Charlene Francis Guillot passed away peacefully, into her Savior’s loving arms on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at the age of 86. Mrs. Guillot was born on February 25, 1935 the daughter of Charles and Juanita Kay (Morris) Brown. She grew up in Herington, Kansas and married Jesse John Guillot on February 27, 1952 in Abilene, Kansas. They were married for 62 years.

Charlene was devoted to her children, grandchildren and family. She was a homemaker and was later employed by Tony’s Pizza Service until her retirement in 1999. She enjoyed family gatherings and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was famous in the circle of family and friends for her peach cobbler and sweet potato pies. She also loved her collection of ceramic birds and people watching.

She was preceded in death by her 25 month daughter Kathy in 1953, her parents and her husband, Jesse in 2014. Her loving family includes her son, David Guillot (Rachel) of Salina, Kansas; daughters, Vickie Guillot and Olivia Price (Keith) all of Salina, Kansas, DeeAnn Spencer (Charles) of Kansas City, Missouri; brothers, Charles Brown (Diane) of Los Angeles, California, Carl Brown (Delores) and Dennis Brown (Dariel), Curtis Brown, all of Seattle, Washington; sisters, Juanita Rodriquez of Los Angeles, California, Patricia Crenshaw of Atlanta, Georgia, Vernessa Alexander of Seattle, Washington; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Her life celebration service will be on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church led by Pastor Allen Smith. Visitation with family will be at 12:00 noon with the service to follow at 1:00 pm. There will be a meal following the service and then a graveside service at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington, Kansas.

Ben J. Wiens of Parkside Homes in Hillsboro, Kansas died on August 19, 2021, at the age of 102. He is survived by his daughter Sandra of Guilford, Connecticut and her husband Robert Harms, and by his sister Luella Stauffer of Mountain Lake, Minnesota. He was a lifelong educator, having taught at Tabor College, Rutgers University, Moravian College, and Penn State University, and he was active in various church and service projects during his retirement in Hillsboro.

Born in Hillsboro, Kansas, on February 28, 1919, while his father was attending Tabor College, he grew up on a dairy farm in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. His earliest memories were seeing his father taking the horse and buggy to the rural school where he was teaching. His mother took care of the dairy farm and chickens during the day. His duties at home included milking the cows and delivering milk to some twenty-five customers. He was baptized at the age of 12 and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church in Mountain Lake, embarking on a lifelong commitment to scripture and Christlike living. He attended German school for the first five grades and then was transferred to the public schools, graduating from high school in 1938.

After high school graduation, he went to Mankato State Teachers College in Manketo, Minnesota for a two-year teaching certificate. This qualified him for a rural school position, which he taught for two years. He married Mary Wall of Mountain Lake, Minnesota in 1942. Their daughter Sandra was born in 1951. After marriage, he returned to Mankato State University to finish his degree program with majors in Industrial Arts and Social Studies. After supervising student teachers for three years in the Mankato State University Laboratory School, he went to Stout State University in Wisconsin for his master’s degree in Educational Psychology, and he later earned a doctorate in education at Colorado State University in Greeley.

He joined the faculty of Tabor College as chairman of the Education Department in 1949, where he got Tabor’s application for teacher certification approved in 1958 and served as the Registrar and then the Dean of the college. After a stint of teaching at Rutgers University in New Jersey, he became chairman of the education program at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He then became a supervisor of Penn State University’s continuing education program for eastern Pennsylvania.

After his retirement in 1982, he and Mary moved back to Hillsboro, where his membership in the Hillsboro M. B. Church provided an opportunity to be the chair of the church council, as well as for Sunday School teaching. He became the executive director of the Kansas Paraguay Partners organization for seven years, making two trips to Mennonite settlements in Paraguay, and he directed a major project to restore all eighty panels of the stained-glass windows in the Tabor College auditorium. Throughout his retirement years, he remained a prolific reader and a constant learner.

Charles Louis Miskimen, Jr., 90, of Moundridge, Kansas, passed away Friday, August 20, 2021 at his home.&nbsp; He was born August 3, 1931 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of Charles Louis Sr. and Hilda E. (Anderson) Miskimen.

