The Cancer Council of Reno County invites residents to an evening of recognizing and remembering those who have fought or are fighting cancer. Starlight will take place Sunday, October 10th at Avenue A Park in Downtown Hutchinson at 6:30 p.m.

Attendees can decorate a memorial boat and honor loved ones by candlelight as the boats sail through the water. Boats are complimentary, The public is encouraged to bring their own supplies to decorate, along with lawn chairs and blankets. Masks are encouraged until you find your place to sit and watch.

Call the CCRC Office at 620-665-5555 to get a lantern kit early and decorate at home. Then bring it that night with the list of names you are honoring and staff will slip the lantern on the boat and read the names of those being honored and remembered.

Local music group, The Typsy Gypsies (Morgan Wilk, Cassie McDonald, Dayton Hodson &amp; Tom Faulkner), will be providing music for the evening. The Pointe School of Dance, Glenda Boor and students, will be performing throughout the evening also. Boats will sail about 8:00 p.m.

“We are so excited for Starlight Remembrance,” said CCRC Executive Director Sandy Woodson. “It’s a beautiful way to remember those who are fighting cancer, have fought cancer, or remember those who have lost their fight to cancer. I hope you’ll join us to watch the lantern boats sail down Cow Creek Sunday evening, October 10th.”

The Reno County Museum is hosting an outdoor spook walk on October 21, 2021, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Ghosts from Reno County’s past, played by volunteers, will “haunt” the Museum grounds ready to share their spooky tales and point guests in the right direction to reach the treats at the end! Guests should be aware, they may have a few tricks too! 

This year the Spook Walk will be outdoors and will be even bigger than ever in celebration of Hutchinson and Reno County’s 150th anniversary. During the Spook Walk this year the museum will be raising funds to ensure that local history is preserved for another 150 years.

The “Boo”seum Spook Walk is a longstanding tradition at the Reno County Museum. This year they are adding a costume contest, pumpkin decorating, giveaways, and more! &nbsp;

Hand sanitizing stations will be available, and candy will not be handed out in the traditional trick-or-treat fashion. However, pre-made sealed treat bags will be given once guests reach the end of the Spook Walk.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The calendar has turned to fall, and the weather is slowly following suit. Harvest is underway with combines rolling through fields and semis hauling grain to elevators and on-farm bins. There’s more of those bins and semis now than ever before because there’s more grain.

Over time, small changes can make an extraordinary impact. Of all the crops being cut this season, corn is perhaps the best example of how slow, steady progress has created grain harvests our ancestors could have never fathomed.

From the 1860s to the late 1930s, corn yields were essentially flat at 26 bushels per acre. The USDA’s latest estimate for the 2021 crop is projecting a nationwide average of about 175 bushels per acre. Over the span of about 80 years, farmers have increased their production nearly seven-fold. Yields for other grains have shot up too, but corn takes the crown in overall productivity.

This proliferation didn’t happen overnight, rather it began quite slowly, with yields inching up about 0.8 bushels per acre per year from the late ’30s to 1955 with the use of double-cross pollinated varieties. Continued improvements in genetic selection, the use of nitrogen fertilizer, mechanization, better management and more effective pesticides have pushed yields up by about 2 bushels per acre per year over the last 65-plus years.

While farmers have incorporated all of these advances into their operations, it’s the result of a truly collective effort. Public and private research across a range of industries has contributed to the incremental but reliable yield increase.

While the actual yields still vary depending on weather, recent years have seen the national average stay within 10 bushels of the 176.6 bushel-per-acre record set in 2017. We’re just one good growing season away from setting a new national record.

Harvest can top 300 bushels per acre in some areas across the country, but it requires some help from Mother Nature. Statewide, Kansas’ average is usually somewhere in the mid-130 bushel range because dryland acres dominate the landscape. Irrigated fields and those dryland parcels blessed with timely, adequate moisture often top 200 bushels per acre.

That’s nearly six tons of grain per acre, an enormous increase from the inch-long cobs grown about 10,000 years ago in central Mexico where corn was first domesticated. The Columbian exchange delivered corn to the rest of the world.

