Marie Joanne ‘Jo’ Hedrick, 90, died April 26, 2022, at Pleasant Hills in Hutchinson, KS. Jo was born May 7, 1931, in Ft. Dodge, IA, to Marie and Robert Lowrey.

She spent most of her childhood in Gowrie, IA, until moving to Kansas to attend KU School of Nursing. Jo became a registered nurse and met Ken who was attending KU medical school. The couple were married in 1953, and were married for 66 years. In 1960, Ken and Jo moved to Hutchinson where they raised three children.

Jo enjoyed golfing, playing tennis, snow skiing, knitting, and singing. She volunteered at the information desk at Hutchinson Hospital for many years, and was a member of Trinity UMC choir. Jo had a positive attitude and loved helping others. When Jo needed help herself managing her diabetes, she was blessed to have Susan McCauley and Morgan Rohr to assist her with excellent care and kindness for over 5 years. In addition, the family wishes to thank the staff at Pleasant Hills for the wonderful love and care provided to their mother over the past year.

Jo will be greatly missed by her friends and family. She is survived by: sister, Barbara Eder; brother, Leon (Joyce) Lowrey; and her children, Nancy (Kevin) Mullen of Wichita, KS, Max (Melanie) Hedrick of McKinney, TX, and Jane Hedrick of Tarpon Springs, FL; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Florence Barbara Knittig, 79, of McPherson, passed away at 11:40 p.m., Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 at McPherson Hospital. Barbara was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 29, 1942, a daughter of Harriett G. (Vertrees) and Lawrence Charles Kraft. Barbara attended the St. Louis elementary schools and graduated from St. Cecilia High School, St. Louis, Missouri. Later in life when she was in Kansas she attended nursing school where she received her LPN Certificate. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church McPherson. Barbara was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. While she was in Kansas she worked for the Bethesda Home as a nurses aide and later became a LPN. She then worked for the Cedars Health Care Center for several years before becoming a hospice nurse from which she retired. Barbara was a former 4-H Club Leader in St. Louis, fostered dogs for the McPherson County Humane Society, and was a member of the McPherson Saddle Club. Barbara enjoyed taking classes at the Hutchinson Kennel Club with her dogs, crocheting, knitting, sewing, was an avid reader and loved to share time with her family and friends. Barbara Kraft was united in marriage to Leroy William Knittig on July 11, 1964 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, St. Louis, Missouri. The young couple established their first home together in St. Louis. They were blessed with the birth of four children, three daughters, and a son, Valerie, Janice, Gail and Nicholas. In 1977 the family moved to Canton, Kansas because of a horse!. She is survived by her children, Valerie Cuthbertson and her husband Dale, of Canton, Janice Holderness and her husband Jim, of Canton, Gail Knittig, of Newton, and Nicholas Knittig, of Seagoville, Texas. Mary Cutting Glenn, 93, died April 27, 2022, at Legends Assisted Living. She was born August 11, 1928, in Hutchinson, to James and Rosa (Van Deusen) Clune.

On June 1, 1947, Mary married Charles E. Cutting. He died in 1989. On September 1, 1990, she married Alva Glenn. He died in 2013.

Mary was a member of Crossroads Christian Church.

Survivors include: her 5 children, Marilyn Eberhart (Tom), Kathy Denney (John), both of Hutchinson, Janet Evans (Danny) of Lanagan, MO, Randy Cutting (Kathy) of Hutchinson, Scott Cutting (Julie) of Olathe; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and a sister.

Alma “Colleen” Oller, 76, of Langdon, died April 27, 2022, at her home. She was born May 5, 1945, in Pratt, to William A. and Alma L. (Thornton) King.

Colleen graduated from Preston High School in 1962. She owned her own beauty shop, Oller’s Beauty Shop, in Partridge and then in Langdon, since 1974. Colleen was also a hairdresser at Hilltop Manor in Cunningham and owned the Dairy Bar in Turon from 1998-2006. She enjoyed reading and playing Bingo at the Moose Lodge.

On June 15, 1963, Colleen married Jerry L. Oller, in Iuka. He survives.

