HUTCHINSON, Kan. – BrightHouse, a long-time provider of services to assist domestic abuse and sexual assault victims in South-Central Kansas, is pleased to announce a gift of $10,000 from Tyson Foods, Inc.

BrightHouse serves Kingman, Harper, Reno and Rice counties, helping keep survivors safe through a crisis line, emergency shelter, safety planning and links to community resources. The non-profit agency has seen a spike in stalking cases, fueled by new technologies that make it easier for abusers to track victims.

“Gifts like this from Tyson Foods help us to provide the necessary services to people who desperately need assistance to create a safe environment for themselves,” says Sara Alexander, BrightHouse Board President. “We very much appreciate the generosity of Tyson Foods to make Hutchinson a safer place for the community. They are a wonderful community supporter.”

In 2020 alone, Tyson Foods invested more than $75 million to fulfill its commitment to address hunger insecurity, support its team members and help improve the quality of life in communities near Tyson plant locations.&nbsp;

181 rapid response grants from Tyson were awarded for emergency support of nonprofit organizations where the company operates, to help team members and the local communities. This recent donation is an example of the company’s ongoing efforts.

Walk With Ease&nbsp;is a structured walking program that teaches participants how to safely make physical activity part of their everyday life.&nbsp; The program is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain and is also ideal for people without arthritis who wants to make walking a daily habit.&nbsp;

Walk With Ease&nbsp;is a structured walking program that offers support, information, and tools to help participants develop successful exercise routines.&nbsp; Participants will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for 10 minutes of education, warm-up/stretching, then a 5 to 30-minute walk, ending with cool-down/stretching for six-weeks led by a certified instructor. During the program, participants will learn proper stretching and pain management techniques, as well as build stamina and walking pace.&nbsp; The program can even be modified to meet the needs of individual participants so that each person can develop an exercise routine that fits their unique goals.

“Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs and bones,” said Diane Swinney of the Reno County Health Department.&nbsp; “Walking can also help manage weight which can reduce one’s risk for arthritis in the knee, heart disease and diabetes.&nbsp; If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you will most likely have success with&nbsp;Walk With Ease.”&nbsp;

The USD 308 Board of Education heard updates to Academic and Communications strategic planning during its regular meeting Monday (June 28, 2021).

At Monday’s meeting, the USD 308 Board of Education heard presentations from Executive Director of Elementary Education and School Improvement, Rhonda Trimble, and Director of Communications, Marissa Meis, on recent progress on the district’s strategic planning process. Trimble presented updates on KESA (Kansas Education Systems Accreditation) and Meis shared the beginning stages of the strategic plan for the district’s communications department.

USD 308 Board of Education Hears Updates on Strategic Planning

A Hutchinson man was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated arson and criminal threat after an incident Monday.

According to Hutchinson Police Lt. Dustin Loepp, officers were sent just after 5 p.m. Monday to the Kwik Shop at 17th and Plum. 

A 51-year-old woman who drives for Roadrunner Taxi told police she was giving a ride to 35-year-old Jamal Anthony Williams, who she had been dating for a few days. 

Williams had sent her threatening messages on her phone, demanding rides around town and she decided to put a stop to it and headed toward the convenience store. Williams continued making threats and pulled out a lighter and burned a seat inside the vehicle.

Officers found Williams close by and arrested him. He was booked into jail just before 6:30 p.m. Monday. There was only slight damage to the vehicle.

Kan. — The American Red Cross continues to need more donations as life begins to get back to a typical level of activity.

"The Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases and transplants and elective surgeries rise," said Brittney Rochell, Regional Chief Communications Officer for the Red Cross.

Blood donors are needed now to help ensure hospital shelves are stocked with blood products over the Fourth of July holiday and beyond.

"We are really trying to encourage anybody to give blood, but especially if you are Type O," Rochell said. "With less than a half-day supply of Type O in recent weeks, there's an emergency need for Type O donors."

Summer is traditionally a time when blood donations decline due to vacations for those who regularly donate.

"We're encouraging anybody that's given before, or somebody new, that might be a first-time donor," Rochell said. "It's a way to give back to their community."

There are two Reno County blood drives this week in Hutchinson on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Clayworks at 1125 N Main Street and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center at 1701 East 23rd. The annual meeting has been scheduled for the Educational Facilities Authority of Reno County for next month.  

The Authority was organized in 2003 by Hutchinson Community College and USD 308 to facilitate the renovation, improvement, and acquisition of educational and athletic facilities as the College and the District determine to be necessary or desirable for their use and the use of the general public.