Now it grows across the globe, and its uses are just as versatile. Cattle convert corn to steak. Manufacturers transform the starch into plastics, fabrics, adhesives and more. It’s also a feedstock for the ethanol in your gas tank. Of course, it’s pounded into flour for things like cornbread and tortillas. Corn sugars sweeten drinks. My favorite though is corn that’s been fermented, distilled and poured over ice.

Farmers have gotten so good at growing corn, wheat, soybeans, sorghum and many other staples we no longer see gradual improvements as something that’s especially newsworthy. This is partly because farmers make a very difficult job appear easy.

While the rest of us enjoy all the bounty fall offers, from cool nights and tailgates to changing colors and bonfires, I hope the bounties in farmers’ fields are just as rich this autumn.

Insight: The Bounty of Fall

On September 20, the last Hutchinson crew and equipment was demobilized from the Dixie Fire and headed home. The crew and equipment safely arrived home on Friday morning, September 24. 

The initial crew left Hutchinson on July 15 and was assigned to the Tumbledown Fire in Idaho where they stayed until August 24. Crews were then assigned to the Dixie Fire in northern California. 

Twelve Hutchinson Fire Fighters along with 1 Kansas Forest Employee worked the 72 days.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will officially adopt the resolution putting a moratorium on wind development in the county as part of its meeting on Tuesday. 

Commissioners expressed their intent to hold off on the issue at their meeting September 14th, but the official language was not worked out yet.

Also on the agenda, Karla Nichols, Director of Public Health and Seth Dewey, Substance Misuse Health Educator for the Reno County Health Department will be present for the signing of a proclamation for September as National Recovery month.

Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton will provide his annual update to the Commission.

HR Director Helen Foster will also bring the idea of making the floating holiday for county employees that has been on Christmas Eve in recent years set permanently to that date for 2022 and beyond.

The commission will also receive the regular report from County Administrator Randy Partington and provide their own comments.

The Board of County Commissioners will meet in the Reno County Annex Conference Room Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas notes that life being far from normal has made people consider the possibility that their travel plans may not always happen when and how they originally thought.

"We did a survey in the past month and found that more than half of American adults, 55%, said that they are planning to take a vacation of at least one overnight stay before the end of next year," Steward said.

Thirty-one percent said they are more likely to purchase travel insurance for those trips because of COVID-19.

"Recent AAA Travel bookings have increased 11% over 2019 levels," Steward said. "That interest in travel insurance has increased in turn. Our travel insurance sales have increased more than double digits year over year."

Particularly if you plan to travel abroad, look into the idea of travel insurance.

"It's important to take a look at that," Steward said. "Take into consideration what types of travel insurance there are, what exactly would be covered and if COVID related issues are covered in the specific policy."

Some international destinations may require visitors to carry travel insurance, to help cover any unexpected medical costs that may be incurred while visiting.

AAA: Travel insurance an important consideration in light of COVID-19

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

The war was over and 102 Reno County men lost their lives, but the soldiers had returned home and many new additions to the city and county were a part of the 1920s. There was also loss and two major weather events.

1920: The first paved road connected Hutchinson and Nickerson. It was a big event with more than 15,000 residents showing up for the road’s dedication. More than 40 quarters of barbecue beef were served.

St. Elizabeth's Hospital was dedicated and served the area for many years until what is now Hutchinson Regional Medical Center was constructed.

&nbsp;Another bank comes to Hutchinson as Salt City Savings and Loan is incorporated. Emerson Carey is the president. That same year, Carey donates 200 acres of land near the Arkansas River for a new public park. The park is named in his honor.

The Grandview School is planned and Roosevelt School at 16th and Adams is constructed.

A parcel of land at 16th and Main is purchased for the Trinity Methodist Church.

1921: Scandal hits the Reno County Courthouse with bribery and price-fixing charges brought in connection with a road paving project in Medora. A grand jury indicts a local businessman and two county commissioners resigned. Armed guards are posted at the courthouse after records disappear. The county engineer flees to California.

Plans are put in place for a new Masonic temple in the city.

The third state convention of the American Legion is held in Hutchinson.

Hutchinson residents complain they pay more for gasoline than in other communities.

Hutchinson hosts the State Sunday School convention. Thousands attend at the convention hall and march down Main Street.

