HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Superior Boiler announced today that Matt Steele has been named Vice President, Sales &amp; Marketing for Superior Holding.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In his new role, Steele will lead the sales and marketing initiatives for all Superior Holding businesses, which manufacture products in three Hutchinson, Kansas, facilities. He joins Superior after working in executive sales and operations positions for companies that manufacture highly engineered technical products. Most recently, he was Vice President of Operations for a mid-Missouri-based company involved with highly engineered heat transfer products. Steele has extensive sales experience, with some of the world’s largest companies as customers.

Kan. — The COVID-19 case numbers appear to be falling slightly as of the Monday report on the county's dashboard.

Case count in Reno County is down to 625 as of Monday. It was as high as 680 on the 14th. Of the 8,935 resolved cases (either recovery or death) 155 have died, for a death rate of 1.7%.

We are awaiting the latest hospitalization numbers from Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, though the county dashboard shows only seven Reno County residents hospitalized as of Monday.

Vaccination is still not much above what it has been in recent weeks, with 29,480 county residents having received at least one shot, which is a little less than half of all residents and between 50 and 60 percent of those who are vaccine eligible, which right now is 12 and over, though Pfizer announced what may be promising results in a trial for those ages 5 to 11.

29,480 vaccinated plus 8706 recovered equals 38,186 of 62,450 total residents, for a total of 61.1% with some type of immunity, though that number could be marginally higher or lower based on fully undiagnosed cases that recovered or those who both had COVID and chose to be vaccinated, which would put them on both lists.

Case count down slightly, overall immunity numbers creeping up

The SW Bricktown Fiesta is coming up Saturday night.

"This year, we kind of opted out on the National Night Out and we decided to do a Hispanic festival in September," said Jesse Juma. "I saw Oscar Garcia at another concert and I said, could you ask your dad, would you think you guys would be able to get back together again? They haven't played in about eight years since they took a hiatus. I said, do you think your dad's band would get back together again for this Fiesta? I think Oscar and I both thought it was a reach, but he goes, yeah, I'll ask my dad. His dad turned around and came back and said yes."

Grupo Eclipse is getting the band back together and Garcia said it took some work to get things going again.

"We did have a bunch of guys throughout the years," Garcia said. "We figured there's 16 of us total. I played in the band for about 20 of those and I go to practice, and I couldn't just pick up the bass and play just about every song, because I didn't play them all. It was kind of a learning experience for all of us."

Though the celebration is commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month, other bands will also take the stage Saturday.

"O.T., I think he's pretty well known around the community, him and his son, Troy Tolbert are 3X1, we also have the Vieyra Brown Curiel Band, they offer a variety of different types of music," Garcia said. "The reason we're doing this is we want this to be more of a multicultural event. We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, but we also want to bring everybody together, reunite the community and celebrate."

The event is from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at SW Bricktown Park at 300 West Sherman in Hutchinson.

Haven City Council meets this evening

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair has made its run and now it's time to look over the past ten days.

“I think overall everyone was extremely happy with everything,” GM Bryan Schulz said. “ We had great entertainment, great food, we had great things going on the grounds that kept people occupied while they were here.”

While there were some holes in some areas where vendors decided to skip this year there were other areas that excelled well beyond expectations.

“We did talk to the carnival yesterday. They said that&nbsp; 2019 was a record for them and had said this year will even break that record,” Schulz said. “Our attendance at the concert was...very good. And again, I think there were so many opportunities for people to come out and just get out and about.”

The fair staff wont have long to get the grounds cleaned up as another major event comes to the grounds.

“Obviously this week is clean up week and try to get the grounds back in place because we do have the Junior Livestock (Show) coming in here shortly,” Schulz said. “We will be sitting down as a team to start looking at next year. The good that happened this year, maybe there were some holes that happened that we can make sure get filled.

The official attendance numbers for the fair won't be known for a few days but Schulz did say that the last Saturday of the fair likely surpassed 50,000.

2021 Kansas State Fair finishes its run; positive for carnival

Every so often I have the opportunity to visit a classroom full of elementary students and read a book to them. More often than not, I’ve accomplished my guest reading visits using virtual platforms that so many are now accustomed to using. Thanks to technology, and a decent internet connection, I’ve been able to read to classrooms hours away from our farm. 

While the books I read vary depending on the grade level of students, the subject matter and the conversations we have following ultimately always focus on agriculture.

It’s a time I truly look forward to as it allows this former teacher to briefly get back into a classroom and get kids excited about reading while also sharing our farm with them.

After reading, the students and I spend time talking about the story and they can ask me questions about my farm. While I never really know the direction the students’ questions may go, I do know a lot of elementary-aged children are very curious about how many dogs and cows I have on my farm. I also know that during every single one of my visits, without fail, I will have a child inquire about my favorite crop.