Charles served in the United States Army in the Korean War from 1952 – 1954, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

He owned and operated his own business, Chuck’s Electric, in Cedar Rapids, IA, working as a Master Electrician.&nbsp; Charles later sold insurance for Farmers Elevator Mutual Insurance Company, later known as Farmland Insurance Company, for 20 years.&nbsp; Following this, Charles started Heritage House Floral and Gift Shop in McPherson, KS, until 1998.

Charles was a charter member of the Oakland Church of the Nazarene in Cedar Rapids, where he helped start and build.&nbsp; He would often lead the music and singing in the church, while Norma played the organ or piano. He later joined the Church of the Nazarene in McPherson.&nbsp; Most recently, Charles has been a member of the First Church of Nazarene in Newton.&nbsp; He was also a member of the American Legion in Newton.

He and his family enjoyed watching the planes land and take off at the local airport.&nbsp; Charles pursued and obtained his pilot’s license, eventually purchasing his own private plane so the family could continue to enjoy this hobby together.

He was united in marriage to Norma Price on October 6, 1956.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on March 1, 1993.&nbsp; Charles later married Dona (Price) Paulsen on June 5, 1993.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Dona Miskimen; daughters, Jeannine (Tom) Emmons of Wentzville, MO, and Beth (Lee) VanHyfte of Palo, IA; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, plus one on the way.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Norma Miskimen; three brothers and two sisters.

Loretta May Ruth Shultz, 67, passed away August 18, 2021, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice-St. Francis, Wichita.&nbsp; She was born October 2, 1953, in Hutchinson, to Roscoe T. and Charlotte (Hagerman) Shultz.

Loretta was a graduate of Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College, and Wichita State University.&nbsp; She worked as an occupational therapist, retiring with many years of service.&nbsp; Loretta was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hutchinson.

She was devoted to her country and served in the Patriot Guard Riders.&nbsp; Loretta was a lover of animals.&nbsp; She was always rescuing and fostering animals, especially dogs and cats.

Loretta is survived by:&nbsp; nieces,&nbsp; Julie (Bill) McKeel and Sarah (Larry) Ford; nephews, Leonard (Angela) Nelson, Nick Prine, Rob Prine, James Prine, John Prine, Danny Prine, and Martin Shultz; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews;&nbsp; and her fur babies, Delilah, PT, Boomer, and Snowflake.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; brother, Melvin Shultz; and sister, Grace Shultz.

Joan Marvella Black, 86, formerly of Hutchinson, passed away August 16, 2021, at her son’s residence in Watauga, TX.&nbsp; She was born November 27, 1934, in Hutchinson, to John Martin and Hattie Irene (McNett) Starks.

Before moving to Hutchinson, Joan lived in Texas and worked for Sears.&nbsp; Upon moving to Hutchinson, she transferred to the Hutchinson Sears store and retired with many years of service.&nbsp; Joan then went to work for Doskocil Foods, South Hutchinson, and retired with over 10 years of service.&nbsp; In order to stay active after retirement, she began working part-time at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She lived in Hutchinson most of her life and then moved back to Texas five years ago, to be with her family.

Joan was an active member of First Assembly of God Church, Hutchinson, and Mount Olivet Worship Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She had a servant’s heart and enjoyed being involved in the life of the church, from teaching Sunday School, to serving on various committees and boards, singing in the choir, and playing the piano.&nbsp; Joan loved her family, sharing her faith, and serving her Savior.&nbsp;

On November 27, 1948, Joan married Merle Dean Black, Sr., in Harrison, AR.&nbsp; They shared over 61 years of marriage, prior to his death on May 30, 2010.

She is survived by:&nbsp; sons, Mark Eugene (Linda) Black of Andover, and Merle Dean (Cindy) Black, Jr. of Watagua, TX; grandchildren, Misty Farrell, Troy Black, Corey Black, and Brandon (April) Black; great-grandchildren, Alyssa McReynolds and Aiden Black; niece, Connie King; and nephew, Kurt Starks.

Joan was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husband; brothers, Jackie Starks and John Starks, Jr.; sister, Carolee Redenbaugh; and nephews, Randy Wilkes and Kevin Starks.

