Firefighters responded to a large outside fire early Tuesday morning at the Hutchinson landfill, where burning debris in a designated disposal pit prompted an hours-long operation involving both fire crews and landfill personnel.

The Hutchinson Fire Department was dispatched at 2:38 a.m. to the landfill area for a report of a possible fire. Upon arrival, crews confirmed a working fire in what is known as the “Pit,” an area used for dumping waste. The initial fire covered an estimated area of 200 feet by 300 feet, according to a department news release.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Hutchinson Fire Department also issued a reminder to residents about the dangers of improperly disposing of lithium-ion batteries, which are increasingly common in household electronics.

“With the increase in lithium-ion batteries in our households, they need to be disposed of properly,” the department said in a statement. “Please locate your closest lithium-ion battery recycling drop-off location and dispose of them there instead of in your household waste containers.”

The Kansas Highway Patrol is warning the public about a fraudulent text message circulating across the state that falsely claims to be selling discounted shirts in support of the agency.

Officials say the message includes a suspicious link and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Kansas Highway Patrol. The texts are part of a “smishing” scam — a phishing attempt delivered via SMS — designed to trick recipients into revealing personal information.

Authorities urge anyone who receives such a message not to click the link.&nbsp;

"The Kansas Highway Patrol does not send unsolicited text messages and does not sell merchandise online," the agency said in a statement Monday.

Residents who receive similar messages are encouraged to report them to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at <a href="http://www.ic3.gov">www.ic3.gov</a> to help authorities track and stop the scam.

The Kansas Department of Revenue is excited to announce that the popular blackout-style license plates will soon be coming to Kansas vehicles. Beginning July 1, 2025, this highly anticipated new plate design will be available to Kansas drivers to purchase from their local county treasurer's office.  

“I’m always happy to listen to my constituents about issues that matter to them,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “By introducing the blackout license plate style, we are giving Kansans more options on the road while still adhering to safe license plate requirements.”

Designed with an all-black background and sharp white lettering, the blackout plate adds a sleek and stylish plate design to the selection of distinctive license plates. The introduction of this plate design is in response to the increasing interest from Kansans in having a blackout-style plate option for their vehicles.

“The blackout plate design has proven to be very popular in surrounding states, and we’ve had many Kansans ask for it to come to Kansas,” said Division of Vehicles Director Deann Williams. “We’ve heard them loud and clear, and we are very excited to bring this highly requested plate design to Kansas vehicles this year.”

Blackout plates will be available for standard passenger vehicles and motorcycles. The cost breakdown is as follows: • One-time plate fee: $40 • Annual royalty fee: $50 • Personalization fee: $45.50 (optional)

Black-out license plates coming to Kansas 

The Cosmosphere’s popular “Coffee at the Cosmo” series returns this Thursday at 9 a.m. with a special program dedicated to the legacy of the space shuttle.

Titled Coffee at the Cosmo: Legacy of the Space Shuttle, this month’s event will be held virtually via Zoom, allowing attendees to join from anywhere. The panel features a distinguished lineup of voices with deep ties to space exploration and storytelling.

Retired NASA astronaut Don Thomas, a veteran of four shuttle missions, will lead the panel, reflecting on the impact and legacy of the shuttle program. Thomas flew aboard Columbia and Discovery between 1994 and 1997.

Joining Thomas will be Bruce McCandless III, the son of famed shuttle astronaut Bruce McCandless II, who was the first human to fly untethered in space using the Manned Maneuvering Unit. Also on the panel is Bruce McCandless II himself—represented through discussion of his life and legacy by his son—as well as author Emily Carney, whose book Starbound explores the culture and community of spaceflight enthusiasts. Carney is also co-host of the Space and Things podcast.

The event marks a shift from the typical in-person format to a digital one, creating broader access while maintaining the intimate, educational atmosphere the program is known for. While the panel will take place online, local guests who attend in person at the Cosmosphere can still enjoy complimentary coffee and snacks.

