NEWTON, Kan. — The Harvey County Sheriff's Office will conduct a DUI checkpoint this weekend as part of an effort to keep impaired drivers off the roads during Halloween celebrations.

The checkpoint will begin Saturday evening, Oct. 31, and continue into Sunday morning, Nov. 1.

The Sheriff's Office will oversee the operation with assistance from other local law enforcement agencies, including the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Officials said the checkpoint is intended to educate motorists about the dangers of impaired driving and identify drivers who may be operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Sheriff's Office reminds motorists that impaired driving puts drivers, passengers, pedestrians and others on the road at risk.

Residents planning to celebrate Halloween are encouraged to make transportation arrangements ahead of time, particularly if alcohol will be involved. Officials recommend designating a sober driver or arranging another safe way home.

The Sheriff's Office last conducted a DUI checkpoint in April.

The exact location and hours of this weekend's checkpoint were not announced.