Funeral service will be 10am Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Pastor John Chastain and Chaplain Luanne Haddaway officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to service time on Saturday, with the family present at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

Joan Marvella Black, 86, formerly of Hutchinson, passed away August 16, 2021, at her son’s residence in Watauga, TX.&nbsp; She was born November 27, 1934, in Hutchinson, to John Martin and Hattie Irene (McNett) Starks.Before moving to Hutchinson, Joan lived in Texas and worked for Sears.&nbsp; Upon moving to Hutchinson, she transferred to the Hutchinson Sears store and retired with many years of service.&nbsp; Joan then went to work for Doskocil Foods, South Hutchinson, and retired with over 10 years of service.&nbsp; In order to stay active after retirement, she began working part-time at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She lived in Hutchinson most of her life and then moved back to Texas five years ago, to be with her family.Joan was an active member of First Assembly of God Church, Hutchinson, and Mount Olivet Worship Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She had a servant’s heart and enjoyed being involved in the life of the church, from teaching Sunday School, to serving on various committees and boards, singing in the choir, and playing the piano.&nbsp; Joan loved her family, sharing her faith, and serving her Savior.&nbsp;On November 27, 1948, Joan married Merle Dean Black, Sr., in Harrison, AR.&nbsp; They shared over 61 years of marriage, prior to his death on May 30, 2010.She is survived by:&nbsp; sons, Mark Eugene (Linda) Black of Andover, and Merle Dean (Cindy) Black, Jr. of Watagua, TX; grandchildren, Misty Farrell, Troy Black, Corey Black, and Brandon (April) Black; great-grandchildren, Alyssa McReynolds and Aiden Black; niece, Connie King; and nephew, Kurt Starks.Joan was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husband; brothers, Jackie Starks and John Starks, Jr.; sister, Carolee Redenbaugh; and nephews, Randy Wilkes and Kevin Starks.Funeral service will be 10am Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Pastor John Chastain and Chaplain Luanne Haddaway officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to service time on Saturday, with the family present at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. &nbsp; Barry Lynn Henry, 46, of Canton, passed away suddenly at 3:25 a.m., Thursday, August 19th, 2021, at his home in rural Canton. Barry was born in Dodge City, Kansas on December 16, 1974. Barry is the son of Leta Irene (Rule) and Gary Jerome Henry. Barry attended Dodge City grade schools and graduated from Dodge City High School, Dodge City. He then attended and graduated from Tulsa Welding School, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Through the years Barry worked as a welder, pipefitter, and boilermaker for American Boiler and Mechanical, Salina and was currently employed at CHS of McPherson as a pipefitter. Barry Lynn Henry was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Aitken on June 2, 2007 in McPherson. This union brought together Barry's son, Quentin and Sarah's daughters, Silas and Asa. The family established their first home together in McPherson. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children, Wyatt, Levi, and Jovey. In May of 2014 the family fulfilled their dream of moving out to the country. Barry enjoyed cooking and working in his shop. He loved being outside, was very good working with his hands, and renovating their homes. Barry enjoyed welding projects working with wrought iron. He also enjoyed construction projects and carpentry. His greatest love was spending time with his family and helping his children with their rodeo events and other activities. In his younger years, Barry loved dirt bike riding and camping. She enjoyed baking, teaching arts and crafts, collecting glassware, traveling and walking in the park.&nbsp; She never met a stranger and loved helping her family and friends whenever she could.&nbsp; She dedicated her life to her family and to working with children to give them the best and happiest life possible regardless of their circumstances.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sandy in 2000 and an infant brother, Michael. Dennis passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at the age of 66 years old. Rosary and Funeral Service will be held Monday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Merlin Kieffer officiating at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home in Herington. Marilyn’s life began on October 1, 1936, the only child and daughter of William and Marie (Gray) Reffner in Wichita. She graduated from Whitewater High Class of 1954 and married Victor Hiebert on June 13, 1957, at the Federated Church in Whitewater.

Marilyn worked at Friendly Acres in Newton, and then at Wheat State Manor for 35 years in laundry. She was a member of Federated Church. She loved her family and enjoyed sewing, baking anything sweet, puzzles, card games and dominos. Her loving family includes her, sons and their wives, Vic and Penny Hiebert of Park City, Kansas, Dave and Lesa Hiebert of Haysville; granddaughters, Jennifer (Aaron) Archer of Whitewater, Sheridan Hiebert; five step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Vic in 2016. Marilyn passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at the age of 84 years old. Her family will gather with friends on Tuesday, August 17, from 10-11:00 a.m. with her funeral following at 11:00 both at Federated Church, 703 E. Central, Whitewater. She will be interred by her husband in Whitewater Cemetery.