Also surviving are: her children, Dana Brack (Gene) of Turon, Darin Oller (Joanie) of Partridge, Dennis Oller (Gina) of Turon; grandchildren, Jerri Ehrlich (Bobbie), Katie Locke (Aaron), K.W. McCurry (Rhiannon), Logan McCurry (Heather), Dakota Oller (Jessica), Cheyenne Huffman (Chris), Jerry Lee Oller, Taylor Goble (Casey), Tarin Oller, Cara Clapper, Daisy Raburn, Jesse Clapper; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Delbert King (Janice) of Bartlesville, OK; and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sisters, Belle Christianson, Jean Carson; brothers, William King, Robert King, Stanley King, and Ed King.

Garrick was a 1985 graduate of Nickerson High School and worked as a grain elevator operator for ADM in Hutchinson. On October 27, 2017, he married Teresa Anzo, in Hutchinson. He attended Cross Point Church, Hutchinson.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Warren Tucker, 77, passed away April 22, 2022, at Diversicare of Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born June 14, 1944, in Garnett, KS, to Royal Ralph and Eleanor Louise (Jones) Tucker.

Tom was a graduate of Nickerson High School, Nickerson, KS.&nbsp; He was employed as an equipment operator by the Kansas Department of Transportation, retiring with over 39 years of service.

Tom loved getting his family and friends together so that he could have an excuse to fire up the smoker or grill for a tasty barbeque.&nbsp; He enjoyed camping and traveling the state of Kansas.&nbsp; Tom and Sarah had a goal of visiting every county in the state of Kansas with the intent of finding a place of interest to visit, or to have a meal at a local establishment.&nbsp; They were able to visit 75 of the 105 counties in Kansas together, and Sarah has plans to complete that shared goal in memory of Tom.

Tom is survived by:&nbsp; his partner of over 25 years, Sarah Willard of Hutchinson, KS; children, Dan Tucker and girlfriend Autumn of South Hutchinson, KS, Dallis Willard and partner Judy Leung of San Francisco, CA, and Diane Willard of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren, Alex Yott, Lexi Yott, Milo Willard, Margaret O’Neal, and Myranda McMillin; brother, Norman Tucker and wife Carolyn of Derby, KS; sisters-in law, Pam Tucker of Great Bend, KS, Marty Tucker of Denver, CO, and Niki Prince and husband Steven of Andover, KS; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Benedict “Benny” Theodore Ricke, 94, of Medicine Lodge, died Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at Attica Long Term Care, Attica. He was born on March 30, 1928 in Sharon, the son of Benedict Joseph Ricke and Mary Ann (Rausch) Ricke. On August 29, 1951, he married Elizabeth “Betty” D. (Becker) Ricke in St. Leo. She preceded him in death on December 22, 2018. Benny was a dairy and wheat farmer. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medicine Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and past member of AMPI Association. Surviving are four sons, Darrel (Judy) Ricke of Hutchinson; Roger (Alice) Ricke of Wichita; Duane (Pam) Ricke of Attica; and John (Tammy) Ricke of Mulvane; four daughters, Lana Kay (Tim) Baker of Amarillo, TX; Pat (Dave) Merz of Valley Center; Cheryl (Don) Grodecki of Lake Quivera; and Mary Beth (Gary) Chandler of Holcomb,; 22 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way and one great-great grandchild on the way; one sister, Marceline Simon of Stroud, OK. On January 4, 1964, he married Linda K. Long, in Pueblo, CO. She survives.

Patty graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1956, and later from Salt City Business College. She worked as an office administrator for Rainbow Bakery. Patty was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Hutchinson and loved to volunteer with the children, which she did for many years.

In 1981 she married Robert Kerns in Hutchinson. He passed away in 2005.

Katherine Marie Brown, 83, died April 25, 2022, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born January 21, 1939, in Sharon, the oldest daughter of Lester Eugene and Troye Frances (Hensley) Rose.

Katherine graduated from Whitewater High School in 1956, and Wichita Business College.&nbsp; She enjoyed volunteering in the community, and served on the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and Kansas Cosmosphere’s Board of Directors.&nbsp; Katherine served as secretary and treasurer for T&amp;E Oil Company, Inc., which she owned along with her husband, Shorty.&nbsp; She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.&nbsp; Katherine was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.&nbsp;

On April 15, 1956, Katherine married her high school sweetheart, Stanley Eugene “Shorty” Brown, in Wichita.&nbsp; He died February 12, 2018, after they shared almost 62 years of marriage.

