The Reno County Sheriff's Office will be conducting DUI Saturation Patrols from April 1st through April 25th, 2021. 

Deputies will be out at various hours specifically targeting drivers who are impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. If you are planning on drinking or you are impaired, please find a sober driver. 

The Sheriff's Office said Wednesday, "We don't want to have to contact anyone's family to notify them that their loved one has been hurt or killed due to someone driving impaired. Please be responsible."

Reno County plans DUI crackdown

Kan. —&nbsp;The March Teacher of the Month Kris Jenkins is a preschool teacher at Nickerson Elementary. 

"Littles have always been my thing," Jenkins said. "This is my 37th year teaching and most of my time has been kindergarten or preschool. Every day is something different and the little people are just sponges. You know, to me, preschool should be about exposure to things they might not normally have been exposed to."

Tying those things together in a way to allow for activities the kids can do takes creativity.

"We've been watching the Decorah eagles on their Facebook page and their Youtube channel," Jenkins said. "We watched them restore their nest and then, as luck would have it, over spring break the darn things hatched and we couldn't watch them hatch together."

Jenkins was able to make little nests that the kids could have with noodles and Easter candies and they did an art project that was cutting out baby eagles hatching and putting them on a piece of paper, but it's about more than snacks and crafts. It's about creating a place they want to come to.

"You've got to have the kids feel loved and safe before you can ever teach," Jenkins said. "That's been my platform."

Jenkins knows she can't control what happens to them when they're not at school, but she and her staff give their best while they have them.

"I feel like, when they walk through the door of the building, I know, for seven and a half hours, I've got them. They're safe, I'm exposing them to new things. We're having fun. I have two classroom aides that are rock stars. I couldn't do what I do right now without them. If I'm having an off day, they will joke me out of it. I feel like our classroom is a place where they are safe, they are loved and they have fun."

Jenkins even helps them get mentally ready for the week by reading a story to them on Facebook on Sunday nights, to let them know she's thinking of them even when they are not in class.

The active case count in Reno County is at its lowest level since last summer. 

According to the Tuesday report from the Reno County dashboard, there are just 17 active cases of COVID-19 in Reno County. 

The last time the active case count was at 17 was July 3, 2020. 

139 people have had their deaths classified as COVID-related. Just two of those deaths have occurred in the last 30 days.

Out of 7,749 total cases since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 7,593 recoveries. There are 8 clusters still being monitored. None of the cluster types have documented cases currently visible on the dashboard.

Two Reno County residents are in the hospital with COVID-19. There have been 368 hospitalizations total and 103 ICU admissions.

Drive-thru testing is currently available at the Kansas Cosmosphere at 1100 N Plum in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the fires Monday came some of the same issues that have been in place in the past — homes that are built well off the beaten path. Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer calls them indefensible structures.

“We have some homes that are built anywhere from 100 yards to a half mile in with a 10-foot-wide driveway that is surrounded by cedar trees going right up to the driveway,” Beer said. “They get their home nestled in and they have it landscaped real nice.”

Beer says when you have that type of situation, it can make for extremely difficult conditions for fire crews.

“As a fire comes through here at 50 miles per hour with the wind pushing it, the conditions that these men and women face, it’s nothing that I can even describe to you,” Beer said. “ A firestorm is the best way I can describe it coming at you. There’s heat, you can’t see with the smoke and everything.”

Beer says he will not subject his firefighters to that type of dangerous situation.

“Basically we would put our people into a suicide mission. We could put them up by the house but they wouldn’t survive up there. They only got a thousand gallons of water and, with the flames that were flying up 70 feet in the air yesterday, it’s a suicide mission and we will not put our people in places that people choose to build that’s not defendable.”&nbsp;

Beer says every resident that lives in the northern part of the county should have a fire mitigation plan in place and says they will work with homeowners to put one together. Despite the two fast-moving fires, fire crews were able to save all 126 homes involved on Monday, along with 26 outbuildings.

