HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was jailed following a domestic incident in the city Sunday.

Police responded to the call at 443 E Avenue A but arrived to find the residence quiet. A short time later it was discovered that Demetrius Vansyckle had entered the home of his ex-girlfriend and caused damage to the residence. When she tried to leave he confronted her, got in the vehicle and had her drive hom to an area around 7th and Plum.

He was arrested a short time later and is booked on suspected charges of aggravated kidnapping, domestic battery and criminal damage to property. He’s being held on a bond of $100,750.

Formal charges are expected in the coming days.

Red Cross blood drives continue in the area

NEWTON, Kan. ——Law enforcement authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old Hesston girl and have a juvenile suspect in custody.

Just before 10 p.m. Sunday, the suspect identified as a 16-year-old boy arrived at a house in the 900 block of South Walnut in Newton where a group of teens were hanging out, according to a media release from police.

Witnesses said the boy was visibly intoxicated and was waving around a gun. He pointed the gun at others in the room before fatally shooting the girl.

Witnesses and neighbors attempted to perform CPR and called 911, and the suspect ran from the house.&nbsp; Newton Police arrested the suspect just after 10 a.m. Monday at his house in Newton.&nbsp; Police have not released the name of the suspect or the victim.

Police make arrest for fatal shooting of girl in Newton

TOPEKA, Kan. – <a href="https://www.ksagretailers.org/">Kansas Agribusiness Retailers Association's (KARA)</a> scholarship committee has awarded nearly $10,000 in scholarships to Kansas high school graduating seniors including one from Harvey County. Lucas Wiens from Newton was the recipient of $1,500 from the KARA. He is one of six students to receive funding out of more than 100 applications.

&nbsp;Each year, KARA awards one $500 Jim Lee Memorial scholarship, four $1,500 KARA general scholarships and one $1,500 Dr. David Whitney Agronomy scholarship.

The winners of 2021-22 scholarships are listed below with their current town:

Harvey County student wins ag scholarship

One of the hardest parts about making a new life in Kansas for me has been missing so much of my old life in Wisconsin. In my early years as a Kansan, I longed for things here to feel more like home. Over time my appreciation for Kansas has grown, and it has begun to feel like home to me. I didn’t realize until recently that the trade-off for this connection and comfort to my new home state was made possible by drifting further from my old one.

Since I left for college more than 15 years ago, I always managed to make a handful of trips home each year. With COVID, my visits were limited, and the time between felt somehow longer.

Over the Fourth of July holiday, I returned to my childhood home for a visit. As I drove into town around midnight, I felt tired from the 12-hour trek, but I kept blinking my eyes because everything seemed strange.

Things felt smaller — the buildings, the distance between streets. Trees and other vegetation seemed bigger, like they were swallowing up the road. The pavement seemed to be faded and cracked in a way I had never noticed before. Barns and sheds I swear were in good shape the last time I drove by are falling down.  

For a few days, it was like having a surreal dream in which I knew the places, people and sites around me but they were all somehow slightly foreign to me.

On my trip home, I was thinking about why things had felt so different and a light bulb went off in my head. The place where I grew up was no longer mine.

The nostalgia of our childhoods is powerful. These places grew us, and it can devastating to lose the physical connection to them.  A person can know that the home of a long-gone, beloved relative has been demolished and still have their heart skip a beat when they see the reality replacing the faded memory. Alumni can be aware of a school merger changing the name, mascots and colors but not realize how bizarre it will feel to see a new team playing on the same field they once occupied.

It was a bittersweet recognition I am an outsider in my hometown. My parents’ home will always be my childhood home, but it is no longer my home. The town is full of people and places that evoke fond memories and have a special place in my heart, but I am no longer a part of their community.

When we no longer own these places, it can be hard for our hearts to let go because there was too much life played out in these spaces.

My realization actually gave me comfort because it reminded me how fortunate I am to have found a new home that I love. Letting my mental allegiance shift from my childhood hometown to my forever hometown has create the room in my life to make a full commitment to the life I am living here in Kansas.