Katherine is survived by: sons, Kevin Brown (Marina) of Hutchinson, and Kent Brown (Lori) of Wichita; sisters, Barbara Balzer (Keith) of Shawnee, and Connie Bogan (Phil) of Fort Worth, TX; four granddaughters, Kelsey Baker (Brandon) of Wichita, Dr. Aunya Cameron of Leawood, Courtney Scherzer (Nate), and Mischia Kirkpatrick (Sam), all of Fairway, KS; and great-grandchildren, Dune Cameron, Kennedy Baker, Roddie Cameron, Knowles Cameron, Camden Baker, and Finnegan Kirkpatrick.

Gary Hand, age 71, of Colwich, Kansas, passed away in his home on Thursday, April 21st, after an unexpected and rapidly progressing metastatic melanoma diagnosis. Gary was born on February 21st, 1951, to Leo and Dorothy Hand of Wichita.

After Gary graduated from Bishop Carroll Catholic HS, he went on to study for pharmacy school at Newman University before getting accepted into KU School of Pharmacy. After graduation in 1974, Gary worked as a pharmacist for 44 years, most of which was spent as owner of Preston Socora Pharmacy. He was always dedicated to providing top notch service and care for his customers, often going into the store after hours or on the weekends to fill prescriptions.

Gary was married to his wife, Natalie Bartel of North Newton, in June 1990, and they went on to have two children, Jordan and Rachel. Gary entered retirement in 2018 and spent his time with family, grandchildren, and selling Medicare part time with LT Care Solutions. Gary was proceeded in death by his mother Dorothy Hand, father Leo Hand, and brother Michael Hand. He is survived by wife Natalie Hand of Wichita; children Jordan (Riann) Hand and 2 grandchildren of Wichita, Rachel Hand of Wichita; sisters Judy (Bruce) Rozek of Houston, TX, Mary Herridge of Wichita, and Cindy (Dan) Rohr of Sedgwick.

James Lee Porter, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022. He was born in Newton, August 11, 1977 to Mary Elizabeth&nbsp;(Daniels)&nbsp;Porter&nbsp; and the late Gerald Whisler Junior.&nbsp;&nbsp;He lived in Sedgwick early in life, yet grew up in Valley Center, where he started painting cars in his mom’s garage at age 14.&nbsp; He attended schools in both Sedgwick and Valley Center.

James was the owner of a used car dealership which he ran for almost 20 years.&nbsp; He always had a heart of gold helping the poor, the homeless, and especially economically disadvantaged. He once got a piece of mail by mistake and used it to help reunite two old war buddies from 50 years ago. He was a very talented car painter and mechanic. He was also a very talented and gifted artist. He was an avid pilot with a great love to fly. He also loved antiques. He was very close to his dogs. His absolute greatest love was to be with his children and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father, Gerald Whisler Junior and his grandparents Ella Mae Whisler, and Robert and Norma Daniels.

