HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Nickerson will keep its sales tax rate the same after voters Tuesday agreed to extend a one-cent sales tax that otherwise would have ended in 2022.
The vote was 99 to 32 in favor of keeping the tax.
The sales tax was first approved by a vote of the public in 2012. The tax funded the new community center. Once that was finished, the sales tax came up for extension in 2017. City residents again approved the tax for sewer line and park improvements. The council approved adding sidewalk improvements and an overall upkeep of the city to the sales tax question this time around. The park and sewer line improvements also remained on the resolution.
With the recent increase in sales tax revenue, the city takes in about $75,000 per year.
The final canvass of the election is November 9.
