HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Students from Hutchinson STEM Magnet School at Allen are set to compete at the regional KidWind competition.

The competition will be hosted at Hutchinson Community College on Thursday. It will feature students from across South Central Kansas constructing and testing their own wind turbine.

Mandy Putnam, a former 8th&nbsp;grade teacher for USD 308, works for the Engineering Department at Kansas State University, and first shared the opportunity with Allen’s principal, Alma Henry. After registering for KidWind, the teams at Allen partnered with the Kansas Energy Program to receive wind turbines, generators, wind tunnels and other supplies to prepare for the competition.

Teachers Keith Gable and Hannah Schletzbaum have served as coaches for the student teams, working with them over the last three weeks to learn about wind turbines, practice teamwork, and sharpen their public speaking skills.

“The process has been a bit of a whirlwind. KidWind utilizes the engineering design process, which is what we are big on here at Allen, so we are working with the students to use what they do on a daily basis. I’m learning right along with the students. It’s been fascinating to see how creative these kids can be,” said Gable, a 6th&nbsp;grade teacher at Allen.

“First we started out with a base, and we’ve been experimenting with different blades. It’s been fun spending time with my friends and practicing. Our wind turbine was fast enough to power a light bulb! I’m nervous and excited to compete, because they only chose so many kids, and I’m glad that I was one of them,” said Gatlin Loepp, a 4th&nbsp;grade competitor at Allen.

After the regional competition hosted at Hutchinson Community College, students have the opportunity to move on to the state portion of the competition held in Topeka in April. The National KidWind Challenge will be held in San Antonio, Texas in May.

STEM Students from Allen compete in regional KidWind Competition

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, KS – The South Hutchinson Fire Department will purchase new personal protective equipment, also known as bunker gear, for the city's volunteer firefighters through a $5,724 grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

“We are grateful for the generosity shown by Firehouse Subs and commend them for being truly invested in our community as a valued stakeholder,” Mayor Matt Nisly stated. “Their commitment to improving public safety is extraordinary.”

The bunker gear will be used to fully equip two firefighters so that they are protected from fires and other harmful conditions that impede rescue operations.

“We want to extend our gratitude to Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and our local Firehouse Subs in Hutchinson for providing us with this grant,” said Chief Shae Barajas Brooks, with the South Hutchinson Fire Department. “These funds will allow us to provide even greater support for the people of South Hutchinson.”

During the most recent grant cycle, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded 127 grants to public safety organizations across the country. The 127 grants totaling nearly $3 million were given to organizations in need of critical lifesaving equipment and resources.

South Hutch Fire to buy bunker gear thanks to Firehouse Subs grant

Gas prices are still well above $3 a gallon, with no real relief in sight.

"Kansas average today is $3.21 a gallon," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "That's up four cents from a week ago and up 22 cents in the last month. Reno County is even higher than the state average."

The Reno County average is $3.28 a gallon, with gas ranging from 3.09 in Arlington to 3.29 in Hutch.

"Anything over $3 gets your attention," Steward said. "We've continued to see those prices rise over the last month or two. Crude oil prices are the big concern right now. They make up 50 to 60% of the price we see at the pump. The big concern in everyone's minds in the oil market right now are the tensions between Ukraine and Russia."

Russia is a large oil producer and any economic sanctions or other supply changes that might come from a potential conflict would likely put further upward pressure on crude oil prices.

"More oil could enter the global market if the United States and Iran are able to complete a new nuclear agreement and sanctions are lifted," Steward said. "That's another potentially positive area that we can look at on the global horizon."

The national gas price average as of Monday is $3.53 a gallon.

Haven City Council meets Monday

&nbsp;MCPHERSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after an overnight standoff in McPherson County.&nbsp;

Just after 1a.m. Sunday, sheriff's deputies responded on an ongoing domestic situation in the 1000 Block of 6th Avenue in rural McPherson County, according to Sheriff Jerry Montagne.