HFD forced to choose which homes to protect when dealing with wildfires

UPDATE: As of 3:45: Crews still working on both the Ice fire at 108th and the Beer fire at 43 and areas behind that. Most of the work is dealing with large trees. The old cottonwood trees are often hollow and can burn inside the trunk for long periods of time. The red cedar which is dangerous due to its explosive nature in a fire is also presenting problems. Below is a photo of the two fires outlined in red and how they traveled through the county.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fire crews continue to work two fires in the county. In a press conference held late Tuesday morning Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer gave an update.

“Our fire units continue to work two fires near Hutchinson. The Ice fire on Plum Street between 95th and 108th, and the Beer fire from 4th Avenue to 43rd between Kent and Willison,” Beer said. “Both fires are about 50% contained as of this morning.”

Beer says mostly hot spots in timber are the main challenges along with the wind.

Beer says that they were able to save every home and structure in both fires with an estimated value in excess of $17 million. Beer says that comes from learning lessons from past wildfires in the county.

The fire department has been in contact with the National Guard about deploying&nbsp; Blackhawk helicopters so they can pinpoint water drops on the problem areas. The wind was still too strong during the morning hours to do that. They hope that might change later today.

Two task forces from Harvey and Sedgwick County are on the scene along with 12 HFD crews. Beer says that more than 900 acres has burned in the two fires, around 80 fire units were involved from around the area and nearly 170 fire fighters.

Beer says that they hope to have both fires under control by Monday. He also noted that the fire danger will remain very high through the weekend.&nbsp; Most roads are open again but the Reno County Sheriff’s Department is strongly urging motorists to stay out of the area due to the large amount of heavy equipment that is in the area. Only 108th east of Plum remains closed at this time.

Fires about 50% contained according to HFD Chief Beer

HutchCC spokesperson Denny Stoecklein said the spring semester is headed down the backstretch.

"We're only four weeks away, really," Stoecklein said. "Commencement is on April 30th. One of the adjustments we made last fall was to eliminate spring break and move up the end of the semester by a week. Four weeks from this Friday, we're graduating and finals are over and the kids are finished."

Given the short period, it doesn't make sense to change procedure.

"It's the same as its been since August, which really wasn't drastically different as far as delivery method of courses. The vast majority of them are in person. We've made adjustments within classrooms and using facilities as classrooms that were never classrooms before, because they're larger and allow us to distance more students."

Students have overwhelmingly said they want to be in person.

"Most every college has offered online classes for years, for decades," Stoecklein said. "That delivery method has always been there for us. What we were seeing throughout the summer was between 60 and 70% of the credit hours our students enrolled in were face to face classes. They wanted to be in the classroom."

Stoecklein praised the staff and students for adjusting and also thanked Medicine Shoppe for making the Pfizer vaccine available to faculty and employees at the college.

About a month left of school at HutchCC

Kan. — Karen Hammersmith with the Reno County Health Department made it clear that vaccinations are available to those 16 and over in Reno County, but those under 18 can only get one of the approved shots.

"Reno County does not have the Pfizer, which is the only vaccine approved for those that are 16 and over," Hammersmith said. "On our website, we don't have that available."

Reno County has mostly Moderna, but also a few Johnson and Johnson shots, but the distribution of vaccines from the state level down has changed in recent weeks, according to the Health Department's Karla Nichols.

"In past months, they supplied us, the Health Department, the vaccine and then we distributed it out to the Hutch Clinic, Prairie Star and any other vaccine providers," Nichols said. "Two weeks ago, they changed that. Now, they are sending it to us individually. I think, collectively, as a group, it's still about the amount or a little more than we have been receiving. I just can't for sure say that at this point."

They're also having data analyst D.J. Gering study where people who have gotten the shot are from.

"We also look at his assistance on where we can take vaccine to those different populations to increase the vaccine rates, to lessen any disparity and to make sure we have equality."

