SOUTH HUTCHINSON,
Kan. —Sallee Lawn Care is the latest Market South Hutch Business of the Month. 

"I've been doing it full time since 1992, I did it when I was in the 7th and 8th grade, started mowing yards on the side," said owner Brad Sallee. "I was just doing it as something for a little income, just money on the side to help pay the bills. I enjoy working outside. Kind of, one thing led to another. My dad was working at a full time job. He was helping me part time on evenings and weekends. It just kind of blossomed into, I needed him more and then I needed other people."

The business employs ten people right now and they typically keep ten to fifteen depending on the time of year and they are going to need more people as spring comes on. Sallee is really glad they landed in South Hutch.

"We bought the building down here in South Hutch," Sallee said. "We were looking for something bigger. It wasn't anything specific to South Hutch, but it's turned out to be a really good deal for us. We're really thankful to be here. The city of South Hutch has been real, real helpful. They're very welcoming and positive. It's been a good place for us to expand our business."

Care is the key word in Sallee Lawn Care.

"I think that we listen and communicate really well," Sallee said. "I think it has to be there at the forefront. We really do take pride in what we do. We like making people's yards look good."

It's important to start lawn care as soon as the weather allows.

"We want to get the pre-emergent out as quickly as possible to green up the yards," Sallee said. "We like to do clean-ups. We try to work deals with them, can we come out and get a cleanup and get your yard fertilized and we're trying to build up for the spring, get everybody greened up."

Sallee noted that it is hard to get good help and to get parts to keep the equipment running, in addition to the obvious increase in fuel costs. 

At the end of the day, there are lots of lawn care services that do the job, but Sallee Lawn Care is committed to making sure that both the people working and the customers they serve have a smile on their face.

Kan. — A new online pharmacy from the owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team and star of TV's Shark Tank, Mark Cuban is hoping to make prescriptions cheaper through competition. 

The <a href="https://costplusdrugs.com/">Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company</a> offers more than 100 generic drugs, which according the company, are priced at the costs of making them, plus a 15 percent markup and a $3 pharmacy fee and $5 for shipping.

Free market policy expert Phil Kerpen with American Commitment is glad to see competition, though he admits it is limited.

"The good thing is, you can shop around," Kerpen said. "Maybe there are some things that are better from your local pharmacy and your insurance and some things that are better with what Cuban's doing, but the point, which is really going to open a lot of eyes is, we've built an extremely complex and confusing system for distributing prescription drugs."

It's important to note that name brand medicines are not available and you have to pay the whole price out of pocket.

"The pharmacy benefit managers in theory represent the buyers, the pharmacies," Kerpen said. "They should be negotiating for lower prices. They often don't negotiate for lower prices from the manufacturer. Instead they say, give us a higher price and give us a large rebate. Then we can charge the senior or the consumer at the point of sale a copay or a deductible based on the very high list price and we can divert the rebates to our bottom line. In any other government program besides Medicare Part D, that would be an illegal kickback, but in Medicare Part D, they have an exemption from the federal anti-kickback statute."

True pricing for drugs is the first step in saving everyone money. 

"When you actually have a real cash price that was negotiated to be a low price rather than a high price with a high rebate that someone else pockets, a lot of times it's lower than what you're paying with insurance."

President Donald Trump tried to get rebates passed on from pharmacy benefit managers to customers at the point of sale, but that move was ultimately blocked. Current legislative leadership wants to control drug prices through charging high fees to drug makers who don't agree to negotiate prices with the government.

Kerpen: New pharmacy from Mark Cuban limited, but positive idea

RENO COUNTY—A Hutchinson man was injured in an accident just after noon Saturday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Lexus LS driven by 19-year-old Colton D. Fast of Hutchinson was westbound on U.S. 50 just west of Scott Boulevard when the driver lost control of the vehicle. 

It struck the guard rail several times before coming to a stop on the south side of the roadway.