The suspect identified as 39-year-old Justin St John was armed with a rifle and had made threats of violence. Just after 2a.m. the McPherson County Special Response Team was asked to help resolve the situation. Negotiators reached St. John by phone and communicated with him for approximately 30 minutes.&nbsp;

At 4:30a.m., members of the Special Response team took St. John into custody and booked him on requested charges of aggravated assault and criminal threat, according to Montagne.&nbsp; Authorities will forward a report to the county attorney.&nbsp; St. John was no longer in custody Sunday afternoon, according to online jail records.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — They were verbally put in place during the fires, but on Tuesday the Reno County Commission will make two disaster declarations formal during agenda session.

The declarations allowed for the use of resources to help fight the three wildfires that erupted east of Hutchinson over the past 10 days.

Those resources included mutual aid and the use of the Kansas Forest Service aerial tanker to help with the Albright fire.

Also Tuesday, the board will go over a fiber lease agreement with Ideatek and the purchase of five new portable litter catch fences for the landfill at a cost of $43,240. All are part of the consent agenda.

The board will also hear the yearly update from emergency management and take action to raise the reimbursement rate cost to house state parole violators.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County annex.

Tim Woolsey with Woolsey Monument Company of Hutchinson and Daily Enterprises of Nickerson both will submit proposals to the council for upkeep of the Wildmead Cemetery.

The city is looking for a sexton to trim trees at the cemetery along with trimming grass and mowing the grounds. The contractor will also be in charge of cleaning monuments and resetting them. The position also includes setting flags for Memorial Day and raising flags for memorial services when asked by the city.&nbsp;

Also Monday, the council will go over changes to the personnel manual and go over a quote for software upgrades.&nbsp;

Nickerson City Council to look over cemetery proposals

WASHINGTON, D.C. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann was part of a bi-partisian group to introduce resolution designating Feb. 19-26 as National FFA Week. Nearly 90 co-sponsors joined the effort in the U.S. House of Representatives and it was also introduced in the U.S. Senate.&nbsp;

In addition to designating National FFA Week, the resolution also recognizes the important role of the National FFA Organization in developing the next generation of leaders who will change the world and celebrates 70 years of the National FFA Organization’s membership magazine, now called New Horizons.

“The future is making strong demands,” Mann said. “By the year 2030, the global population is expected to surpass eight billion people. Now more than ever, we need young people with the foresight, creativity, and skills necessary to meet the challenges of delivering food, fiber, and fuel to the world. The National FFA Organization, state FFA associations, and local FFA chapters across the country give students the tools and resources they need to tackle those problems head-on. As a past chapter FFA officer from Quinter, Kansas, proud FFA alumnus, and founder of the Congressional FFA Caucus, I am honored to introduce this resolution to celebrate National FFA Week.”

Rep. Mann helped launch the Congressional FFA Caucus in December of 2021. The organization serves to raise the profile of school-based agricultural education and FFA, and to develop relationships between Congress and the next generation of leaders in food and agriculture. Mann part of resolution supporting FFA

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man who escaped from the minimum security unit at Hutchinson Correctional Facility Friday morning is back in custody.

The Kansas Department of Corrections says Gabriel Sanchez Jr. has been apprehended after being placed on escape status earlier today from the Hutchinson Correctional Facility Minimum Custody South Unit.

Local law enforcement, the Kansas Highway Patrol and KDOC officials collaborated in the search and arrest.

Sanchez is currently serving a sentence for convictions in Reno County for assault and battery of a law enforcement officer and fleeing/eluding local law enforcement.

The escape is currently being investigated. No additional information is available at this time.

Sanchez, a 29-year-old white male, has brown hair, brown eyes, is 6-feet 1-inch tall and 254 pounds.

Kan. — Central Christian School's annual auction fundraiser is Saturday and you can still help, even if you don't live here.