They plan to take vaccine clinics to outlying communities based on that data in the coming weeks.

County does not have Pfizer vaccine, is still looking to equalize distribution

Kan. —&nbsp; The Board of Reno County Commissioners has made it clear that they don't want to have a mask mandate back in the county, but the problem is that Governor Kelly hasn't issued her new mask mandate language yet.

"With respect to masking, there is no governor's order in place at this time," O'Sullivan said. "My advice is that since the resolution, the order that you adopt references an existing order of the Governor on any particular subject and indicates that you are making findings as to why you should issue an order less restrictive than that and identifies which restrictions to mitigate, reference has to be made to an actual existing order."

O'Sullivan intends to have draft language ready for whenever the governor issues a new order, which her office has indicated they likely would do April 1.

"We don't know what that is," O'Sullivan said. "If it's identical to 20-68 and she issues another order, I can, along the lines of the current order and the one we did in July, I can have prepared a rough draft. It would take me about five minutes to complete and I could have that available for adoption and approval by this board."

The most time consuming part of getting such a new mandate adopted would be notifying the media of any special meeting necessary to put it into place, if that were necessary.

"Give notice to the media and you can call a meeting in a matter of days, if that's necessary," O'Sullivan said. 

There is no specific time period of advance notice outlined by the Kansas Open Meetings Act according to the Kansas Attorney General's office's website.

"My advice is that since the resolution, the order that you adopt references an existing order of the Governor on any particular subject and indicates that you are making findings as to why you should issue an order less restrictive than that and identifies which restrictions to mitigate, reference has to be made to an actual existing order."O'Sullivan intends to have draft language ready for whenever the governor issues a new order, which her office has indicated they likely would do April 1."We don't know what that is," O'Sullivan said. "If it's identical to 20-68 and she issues another order, I can, along the lines of the current order and the one we did in July, I can have prepared a rough draft. It would take me about five minutes to complete and I could have that available for adoption and approval by this board."The most time consuming part of getting such a new mandate adopted would be notifying the media of any special meeting necessary to put it into place, if that were necessary."Give notice to the media and you can call a meeting in a matter of days, if that's necessary," O'Sullivan said. There is no specific time period of advance notice outlined by the Kansas Open Meetings Act according to the Kansas Attorney General's office's website.

At 11:23 p.m. the Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 314 E. 3rd Ave for a house fire. Heavy fire was showing from the roof of the rear of the house when crews got there.  A quick offensive attack was made by multiple crews and the fire was brought under control.  Fire extended into multiple void spaces and had to be exposed and extinguished. 

 The house had been converted into three apartments. No one was living there.  The investigation into the cause is open.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Questions from the Reno County Commission in regards to the 43rd Avenue bridge construction and their dealings with the Union Pacific Railroad were a part of a recent agenda session. And the railroad took time to respond.

Commissioner Daniel Friesen expressed his frustration during a recent meeting that the cost of the span was so high and says the railroad is mostly to blame. UP mandated that they have right of way for three tracks under the bridge and access roads. The mandate forced the county to build a more expensive style of bridge. Friesen says he wants to go to the legislature to see if there is a better way in dealing with railroads when it comes to such projects.

Kristin South with Union Pacific says such requests are a standard policy for the railroad noting that they are looking 50-75 years into the future and the continued expansion of rail traffic. The railroad has expressed a desire in the past to place a siding on the mostly single track line to cut down the distance between its two closest sidings in Inman and Whiteside.&nbsp;

South says no such plans are in the immediate future. The railroad is planning to expand the siding at Whiteside and that work should last throughout the summer.

Sego Road in Arlington down to one lane Wednesday

UPDATE: As of 6:50&nbsp; a.m. Tuesday: Only one road in Reno County is currently closed due to fire operations, that is 108th east of Plum, according to Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar.