EMS transported Fast to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hutchinson man hospitalized after car strikes guardrail

Kan. —&nbsp;Central Christian School&nbsp;will host a community&nbsp;blood&nbsp;drive&nbsp;with the American Red Cross on&nbsp;March&nbsp;7&nbsp;from&nbsp;1:00 p.m. to&nbsp;6:00 p.m. in the CCS Commons.

In their January update, the American Red Cross states that it is "facing a national blood crisis- our worst blood shortage in over a decade, posing a concerning risk to patient care." The Red Cross has had less than a one-day supply of critical blood types in recent weeks. 

They work with hospitals around-the-clock to help meet the needs of patients, but blood product distributions to hospitals are currently outpacing the number of blood donations coming in.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Public Transportation Department (Rcat) will begin operation of the newly-approved Fixed Route changes effective at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 28.&nbsp;

The changes were approved by the Reno County Commission and The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). Public comment regarding the changes has been accepted over the past month.&nbsp;

New Rcat routes begin Monday

Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County commission chair Daniel Friesen sees the updating of the pay scale for the county as long overdue.

"We were so far behind," Friesen said. "We were losing good people. Our attrition rate, our turnover rate was very high and we were failing to fill really important positions, like sheriff deputies. I strongly believe we get what we pay for and we needed a policy that provided some consistency."

Friesen understands that the county can't always be competitive with everyone, but they should try to be competitive within the government sector.

"Total increase, I think, was about 12% across the board for budgeting purposes," Friesen said. "We directed the county administrator that should not increase taxes at the end of the day. He was able to accomplish that. In fact, we've lowered taxes this year by 5% in the county."

Friesen also agrees that being competitive for those looking for a first job is key to allowing people to start their careers in public service.

"That was probably our worst deficiency is we couldn't get entry-level people in the door," Friesen said. "That's a great place for government to play in, is getting individuals started. We don't always, and I don't think we should, compete with the private sector on some of the more expensive jobs, but certainly need to pay a fair wage in some of the entry level jobs."

Friesen said he's glad the commission was able to acknowledge the employees hard work for the community.

Friesen: Pay scale adjustment was needed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It is still wait-and-see for the city of Hutchinson when it comes to the purchase of the Atrium Hotel property.

This comes after asbestos was discovered, pumping the cost for the property up another $500,000 — something the city will now have to address.

“It takes the price point of the acquisition to a point that is concerning,” City Manager Jeff Cantrell said. “And in discussion with the governing body, we felt it was appropriate to seek price concessions from the owner.”

So far, the city has not heard from Joshua Joseph, who closed the hotel two years ago.&nbsp;

“To date, we have not heard back with regard to those requests,” Cantrell said. “We’ll probably wait a little bit longer and see if we hear something, but it may be time to consider plan B.”

According to Cantrell, that could be just about anything, although he could not go into specifics.

“There have been multiple options discussed in the past and I’m sure those would come up again,” Cantrell said. “Maybe some new locations would be discussed as well, but that would involve multiple stakeholders.”

The city has been trying to purchase the Atrium from Joseph since it closed. Former City Manager John Deardoff had entered into an agreement with a development company before the pandemic derailed any real plans to deal with the hotel and convention center.&nbsp;

City facing more questions regarding Atrium's future

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School has a day care center that sometimes needs items to operate.&nbsp;

Recently, the high school's Family Career Community Leaders of America went to work to help out the day care by holding a needs drive.

The organization collected everything from wipes and socks, to toys, food, books and other needed items. The students delivered the items to the day care last week.

HHS Day Care benefits from efforts of student organization

HAVEN, Kan. —Craig Idacavage, currently a principal in his sixth year in Leavenworth, has been named as the new Haven USD 312 superintendent to replace Clark Wedel who will retire at the end of the school year.

Idacavage, a native of Caldwell, Kansas, emerged from four finalists interviewed in February. He was the 2020 Kansas Elementary Principal of the Year from the Kansas Principals Association. 

