PLEASANTVIEW —&nbsp;The benefit auction to help Pleasantview resident Shirley Ropp was a major success last week. The event raised $73,205.

Ropp was in the hospital for 12 weeks with COVID-19 and pneumonia.

All&nbsp;Pleasantview area churches and&nbsp;auctioneer Paul Nisly came together to put on the event. 

Between that auction and the SHARE Haiti auction earlier this year, local residents have given over $200,000 to help others so far in 2022.

Kan. — The annual shred event with the consumer protection division of the Kansas Attorney General's office is at the Kansas State Fairgrounds on Thursday.

"We do it to mark National Consumer Protection Week," said Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt. "We do it to provide a direct service to Kansans who want to clean out those file cabinets and come out and have those old unneeded records destroyed. We also do it to remind people how important it is all year around to safeguard our own individual personal information."

Thursday afternoon is the time to bring your documents.

"We're going to be in Hutch on Thursday, the 10th of March from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. out at gate 3 at the State Fairgrounds," Schmidt said. "We invite anybody to come out and bring up to three bags or boxes of old documents and have them safely and professionally destroyed."

The theme of National Consumer Protection Week for this year is how fraud affects every community.

The fire department also announced that all air space restrictions have been lifted.&nbsp;

Hygiene items are needed for our Reno County neighbors whose homes have been destroyed by the fires.&nbsp; Please drop these items off at the United Way of Reno County office, 924 North Main, Hutchinson: toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, deodorant, shampoo, body soap, lotion, female hygiene products, hand sanitizer, shaving cream, disposable razors, toilet paper, Kleenex, diapers (all sizes), combs, brushes, hair ties.

Governor tours fire area, plus some of our first photos of the area

Ideatek pledged $10,000 this week to&nbsp;help families affected by Reno County’s Cottonwood Complex Fire. 

Half of that money will go to Reno County VOAD for general relief and half to the Ideatek customers in the fire area in the form of $250 gift cards.

“IdeaTek is greatly saddened by this tragedy and would like to offer assistance to our home county,” said IdeaTek’s Director of Community Relations Jade Piros de Carvalho. “We are keeping everyone in our prayers. We are hoping our donation will encourage other individuals and Reno County businesses to contribute.”

IdeaTek will also be suspending billing for customers directly impacted by the fires. The IdeaTek customer service team will reach out to each customer about the details.

The Reno County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) is there to help anyone impacted by this weekend's fire.

"I think the most important thing is for them to know they are not alone," said Lisa Gleason with VOAD. "This community is amazing. Certainly, the Reno County VOAD is made up of so many amazing organizations who are also going to be there for them. They are not alone. We can help them. Don't be afraid to reach out. I had someone say to me yesterday, we're not people who ask for things. It's okay this time, to ask for help, to ask for support."

In addition to the Multi-Agency Resource Center going on, the United Way office is also receiving hygiene items for the victims who lost everything.

"We're going to fill in gaps," Gleason said. "We know that some people have insurance and they're going to be well taken care of, but we also know that some people don't or don't have the support that they need. Our goal is to walk along side of those individuals who have experienced this loss and this trauma and see how we can match resources to their needs."

Most of all, though, if you have money to give, that's what they can use the most.

"United Way of Reno County is the fiscal agent for the Reno County VOAD," Gleason said. "You can go online to the United Way of Reno County's website, there's a big red donate thing right there when you get on to that. You can walk in to our office, which is at 924 North Main and drop off a check there as well."

Gleason said the need is greater than even it was five years ago after The Highlands fire, so they know they will continue to need monetary donations for an extended period. In that case, they were still assisting some victims even two years after the blaze.

VOAD there to help, 'don't be afraid to reach out'

Kan. — 
At last night’s South Hutchinson city council meeting, the agenda was amended to add an item to discuss the Scott Boulevard bridge project with Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain and consider a motion to approve the low bidder. 

The Council approved the low bid submitted by Mies Construction for $392,295.71. Unfortunately, this was significantly higher than the engineer’s estimate of $265,000.

After accounting for engineering costs and grant proceeds, the total cost for the project to South Hutchinson will be $268,755.71 barring any unforeseen change orders.

Based on the final estimates provided by PEC last year, South Hutchinson will save at least $275,000 before factoring increases in costs of goods, materials, and services. 

City Manager Joseph Turner believes the city is likely to have saved in excess of $400,000 as a direct result of the assistance provided by Mr. Brittain and Reno County. 