The Authority is governed by a seven-member board of directors, three of whom are members of and designated by the College's Board of Trustees and three of whom are members of and designated by the District's Board of Education. The seventh director is chosen by the other six directors from the general public.

Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County Commissioner Ron Sellers sees expanding the Board of County Commissioners from three to five members as a potential positive development.

"It was obvious to me soon after I went on to the commission that three people just doesn't seem to work quite as well," Sellers said. "There's more moving towards the middle with a larger group."

He said commissioners have been presented with a lot of options as to how to divide the county.

"IT people at the county have given us, I believe, 20 different maps to look at. I wish they would have refined that a little bit," Sellers said. "I'm not certain that a map or group of maps makes much difference. I think people will be represented. They have to divide the county into five equal groups. I think one of the things that I feel fairly strongly about is that since Hutchinson is over 60% of the population of the county, that we need to divide this so Hutchinson does have representation."

Sellers said all the maps seem to take that into account.

"The hard part about these maps is because Hutchinson is such a majority of the county, all five districts are probably going to have population within Hutchinson if we go that way," Sellers said. 

That could make things interesting for the rest of the county if people from different parts of the city all decide to run for the county commission, but it depends on which map they choose. In addition, the map will have to be re-divided in 2022 after reapportionment thanks to the 2020 census.

Sellers: More commissioners would move toward the middle

Kan. —&nbsp; A nationwide campaign addressing boating under the influence will take place again this year over Independence Day Weekend. 

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is one of the agencies that participates in Operation Dry Water.

Kansas game wardens are responsible for patrolling the waters of Kansas and conducting boat accident investigations, boat safety inspections, BUI checks, safety programs, education classes and other boating-related activities.

During Operation Dry Water, officers will be looking for boaters whose blood alcohol content exceeds the state limit of 0.08. The weekend will include increased patrols, breathalyzer tests, life jacket checks and boater education.

Impaired boaters can expect to be arrested or face other serious penalties. In Kansas, the consequences for BUI include fines, jail and loss of boating privileges.

Alcohol use continues to be the leading contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities. Since the commencement of the Operation Dry Water campaign in 2009, law enforcement officers across the nation have removed over 4,700 impaired operators from our nation’s waterways, preventing dangerous and potentially catastrophic consequences.

In 2020, 620 agencies from every state and territory took part in the Operation Dry Water weekend.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is one of the agencies that participates in Operation Dry Water.Kansas game wardens are responsible for patrolling the waters of Kansas and conducting boat accident investigations, boat safety inspections, BUI checks, safety programs, education classes and other boating-related activities.During Operation Dry Water, officers will be looking for boaters whose blood alcohol content exceeds the state limit of 0.08. The weekend will include increased patrols, breathalyzer tests, life jacket checks and boater education.Impaired boaters can expect to be arrested or face other serious penalties. In Kansas, the consequences for BUI include fines, jail and loss of boating privileges.Alcohol use continues to be the leading contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities. Since the commencement of the Operation Dry Water campaign in 2009, law enforcement officers across the nation have removed over 4,700 impaired operators from our nation’s waterways, preventing dangerous and potentially catastrophic consequences.In 2020, 620 agencies from every state and territory took part in the Operation Dry Water weekend.

Hutchinson firefighters had to deal with hoarding as they fought a fire late Sunday night in Hutchinson.

Firefighters who arrived just after 10:45 p.m. found heavy fire and smoke showing from the rear of a single story house at 929 West 2nd. 

The one person in the house got out safely.  Fire crews had a difficult time entering the home due to the hoarder like conditions they encountered. The home is uninhabitable. No firefighters were hurt.

The homeowner tried to solve a wasp infestation by burning and smoking out the wasp nests by burning a mattress and ragweed which then started the home on fire.

It’s wheat harvest time in central Kansas! I always know harvest will arrive, but it also always seems to sneak up on me. This year it seems to have snuck up a bit more than usual as we are still catching up from dealing with our wicked weather from a month ago.

We are still replanting fields damaged by hail or flooded by rain. Our days leading up to this year’s harvest have included the regular preparation for summer and harvest, as well as a lot of unanticipated extras. 

Extra time has been needed in the fields replanting, spraying and cultivating while also dealing with insurance claims, adjustors, contractors, windshield repairs, dent repairs and a roofing crew. There’s definitely been a lot of those unexpected extras this year leading up to summer harvest. 

Thankfully, we have wonderful helpers who have been able to assist with the needed annual tasks that must be done prior to and during harvest. From preparing irrigation, laying pipe, servicing the tractors, trucks and combines, helping with irrigation repairs, cutting wheat and delivering the grain, we have a great group of people helping us.