He worked at Agco for 13 years as a Quality Assurance Technician. He also worked in construction for 30 years and then owned and operated his own construction company for 20 years. He enjoyed woodworking and going to the coffee clutch in Lehigh. He had an Alpaca farm, played softball and basketball in high school, and donated his time to help build the American Legion Building in Hillsboro. His loving family includes his children, Jennifer Dies of Newton, Ronald Lee Dies Jr (Denaye) of Lehigh, Heather Lengerich (Matt) of Draper, Utah, Andrew Dies of Nacogdoches, Texas, Billy (Robin) Dies and David Lofton (Angel) all of Hillsboro; sister, Carol Wilkening of Lehigh; brother, Robert Dies; grandchildren, Wyatt Dies, Samantha Lengerich, Tyler Lengerich, Mason Lofton, Tyler Lofton and many nieces and nephews. Diann Marie Wainwright, 38, of Alta Vista, Kansas, died August 8, 2021 at the Morris County Hospital.

Diann was born on October 23, 1982 the daughter of Dennis Wainwright and Wanda (Wilkerson) Timm. She was born at the Morris County Hospital, although her initial birth announcement listed her as being born at courthouse. Diann was a 2001 graduate of Council Grove High School. While in high school, she was a member of FCCLA, participating in contests and trips to Iowa. She was a 10 year member of Santa Fe Trail 4-H Club in Morris County. Her projects included clothing, dog, cat, rabbits, poultry, and her favorite was the horse project. Over the years Diann enjoyed showing horses in a variety of 4-H and Eastern Kansas Horseman Association shows. One of her showing highlights was showing at the American Royal. Diann’s career in the hospitality industry led her to general manager position at Wendy’s in Manhattan. After guiding her employees and store through a major renovation; out of 49 Wendy’s stores, they achieved ranking in the top 5. Diann was a member of the First Baptist church of Council Grove, and was active in the youth group throughout high school. In addition to her horses and house pets, Diann thoroughly enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. She also loved the years she lived in St Louis. She loved to travel see new things and meet new people. Although she was not a fan of yardwork, she did enjoy hosting backyard parties for family and friends. Diann was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Edgar and Mary Lou Wainwright and Ted and Evelyn Wilkerson. She is survived by her father Dennis Wainwright, Alta Vista; mother Wanda Timm (Russell), Council Grove; sister Darci Wainwright, Alta Vista; brother Daniel Wainwright (Lisa), Council Grove; niece Mandy Jo; nephew Augustus; step-son Sean McGovern LaGrange, NC; stepdaughter Patricia McGovern-Cosentino, Grand Junction, Co; step grandchildren: Jackson McGovern and Parker McGovern-Leach; significant other Melvin Sanford; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Diann Marie Wainwright |1982-2021|

Vanessa Dawn Baldwin, 48, of Moundridge, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2021.&nbsp; She was born November 29, 1972, in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Tracy Dillman.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at Hesston College.&nbsp; Vanessa was a PRN at Newton Medical Center and Comfort Care in Newton.

Vanessa enjoyed quilting and cooking for family in her spare time.&nbsp; Above all, she loved spending time with her granddaughters and her animals.

Vanessa was united in marriage to Larry Wayne Baldwin on October 31, 2019 in McPherson.&nbsp; He survives at their residence.

Other survivors include her sons, Adrian Carson of Moundridge, and Gabriel “Gabe” Cervantes of Wichita; daughter, Dominique Woods of Wichita; sisters, Trianna (Keith) Cowden of Walton, and Nicole Duffman of Kansas City, MO; brother, Phillip (Jessica) Duffman of Raymore, MO; five grandchildren, Mia, Lucy and Nadiyah Cervantes, and Christy and Olivia Farley; Larry’s parents, Robert E. and Linda Baldwin of Moundridge; sister-in-law, Julie Baldwin of Chanute; and brother-in-law, John (Lisa) Baldwin of Plains.

Vanessa was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Mary Josephine and Victor White, Sr.; maternal grandparents, May Anna and Roy Dillman; and uncle, Walter White.

