Drivers in Harvey County should plan ahead for a temporary closure this week as the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) continues work on the 36th Street bridge replacement.

KDOT officials announced that both northbound and southbound off-ramps from Interstate 135 to 36th Street will be closed on Friday, August 29, beginning at 5 a.m. The ramps are expected to reopen by 3 p.m., weather permitting.

The closure is necessary to accommodate ongoing construction activities tied to the replacement of the 36th Street bridge, a project aimed at improving safety and extending the life of the corridor.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, use alternate routes, and exercise caution when navigating through work zones.

K-Dot to close ramps as part of bridge replacement project

 A rollover crash north of Hutchinson Wednesday afternoon left a 19-year-old Hutchinson man in critical condition.

According to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, deputies, along with the Hutchinson Fire Department, Reno County EMS, and Kansas Highway Patrol, were dispatched around 3:06 p.m. to the 6100 block of North Plum Street for reports of a single-vehicle rollover with entrapment.

First responders located a 2010 Chevrolet Corvette in the east ditch. The vehicle had struck a tree and overturned, trapping the driver inside. Emergency crews extricated the 19-year-old before performing life-saving measures. He was transported to a Wichita hospital in critical condition.

Investigators determined a second vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Charger driven by a 20-year-old man from Plevna, was also involved in the crash. He sustained minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Authorities say both vehicles were traveling north on Plum Street when the Charger attempted to overtake the Corvette. The two collided, sending the Corvette off the roadway and into the tree. Investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash.

Accident critically injures teen 

NEWTON – The Harvey County Commission has approved the purchase of a downtown Newton property that will help the County address both short- and long-term space needs.

At its meeting Tuesday, commissioners voted to acquire the building at 109/111 E. Seventh St., located just south of the Harvey County Courthouse, for $100,000. The building most recently housed law offices.

In the immediate future, the property will serve as swing space for county departments as the Courthouse undergoes renovations. Departments could temporarily relocate to the Seventh Street site while upgrades are made to their existing offices.

Over the long term, the building offers additional flexibility for the County and the Ninth Judicial District as they plan for future space demands.

Closing on the property is expected in mid-September.

The survey, which takes less than 10 minutes to complete, is designed to give county officials a clearer picture of what’s working in Rice County’s housing market—and what isn’t. Whether residents rent, own, build, or hope to stay in the community long-term, organizers say every voice matters.

“This is your chance to be heard,” county officials said in the announcement. “Your feedback will help us create housing solutions that actually work—for you, your family, and your town.”

Survey responses will directly inform future housing plans and strengthen the county’s ability to compete for grant funding to bring improvements to local neighborhoods.

Officials stressed that participation is critical to shaping policies that reflect real community needs. “Every response gets us one step closer to the homes and neighborhoods our county deserves,” the announcement stated.

Reno County leaders, engineers, and floodplain specialists gathered on Aug. 26, for a Flood Risk Review Meeting to discuss draft updates to the county’s floodplain maps and outline next steps in the years-long mapping project.&nbsp;

The meeting, hosted by the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA), WSP USA engineers, and FEMA Region 7, focused on how new flood risk data was developed and the importance of community feedback before maps are finalized.&nbsp;

Flooding remains the most dangerous weather-related threat in the U.S., and accurate floodplain maps help communities plan development, reduce future damage, and determine insurance requirements. Officials said new modeling, aerial imagery, and LiDAR data collected between 2022 and 2025 revealed the need for further revisions.&nbsp;

The revised draft maps reflect changes in stream paths, drainage areas, and levee conditions across the county:&nbsp; •&nbsp; Plum Creek was renamed to reflect the GVI drainage ditch, constructed in 2002.&nbsp; •&nbsp; &nbsp;Cow Creek Tributary C realigned, with portions removed from future maps.&nbsp; •&nbsp; &nbsp;Cow Creek Tributary A rerouted and renamed the “East Side Storm Drain” following terrain changes near 43rd Avenue.&nbsp; •&nbsp; &nbsp;Updated Zone AE and Zone A flood models include new analysis, refined land-use data, and surveyed bridge and culvert structures for greater accuracy.&nbsp; •&nbsp; &nbsp;Accredited levees in Hutchinson, Willowbrook, and South Hutchinson remain recognized, while several smaller levees in Haven, Yoder, Nickerson, and Mount Hope are mapped as “hydraulically insignificant.”&nbsp;