"On behalf of the South Hutchinson City Council and taxpayers, I would like to personally express my gratitude and appreciation for Mr. Brittain’s assistance and leadership on this project," Turner said.&nbsp;

The next step is for KDOT officials to accept and approve the bids. That should happen in a short period and then it will be up to the contractor to schedule the work. 

Once they start, the contract requires&nbsp;them to complete the project within 60 business days, barring any major weather delays.

South Hutchinson council approves Scott Blvd. bridge project

"The fire danger is extreme across Reno County," Weishaar said Tuesday. "Dry conditions, extreme temperature and fire danger will continue unabated until sufficient rainfall or snowfall occurs in Reno County. The snow that is forecasted this week will not be enough to prevent fire weather in coming weeks."

All three commissioners agreed with Weishaar's assessment. Chairman Daniel Friesen further clarified that he was told it was important that the whole county be under a ban.

"Chief Beer said that even lower risk areas of the county, if things get out of control, or even a minimal amount of resources are needed to be diverted in lower risk areas, it increases their responsibility and reduces the defensive positions that they take up during this time. I agree, it needs to be a county-wide effort."

It's not that commissioners are not sympathetic to the need for agricultural burning and the federal CRP restrictions, but the public risk is too high right now. Commissioner Ron Hirst is hoping that by the end of this declaration, that will change.

"If we get an opportunity towards the end of March, we want you to confer with us on that potential," Hirst said. "I know we were able to lift that last year to give them a few days of burning and there was a lof of pasture and CRP burning going on, but a lot of people didn't get that opportunity. I'm hopeful that USDA will accept this fact. It's in the safety of everyone that we don't allow that. If we see it available, I want you to be sure and let the commission know."

Frankly, Weishaar wants to wait for a lot of greening up before any restrictions are lifted, because dry grass does not stay wet after rain and snow nearly as long as new grass, which is why the limited precipitation we are likely to get may not be enough in the short term.

BUHLER — The Buhler Singers Variety Show is tonight, Tuesday, March 8, 7:00 p.m. at the Buhler High School Auditorium.

The Show, Motown &amp; Musicals, will feature Motown hits while special guest, the Crusader Singers, will perform music from Newsies!

Recent Down Seasons = Complacency?

2021 continued a trend in Kansas of lower than normal tornado counts. Compare to our 30-year average of&nbsp;86&nbsp;tornadoes reported annually, 2021 saw only 37, with&nbsp;only 19 during the normal severe weather season. October was a big month also, with 13 tornadoes reported. It’s rare for the fall season to have nearly as many tornadoes as the spring season.

The reason? Drought. Kansas has suffered from excessively-dry winters for several years, and that has translated into several odd spring seasons — 2019 saw extensive flooding in late May, the part of Kansas served by the Wichita NWS office went without a reported tornado for&nbsp;611 days —&nbsp;just over 20 months, and the total still ended up being just over half the average count of the last 10 years.

With the strongest tornado causing EF-2 damage in Haskell &amp; Gray counties on March 13th, the longest path length being under 13 miles (Haskell county, October 12), and only three tornado outbreak days last year many Kansans have not even been under a tornado warning in some time — months or years. We are concerned this is leading to complacency.

Prepare 2022: Tornado Safety

Reno County Commission Chair Daniel Friesen spoke to Hutch Post on Monday to thank those firefighters and other staff that worked so hard over the weekend and in the last few weeks to contain the Reno County wildfires.

"We just want to thank all of the emergency response personnel that have been involved in this effort," Friesen said. "Certainly, Adam Weishaar and his team at Emergency Management. He's got a small crew and it's amazing what he can bring to bear when there's an emergency situation. There was a laundry list of supportive personnel. Chief Beer and Chief Hanen with Hutch Fire. They are the best of the best, frankly in the nation. They have created a team that's been highly rated. We can't say thanks enough to the Hutchinson Fire Department. Sheriff Campbell and his men and women, risking their lives on the front line ahead of the fire, evacuating people. Certainly, the Reno County fire districts. There's just a long list of people and agencies. There's literally probably over 50 supportive agencies and its going to be hard to name everyone of them. Certainly, they have our thanks from the County Commission and all the people of Reno County and those impacted."

The County Commission has begun work to change policy on fire mitigation, but there's still more to be done.

