HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More than 100 Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC) employees lined the hallway leading out of the ICU, the unit’s doors opened and a hospital bed emerged. All were silent as a donor about to give life to others through organ donation was wheeled to a surgical room to begin the process.

The ritual is called an “Honor Walk.” Kristy Sourk, House Supervisor and ICU Nurse at HRMC, said the Honor Walk offers comfort to both hospital employees and family members. “It fulfills our need to recognize the gift being given to honor not only the donor, but the family left behind,” Sourk said. “There is no greater gift that can be given than organs to give life to others. We want families to know that their family members who chose organ donation are heroes.”

Ken Johnson, President and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS), said the need for organ donations is increasing as 113,000 people are waiting for organ transplants and nearly 7,000 Americans die each year while on a waiting list. “Hutchinson Regional Medical Center has been nationally recognized for its efforts to work closely with the Midwest Transplant Network to facilitate organ donations.,” Johnson said. “Everyone has the power to give life through organ donations, an option deserving of consideration.”

The Honor Walk is a ritual established at Life Center, an organ transplant center in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2017. The Honor Walk tradition has grown to include hospitals throughout the nation.

NEWTON, Kan. — Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged harassment involving deputies in Harvey County.

According to a social media report, the sheriff's office administration was made aware of alleged harassment claims against two Harvey County deputies. 

The sheriff's office began an internal investigation to gather more information. While the investigation is being conducted, the two deputies have been placed on administrative leave. 

The department said it takes these allegations with the utmost seriousness and will respond appropriately once the investigation is completed.

Harvey Co. deputies placed on leave during harassment investigation

Kan. — When you're working with the heart, confidence is as important as expertise, according to Dr. Michael Hagley, MD, interventional cardiologist with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System.

"If you're going to do these types of specialties, you have to have a certain sense that you do it well," Hagley said. "In other words, if you're a heart surgeon and you don't think you can do the procedure as well as anybody, then ethically, you probably shouldn't do it. It's the same thing in cardiology. If you don't think that you can do it as well as anybody, then you should refer to somebody who you think does it better."

With that said, the staff at Hutchinson Regional has both experience and expertise, with Dr. Hagley in his 20th year in Hutchinson and heart surgeon Dr. Robert Fleming working in the area since 1994.

"I just want people to know that other than transplant and neurosurgery, there isn't a lot we don't do here in Hutch," Fleming said. 

In fact, with that confidence, positive outcomes are what they expect, and that helps them be able to focus on the task at hand.

"I think most of us who do this are fairly matter-of-fact," Hagley said. "At least in my practice, if things go well, my response emotionally is, that's pretty much what I expected is for things to go well. You do lose a little bit of that wonder, unless you have the opportunity to maybe sit back and deliberately reflect on things. Then you realize that while you were worrying about the details, you actually took an amazing journey."

It's not that interventions with the heart don't have risk, but rather that experience has taught them both that proper application of their expertise and that of the cardiac rehab center at Hutchinson Regional can result in a great quality of life for patients, as long as they are allowed to intervene in time.

Cosmosphere announces new specialty camp

Carla Smith with Rise Up Reno Prevention Network said that even though vaping isn't as much in the news as it was in previous years, it's still an issue for kids.

"It did drop a little bit when the kids were not as socially interactive," Smith said. "It is back up again. We're seeing other substances. It's not just nicotine. We're seeing a lot of THC."

Part of the reason vaping is so popular is it is easy to conceal.

"Marijuana is coming in a lot of different forms," Smith said. "It's really easy to put in a vape. Adults can't smell it. It's not just adults, other people can't smell it. A lot of times, it's easy to hide, it's easy to use. It's hard to detect. It's there."

The best way to keep kids from starting substances, Smith has found is giving them other things to be involved with.

"Prevention involves helping kids build up skills, advocacy, to be able to stand up for themselves, so that they know ahead of time what they are going to say and what their morals or character are, how they feel about what they are willing or not willing to do," Smith said. "If their goals are to do well in sports or to be a great business person or just to have good grades in school, then they have a reason. When they have a reason to say no, they are more likely to stick with it."

Smith: Vaping still a problem

Sue Wegerle with the VITA Tax Site talked about some of the paperwork that those who received a portion of the Child Tax Credit in advance should bring when they have their return prepared.