I realized a few days ago this is the first year in a very long time that I do not have a personal helper of my own this summer. Normally I would have a teenage girl helping me with the kids and household chores during the summer months. I called these helpers my “right-hand gals” because the job wasn’t just babysitting.

In the past, I’d be able to leave the kids with my helper when I’d need to quickly drive out to a field to shuttle equipment or crew members to another location. Sometimes I would need to drive to another town to get machine parts. It was wonderful to have a helper who I could leave in charge of the house and kids to be able to complete all the necessary and unscheduled tasks associated with summer and harvest.

My helper’s main role was to keep the day moving forward whether I was at home with the kids or not. At times, the job would require prepping food or baking cookies for our harvest crew. Sometimes it entailed loading and unloading the dishwasher or the laundry. Sometimes it meant reading books to the kids, making sure they were put down for their scheduled naps or lifeguarding when the kids would take an afternoon dip in our stock tank pool.

Having a “right-hand gal” helped keep the kids rested and on a schedule. Summer on the farm and wheat harvest is incredibly exciting to participate in, but it’s also tiring for everyone involved. Between the hot, dry winds constantly blowing, and the long days and nights of work, it’s understandable why adults might — on occasion — get cranky. I’m sure one can imagine how the intense harvest schedule would affect a child if not properly rested! 

But as in all of life, this year I am reminded that seasons continually change, and my right-hand gals are grown and gone. My son has transitioned to helping more on the farm this summer. He’s now shadowing his daddy and grandpa, helping the men service machines by handing them tools, riding in the combine and helping with irrigation. I no longer fill a sippy cup and strap him into his car seat. Instead, he fills his own water jug daily and is doing his part helping with summer tasks on the farm under the supervision of some pretty patient people.

My daughter is now another little helper. She’s transitioned to helping with laundry and baking cookies with her grandma. Now, whenever I have to jump in a vehicle to complete a pressing task, my little assistant is usually with me. Most of the time she’s happy to tag along as long as she has a book or two with her. But sometimes when the day gets tough, the immediate playing of a requested soundtrack and the promise of a frozen drink or popsicle usually helps. 

Yes, I’ve always been aware and thankful for the wonderful help we have especially during the summer months. This year, I have become acutely more aware of the blessing of helpers — both big and small.

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center has been designated one of only two of the state’s 122 hospitals to be designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence® (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Geographically, HRMC is the only hospital in the western two thirds of Kansas to hold this distinction.

The DICOE designation is an achievement beyond accreditation that recognizes best-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care. The evaluation includes a comprehensive assessment of the entire medical imaging enterprise, including structure and outcomes. The DICOE appointment recognizes excellence at multiple levels, including the organization’s staff, technologies, policies and procedures, and superior patient care.

To be eligible for this elite distinction, a facility must be accredited by the ACR in all modalities they provide, and in which the ACR offers an accreditation program. Another requirement is to participate in the Dose Index Registry® and General Radiology Improvement Database, as well as Image Wisely® and Image Gently®.

Raleigh White, Director of Imaging Services at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, reiterated an ACR statement that the ACR/DICOE designation is the pinnacle of ACR accreditations. “This designation is highly sought after and is one that few healthcare organizations have achieved,” White said. “I am proud to have guided the Hutchinson Regional team to this distinction. I accept this honor on behalf of Hutchinson Regional’s Imaging Services board-certified radiologists, technologists, and administrative professionals who deliver high-quality patient care every day.”

Wes Hoyt, Chief Operating Officer for Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, called the designation a one-of-a-kind program in diagnostic medical imaging. “This distinction is aimed at organizations that go beyond the gold standard of ACR accreditations,” Hoyt said. “A great staff at Hutchinson Regional has labored for more than three years on quality, customer service, competencies, standardization, and a host of other factors. "Get to know your neighbor," Beer said. "We get a lot of complaints and the neighbor doesn't know the other neighbor. They call, they don't want to be known, they don't want to be seen. They might have a dog that does not like the loud booms or something like that. Have that discussion with your neighbor prior to shooting the fireworks off. That will take care of 90% of the responses that we go on."

Fireworks safety important as holiday approaches

"AAA is projecting more than 47.7 million Americans will take to the nation's roadways and skies this Independence Day holiday weekend from July 1 to 5. Travel volumes are expected to nearly fully recover to pre-pandemic levels."

This is going to be the second-highest Independence Day travel volume on record, trailing only 2019.