"We've been very responsive," Friesen said. "We knew this was a very high danger coming in to spring. The unfortunate part is, we've set ourselves up over time for this. There's a range of challenges, from poor land management to just poor policy. There's no one entity or one person. It's a community wide challenge that we frankly have not done well enough yet. I think the fire chief has said the same thing, and I don't blame him for being sick of it. It's unfair for this community to keep sending firefighters and resources into extremely dangerous situations and then expect miracles to occur, which, they continue to happen for whatever reason. It's a miracle we have not lost a firefighter in all of this."

One civilian did die in the fire area this weekend.

"It's devastating that a person lost their life," Friesen said. "It's devastating that we lost almost 40 homes in this. It really is the definition of insanity to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I would expect the county commission to continue to increase its efforts on this issue. I would expect some immediate changes here tomorrow related to some things that the fire department has requested and emergency management has requested."

The county is still putting together details to hire a county fire administrator. No word on exactly when that hire might take place.

Friesen thanks personnel, looks ahead to policy changes

Kan. — Site Selection Magazine recently released its 2021 Governor’s Cup rankings, where Kansas tied for first with Texas. 

 This is the ninth year Site Selection has recognized the state with the most qualifying new and expanded facilities per capita.&nbsp;

Kansas was first for the first time ever for its capital investment activity in 2021.  As part of this ranking, Hutchinson tied for 27th as one of the top 100 performing “micropolitan” areas in the United States.

Kan. — Site Selection Magazine recently released its 2021 Governor’s Cup rankings, where Kansas tied for first with Texas. This is the ninth year Site Selection has recognized the state with the most qualifying new and expanded facilities per capita.&nbsp;Kansas was first for the first time ever for its capital investment activity in 2021. As part of this ranking, Hutchinson tied for 27th as one of the top 100 performing “micropolitan” areas in the United States. Hutchinson named top micropolitan area by Site Selection Magazine

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The United Way of Reno County and the Reno County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) will be hosting a Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) for those affected by the fires from this weekend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A MARC is a single location where disaster relief agencies come together to provide resources and assistance to meet the needs of those affected by a disaster. It will be held Tuesday, March 8, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Sunflower South Building on the fairgrounds.&nbsp;

This will provide one location for several disaster recovery agencies to connect with the fire victims. The center will serve as a meeting place for those affected to gain information, debrief, gain emotional and spiritual support as well. It will also provide clients with referrals and/or directions for additional off-site and ongoing services.&nbsp;

VOAD’s mission is to meet the need for ongoing coordination in Reno County providing volunteer, financial, spiritual, physical and/or psychological support for people whose lives have been affected by a disaster in our community. &nbsp;

Disaster relief center to operate at fairgrounds Tuesday

HUTCHINSON – The Youth Philanthropy Council of Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded $5,000 in grants at a ceremony Sunday at the Hutchinson Art Center.

Led by students from across Reno County, the Youth Philanthropy Council is a grantmaking program designed to involve area students in philanthropy: the practice of giving money, time and talents to help make life better for other people. This year’s group began meeting in November to discuss local issues of concern to youth, learn about grantmaking and award grants to youth-serving organizations.

The grants are awarded from the Richard W. Dillon Memorial Fund, established by the Dillon family to honor Dick Dillon for his extensive philanthropic work in the community.

The 14 members of the 2021-22 council are Andrew Auxier, Tanner Lindahl and Ava Waln, Buhler High School; Karly Combs, Fairfield High School; Travis Harper, Haven High School; Zion Burgess, Jayci Moriasi and Sadye Patterson, Hutchinson High School; Joseph Martinez, Nickerson High School; Copper Collins and Sophi England, Pretty Prairie High School; Laurissa Adelhardt, Anthony Clennan and Tanner Weathers, Trinity Catholic High School.

The following awards were given Sunday afternoon.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Inc., “Biggie Smalls,” $850:&nbsp;In this mentoring program, older student members of the club who meet at the Shadduck Park location will be matched with younger students at the Avenue A location. These pairs will do activities, share snacks and build relationships. At the end of the school year, they will choose a field trip celebration experience. Funds help support purchase of matching T-shirts, activity supplies, snacks and travel, and entrance fee costs for the celebration.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Inc., “To Infinity and Beyond,” $900:&nbsp;Funds will allow the club to purchase a 32-inch Infinity Game Table that will bring the fun of board games back to the youth. The electronic table stores over 40 favorite board games that youth can access and enjoy without the pieces to keep track of and boxes to store. Old favorites like Operation and Clue will make a comeback, and youth leaders envision developing leagues for various games, promoting good strategy, teamwork and sportsmanship in addition to fun.