UPDATE: As of 5 a.m. Tuesday: Winds are now out of the north, still sustained at over 20 miles per hour. The fire danger risk is expected to remain high through at least 7 p.m. tonight, with winds dying down a bit late Tuesday. ___________________________________________

UPDATE: As of 1:25 a.m. Tuesday: Winds are starting to turn to the west. Fire crews have set up along 30th and Willison and along the east side of the fire line. Winds are lighter at the moment but could start to pick up again as the winds make the full change to the west and then north. Winds in western Kansas were very impressive with a gust to 75 miles per hour reported around 11:30 p.m. around the Colby area. Winds gusts of 60 miles per hour were reported in Dodge City. Hopefully it will not do that here.

UPDATE: As of 1:05 a.m. Tuesday: The winds are moving into the St. John area as the wind shift line moves closer. Many crews have been sent back to their stations to rest up and reload for anything that might come along with the change in the wind. We have not heard much regarding the fire at 17th and Willison in the last hour. Bull dozers were working to build a fire line in that area. Firefighters also continue to monitor hot spots for anything that could reignite when the wind does change direction. At this time they are advising all fire crews on the scene that they should prepare to move to the east side of the fire line.

UPDATE: As of 12:05 a.m. Tuesday: Crews continue to battle a fire at 17th and Willison that has been burning for a little more than an hour. Bull dozers are in the area trying to build a fire line to slow it down. Winds are starting to turn. Burning trees are still a problem in some areas. Crews are hoping the wind is not as strong as reported in western Kansas where gusts have been reported as high as 60 MPH. Still no reports of injuries throughout this fire.&nbsp;

UPDATE: As of 11:45 p.m.. Fire crews trying to take a break at their trucks for now. HFD had to respond to another structure fire in the city. This one at 3rd and Elm that was called in around 11:15 p.m. There was another structure fire in the 400 block of E Sherman earlier Monday afternoon. The front that is supposed to change the wind overnight was stretching from Concordia to Hays to Dodge City where winds were reported at 60 miles per hour from the northwest in Dodge City and in excess of 45 miles per hour in Garden City. Concordia also had wind gusts of 55 miles per hour and Hays reported winds at 54 miles per hour.&nbsp; There was talk Monday about the National Guard bringing in the Blackhawk helicopters to help with fire but the wind was too strong. Sheriff Darian Campbell noted during his last press conference that the helicopters could be an option Tuesday if the weather will allow and if they are needed.&nbsp;

Several out of town crews are being sent home and others are heading back to their local stations to rest and get ready for what could be a busy day on Tuesday. The fire department is trying to keep a balance of necessary crews on hand while resting others and sending as much of the mutual aid home as possible.&nbsp; Winds are expected to shift to the west and then north. Wind speeds could reach 45 miles. A section of 108th between Plum and Lorraine was closed for most of the evening due to a downed tree. Crews were working to reopen that road. A fire was called into dispatch at 17th and Willison around 10:45 p.m. but the extent of that fire is not known. RNSO says 4th Avenue is now open again but Plum is closed from 82nd to 108th, 95th is closed from Plum to Lorraine and 30th is closed from Kent to Buhler Rd.

UPDATE: As of 10:30 p.m.: Emergency Management has just given an update on the weather. The major wind shift is still expected between 2 and 3 a.m. with winds moving to the west and then north. Winds could gust as high as 45 miles per hour. Crews are still working in the wooded areas around 43rd between Kent and Willison. Sheriff Darian Campbell provided a press conference around 9:30 p.m. The 95th and Plum fire burned about 300-400 acres in Reno County before moving into McPherson County. About 600 acres burned with the 4th and Willison fire. The volunteer help has been tremendous with several restaurants providing food and drink. Volunteers have also brought out food and help to fire crews through out the afternoon and evening. Mitigation efforts continue in expectation of that wind change overnight. Campbell did confirm that a structure was involved in the fire at 95th and Plum but could not give any further details. Structure crews have been called back to town so they can rest and recharge to help out with the fire during the day Tuesday.&nbsp;

Reno County, Kansas – March 29, 2021 –&nbsp;Reno County&nbsp;Emergency Management, along with fire departments from Reno, Rice, Sedgwick, Harvey, and McPherson counties, are battling a large fire northeast of Hutchinson. The fire was first reported near 4th&nbsp;Ave. and Willison Rd. and spread north quickly due to winds in excess of 50 miles per hour. As of 6:30 p.m., approximately 600 acres have been burned but no reports of structure damage or injuries.

