of Indianapolis, IN; and Susan Throckmorton, husband Scott, of Albuquerque, NM.; his grandchildren, Dawn Bridges (Shane); Alexis Duprey; Robert Farrelly (Kelly); John Farrelly (Monica); Amanda Welles (Sam); Paige Throckmorton (Alexandria); and his great grandchildren, Rosalie and Madelyn Farrelly; Aurora Farrelly; and Matthew Welles.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Roger M. Black and Eva West Black Wells, and several beloved aunts and uncles.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cedars Wellness Center with Reverend Chris Whitaker officiating.

Gary Brewer passed peacefully at his Cunningham home which was known by many as “the duck shack” on July 4, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents Billy Gene and Patricia Ann Brewer. He is survived by his two daughters Kaley Brewer and Melissa Brewer, and two granddaughters Brynlee Brewer and Kinsey Brewer. Gary is also survived by his two sisters Jennifer Haines (David) and Susan Evans (Mike). Gary was a retired owner/operator of BEAR automotive, and Doggy Daycare.

As a young man, Gary graduated from North High School (’75) and went on to pursue baseball at Seward County Junior College. He was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, KU Jayhawks, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

He was a lover of the great outdoors and would hunt and fish at every opportunity he had. He was known for his hospitality and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it. Gary never knew a stranger, was quick witted, and had a unique sense of humor. His tell you like it is attitude will never be forgotten. Gary loved to entertain, brought life to the party, and was also known for his unmatched cooking skills. Riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle alongside some of his best friends was one of his favorite things to do. Gary was also a proud pet owner of his 3 dogs Harley, Rocco, and Riley. All who knew Gary knew that he loved to host a party so please come join us one last time and have a drink for the old man. A celebration of life will be held July 18th at The Vail Venue from 1 p.m. -4 p.m. 210 N Mosley St, Wichita.

Donna Mae Lackey, 93, died July 10, 2021, at Pleasant Hills, Hutchinson.  She was born May 22, 1928, in McPherson County, to Frank and Ella (Stecher) Wittorff.

Donna Mae attended Wolf Creek Grade School and graduated from Inman Rural High School in 1946.  She grew up on a farm, and continued living the farm life after she was married.  Donna Mae loved farming, and helping her husband, Milton, milk cows and raise sheep, hogs, and chickens.   She also enjoyed cooking for her family (she was known for her homemade angel food cakes), and sewing.  Donna Mae lived on the farm until 2013, when she moved to Pleasant View Retirement Community, Inman. 

On October 15, 1946, Donna Mae married a neighbor boy, who was also a sailor; Milton K. Lackey, in Inman. He died November 2, 1997, after they shared over 51 years of marriage living on their family farm.

Donna Mae is survived by:  children, Connie Neufeld (Fred) of Inman, Harlan Lackey, Betty Van Osdol, both of Hutchinson, Karen Fast (Dave) of Waxahachie, TX, Marsha Capps (Dale) of Inman, and Pamela Branham (David) of Kansas City, MO; 13 grandchildren, Jennafer, Elizabeth, Dennis, Sarah, Clinton, Jebadiah, Eric, Andy, Terrence, Lonnie, Jesse, Nathan, and Rachel; and 22-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Melvin “Mike” Wittorff.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2021, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson.  Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Ruth Marilyn Schmidt was born on August 16, 1926 in Moundridge, Kansas to Philip and Rose Wedel.  At the age of 10, her family relocated to Aberdeen, Idaho where her father, Philip Wedel, became the pastor of the Aberdeen Mennonite Church for 8 years.  She often reminisced fondly about the years spent in Idaho.  Ruth graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1944.  After graduation, Ruth attended Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas for one year, receiving her degree to teach.  She then taught 1st through 8th grade at the Heimbaugh School near Goessel, Kansas the following year.