BrightHouse Inc., “Safer, Smarter Kids,” $600:&nbsp;BrightHouse has been providing relationship safety training to high school-aged students for several years, and this grant will allow the organization to purchase developmentally appropriate curriculum for teaching younger students about healthy and safe friendships and relationships. BrightHouse's goal is to help youth recognize healthy and unhealthy relationships, help them build skills for responding to dangerous situations, and instill the understanding that they can seek help if involved in abusive relationships.

Buhler Public Library, “Lego Club at the Library,” $300:&nbsp;Buhler Public Library will begin offering a Lego Club, encouraging children to practice scientific and spatial reasoning skills along with building cooperation and problem-solving skills while facing the challenges of designing, constructing and communicating. Lego Club also gives children and families an added reason to visit the library, reminding them of their opportunity to read and check out books and other materials. Grant funds will support the purchase of Legos, base plates and character/structure-shaped Lego pieces.

Graber Elementary School, “Graber ‘GLOW’ Shop,” $400:&nbsp;Funds will be used to help the newly formed Graber Student Council begin an entrepreneurial project designed to engage students with real-life experiences while building meaningful connections and developing long-lasting skills to apply throughout life. The students, with support from the principal, counselor and sixth-grade teachers, will lead the decision-making process and plans regarding merchandise sold, how to allocate funds earned, etc.

Trinity Catholic High School Key Club, “No Sew Tie Blankets,” $630: Trinity High School's Key Club makes felt blankets to give away to community members who may be hospitalized, going through medical treatments or for new babies whose mothers are receiving services from Open Door Pregnancy Care Center. Youth not only make the blankets, but they also deliver them out into the community, practicing philanthropy throughout the entire process.

United Way of Reno County, “Reading Under the Lights,” $885:&nbsp;Summer reading is an important part of helping youth reach and surpass a third-grade reading level, which is an indicator of continued success in school and linked to high school graduation. Funds will support a free, family friendly, summer reading kickoff event targeting USD 308 children from age 5 through third grade. It will be an interactive event with dinner for all attendees, reading circles, celebrity readers, library card sign-up, a storybook walk and a free book for all students.

Wiley Elementary School, “Mini Sweet Treat,” $435:&nbsp;Mini Sweet Treat at Wiley aims for students to become young entrepreneurs. They work to sell healthy products and become fiscally responsible. The grant funds will allow for the purchase of a mini fridge, allowing students to sell items that must be kept cool. It will also cover the cost of a rolling cart large enough to display items for sale, so the younger, non-reading students at Wiley are able to view items and make purchase decisions.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, collaboration and innovative leadership to strengthen Reno County communities. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $92 million.

Kan. — Free COVID tests are being distributed at the SW Bricktown neighborhood center at Avenue A Elementary this week. 

The tests are available courtesy of the Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission.

The tests are given out Tuesday, and will be available Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Human Relations Commission hosts virtual event Tuesday

LYON COUNTY — A Hutchinson man was injured in a three-vehicle, fatality accident Sunday in Lyon County.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, a car driven by 31-year-old Nichole Gibbons of Wichita, along with her 11-year-old son, Terrell Gibbons of Topeka, were eastbound on Highway 50 at Road C. The car crossed the centerline and struck an SUV driven by 53-year-old James Morton of Dodge City. The Gibbons vehicle then hit a third car driven by 48-year-old Steven Miller of Hutchinson.

Gibbons and her son Terrell were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's department. Emporia/Lyon County EMS transported Miller to Newman Regional Hospital. Chase County EMS checked Morton and&nbsp; a passenger, 43-year-old Sheree Morton of Dodge City, for injuries. They refused medical treatment.&nbsp;

The accident happened just after 4 p.m. 10 miles west of Emporia.

RENO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Monday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Chevy passenger vehicle driven by Alejandro Harold Ramirez, 31, Wichita, was eastbound on Kansas 96 three miles east of Haven.

The Chevy rear-ended a 2018 Freightliner semi driven by Wayne David Dial, 39, Hutchinson, who had slowed to make a southbound turn on Worthington Road.

EMS transported Ramirez to Wesley Medical Center. Dial was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

One hospitalized after Reno County rear-end crash

HARVEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 6a.m. Monday in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Silverado driven by Lucille Nicole Burley, 42, Oklahoma City, was southbound on Interstate 135 just south of Lincoln Boulevard in Hesston.