While I generally answer that question diplomatically — just as a parent would if asked who their favorite child is — the reality is that while I value and appreciate all of the plants we grow on our farm, I do give one of our crops a bit more attention than the others.

Our popcorn crop receives a lot of my time and focus throughout the year. It’s the smallest crop we grow based on the total number of acres, but it’s definitely the one I spend a lot of my thoughts on.

Maybe it’s because we’ve only grown popcorn for a handful of years, making it the “baby” of the farm. Maybe it’s because it requires a bit more attention and TLC compared to the other crops.

Maybe it’s the fact that we market it directly to consumers, which is different compared to our other commodities. 

Like a doting parent, the popcorn is also the most photographed on our farm — second only to my own two children. My cellphone is full of images I’ve captured of this crop’s milestones throughout the growing season. From observing the small seeds getting planted into the soil, celebrating when tiny plants emerge from the earth, and cheering them on as they develop and grow larger and larger by the day. It’s all documented.

Whether it’s the threat of weather in our area, making sure the plants are getting plenty of water during the hot days of summer, or obsessing over the moisture content of the kernels leading up to harvest, I definitely fret over the popcorn a bit more as well. 

I always experience a sense of relief when we get the combine into the field and finally begin picking the corn. I’m calmed once we safely tuck the grain away into its bin for storage until it’s time to send it off to be cleaned, sorted and bagged. And I can also breathe easier knowing when the grain has safely arrived at its destinations.

So, while I can honestly say that I appreciate all of the plants that we grow on our farm equally as they provide my family with the life we have, I find myself quite fond our little popcorn crop. It might be the smallest, but it definitely receives the mightiest amount of my attention annually.

Insight: A Farmer's Pet

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will approve its version of the ARPA listening resolution during its regular meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;

ARPA is the American Rescue Plan Act, where federal money is being passed on to local jurisdictions to assist with infrastructure.

The resolution says that the city will listen to feedback given through the public meetings of the ARPA taskforce, however just as the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/18990567-ac45-4461-aeba-e67e369b4aeb">county's resolution approved last week did</a>, the final paragraph notes that the governing body has sole discretion over how the money is spent, subject to federal guidelines and that the governing body will not be bound by any task force recommendations.

The City Council will also have its regular consent agenda and comments from members and from City Manager Jeff Cantrell.

The Hutchinson City Council meets Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at City Hall.

Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters dealt with a couple of minor fire calls over the weekend.

The first was Friday evening, when crews responded just after 5 p.m. to 100 East 10th for a fire in a detached garage. The fire was quickly contained to the garage.  Crews had to work around a live power line that had dropped in the alleyway from the fire coming off the building. 

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no was hurt.

The second call was Sunday afternoon, fire crews worked a small brushfire that got into some hay bales in the 4300 block of Lorraine.&nbsp;

Lorraine was briefly closed from 43rd to 56th while crews worked Sunday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police Chief Hooper swore in four new members to the HPD family during a ceremony held at the law enforcement center. It includes officer Manuel Luna.

Luna is a 2012 Hutchinson High School graduate who studied criminal justice at Hutchinson Community College.

Animal Shelter Technician Zane Nichols, Animal Shelter Associate Mindy Stringer and Police Service Aide Shyanne Henkis were also sworn in Friday.

Four new HPD employees sworn in

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – After an 18-month hiatus, the Dillon Lecture Series returns Tuesday with a speech by former Air Force One Commander Colonel Mark Tillman. The lecture will be held Tuesday, September 21 at 10:30 am at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Chosen as the nation's 12th Presidential pilot, Colonel Tillman served as pilot and commander of Air Force One from 2001-2009. Col. Tillman was at the controls of Air Force One through numerous national events. Most notably, he protected the President on September 11, 2001 by keeping him out of harms way and connecting the flying oval office to the nation's first responders.

Another historic event was being the first pilot to fly the Commander-in-Chief into a war zone. The challenge was unprecedented--transport the most targeted man in the world into the heart of terrorism. One mistake would have left the President open to attack and cost the lives of US service members. Col. Tillman personally orchestrated and executed the covert operation with flawless success. His planning, done in complete secrecy, allowed for a complete surprise to the entire world.

Dillon Lecture Series resumes Tuesday

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss says supply chain issues that are keeping vehicles from being built in the U.S. have many causes.

"We've got a real shortage of truck drivers out there," Goss said. "We've got some bottlenecks in terms of shipping, the ports. Some of that's tied to inability to get workers. Workers still have not come back. We're talking about the labor participation rate. That's the percentage of workers over 16 that are in the workforce. That has not revived for the nation yet. We're seeing that the unemployment rate has come down."