The Boy Scouts Council is organized in Hutchinson.

1922: Carey Park was officially dedicated on May 21, 1922. The municipal band plays for the crowd and many residents bring a picnic lunch and have dinner in the park. The only stipulation from Emerson Carey in donating the 200 acres for the park is that the city levy $5,000 a year for the park's upkeep. Much of the brass and copper used for lamps and vases used in the park made from moonshine stills were confiscated by authorities.

Another familiar name becomes a part of Hutchinson after J.D. Hall resigns as the Hutchinson Schools superintendent. He’s replaced by Winfield resident J.W. Gowans.

Nettie Keys is named Vice President of the Business and Professional Women's Club.

The Salvation Army gives out 481 Thanksgiving dinners to area residents — a tradition that still goes on today.

Prisoner James Porter, who was at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital with a gunshot wound, escapes.

The gas company threatens to cut off service to customers for not being able to pay the service charge.

Hutchinson's economy is boosted by tens of thousands of visitors to many conventions. Most stay at the campgrounds at the state fairgrounds.

The music supervisor at Hutchinson High School bans provocative jazz music.

A Reno County farmer is robbed of thousands of dollars in bootlegged whiskey. To add insult to injury, the sheriff’s department confiscates what isn’t stolen.

Thirty-five reformatory inmates are paroled so they can help with a bumper harvest.

1923: President Warren G. Harding visits Hutchinson and helps a local farmer with the wheat harvest. He also speaks to thousands at the state fair and plays golf with another familiar name, Sen. Arthur Clapper.

A tornado rips through the small community of Partridge; it never completely recovers from the storm.

The Carey Salt Mine is dedicated by Gov. Johnathan Davis.

A smallpox outbreak closes school for four weeks. The reformatory is put in quarantine to slow the spread in prison.

The county treasurer resigns for negligence with the county funds at a failed bank. The bank president flees the area but is arrested and convicted.

A new home is finished for the Hutchinson News at 2nd and Walnut.

1924: The Haven bridge over the Arkansas River is finished.

The Hutchinson News purchases the Daily Gazette; it becomes the morning edition called the Hutchinson Herald.

The Reno County Courthouse at B and Main is condemned after the ground caves in around it due to an old salt well. The county offices are relocated until a new courthouse can be built in 1931 at 1st and Adams.&nbsp;

A memorial for President Warren G. Harding is built on Rayl's Hill west of the city. School students help raise money for the project.

Reformatory employees are asked to donate a part of their paycheck to the Democratic state party. One employee who refuses is fired after a call from the governor.

Oil fever hits the area with new wells in Medora, Nickerson and Haven. There are talks of a refinery surface; it never happens.&nbsp;

Two thousand county residents register for the draft and are assigned to reserve units.

1925: Vida Watson of Turon is named the Kansas Wheat Queen and visits President Coolidge in the White House.

Grace Hospital is dedicated at 8th and Main.

Reno County ranks first in the state in the value of farm products as agriculture continues to be big business in the area.

The Santa Fe Railroad builds a new roundhouse in Hutchinson. Today it is the main railyard east of the city.

The First Baptist Church is destroyed by a fire. With plenty of help, the church rebuilds near 8th and Main.

The Women’s Civic Club opens on North Main in the city.

Another familiar business opens. Woodwork Manufacturing opens at Walnut and Sherman by W.E. Kissic, B.F. Nichols, H.A. Nichols and H.I. Sneed.

C.H. Humphreys is named the President of the State Chamber of Commerce.

J.D. Dillon retires from J.S. Dillon &amp; Sons. Ray Dillon becomes the company’s new president.

An imprisoned banker becomes the focus of a statehouse scandal when the outgoing governor is charged with bribery in an effort to pardon the banker and others.

1926: Another company with a long tradition in Hutchinson opened in 1926. Betts Bakery was a fixture of the city for many years at 120 E. 3rd Ave.

After starting small, the new Trinity Methodist Church is finished at the corner of 17th and Main.

Krause Manufacturing was established in 1928 and still builds farm equipment in Hutchinson to this day.

Hutchinson was becoming the center of the grain industry as Grain Belt Company and Western Terminal built new grain elevators. The area elevators get much bigger in the coming years.

