HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a two-year delay due to COVID, Bike Across Kansas will be back for its annual summer ride. 

Two years ago, the tour was to stop in Hutchinson. Since the event then was canceled, the route will come to Hutchinson this year.&nbsp;

The ride will begin at the Colorado border west of Syracuse, with overnight stays in Garden City, Spearville, and St. John before making the stop in Hutchinson. From there the route will continue on to Hillsboro, Olpe, and Ottawa. It will conclude at the Missouri border near Louisburg.

Planning meetings have begun to decide how to welcome cyclists when they arrive, and the Hutchinson/ Reno County Chamber of Commerce says they will provide more information soon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BAK coming to Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of reported active COVID cases in Reno County continues to fall quickly.&nbsp;

As of Monday morning the number of active cases stood at 718 which is down from the 1,419 cases December 31.&nbsp;

The pace of the overall number of cases is slowing as well, as the case count has increased by 215 since the first of the month. The total number of cases is now 17,351. Unfortunately, the number of fatalities from COVID increased by five in the past week to 215.

The vaccination rate for the county now stands at 53.79% or 33,589 county residents.

Just before 11 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to 219 E. Avenue A for the report of a building fire. 

Following the initial investigation, smoke was found coming from the exterior wall by the electrical meter. Exterior siding was removed to expose the area and the fire was extinguished.   

The home was occupied at the time of the fire and all were able to escape without injury.

Hutch Fire deals with exterior wall blaze Sunday night

Kan. — The Hutchinson Chamber hosted its first legislative forum Saturday at Hutchinson Community College. Present were Reps. Michael Murphy, Paul Waggoner, Jason Probst and Joe Seiwert. 

The legislators touched on many topics from water to education to the Woodie Seat Bridge, but one that has come up for the legislature this past month is the so called APEX bill, which is in the legislature to give large incentives to get a company with 4,000 jobs to come somewhere in Kansas. 

The three Republicans on the panel all expressed skepticism that the deal would work out for the state, even if the incentives are offered and accepted.

"It's not always the golden bullet," Murphy said. "Like I said earlier, I think we need to make our state more attractive. I would rather have a hundred small companies come in and they would probably be scattered around the state, rather than one big one come in stuck in one place, that's me, personally."

Rep. Paul Waggoner noted that growth for one plant doesn't mean growth for everyone.

"There is not a correlation between strong economic growth in a state and throwing hundreds of millions and billions of dollars at profit-making companies just to incentivize them," Waggoner said. "It's much more important to have a good, balanced tax rate that is as minimized as possible and is as fairly distributed as possible, in that sense, I reject the premise of the question."

Rep. Joe Seiwert has seen large employers come and go and that's where his concern lies.

"You can be held hostage by these corporations," Seiwert said. "We all agree that some of these corporations are good, but some of them are not, and when you get a not corporation, you're held hostage. You bring in 4,000 employees in one town, you're going to do a lot of things in the future to keep them 4,000. Otherwise, you're going to have housing issues, you're going to have road issues, you're going to have empty buildings sitting around."

Rep. Jason Probst isn't pleased that incentives are deemed necessary, either.

"Economic development, is kind of, it's an ecosystem and you can't, as much as I don't like the corporate incentives that are part of this APEX bill, you have to acknowledge that is the game we're playing," Probst said. "We can't just simply remove ourselves from that and expect to be competitive. If every other state is playing that game, Kansas will lose every time, if we're not playing it. I don't like it and I'm not going to support it, but I acknowledge that's part of the landscape."

MARION COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Sunday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Honda Accord driven by Jennifer Ann&nbsp;Kirkpatrick, 47, Chapman, was southbound on&nbsp; Kansas 15 one half mile south of U.S.56.

The Honda struck a pedestrian identified as 24-year-old Yueyang&nbsp;Jiang, of Andover, was stationary in the road near a vehicle illegally parked in the roadway, according to the KHP. The Honda immediately pulled off to side of road.