“This one’s special,” said Sherry Treece, a Cosmosphere spokesperson. “We’re talking about the space shuttle era that many of us grew up with—Discovery, Challenger, Endeavour—and how that’s transitioned into today’s Artemis generation. It’s a great opportunity to hear stories from people who lived that history.”

 Sydney Fountain, instructor of psychology at Hutchinson Community College, has been named the 2024-25 Dragon Educator of the Year.

The honor, awarded annually by the HutchCC Student Government Association, recognizes outstanding teaching and student engagement across all academic areas. Students nominate instructors for the award, followed by a selection process that includes personal interviews conducted by SGA members.

Fountain, who received the award during the college’s commencement ceremony on May 9, joined HutchCC in 2021. She teaches General Psychology and Abnormal Psychology.

Students praised Fountain for her dedication to their academic and personal success.

“She really cares about our wellbeing as well as our education,” one student wrote in a nomination. Another noted, “Mrs. Fountain is an amazing professor. She creates a great environment to learn in by making sure students are engaged and are understanding the concepts of each lesson.”

Fountain earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Southwestern College and her Masters degree in Psychology from Stephen F. Austin University.

RICE COUNTY—Law enforcement in Rice County are sharing details of a violent rollover accident that could have been tragic.

On Saturday. night,&nbsp;deputies responded to a rollover crash involving a 16-year-old driver on Avenue N between 13th and 14th Roads in rural Rice County, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office. The teen had just left an underage drinking party. "Looking at the vehicle, it’s clear—this young man is incredibly lucky to be alive."

"We understand that teens will make mistakes. It’s part of growing up. But some mistakes carry life-altering consequences. That’s why we have a duty not only to respond, but to hold people accountable.

"We're glad on Mother's Day that this mother doesn't have to remember this day as the day she lost her child year after year. We will be pursuing charges related to this crash."

"We will also be holding the adults responsible for hosting and allowing underage drinking to occur on their property.This isn’t about being harsh—it’s about protecting lives. Because the next time, it might not be a crash with a lucky ending. It might be a call no parent ever wants to get and a notification no deputy wants to give."

The spirit of the Old West is set to ride again as the 63rd annual Abbyville Frontier Days Rodeo kicks off Thursday, May 15, with three days of family-friendly entertainment, rodeo action, and community tradition.

63rd Annual Abbyville Frontier Days Rodeo starts Thursday 

HESSTON, Kan. — Fire crews responded Friday afternoon to a commercial fire alarm in the 300 block of South College Drive and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a classroom building at Hesston College.

Hesston Fire/EMS was dispatched at approximately 3:55 p.m. and arrived on scene to find smoke and fire showing from the roof and windows on the northwest corner of the structure. Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack and located the fire in a chemistry lab. The blaze was quickly brought under control, and fire damage was contained to the lab.

Although the fire was limited to one room, officials reported widespread smoke damage throughout the building. No injuries were reported among civilians or emergency personnel.

Crews remained on site for an extensive overhaul and assisted the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office in the investigation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Reno County Health Department are confirming a positive case of measles in a Reno County resident. Public Health officials are monitoring the case during their recovery. No additional details will be released to protect patient privacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This case is not associated with any of the U.S. measles outbreaks and does not represent community transmission in Reno County. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently defining an outbreak of measles as three (3) or more related cases. KDHE and the Reno County Health Department are actively notifying individuals who were potentially exposed to this person while they were infectious. Additionally, public health is informing the public of a possible exposure so that the public may take appropriate steps to protect their health and limit the spread of measles. The public’s risk of exposure to measles is limited only to the location, date, and times below.  &nbsp; &nbsp;

The measles virus can stay in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Because the measles virus is highly contagious, anyone who visited the Hutchinson Public Library at the date and times listed above may have been exposed to measles and should take the following steps:  &nbsp;