Hutchinson Foundry and Steel is established. George Randall is president, C.B. Scanland is vice president and J.P. O’Sullivan is treasurer.

The grandstand at the Kansas State Fair is constructed using mostly inmates from the reformatory. The facility has seating for 12,000 fans. Inmate laborers are still a major part of the fairgrounds maintenance and upkeep year-round.

Two major bond issues are approved by the city. The first is $75,000 for the new municipal airport and the second is $38,500 for a new swimming pool at Carey Park.

Richardson Auditorium is dedicated at Hutchinson High School.

1929: The other major weather event in Hutchinson during the 1920s happened July 13, 1929, when the Cow Creek levee failed, sending a rush of flood water through the city. Most of the downtown area was under three-to-four feet of water and many homes and businesses were damaged.

The Red Cross provided assistance to 144 families hurt by the flood. Damage totals $2.5 million, or about $40 million today.

The first traffic lights were installed in the city.

A fact that still is true today, Reno County leads the state of Kansas in paved roads with 84 miles.&nbsp;

An automobile tag facility is built at the reformatory.

South Hutchinson Grade School is closed after a diphtheria outbreak.

The stock market crash seems to have little impact on Hutchinson.

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital opens a new nursing home.

This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.The war was over and 102 Reno County men lost their lives, but the soldiers had returned home and many new additions to the city and county were a part of the 1920s. There was also loss and two major weather events.1920: The first paved road connected Hutchinson and Nickerson. It was a big event with more than 15,000 residents showing up for the road’s dedication. More than 40 quarters of barbecue beef were served.St. Elizabeth's Hospital was dedicated and served the area for many years until what is now Hutchinson Regional Medical Center was constructed.<figure>

That same year, Carey donates 200 acres of land near the Arkansas River for a new public park. The park is named in his honor.The Grandview School is planned and Roosevelt School at 16th and Adams is constructed.A parcel of land at 16th and Main is purchased for the Trinity Methodist Church.<figure>

 </figure>1921: Scandal hits the Reno County Courthouse with bribery and price-fixing charges brought in connection with a road paving project in Medora. A grand jury indicts a local businessman and two county commissioners resigned. Armed guards are posted at the courthouse after records disappear. The county engineer flees to California.Plans are put in place for a new Masonic temple in the city.The third state convention of the American Legion is held in Hutchinson.Hutchinson residents complain they pay more for gasoline than in other communities.Hutchinson hosts the State Sunday School convention. Thousands attend at the convention hall and march down Main Street.The Boy Scouts Council is organized in Hutchinson.1922: Carey Park was officially dedicated on May 21, 1922. The municipal band plays for the crowd and many residents bring a picnic lunch and have dinner in the park. The only stipulation from Emerson Carey in donating the 200 acres for the park is that the city levy $5,000 a year for the park's upkeep. Much of the brass and copper used for lamps and vases used in the park made from moonshine stills were confiscated by authorities.<figure>

Haven USD 312 Superintendent Clark Wedel told Hutch Post Friday that references made to hundreds of dollars in damage to restrooms at Haven Grade School alluded to in a Facebook post are thought to be because of the devious licks TikTok trend.

Obviously, we haven't really caught our perpetrators yet," Wedel said. "We do believe it's related to the TikTok challenges."

Wedel said the damage or additional cleaning needed to the school is minor.

"We haven't closed any restrooms," Wedel said. "We've been a little more mindful as to who is going to the restrooms and when and trying to be a little more organized in how we do that."

Wedel hasn't heard of any issues at the middle or high school level, but he wanted to praise principal Laurel Scott for her efforts.

"Give credit to our elementary principal who put that out," Wedel said. "She's just trying to involve the families in it, trying to get some parent support and be proactive and maybe they can help us from the home aspect."

No other Reno County schools have publicly expressed any difficulties related to the social media trend, which has caused damage and even some closed restrooms in larger districts in Kansas.

Buhler City Council meets Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will get an update on the continued negotiations with the union representing the district's teachers when it meets Monday.&nbsp;

After declaring an impasse, a mediator has been brought in to help move things along. The board will get the update in executive session.

Also Monday, the board will take action on a settlement with the KJUMP gas lawsuit and seek approval of a new agreement with WoodRiver Energy.