"For families with children 17 and under, some people got an advance child tax credit starting in July," Wegerle said. "They got half of what they would have ordinarily gotten for that child from July through December. In order to get the other half, they need to file their tax return. For children 5 and under, that amount was $3600 per child and from 6 to 17, it was $3000 per child. Each person who got an advance child tax credit should get a form 6419 and you need to bring that to the tax preparer, because it's not the same for everyone. You would think that half of $3000 would be $1500, but it isn't always and we have to have that form."

Spouses should each have received a copy of the form, as well. Also, some adults may get money back they weren't planning for. 

"The earned income credit has expanded from age 19 to whatever," Wegerle said. "Before, it cut off at 65. A senior citizen who had a job, let's say you worked at the fair during September or helped out somewhere else, you were not eligible for that, so you may not have even had a filing requirement. If you had any wages at all, even if it was a little bit, you should come in to see if you're eligible for earned income credit."

To be eligible to have your taxes done at the VITA site, you must have less than $58,000 in income in 2021. You need to bring any applicable IRS forms, like W-2s or 1099s and if you received advance child tax credit payments, you'll need that letter, as well.  You also need proof of ID and Social Security cards for everyone on the return. The site will be regularly open Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

You can walk in and have your return prepared, or drop it off to have it prepared when time is available.

Central Christian School Kindergarten Exploration and First Grade Preview March 8

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners gave their approval Tuesday to increase the reimbursement rate that Reno County Correctional Facility gets from the Kansas Department of Corrections for housing parole violators.&nbsp;

Currently, the Kansas Department of Corrections reimburses Reno County $53 per day to hold parole violators. The rate has not changed since 2009. The sheriff’s department asked that the reimbursement be increased to $62 per day, per parole violator. The S.O. says the rate change is due to budget increases in staff salaries along with other increases in the necessities of operating a jail. 

With the correctional facility averaging about 45-50 billable hours per month, the increase will amount to an extra $445 per month to help cover expenses.

The increase is still well below the allowable limit set by the KDOC, which is $94.29.&nbsp;

Co. Commission approves inmate increase to KDOC

Kan. — February is designated as Black History Month, but Darrell Pope, former long-time leader of the NAACP in Hutchinson, made clear Tuesday that being included in all of history is vitally important.

"I don't know why that they have relegated it to one month saying Black History," Pope said. "We're actually talking about American History, World History, because of the part that has been played. The contributions that have been made by all segments of our society, those persons that have been marginalized continue to be marginalized, even as great as their contributions were, by relegating it to one month."

Diversity is important, but inclusion is the next step to making the community equal.

"When you start providing inclusion, where everybody's brought to the table and has a chance to participate, that's one step in finding out that we all have a contribution to make," Pope said. "We all can peacefully coexist."

Dr. Hence Parson noted that it is important to make the approach in love. Pope agreed, but he also said it's incumbent on the community to continue to look for qualified people.

"If we look out across the boardroom and we see that we have certain demographics not represented, we have to be deliberate in going out and including those people," Pope said. "I think we can find them. Some excuses I hear sometimes, how do you get people involved? How do you find them? You're deliberate. You go out. I tell people all the time, if I'm looking for apples, I'm not going to go to an orange grove, I'm going to an apple orchard. You go where people are and you are deliberate about offering them those opportunities to participate."

Parson talked about offering town hall meetings, and maybe even moving some government meetings to the time when working people can participate. He also noted that in order to know history, you need to not be ashamed of it and you need to include everybody to get a true picture of what history is all about.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department will be offering an orientation class for those interested in becoming a childcare provider.&nbsp;

Childcare class offered by Reno County Health Department

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Superior Boiler announced Tuesday that Scott Avery has been named Regional Sales Manager for Superior Holding.

In his new role, Avery will have business development and sales management oversight for certain geographic areas near Superior Holding’s East Coast office in Richmond, Virginia. His responsibilities encompass developing new business and supporting customers and end users for all Superior Boiler product lines in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

Avery has been a part of Superior Boiler’s success since joining the company in 2016. He most recently was Project Manager for the watertube division, handling some of the company’s most complex projects.

Superior recently moved its water tube boiler facility to Hutchinson from Richmond.