Right now, community leaders are in their comment phase. &nbsp;During this phase they will make notification to the mapping agencies of changes that have been made, or are scheduled that could affect the rainwater runoff. &nbsp;Examples of this are landscaping changes, development of stormwater catch basins or improvements to existing drainage systems. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Once this stage is complete, a public open house will be scheduled where residents can meet with mapping experts, engineers, and insurance specialists to discuss the draft floodplains.&nbsp;

The changes could affect property owners across multiple Reno County communities, including Arlington, Buhler, Haven, Hutchinson, Nickerson, Partridge, Pretty Prairie, South Hutchinson, Sylvia, and Turon. Some properties may be newly included in the floodplain, while others may be removed.&nbsp;

Project leaders emphasized that community participation is crucial:&nbsp;

“This is your opportunity to have an impact,” they stated. “We want to agree on what your map looks like before it enters preliminary status, when changes become much harder to make.”&nbsp;

City, county officials briefed on draft floodplain maps

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;&nbsp;The City of Hutchinson has installed the temporary traffic signals on Main Street for the upcoming Kansas State Fair.&nbsp;

The lights have been installed at 20th and Main, along with 23rd and Main.

The temporary signals will be in use Wednesday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 15.

These lights are used to help control possible congestion issues for the upcoming fair, which runs Sept. 5-14.

Governor Laura Kelly has directed flags be lowered to half-staff in honor of Judge Bruce Brown of the 18th Judicial District Division 10.

In accordance with Executive Order #20-30, flags will be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol Complex, as well as on all court buildings and facilities across Kansas. The tribute will continue through sundown on Saturday, August 30, 2025, the day Judge Brown is interred following his funeral services.

“Judge Brown dedicated his career to upholding justice and serving the people of Kansas with integrity,” Governor Kelly said in a statement. “We honor his legacy and extend our deepest sympathies to his family, colleagues, and community.”

Judge Brown served the 18th Judicial District with distinction, remembered by colleagues for his fairness on the bench and his commitment to public service.

Flags will return to full staff beginning Sunday, August 31.

Well, now the President of the National Corn Growers submitted comments on the investigation into Brazil’s unfair trading practices, specifically on ethanol.&nbsp; 

Brazil is actively trying to crush the American corn industry by directly and indirectly hurt American corn farmers.&nbsp; This has been happening for many years, and American corn farmers want it stopped.

Ag Minute: Ethanol and Brazil's unfair trading practices

McPHERSON — Students at McPherson High School were safely evacuated Tuesday afternoon after smoke was reported in the school’s wood shop area.

The McPherson Fire Department, McPherson Police Department, and McPherson EMS were dispatched shortly before 3 p.m. to investigate what was initially believed to be a possible electrical fire.

Responding crews directed their attention to the roundhouse wood shop, where students had already been evacuated as a precaution. Officials confirmed all students were safely released for the day once the incident was reported.

Upon investigation, firefighters determined that an electrical circuit embedded in the floor had shorted, causing a small amount of smoke. The issue was contained by isolating the circuit through its breaker. No flames were reported, and the situation was quickly brought under control.

USD 418 maintenance personnel assisted with the investigation and remained on scene after emergency crews cleared.

No injuries were reported, and officials say classes are expected to continue as normal once repairs are completed.

Electrical issue prompts evacuation at McPherson High School

September is National Recovery Month, a time set aside to raise awareness about the challenges of addiction and the hope of recovery. Christopher Fantastic, a counselor with Valley Hope in Moundridge and a person in long-term recovery himself, joined the BW Morning Show to discuss the causes of addiction, its warning signs, and the importance of support systems.&nbsp;

Fantastic, who has been sober since January 2016, said addiction often begins in adolescence and can stem from multiple causes, including trauma, genetics, and peer pressure. “I learned my drinking behaviors from my parents, both of whom were alcoholics,” he shared. “Peer pressure also played a big part. I was reluctant to try marijuana at first, but I did it because my friends were doing it, and that led me further down the path.”&nbsp;

While illegal drugs are often at the center of public discussion, Fantastic noted that prescription medications can also lead to substance use disorders. “Opiate addiction can start with just one prescription for pain,” he explained. “The same is true for benzodiazepines prescribed for anxiety, or stimulants like Adderall that are sometimes misdiagnosed and abused.”&nbsp;

Addiction today is not limited to substances. Fantastic pointed to rising cases of behavioral addictions such as social media, pornography, and online gambling. “Social media is a huge problem. There are even treatment centers now dedicated to social media withdrawal,” he said.&nbsp;

Recognizing the signs of addiction can be critical for family members and friends. Physical evidence such as paraphernalia, changes in behavior, or excessive time spent online can be indicators. Feelings of loneliness and isolation also play a role in fueling addiction, often driving loved ones away and leaving the individual more vulnerable.&nbsp;