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus. It spreads easily when an infected person talks, sneezes or coughs. People who are not vaccinated or lack immunity are especially at risk of becoming infected. Symptoms of measles typically begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Three to five days after symptoms begin, a skin rash develops and usually starts on the face and spreads down to the neck, trunk, arms and legs. &nbsp;

The best way to prevent measles is to get the MMR vaccine. If you have had measles or have been vaccinated, your risk of contracting the disease is very low. However, a few people (about three out of 100) can still get measles even after two MMR vaccine doses if they are near someone who is sick. &nbsp;

Adopt a Furry Friend: Saltine Cracker 

Pratt Regional Medical Center is facing a critical financial crisis, hospital officials said this week, prompting a new effort to collect millions in unpaid patient balances.

In a Facebook post, PRMC acknowledged a growing concern over unpaid patient responsibilities — a key contributor to the hospital’s deteriorating financial condition. Hospital leadership said they have been working for months to identify the root causes of the shortfall and implement corrective measures.

“Many have asked what went wrong. We’ve been asking those same questions,” the statement read. “We’ve identified several contributing factors, including a significant rise in unpaid accounts, and we’re taking action.”

Beginning next week, PRMC will begin sending letters through Silo Recovery, a third-party service, to patients with accounts that are 120 days or more past due. Approximately 2,517 individuals owe balances across nearly 7,000 accounts, totaling an estimated $11 million.

The letters will serve as formal reminders and offer patients an opportunity to settle their accounts before the hospital considers any collection activity.

“We understand that many individuals are experiencing financial hardship,” the statement said. “If you receive a letter and have questions about your account, need to apply for financial assistance or arrange a payment plan, we urge you to contact the number listed on the letter.”

PRMC emphasized that patients should respond within 30 days to avoid further action.

Despite its financial challenges, the hospital said it remains committed to providing “excellent and compassionate healthcare” and will continue working toward financial stability.

“We appreciate the community’s support during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A man convicted of killing a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper in 1978 has been granted parole after having past requests rejected, inspiring criticism and prompting the governor on Friday to call for reconsidering the decision.

Jimmie K. Nelms and another man, both from Tulsa, Oklahoma, were sentenced to serve two life sentences for the aggravated kidnapping and murder of&nbsp;<a href="https://kansashighwaypatrol.gov/end-of-watch/trooper-conroy-g-obrien/">Trooper Conroy O'Brien</a>&nbsp;following a traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike about 55 miles (89 kilometers) northeast of Wichita. Nelms' codefendant, Walter Myrick, died in prison in 2009.

In Kansas, killing a law enforcement officer now can be punished by death, with the only other possible sentence in a capital case being life in prison without parole. But in 1978, Kansas had no death penalty, and Nelms was eligible for parole after 30 years in 2008. He sought parole in 2011 and 2021.

A date for Nelms' release hasn't been set. His release was approved by the Prisoner Review Board, comprised of three veteran state Department of Corrections employees appointed by its top administrator. Department spokesman David Thompson said the decision came several weeks after a March 6 hearing.

“The Kansas Prisoner Review Board believes that Mr. Nelms is able and willing to fulfill the obligations of a law-abiding citizen and is of the opinion that there is reasonable probability that Mr. Nelms can be released without detriment to the community or to himself,” Thompson said in a statement.

A decision becomes public when it's criticized

The decision didn't become public until the Kansas State Troopers Association condemned it as “disgraceful and disgusting” in a statement Thursday. Under Kansas law, it appears unlikely that critics can prevent Nelms' release.

“Those who murder law enforcement officers should expect to receive the death penalty, not to be walking free on the streets of KS,” state Attorney General Kris Kobach said in&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/KrisKobach1787/status/1920623287995916337">a post</a>&nbsp;on the social platform X.

The Kansas Legislature's top leaders, Senate President Ty Masterson and House Speaker Dan Hawkins, called the parole decision “unconscionable” Friday.