James is survived by his mom, Mary Porter, his adoptive dad, Michael C Porter; his fiance, Madi Hernandez of Wichita; his brother Chris Porter, of Valley Center; his children Ashley, Michael, Elizabeth, Jasmine, and Storm of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; grandfather Gerald L Whisler, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Michael Kent McMurray, 72, of McPherson, passed away Friday, April 22nd 2022, at his home. Mike was born in McPherson, on July 22, 1949, a son of Mildred "Millie" Louise (Doerksen) and Russell Eugene McMurray. Mike attended and graduated from Canton High School, Canton, Kansas. He then attended Bethany College Lindsborg, until his enlistment into the United States Army. He honorably served in the U.S. Army with the 25th Infantry Division 65th Engineer's Battalion, Company C during the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, 2 Over-seas Bars, 3 Camp X 120. Michael Kent McMurray was united in marriage to Lori Ann Ediger on February 21, 1976 at McPherson. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson. They were blessed with the birth of two children, one son and one daughter, Derek and Katie. Through the years Mike worked for American Farm Supply as a Service Technician and then started with N.C.R.A. in 1983 and worked in Maintenance as a Pipefitter, Rigger, and Insulator prior to his retirement in 2011. Mike was a member of the American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 both of McPherson. Mike enjoyed reading, golfing, spending time with his family especially his grandkids, socializing with his friends, fishing, hunting, and loved a good cocktail. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of over 46 years, Lori McMurray, of McPherson; his children, Derek McMurray and his wife Mary Shannon, of Kansas City, Missouri and Katie Anderson and husband Travis, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his brothers, Craig McMurray and wife Frankie, of Indian Wells, California; brother Brent McMurray, of McPherson; and Kelly McMurray, of Los Angeles, California; his brother-in-law, James Ediger of Papillion, Nebraska; his six grandchildren, Sierra Anderson , Cora Anderson, Blake Anderson, Abbigail Anderson, Garrett McMurray and Elliot McMurray; his 1 great-granddaughter, Reyna Parra-Anderson; other relatives and a host of friends. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of over 46 years, Lori McMurray, of McPherson; his children, Derek McMurray and his wife Mary Shannon, of Kansas City, Missouri and Katie Anderson and husband Travis, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his brothers, Craig McMurray and wife Frankie, of Indian Wells, California; brother Brent McMurray, of McPherson; and Kelly McMurray, of Los Angeles, California; his brother-in-law, James Ediger of Papillion, Nebraska; his six grandchildren, Sierra Anderson , Cora Anderson, Blake Anderson, Abbigail Anderson, Garrett McMurray and Elliot McMurray; his 1 great-granddaughter, Reyna Parra-Anderson; other relatives and a host of friends. Carol Jean Moulton, 86, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Bethany Home in Lindsborg. Carol was born November 1, 1935 in Ponca City, OK to the late Alvin R. "Pete" and the late Ruby I. "Inez" (Adams) Schambron. She married C.R Moulton on August 19, 1956 in Marion.

Carol graduated from Marion High School before attending college at St. Mary’s of the Plains in Dodge City. She worked as an LPN at St. Luke Hospital in Marion and at Asbury Hospital in Salina.  Later she worked at McCoy’s Christian Book store. She was an active member of Emmanuel Foursquare Church in Salina, where she enjoyed helping in the kitchen with meals.

Survivors include her husband: C.R. Moulton; daughters: Mary Kersey (Neal) of Bennington; Jane Robertson (Jon) of Salina; and Donna Moulton of Topeka; son: John Moulton (Jean), of Salina; Dana Hill, of Salina, who was like a daughter to her; as well as 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Virginia E. Roman, 95, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Hospice House. She was born March 17, 1927, in Hutchinson, to Mauro and Pauline Garcia.

Virginia attended schools in Hutchinson, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1945, and later graduated from Salt City Business College. She worked for various attorney’s in the Hutchinson area before working for and retiring from Continental Telephone Company. After retirement, Virginia worked part-time for First Federal Savings and Loan for 11 years.

On August 16, 1952, she married Joe Angel Roman Jr. He passed away on March 3, 1969. Virginia later married Anselmo Jaramillo on December 2, 1981, they later divorced.

She was an avid KU basketball fan and had special love for Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors (and thought Lebron James was a bit overrated). Virginia spent most of her free time enjoying the company of her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virginia liked to work in her rock garden, Mexican music, singing, dancing, and she loved her dogs.&nbsp;

Bob’s life began on February 21, 1937, in Marion. He was the son of Godfrey and Mary (Vlk) Jirak. He was baptized at St. John Nepomucene Church by Father John Skelnar. 

Bob attended primary school in Pilsen and served for Father Emil Kapaun in Pilsen. Bob was a 1955 graduate of Lincolnville High School. He served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserve from 1959 until 1965. 

Bob was united in marriage to Beverly Bredemeier on May 5, 1962, in Pilsen. He worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation from 1957 – 1993, and worked on the construction of the Kansas Turnpike, and later in Topeka and Marion KDOT, retiring with 36 years of service. Bob was a faithful parishioner of Holy Family Parish, spending a part of nearly every day at the church. He kept busy by refurbishing fishing rods and working on lawn equipment and did some house painting after retirement. Bob also enjoyed a good flea market or garage sale. 