To make the most of my new home, I am going to do my best to be present and cherish everyday moments with people that make me feel at home. Take pictures of the special things I want to remember for years to come. And depart your everyday places with a grateful heart because it could be your last visit, and there really is no place like home.

Insight: No Place Like Home

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 46th meeting of the Equus Beds Groundwater Management District is set for Thursday, July 15, in Halstead.&nbsp;

“We always do a presentation on what we did the year before and what we’re working on this year,” GMD-2 General Manager Tim Boese said. “We’ll also look at our proposed 2022 budget. We have nine board of directors and there’s always three up for election and we’ve got five people running for three slots this year.”&nbsp;

One of those running is incumbent David Bogner of Reno County. Boese says that part of the meeting will deal with what lies ahead for the water district, which includes tackling water usage rates in the northern part of the district.

“We’re looking at possibly some new monitoring wells in the Burrton area. We’re working with the Kansas Corporation Commission to install some new monitoring wells and possibly replace some of those,” Boese said. “We’re also working on our safe field regulation, particularly for an area up in McPherson and Northern Harvey County, and modifying that regulation and adjusting the safe field.”

The safe field is part of an overall look at how a new water use permit will affect the underground water table. While the regulations could have an impact in those counties, the city of McPherson is not part of the possible changes.

“Around the city of McPherson has been closed since 1980 to any new permits,” Boese said. “We’re mostly looking south of that area.”

The city of McPherson continues to suffer from some water shortages and may be looking into Harvey County to alleviate some of those issues.&nbsp;

“The city of McPherson is actually working on a new well field about 15 or 16 miles south of the city of McPherson, clear down in Harvey County,” Boese said. “They’ve got a plan going forward that should get them by for the next 50 years, roughly.”

Boese also says they continue to monitor the water usage around Pretty Prairie, which has had restrictions in place for the past decade or so.&nbsp;

The GMD also continues the legal process regarding a proposal by the city of Wichita to change the way they take water from the Equus Beds. That issue may stretch into the fall before any decision is made, according to Boese.

Equus Beds GMD annual meeting Thursday

NICKERSON, Kan. — Even though students will get their meals for free next school year, the Nickerson USD 309 School Board will still have to take action on meal prices for adults when it meets on Monday.&nbsp;

Because of the continued state of pandemic, the USDA has mandated that all students enrolled in pre-K to 12th grade be allowed to eat both breakfast and lunch free. So there will be no charges for student lunch and breakfast for 2021-22. However, the board will decide if meals for adults should be increased from $3.50 to $4 per meal.&nbsp;

The board will seek approval to spend $17,039 on new band instruments for the high school. The purchase would be the second of two major purchases of band instruments as the district makes a major overhaul of the band equipment. The first half of those purchases was made last month.

Also Monday, the board will go over several hirings, take action on a salary increase for classified staff and go into executive session regarding negotiations on a new contract for the district's faculty. The board will elect a new president and vice president for the new fiscal year and go over the usual appointments and designations.

USD 309 to discuss meal prices and band instruments Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Several area lakes remain under watches or warnings for blue-green algae. With the hot weather, the number of lakes infested with the green surface slime is increasing.&nbsp;

Marion County Lake and Harvey County East Lake near Newton are both under algae watches. Marion Reservoir is still under an algae warning.&nbsp;

All livestock and pets should be kept away from the water. The Marion County lakes have been under the advisories for a month. Harvey County East Lake was closed to boating and fishing last week.&nbsp;

Exposure to blue-green algae during swimming, wading and water-skiing can lead to rashes, skin, eye irritation and effects such as nausea, stomach aches, and tingling in fingers and toes.

Visitors may fish at the lakes, but only the fillet portion should be consumed. The KDHE issues the algae advisories every Thursday during the summer months. No other lakes in the area are under any advisory at this time.