They and Kobach are Republicans; the Department of Corrections is under Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat. But Kelly wants the board to consider reversing the decision “if legally possible," spokesperson Grace Hoge said.

“The facts of this case demonstrate a brutal and intentional killing of a law enforcement officer,” Hoge said in an email. “There is no justification for this decision.”

According to court records and news reports, O'Brien stopped Nelms' car for speeding about 2 miles south of a turnpike service area. Myrick was driving.

As O'Brien wrote a ticket in his patrol car, Nelms approached the driver's side with a gun, according to authorities. Nelms forced O'Brien to get out of the car and told him to lie down in a ditch. Authorities said Nelms took O'Brien's gun, struck the trooper with it, and, when O'Brien fell to the ground, shot him twice in the head.

O'Brien was 26 with a pregnant wife. Nelms was 31 and Myrick, 25. A 21-year-old man was also in the car with Nelms and Myrick, but he pleaded guilty to lesser charges and provided crucial testimony against Nelms.

The men fled in Nelms' car, left the turnpike, and eventually drove north, where another patrol trooper spotted the car about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of where O'Brien died. Nelms' car and the trooper's collided in a pasture, and a gun battle ensued.

Nelms denied he was the shooter, but jurors convicted him and Myrick of murder, aggravated kidnapping and other charges during a joint trial.

Nelms served most of his sentence in maximum-security prisons but was transferred to a lower-security facility in 2023. Online Department of Corrections records show four disciplinary reports against him from 1996 to 2017, the last for disobeying orders. Thompson said Nelms works in the prison laundry.

Kansas changes how parole decisions are made

When Nelms sought parole in 2011, decisions were made by a three-member parole board appointed by the governor, subject to state Senate confirmation. That same year, Republican Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order abolishing the parole board in favor of a panel of Department of Corrections employees.

Brownback said the move would save the state $500,000 a year, and sentencing laws after 1993 limited parole. Critics worried that the department's board would release inmates just to avoid prison overcrowding, and Kelly, then a state senator, called the change “a really bad idea.”

Masterson, the current Senate president, backed the change in 2011 but said Friday that it “has not functioned as intended" and that he would work for changes to see that the review board members “rightly answer to the people of Kansas.”

Democratic state Rep. Tom Sawyer, who reviewed Nelms' case as a parole board member from 2009 through June 2011, said the board sometimes rejected parole when corrections officials recommended. Now, he said, the process is “all in-house.”

As for Nelms, Sawyer said, “I think it’s highly unlikely the parole board would have let him go, based on my experience.”

Authorities said Nelms took O'Brien's gun, struck the trooper with it, and, when O'Brien fell to the ground, shot him twice in the head.O'Brien was 26 with a pregnant wife. Nelms was 31 and Myrick, 25. A 21-year-old man was also in the car with Nelms and Myrick, but he pleaded guilty to lesser charges and provided crucial testimony against Nelms.The men fled in Nelms' car, left the turnpike, and eventually drove north, where another patrol trooper spotted the car about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of where O'Brien died. Nelms' car and the trooper's collided in a pasture, and a gun battle ensued.Nelms denied he was the shooter, but jurors convicted him and Myrick of murder, aggravated kidnapping and other charges during a joint trial.Nelms served most of his sentence in maximum-security prisons but was transferred to a lower-security facility in 2023. Online Department of Corrections records show four disciplinary reports against him from 1996 to 2017, the last for disobeying orders. Thompson said Nelms works in the prison laundry.<h2>Kansas changes how parole decisions are made</h2>When Nelms sought parole in 2011, decisions were made by a three-member parole board appointed by the governor, subject to state Senate confirmation. That same year, Republican Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order abolishing the parole board in favor of a panel of Department of Corrections employees.Brownback said the move would save the state $500,000 a year, and sentencing laws after 1993 limited parole. Critics worried that the department's board would release inmates just to avoid prison overcrowding, and Kelly, then a state senator, called the change “a really bad idea.”Masterson, the current Senate president, backed the change in 2011 but said Friday that it “has not functioned as intended" and that he would work for changes to see that the review board members “rightly answer to the people of Kansas.”Democratic state Rep. Tom Sawyer, who reviewed Nelms' case as a parole board member from 2009 through June 2011, said the board sometimes rejected parole when corrections officials recommended. Now, he said, the process is “all in-house.”As for Nelms, Sawyer said, “I think it’s highly unlikely the parole board would have let him go, based on my experience.”