Superior Holding announces new regional sales manager

El DORADO. Kan. — A man who started as a corrections officer at Hutchinson Correctional facility has been named the new warden at the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

Kansas Secretary of Corrections Jeff Zmuda announced today the selection of Tommy Williams as the new warden of El Dorado Correctional Facility. Williams began his new role as warden on February 20, having previously served as deputy warden for the facility since April 2021.

Williams began his career at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) in June 1984. His work assignments have included corrections officer and corrections specialist in the training department where he co-founded KDOC’s Defensive Tactics program. He has also served as an investigator for Enforcement Apprehension Investigations (EAI), corrections counselor and unit team manager.

While in Hutchinson, Williams served on the board for Sexual Assault Domestic Violence of Reno County and two terms as a commissioner for the Human Relations Commission of Hutchinson.&nbsp; He is an alumnus of both Leadership Reno County and Kansas Leadership Center of Wichita.&nbsp;

KDOC names Williams as Warden in El Dorado

The Board of Reno County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a resolution to give additional authority to the County Administrator and Emergency Management Director in emergency situations like the wildfires that have plagued the eastern part of the county in the past several weeks. The main point is to put into official language the already established practice of allowing director Adam Weishaar to deploy resources and therefore spend money in rural fire districts in those situations.

"This resolution gives me that authority, that budgetary authority, where I can say, we have to do this and this is why," Weishaar told the commission. "I'll justify it, just like I currently do, but knowing that the fire chief can't get upset by it. We have that authority in place."

Commission chair Daniel Friesen expedited the work, which was due on the agenda next month, to Tuesday's meeting because of the ongoing fire risks in the county.

"This isn't a negative thing for any of the fire districts," Friesen said. "I think, over time, we've realized that more coordination is highly critical for the county. I think it's important to go ahead and adopt this resolution to give additional authority to the county and its professional partners."

The main text of the resolution reads as follows:

1. The Reno County Administrator shall have the authority to appoint all District Fire Chiefs, including interim District Fire Chiefs, subject to approval by the governing body. The Reno County Administrator shall have the authority to discipline all District Fire Chiefs, including the authority to suspend or terminate their respective appointments to office.

2. In the absence of any Fire District Fire Chief, the County Administrator may name an interim Fire Chief, or name the County Fire Administrator as interim chief, and shall consult and obtain approval from the Board of County Commissioners on a permanent replacement as soon as practicable.

3. All Fire Chiefs, employees and volunteers of the Fire Districts are administratively responsible to the County Administrator. The County Administrator may delegate administrative oversight of the Fire Chiefs to the County Emergency Management Director and the County Fire Administrator as the County Administrator sees fit.

4. The Reno County Emergency Management director or his/her designee shall have authority on scene in any county fire district. This operational authority includes coordination of more than one fire district or with municipalities, ensuring compliance with fire district practices, and making any operational budgetary decisions. Fire Chiefs shall follow any order issued by the Reno Emergency Management director or designee during such emergency.

5. The County Administrator is hereby authorized to permit other municipalities to perform fire mitigation operations within any fire district in the County. Any fire mitigation operations which require county reimbursement shall be presented to the County Commission for approval.

More power given to county administrator, emergency manager in case of fires

HAVEN Kan. — The Haven City Council approved two land purchases that will be a part of the new Wildcat Landing development during Monday’s meeting.&nbsp; The two option to purchase agreements were for resident Myron Miller for $11,750 and USD 312 for $50,000.

City Clerk Leslie Atherton noted the smaller purchase could come out of the Economic Development 2022 budget, and the larger purchase could be covered by funds set aside for a housing development in the capital improvement fund.&nbsp;

The city tried for a moderate-income housing grant for 2022, but was unsuccessful. The city still wants to continue to move forward with Wildcat Landing as much as makes sense, with a few other grant options available in the future. Atherton said she thinks Haven will look like a more attractive grant candidate once the land has been purchased.&nbsp;

Also Monday night, the council appointed a new member. Austin Borden was appointed to the vacant seat on the council and also was appointed as the third member to the Ambulance Board.