EMS transported Jiang to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp;Kirkpatrick was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss sees the economy's growth slowing as he surveys leadership in the Midwest, but the Federal Reserve has already said it's going to hit the brakes via interest rate increases in 2022.

"The economy is slowing down, but inflation is not," Goss said. "They really need to raise interest rates, which slows the economy down even more. At least, it cools inflationary pressures. This is somewhat like what we saw in the 80s and the latter part of the 70s when we had oil prices increasing inflation, but slowing the economy, so we're right there again."

It hasn't caused a recession, but it is something that bears watching, because inflation is causing its own problems.

"It cuts into everybody's wages," Goss said. "Wages have been growing this year at a pretty good pace. Unfortunately, prices have been growing at an even faster pace. What that does, it reduces the value of the dollar. It makes it very hard for individuals and families and businesses to do any sort of planning."

The one area where a weaker dollar has helped is in agriculture.

Agricultural commodity prices are better, which are very important to Kansas," Goss said. "We're talking about wheat, soybeans, corn, beef and pork, not as much, but still very good agricultural commodity prices. What the weak dollar does, and we've seen a very weakened dollar by the Federal Reserve, that makes our goods more competitively priced abroad, so the Chinese and other nations out there want to buy our products, because they've become relatively cheaper."

The Mid-America Business Conditions Index showed slowing growth in the Midwest region in January.

Kan. — The Board of Reno County Commissioners plans to recognize a long time member of the county's planning commission at its meeting on Tuesday.

Lisa French served on the Planning Commission Board from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2021.

She served as Chairwoman in 2018 and 2019; and as Vice-Chairwoman in 2020 and 2021.

French is stepping off of the board as of the end of the year.

Also on the agenda for the Commission is the contract with the temporary fill in that needs to continue work until the hiring of the County Appraiser.

The Reno County Commission intends on appointing an Appraiser at their meeting on March 22, 2022. During the vacancy between the interim appraiser and the new County Appraiser appointed to the 4-year term, a contract is required. The contract will allow Melissa Crane to perform appraisal duties until that permanent hire is made.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The South Hutchinson City Council will vote on tax abatements for American Packaging at its meeting Monday night.

The tax abatement calls for a 100 percent abatement of property taxes associated with the $7 million plus expansion of their facilities over the next ten years.

Analysis indicates the long-term economic growth impacts will exceed this rebate.

Also on the agenda Monday is the permanent promotion of Ronnie Pederson to Public Works Superintendent. He's been doing the job on an interim basis since the departure of Rob Ginest.

In addition, the council is set to approve the temporary permit for a beer garden at Our Lady of Guadalupe church for its annual Fiesta in June.

The city council also is looking at modifying its ordinance regarding public intoxication so that police are allowed to address issues at public places that are not on public roadways, like Love's and McDonald's, should they arise.

Violation of the ordinance would be an unclassified misdemeanor and punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.00, a maximum of 10 days in jail or both.

The South Hutchinson City Council meeting is at 6:00 p.m. at the city office at 2 S. Main.

Pickup for the one-pound packages of sausage and one quart containers of sauerkraut is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, February 7 with curbside pickup only at the Harvey Street entrance to the St. Peter's fellowship hall.

The sausage is $5 per pound for less than ten pounds and $4 per pound for ten pounds or more, but you need to preorder, so they know how much to make.

First arriving crews found light smoke in the area.

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Sheriff's Office asked for traffic to detour for several hours Friday after what turned out to be a double fatal crash on K-14.

Two people died in an accident just after 4 p.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Mustang driven by 17-year-old Matthew H. Monroe of Nickerson was southbound on Kansas 14 three miles south of Nickerson. 