"We're looking at, overall, just 2.5% fewer Americans are expected to travel this year compared to Independence Day in 2019," Steward said. "This represents an increase of nearly 40% compared to last year, when total travel fell to 34.2 million travelers."

Despite the highest gas prices in seven years, more than 91% of holiday travel will be by car.

AAA: Travel almost all the way back for 4th of July

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will take action on a petition that would annex 18 acres of land on the south side of the city for future development.

The land would be used for an industrial zone once all of the necessary hoops are jumped through. City Clerk Merrill Peterson says that the 18 acres of land is designated in the floodplain, which will have to be dealt with. Peterson says no firm plans for the land are in place.

Approval of the petition would be followed by formal action on a&nbsp; resolution to annex the land during next month’s meeting.

Also Tuesday, the council will go over some of the preliminary numbers in the budget. Like most municipalities and government entities, the city is looking to hold the line on the mill levy and is planning to hold hearings and provide notification of going above the revenue neutral mark as now required by the state. City Manager Merrill Peterson says the city financial picture is solid and better-than-expected sales tax revenue is helping with this year's budget.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Buhler City Council begins at 7 p.m. at the Buhler city offices at 219 N. Main.

The board will go over year-end transfers as the new fiscal year kicks off on Thursday, July 1. The board will also look over the fundraising report for the district for the past year. Fundraising activities and events for the district totaled just over $106,000. That number is down because of the pandemic, which hampered many school activities.

The board will also go into executive session to discuss the latest in negotiations between the district and the local teachers union. The two sides meet for another round of negotiations on Monday afternoon.&nbsp;

USD 308 Board meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 48th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl began at a fast and furious pace.

Fittingly, the ninth installment of that movie franchise (F9) dropped in theaters this weekend. The West All Stars struck early on a Ty Sides 59-yard reception courtesy of Andrew Khoury. The 3-play, 61-yard drive took just 50 seconds and came less than three minutes into the game.

That touchdown was the only score for either squad for the next 40 minutes and 31 seconds of game time. In that span, both kickers missed 32-yard field goal opportunities in the same direction.

Shortly after the early strike from the West, the East was poised to tie the game. The East All Stars drove to the West 6 before being pushed back to the 28 yard line on negative plays. The East eventually turned the ball over on downs.

The West went into halftime with a 7-0 lead thanks to Andrew Khoury's 6-of-11 passing for 128 yards and a TD. He would finish the game 9 of 18 for 157 yards.

The East still had an opportunity late to drive the field for a tie, but Trevor Erickson picked off Jackson Miller and put the West back in position for points.

Tanner Cash took advantage of the turnover on a 6-yard TD run with 4:36 left. The 4-play drive covered just 15 yards in 1:50.

Branden Martin was named MVP for the East with his 10 tackles from the linebacker spot.

Ty Sides was named MVP for the West for his 5 receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown.

Andrew Schwinn led the East with 31 yards rushing. Jackson Miller threw for 91 yards. Max Close caught 4 passes for 78 yards. MVP Branden Martin led the defense with 10 tackles.

The West squad was led by Andrew Khoury's 157 passing yards. The rushing attack was led by Tanner Cash's 44 yards. MVP Ty Sides caught 5 balls for 126 yards. Cade Gatschet led the way with 9 tackles, all but one were solo efforts.

The 49th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will be played in Pittsburg July 23, 2022.

2021 Shrine Bowl Parade

The 2021 Kansas Shrine Bowl is much more than a football game. In fact, the goal is to help those that can't help themselves.

"We were real excited to partner Wednesday and Thursday with the Cosmosphere and held our hospital experience event," said B.J. Harris with the Shrine Bowl. "They heard stories about our Shrine patients, what they went through, the impact Shriner's Hospital has made and at that moment, you start to see that flash, where perhaps they showed up at camp, thinking, hey, this is a great thing and I'm going to get better and this is going to make me the greatest athlete. That's true, but it's also about something else. So often, we don't give kids an opportunity to do things outside of themselves and for someone else. What I've told football players over the years is, this will be the one and only time this will not benefit you individually. This is not why you're playing football."

All the students participating, from the players to the cheerleaders to those playing in the band are all high character kids.

"We seek them out," Harris said. "We make it one of the requirements on our nominations is to find good character, have kids that are good in the classroom, know how to mind their Ps and Qs. Some of that's practical. We're relying on them to be good people when they are with us, but they are also a part of our brand. They are stewards of the mission which we are trying to move forward."

Tickets will be available at the gate on Saturday. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for kids.