Board President Chris Powell said Idacavage emerged from a very thorough search process as the right candidate to lead Haven USD 312.

Before going to Leavenworth, Idacavage served as a principal and activities director in the Renwick and North Lyon County districts.

Haven USD 312 names new superintendent

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The second of three legislative forums presented by the Hutchinson/ Reno County Chamber of Commerce is set for March 5. The forum will run from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC campus.&nbsp;

Reno County legislators invited to participate include Representatives Joe Seiwert, Paul Waggoner, Jason Probst, and Michael Murphy, along with Senator Mark Steffen. Steffen was unable to attend in February. Written questions will be accepted that morning. Questions may also be submitted in advance at <a href="http://hutchchamber.com/advocacy/legislativeforum">hutchchamber.com/advocacy/legislativeforum</a>.

Next chamber legislative forum is March 5

Kan. — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/cb4b007e-485f-4c93-8343-4e4008cb77a2">The Board of Reno County Commissioners has made a change in fire policy as of Tuesday</a>, but they are also looking at a change in personnel, as they prepare to add a fire administrator.

"The county administrator intends to start interviewing soon," said commission chair Daniel Friesen. "That will be an added benefit to this coordination effort. The current emergency management crew is understaffed for the amount of work they are doing right now. That will be a good add."

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/810abda8-5927-4b3d-b3ce-a086dcce5cf0">The addition of a fire administrator was a recommendation of emergency management staff last June</a> after a study was conducted about the county's fire needs.

"We have a lot of superb volunteer fire departments across the county," Friesen said. "They are invaluable to all of our firefighting efforts. They have other jobs. They can't focus daily on some of the professional work. The intent is to bring a coordinating head to the fire districts. I think there's ongoing discussion on some of the particulars on how that will work."

The new county fire administrator will be able to be temporarily appointed in the case of the vacancy in the chief's position in any of the county's fire districts, but it is not the intent at this point to have that administrator be a fire chief for any of them on an ongoing basis.

Kan. — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/cb4b007e-485f-4c93-8343-4e4008cb77a2">The Board of Reno County Commissioners has made a change in fire policy as of Tuesday</a>, but they are also looking at a change in personnel, as they prepare to add a fire administrator."The county administrator intends to start interviewing soon," said commission chair Daniel Friesen. "That will be an added benefit to this coordination effort. The current emergency management crew is understaffed for the amount of work they are doing right now. That will be a good add."<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/810abda8-5927-4b3d-b3ce-a086dcce5cf0">The addition of a fire administrator was a recommendation of emergency management staff last June</a> after a study was conducted about the county's fire needs."We have a lot of superb volunteer fire departments across the county," Friesen said. "They are invaluable to all of our firefighting efforts. They have other jobs. They can't focus daily on some of the professional work. The intent is to bring a coordinating head to the fire districts. I think there's ongoing discussion on some of the particulars on how that will work."The new county fire administrator will be able to be temporarily appointed in the case of the vacancy in the chief's position in any of the county's fire districts, but it is not the intent at this point to have that administrator be a fire chief for any of them on an ongoing basis.

Reno County still looking to add fire administrator as part of policy change

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of active reported COVID cases in Reno County fell by 65 over the past 24 hours to 120.

The number is the lowest since August 3 of 2021, and down 1,377 cases from the start of the month. The number of new cases increased by 11 over the past 24 hours bringing the total number of new cases for the month to 719 and an overall total of 17,708 since the pandemic began. The county has been averaging about 10 new cases per day over the past 10 days

The number of county residents vaccinated did increase over the past several days to 33,990 or about 54.4%. The death toll from the virus is at 219.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A group of investors is betting that, if a new building is built, it will draw a business or industry to the area. A local group of investors wants to put a new building in the industrial park located just south of Siemens Gamesa.

