HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Flag Theatre will hold auditions for "We Will Remember: A Tribute to Veterans." The script calls for five young people who can be relatable to eighth graders and several adults. Auditions will be today and Sunday, May 1, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The story explores the lives and sacrifices veterans have made throughout the history of the United States. Focus will be on the stories of Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, and the Middle East (Desert Storm) veterans. These characters will represent the thousands who have served our country and people.

The show will be directed by Robert Garrett, a veteran who served in the Navy in the submarine fleet, and Aaron Parker, who was a member of the military police and K-9 corps.

The BrightHouse mission is “Lighting the
way to end abuse,” and that slogan will be brought to life with the
first ever Lighting the Way 5K Glow Run to support assistance
and shelter through BrightHouse.

Strataca offered
to partner with BrightHouse to create a fundraising event, and the
slogan made a Glow Run the perfect choice. This is a cross country
style run (or walk) 650’ below the earth’s surface in the salt
mine with only glow sticks and a flash light to light the way.
Participants will need to wear a helmet and bring a light. Every
participant will receive a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt, BIB and glow
stick. The first 200 runners are guaranteed a glowing medal.

The run will take
place Sunday morning, May 22. Entry fees are $45. There is also a
sponsorship program available if you can’t participate but would
like to sponsor a BrightHouse support group member. BrightHouse
provides confidential, free, non-judgmental support 24/7 to victims
of domestic or sexual abuse.

The Hutchinson Police Department is hosting a site for the Drug Take Back Event on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

"We've been doing this now since 2010," said Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt. "We've collected and safely destroyed an enormous number of 100 tons in Kansas alone of unwanted drugs and unneeded medicines."

You can bring your unwanted prescription drugs to the Law Enforcement Center at 210 W 1st Hutchinson, KS.

The department is able to collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. 

Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

Drug take back today at HPD

Sunday is a special event at Gowans Stadium for Kindergarten through 3rd grade kids called United We Read.

"We know that by third grade, if a child is not reading at grade level, they are more likely not to graduate high school," said Denice Gilliland with the United Way. "The United Way has done the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which gets books into children's hands 0-5 for the last seven years. This is just a continuation to get books in the hands of kids right before summer."

The Hutchinson Public Library will have free library cards available and information on their summer reading program as well as a StoryWalk at the stadium.

"It was created by the Boston Children's Museum," said Darcie Canfield-Riggs with the Hutchinson Public Library. "It's where you take a book and you essentially tear it apart and you put it on a sign or some kind of a stable thing, that people can take a walk and read a story page by page as they are going along. Our children's outreach coordinator, Amy Johnson, she's worked really hard to offer StoryWalks around our community for the last few years. We just are wrapping up one at Dillon Nature Center. We're excited to offer a book that families can walk around the track at Gowans this Sunday and read, Inky's Great Escape, about an octopus."

There will be free books for children kindergarten to 3rd Grade, thanks to funds from the United Way.

"Picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, non-fiction books, we're handing them out at this event," Canfield-Riggs said. "I think we've got about 1,400 books or so that we're going to be giving out this Sunday."

The event is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. If the weather is bad, it will move indoors to the Salthawk Activity Center.

A Hutchinson man is accused of rape and kidnapping and will have his next court appearance next week.

51-year-old Tyrone Eugene Carter had his initial appearance before judge Daniel Gilligan Friday. 

Carter is accused of holding a 15-year-old runaway from Wichita against her will, drugging her and having sex with her.

He was booked into jail just after 2 p.m. Thursday and is being held on $175,000 bond.

Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann is continuing to sound the alarm about what he is calling the farm-killer tax in the Biden administration's proposed 2023 budget.

"Buried in it is this provision that basically is a one-time capital gains tax on unrealized gains," Mann said. "Basically, an asset, think farmland or a small business, in the year 2030, would there be a capital gains tax applied to it."