With the hot weather, the number of lakes infested with the green surface slime is increasing.&nbsp;Marion County Lake and Harvey County East Lake near Newton are both under algae watches. Marion Reservoir is still under an algae warning.&nbsp;All livestock and pets should be kept away from the water. The Marion County lakes have been under the advisories for a month. Harvey County East Lake was closed to boating and fishing last week.&nbsp;Exposure to blue-green algae during swimming, wading and water-skiing can lead to rashes, skin, eye irritation and effects such as nausea, stomach aches, and tingling in fingers and toes.Visitors may fish at the lakes, but only the fillet portion should be consumed. The KDHE issues the algae advisories every Thursday during the summer months. Algae alerts still in place at 3 area lakes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners are trying to hold the line on the budget and stay revenue neutral under the state’s new guidelines. County Administrator Randy Partington says the recent budget meetings went well.

“The county commission had a lot of great questions for the departments and some of the outside agencies and fire districts for making their requests known,” Partington said. “At the end, the county commission gave me some direction to make a few cuts.”

Partington says cuts have been made in several areas with the hope of bringing the county’s mill levy in under 40 mills for the year.

“They wanted the museum's request to go back to the 2021 budget amount, which was about a $25,000 cut,” Partington said. “They wanted a small cut from the county fair . . . I pulled $1,500 out of that so they get a $2,000 increase.”&nbsp;

The cuts also went along personnel and capital purchase line items.

“Some of the other cuts that the commission wanted me to look at is the reduction of one vehicle purchase for the sheriff’s office in their capital. That’s about a $37,000 cut,” Partington said. “A cut of $15,000 from the district attorney’s office personnel line item, which was for leave payout.”&nbsp;

That payout is for offset costs to the office to pay out vacation time for employees who retire or leave the office.

If the cuts fall into place, the county will see the mill levy fall to 39.4 from 41.6 mills, or about 5%. That does not include the fire, sewer and water districts budget, which will be above the revenue neutral level.

The commissioners will go over the budget again during a meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Commission wants revenue-neutral budget

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Hutchinson Fire Crews responded to the Reno County Landfill Friday night for a fire in one of the disposal pits.

First arriving crews found a 40-foot area on fire spreading rapidly by the south winds. Crews contacted landfill staff and began large water operations to keep from spreading and damaging the liner and methane wells. Crews hauled water from Mohawk Road with the assistance of extra water tenders from Reno County Fire District 3 and 8

Landfill staff were able to use their heavy equipment to move the burning material out of the pit and to an area where it could be covered with dirt. Landfill staff stated they had a lot of unspent fireworks arriving Friday at the landfill, most likely some were able to get in the pit. Fire Department and landfill staff would like to remind people to dispose of spent and unspent fireworks properly.

The department was assisted by the South Hutchinson Police Department and Reno County Sheriff’s Department for bringing out light towers to assist with night operations. Reno County Fire Districts 3 and 8, Hutchinson, Reno County Emergency Communications, Reno County Emergency Management, and Reno County Landfill Employees also assisted.

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven USD 312 Board of Education will meet on Monday to kick off the new fiscal year. That meeting will include the usual appointments and designations to start the year.

Once that is done, the board will take action on several personnel matters and go into executive session regarding negotiations. The board will also take a look at the 2022 budget and discuss whether it can stay revenue neutral under the new state budget guidelines. Discussion will include a possible meeting set for Aug. 3 to go over the numbers.

If approved, the revenue neutral hearing and budget hearing would be held Sept. 13.

Monday's meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the school district offices at 414 W. Main.

Haven School Board kicks off new fiscal year Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Motorists who use U.S. 50 between Hutchinson and Emporia will see some improvements as part of a $776 million road plan announced by KDOT over the past several days.

U.S. 50 will get extended passing lanes northeast of Walton in Harvey and Marion counties, just west of Peabody, and another stretch five miles east of Burrton. Other similar projects are also planed for the highway in Ford and Edwards counties in western Kansas.

The improvements are still a ways off as most of the work won't be for bid until 2023.