"If they go to our website, cougarsccs.com, if they scroll down, right there on our main page, there's a big button," said John Walker with Central Christian School. "It will take you to another website called one cause. They can purchase a $10 ticket and that will allow them to bid on the silent auction items."

Walker said there are some special projects they want to raise money for. 

"One of those things would be updating our security camera system at our school," Walker said. "That's just south of $5000 that we're hoping to raise for that project. Then we've got another project where we're hoping to add another concrete pad and add another basketball goal to our elementary playground."

Walker said they have space for a few more students.

"Our enrollment is 182 students this year K-12," Walker said. "We typically fluctuate anywhere from 180 to 200. The 200 mark is really where we'd like to be eventually."

The online silent auction will end at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

CCS Auction coming up Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The investigation continues into the three major wildfires that burned areas east of Hutchinson in the past week. All three fires were caused by smoldering brush piles that may not have been properly tended to.&nbsp;

The fires may change the way the county deals with that type of burning.

“There was a committee put together to look at the existing ordinance and if there’s better ways and alternatives&nbsp; to do business with that burn ordinance within Reno County,” Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer said. “That group wrapped up December's meeting with recommendations that are being put together. These recommendations will be presented to the Reno County Board of Commissioners in the near future.”

Beer says that when any type of burning is done it is the responsibility of the landowner to make sure that the smoldering brush pile is tended to until the fire is completely out. He says that there could even be legal action coming to those who are found responsible for such fires:

“It’s the responsibility of the landowner, '' Beer said. “If you’re going to light up 70 brush piles or whatever, you have to maintain them. That’s your responsibility and if they get away from you you’re going to be held liable.”

The county has been pushing to have property owners clear out trees and other debris from the areas prone to wildfires in order to protect their homes and property, but disposing of those trees also adds to the problem if not done properly.

Stacy Goss, Community Liaison for Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County will make a presentation entitled “Life Hacks for Seniors” to include information on everything from hand held devices to full home assessments and how to age safely in place.

HutchCC live stock judging team excels in Nebraska

MANHATTAN, Kansas — In an effort to help support growth in agriculture, the Kansas Department of Agriculture is calling on industry partners to help identify workforce needs among agricultural employers in the state by conducting the second Kansas Agriculture Workforce Needs Assessment Survey. The survey will help KDA better understand current workforce issues, trends and needs within the Kansas agriculture industry to steer future discussions and identify solutions for positive changes for our state’s leading economic driver — agriculture.

Kansas farmers, ranchers, agribusinesses, manufacturers and producers of agricultural products are all being asked to complete the survey to help KDA identify the number and types of jobs in the state’s agriculture industry, and the specific skills required for those jobs.&nbsp;A similar survey was conducted in 2015 with results released in 2016.

“We continue to hear from our stakeholders that workforce is their number one issue,” said Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “KDA has partnered with several agriculture sectors to begin to mitigate the issue, but we know more needs to be done. This survey will help us better understand the employment needs of all employers in agriculture and help promote long-term workforce solutions for Kansas agriculture.”&nbsp;

KDA seeks input using Agriculture Workforce Needs Assessment Survey

A bill that would allow the production of a license plate with the flag for the city of Hutchinson on it passed out of committee on Thursday.

"Myself and Rep. Waggoner worked together," said Rep. Jason Probst. "Then we got, I believe it was, Seiwert and Murphy also cosigned on to the bill. It did make it out of committee."

Originally Topeka was also a part of the bill, but now it's just a Hutchinson bill.

"It's modeled much after the Wichita legislation that allowed the Wichita city flag to be a license plate," Probst said. "This would allow the use of the flag, but somebody would have to design it and then that would go to the treasurer's office and if you went in and ordered that plate, I believe it's a minimum of $25 extra fee."

The City of Hutchinson or the treasurer's office could charge up to an additional $100 over and above the regular fee.