Cremation is planned with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.&nbsp;

Vanessa Dawn Baldwin, 48, of Moundridge, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2021.&nbsp; She was born November 29, 1972, in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Tracy Dillman.She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at Hesston College.&nbsp; Vanessa was a PRN at Newton Medical Center and Comfort Care in Newton.Vanessa enjoyed quilting and cooking for family in her spare time.&nbsp; Above all, she loved spending time with her granddaughters and her animals.Vanessa was united in marriage to Larry Wayne Baldwin on October 31, 2019 in McPherson.&nbsp; He survives at their residence.Other survivors include her sons, Adrian Carson of Moundridge, and Gabriel “Gabe” Cervantes of Wichita; daughter, Dominique Woods of Wichita; sisters, Trianna (Keith) Cowden of Walton, and Nicole Duffman of Kansas City, MO; brother, Phillip (Jessica) Duffman of Raymore, MO; five grandchildren, Mia, Lucy and Nadiyah Cervantes, and Christy and Olivia Farley; Larry’s parents, Robert E. and Linda Baldwin of Moundridge; sister-in-law, Julie Baldwin of Chanute; and brother-in-law, John (Lisa) Baldwin of Plains.Vanessa was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Mary Josephine and Victor White, Sr.; maternal grandparents, May Anna and Roy Dillman; and uncle, Walter White.Cremation is planned with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.&nbsp;

Eventually they made their home in Abilene, Kansas where together, they shared a love and passion for animals; caring for dogs, miniature horses, mammoth and miniature donkeys, several exotic birds, and Troy’s beloved South American mountain lion, Sherry, who he cherished for 17 years. Hendrick (Henry) Pyl, 96, died at Showalter Villa on August 18, 2021, surrounded by his family.

He was born March 1, 1925, in the Friesland province of Grou in the Netherlands, the son of Jelke and Aaltje (Postumi) Pyl.

During World War II Henry was part of an underground newton of French, Dutch and Belgian resistance against the Nazis. The organization’s goal was to save lives and smuggle documents. After the war, Pyl served for five years with the Dutch Army.

In 1960, Henry, his wife Annie, and their children came to the United States, eventually settling in Newton.

For 30 years Henry and Annie ran Nu-Way Janitorial. Henry also owned a business building garages for two years, was part of the janitorial and maintenance staff at Axtell Clinic, and was a foreman with American Coach.

Henry is survived by his children, Jelke (Cindy) Pyl and Alie Gadd; and 7 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jelke and Aaltje Pyl; wife, Antje (Annie) Bouma Pyl; daughter and son-in-law, Geesje and Terry Goodwin; 2 brothers and 4 sisters.

A visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 22, at Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main, in Newton. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 23, also at the funeral home. Following the service, a graveside service will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Mary Lou Schmidt, 90, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, surrounded by family at Angel Arms Assisted Living, McPherson. She worked at Winslow Accounting as a bookkeeper, B.W. Jones &amp; Sons School Bus Service where she was a driver and dispatcher, and for Sterling Drug on the production line.

Mary Lou was born on December 8, 1930, in Meade, KS, the daughter of Loren Herbert and Ola Edmona (Taylor) Stratton. She graduated from St. John (KS) High School in 1948. On December 12, 1953, Mary Lou married Harvey H. Schmidt in Abilene, KS, and together they raised three children. Harvey preceded Mary Lou in death on May 22, 2013.

She was a member of First Church of God, Hutchinson.

Survivors include: three children, Linda Gilham (Dan) of Belle Plains, KS, Terry Schmidt (Debra) of Lawrence, KS, and Tim Schmidt (Roxanne) of McPherson, KS; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces &amp; nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, Edgar, Herb, and Harold Stratton.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 28, at McPherson Cemetery.