US 50 to see passing lane expansion in Harvey and Marion counties

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police Department Detective Jessica Kelly has been awarded the National 2021 Child Advocacy Partner of the Year award, &nbsp;which was only given to four people or organizations in the United States.

Detective Kelly was awarded as an individual for Child Advocacy Partner of the Year for her work with abused children in Hutchinson. HPD says Kelly regularly sacrifices her own time to go out of her way to provide any support needed to pursue justice for children, making sure each of them know she supports them no matter what.

The Child Advocacy Partner of the Year award specifically celebrates MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) members who work alongside child advocacy centers. Nominees may include individuals or organizations working in child protection services, law enforcement, prosecution, medical, mental health, or another MDT member. The goal is to recognize a child advocacy center partner who has excelled in advancing justice and healing for children.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair Board took another step in getting a new general manager in place. According to Harmon Bliss, the fair interviewed a candidate on Tuesday.

Bliss says eight candidates sent in applications. Of those eight, interviews were given to two potential candidates. A second interview was given to one of those two during the board's monthly meeting.

If all goes as planned, a special meeting will be held in the near future and that person could be offered the job at that time.&nbsp;

The person chosen would replace interim GM Ed Berger, who replaced Robin Jennison, who resigned from the fair last year.

That includes the election of a new board president and vice president and the usual appointments and designations.&nbsp;

Once the board gets down to business, the board will have to deal with putting a Narcan policy into place. With the opioid crisis in the area, the district will go over a new policy to have Narcan nasal spray in place for students, employees and other individuals. The Narcan would be in every school building, and any nursing or non-nursing employee may possess and administer Narcan after training.

Also Monday, the board will go into executive session to discuss contract negotiations with the teachers union, mileage rates for the year and go over the gifts to the school district.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced&nbsp; Friday that State Fair Road from Main to Plum will be closed starting Monday morning.

Weather permitting, work crews will be doing a mill and overlay of the street. The road is expected to be open again by the end of the day Wednesday.

State Fair Road closed starting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A&nbsp; Hutchinson man had charges of kidnapping and stalking against him dismissed Thursday morning by the Reno County District Attorney’s office.

The kidnapping charge against 56-year-old Thomas Lee Boyd was dismissed without prejudice, which means charges can be refiled at a later date.

Boyd was arrested following an incident involving a Hutchison woman after he allegedly followed her in her vehicle, then confronted her May 9. Andrew Davidson with the District Attorney’s office stated that, after a second interview between law enforcement and the victim, the charges were dismissed.

Boyd is still being held in the Reno County Correctional Facility on a bond of $125,000 for other pending cases against him.

Kidnapping charges against Hutchinson man dismissed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three Hutchinson High School students earned a total of four perfect scores on their exams, as the final scores of the International Baccalaureate (IB) exams were announced Monday.&nbsp;

Jacob Unruh in history, Koby Harding in biology, and Will Jackson in Spanish and biology reached perfection on their tests. It's the most in school history. The 2021 class of Hutchinson High School had 15 diploma and career-related candidates, with all earning their IB Diplomas.

The International Baccalaureate program offers a premier college preparation curriculum that has two categories, with the opportunity to earn a full diploma or career-related diploma. The full diploma program includes six IB courses and focuses on a specific subject of study, such as biology or history. The career-related program is taken in conjunction with Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) and focuses on career readiness.

Hutchinson High School began its partnership with the IB program in 2004 and added the career-related option in 2014.

Three HHS students post perfect scores on IB tests

NORTON Kan.—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 10:30p.m. Thursday in Norton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a pickup driven by&nbsp; 35-year-old Edgar D.&nbsp;Jaime Holguin, of McPherson, was on U.S. 383 one half mile northeast of the K-60 Junction when he rear ended another truck driven by 26-year-old Chance Stout of Emporia.