He is survived by his loving family including his wife of nearly  60 years Beverly Jirak of Marion; sons Kevin (Jayme) Jirak of Marion; Timothy Jirak of Hillsboro; and Rodney (Shelly) Jirak of Hutchison; grandchildren Hayley, Dylan, Reagan, Tessa, Cooper, Cassidy, Kaley, and Shelby; great grandson Beau and his siblings Barbara Reznicek of Rogers, AR, and Mary Jane (Walt) Lesher of Lawrence. Bob passed away on Monday April 25th at NMC Health in Newton. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Joseph Jirak.

his home in Nickerson.&nbsp; He was born
September 2, 1953 in Crawford County, PA, the son of Roy and Shirley Jeanne

Kit enjoyed many hobbies like fishing and working in his shop.
He worked on pipelines and was a truck driver for many years.

Max G. Bussard, 77, passed away April 19, 2022, at Park West Plaza Manor, Wichita.&nbsp; He was born June 14, 1944, in Mulhall, OK, to Thomas Vincent and Charlottie Verlene (Dick) Bussard.

Max was a 1963 graduate of Fairfield High School, Langdon, KS.&nbsp; He worked at Jackson Ice Cream and Dairy, Hutchinson, as a maintenance engineer, retiring with over 32 years of service.

On August 24, 1985, Max married DiAnn Marie (Shuler) Gibbs.&nbsp; They shared over 36 years of marriage.

He was a wonderful husband, father (dad), grandpa, and great-grandpa. Max always made time for family and friends.&nbsp; If someone needed help, he was usually there.&nbsp; Max built or rebuilt sand rails, Volkswagen Beetles, antique tractor, and a lawnmower tractor.&nbsp; He was a collector of things that could be used for parts or rebuilt.&nbsp; If he wasn’t in his garage, he was in a neighbor’s garage working on an engine of some sort.&nbsp; The family would call Max if something needed fixed.&nbsp; He was always ready to help any of them.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, DiAnn Bussard of Hutchinson; children, Tammy Dudley and husband Wayne of Tulsa, OK; Timothy Bussard and wife Tonya of Wichita; Terry Bussard and wife Tracy of Park City; Troy Bussard and wife Shauna of Wichita; and Randall Gibbs and wife Allicia of Hutchinson; nineteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Darold Bussard, and Willis Doggett and wife Susie; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and Carolyn Woosley, mother of Tammy, Timothy, Terry, and Troy.

Jake was born on December 1, 1936, at Camp 45, Chihuahua, Mexico to Jacob H. and Lena (Koehn) Goertzen.&nbsp; On September 25, 1960, Jake was united in marriage to Anne Louise Nikkel in Inman.&nbsp;

He was a member of Zion Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Inman.

Survivors include: his wife, Anne; five children, Sandra (Leonard) Nightingale of Trumann, AR; Wanda (Chris) Koehn of Hume, MO; Luanne (Merle) Ensz of Inman; Lance (Karlene) Goertzen of Inman; and June (Brian) Schmidt of Trumann, AR; a foster daughter, Vonnie (Jamie) Cordell of Wichita; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Elizabeth Becker of Moundridge; Cornelius (Verla) Goertzen of Mortons Gap, KY; Herman (Jewel) Goertzen of Inman; and David (Jolene) Goertzen of Lakin; sisters-in-law, Verna Goertzen of Barron, WI; and Grace (Loren) Wiebe of Almena, WI; and brother-in-law, James (Susanna) Nikkel of Pipestone, MN.

Pat enjoyed shopping, traveling, cooking, scrap booking and spending time with her friends and family. Patricia was united in marriage to Terry Wendt in McPherson, where the young couple established their first home together. They were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Traci. She is survived by her daughter Traci Atkinson and her husband Neil, of Hutchinson, Kansas and her significant other Jim Fendt, of McPherson, Kansas. She is also survived by her grandson, Connor Sullivan. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Vickie Burton and her grandson Ian Sullivan. Rose A. Burditt, 57, passed away April 16, 2022 in Wichita, KS.&nbsp; She was born September 16, 1964 in Wichita, the daughter of Charles II and Irene (Batolla) Burditt. Rose worked as a warehouse manager for a number of years.&nbsp; She enjoyed reading. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Charles Burditt III, Bruce Burditt and Shawn Burditt. Survivors include her two sons, Jeremy O’Neal and Justin O’Neal; two sisters, Loretta Spielman and Christy Burditt and a granddaughter, Audrina O’Neal. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson.&nbsp; &nbsp;