The council also approved two public works purchases. One for generator repairs at the water tower at a cost not to exceed $18,000 and another for replacing a light pole at the intersection of Arlington and K-96 that was damaged in a vehicle accident. Insurance will likely pay for the damaged light, which will cost about $12,000 to replace.

&nbsp;The council went with the low bid from Daily Enterprises of Nickerson at a cost of $1,500 per month. They replace Woolsey Monument who had taken care of the Wildmead Cemetery for the past three years. The new contract begins in March.

The sexton will trim trees at the cemetery along with trimming grass and mowing the grounds. The contractor will also be in charge of cleaning monuments and resetting them. The position also includes setting flags for Memorial Day and raising flags for memorial services when asked by the city.&nbsp;

The council said the lower bid and the fact that Daily is a local resident were the reasons for going with the new contract.

HAVEN, Kan. — One of the four finalists for the Haven USD 312 superintendent's position was postponed last Thursday because of weather. USD 312 announced Monday that the candidate will interview this coming Thursday.

The interview process will be on the same schedule and a public reception will be held at the high school library from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. that day.

The district is looking to replace current superintendent Clark Wedel, who recently announced his retirement.

— The Buhler City Council will meet in regular session Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

On the agenda is a new agreement with Hutch Rec for operations of the Buhler swimming pool at Wheatland Park. This would be the third year that Hutch Rec has operated the pool in Buhler.

The council will also set the city's refuse rates for the year and take action on stop signs at the intersection of Regier and Avenue B.

The council will also hear the annual report from the Buhler Library and receive reports from staff. The meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Buhler city offices at 219 North Main.

"We do not rehearse, because nothing we do on stage actually comes out, until we think of it," said Karen Ridgway. "We have a lot of audience participation. The audience will give us inspirations, from which we will do skits and it just flies off the top of our heads."

Because of that, each performance, much like an athletic event, will be unique. 

"The nice part for the community is, if you like this type of comedy improv, there are no two shows that are the same," Ridgway said. "It doesn't matter if we play the same games, or do the same kind of long-form skit, every time it's different, because our inspiration and the things that we work off of are all provided to us by the audience."

The Main Street Players include Ridgway, Kara Ayers, PJ Ford, Jessie Gray, Tim Haas, Diana Kluttu, Dashona Mahoney, Lisa Sack and Ron Sylvester.

"We do become quite a team," Ridgway said. "We know where each other's strengths are and where each other's weaknesses are and we're up there to not let any one of us fail."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Faris Elementary School principal, James Moffett, is set to present on the main stage of the Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools Conference in Houston, Texas&nbsp; Tuesday.

Moffett has served as principal at Faris since 2020, and has a background in trauma-informed practices in education. Along with serving as principal at Faris, Moffett owns his own educational consulting firm, JM Educational Consulting. As a consultant, Moffett has traveled the country to work with educators on implementing effective trauma-informed practices in their schools.

While at the conference, Moffett will have the opportunity to share his knowledge on trauma-informed practices through applied steps educators can take back to their buildings after the conference.

“Trauma-informed practices” refers to a style of care provided within schools that is sensitive to trauma that students may have experienced. This is done through methods such as redirection, open communication, and moving away from traditional discipline.

USD 308 Principal James Moffett to speak at conference Tuesday

MANHATTAN, Kansas — The Kansas Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the 2022 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Funds for the program are awarded to the agency by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service.

The grant funds are in turn granted to projects and organizations to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops by leveraging efforts to market and promote specialty crops; assisting producers with research and development relevant to specialty crops; expanding availability and access to specialty crops; and addressing local, regional, and national challenges confronting specialty crop producers. Specialty crops are defined by the USDA as “fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture.”

Applications will be evaluated by a team of external reviewers. The team will rate proposals on their ability to successfully promote specialty crops in Kansas and make a positive impact on the Kansas economy. KDA Announces specialty crop grant opportunity

YODER, Kan. — 
The Liverwurst and Fried Mush fundraiser for Mennonite Friendship Communities is coming up Friday. The funds raised pay for care for those who have outlived their funds.

"One of the special things about Mennonite Friendship Communities is the care and compassion that happens every day when we're providing services to the residents of our campus," said Executive Director Dawn Veh. "It's just the best feeling and one of the most caring atmospheres that I've ever been in my 35 years of long term care."

