HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The United Way is working hard to reach its goal in the final weeks of its yearly campaign. The Reno County chapter funds 24 different agencies around the area. Director Lisa Gleason says they are getting close to the end, but still have some work to do.

“We’ve had a really great campaign, we will officially end our campaign on January 31st,'' Gleason said. “We just need a little extra help.”

Gleason says they are about $80,000 short of the $1.1 million needed this year. The United Way shifted gears a few years back to be more streamlined and more focused on certain areas of need in the county and community. Gleason says that has paid off.

“Our goal is to be more strategic and to create long-term change,” Gleason said. “And so as we look at where funding goes, we look to see that the agencies and the places where the donations go are truly going to improve and change lives long-term.”

With the pandemic and other factors weighing heavily on various agencies this year, Gleason says it is important to reach this year's funding goal.

“We need to make sure that we are able to take care of them this year,” Gleason said. “We have promised them that we are going to fundraise and meet our goal.”

United Way making final push to reach campaign goal

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mennonite Friendship Communities announced Thursday that it has been selected to receive a $10,000 grant through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vaccine Equity and Access Program to increase COVID-19 and influenza vaccine access among older adults.

The grant was offered as part of a national partnership between LeadingAge, a national association of nonprofit aging services providers, and CDC partner Community Catalyst to strengthen vaccine education through community outreach and community-provider coalitions. Mennonite Friendship Communities will use the grant to reward staff for their vaccination efforts and to help educate the community on the value of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

Mennonite Friendship Communities is one of 42 LeadingAge members that have received a grant via an application process earlier this year. Clinics will be held throughout the first quarter of 2022.

MFC receives grant for vaccination program

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Schools announced Thursday that two USD 308 educators are being recognized by KSDE as winners for the 2022 Kansas Horizon Award.&nbsp;

Jazzmyn Tolbert, a third-grade teacher at Graber Elementary, and Lindsey Kepka, a high school alternative teacher, are among the 32 Horizon Award winners for 2022. Both teachers were surprised on the morning of Jan. 6 with a phone call from Dr. Randy Watson, Kansas Commissioner of Education, notifying them of the honor.

This prestigious award is given annually by the Kansas Department of Education and recognizes exemplary second-year teachers who perform with excellence in an elementary and secondary classroom.

“USD 308 is so proud to have two Horizon Award winners within our district," Superintendent Mike Folks said. "These teachers exemplify what it means to be a Salthawk and we are so excited to celebrate this honor with them."

As Horizon Award winners, Tolbert and Kepka will be inducted into the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN). This network is comprised of Horizon Award winners, Kansas Teachers of the Year, Milken Award winners, and Kansas Math &amp; Science Award winners.

Tolbert, Kepka named Horizon Award winners in USD 308

McPHERSON –&nbsp; A Kentucky man was ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to a McPherson County victim for securities fraud, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Bryan Scott Hurt, 52, of Glasgow, Ky., was sentenced Thursday in McPherson County District Court for one count of securities fraud. In addition to the restitution, McPherson County District Judge John Klenda sentenced Hurt to three years of probation and ordered him to pay a $5,000 fine. Hurt pleaded guilty to the charge on July 9, 2021.

An investigation by the Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner determined that Hurt’s company solicited a $25,000 investment in an oil and gas lease between December 2014 and January 2015 from a McPherson County resident. Investigators determined that Hurt diverted the investment for personal use and to pay other, unrelated investors.

Man ordered to pay $25K for oil, gas lease fraud in McPherson Co.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson water crews had to brave the cold weather Thursday to repair a ruptured water main. The water line break was reported near 5th and Hoagland at the time Hutchinson Fire was battle a structure fire in the area. The break was on a 6-inch water line that was installed in 1951 and left 32 customers without service. 

Public Works Water Maintenance staff worked in extreme cold (-6° wind chill) and restored water to all customers by 3:00 p.m..

The Public Works Street Division assisted by adding salt to the road to help prevent any ice buildup caused by the main break.

One lane of East 5th Ave, west of Hoagland is still closed until a contractor makes repairs to the street. That is expected to be around January 24th.

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Nickerson. The advisory is not related to Covid-19. The advisory was issued after because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County District Court Judge Patty Macke Dick was recently awarded the Pillars of Community Award during the Kansas Bar Association's annual meeting.