Patricia Lynn Frazier, 86, died July 10 at the Cedars care facility in McPherson. Pat was a friend of many, a talented businesswoman, loyal member of the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Parish, and an example of both warmth and grit to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She shared most of her life’s adventures with her husband, Louie, whom she was married to for 64 years before his death in 2016. One of her favorite sayings conveyed the wisdom of humility – “Pride Goeth Before a Fall.” She was born Patricia Kingsbury in 1933, the first child in a family with pioneer heritage in Dickinson County, Kansas. She grew up on the farm near Carlton that her great grandparents had homesteaded in 1870, and drove grain trucks to the elevators in Elmo and Carlton well before she was old enough to apply for a driver’s license. Her early years coincided with the depths of the Great Depression. When her sister Joan died while still a toddler, the family couldn’t afford a burial plot so Joan was buried in a spot donated by relatives in a nearby town. Besides farming, her father also was a pianist who passed along his love of music to her. She started on piano and blossomed into a saxophone player who graced the band at Kansas State University for two years. She continued with piano for many years, teaching piano lessons in McPherson, and introducing music to her children via the piano, though all three fled the piano bench as soon as they were old enough to wriggle away to other instruments. She entered K-State the same month she turned 17, and earned her teacher’s certificate in 22 months. In 1952, as she turned 19, she got her first teacher’s contract earning $300 a month (and $2 for every county and state teacher’s meeting she attended). She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Carlton, where she claimed that her most ornery student was her little brother, Steve. Then she was promoted to principal of a two-room school in Hope. As she began her teaching career, she married her boyfriend Louie, whom she had met while in high school at Chapman. Louie worked for the railroad, then later went to work for the Safeway grocery chain. Safeway sent the young couple to Arkansas City, Emporia and Anthony before they landed in McPherson in 1959, where they moved into a home in the then-new Eastmoor Addition. In McPherson, Pat began her 60-year membership in St. Joseph’s parish, including many years involvement with the Altar Society. She also was a member of PEO, a Cub Scout den mother, and a diligent and fearsome competitor in many bridge clubs. Weekends were split between time at her parents’ farm – she helped with wheat harvest well into the 1980’s – or on hobbies that included golf, boating, and enjoying RV life at the lake. She studied to become certified as a Master Gardener by K-State Extension Service, and helped organize garden events in McPherson. Pat was a substitute teacher in McPherson in the early 1960’s, and in the mid-1960’s began her financial services career with a job at Farmers Alliance Insurance. She loved the challenge at Farmers Alliance, but was frustrated by the sense that her work was not as highly valued as the work of men doing the same job. At one point, when she believed she was being underpaid relative to her male peers, she went to her manager to ask for equal pay. Instead, she was told, “We don’t need to pay women the same as men because wives have husbands to support them and their family.” She was livid, and went home to tell her children, who benefited from that early lesson in workplace equity. On another occasion, she ranked first in a class to learn underwriting skills, but as the only woman in the class she was denied a plaque commemorating completion of the course. When she complained, she was given a Xerox copy of the plaque that the men had received, with her name scratched in by hand. Later, she helped open the local branch of Columbia Savings &amp; Loan, an Emporia-based S&amp;L, and remained branch manager and Vice President for several years. She also worked for a local insurance agency, before temporarily retiring. She unretired when Louie expanded his paint and home furnishings store on North Main Street, Frazier Interiors, and she remained Louie’s business partner and decorating specialist until they sold the store a decade ago. Louie and Pat instilled a love of adventure and historic curiosity in their children. They traveled by car to destinations like Florida, New Orleans, Colorado, Texas and Yellowstone Park -- long summer vacations that included visits to relatives, historic sites and natural landmarks. A feature of trips with Pat was her regular instructions to Louie to pull over and read any historic landmark sign that popped up along the roadside, just to make sure her kids learned a tiny bit of history as they roamed (In later years, she denied responsibility for imprinting the story on her children that Coronado himself built the picnic castle atop Coronado Heights). She helped keep expenses down by lugging along a large electric skillet to cook fried Spam sandwiches in the motel room at night. Pat and Louie continued to travel into their late 70’s, visiting furniture shows, the son who started a new life in Washington DC, and the other son who lured them abroad, to his temporary homes in Mexico City and London. In 2009, Pat fought and won a harrowing, life-threatening battle against a cerebral aneurysm, resulting in emergency surgery and months in recovery. Despite doubts by doctors she would survive, she emerged strong, witty, loving and energetic, prepared for a final decade of life enjoying her friends, many hands of bridge, and a growing family. After years of gentle persuasion, she also helped Louie convert to Catholicism in the final years of his life, which gave them both great joy as he helped contribute to the St. Joseph’s community. She slowed down moderately after Louie’s death in 2016, but continued to enjoy life until her health took a sharp turn for the worse in the past several weeks as her Alzheimer’s quickly advanced. In the final days of her life, one topic of conversation that seemed to bring her joy was tales of wheat harvests past and present, the impact of weather forecasts on crop yields, and the challenges of hustling a cold six-pack of Coors out to the combine before it would grow warm in the late June heat. She is survived by three children: Greg Frazier, Washington, D.C.; Steve Frazier and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Leech, Mercer Island, Washington; and Marcia Frazier-Boos, Wichita. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jonathan Frazier, Seattle; Dustin Frazier, Wichita; Rosalie Frazier, New York City; and Ceceilia Frazier, of Washington D.C. Larry Nisly, 78, of Hutchinson, died August 18, 2021, at his home. He was born September 27, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Edward D. and Elizabeth (Yoder) Nisly.

