Human Relations Commission meets Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager says filings for the next municipal and school board election are slow to come in.

The deadline to file for office is June 1. Fager says so far the only race in the primary is in the NW District for Hutchinson City Council. That seat is currently held by John Daveline who has yet to file. Two others have thrown their hat in the ring. They are Jill Gumble and Jon Richardson. At-large incumbent Sara Bagwell and SW District resident Greg Fast have also filed.

Numerous school board seats are also up for election this year as well as Hutchinson Community College. Many of the spots do not have candidates at this time. Fager says the pace has picked up in the last week and she hopes that will continue.

Again, the deadline to file for office is June 1 at noon.

A ceremony is coming up Friday to commemorate Peace Officers Memorial Day.

"The men and women that work at the Hutchinson Police Department and the Fire Department, for that matter, have dedicated their lives to this community and to be part of something bigger than themselves," said Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper. "I say this every time I have an applicant sitting in front of me and I'm trying to determine his heart and why he wants to be a police officer. There are not a lot of people these days that are willing to put on a uniform, pin a badge to their chest, kiss their loved ones goodbye and walk out the door and risk their life in a community full of people that most of the time, don't care about them."

The hope is that the public will be able to come out over their lunch hour to honor the officers who have passed and those who continue to work for all the law enforcement agencies in Reno County.

"We're having a joint ceremony with the Reno County Sheriff's Office in front of the Hutchinson Police Department at 11 a.m. Friday," Hooper said.&nbsp;

Immediately following the event is a barbecue for law enforcement in SW Bricktown Park. A previous version of this story implied that it was also open to the public. Hutch Post regrets the error.

Hutchinson police officers who have died in the line of duty are Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, end of watch July 3rd, 1924 and Officer Kenneth Kennedy end of watch Friday, September 15th, 1972.

Dr. Walker has had strong connections to the school over the years, first as admissions director, teacher, and coach in 2015–2016. He later served on the CCS Board of Trustees through April 2021 where he has proven to be a key advisor on crucial issues that the school has and will continue to face. Walker will have a vested interest in the school for years to come as his four young children advance through the CCS pre-K program and the elementary school in the coming years. Dr. Walker joins school administration in the midst of much prayer by our board members (and many others) that CCS may continue in its tradition, while growing in excellence to fulfill its purpose. We believe a big part of this purpose is to educate the hearts and minds of our students by partnering with families, enrich the lives of our faculty and staff as stakeholders in fulfilling the mission, and further our reach in the local community that God has positioned us within. We believe that Dr. Walker will be instrumental in advancing this mission at CCS.”

Walker&nbsp;most recently served as Chief Student Engagement Officer for Central Christian College of Kansas in McPherson where he supervised the office of student life, admissions, enrollment, and financial aid.&nbsp;&nbsp;Walker&nbsp;successfully defended his dissertation in February 2021 and recently graduated with a Doctor of Education from Missouri Baptist University.&nbsp;He holds a Master of Education degree from Regent University, a Bachelor of Science from Emmaus Bible College, and an Associate of Applied Science from Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp;Walker&nbsp;said he is most excited about the opportunity to work closely with the CCS Board of Trustees as they seek to partner with the local church, local families, and Christ as the Head of the church to pursue a path forward built on the three pillars of kingdom education: the home, the church, and the school.&nbsp;

Central Christian hires new superintendent

Gas prices may go up in some parts of the country as a result of the hacking that caused a pipeline shutdown out east, but locally that's not what is causing prices to go up.

"It's something that we've definitely been monitoring," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "With the partial shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline due to the hacking situation last Friday, we do anticipate there may be some price increases and some shortages in certain areas of the country that are served by that pipeline. Primarily, that's in the southeast and along the East Coast. Other areas of the country, we think will see very little impact."

The things that impact prices traditionally in normal years are having more of an effect here.

"This is a time when demand for gasoline is increasing," Steward said. "That's why we've been seeing the price increases fairly steady over the last several weeks and that continues into this week."

The statewide average as of Wednesday morning is $2.84 per gallon. The Reno County average is $2.78.