Goss believes that the final version of the so-called infrastructure bill still working its way through the Senate will be smaller before it gets done.

"Senator Joe Manchin says you've got to stop this," Goss said. "He's cutting and cutting, he wants a lot of it cut out. You've got Senator Bernie Sanders saying, I already compromised. I wanted $6 trillion and you cut it down to $3.5 trillion. Well, he's going to have to."

The supply chain doesn't care what kind of supplies it's running, when you have less of things, it inflates the prices of those things.

"I eat this, it's called Crackling Oat Bran for breakfast," Goss said. "You can't get it. I saw a bid, it's up to $11 per box. That's up from about $3.50 a box, it's amazing. We're seeing this push, we have a bidding war for my Crackling Oat Bran, I guess. It's just quite amazing for Americans to go into their grocery store and find some of the shelves empty."

Until the supply chain on employees refills, there will continue to be holes in the supply chain for everything from car computer chips to Crackling Oat Bran.

Goss: Supply chain of goods and employees creating issues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — U.S. Sens. Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded Reno County nearly $200,000 to build up emergency medical services in rural communities. Recruitment and retention of quality personnel is the No. 1 issue facing EMS today.

“EMS technicians are vital in providing pre-hospital treatment, and their level of care often is the difference between life and death,” Sen. Marshall said. “In addition to emergency incidents, EMS providers are facing other public health issues, such as COVID-19, illegal and prescription drug misuse, and mental health crises. Increased training and other proactive measures will help these health care heroes improve their skillsets and reduce burnout.”

“Too often rural communities lack access to resources that treat mental health and substance abuse disorders,” Sen. Moran said. “This grant will better equip EMS technicians to identify and handle mental health and substance abuse emergencies, consequently saving lives. Additionally, this grant invests in the mental health of our emergency responders to make certain they are receiving the resources necessary to protect their own mental health.”

“The Rural EMS Training Grant will be very helpful in addressing the training needs of EMS providers in Reno County and provide opportunities to bolster the number of providers with our rural EMS agencies. The grant will be used to provide comprehensive education on behavioral health emergencies and address the substance abuse crisis impacting our rural community. The grant funding will used to provide continuing education to existing EMS providers and scholarships will be available for EMT classes to recruit new providers. The grant will allow us to take these essential steps to retain and recruit quality EMS providers to our community,” EMS Chief Dave Johnston said.&nbsp;

The Rural Emergency Medical Services Training Grant, funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, aims to recruit and train EMS personnel in rural areas. Specifically, Reno County EMS will use the funds to recruit and train quality EMS providers focusing on addressing mental health and substance use disorders in emergency settings. The grant aims to address increasing rates of substance use disorders, fatal overdoses and mental health crises.

Reno County EMS will leverage various health care organizations to improve EMS in rural communities. Operated by Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Reno County EMS will partner with Horizons Mental Health Center and other rural EMS providers in Haven and Pretty Prairie. They will also provide scholarships for EMT students at Hutchinson Community College. In total, Reno County EMS received $188,596. They were among 32 grantees across the country to receive an award.

Reno Co. gets grant for EMS

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Department has released the names of the two victims in a double homicide that occurred Aug. 27.

The victims have been identified as 56-year-old Marion Edward Bates and 58-year-old Phillip Duane Anstine.

Kyle Hardwick is charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder and one count of theft. The murder charges carry a life sentence without parole for 50 years. Hardwick was arrested in Maize Sept. 1 after being listed as a person of interest when two bodies were discovered at a property in eastern Reno County.

Deputies were sent to that location for a check welfare call for a missing person. While searching the property, deputies believed they found the missing person, so they got a warrant to search the entire property and found a second man dead.

Other than the names of the victims, no other information was released.

Work crews will be finishing up improvements at the Hutchinson Amtrak Station, including the installation of a new sewer line. Access to alleyways and parking lots will still be available. The closure is expected to last three weeks.

Walnut to close near train station starting Monday

WASHINGTON, D.C. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann led a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressing deep concerns about the Biden Administration's handling of evacuating American citizens from Afghanistan and negotiations leading to the payment of ransoms. U.S. Rep. and Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks (R-IN), U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), and 19 other Republican Study Committee members joined Rep. Mann on the letter.

"The American people deserve to know whether the United States has provided any financial assistance to the Taliban in exchange for the release of American citizens, or whether the Taliban has requested such assistance, which amounts to ransom," Mann said. "The State Department owes the American people an answer regarding whether President Biden has given the Taliban the upper hand and put the United States in the position of funding a terrorist regime to get our fellow citizens home."

The members stated any negotiations leading to a form payment of ransom will give the Taliban resources that could be used to attack the United States and its allies.