This is one of the provisions that was in the administration's Build Back Better agenda that didn't even have support in the House, but Mann still sought support from House Agriculture Committee Republican Leader Glenn "GT" Thompson (PA-15), and U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03), Ranking Member on House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, just to make sure it doesn't get legs this time around.

"This would be devastating for our family farms," Mann said. "We have so many generational family farms, land that's been in family farms for well over 90 years. It's just a few sentences buried in the budget. We've introduced legislation about this, we've sent letters. We're really raising the profile of this."

The letter tells the administration that landowners would be required to produce property appraisal information from the 1940s and conduct new appraisals to find their current property value to determine their tax liability to the federal government.

Wichita, Kansas — The YMCA of Hutchinson &amp; Reno County and the Greater Wichita YMCA Boards of Directors approved a plan to bring the associations together to foster greater investment in Hutchinson to strengthen kids, residents’ physical and emotional health and the community’s overall well-being.

A management agreement in place since last November allowed both groups to identify efficiencies and explore how to meet community needs and further grow the Y’s mission in Hutchinson. The decision to bring YMCA of Hutchinson &amp; Reno County into the Greater Wichita YMCA family came after extensive conversations with local members and community partners.&nbsp;

“It was extremely important for us to do our due diligence and speak with individuals and businesses that are passionate about furthering the YMCA of Hutchinson &amp; Reno County’s 146-year legacy and increasing impact,” said Will Lewis, Chair of the YMCA of Hutchinson &amp; Reno County Board of Directors. “The response was positive for our two associations to work side-by-side for the greater good of our communities so that we can efficiently serve even more in the Hutchinson area with expanded mission-focused programming and membership options.”

The Y’s mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that promote healthy lifestyles, strong families, and positive youth development to build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, regardless of ability to pay. The shared footprint being created is grounded by the proud histories of both organizations as well as by a longstanding collaborative relationship.&nbsp;

“When we talk about community at the Y, it’s about much more than facilities and exercise or sports schedules. It’s about giving every child, teen, adult and older adult a welcoming and enriching space where they can heal, calm and restore their mind, body and spirit and connect with the good in themselves and others,” said Randy Carlgren, Chair of Greater Wichita YMCA Board of Directors. “The need for YMCA services in the areas surrounding Hutchinson and Wichita has never been greater. The joining of our associations will increase our power to meet our common goals to nurture the potential of kids, promote healthy living and foster a sense of social responsibility.”

A transition period will take place over the next several months. The Greater Wichita YMCA currently operates 10 branches in Wichita, Andover, Newton and El Dorado. The YMCA of Hutchinson &amp; Reno County is located at 716 E. 13th Avenue.

Hutchinson YMCA now a part of the Wichita association

Reno County Commissioner Ron Hirst notes that anytime KDOT does a large project like the northwest bypass by Nickerson, some of the mileage that used to be highway goes back to the county and that does leave behind potential long-term issues on those miles.

"We're going to get about 10 or 12 miles back, plus another bridge over the Arkansas River," Hirst said. "Bridges are a couple million dollars today. I don't know what they will be 15 years down the line. Same way with the mileage we've got west of Nickerson, K-96 down to Arlington. Those all came back to us with responsibilities for all the bridge and all the culverts and the construction underneath of them."

The City of Hutchinson is having to deal with the bridges that KDOT used to be responsible for on the Woodie Seat Freeway and even though it's important to have projects like the bypass, it's those long-term passed along expenses that are one of the things future county commissions are going to have to be concerned about.

"It's a cost that's going to come out in years future," Hirst said. "It probably won't be my concern, it will be those who are still here at that point in time."

As long-term strategic planning is done by the county, it's important to keep in mind that starting next year, there will be three new commissioners on the board. The direction the body might take is unclear, depending on who is elected this fall.

"It takes about a year, six months to a year before you even become real comfortable being a commissioner, based upon my experience and from what I've talked to other people also," Hirst said. "You still continue your planning process, those items that come up in January will be all looked at."

There is still one commission seat that as of earlier this week did not have any applicants. The filing deadline for commission seats is June 1.