"A year ago, we were in the middle of pandemic shutdowns and a lot of activity really slowing down in terms of commerce and in terms of travel," Steward said. "A year ago, we were at $1.50."

It's likely we'll continue to see prices go up whether or not the pipeline issue is resolved, just because of the demand increases and the additional cost to produce summer blend gasoline.

Republican State Representative Paul Waggoner believes this may have been the best year the Legislature has had in a while.

"Actually, I'm very happy," Waggoner said. "Of the three years I've been up there, this would be the one that I think has had the most substantive accomplishments for the state and for the people of Reno County."

From tax relief to election legislation, the Republican majority was busy overriding Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's vetoes.

"The biggest was on the tax bill, Senate Bill 50 that actually decouples your taxes from the federal tax base," Waggoner said. "Because of the 2018 federal changes a lot of people actually had up to a $500 or $600 tax increase without their income changing at all. That's been fixed. It's also been made correct for businesses, as well. We had a number of things that maybe weren't quite as big, on reciprocity, on gun rights. The election bills, we made our laws more consistent."

One of the bills that didn't get overridden is the women in sports bill. 

"It did end on the Senate side," Waggoner said. "I will say, it was probably still a couple of votes short on the House side as well. It has very strong majorities, but to get to two thirds, that's the real issue."

The legislature returns for Sine Die on May 26.

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven USD 312 announced Tuesday that it will implement a diversity and inclusion council at Haven High School starting next year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This pilot program is aimed at surveying school culture surrounding diversity and inclusion.

According to a release from the district, some initial actions from the council are to produce a reporting system for students and parents, staff development opportunities, and the selection of a survey tool surrounding school diversity and inclusion. 

The council is currently made of staff with intentions to include students this coming fall.&nbsp;

Haven USD 312 to start diversity council involving students

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie’s new superintendent Ashley Anderson will be coming on-board sooner than planned. The USD 311 Board approved moving up Anderson’s start date to June 1.&nbsp;

Anderson was to start July 1 at the beginning of the new fiscal year, but when Superintendent Randy Hendrickson was terminated by the board last month, work began to see if Anderson could begin her leadership role sooner.&nbsp;

She replaces Interim Superintendent Mike Baldwin, who has been leading the district since Hendrickson's dismissal.

Anderson is currently the curriculum director in the Savannah, Missouri, school district near St. Joseph. She is originally from a small town in Chase County near Emporia. She received her master's degree and specialist degree from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

Dusty Tacha, USDA Rangeland Management Specialist spoke to the Board of County Commissioners Tuesday and explained that the only way to reduce the wildfire danger in Fire District 2 is to mitigate the growth of cedars and to do it by clearing and burning. Clearing them alone won't do it.

"This problem is going to get exponentially worse," Tacha said. "There's no cure for it. Nobody can spend $1500 an acre every 10 years because they cleared and didn't burn behind them, just to fight a losing battle."

Commissioner Daniel Friesen asked the commission to move the ball on the issue Tuesday.

"It seems to me like we need a better plan," Friesen said. "I was wondering if this commission would be willing to set a directive to our emergency management group to make some recommendations as to how we can better coordinate mitigation of our fire risk."

Commissioner Ron Sellers agreed that something needs to be done.

"The people in that area have got to realize that they are part of a long range, very dangerous situation," Sellers said. "Yes, the county's got some responsibility, we do fund Fire District 2, but I'm not sure that funding's going to protect them."

Given the mutual aid agreements between the different stations in the county and the different counties in fighting wildfires, it's an issue for all taxpayers when an area has a greater risk and Friesen would like to see if there is a way funding can be allocated to mitigation because that will clearly be less expensive than fighting the fires that would result if nothing is done.

Specialist tells county they need more cedar mitigation for wildfires

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 will host a free COVID-19 shot clinic on Tuesday, May 18, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary, located at 315 E. Bigger St.&nbsp;

Both Johnson &amp; Johnson and Moderna vaccines will be available to anyone 18 or older. The only thing individuals need to bring is their insurance card, but they do not have to have insurance to be vaccinated. There will be a 15-minute observation period after receiving the vaccine, with the entire vaccination process taking roughly 30 minutes.