Volunteer Leroy Hershberger said the fundraiser typically feeds 700 to 900 people.

"On the day, we probably have about 100 volunteers all together," Hershberger said. "They're doing the frying, preparing, serving, doing refills, just making sure everything runs well."

This year's event is the 12th event. It had been an annual event prior to 2021. They missed last year because of COVID-19.

"A typical plate is two or three slices of fried cornmeal mush, sausage and or a sausage size portion of wurst," Hershberger said. "It's rich. You don't eat a lot of that. It comes with your choice of cream or tomato gravy ladled over the top and add some onions and hot peppers to taste."

The event is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Journey @ Yoder. The church is about one mile north of the town of Yoder off Yoder Road. The meal is by freewill donation. They typically raise between $15,000 and $18,000 for MFC at the supper.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. The number of reported active COVID cases in Reno County has fallen below 200.

As of Monday morning, the active case count stands at 199, the lowest since November 3, 2021. The total number of cases did increase by 21 over the weekend but the active case count fell by 20. The number of deaths from COVID stayed at 219.

There are currently 18 county residents hospitalized. The vaccination rate has stayed the same over the past five days at 54.29% or 33,898.

Active COVID case count continues to fall in Reno County

We have officially entered the countdown to spring break mindset in our household. The recent winter blasts that have netted a few snow days for the kids are no longer acceptable for my children. They are ready for an extended, week-long break from school. And in their eyes, it can’t get here soon enough!

They ask me daily how many more days until their beloved break begins. They have been constantly discussing in detail the grand plans they have for their week-long hiatus from all school responsibilities. My daughter is already planning out her wardrobe of sundresses, sandals and swimsuits, while my son is brainstorming plans for an adventure course he plans to build in our pasture. 

We have less than a month until my two can experience the “freedom” that they have been dreaming of daily, and there is no denying that their anticipation is showing loud and clear.

When I asked my third-grader why he’s so adamant about aggressively marking each day off the giant calendar that hangs in our mudroom, his response surprised me.

“Mom, the closer we get to spring break means the closer we are to summer break,” he told me.

“And once it’s Summer Break, I can spend all of my time on the farm,” he added.

I immediately made a mental note to increase the amount of chores for my boy this summer to ensure he will look forward to returning to school in the fall.

For me, our children’s spring break is the final visible block on our family’s calendar of calmness prior to the start of an incredibly busy season on our farm.

Aside from the expected spring sports practices and games that will begin occupying time slots during my evenings and weekends following spring break, the overall pace within our household will dramatically shift as well.

Our winter evenings together at the dinner table will transition to meals hurriedly prepared and delivered out to fields while we plant our crops for next fall’s harvest.

I’ll increase my audiobook consumption while navigating the dirt roads to deliver seed and equipment while the kids attend their final months of school.

My visits to the local tractor dealership will become more frequent as I anticipate making many trips into town for parts as well.

Secretly, I hope it takes a while for spring break to arrive this year. I want to soak up the calmness of the current season that we’re in. Unfortunately, I think I’m outnumbered in our house, and these next few weeks will quickly pass and usher in another season on the farm.

Kan. — Hopeful entrepreneurs can learn the fundamentals of starting and running a business through the Entrepreneurship Business Basics JUMP© (EBB JUMP) program March 21 through June 6, sponsored by StartUp Hutch, The City of Hutchinson – Human Relations Office, Network Kansas and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce. This 12-week course is geared toward those who might not consider themselves to be entrepreneurs with the goal of helping transform their business from idea to launch.

“We’re really hoping to connect folks to the system who might otherwise be intimidated or uncertain about how to proceed with entrepreneurship. Whether that’s a person from a minority group, or a rural white person living in poverty, we want everyone with an entrepreneurial interest to know that this is for them,” said Dave Sotelo, Human Relations Officer, City of Hutchinson. “Maybe you’re making goods and selling them on Facebook Marketplace, but you don’t know where to begin when it comes to taking that next step. Sign up for this class, and you’ll learn the basics and beyond.”&nbsp;

The class will meet every Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This course is valued at $700, but for those who sign up by March 6, the fee is $50, and $100 for those who sign up March 7 or later. On the last day of the course, a pitch contest will be held with the winner earning $1,000 to help make their business a reality.