The wind is expected to shift direction around midnight possibly testing the containment lines. “We’re looking at probably four to seven days before we leave this area,” said Doug Hanen, Division Chief of Operations. “It is in very heavy timber all along the west flank. We actually have active bulldozers working at this point trying to cut some fire breaks, it’s still quite a labor-intensive process at this point.”

Another fire is also being worked near 95th&nbsp;and Plum Street and is moving into McPherson County, stretching fire resources thin. The Sheriff is asking the public to please avoid the area of 30th&nbsp;Ave. to 43rd&nbsp;Ave., from Kent Rd. to Buhler Rd. to allow access for fire vehicles. Evacuations are voluntary at this time. If you do choose to evacuate, lock doors, turn on any sprinklers, and the Sheriff Department will be patrolling the area.

UPDATE: As of 8:03 p.m.: Crews still having to deal with strong winds in excess of 50 miles per hour. Fires continue to flare up in the Willison/ Kent fire but as of now the fire is still south of 43rd. Another matter to take care of is that some crews have been out for more than six hours now and trucks are starting to run low on fuel. Fuel trucks have been on hand to fuel vehicles at several areas around the fires. McPherson County has a truck on hand to provide first aid and relief for fire fighters working the 95th and Plum fire which has now moved into McPherson County. Crews have also moved back to 95th and Plum to make sure that area is secured before the wind changes later tonight. A press conference is scheduled for 9:30 at the fire training center. We'll be there and bring you the latest information.

UPDATE: As of 7:25 p.m. : A press conference was held involving Sheriffs Darian Campbell and Doug Hann with Hutch Fire. The Kent/ Willison fire is still be being held at 43rd. Water drops continue. About 600 acres has burned with this fire but no injuries or damage has been reported. East 4th Avenue is now open but motorist are asked to stay away from 30th between Kent and Buhler Road. The 95th and Plum fire has jumped the county line and is now in McPherson County. Crews continue to work structure protection south of that area. No mandatory evacuations were ordered but residents are asked to leave the area if the fire approaches.&nbsp; Works also continues on the south end of these fires are the winds are forecast to shift around midnight.&nbsp;

UPDATE: As of 6:48 p.m. : The 95th and Plum fire has jumped the road at 108th. Fire crews have been moved out of the area. The fire is moving into more open ground which has fewer trees. More help is arriving from outside agencies. Crews were also summon to the 9700 block of N. Plum for a structure fire and crews continue to do structure protection. Fires continue to flare up along the Willison/ Kent fire. Air drops continue in that area as crews try to keep the fire from advancing. The latest forecast calls for wind to start turning around Midnight and should be out of the north around 3 a.m. Fire crews are working to prepare for the shift in the winds which could push the fire to the east and then south.

UPDATE: As of 6:30 p.m. : As crews continue to fight these two fires plans are already being put in place to deal with the wind change that is in the forecast for tonight. Winds are expected to stay brisk at 35-45 MPH as they shift to the west and eventually to the north. Winds are expected to blow at better than 35 MPH through out the day tomorrow. Crews are working to set up burns that they hope will help curb and shift in the fires later tonight. The latest has the wind shifting sometime after 3 a.m. Crews have started the back burn at the 1/2 mile mark of 108th east to Lorraine. Bull dozers and other heavy equipment has been brought in to help free stuck fire trucks which is a common problem for fire fighting in the northern parts of the county.