Hirst: Returned lane-miles will be long-term concern

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After nearly two decades, championship dirt track auto racing is returning to the famed half-mile oval at the Kansas State Fair on Sunday, Sept. 18, with the smashing fun of the Demolition Derby hitting the track earlier in the week.

South winds 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected in Saline, McPherson, Reno, Kingman and Harper Counties.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

Wind Advisory Friday afternoon and evening

LINDSBORG, Kan. (AP) — Police in the central Kansas town of Lindsborg announced two boys are suspected of being involved in the contamination of a water cooler used by the Kansas Wesleyan baseball team during a doubleheader at Bethany College last weekend. 

Both schools contacted police to file a report about a foreign substance found in Kansas Wesleyan’s water. Police did not say how it connected the juveniles to the tainted water and said no one associated with either college was responsible for tampering with the water cooler. 

The substance mixed into the water was paint used to put lines on the field.

PRATT COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged sex crimes.

Following an investigation conducted by the Pratt Police Department, Wichita Police and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested 19-year-old Kristopher Vanzandt, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

 Multiple search warrants were executed because of the investigation and resulted in the seizure of computer equipment and documentation.

&nbsp;Vanzandt is being held on a $500,000 bond on suspicion of aggravated trafficking of child pornography through the internet and unlawful possession of child pornography, according to the release.

Sheriff: Kan. man held on $500K bond for alleged sex crimes

OTTAWA, Kan. — A Newton man was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Franklin County early Thursday morning.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that 31-year-old Bryce Crump of Newton was going south on US-59 when he was hit by a northbound SUV driven by 18-year-old Weston Johnson of Garnett. Reports show Johnson's vehicle crossed the centerline of US-59 and hit Crump’s car. Crump was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was taken by EMS to Overland Park Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

The accident happened around 4:45 a.m. one mile south of Princeton, or about nine miles south of Ottawa.

Newton man killed in crash near Ottawa

Kan. — 
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt anticipates the oral arguments before the Kansas Supreme Court regarding the Congressional redistricting map to happen next month.

"I expect we're probably going to make that argument on May 16," Schmidt said Thursday. "It appears to be the date everyone's coalescing around. We'll go from there and see what the court says and either validate these maps or it will be back in the legislature's court to try again."

The objection of those suing is that the equal protection clauses in the state constitution are violated and it dilutes their votes.

"From a population standpoint, it is legally satisfactory, no problems," Schmidt said. "There are folks who object to it. They object mainly because of the way the lines were drawn in Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Kansas and Douglas County, around Lawrence. They've gone to court and filed lawsuits. They didn't file federal lawsuits, which is the normal manner of challenging these federal district maps. Instead, for the first time in state history, they filed state lawsuits under state law theory in state court."

Even the judge who decided the litigants case had merit at the district court level acknowledges that the state Supreme Court is where the final decision will lie.

"Everybody knew that's where this was going to get settled, ultimately," Schmidt said. "The court is now in the process of setting up procedure for us to brief the argument and make the argument."

The lower court held that the legislature didn't follow its own criteria in drawing the map. It also said they didn't necessarily have to have criteria, but once they told people what it was, it was on them to follow it.

Fairfield Middle School hosting STEAM camp

CHICAGO. — Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) today announced that John Stott will serve as the new president for ADM Investor Services, Inc. (ADMIS), effective July 1, 2022. He replaces Tom Kadlec, who announced his retirement after nearly 32 years with ADM.

HutchCC Athletic Director Josh Gooch is pleased with how the annual Blue Dragon golf tournament fundraiser is coming together.

"Tyler at Carey Park, him and his staff do an absolutely wonderful job of being welcoming, putting all the fine details on to put on a first-class event," Gooch said.

The tournament will be Friday, May 6, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Gooch is glad to be closer to normal than it was during COVID.

"It's just another thing that we get to do," Gooch said. "We get to touch the community. Our spirit squad will be out there at the tournament, with Duke the Dragon with a chance to get your picture taken. It gives us an opportunity to just put on a first-class event."