At 4:25 PM on May 9, the Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) was dispatched to the 100 block of West 9th Street for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found a garage fully engulfed in flames.

HFD Truck 1 quickly took action, deploying a hand line and aggressively attacking the fire. Firefighters worked swiftly to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby garages, ensuring the safety of the surrounding properties.

Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts of the HFD, the fire was brought under control in a short time. Crews remained on scene for approximately an hour to conduct a thorough investigation and extinguish any lingering hotspots.

No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Safely operate The Wesley equipment and company vehicles.

Maintain cleaning carts, work areas and equipment in a safe, clean, orderly manner.

Keep supervisors informed of any problems, issues or supply/equipment needs.

Observe residents and communicate any concerns, changes of behavior or physical well-being to the appropriate person; encourage socialization among residents and their participation in activities.

Respond to emergency situations and drills. Perform tasks assigned by the appropriate authority in these situations.

Provide floor care appropriate to surface type as needed.

Keep up-to-date with chemicals currently in use along with their proper usage and procedures for use.

Participate in Continuous Service Improvement meetings as assigned and complete or assist in completion of continuous service improvement inspections and data gathering.

Assist with setup for various functions taking place within The Wesley complex.

Assist with internal moves of residents by the packing and unpacking of personal belongings and moving furniture as assigned.

Deliver clean linen and towels to the appropriate storage areas as assigned.

Check resident rooms while residents are away from home as scheduled.

Wash inside and outside of windows as assigned.

Collect, sort, launder and deliver personal clothing to residents.

Maintain records of processed resident clothing as requested.

Assist in searching for and finding missing clothing, marking them; then returning them to the proper owner.

Keep resident clothing in good repair; mend as needed.

Maintain laundry area on a daily basis in regard to cleanliness and infection control issues.

Perform housekeeping and laundry duties as assigned by supervisors to provide services as needed for the residents.

Must be flexible in relation to change of duties and work areas. Must demonstrate ability to work directly with the elderly in a one-to-one situation, to communicate clearly what your tasks are and to help alleviate apprehensive feelings the resident may have concerning your tasks. Must be able to concentrate on detail with frequent interruptions. Consideration of residents is the first priority when performing tasks. It is essential that infection control be practiced daily and must be in compliance with state and federal regulations. Must be able to distinguish smells and see well enough to determine whether or not surfaces are clean. Will be on-call as needed so will need access to transportation with little or no notice and some means of getting a message by phone for emergency call-in purposes.

Frequent sitting, standing, walking and bending with occasional squatting, crawling, climbing and reaching above the head. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and carry up to 30 pounds unassisted. Position requires frequent grasping and fine manipulation with both hands and pushing and pulling, including linen and utility carts. Periodic moving of furniture and the operation of equipment is necessary.

High school education or GED preferred. Must be able to read, write, and/or receive oral or written instructions.

Previous housekeeping experience preferred. Previous experience in working with older adults preferred.

Exposure to great fluctuations in temperature from going outside in seasonal conditions. High range would be above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and lowest would be below zero. Exposure to loud or unpleasant noises in using machinery. Occasional exposure to unpleasant odors. Exposure to chemicals, dust and fumes. Exposure to infections, waste and potentially infectious diseases. May be working in small, close areas or from a ladder.