The 95th Avenue fire is moving north and crews are setting up back fires at 108th between Plum and Lorraine. The fire is also threatening to push east of Lorraine. Air drops continue from the Kansas Forrest Service. Crews are finding water supplies and several businesses are helping out by providing water.&nbsp; As is a normal problem with fires in the north part of the county, trucks are getting stuck out in fields and creek beds.&nbsp;

UPDATE: As of 5:47 p.m.: Crews continue to move north of the 95th and Plum fire. Fire fighters have set up along 108th Avenue to set defensive burns. Crews also working along 43rd between Kent and Willison to fight that fire. Crews also working a fire in southern McPherson County which is forcing response from them. They also have a fire near Marquette in northern McPherson County. Crews are also working to find as many water sources as possible to keep brush trucks filled.&nbsp;

UPDATE: As of 5:24 p.m.: Reno County Emergency Management says that the county has had six fires today along with one just north in McPherson County in the Inman area that is going on at this time.

UPDATE: As of 5:16. Crews continue to battle two fires now. The one from this afternoon is moving to 43rd Avenue and the second one started at 95th and Plum. Crews from McPherson and Rice County's have been called in to help with the second fire.

UPDATE: As of 4:42 p.m.: Another fire has been reported. This is one at Plum and 95th. That area was involved in a fire Yesterday. Multiple crews are heading that way. They are asking Rice and McPherson County if they can send help to deal with the new emergency.

Airdrops were being conducted along 30th Avenue in an effort to stop the fire from crossing the road. Crews are also working to protect buildings in the path of the fire.

UPDATE: As of 3:32 p.m.: Many outside agencies offering aid on the fire. At least four area counties have sent help. Some of the cities responding include: McPherson, Mt Hope, Colwich, Wichita, Inman, Buhler. Air drops continue.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fire crews are battling a large wildfire east of Hutchinson. The call came out around 2:10 p.m. for a fire located between 4th and 17th Avenue along Willison Road. The fire was moving north.&nbsp;

Crews from McPherson, Harvey, and Sedgwick Counties have been summoned for mutual aid.&nbsp;

Winds have been blowing out of the south at better than 40 MPH.&nbsp;