The board will also go over numerous agreements with local agencies for services and approve the purchase of two vans for the district. Monday’s meeting of the Hutchinson USD 308 School Board begins at 6 p.m. at the school district offices at 1520 N. Plum.

USD 308 Board meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair did see a drop in attendance from the last fair in 2019. According to GM Bryan Schulz, the attendance was about 281,000 for the 10-day run.

A full breakdown of attendance numbers was not yet available. Schulz was pleased with the numbers:

“We are very very pleased with the attendance of about 281,000,” Schulz said. “We know that the weather played an issue from the first weekend, the scare of COVID was also an issue.”

The fair's attendance got a big boost when the last Saturday of the event brought a large crowd.

“As we all know, on the final Saturday, the numbers were just enormous with people on the grounds,” Schulz said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Schulz says at one time Saturday the line to get into the fair stretched down 20th Avenue from the main gate at Poplar Street west to Main. A large price increase from the carnival, along with a busy Midway, meant for a record-breaking take for the carnival compared with the last fair in 2019.

More than 280,000 attended Kansas State Fair

HILLSBORO, Kan.—A pilot avoided injury after a rough landing just before noon Friday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the landing gear on a 1964 Beechcraft fixed wing, single engine aircraft piloted by 69-year-old Perry V. Proffitt, of Keller, Texas, failed.

The plane made a belly landing at the&nbsp;Hillsboro Municipal Airport.&nbsp;

Proffit was not injured.&nbsp; The NTSB will investigate.

Pilot avoids injury after belly landing at Kansas airport

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department announced Friday that it will begin offering free COVID-19 booster vaccinations starting Monday, Sept. 27, to select populations.&nbsp;

The FDA granted emergency use authorization of the Pfizer vaccine to be used as a booster dose. The Advisory Committee for Immunization Practice and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention further limited the approved population, specifying persons age 65+ and residents in long-term care settings, along with those aged 50 to 64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot at least six months after their Pfizer primary series second dose.&nbsp;

Persons aged 18 to 49 with underlying medical conditions and ages 18 to 64 who are at increased risk for exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster of Pfizer at least six months after their primary series was completed, based on their individual benefits and risks.&nbsp;

The vaccine will be administered to those who received their primary doses of Pfizer at least six months prior. The health department will inform the public regarding Moderna and J&amp;J vaccines once more information is received about booster vaccines.

Appointments may be scheduled by calling 620-694-2900 ext. 6, or walk-ins will be accepted during normal operating hours. The health department is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m., and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m. Flu vaccines can also be administered at the same time as the COVID booster.&nbsp;

The health department is also administering first and second doses of the vaccine to any Reno County resident aged 12 and over, regardless of citizen status or insurance. For a ride to one of the vaccine sites, call RCAT at 620-694-2913.

Booster shots available to select individuals

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson fire crews were called out to the scene of a structure fire Friday morning.&nbsp;

HFD responded to 922 E. 5th Ave. around 9 a.m. and arrived to find fire coming from the rear side of the home. The fire was contained to an attached porch and was quickly extinguished.&nbsp;

The occupants of the home called 911 and got out safely. The Red Cross was brought in to assist the residents of the home. The fire remains under investigation but does appear to have started on the exterior of the home. No injuries were reported.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced Friday that, starting on Monday, Sept. 27, a portion of East 30th Avenue will be closed for street repairs. Detours will be set up along Syler Drive on the east and west side of the work.&nbsp;

The proposal would ask banks to keep track of all transactions of $600 or more. Individual information is not a part of the current proposal."Is this the start of a slippery slope?" Austin said. "They're only taking an inch and not taking a mile, but once we become accustomed to it, it will be a lot easier to take it to the next step."Bankers see this as very detrimental to their business."It's effectively making the banks a de facto arm of the state," Austin said. "That should be a huge red flag to any red-blooded American. What's really dangerous, of course, is by setting this precedent, it makes it easier for the IRS to go after those who just don't understand how complicated our tax system is and simply make a mistake."Austin is one of several candidates expected to run as Republicans for the State Treasurer's seat currently occupied by Democrat Lynn Rogers.
