HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The investigation continues into the derailment of Amtrak’s Southwest Chief in Missouri Monday afternoon.

The eastbound train left the tracks after striking a dump truck at a rural crossing near Mendon, Missouri. The impact killed the truck driver and two passengers on the train.

Passengers who were traveling onboard the eastbound “Chief”, which departed L.A. on Sunday and arrived in Hutchinson Tuesday morning, are being accommodated as quickly as possible on other trains or buses as available.

The westbound Southwest scheduled to depart Chicago Tuesday afternoon, will now originate at Kansas City. That means any passengers in Newton and Hutchinson going west will still have service Wednesday morning. No word on how the next eastbound train will be handled once it gets to Kansas City Wednesday morning, but it will make a stop in Hutchinson as usual.

For more information passengers can call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