As traffic was slowing down, the Ford rear-ended a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant driven by 30-year-old Alexander K. Dennis of Junction City.&nbsp; The impact forced the Mitsubishi to enter into the northbound lanes.&nbsp;

A northbound 2006 Peterbilt semi driven by 60-year-old Clarence R. Messick of Saint John, struck the Mitsubishi.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Mitsubishi then struck the trailer of a 2009 Chevy Suburban driven by 52-year-old Jeffery W. Mehl of Hutchinson.

After impact, the semi continued north, jackknifed on the west shoulder and struck a 2022 Ram truck driven by 38-year-old Casey D. Gamble of&nbsp; Hutchinson.

EMS transported Dennis and Messick to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where Dennis was pronounced dead. A passenger in the Mitsubishi, 13-year-old Teagan Lomax of South Hutchinson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

 Monroe, Mehl, 5 passengers in the Chevy and Gamble were not injured. The occupants of the Mitsubishi were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Voters in Inman USD 448 will be voting on a $5 million bond issue later this spring.

In a letter sent to patrons Friday, the public was informed of a vote by the USD 448 board to put forward a question to improve the athletic facilities at Inman High School.

The question, which will be part of a special election May 3, 2022, will read as follows:

Shall Unified School District No. 448, McPherson County, Kansas (Inman), issue general obligation bonds	in an amount not to exceed $5,000,000, to pay the costs	to: (a)	construct, furnish and equip athletic improvements in the District, including facilities for football/track and field, baseball, softball, improve site drainage, improvements to address handicap access (Americans with Disabilities Act) and other	code compliance	challenges, and necessary demolition; and (b) make all other necessary improvements related thereto; all pursuant to the provisions of	K.S.A. 10-101 et seq.,	K.S.A. 25-2018(f), and K.S.A. 72-5457.

The $5 million bond will be paid over 15 years, with only the first three years of the bond resulting in a significant tax increase. After the other bond that is still on comes off in three years, taxes will drop back to a similar level to where they are currently. For those three years, the increase on a $150,000 home will be $57.08 a year. The increase on a 160-acre piece of irrigated land will be $74.81 a year. 

Those projections only figure in the current debt service and the addition that would be made through the new $5 million bond, if it passes. 

Residents in Inman USD 448 must be registered to vote by April 12 to vote in the bond election. If you are already registered, you do not need to do so again.

Through the power of storytelling Cousteau uses her amazing voyages around the world to offer a thoughtful perspective on the connection of the environment, indigenous peoples, &amp; populations around the world and how this knowledge is vital to the future of each of us on the planet.

As founder of CauseCentric Productions, Céline Cousteau is a documentary film director, producer, and presenter, creating cause-focused multimedia content. Extending her family legacy and her expertise, Céline co-founded The Céline Cousteau Film Fellowship, a nonprofit program whose mission is to empower young aspiring filmmakers, creatives, and activists to inspire change through filmmaking. Having worked on more than 20 documentaries worldwide, Céline offers a global perspective through an insider's intimate point of view.

Because of her versatility and background in art, she has collaborated with companies like Swarovski, London based fashion designer Deborah Milner, and New York jewelry designer Susan Foster to design jewelry based on the same messages of her environmental and humanitarian work. This was another opportunity to extend storytelling into another form in order to share the message of interconnectivity between humans and the natural world. Thanks to her position in the world of ocean conservation, Céline joined the World Economic Forum Council on Oceans for two terms. Currently, Céline is ambassador for the TreadRight Foundation, sits on the board of directors of the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the advisory boards of The Himalayan Consensus and Marine Construction Technologies. Kan. — Tish Petitjean is the Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month for January. Petitjean is a kindergarten teacher at Union Valley Elementary. She said the technology may have changed, but the kids are still the focus.

"Kids are amazing," Petitjean said. "I think the curriculum has changed, because we have preschool that is more readily available than we did when I started, so we have kids that are more prepared coming in. Of course, the pandemic has been a big shift, so we've gone to more technology. Some of that is amazing and some of that, it still needs to be taught by the teacher."