It's important for the recruiting efforts of HutchCC that they are able to recruit well beyond just central Kansas.

"All the money that we collect goes into our HutchCC athletic endowment," Gooch said. "It pays for scholarships. It pays for opportunities for student athletes to come and pay for their tuition and books, fees, housing, room and board and events like this is what has elevated Hutchinson Community College athletically and provides us opportunities to recruit top-notch student athletes from across the country."

Blue Dragon Golf Tournament coming May 6

YODER, Kan. — In 2019, KLETC recognized the evolving demands placed on the public safety community and began a major overhaul of the basic training curriculum, which had been in place since 2001.&nbsp; 

KLETC’s curriculum development team compared its original curriculum and job task analysis surveys to those in other states, incorporated best practices from the DOJ, PERF, and other sources, and engaged KLETC’s cadre of instructors and subject matter experts from around the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The culmination of this research has led KLETC to create a competency-based basic training curriculum delivered by subject matter experts as learning facilitators rather than lecturers.  </figure>YODER, Kan. — In 2019, KLETC recognized the evolving demands placed on the public safety community and began a major overhaul of the basic training curriculum, which had been in place since 2001.&nbsp; KLETC’s curriculum development team compared its original curriculum and job task analysis surveys to those in other states, incorporated best practices from the DOJ, PERF, and other sources, and engaged KLETC’s cadre of instructors and subject matter experts from around the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;The culmination of this research has led KLETC to create a competency-based basic training curriculum delivered by subject matter experts as learning facilitators rather than lecturers. Master plan continues for Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Due to popular demand the Cosmosphere has opened another session of Starship Earth. For kids entering grades 6-7, the additional Starship Earth session will run from July 18-22.

Students will learn about the Earth on fun field trips; prepare to survive in a habitat they create in space and spend one night at the Cosmosphere!

For kids entering grades 8-11: There are still a few spots in Cosmosphere’s June or July sessions of Moon Shot, Astro Lab and Lunar Trek camps. Those camps feature team building, coding, flying drones, an outdoor challenge course and of course, space exploration!

Cosmosphere adding a second 6th and 7th grade summer camp

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Incoming Superintendent for USD 308 Dr. dawn Johnson took time to visit the kindergarten classes at Wiley Elementary School this week.&nbsp; 

She taught the classes about her job as a Colonel in the Army and what she will be doing next year as the district's new superintendent.

HESSTON, Kan. — At its April 25 meeting, the Hesston USD 460 board of education voted unanimously to approve a contract to Kevin Logan as the district's next superintendent.&nbsp; Logan will take the reins on July 1, 2022, following the departure of Ben Proctor, who has accepted a position with the Kansas State Department of Education, in Topeka.

At its April 25 meeting, the Hesston USD 460 board of education voted unanimously to approve a contract to Kevin Logan as the district's next superintendent.&nbsp; Logan will take the reins on July 1, 2022, following the departure of Ben Proctor, who has accepted a position with the Kansas State Department of Education, in Topeka.

Logan has broad educational experience as a teacher, principal, and superintendent.&nbsp; He is currently serving as superintendent of Rock Creek USD 323 where he oversees two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school, with a budget of more than $22 million.&nbsp; Under his leadership at USD 323, the district completed a $30.6 million bond project and a successful KESA Accreditation Cycle, and implemented a universal Pre-K model.

Regarding his selection, Logan said, "It is my honor to be selected as the next superintendent of USD 460.&nbsp; Hesston Schools have a long history of excellence in all facets of education.&nbsp; From my earlier experience as a teacher in Hesston, I have witnessed how proud the community is of its students, teachers, and schools.&nbsp; I look forward to working with all stakeholders; and together we will strive to reach the USD 460 Vision."

Board president Layne Frick says that Kevin Logan emerged from a very thorough search process as the right candidate to lead USD 460.&nbsp; "The Board is confident in our choice of Kevin Logan and certain that under his leadership, USD 460 will continue to be recognized as a top school district in the State."