The driver lost control and the pickup struck the bridge railing.

EMS transported Burley to Wesley Medical Center. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Woman hospitalized after pickup strikes bridge railing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer says the Cottonwood Complex fire is now about 70% contained.

Fire crews continue to work on approximately 12,000 acres that have been affected by fire. As of 8 a.m. Johnson County, The Kansas Forest Service and Hutchinson Fire Crews continue to work on cutting down burning trees and extinguishing them. The moisture did help a little with some hot spots but the burning trees are still a major problem, according to the latest release.

An assessment of the area shows that 35 homes were destroyed in the fire along with 92 outbuildings and 110 vehicles. Crews did find the body of a missing person from the fire. That part of the investigation has been turned over to the Reno County Sheriff’s Department.

Donations of snacks, water and Gatorade are still being taken at the command center at 3201 East 4th Avenue. They ask that you do not bring food to the center as that is already being provided.

More than 100 structures destroyed in fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan.- The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to the 2400 Block of Apple Lane for the report of a building fire just after 8 p.m. Sunday evening.&nbsp;

First arriving crews found a single-story residence with smoke showing from the back of the home. Upon entry fire was discovered in the kitchen and was quickly extinguished.

The occupants were home at the time of call and were able to get to safety. No injuries were reported throughout the incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.&nbsp;

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board will take the first steps on getting a potential contractor for the proposed bond issue.

The district is looking at a $10.5 million facilities improvement project. During tonight’s meeting the board will seek approval to put out requests for proposals to contractors who would become the district's construction management at risk.&nbsp;

The system uses the contractor to conduct all contracting, construction and financial facets of a project. It is the same format used during the renovation of the sports arena and the USD 308 bond project. If all goes as planned the formal hearing will be held on the matter April 4th.

Tonight's Nickerson USD 309 board meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th.

USD 309 board to go over construction management at risk for bond project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works wants to remind motorists that&nbsp; W. 5th Ave. is now closed at the Harsha Canal Bridge for an extended period of time so that repairs can be made to the bridge.

The street is closed between Van Buren and Whiteside Streets except to local traffic. Motorists can detour from 5th by going over to W 4th Avenue from either Hendricks or Van Buren.&nbsp;

The closure is expected to last three months.&nbsp;

West 5th Ave. now closed in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The trial for a Hutchinson man facing first degree murder charges has been continued following a motion hearing Friday in Reno County District Court..

The trial for Sandral Wade was scheduled to start March 22. The motion for the delay was granted and the new trial date is June 27.

Wade is accused in the shooting death of Orlando Gipson.in April of 2020. He also faces one count of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Landre Bowie. Wade was bound over the trial following a preliminary hearing in August of last year.

Murder trial moved to June

Kan. — Jason Younger with Hutchinson Daylight Donuts announced Monday that their Main Street location will reopen March 22.

"We just really wanted to completely remodel the shop," Younger said. "Instead of a little scrubbing and a little painting, we did a full remodel. Got some new equipment and equipment takes a while to get right now. A little later than we hoped to open, but this will get us past spring break, we'll have a full staff and we'll be ready to go with the new equipment. Main Street Daylight Donuts will be very similar to 30th Street Daylight Donuts in that, now we'll be able to produce more donuts here at 305 North Main. We'll be able to produce a better selection. It's going to be just a great experience down here now. We're excited about it."

They had to do some hiring to staff the new location.

"We have really low turnover," Younger said. "That's maybe because we're serving donuts every morning. I think if you go to any job and they are serving donuts every morning that probably helps. Great staff has been in place for quite a while. We did hire more. I think we added four or five new people for the Main Street Daylight. They've already been employed by us. They've been training and getting up to speed. Part of it will be splitting our staff into two teams, plus the additional staff. That will really give us a nice, full staff at both locations."

"Honestly, any time you put the donut in a box and transport it, it just loses that freshness." Younger said. "We wanted them to come out hot and fresh made from scratch every day. We went with two full kitchens that can really handle high production and make sure we're cranking out high quality donuts in both locations."

The hours will vary between the locations.

"305 North Main will be open Tuesday through Saturday 5 a.m. to Noon," Younger said. "We are going to be closed down here, just so that half of our staff has a Sunday off. Then we can kind of rotate our staff and give people an opportunity to have a Sunday off. Monday is the slowest day of the week and so, I think the one store can handle the Monday traffic. Up on 30th, we'll remain open seven days a week."