East 4th Avenue is now open but motorist are asked to stay away from 30th between Kent and Buhler Road. The 95th and Plum fire has jumped the county line and is now in McPherson County. Crews continue to work structure protection south of that area. No mandatory evacuations were ordered but residents are asked to leave the area if the fire approaches.&nbsp; Works also continues on the south end of these fires are the winds are forecast to shift around midnight.&nbsp;____________________________________UPDATE: As of 6:48 p.m. : The 95th and Plum fire has jumped the road at 108th. Fire crews have been moved out of the area. The fire is moving into more open ground which has fewer trees. More help is arriving from outside agencies. Crews were also summon to the 9700 block of N. Plum for a structure fire and crews continue to do structure protection. Fires continue to flare up along the Willison/ Kent fire. Air drops continue in that area as crews try to keep the fire from advancing. The latest forecast calls for wind to start turning around Midnight and should be out of the north around 3 a.m. Fire crews are working to prepare for the shift in the winds which could push the fire to the east and then south._______________________________________UPDATE: As of 6:30 p.m. : As crews continue to fight these two fires plans are already being put in place to deal with the wind change that is in the forecast for tonight. Winds are expected to stay brisk at 35-45 MPH as they shift to the west and eventually to the north. Winds are expected to blow at better than 35 MPH through out the day tomorrow. Crews are working to set up burns that they hope will help curb and shift in the fires later tonight. The latest has the wind shifting sometime after 3 a.m. Crews have started the back burn at the 1/2 mile mark of 108th east to Lorraine. Bull dozers and other heavy equipment has been brought in to help free stuck fire trucks which is a common problem for fire fighting in the northern parts of the county.___________________________________________UPDATE: As of 6:10 p.m.: Fire crews working to keep the Willison fire in front of them at 43rd Avenue. Crews still working on structure protection. The 95th Avenue fire is moving north and crews are setting up back fires at 108th between Plum and Lorraine. The fire is also threatening to push east of Lorraine. Air drops continue from the Kansas Forrest Service. Crews are finding water supplies and several businesses are helping out by providing water.&nbsp; As is a normal problem with fires in the north part of the county, trucks are getting stuck out in fields and creek beds.&nbsp;___________________________________________UPDATE: As of 5:47 p.m.: Crews continue to move north of the 95th and Plum fire. Fire fighters have set up along 108th Avenue to set defensive burns. Crews also working along 43rd between Kent and Willison to fight that fire. Crews also working a fire in southern McPherson County which is forcing response from them. They also have a fire near Marquette in northern McPherson County. Crews are also working to find as many water sources as possible to keep brush trucks filled.&nbsp;_________________________________________UPDATE: As of 5:24 p.m.: Reno County Emergency Management says that the county has had six fires today along with one just north in McPherson County in the Inman area that is going on at this time.________________________________________UPDATE: As of 5:16. Crews continue to battle two fires now. The one from this afternoon is moving to 43rd Avenue and the second one started at 95th and Plum. Crews from McPherson and Rice County's have been called in to help with the second fire._______________________________________UPDATE: As of 4:42 p.m.: Another fire has been reported. This is one at Plum and 95th. That area was involved in a fire Yesterday. Multiple crews are heading that way. They are asking Rice and McPherson County if they can send help to deal with the new emergency.__________________________________________UPDATE: As of 4:25 p.m.: Crews have moved north to 43rd Avenue and structure crews continue to protect buildings in the area between Kent and Willison and 30th to 43rd. Fire has now traveled more than two miles in some areas.___________________________________________UPDATE: As of 4:06 p.m. These are the current Road Closings 4th, 17th, and 30th from Kent Rd to Buhler Rd Kent, and Willison from 4th to 30th. Also structure crews are having to respond to a structure fire in the 400 Block of E. Sherman in the city of Hutchinson.&nbsp; HFD is asking for mutual aid for that fire______________________________________UPDATE: As of 3:55 p.m.: Crews continue to fight this fire. The fire has now jumped 30th Avenue and continues to move north. Winds have been gusting to near 50 MPH. Airdrops were being conducted along 30th Avenue in an effort to stop the fire from crossing the road. Prairie Star taking walk ins for COVID-19 vaccine until its gone

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two Hutchinson High School seniors are members of the fourth class of Rudd Scholars and have received full-ride scholarships to Wichita State University.

          Adriana Owens and Kian Williams are among 30 Kansas seniors who will receive a four-year college scholarship as Rudd Scholars. The Rudd Foundation allows its scholars to choose from Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University or Wichita State University. Owens and Williams will attend WSU.

            The Rudd Scholarship covers all remaining tuition and fees, books and supplies and on-campus room and board, after other aid, grants and scholarships are applied to a student’s account. The expected value for the 30 new recipients over four years is approximately $1.1 million.

          With the additional 30 scholars, there are expected to be 103 Rudd Scholars in total this upcoming Fall 2021. This represents approximately a $4 million financial commitment to date since the program’s inception in 2018.

            “We are privileged to announce the exceptionally high-caliber, well-rounded students that were selected as Rudd Scholars this year,” said Darrell Swank, president of the Rudd Foundation. “By removing the financial burden associated with a college education, it is our hope that these individuals will be actively involved on campus, maintain good grades, graduate in four years debt-free and thus be well-positioned to pursue their passions and dreams in whatever vocations they desire.”

            Of the 30 new scholars, 19 will be attending Wichita State, seven at Fort Hays State and four at Emporia State. The scholarship is earned through a competitive selection process that includes the applicant’s grades, test scores, essays, letters of recommendation and, for the 50 finalists, a personal interview. This year’s process involved selecting the 30 winners from a record number of more than 1,300 students from all over the state who began the process.