Fantastic stressed the importance of community and connection in recovery. “Connection, I believe, is the opposite of addiction. Whether it’s a 12-step program, church, or sober friends, people need a support group to stand by their side.” He added that many who enter treatment also face co-occurring mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder.&nbsp;

Misconceptions, he said, remain one of the biggest barriers. “There’s a belief that people with addiction are just bad people. That’s not true. Addiction changes behavior, but no one is born that way.”&nbsp;

For those seeking help, Valley Hope offers 24-hour admissions and resources, even if the need is outside its adult-focused treatment model. The Moundridge location can be reached at 620-860-1904, with backup support available through its Overland Park call center.&nbsp;

“Recovery is possible,” Fantastic said. “I’m living proof, and so are countless others. No one has to go through it alone.”&nbsp;

Valley Hope leader highlights addiction awareness during recovery month

NEWTON — Newton Fire/EMS, along with multiple state and local partners, is investigating the source of natural gas detected in the Fox Ridge housing development.

Kansas Gas Service crews are using vacuum trucks to safely remove gas from the ground and reduce the risk of ignition. Officials emphasized that nearby homes are not in danger. The exact source of the gas has not yet been identified.

The situation first came to light last Friday during a routine site survey conducted by Kansas Gas Service near Southeast 10th and Logan. Subsequent inspections confirmed that the gas is not coming from the company’s own pipelines.

On Tuesday morning, the Harvey County Commission approved a disaster declaration to provide additional resources for the investigation. That declaration brought in two Regional Hazardous Material teams from the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office to conduct atmospheric monitoring in the area.

Several other agencies are assisting in the response, including Harvey County Emergency Management, the Kansas State Fire Marshal, the Kansas Geological Survey, the Kansas Corporation Commission, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management.

Officials say the investigation will continue until the source of the gas is identified and the situation fully resolved.

Three-day weather outlook 

The USD 308 Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, August 25, approving all agenda items, including the district’s 2025–26 budget.

Ahead of the meeting, the Board held its annual Revenue Neutral Rate and Budget Hearings. Superintendent Dawn Johnson noted that the total mill levy will remain unchanged at 52.418 mills—the lowest since 2008–09. By comparison, the levy peaked at 60.183 mills in 2013–14.

Johnson added that the difference between the current levy and the 2013–14 peak is greater than the estimated five mills that would be needed to fund proposed bonds for a new middle school and elementary improvements on the November ballot.

Finance Director Abby Stockebrand explained that, despite the unchanged rate, the levy will raise more money than last year due to increased property values. No members of the public spoke during the budget hearing.

The mill levy breakdown includes 20 mills in the general fund, 15.858 in the supplemental general fund, 14.948 in the bond and interest fund, and 1.612 in the capital outlay fund.

The Board also welcomed four new school leaders: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Emily Moore – Principal, Lincoln-McCandless Elementary •&nbsp;&nbsp;Christina Swedburg – Vice Principal, Lincoln-McCandless Elementary •&nbsp;&nbsp;Tim Porter – Vice Principal and Middle School Athletics Director, HMS8 •&nbsp;&nbsp;Jaime Tilton – Principal, Faris Elementary

Each spoke briefly about their passion for education and their excitement to join the Hutchinson community.

The Board approved a one-hour early release for Homecoming on Friday, September 26. The parade, which moved to a new route last year, will again run along North Plum to 11th Street, ending at the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

Feedback from parents, students, and staff was overwhelmingly positive about the new route, which keeps high school students closer to campus and allows younger students and families time to secure good viewing spots.

Homecoming festivities will include the traditional student council activities, spirit week events, and the Alumni Association’s Wall of Honor presentation on Thursday, September 25. The week concludes with the Hutchinson High School varsity football team facing the Salina South Cougars at 7:00 p.m. in Gowans Stadium.

The personnel report was approved without changes, and Gold Cards—providing free admission to regular-season athletic events—remain available at the Administration Center. All USD 308 employees also receive free entry with their district badge.

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 8, at 6:00 p.m. at the USD 308 Administration Center, 1520 N. Plum.