"That money would then go to the Hutch Rec foundation, to support their efforts on parks and recreation and playground equipment for kids and things like that," Probst said.

There would have to be a minimum order of 250 plates to allow the new plate to be produced. The bill is currently below the line in the House, but could be brought up and voted on any time between now and turnaround.

According to the latest report from the Reno County Health Department the number of reported cases is at 219. The last time the active case count was that low was November 4th of 2021 when it was 217. The active count is down 1,278 from the first of the month.

Total case count increased by 23 in the past 24-hours to 17,641 and hospitalizations are also up in the past day to 20. The death toll in the county from the pandmeic is 219.

The vaccination rate for Reno County stands at 54.2% or 33,898 residents.

Active COVID cases continue downward trend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Recreation Commission was established shortly after WWII as a rec center for teens. Now the rec commission is celebrating its 75th year.

Throughout 2022 Hutch Rec will celebrate in a variety of ways, including a special Passport experience, sponsored by the Hutch Rec Foundation. The Passport will kick off later this spring and will encourage the public to visit Hutch Rec facilities and attend a variety of events and activities. Additional celebrations will be shared on <a href="https://www.hutchrec.com/">hutchrec.com</a> as well as the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/hutchinsonrecreationcommission/">Hutch Rec Facebook</a>, Instagram, and Twitter pages throughout the year.

Originally, the rec center was located at 6th and Main. Months later, the Grandview Neighborhood Association presented the Hutchinson Board of Education with a petition to form an official recreation commission. The referendum was successful and the Hutchinson Recreation Commission officially became established on Jan. 1, 1947.

Over the past several years, the rec commission separated itself with the local school district and became connected with the city of Hutchinson, where together they have been able to make needed renovations to facilities and bring a number of recreational opportunities back to Hutchinson, especially for youth.&nbsp;

Hutch Rec to celebrate 75 years

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 Board of Education will hold a special meeting Monday to further discuss a potential bond issue for the district.

The district has been working on a facilities improvement bond issue ever since the previous vote on a $30 million proposal was soundly defeated.

Superintendent Curtis Nightingale said recently that he is confident they can bring a proposal to the public once the board comes to full agreement on the needs and priorities of the district.&nbsp;

Several personnel matters are also on the agenda before the board holds the workshop on the bond issue. Monday’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th Ave.

USD 309 board to meet in special session

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Children’s Emergency Shelter Home received a donation of goods Wednesday night from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center’s (KLETC) 289th basic training class. The donation was part of the class’s legacy project, a project where each basic training class gives back to the community, and was led by class president Deputy David Carrillo of the Seward County Sheriff’s Office.

“A big reason as to why I joined law enforcement was to be a positive influence for youth,” Carrillo said. “I became inspired after we had our class about crimes against children to try to go a step further to help the local children in our area.”

Shawna Allen, a board member for the Children’s Emergency Shelter Home, was very appreciative of the support from the 289th basic training class.

“Contributions and support from folks like the 289th help to sustain this very important service to children in the area,” Allen said. “We are very grateful for the support and donations received from this class.”

&nbsp;Deputy Carrillo reached out to the shelter to see what items they needed, printed out a list, and distributed it amongst his classmates. Each student purchased a few items for donation, which included toiletries, bedsheets, clothes, backpacks, and toys.&nbsp;

The Children’s Emergency Shelter Home has been in operation since 1958. The Shelter's mission is to provide a safe, secure, loving environment to children removed from their homes through no fault of their own. The goal of the home is to provide short-term residence until a child can return home, be placed in foster care, or be placed in a permanent residence.

KLETC class makes donation to emergency shelter

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Volunteer Center/RSVP's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program continues through April 14th at the Salvation Army.

To be eligible to have your taxes done at the VITA site, you must have less than $58,000 in income in 2021.

You need to bring any applicable IRS forms, like W-2s or 1099s and if you received advance child tax credit payments, you'll need that letter, as well.&nbsp;

You also need proof of ID and Social Security cards for everyone on the return.