This Pillars of Community Award is given to a Kansas lawyer, judge, and Kansas Bar Association member with a minimum of 10 years of active non-specialized, general legal practice in a predominately low-density population area of Kansas. Recipients have substantial practice in small or solo law firms or local government service.&nbsp;

“I am honored to be recognized by the Kansas Bar Association for my commitment to my community and the state of Kansas,” Macke Dick said. “I appreciate the efforts of all Kansas lawyers in making our state a great place to live and practice.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Macke Dick was first elected district court judge in 1988 and has served as chief judge of the 27th Judicial District, composed of Reno County, since 2007.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Macke Dick is the past president of the Kansas District Judges Association. She currently serves on the Kansas Council of Chief Judges, Kansas Judicial Council, the District Court Management Personnel Advisory Committee, and the Juvenile Offender/Child in Need of Care Advisory Committee, as well as the planning team for the 2022 Kansas Mental Health Summit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Macke Dick honored by Kansas Bar Association

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County has been working hard to find mentors for youth in the area, but right now the waiting list is about 50 children. The organization is working to fill the open slots. Joe Young with Big Brothers Big Sisters says there are two ways to be a Big in the organization.

“We have what is called a community-based match. That is where you would meet with you little and you would go out and do activities,” Young said. “We also have what is called the site-based match. We have some Bigs that will go into the schools and meet with kids.”

If a child might benefit from Big Brothers Big Sisters, you can get the matching process going right away.

“Anybody that has a Little that would like to be involved in the program, you just have to contact us,” Young said. “We get a little bit of information about the family and then we'll come in and do an interview with the family.”

One area that has been a benefit to the agency is the Bigs in Blue program, which involves local law enforcement.

“We have a couple of officers that are involved in the program,” Young said. “Some of those officers, they have Littles that they meet with, some of them do site-based programs and some of them do community-based programs.”

If you are considering being a Big, there are a few steps that need to be taken to volunteer your time:

“We do an interview with them (potential Big) and get to know them a little bit. We also do background checks on everyone,” Young said. “Then we’ll have them come into the office and get to know them and then look at Littles. That process really doesn’t take that long.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters looking to address waiting list

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission will go over two planning department matters in regard to wind farms when it meets on Tuesday. Both matters were recently tabled by the board but are back on the agenda.

&nbsp;The county commissioners directed staff and the planning commission to consider amending the Comprehensive Plan to provide language that may permit the ability to prohibit the development of wind farms in the current zoned area of the county. Directives were also given to consider amending the Zoning Regulations to prohibit wind farms in zoned areas of the county. The commission also wanted a set of regulations for wind farms in the unzoned areas of the county.&nbsp;

That new zoning district would only regulate the building of wind farms by requiring a conditional use permit. All of the requirements of the zoning and subdivision regulations will not apply to the newly-created zoning district.&nbsp;

Both matters were approved by the planning commission following a recent public hearing. Tuesday’s Reno County Commission meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

Commission to discuss tabled wind farm zoning issues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Crews responded to 1428 E. 5th around 10:18 a.m. for a residential fire.&nbsp;

First-arriving units reported smoke showing from the backside of a small 1 ½-story residence. Crews found an exterior fire. Fire crews located two residents inside and assisted with self-evacuation.

The residence suffered moderate damage to the rear of the structure, minor damage was found on the interior of the home. The occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Investigation found improper discard of smoking materials was the cause of the fire.

Crews had to battle the extremely cold conditions and a water main break along East 5th, closing off that portion of the street.

HFD responds to house fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Like most hospitals, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is fighting staffing issues along with the pandemic. Fortunately, the area has the Allied Health Center at Hutchinson Community College, something the hospital is keeping close contact with.&nbsp;

“We have such an invaluable resource in Hutchinson Community College,” Chuck Welch of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare Systems said. “They have well known allied health and nursing programs. Many of our nurses today have gone through the program.”&nbsp;

And the hospital is going to work to strengthen that relationship in hopes to keep an open pipeline of medical staff coming in.

“We’re talking about lots of different operations and possibilities as far as building out classroom space and creating scholarships,” Welch said. “So if there’s kids out there that are even thinking about entertaining a profession in healthcare, right now is the time to start thinking about it.”

Welch says that nursing positions have now gone beyond being important to the hospital and the rest of the medical profession.

“Allied health nursing positions have always been important,” Welch said. “I think for the first time in my life they’re imperative.”

Welch says that it’s a priority to get nursing students into and through the program and get them on staff in the coming years.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department&nbsp;is now&nbsp;offering Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine boosters for ages 12-15, to be administered five months after completing a Pfizer primary series. This comes after KDHE announced it would adopt the CDC and FDA expanded eligibility recommendations&nbsp;for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine booster.&nbsp;Boosters can also&nbsp;be administered five months after completing a two-dose vaccine series of Pfizer (previously six months).