            “We started the Rudd Scholar Program four years ago and continue to find extremely talented young women and men in our Kansas high schools, who possess the Midwestern values of grit, determination and work ethic, all qualities Mr. Rudd valued,” said Corri Roberts, director of the Rudd Foundation. “We believe by supporting these young leaders to continue their education in Kansas, they will follow their passions and give back to their communities and the state.”

In addition to living on campus and carrying a full load of classes towards their college degree, scholars will receive mentoring and coaching to help them graduate in four years and build essential academic and life skills. They will also participate in developmental activities outside the classroom, network with leaders in their future professions, build relationships among themselves and serve to help the next generation of scholars through an active and connected alumni association after graduation.

            “By this time next year, we will have over 100 Rudd Scholars on campus and supporting one another,” Swank said. “Our intent is that they will continue to network with each other after graduation as they continue on their trajectory of being positive contributors to our Kansas communities and society as a whole.”

Jill White, Director for Patient Care Services at HRMC, said the High 5 for Mom and Baby annual award provides resources and a framework to help Kansas hospitals and birthing centers improve outcomes for breastfeeding women and their infants. Recognition as a High 5 for Mom and Baby facility includes on-going education and training opportunities, support and resources though a community of delivery centers.

“To be selected for this honor, each facility completes a voluntary and self-reported evaluation of at least five evidence-based practices,” White said. “Included in the list of practices is a requirement for hospitals to maintain staff competency in lactation support, assure immediate and sustained skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby following birth, practice ‘rooming,’ which allows mothers and infants to remain together 24-hours per day, and provide all family members with individualized infant feeding guidance and counseling.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Boys and Girls will host their annual Great Futures Golf Tournament May 21 at Crazy Horse Golf Club. Registration for teams and corporate sponsors is underway. According to Lindsay Fields, there are just six team spots remaining.

Players are asked to arrive by 11:30 a.m. for a noon shotgun start. The driving range will open at 11 a.m. Each tournament player receives 2 raffle tickets, a tournament tumbler and a chance to putt for a prize. There will be craft beer tents along the course and Buffalo Wild Wings will provide lunch.&nbsp;

Hole sponsorships are $150 and $250. All proceeds go to benefit the many programs of Boys and Girls Clubs in Hutchinson.

Spots filling up fast for Boys and Girls Club golf tournament

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A traffic stop on Saturday led to the arrest of a Hutchinson woman on suspicion of drug distribution.

Hutchinson Police took 43-year-old Michiele Baggett into custody around 2;40 p.m. for possession of meth with intent to distribute, no tax stamp, and drug possession. She was also arrested for driving while suspended. Baggett was arrested after police stopped her vehicle in the 600 block of South Plum.

A passenger in the vehicle, 35-year-old Christina Walker was issued a notice to appear for shoplifting from an area Dollar General store.

Starting today, Reno County residents age 18 and over are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Governor Kelly announced the statewide transition to Phase 5 in hopes that no vaccine goes to waste. “With the anticipated increase in supply from the federal government, we must get every dose of vaccine into arms quickly,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“I strongly encourage every Kansan to get the COVID-19 vaccine so we can get back to school, back to work, and back to normal.”

As of March 26, 24.06% of Reno County residents have received at least one dose of vaccine. A second dose clinic is scheduled for Saturday, April 3 at the Sports Arena for those who received their first dose there on March 2.

The Reno County Health Department is also operating a vaccination clinic Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church,101 E. 1st&nbsp;Avenue (across from the Post Office). Reno County moves to Phase 5 in vaccinations


WICHITA,
Kan. —Both a Red Flag Warning and a High Wind Warning are in effect at noon Monday. Both warnings last until 10 p.m. Monday.

Extreme grassland fire danger will happen, with sustained wind from the south at 35 to 40 mph and gusts between 50 and 60 miles per hour expected. Relative humidity could drop as low as 18%.

In addition to the fire danger from any random sparks, damaging winds have the potential to blow down trees and power lines.

Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