The parade, which moved to a new route last year, will again run along North Plum to 11th Street, ending at the Stringer Fine Arts Center.Feedback from parents, students, and staff was overwhelmingly positive about the new route, which keeps high school students closer to campus and allows younger students and families time to secure good viewing spots.Homecoming festivities will include the traditional student council activities, spirit week events, and the Alumni Association’s Wall of Honor presentation on Thursday, September 25. The week concludes with the Hutchinson High School varsity football team facing the Salina South Cougars at 7:00 p.m. in Gowans Stadium.<h2>Other Business</h2>The personnel report was approved without changes, and Gold Cards—providing free admission to regular-season athletic events—remain available at the Administration Center. Sherry Treece, STEAM educator at the Cosmosphere,said that the museum is now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to allow for cleaning and maintenance. Regular hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

On Friday, Oct. 10, the Cosmosphere will host the Sphero Robotics Symposium, a free professional development day for teachers. Treece said "They're a great company. They have a bunch of different robots, and we actually have all of their robots." 

The event includes breakfast, lunch, breakout sessions on robotics, and a keynote by Cosmosphere CEO Jim Remar.&nbsp;

High school students in grades 9–12 will once again have the chance to take part in the Mark Cuban AI Boot Camp this fall. The bootcamp will take place over three consecutive Saturdays; Nov. 1, 8 and 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meals transportation assistance, and technology will be provided at no cost.  

Hosted virtually by Cuban himself, the camp gives students hands-on training in artificial intelligence.  

Cuban emphasized, “Our goal is to ensure that every interested student, regardless of background or resources, can explore AI and its limitless possibilities.”  Applications are encouraged from girls, students of color, first-generation collegegoers, and students from low-income backgrounds. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2025.     

Families can begin registering for the 2026 Cosmosphere Summer Camps starting on Sept. 1. Registrations made during Labor Day week receive a 10% discount. Treece encouraged families to consider giving camp experiences as gifts, noting that each year’s programs build on the last. A highlight next summer will be the return of the travel camp to Houston. 

The next Coffee at the Cosmo event will take place on Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. Dr. Ryan Hale will present on the psychology of space exploration. Attendees will enjoy refreshments, including the Cosmosphere’s popular coffee cake. 

The Cosmosphere’s renovations are nearly complete, featuring new interactive areas such as the Rocket Lab classroom, a wind tunnel, a lunar walk simulation, and a docking module display. One of the newest additions to the artifact collection is a Falcon 9 rocket engine from SpaceX.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) is complete, the result of a partnership between the Reno County Health Department, Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, United Way of Reno County, Horizon’s Mental Health Center, PrairieStar Health Center, Hutchinson Clinic and the City of Hutchinson.

“This achievement reflects the strong partnership” of those organizations, the announcement said. “This assessment, which takes place every three years, gives us a clearer picture of the challenges and opportunities in our community’s health. Most importantly, it helps us work together toward creating a healthier Reno County for everyone.”

Through community feedback and collected data, six priorities were identified: access to care, behavioral health and substance misuse, food security, transportation, affordable housing, and addressing health disparities and community voice.

Reno County partners release 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment, set next steps

As the drone industry continues to advance and develop new regulations at a rapid pace,&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina's</a>&nbsp;Applied Aviation Research Center,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/research-training/applied-aviation-research-center/">or AARC</a>, prepares the next generation of drone pilots to be Federal Aviation Administration compliant through world-class uncrewed aircraft systems training and education.

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, is planning new regulations aimed at standardizing operations beyond the visual line of sight for commercial drones. Currently, Part 107 regulations with the FAA do not permit drones to fly beyond the visual line of sight of the operator without a special waiver.

The new set of regulations will allow for more expansive uncrewed aircraft systems, or UAS, operations beyond the visual line of sight, impacting all industries, including agriculture, engineering and public safety.

Upcoming webinar explains proposed UAS regulations

With this immense change coming to the industry, the Applied Aviation Research Center will provide a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/professional-education/uncrewed-training/part-108-webinar.html">free informational webinar</a>&nbsp;explaining the proposed regulations on Sept. 4. The webinar will discuss the new regulations, including guidance on detect-and-avoid, minimum operational standards, certification and training requirements, and integration into the national airspace.

"The AARC has a close connection to the FAA from our years of UAS experience," said Kurt Carraway, executive director of the Applied Aviation Research Center. "As the first university to receive a waiver of beyond visual line-of-sight UAS operations back in 2018, we have proven to be detailed and system-oriented with our operations. K-State Salina to hold webinar for drone pilots on proposed FAA changes

The United States could have another trade deal.&nbsp; 

This time, it's with the European Union.&nbsp; &nbsp;The EU intends to eliminate tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and provide preferential market access of U.S. seafood and agricultural products.&nbsp;

The Reno County Board of Commissioners will take up a full slate of items at its Wednesday meeting, ranging from community health initiatives to major facility upgrades and economic development incentives.