The booster&nbsp;recommendations have not changed for Moderna (six months after initial series completion) or Johnson &amp; Johnson (two months after dose) vaccines.&nbsp;However, immunocompromised youth aged 5-11 can now receive an additional primary dose of Pfizer to be&nbsp;administered 28 days after their second&nbsp;dose.&nbsp;

Active COVID-19 cases in Reno County continue to climb and are at 463 as of Thursday, Jan. 6. There is now one confirmed case of the Omicron variant in Reno County. Vaccines are still the best tool we have to protect against COVID-19, slow transmission and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging.&nbsp;

Health department gives vaccination update

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Wiley Elementary will be hosting the grand opening ribbon cutting of a student-led snack shop on Monday, Jan. 10, at 10:30 a.m.

Inspired by the Sweet Treat shop based out of Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, Wiley Elementary School will be debuting its own Mini Sweet Treat. The snack shop is sponsored by Heartland Credit Union and will be run by leadership students at the school.

The Mini Sweet Treat is a product of Wiley’s redesign initiatives in the area of leadership. To get the shop up and running, students wrote a business plan, learned about the process of securing a loan through Heartland Credit Union and practiced counting money. They also designed a cart and found foods that met special nutritional guidelines. Another leadership group – the Wiley Design Interns – created fliers, logos and utilized social media to advertise the opening.

“Our kids are so excited for this to open and for it to be ‘theirs.’ I’m incredibly proud of what they accomplished. I feel that kids always will amaze you if you just simply let them,” Kristi Link, teacher at Wiley, said.

Wiley Elementary opens treat shop

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. —A Reno County man was injured in an accident just before 8:00 a.m. Thursday in South Hutchinson.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by 19-year-old Alexander Yott was entering U.S. 50 from Scott Boulevard and traveling too fast for conditions.

The driver&nbsp; lost control of the vehicle which left the roadway to the right and over turned.

EMS transported&nbsp;Yott to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Closings and delays

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of active COVID cases has now jumped by more than 220 since Monday.

According to the latest numbers released by the health department, the total number of active cases stands at 463. The overall number of cases has increased by 470 in the past three days.&nbsp;

Chuck Welch of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System says the patients they are seeing are mostly displaying the Delta variant.

“I will tell you that unfortunately what we are seeing right now is still the Delta variant,” Welch said. “We haven’t even begun to feel the Omicron yet.”&nbsp;

Welch says Hutchinson always lags behind the larger health centers and that Omicron is making its way through the state quickly.&nbsp;

“Luckily what we’re hearing is that it’s less severe from a disease etiology standpoint, but it is far more contagious,” Welch said.&nbsp;

The hospital has 19 COVID patients at this time with several on support of some type. Welch says the hospital is starting to get stretched thin with low staff and about 75 beds filled overall.&nbsp;

Vaccination numbers are going up slowly with 52.7% of Reno County Residents vaccinated, a total of 32,944 residents.

COVID numbers jump by more than 400 in Reno Co. since Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County will be losing two school superintendents at the end of the year. Haven USD 312 Superintendent Clark Wedel and Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Mike Folks both announced their retirements. It's a trend that is moving through the entire state:

“We’ve got just under 30 school districts that we are working with at the moment to fill vacancies in superintendent positions,” Austin Harris with the Kansas Association of School Boards said. “That is higher at this point in the year that we normally see.”&nbsp;

Harris says, while there is some differences in being a superintendent in a large school like Hutchinson compared with a small school like Haven, it really comes down to what kind of school district you want to lead.

“It can be a different type of candidate who is looking at those jobs,” Harris said. “Small schools and big schools each have their own unique set of challenges and their unique set of opportunities.”

Harris says the KASB is also seeing superintendents announce resignations or retirements much earlier in the year, which he says is a help to districts. The unfortunate thing about the situation in leadership in the state school system is that if one district hires a new superintendent often it means another district is losing theirs.

“Superintendent openings tend to have a lagging effect. When you fill one position that’s often a superintendent from another school,” Harris said. “Throughout the next couple of months we’ll continue to see superintendent jobs open as the market shifts and people take new opportunities across the state.”

Harris says that most superintendents who are leaving are doing so because they have reached retirement age. Harris says the KASB is ramping up leadership programs and other methods to try to cultivate the next group of superintendents for the state, especially in western Kansas.