USD 308 to offer vaccination clinic

Karen Hammersmith with the Reno County Health Department says she has spoken to the local doctors that work with kids and parents who are considering vaccinating their 12-15 year olds with the Pfizer vaccine once it is cleared later this week should talk to their doctor.

"They definitely want anybody that wants the vaccine to get the vaccine especially if you have some high-risk factors," Hammersmith said. "You can also get it if you don't have high-risk factors, because the vaccine is improved. We know that what it prevents is serious complications, which we have seen in that younger generation. We just haven't seen as much of that."

It is the intent of the Health Department to get in some Pfizer vaccine, in light of the new developments.

"We plan to order the vaccine for next week," Hammersmith said. "Once a week, we put in an order to KDHE and then they get that from the federal government as to how much vaccine is available. We are going to order some Pfizer. It's got a little bit of an issue with the shelf life."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in late February approved storage and transportation of the Pfizer vaccine at standard freezer temperatures for up to two weeks instead of ultra-cold conditions. Before that, it had required ultra-cold storage.

Young adults are also encouraged to get their shots.

"We still want to push that vaccine out to those specifically in the 20 to 49-year-old group, too, that we have a lot less people vaccinated," Hammersmith said. "You can come as a family. We can get the parents, we can get the kids 12 and up all vaccinated at the same time."

Until the county's shipment can get in, you can look at vaccinefinder.org to see who currently has the Pfizer shot.

Hammersmith: Talk to doc about vaccine for young teens

Dole VA Medical Center will offer the Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at this weekend’s resource fair hosted by Central Kansas Veteran Community Partnership to all veterans who are currently enrolled for VA health care, as well as all eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine under the SAVE LIVES Act, which includes veteran caregivers.

The vaccine will be offered from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at&nbsp;Pizza Ranch at 1805 E. 17th in Hutchinson.

Vaccinations will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Quantities are limited, so those desiring to receive the vaccine should arrive as early as possible.

Veterans to be vaccinated at CKVCP fair Saturday

MCPHERSON — A building in downtown McPherson partially collapsed Tuesday morning.&nbsp;

According to a social media report from police, officers took a report of a loud boom and the building collapsing in the 100 Block of North Main Street at Marlin Street.

 First responders arrived and observed that the west wall of a residence above Sounds Great, 123 N Main Street had crumbled. There were no injuries. 

Officials closed the 100 block of North Main Street and 100 block of West Marlin Street and asked pedestrians to stay away from the area until a structural engineer and shoring is in place.

Building partially collapses in downtown McPherson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tyson Foods released its second quarter earnings report on Monday. The meat and poultry giant reported net income of $476 million or $1.30 per share. That’s up from $1.03 per share in 2020. Sales increased to $11.3 billion.&nbsp;

The company continued to rebound from a tough 2020 that saw the pandemic run through the company along with a major structure fire in Garden City which shut down a major processing facility. The company said in its release that inflation may stunt some of the growth in the coming months and the company is working to control supply chain costs.

Despite the rebound, the company continued to see declines in the processed food sector which fell 4.2% year over year although operating income did increase.

Processed foods sales volume decreased during the second quarter and the first six months of the fiscal year due to the reduction in the foodservice channel related to the pandemic.

The sector also faced a challenging labor and supply environment and the impact of severe winter weather.

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven School Board took time to recognize Rachel Kelly as the district's 4th quarter Impact Award Winner. Kelly has served the district for the past two years as a counselor for grades K-6 at Haven Grade School.

The district says Kelly had a crucial part in creating the Community Connections Series, which helps to bring in outside services into the school, open communication for students needing extra support and providing staff with support when needed.&nbsp;

She is an active member of the District Leadership Team and an integral part of the Caring Team.

The Impact Award is given quarterly to an employee in USD 312. One of those four will be named Impact Award Winner for the year at the end of the school year.