One of only two Saturdays that the site is open is this Saturday, Feb. 19. That day they will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The site will be regularly open Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

You can walk in and have your return prepared, or drop it off to have it prepared when time is available.

Loribeth Reynolds with Hutch Rec told Hutch Post the businesses plan to have the sidewalks cleared, and the majority of the event is indoors, so they are going on with it.

Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy is continuing to expand its offerings to students throughout USD 308 and 12 other schools in Central Kansas.

"Starting next year, we'll have 22 career pathways total," said Travis Riebel, Director at HCTEA. "When we look at opportunities for students, the full training programs are shared programs with Hutchinson Community College. We have six particular programs, ranging from Automotive Mechanics, Automotive Collision Repair, Machine Technology, Building Trades and Welding. We also offer medical science training, such as CNA and CMA training."

The key to deciding what direction to go is centered in an individualized plan of study.

"With that, students are able to work with their teachers," Riebel said. "At the high school, we have our seminar teachers who are career advisors. They have conversations starting early on classes they take, career assessments, as well as any career research, college research, post-secondary, whichever that might be, to develop their individual plan as they go through high school and map out their road for post-secondary success, as well."

There are several additional areas that HCTEA will be offering courses in starting in 2022-2023.

"In the computer science realm, we're looking at some beginning coding classes for high school freshmen and sophomores through the project lead the way curriculum," Riebel said. "We're also introducing an agricultural education, to really introduce students to the food and fiber industry, with classes like intro to agriculture, agriscience, animal science and food science, as well as starting an FFA chapter at the school. Other new classes include, drones, unmanned aerial systems. Leanna Gleason, our communications and video broadcasting teacher, she has been incorporating drones into video broadcasting for years, but we're going to offer a course specifically to train students on that technology. It is our responsibility to recruit tomorrow's teachers, so we have a new class called teaching as a career."

They intend to have all of these pathways also include an internship component, so that students can see what they would like and not like about working in the field where they are being trained.

Career and Technical Education continues to grow in USD 308

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— For the Hutchinson Fire Department, the past two weeks between structure fires and wildland fires were tough on personnel and equipment.&nbsp;

Fire Chief Steve Beer says millions of dollars of property value were saved with little dollar loss by HFD and mutual aid partners. Beer says he’s been in the fire service for 35 years. He says Hutchinson has some of the best firefighters around.&nbsp;

Beer said that all of this cannot be done without all the support from the community.&nbsp;

Beer released a statement on the support they received. Here is what he had to say:

“The overwhelming support in prayers for safety, food donations, and just uplifting messages do not go unnoticed. On behalf of all our members at HFD, we thank you. In order to be successful, many others assist. Our Fleet maintenance department keeps our equipment running 24/7. Our public works department brings in heavy equipment to save days of labor intensive work. Our IT and GIS departments keep up our computers and drones out in the field that are used to fight these fires. Our brothers and sisters in blue, HPD and the Sheriff's department are always quick to jump in on what’s needed. Our Reno County Emergency Manager and Kansas Forest Service partners are always in support of our planning and operations.&nbsp; Our new Rehab Response Team of retired firefighters and spouses ensure our firefighters are fed and taken care of. And lastly our 911 dispatch center and mutual aid partners support us on all ends. We thank you.”

Hutch Fire sends message thanking agencies and public for support

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Public Works announced that the intersection of K-14 near Yaggy Field and West 50th Avenue will be closed until further notice.

According to Public Works Director Don Brittain the dirt road was being used by traffic that normally would use 56th Avenue. That road is closed to allow work on the K-14 four lane project. After a bad accident at 50th and K-14 and with the amount of traffic using the road it was decided that the intersection will be closed until further notice.&nbsp;

Local traffic will have access on W. 50th from Yaggy Rd to K-14.