KASB working to find next group of district leaders

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mark and Phoebe Davenport like to, as they put it, “bite off a lot” when it comes to making major renovations to older properties. The Kansas City couple who has been in the midst of renovating the Plaza Towers and preparing to do the same to the Hoke building in Hutchinson are now the owners of the Landmark Hotel at 5th and Main.

The couple is hoping to renovate the rundown property that has seen its share of neglect from its previous owner.

“I drove past the property about a year-and-a-half ago when we were planning to purchase the Plaza Towers,” Mark said. “I was astonished as to how beautiful the building was and had to drive back again and take a closer look.”

While there was some interest in the building, Mark says the decision to rescue the building came shortly after the recent wind storm.

“It was a situation that happened recently with some of the windows getting blown out in the wind storm, we felt the time had come to bring some new luster to the Landmark,” Mark said.&nbsp;

A combination of damage from everything from earthquakes to wind to broken water pipes has certainly put wear and tear on the building, but overall, the structure is sound.

“The interior is in really rough shape,” Phoebe said. “We had a structural engineer check it out with us yesterday (Tuesday) and the building is structurally sound . . . nothing that can’t be repaired.”

While the Davenports have sound plans for their other two projects in Hutchinson, the future Landmark is a bit of an unknown for the moment.

“On the first floor I think there would probably be a chance for commercial space,” Mark said. “And I think floors two through five, some kind of residential situation.”&nbsp;

The couple is working quickly to get all of the details of the purchase in order and start making plans for the building. The couple hopes to close on the building at the end of March, which would be followed by nine to 12 months of design and planning for the building. The couple will also be looking at different funding sources for the project. With the Davenports already preparing for the renovation of the Hoke building into a hotel, they are eager to take on the Landmark.

“We think we can pull this one off too,” Phoebe said. “Our hope is that by the time the Hoke project is winding down and getting ready to open up as a hotel, our crew will be ready to move on to the Landmark.”

Landmark looked to be on the way to some type of action by the city after years of neglect. Developer Manske and Associates, who were responsible for renovating the Wiley Building, had shown interest in the Landmark back in 2012, but the needed $4.5 million in tax credits to help fund the renovation was denied by the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation and the proposal was withdrawn.

Davenports see potential in Landmark

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo and the Hutchinson Zoo announced Wednesday that they will be starting a new project.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the Hutchinson City Council unanimously approved a plan to develop a bison viewing area at the zoo. The project is funded by the generous donation of the Power Family and through fundraising by the Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Zoo is home to a herd of American buffalo, also known as bison. In September 2021, Dan and Shirley Power donated their hand-raised 15-year-old male bison, Norman, to the zoo collection. Dan and Shirley have been longtime supporters and friends of the Hutchinson Zoo. After conversations with zoo leadership about creating a bison viewing and feeding experience for guests, Power committed to donating funding to cover the area’s construction. Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo will raise the remaining $80,000 over the next two years to complete this project. The zoo’s bison herd resides in a wooded pasture on the southeast end of the zoo. Guest viewing is currently at a distance — across the lagoon or outside the zoo’s perimeter fence on Blanchard Street. The change will bring the animals closer to the public.

The bison viewing will continue the renovation of the south end of the zoo, adjacent to the new otter exhibit that opened in October of 2020. This project will allow zoo guests to see bison up-close and provide viewing of the adjacent pronghorn and white-tailed deer. The creation of this area will lay the groundwork for the zoo’s next master plan expansion that will be a prairie exhibit.

New bison exhibit coming to zoo

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department announced Wednesday that it will be conducting wildfire control operations north and east of Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The areas north of Hutchinson will include Plum Street from 69th to 108th avenues, 82nd Avenue from Plum Street to Monroe Street. The area east of Hutchinson will include 69th Avenue along the Sandhills State Park, Inverness from Spyglass to 30th Avenue, 30th Avenue from Cedar Ridge to Kent Road, East 4th Avenue west of Willison Road, and Willison Road from 4th Avenue to 17th Avenue.

A coordinated burn will clear out the county/city right-of -ay from the road to the fence lines. Several units will be operating in the area, including Hutchinson fire units, Reno County sheriff’s deputies, Reno County Emergency Management, Reno County and Hutchinson Public Works, and Kansas Forest Service.&nbsp;

Motorists are asked to use extreme caution in these areas while fire crews are working. Officers may shut down the road during certain times for the safety of vehicles and workers; 30th Avenue will be opened up no later than 3 p.m. to accommodate school traffic.