Salt City Investments LLC is proposing to issue $4 million in industrial revenue bonds (IRBs) for the project. The building would be a 57,000-square-foot facility that would allow a new business or industry to build in a very short period of time. The building would be expandable and will be served by the rail spur already in place. The matter will go before the city council for a public hearing and possible action on a resolution supporting the IRBs for the project.

The need for available buildings has always been an issue in Hutchinson, although the city has been able to fill the old Eaton facility and the building now occupied by Superior Boiler following an expansion.&nbsp;

The local investors are confident the building will attract a business or industry and that similar projects could come in the future. The public hearing is a part of Tuesday’s Hutchinson City Council meeting starting at 9 a.m.at the Hutchinson city offices.

IRB request goes before Hutchinson City Council Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Seventeen Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) residents were recently named to the President’s Honor Roll, with another nine named to the Vice President’s Honor Roll, for classes taken at Hutchinson Community College throughout 2020 and 2021.

“Even under the best academic conditions, this would be a noteworthy achievement,” Kansas Secretary of Corrections Jeff Zmuda said. “But to do so while a resident in a correctional facility is a true indication of personal discipline and commitment.”

Participating in college programs while incarcerated can make the difference to an individual’s success upon release. While many factors contribute to that success, finding a steady job that pays a livable wage is critical.

“We are beginning to see more and more success stories as our programs increase and more residents participate,” Zmuda said.

Education programs are available at all Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) facilities, though specific programs vary by location. For the Spring 2022 semester, approximately 60 HCF residents are enrolled in 14 different classes through the community college. All instruction is delivered at the facility, with additional resources available online using APDS (American Prison Data Systems) tablets.

HutchCC offers an Associate of Applied Science Technical Studies degree at the correctional facility, consisting of 60 hours of college programming. Included in those hours are trade classes in HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical and Carpentry, plus several business classes and electives such as Fundamentals of Sociology and Intro to Psychology.

“I am hearing very encouraging remarks from the residents in our classes and we have a growing waitlist,” Cindy Rowland, HutchCC education coordinator for the correctional facility said. “We have met with our private industry employers who are supportive of working with us so the men can keep their jobs and attend school at the same time.”

Residents pay tuition to take classes and can receive support through U.S. Department of Education Second Chance Pell Grants.

Honor Roll students named at HCF

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After delays caused by the weather, work will get back underway on the new video scoreboard at the south end of Gowan’s Stadium.

Hutchinson Public Works says that westbound 11th Avenue in the area of Gowans Stadium will be closed starting Monday, Feb 28. The street will be closed until Wednesday, March 2, weather permitting.

East 11th near Plum closed starting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Higher prices and a strong Christmas shopping season propelled Reno County’s sales tax above the half-million dollar mark for the first time ever.

The county’s sales tax revenue for February totaled $533,495, which is more than $33,000 higher than last year's figure. There was one time the sales tax figure jumped above the $500,000 mark, but that was when the county retired the bonds for the jail, which artificially increased the September 2019 numbers.&nbsp;

This month's figure is also $109,000 ahead of last month. For the first two months of the year, the county has taken in almost $957,000.

The February tax numbers reflect shopping trends for the month of December.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Labor and Delivery Unit at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC) received its sixth consecutive High 5 for Mom and Baby designation, recognizing the unit’s commitment to infant and maternal health by assisting new mothers to successfully initiate and maintain breastfeeding.

The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, a statewide organization headquartered in Hutchinson, founded High 5 for Mom and Baby to facilitate conversation and action to improve health outcomes throughout Kansas.

To achieve the designation, the Labor and Delivery Unit was required to complete a voluntary and self-reported evaluation and follow a series of evidence-based practices. Included among those practices was a requirement to maintain staff competency in lactation support, provide all pregnant women with information and instruction on breastfeeding, assure immediate and sustained skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after birth, and practice “rooming in,” which allows mothers and infants to remain together for 24 hours.