Rep. Mann and his colleagues also requested that the Biden Administration be fully transparent by providing copies of all diplomatic documents and communications pertaining to unfreezing former Afghan government assets and sanctions relief to the Taliban within 10 days of their request.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kan. — Gas prices this week locally are exactly where they were last week.

"Today, we're looking at $2.91 a gallon as the Kansas statewide average," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "That's exactly the same as where we were a week ago. We really haven't seen much, if any, fluctuation in Kansas this week. Reno County is currently 2.92 a gallon, one cent higher than the statewide average."

Kansas gas is 9th cheapest in the U.S., but it's still not as good as last year.

"A month ago, we were at $2.94, that's three cents less than where we were a week ago," Steward said. "A year ago at this time we were at $1.98 in Kansas."

Fundamentals could take prices down in the coming weeks, as well.

"We're getting to that point where we can switch back away from the summer blends of gasoline," Steward said. "Usually, that happens in the fall. Also, of course, this time of year we start seeing a reduction in demand for gasoline as summer vacations are over and there's just fewer people on the roads."

The hurricanes in the Gulf in recent weeks have put upward pressure on the national prices in the short term.

There were 1,326 area residents out of work compared with 1,415 in July. The unemployment rate fell in most area counties as companies pushed to fill vacancies.

The states unemployment rate stayed at 3.8% with just over&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;58,000 Kansans looking for work.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A small fishing lake at Wheatland Park in Buhler is off the latest list of lakes infested with toxic algae. The Buhler City Lake was removed from the list by the KDH&amp;E.

Still the lakes available for local boating and swimming are getting slim. Cheney Reservoir is under a watch for algae in certain areas of the lake. Marion Reservoir and Marion County Lake are under algae warnings along with Harvey County East Lake and Lake Afton near Goddard.

All contact with the water should be avoided in those areas. The blue green algae is toxic to animals and can cause health problems in humans.

"We'll have annual training out there for all of our department," Vance said. "The courses will include everything, including basic handgun, rifle, SWAT schools and open range days. The Sheriff's Office provides ammunition and an instructor to all of our employees twice a month for them to come out on their own time where we can kind of give them one-on-one training to make sure they are proficient when they are out in the public. We also have snipers on our team. I've also been talking to the Hutchinson Correctional Facility who has snipers. They don't have the ability to shoot long range at their current facility, so that's something they would like to take advantage of potentially in the future. We also have a 19,000 pound armored vehicle. As part of the SWAT team with the Sheriff's Office, there's specialty types of trainings that we would have to do with that to keep everybody current and able to drive that large equipment."

The primary concern expressed by the closest in landowners is if any stray shots from the long-range shooting could impact ONEOK high-pressure lines nearby or traffic on K-96 at the 6th Avenue interchange because that interchange is a raised one. Vance said the risk of any shots escaping the range is minimal.

"I'm not going to say never, but we take a lot of care to make sure that doesn't happen," Vance said. "The people that will be shooting to the east there are not what I would classify as newer or rookie people. They are people that have a lot of experience and have been to a lot more training in order to be able to better handle a weapon, so it's not like, it's not like you're putting a brand new person out on the range and letting them shoot on that side."

The Planning Commission passed the CUP 4-0. Three members were out with illness.

Conditional Use approved for new Sheriff's shooting range

Due to illness among three members of the Reno County Planning Commission, the body chose to table a request from Mid States Materials to establish an aggregate storage yard just west of Nickerson.

The company spoke again about its revised plans for the property. The public hearing portion before the planning commission was held Thursday.

Many community members from the immediate neighborhood expressed their concerns about the additional truck traffic. They noted that it is used by young drivers to get to Nickerson High School and that some Reno Valley Middle School students also walk in the area.

"We'll come back on that third Thursday, October 21st and you will open up the meeting," said county planner Mark Vonachen. "There won't be any public comment. There won't be any presentation by the applicant, nor by staff, unless you have a regulatory question for me or for Mr. Brittain on that. It would just be strictly deliberation based off of the evidence that you had presentation to you tonight. There's no more public comment. There's no more public information submitted." 

There is also the issue of being sure there is not a negative impact on the levee owned by the City of Hutchinson near the property, though the applicant said they were in the process of getting an agreement in that regard.

Aggregate yard request tabled by Planning Commission Thursday

PRATT COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a police officer for alleged child abuse..

Just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday, KBI agents&nbsp; arrested 33-year-old Tate M. Rosenbaum at his residence in Pratt, Kansas, according to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

 He was arrested on requested charges abuse of a child, and one count of battery. The charges are connected to an incident that occurred on July 22.

After his arrest, Rosenbaum was booked into the Pratt County Jail.

The KBI initiated this investigation on July 23, after the Pratt Police Department requested KBI assistance. The Pratt County Attorney is expected to prosecute the case.&nbsp;