EMS transported Holguin to the hospital in Norton. Stout and two passengers in the second vehicle were not injured. All four were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

"Here in Kansas, the prices most recently have been fairly stable," Steward said Thursday. "Today, we're at $2.87 a gallon on average across the state. That's the same as we were a week ago and only one cent more than we were a month ago."

In Reno County, prices are holding as well.

"Reno County is at $2.86 a gallon," Steward said. "That's one cent less than the state average."

Steward notes that there is a lot of uncertainty in the crude oil market coming soon, with OPEC not meeting as planned and the Atlantic hurricane season still active, there are many forces that could raise crude oil prices and ultimately pump prices in the coming months.

AAA: Gas prices fairly stable even in summertime in Kansas

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The South Hutchinson Fire Department has been awarded approximately $19,000 in grant funding to purchase six radios to replace outdated units that will no longer be supported by their manufacturer. The total value of the Motorola radios is $22,860.72. With the grant, the city’s share is approximately $4,500.

“We are extremely thankful for these grants which will ensure our firefighters can effectively communicate with each other and dispatch during critical life saving moments,” Chief Shae Barajas-Brooks said, who was responsible for writing and submitting the grant applications.

The grant funding comes from two sources with different city matching requirements. The Kansas Forestry Service awarded a 50/50 grant of up to $9,000 for the purchase of two radios and other accessories in May. The second grant was through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program through FEMA which contributed $15,240.74 towards the purchase of four radios.

These radios are essential, but costly for every fire department. Over the last few years, the department has been methodically replacing the radios through various methods so that it does not get hit all at once with a significant expense.

These grants are extremely important when it comes to augmenting the annual budget of a department that relies significantly on volunteers.

“Barajas-Brooks is constantly seeking out ways to leverage our limited funds and she is doing a tremendous job when it comes to securing grant funding for our department,” City Administrator Joseph Turner said.

The new radios are expected to be fully purchased and integrated into the department within the next couple of months.

South Hutch Fire receives much-needed grants

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident near South Hutchinson Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

The Reno County Sheriff’s Department reports that 70-year-old Joye Friesen was going east on Blanchard SW when her van hit a pickup driven by 21-year-old Daniel Hernandez who was going south on Broadacres Road. The Hernandez vehicle then rolled over before coming to rest on its top.

Friesen was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Hernandez was evaluated by EMS but was not transported. He was cited for failure to yield. The accident happened just before 9:30 a.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — KDHE’s mobile lab will be back in Hutchinson for the next four Wednesdays to administer COVID-19 and Hepatitis A vaccines, along with rapid COVID testing. The first 30 individuals to receive a vaccine each day will be given a $15 meal coupon for Applebee’s in Hutchinson. No appointment is needed, limit one coupon a month. The lab will be set up at the Salvation Army, 700 N. Walnut Street, Hutchinson, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on July 14, 21, 28 and August 4. All services are free and confidential. 

“We are excited to team up with the Thrive Corporation to offer a meal at Applebee’s,” said Reno County Health Department Director Karla Nichols. “COVID is still a threat in our community, especially with the rise of Delta variant cases in Kansas. Vaccinating is still the best line of defense we have right now.”

Reno County also saw a rise of Hepatitis A cases this spring. Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis A Virus (HAV). The virus is usually spread through close personal contact with an infected person or through eating contaminated food or drink. Common symptoms of the disease include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, and fever. The best way to prevent hepatitis A is to be vaccinated with the full, two-dose series.

KDHE bringing mobile lab to Hutchinson for Hep A, COVID vaccines

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man who entered guilty pleas to more than a dozen counts in five different cases is scheduled for sentencing Friday afternoon in Reno County District Court.

Scott Lutz entered the pleas in May to numerous counts of possession of meth with intent to sell, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, several counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and three counts of felony flee and elude.

Under the plea agreement, Lutz will not be able to appeal the cases, nor will he be able to withdraw his plea at a later date. His attorney will be able to argue a departure of sentence and whether the sentences in each case will run consecutive or concurrent to each other during Friday’s hearing.