Katie Schoenhoff, Director of Programs at the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, commended the Labor and Delivery Unit for achieving this prestigious designation. “Breastfeeding plays a crucial role in the overall health of babies and mothers,” Schoenhoff said. “Following the High 5 for Mom and Baby practices demonstrates Hutchinson Regional’s commitment to infant and maternal health by helping moms successfully initiate and maintain breastfeeding.”

Along with recognition of being named a High 5 for Mom and Baby facility, Hutchinson Regional also receives ongoing education and training opportunities, support, and resources through a community of delivery centers, and scholarship opportunities for further staff education.

Jill White, Director of Patient Care Services, echoed the sentiments of the unit she leads. “Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for both infants and mothers, and Hutchinson Regional is honored to receive this recognition,” White said. “As a facility committed to providing the highest quality of care, we have found that the High 5 practices and resources not only improve our health outcomes, but they also increase patient satisfaction.”

HRMC recognized for maternal health program

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A group of students of USD 308’s Magnet School at Allen placed well Thursday in the KidWind competition held at Hutchinson Community College.

The team of Kruz Hernandez, Zoey Schletzbaum, Dalton Urban, Liam Clark and Gatlin Loepp finished in second place and will move on to the state competition.

The regional competition featured students from across south-central Kansas constructing and testing their own wind turbine. After registering for KidWind, the teams at Allen partnered with the Kansas Energy Program to receive wind turbines, generators, wind tunnels and other supplies to prepare for the competition.&nbsp;

Teachers Keith Gable and Hannah Schletzbaum served as coaches for the student teams, working with them over the last three weeks to learn about wind turbines, practice teamwork, and sharpen their public speaking skills.

The state competition will be held in April

The group that is raising money to put up veterans banners in Hutchinson is having a public event Saturday for those who want to pay and sign up in person.

The event is at Splinters-N-Rust at 125 N Main from 10 a.m. to noon. You can get signed up for a Veterans Honor Banner &amp; meet the members of the Vieyra Honors Foundation Board.

Each banner is $200. They just need some basic information on your veteran and a photo. The deadline to buy a banner is March 11. The banners will be hung between Memorial Day and the 4th of July this year.

The Hutchinson Boys and Girls Clubs is raising funds to assist with job shadows and summer internships in its Epic Skillz area.

"It's about taking kids, even at the elementary school level and starting to bring them along that career pathway," said Lance Patterson with Hutchinson Boys and Girls Clubs, "They can see what they are interested in, give them some hands on experiences, get out into the community. I think that's probably the coolest thing, to see these kids out in the community and the questions that they can ask."

The dates for the $10,000 fundraising campaign are from Feb. 27 to March 11.

"We're starting to give these kids that opportunity," Patterson said. "They see that if you go to the hospital, you can have 25 different careers just within the hospital and none of them are a doctor or a nurse."

The goal may seem large, but even small donations can help, according to Elycia Lance with the club.

"Ten dollars donation is enough to pay one student job shadowing for one day," Lance said. "It may be a little ambitious, but I think that we can do this in two weeks."

Idacavage, currently a principal in his sixth year in Leavenworth, is interviewing to replace Clark Wedel who will retire at the end of the school year.

Each candidate is meeting with Wedel and two board members for about 20 minutes before a tour of the district's facilities throughout the day. The candidate will then have a break for lunch with district administrators and directors.

Following the tours, a come and go reception will be held for the public from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. at the Haven High School Library. Following dinner, the board will hold the formal interview with Idacavage.&nbsp;

Final candidate to interview for Haven superintendent position

Kan. —&nbsp;Judy Collins is playing the Fox Theatre in Hutchinson next month, and she's still creating and making music, even after more than 60 years singing professionally.

"I have a new album that's coming out called Spellbound," Collins said. "For the first time, it's an album of all my own songs, all my own writing. I've written songs consistently throughout these years. One of the advantages of that is, a lot of people know my history and know my hit songs, but they also welcome the new songs that I have sung."

Collins recalls the first time she was asked about writing her own music.