Ruth was married to Orlando Earl Schmidt on September 11, 1946.  She and Orlando celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1996 and shared 53 wonderful years.   Orlando and Ruth established their home and farm northeast of Moundridge where they lived until his passing in 1999.  After this, Ruth moved to town in Moundridge until 2016, when she relocated to Oxford Grand Assisted Living in northwest Wichita until her passing.  Orlando and Ruth had four children:  Dwayne, Elaine, Carol, and James.  Ruth was a supportive and loving wife and mother who gave up a teaching career to be home for her family.  She loved to attend the school musical programs in which all her children participated as well as watch her sons play football and basketball.  She sewed many of the girls’ clothes and spent a great deal of time gardening, cooking and baking for the family.  She was active in the West Zion Christian Homemakers and loved to play the piano and read.

Ruth’s faith was greatly tested over her 94 years through the cancer of her father, Philip Wedel, husband Orlando and son James, as well as her own cancer from 1996 to 1998.  Yet through all of these difficult times, she stayed faithful to her Lord and Savior.  Her motto became, “one day at a time”, as she struggled with her health issues, a decline in hearing and walking, and being isolated from family and friends through the COVID-19 health crisis.  She tried her best to be self-reliant, keeping her mind sharp by doing word searches and reading.  Her children often remarked how she knew her expenses down to the penny when she was managing her own finances.  She never gave up trying to continue to walk even though one knee was failing her.  She was finally free of her pain when she passed into eternal life on July 11, 2021 at the age of 94, a month short of her 95th birthday.

Preceding Ruth in death were her parents, Philip and Rose Wedel, her older sister Ellen Friesen and brother-in-law, Wilmer Friesen and her youngest son, Jim Schmidt.  Surviving her are her son Dwayne Schmidt (DeAnne) of Wichita, Kansas, daughter Elaine Hofman (Don) of Lincoln, Nebraska, daughter Carol Ward (Marty) of Moundridge, daughter-in-law Kari Schmidt of Nashville, her grandchildren,  Ashley Janzen (Jesse), Kyle Schmidt, Krista Wiebe (Josh), Christine Widman (Andy), Lindsey Hanson (Brent), Jared Ward(Christy), Ryan Ward (Shelby), Lauren Schmidt, Michael Schmidt and Taylor Schmidt and great grandchildren, Jordy, Jace, Lainey, Paisley, Reese, Evan, Evelyn, Micah, Eliya, Bronx, Hudson, one brother, Lee Wedel (Alda) of Hesston, one sister, Lois Regehr (Dean) of rural Inman, sister-in-law, Laura Friesen of North Newton, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leroy and Marcella Woelk of Goessel.   Her family and friends will greatly miss her beautiful smile and sweet and kind nature.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 16, 2021 at West Zion Cemetery, Moundridge, with a memorial service to follow at 2:30 p.m., at West Zion Mennonite Church. Norita Larson, 96, passed away on July 10, 2021, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community. She was born September 26, 1924, Southwest of Walnut, KS on the family farm to Fred and Nellie (Fitzpatrick) Mullin. She graduated from Walnut High School.

She belonged to Holy Cross Catholic Church, St. Veronicas’ Circle and Holy Cross Alter Society. On April 19, 1948, she married Alvin Larson in Dodge City, KS.

Norita Larson, 96, passed away on July 10, 2021, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community. On April 19, 1948, she married Alvin Larson in Dodge City, KS.Survivors are two daughters, Karen Puskas (John) of Conifer, CO, and Carol Byington (Dart) of Elizabeth, CO, three granddaughters, Susan Puskas Lawson, Kari Puskas Johnson, and Sarah Byington Murrell. She has one surviving sister, Helen Lagazzino of Portland, OR.She was preceded in death by her husband Al, her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.Parish Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 2021, and Mass of Christian Burial will follow the rosary at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson, KS, with Father Aaron Spexarth presiding. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, KS.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Holy Cross Catholic Church in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67502.