It's so important to stay focused on individualized instruction, according to Petitjean. It's also important for kids to learn in kindergarten how to get along with one another.

"Those soft skills, I think, have become more focused," Petitjean said. "We realize how important they are. We definitely want academics and we want the rigor, but we also want those soft skills, because they are life skills."

Petitjean has been in USD 313 long enough that she has community members now that she had as students.

"What I really enjoy the most these days about teaching is seeing those students grow up," Petitjean said. "Some of them, I could go to a doctor, or I could go to so many professions. The best thing is, I get to know those families. Back in the day, I did home visits and I got to know them. I still do a lot of communication with families, so I'm not only getting to know the student, but the family. It's just neat, because those former students, I'm having their children. Or, they'll call back if they live somewhere else and they may ask me a question about education or their child, or something and that is the most rewarding of all. That's why we're in teaching."

Petitjean notes that when she talks to those adult students, she asks them what they remember of kindergarten and that's what she continues to teach. She said a lot of the time, it's about the acts of kindness even above the academics that they still talk about. Petitjean was a 2006 state finalist for Kansas Teacher of the Year.

Kan. — The SHARE Haiti Benefit Auction and Waffle Supper is Friday at the Pleasantview Activity Center at 5013 South Dean Road. 

"We are a non-profit organization based in the southern part of the country," said Lysner Jean with SHARE Haiti. "We are involved in a lot of humanitarian aid. The goal is to bring the gospel of God to the Haitian people and eventually teach them the Bible. It is hard to get an attentive ear when the people are struggling, when they are hungry, when the children cannot go to school, when they do not have shelters. We try to implement some of those programs to help them out."

For Jean, he sees his role as giving back to those who invested in him when he was growing up.

I grew up in a family that would be considered poor compared to an American standard," Jean said. "I received a lot of help from people to make me what I am today. I feel the great way to return thanks is to help others. The people that helped me, they are really not expecting anything directly from me to help them back. I decided the great way that I can say thank you to those that helped me in the past is to help others that are in need.

That's why he has come to America to tell the story of SHARE Haiti and to let Christians know of the need, as he personally doesn't have the means to do it himself. 

This is the 14th year for the event. It begins with the supper at 4:30 p.m. and the auction starts at 6:30 p.m.

"I received a lot of help from people to make me what I am today. I feel the great way to return thanks is to help others. The people that helped me, they are really not expecting anything directly from me to help them back. I decided the great way that I can say thank you to those that helped me in the past is to help others that are in need.That's why he has come to America to tell the story of SHARE Haiti and to let Christians know of the need, as he personally doesn't have the means to do it himself. This is the 14th year for the event. It begins with the supper at 4:30 p.m. and the auction starts at 6:30 p.m.

"We have a brand new fundraising event," said Katie Broker with the Reno County Museum. "This is something that we've never done before and we're working really closely with a lot of local businesses in downtown Hutchinson to put on an appraisal fair in April."

This isn't the first time for this kind of thing, but it's the first time in a long time.

"Hutchinson did one of these in 2009," Broker said. "It was actually put on by the Antique Association. They are still assisting us with this. However, we are doing this with the museum to raise funds. It will be our first major fundraiser in several years. What is my item worth is a question we get asked a lot at the museum. Museums cannot appraise your items. We can't put a value to that for you. We're not supposed to. We can't, but there are many qualified individuals in businesses here in Hutchinson that would be happy to do that for you."

The event is at Memorial Hall on April 16th.

"You can make an appointment," Broker said. "You can come in, bring your items. You can find out an estimated value for how much they are worth in the Hutchinson market. When you come in, you pay $25 to get two items valued. All of the proceeds of this event then go back into the museum so that we can continue to preserve history through exhibits, programs and other events.

Reno County Museum holding appraisal fundraiser in April

The winter storm that dropped several inches of snow across Kansas and Oklahoma has forced the cancellation of several blood drives in the region this week. Together, those canceled drives have cost the Red Cross of Kansas and Oklahoma at least a day's worth of blood.