"The first song I ever wrote myself, I wrote because Leonard Cohen brought me his songs," Collins said. "When he asked me why I wasn't writing my own songs, I wrote a song called, Since You've Asked, which a lot of people have sung at their weddings."

Collins keeps herself up physically and mentally so she can continue to perform live.

"I would probably not be on the planet at all if I did not have this career," Collins said. "It demands all the things you need to do to stay on the planet and still wake up every day with a new idea."

Kan. —&nbsp;Judy Collins is playing the Fox Theatre in Hutchinson next month, and she's still creating and making music, even after more than 60 years singing professionally."I have a new album that's coming out called Spellbound," Collins said. "For the first time, it's an album of all my own songs, all my own writing. I've written songs consistently throughout these years. One of the advantages of that is, a lot of people know my history and know my hit songs, but they also welcome the new songs that I have sung."Collins recalls the first time she was asked about writing her own music."The first song I ever wrote myself, I wrote because Leonard Cohen brought me his songs," Collins said. "When he asked me why I wasn't writing my own songs, I wrote a song called, Since You've Asked, which a lot of people have sung at their weddings."Collins keeps herself up physically and mentally so she can continue to perform live."I would probably not be on the planet at all if I did not have this career," Collins said. Judy Collins to play at Hutchinson's Fox next month

There is an event coming up for students in Reno County to be part of an oratorical/poster contest commemorating Black History Month.

"It's for grades one through six in USD 308 and surrounding districts," said Dr. Hence Parson. "If your child is interested in being a part of this, go to their principal. Their principals have the forms. Fill out the form, submit them and we're ready to have a good time on March 5, 8 a.m. at the Cosmosphere."

The student would need to enter by February 28, make a poster of a historical African-American and bring their poster to the Cosmosphere at 1100 North Plum at 8 a.m. that day. Each student will step forward and tell the judges about their poster and the figure displayed. 

First place winners will receive $50, second will get $30 and third $25.

Annual Black History Month poster contest event March 5

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) recently recognized eight students for completing the Certified Nurse Aide program.

Medical science instructor Erika Barnes noted the students worked hard in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience to complete the required instructional outcomes for certification. The students received a certificate of completion along with a reception with family members in attendance. 

Also in attendance was Hutchinson High School senior Cristian Padilla, who earned his CNA certificate during the 2020-21 school year and served as a student aide for the second trimester class.&nbsp;

The students will now take their state board exams at Hutchinson Community College. The HCTEA offers three Certified Nurse Aide courses each year in partnership with the Hutchinson Community College Allied Health Department.

HCTEA students complete CNA program

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board has come to an agreement on a new bond issue for the district, although it is just a number right now. No specifics were given as to where a 10-year, $10.5 million bond would go, although a large list of needs exists.&nbsp;

“The first thing we can do is identify an architect to begin putting together some renderings,” Superintendent Curtis Nightingale said. “Then we will begin whittling through the process of identifying your construction management at risk.”

Nightingale says the district has assembled a list of needs that will be sifted through before decisions are made.

“We did kind of a needs assessment in-house. Obviously those people that are in the buildings the most know where the issues are,” Nightingale said. “We created some lists and then we had a job cost analysis done.”&nbsp;

A facilities committee has been working to weigh what is needed most in the bond. While the bond may not cover everything, the district is also changing the way it uses its capital outlay funds that may help fund projects the bond issue doesn’t cover.

“In the past what school districts would do is just allow that account to grow and then at some point they can use those dollars for a major project,” Nightingale said. “I think the philosophy of the board this time around would be, we’re going to decide on what’s our bottom number, meaning what’s the amount of balance we want to carry over from year to year.”&nbsp;

Once that number is decided, Nightingale says anything above that number will be used for projects that need attention.&nbsp;

Nightingale says the job costs, along with actual construction costs, will determine just how far the $10.5 million will go. No date was set for how soon the district will set what will go into the actual bond proposal.&nbsp;