A burn plan has been developed and ample resources will be available to keep the fire operations under control. Burning will begin Jan. 12 and end by middle-to-late February. The burn will operate under county burning regulations and is dependent on weather conditions. A late-morning to early-afternoon start time is expected with no burning occurring after dark.

NORWICH, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of Norwich in Kingman County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to a water line break that occurred Jan. 3.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the city of Norwich indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination have been resolved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Boil water advisory lifted for Norwich

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven City Council approved a new program that it feels will help with the operations of the city recreation programs.

The council approved the purchase of RecDesk. The city will use the system for activity/facility management. The&nbsp; system will assist with organizing, operating, and expanding Haven Recreation. The annual subscription is $3,500.

During the meeting, City Clerk Leslie Atherton noted that the system has functions that could be used for other city operations as well, including the pool, community building, and for online form-filling. The council also approved a new payment system so any services provided from RecDesk can accommodate credit card payments.

One other recreation matter was also approved. The council gave the go-ahead to spend $1,025 for new baseball and softball equipment for the summer.

And the council did go into executive session to discuss legal matters regarding the swimming pool, but no action was taken. And finally, three license renewals for the three mobile home parks in the city were approved, as well as a cereal malt beverage license renewal for Kwik Shop.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The House of Capper renovation project at the Kansas State Fair has received another major donation. Skyland Co-Op, Inc. announced its approval of a $105,000 donation.&nbsp;

"The board of directors of Skyland Co-Op, Inc. are glad to help fund such a worthy project recognizing Arthur Capper and his immense contribution to our privileges as farmers to operate in a cooperative fashion. Like projects similar in the past, this project was unanimously supported by our board,"&nbsp; Wade Tucker, Board Chairman, said.

&nbsp;The Capper Project will create a tribute to the work of Arthur Capper in rebuilding the structure to its original state and to develop and build the Capper Cooperative Park to celebrate the Capper-Volstead Act of 1922, which allowed for the creation of cooperatives in the United States. The Capper Cooperative Park, a walk-through educational park, is being developed in the green space to the north of the House of Capper to tell the story of the work of cooperatives in the United States.

&nbsp;“The support by Skyland Grain at the Builder level with a commitment of $105,000 for the Capper Project is significant in building the partnership and support for this project by the Co-Op community all across Kansas. The Kansas State Fair is a showplace for new technology in agriculture and our cooperative partners are often the first to adapt to these changes in agriculture,” Mary McCurry, Chair, Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, said. “The Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation is working alongside the Kansas State Fair Board and our community partners like Skyland Grain to create a meaningful and beautiful fairgrounds with central points of interest that are crucial to developing them as a destination point for year-round activities.”

&nbsp;“We’re thankful for Skyland Grain and their investment in this project, which will help bring the House of Capper back to its original grandeur as a centerpiece for the fairgrounds for the 2022 Kansas State Fair,” Bryan Schulz, General Manager, Kansas State Fair, said.

&nbsp;The fair hopes to have the project completed in time for the 100-Year Anniversary of the Capper-Volstead Act of 1922 to take place during the 2022 Kansas State Fair.

Kan. —&nbsp; The length of the impact of COVID-19 on schools is something USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson superintendent Curtis Nightingale wants parents and community members to pay attention to.

For young kids, it's been years of masked and not masked and socially distanced and quarantines and all those things," Nightingale said. "They're in third grade and they have never known school not to be like that. If you'll think about our seniors, it's been eighth grade, freshman year, since the last time they had a normal school year. Our goal hopefully is we're trying to normalize it as much as possible to give them a great experience on their way out, because, I just hate to think of those seniors walking away and this is the taste they are going to have in their mouth."

COVID precautions are just one example of mandates that are handed down from levels above the local school.

"Quarantines, those are imposed by an outside entity that we have no control over," Nightingale said. "Then our legislators decide that we cannot offer remote learning to those kids without losing funding. That forces schools to try to figure out a way to not do remote learning for these students that are missing a week, two weeks at a time. We've got students that have already been quarantined three and four times this year."

Also, the annual testing is supposed to be normal this year.

"Those assessments are becoming higher and higher stakes, as it relates to what they are going to do with school funding next year, because that's all getting ready to change," Nightingale said. "We've got the federal dollars and the expectations that are set to those. We've got this entity out there that likes to publish school assessment scores as some sort of a grade in terms of how good or how bad a district is, not taking into account any of those other mandates."

Nightingale notes that not a minute to the day and not a day to the year has been added and yet expectations and results are expected to be at a much higher rate now than they were 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or even five years ago.