Commissioners are scheduled to hear from health educators Thomas Simmons and Gary Race, along with members of the Reno Recovery Collaborative, who will present a proclamation declaring September 2025 as National Recovery Month.

The proclamation recognizes the toll of substance misuse on families, schools, and the workforce, while highlighting the importance of resilience and recovery services. The Collaborative works with health providers, social service agencies, law enforcement, and Oxford Houses to strengthen local recovery networks. Commissioners will be asked to approve and sign the proclamation.

Another agenda item involves the planned remodel of EMS Station 2 in Hutchinson. Four bids were received, with MBC Construction submitting the lowest base bid of $570,000.

The project is currently under permitting review with the City of Hutchinson. Commissioners will consider a staff recommendation to award the bid to MBC, bringing the total project cost to about $659,600, funded through the county’s 099 Reserve Fund.

Commissioners will also review a second addendum to the county’s grant agreement with the United Way of Reno County, which administers childcare expansion programs funded by American Rescue Plan Act dollars.

The addendum would allow for upfront funding of $367,230 for the Kids Collective Project, helping alleviate financial strain on United Way and enabling more effective implementation of new childcare programs.

On the economic development front, the board will consider a request from ADE Wifco Steel Products, Inc. for job creation incentives as part of a major facility expansion.

Wifco plans to add 20 new jobs over the next year with wages starting at $21 per hour, supported by investments in new laser and welding technology. Commissioners will be asked to approve a letter of intent outlining incentive payments under the county’s job performance grant program.

Rounding out the agenda, commissioners will consider adopting a new policy to guide the use of the county’s Special Parks &amp; Recreation Fund, which is supported by liquor tax revenues.

The proposed policy establishes eligibility requirements, funding priorities, and accountability standards for projects such as playground upgrades, trails, community gardens, outdoor classrooms, and wellness programming. The goal is to ensure equitable access to recreational resources across Reno County communities outside of Hutchinson.

Commissioners will be asked to approve and sign the proclamation.<h2>EMS Station 2 Remodel Bids</h2>Another agenda item involves the planned remodel of EMS Station 2 in Hutchinson. Four bids were received, with MBC Construction submitting the lowest base bid of $570,000.The project is currently under permitting review with the City of Hutchinson. Commissioners will consider a staff recommendation to award the bid to MBC, bringing the total project cost to about $659,600, funded through the county’s 099 Reserve Fund.<h2>Childcare Expansion with United Way</h2>Commissioners will also review a second addendum to the county’s grant agreement with the United Way of Reno County, which administers childcare expansion programs funded by American Rescue Plan Act dollars.The addendum would allow for upfront funding of $367,230 for the Kids Collective Project, helping alleviate financial strain on United Way and enabling more effective implementation of new childcare programs.<h2>Wifco Steel Job Incentives</h2>On the economic development front, the board will consider a request from ADE Wifco Steel Products, Inc. for job creation incentives as part of a major facility expansion.Wifco plans to add 20 new jobs over the next year with wages starting at $21 per hour, supported by investments in new laser and welding technology. Commissioners will be asked to approve a letter of intent outlining incentive payments under the county’s job performance grant program.<h2>Special Parks and Recreation Fund Policy</h2>Rounding out the agenda, commissioners will consider adopting a new policy to guide the use of the county’s Special Parks &amp; Recreation Fund, which is supported by liquor tax revenues.The proposed policy establishes eligibility requirements, funding priorities, and accountability standards for projects such as playground upgrades, trails, community gardens, outdoor classrooms, and wellness programming. The goal is to ensure equitable access to recreational resources across Reno County communities outside of Hutchinson.

TOPEKA – Adam Jay Hrabik, 45&nbsp;of Lyons, was ordered to serve life in prison for the 2020 attempted murder of Lyons Police Officer Cory Ryan and aggravated assault of Lyons High School teacher Brian Friess, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced on Monday.

Senior Judge Merlin Wheeler sentenced Hrabik on Aug. 21 in Rice County District Court. In June, a Lyon County jury found Hrabik guilty of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In addition, Hrabik was ordered to pay over $525,000 in restitution.&nbsp;

Assistant Attorneys General Nicole Southall and JD Hatcher prosecuted the case on behalf of the Kansas Attorney General’s Office. Hrabik was charged with attempted capital murder nearly five years ago in connection with the October 2020 shootings of Lyons Police Officer Cory Ryan.

Nearly five years later, justice has been served.”The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of Lyon Police Department, Rice County Sheriff’s Office, Sterling Police Department, Reno County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