Larry was the owner and operator of Midwest Farm and Dairy Supply for 46 years. He was a member of Cedar Crest Amish Mennonite Church, where he served with steady faithfulness on various committees. Larry valued education; he served as board member of Pilgrim Christian School for twenty-five years, and as high school administrator for much of that time. He also served eight years on the board of Prairie View Mental Health in Newton. Larry enjoyed singing and gardening. He valued relationships, and treasured times with his grandchildren. On June 4, 1967, Larry married Barbara Miller, in Hutchinson. She survives.

Larry Nisly, 78, of Hutchinson, died August 18, 2021, at his home. He was born September 27, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Edward D. and Elizabeth (Yoder) Nisly.Larry was the owner and operator of Midwest Farm and Dairy Supply for 46 years. He was a member of Cedar Crest Amish Mennonite Church, where he served with steady faithfulness on various committees. Larry valued education; he served as board member of Pilgrim Christian School for twenty-five years, and as high school administrator for much of that time. He also served eight years on the board of Prairie View Mental Health in Newton. Larry enjoyed singing and gardening. He valued relationships, and treasured times with his grandchildren. He was born April 13, 1995, in Wichita the son of Orrin and Renee Fairchild Westerman.&nbsp; A longtime resident of Kingman, he was a farm laborer.

Ora Faye Vaughn, 95, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away August 17, 2021 at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. 

She was born March 9, 1926 in Augusta, Kansas, the daughter of Homer and Clara Corral Thomas. Ora graduated from Chase High School, Chase, Kansas, with the class of 1944. She has resided in Lyons since 1976, formerly of Midland, Texas. Ora cleaned houses and was a housewife. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting and even made some of her own clothing. On June 20, 1947, Ora was united in marriage with Walter William Vaughn in McPherson, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 6, 2003. She is also preceded in death by her parents. Ora is survived by her son, Gary Vaughn of Lyons; and a cousin, Phillip Morris and wife Janice of Ponca City, OK. 

Graveside services will be at 1:00 P.M., Monday, August 23, 2021 at Springdale Cemetery, Chase, with Rev. Robert Friesen officiating. She worked for the Remington School District as a para-professional in 1987 and later became the secretary to the high school principal until retiring in 1994. She loved her family, and enjoyed her flowers, quilting, puzzles and mowing her yard. She was a member of the Remington Historical Society. Gable M Harrod Jr. (Marty),&nbsp;55, passed away at his home on August 15, 2021 in Bentley Kansas. He was born in Dodge City, to Gable and Elizabeth Harrod.

He enjoyed fishing, working on his truck and wood working. Yet, one of his greatest joys were family get togethers.

He is survived by his sisters Robin &amp; Robert Kroulik and Evelyn &amp; Fred Martin, all of Bentley; and many nieces, nephews and family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gable and Elizabeth Harrod, his brother &amp; sister-in-law Dallas and Donna Harrod, and great nephew Sam Kroulik.

Justin Robert Humphries, 27, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2021 at his home. He was born on December 9, 1993 in Dodge City to Jeffie Donald and Darla Kay (Rosenbaum) Humphries.

Justin worked as a chef at Legends for 2 years. He was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City. He enjoyed playing guitar, Nascar, Kansas City Chiefs, playing Playstation, karaoke, attending concerts and making people laugh.

He is survived by his father, Jeffie Humphries of Dodge City; mother, Darla Humphries of Pratt; brothers, Zachary (Shandrika) Bates of Horton and J.D. (Rosy) Humphries of Dodge City; sisters, Jammie Humphries of Dodge City and Myha Thorne of Columbus, Georgia; grandmothers, Bobbie Rosenbaum of Pratt and Marlene Humphries of Offerle; godmother, Jackie (Kurt) Allen of Dodge City; niece, Penelope Bates and Angelique Humphries; nephews, Matthew Dickson and Brady Mayer; and numerous aunts and uncles.