HALSTEAD, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for a local campground.

The Spring Lake Resort near Halstead was issued the advisory May 7 after a water line break which resulted in lost pressure in the system.&nbsp;

The advisory is not COVID-19 related and will remain in effect until the water is tested and KDHE says it is safe.

Spring Lake Resort under water advisory

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will look over revisions to the academic honesty policy when they meet Tuesday evening. The revisions are mostly language related but does lessen the penalty for dishonesty in the classroom.

The current language states that a student caught cheating can be dismissed from the course and even the school depending on the severity of the incident. The student is not able to take a withdrawal from the class. Under the revision, a student would be sanctioned for the work done and would be allowed to make up the work under certain circumstances. The student could still be dismissed from the course and under the most severe sanctions, the student could still be dismissed from the school.

Also Tuesday, the board will seek approval of a contract for new men’s basketball coach Tommy DeSalme with a base salary of $70,000 per season along with a long list of team performance incentives including graduation rates.

Finally, the board will seek approval to enter into the K-JUMP lawsuit that many K-12 schools are entering. The lawsuit seeks to recover funds connected to the cold spell which sent natural gas bills soaring.

Tuesday’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC campus.

Hutch CC BOT meets Tuesday evening

Kan. — Speaker Terrance Tally, who spoke to Hutch High students virtually earlier this year, is coming to HMS-8 on Wednesday along with the band 10 Talents.

"We're both represented by the same agency," said Eric Wagler with 10 Talents. "We've been touring together. This will be the third year that we've been touring with Terrence. We both kind of have a similar message of hope and don't let go and never give up."

Wagler knows that the band is able to reach kids in a way others can't.

"It breaks down walls," Wagler said. "It's a much quicker way to just break down those walls and to open up the central message."

After the HMS-8 event, there will be a concert at The Father's House at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"That night is more open to the public," Wagler said. "Any age group can show up that night. The whole event probably lasts, you know, an hour and a half. We set up all our gear, all our lights, smoke and haze and mirrors and everything else. It will be a lot of fun, a lot of original music. Terrence will talk a little bit during that as well and share a little bit more of his story."

Tally and 10 Talents are touring at Kansas schools and churches this week.

Speaker and band coming to HMS-8 Wednesday

The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education Monday (May 10, 2021) approved one year of funding for piloting the Leader in Me curriculum for eight of its schools during a regular meeting.

Leader in Me is designed for K-12 students and fits in with the district’s two primary focuses for the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation, which are rigor and relevance. The curriculum was created by the same organization that developed 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The program is based on the See-Do-Get Cycle. When a person changes the way things are seen, it influences what the individual does and the results the person gets.

Earlier this spring, district administrators went through the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People training as background for the new initiative. Schools that will pilot Leader in Me are Hutchinson High School, HMS-8, HMS-7, Wiley, Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen, Graber, Faris and McCandless.

Approved continuing the use of Newsela in the district.

Approved the purchase of furniture for the Parents as Teachers and Head Start programs.

The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education Monday (May 10, 2021) approved one year of funding for piloting the Leader in Me curriculum for eight of its schools during a regular meeting.Leader in Me is designed for K-12 students and fits in with the district’s two primary focuses for the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation, which are rigor and relevance. The curriculum was created by the same organization that developed 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The program is based on the See-Do-Get Cycle. When a person changes the way things are seen, it influences what the individual does and the results the person gets.Earlier this spring, district administrators went through the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People training as background for the new initiative. Schools that will pilot Leader in Me are Hutchinson High School, HMS-8, HMS-7, Wiley, Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen, Graber, Faris and McCandless. In other action, the Board:Approved continuing the use of Newsela in the district.Approved the purchase of furniture for the Parents as Teachers and Head Start programs.Set a special Board meeting at 6 p.m. on June 7 for RSP to present on the status of its comprehensive facilities study for the district.Approved minutes for the April 26, 2021, Board meeting.Approved the accounts payable report for April 2021.Approved the annual Skyward Student renewal for 2021-22.