The national blood supply has been low enough that the American Red Cross declared its first-ever national blood crisis in January. Kansas and Oklahoma avoided winter weather last month that caused organizers and partners across the country to call off hundreds of blood drives, but COVID-related cancelations in the region led to more than 2,100 planned donations going uncollected.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Those&nbsp;who come to give blood in February will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, thanks to Amazon.&nbsp;(Terms apply. Visit&nbsp;<a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/local-homepage/events/amazon-gift-card.html" target="_blank">rcblood.org/together</a>.)&nbsp; &nbsp;

Hutchinson Recreation Commission announces the hiring of a new member to its leadership team.

Patches Meadows&nbsp;began her role as the Manager of Hutch Rec’s Senior Center at Elmdale Park on Jan. 10. Meadows comes to Hutch Rec after a 17-year career at Mennonite Friendship Communities. At Hutch Rec, Meadows will be responsible for assuring quality programs and services of the Senior Center at Elmdale Park. This includes the senior center’s lunch program, wellness programs, enrichment activities, and special events.

“I am looking forward to interacting daily with the members of Elmdale and providing a place for them to come every day to laugh, learn, exercise, share a meal together, and hang out,” Meadows says. “I absolutely love this age group of people – the stories they have, the history they know. I learn from them daily and go home with a full heart.”

Meadows is a lifelong Reno County resident, growing up in the Buhler area and graduating from Buhler High School and Hutchinson Community College. She now resides in South Hutchinson and is married with a blended family of five adult children and 10 grandchildren.

Meadows’s office is located at Hutch Rec’s Senior Center at Elmdale Park, 400 E. Ave. A. The senior center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

New Elmdale Senior Center Manager hired

The Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Imaging Services Department is a Lung Cancer Screening Center. It's important to note that those who need to be screened meet certain criteria. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended since March of 2021 that sdults aged 50 to 80 years who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years be screened for lung cancer. Jean Gettle, RN, the nurse navigator for the screening program, explains what constitutes a pack-year.

"A pack a day for 20 years would be a 20 pack-year," Gettle said. "A pack a day for 30 years would be a 30 pack-year." 

If a person started smoking when they were 18, quit when they were 38 and turned 50, they would fall under the latest guidelines.

"You want to get in and get as early a baseline done as possible," Gettle said. "It is done annually. After that, it's based on recommendation. Depending on what's seen, you could be doing a six-month follow up, a three-month follow up or an annual follow up."

The only recommended screening test for lung cancer is low-dose computed tomography (also called a low-dose CT scan).

"It takes about five minutes for the whole scan itself to complete," Gettle said. "Then, they will receive a letter within the next few days with their results and any follow-ups that need to be taken will either go through their doctor or we'll send them through the lung nodule clinic.

Lung cancer screening is recommended only for adults who are at high risk for developing the disease because of their smoking history and age, and who do not have a health problem that substantially limits their life expectancy or their ability or willingness to have lung surgery, if needed.

MANHATTAN — Farmers and ranchers from across Kansas gathered in Manhattan Jan. 28-30 for the annual Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&amp;R) leaders conference. More than 380 attended the three-day Kansas Farm Bureau conference designed to provide educational and networking opportunities for young producers in Kansas. The conference provided young ag producers between the ages of 18-35 with agricultural education, motivational speakers and opportunities to connect with industry resources and network with peers. Attendees heard from Tim Moffett, a Florida dairy farmer and comedian; Kyle and Tiffany Lechtenberg, owners of Northview Family Farms in north-central Nebraska; Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and Kansas Farm Bureau President Rich Felts. State committee members from each of the 10 Kansas Farm Bureau districts planned and hosted the conference, which included workshops, speakers, tours and competitions. The YF&amp;R state committee played an integral part in making this year’s conference a success. Winners of the conference competitions include the following:
