Staffer for Kansas U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, Katie Sawyer of Inman has been announced as the Lt. Governor nominee to run with Republican Derek Schmidt in 2022.

<a href="https://schmidtforkansas.com/meet-katie/">According to Schmidt's campaign website</a>, Sawyer is a fifth-generation Kansan and, along with her husband, a fourth-generation owner and operator of their family farm in McPherson County.

They manage the diversified crop operation, commercial cow herd, and Sawyer Family Angus. Under their leadership the operation has grown to include additional crop acres, cattle facilities, and pasture ground.

The 38-year-old is both a working mom and a conservative Republican woman. Sawyer was a journalist and editor of the McPherson Sentinel prior to working for Marshall.

Inman woman announced as running mate for Derek Schmidt

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners gave approval to a revised schedule for Rcat as part of its consent agenda during Tuesday’s meeting.

As of June 3, Rcat will have five bus driver positions vacant and has had openings since November. Since that time, only six applications have been turned in with only one person hired. Because of that, Rcat will reduce its schedule. The temporary change in operating hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Demand Response will operate exclusively on Saturday with no fixed routes until they are able to hire more drivers. The changes begin July 1.&nbsp;

Currently, Rcat operates 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and operates three Fixed Routes and Paratransit on Saturday. Rcat says it is working to develop new recruitment tactics to attract applicants. Rcat Director Barb Lilyhorn says she expects the driver shortage to last several months in a best-case scenario.&nbsp;

Rcat to reduce schedule due to driver shortage

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salvation Army is holding a donut eating contest Saturday in Hutchinson. 

Donuts are a Salvation Army tradition that goes back to when ladies were sent over to make sweet treats for the troops in World War I.

The event is a fundraiser for Salvation Army camps and for the international work of the Salvation Army.

The event itself will happen at the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 200 South Main Saturday morning at 10 a.m. 

There will be little red kettles in front of each competitor that morning, or you can donate online at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/tsahutchinson">their Facebook page</a>. They will also be streaming the event live there, if you can't make it out on Saturday.

Reminder: Salvation Army Donut Day event is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday morning in Reno County District Court for a Hutchinson man facing two counts of first-degree murder.

Kyle Hardwick is accused in the deaths of 58-year-old Philip Anstine and 56-year-old Marion Bates in August of 2021.

Hardwick was arrested in Maize Sept. 1 after being listed as a person of interest when Bates and Anstine’s bodies were discovered on a property in eastern Reno County.

Thursday’s hearing begins at 9:30 a.m. in front of Judge Joe McCarville.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Horizons Mental Health Center CEO Mike Garrett is retiring. His last day will be June 30. Garrett has devoted his career to the treatment of behavioral and mental health issues.&nbsp;

Garrett has been with Horizons Mental Health Center for 41 years, serving as its CEO since 2007.&nbsp;

Garrett currently oversees 210 employees that make up Horizons including offices in Hutchinson, Kingman, Pratt, Anthony and Medicine Lodge.&nbsp;

A retirement reception is planned for Thursday, June 2, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Trade Center at 1601 N. Lorraine Street.&nbsp;

Horizons CEO to retire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced it will be making needed updates to the traffic lights at East 4th Avenue and Halstead.&nbsp;

This will involve the removal of one of the mast arms holding the traffic lights. While this work is being done, the power to the intersection will be off and controlled with a 4-way stop.&nbsp;

Normal traffic flow should only be interrupted for brief times while the mast arm is being moved. Weather permitting, the intersection should be back to normal by the end of the day Friday.

4th and Halstead traffic lights will be off starting Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair announced Tuesday that the Gavin DeGraw concert has been canceled.

DeGraw was to perform on Friday, Sept. 16. The fair says the cancellation was due to an unavoidable scheduling conflict.&nbsp;

Officials with the fair expect to announce a new act for this date shortly. Current ticket holders for the concert are asked to check their email or call the Kansas State Fair ticket office for more information on how to handle those purchases.

Area pools closed until at least Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners put the brakes on doing more structural work on the courthouse until they get more answers on a $700,000 change order put before them during Tuesday's meeting.

The contractor and engineers are requesting that the county spend the extra funds to replace anchors to the stone fascia at the bottom of the dome that have corroded over the years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The engineers and architects are concerned that if we have more earthquakes that could cause a collapse of the stones,” County Administrator Randy Partington said. “They have recommended a $700,000 thousand anchoring change order. We’ve talked with the architect and engineer, and they're recommending that we do something.”

In the end, the commission decided they wanted more answers as to how the stonework would be anchored and how much if any insurance would be willing to pay, which at the moment appears to be a sticking point. Commissioner Ron Sellers voiced his objections to the change order.

“Personally I think we need to get Pishny (the contractor on the project) done with what we’ve given them to do and I don’t see this as an emergency,” Sellers said. “We ought to look long and hard before we spend any additional money on this at this point in time.”

An engineering group WJE , which specializes in engineering in earthquake-prone California, was brought in to look over the stonework and said that the building held up well from two four-plus magnitude earthquakes and stated that the additional anchors would not be necessary. Partington said they have asked engineers if the stones can be tied directly to the concrete base being installed at the base of the dome which would save the county considerably. The commissioners were in consensus that if that solution works, they would readdress the change order then.

Even though the Kansas Legislature passed the so-called APEX bill and it was signed by Governor Laura Kelly in February, we still don't know if the state will get the super secret project.

"I don't know if we've lost out completely, or if they are still in the courting process," said Rep. Jason Probst. "The way these economic, especially these big economic development deals can sometimes work is, they've got two or three suitors on the line and they're trying to see who gives them the sweetest deal or the biggest dowry. It seems that's what the case is here. They came to Kansas, they got us to put a lot of money on the table. Then, from everything I've read, they've gone down to Oklahoma to see if they could get a sweeter deal down there."

Neither Oklahoma or Kansas is authorized to say who the project is for, but speculation is that it would be for a Panasonic battery plant for electric vehicles. Panasonic is a supplier for Tesla. Whichever state wins the plant would likely see it start producing as soon as fiscal 2024. 

Panasonic already jointly operates a battery plant with Tesla in Nevada.

Jace Chambers with the Hutchinson Art Center is excited about getting back a normal summer offering.

"We are actually able to have our Summer Art Camp again in person at the Art Center," Chambers said. "That's coming up in July for two weeks, Monday through Friday."

The camp is July 11 to 15 and 18 to 22 for 1st through 6th graders.

"There will be ten unique projects, a new one for each day," Chambers said. "If you go to our website, where our classes are listed, you can actually find that lesson plan and pick and choose the days you want or take them all, which I highly recommend."

1st through 3rd Graders meet from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with 4th through 6th graders meeting from 11 a.m. to noon. The class costs $5 per day per child to defray materials expenses.

HAVILAND — Barclay College in Haviland announced that it will offer a nursing degree completion program where a Registered Nurse (R.N.) can progress to a Bachelors of Science (B.S.N.) in Nursing. The program will be offered through Barclay College Online.

The program is designed around high-quality professional nursing courses, taught by a faculty with over 34 years of combined nursing education experience. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (H.L.C.).

The program can be completed on a part-time basis, or a full-time basis in as little as three semesters, culminating in a clinical practicum course synthesizing faith and professional nursing practice competencies. The City of Hutchinson has some reminders regarding lawn care as the wet weather will prompt grass to grow. 

Tall grass isn't a code violation until the majority of it on a property is more than a foot tall. Also, when you do mow, blow clippings back into your lawn, not into the street. 

Grass clippings on roadways create danger for motorcyclists and damage equipment before making their way to gutters, drains, ditches and eventually waterways.

The Hospice and Homecare of Reno County Festival of Remembrance is coming up in August.

"It will be held on Friday evening, August 19 at Prairie Dunes," said Fundraising and Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah Diamond. "It will be an evening of fun, food and lively auctions. In addition to our silent and live auctions, we'll have a raffle and have the opportunity to win a car donated by Mel Hambleton Ford in Wichita. This is actually Mel Hambelton's 12th year of donating a car for our raffle. We couldn't be more excited to unveil our giveaway car, which we'll be doing very soon."

You can purchase tickets to win the car or other raffle prizes, or you can be a part of providing items for the auction.

"We're always looking for new sponsors," Diamond said. "If you're interested, whether individually or as a business or your organization, we're always looking for new sponsors. If you'd like to make a monetary donation toward a trip or other item or maybe you have an item you'd like to donate to our live or silent auction, we welcome that, as well."

The group is also always looking for people to help, whatever your skills.

"We're always looking for volunteers, with animal therapy, hairdressers, veterans, the commitment can really be as much or as little as you can," Diamond said. "We have regular volunteers that might volunteer one or two days a week or one day a month, or ones that are more one time or episodic."

Volunteers do go through a screening process for the safety of patients, but if you'd like to learn more, just call Hospice and Homecare of Reno County at 620-665-2473.

Festival of Remembrance coming in August

A Democrat has filed for the Reno County Commission District 4 seat.

Michael Jobe pastors at Living Hope Freewill Baptist Church, serves as a volunteer chaplain at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, and fills multiple roles at the Hutchinson NAACP, including presiding as Chairman for the NAACP Religious Affairs.

Jobe and his family own Aleesa Soaps in downtown Hutchinson.

“I believe in community service and I believe in giving," Jobe said in a release. "This community has given me so much in the 26 years I’ve lived here, and it’s time for me to give something back to it. I can do that by working with our County and our City to help lower our poverty levels and put in place programs that support businesses, families and our children.”

Jobe is the first Democrat to file in any of the County Commission districts. The deadline to file is noon on Wednesday.

Bogey's in Hutchinson is going to do what it can in the month of June to help those that are struggling, even though their own costs have gone up.

Tyler Davis said they do have to raise prices on some things, as their food cost last month was at 50%, but their intent is to keep kids meal prices the same for as long as they can. 

Also, on Mondays in June from 5 p.m. to close, kids meals will be half price. 

Also on Mondays in June, there will be a pay what you can meal for adults after 5 p.m. A cheeseburger, fry and drink for whatever the person can afford. If people want to help Bogey's defray the cost, they will offer gift cards that you can put as much as you'd like on to to pay for other's meals.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON — The South Hutchinson Fire Department is holding a pancake breakfast fundraiser, Sunday June 5 from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.&nbsp; at the fire station at 20 East Blanchard.

The purpose is to raise funds for the purchase of coats for firefighters and a thermal imaging camera to place inside of the brush truck.

The department says this camera will give the driver the ability to see through smoke for any dangers on the road and also see the layout of the land beyond the headlights in rough terrain.

HAVEN — The Haven USD 312 summer food service program will begin Tuesday, May 31st.  

The district will be handing out sack lunches at Haven Grade School, Yoder Charter School and the Mt. Hope Swimming Pool from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

On Thursdays, two breakfasts and two lunches per child will be handed out to account for Friday.

It is best, especially on Thursdays, to bring a backpack or wagon to transport the additional meals.

The program will run until July 29th.  There will be no meals July 4th and 5th.

USD 312 summer meal program starts Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters were able to put out a fire at 416 East 5th Monday afternoon.

They took the call at 1:12 p.m. and found a house with smoke coming from the eaves.

They found high heat and heavy smoke when they entered, but were able to find the fire and extinguish it. No one was hurt and the investigation continues.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will have to decide what to do with the courthouse repairs when they meet on Tuesday and more details have been revealed as to the difference of opinion with regard to the reinforcement of the veneer on to the courthouse dome.

Simply put, the earthquakes Hutchinson had that caused the insurance claim didn't do enough damage to require reinforcement of the veneer, as a matter of code compliance, according to the insurance company's engineer. 

Local engineer Brent Engelland told the county in an email, "Our take on it is that we do not feel like we can, in good conscious, leave things unconnected that were intended to be connected. Veneer blocks that were intended to be connected in the original design/construction, and no longer are, should be connected again."

With that said, since the insurance isn't going to pay for it, Engelland understands that the county may choose not to.

"Since we have been heavily involved in this process from the beginning, we need to make sure that we are protected from any future legal action if there are performance or safety issues with the veneer," Engelland said in his email.

He also made clear that those comments were in no way intended to be confrontational, he just wants everything on the record so that future governing bodies can make informed decisions if future seismic activity were to occur above and beyond what anybody expects right now, as it will be those commissioners job at that time to deal with their fiduciary responsibility to the county.

This is in addition to the repairs that need to be made to the slab, which the county has already agreed to have done, whether or not insurance would have covered it. 

The Board of County Commissioners meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Department of Aging announced Friday that the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) will provide qualified low-income Kansas seniors with their annual program. The program provides checks to purchase fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables and honey at farmers markets in selected counties throughout the state.

The Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) is providing low-income seniors who meet age and income requirements with $35 in checks to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from authorized farmers at local participating farmers markets through November 1, 2022. Checks are available in $5 increments.

To be eligible to receive KSFMNP checks, a senior must be 60 years old or older, or at least 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization on the day the money is issued. And a senior’s annual gross household income must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. For example, a household of one must have an annual gross income at or below $25,142, or a monthly gross income at or below $2,096.

The program’s application process in Reno County will again be conducted by telephone only. No walk-ins will be accepted. The application period begins June 14. To apply, call 620-694–2911 between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Farmers Market senior program offered again this year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, based in Hutchinson, is hosting virtual Mental Health First Aid training classes in August, September and October.

This training is limited to Kansas organizations and residents, as well as churches in the Great Plains UM Conference.

Those who want to train will need to register at least one week before the training date. Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

This training consists of 2 hours of self-paced pre-work and a 6.5 hour live virtual training (with breaks).

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is a proven and effective resource that teaches lay people how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in their community. In this one-day, 6.5-hour online training, participants will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and substance use concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. The training helps anyone who wants to learn how to provide initial help to someone who may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness or crisis, and provides tools to help friends, family members, colleagues, and others in the community.

Additionally, MHFA teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and can use their strengths to stay well. Trainees also learn how to apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in a variety of situations, then practice through role play, scenarios, and activities — making it easier to apply these skills in a real-life situation.

We are offering these virtual sessions at no cost to Kansans. Each person should register individually, even if multiple people from one organization are attending.

Nearly one in five Americans has a mental illness or substance use disorder, yet many are reluctant to seek help or simply don’t know where to turn for care.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County government agencies and non-profit organizations are invited to join Hutchinson Public Library in telling stories through quilt blocks that celebrate the community’s diversity, spirit, and pride, and recognize the support services available to Reno County residents.

The quilt, when finished, will be housed in the Reno County Museum.

Participants will design a quilt square and tell the story of your organization and your process of making the quilt square. No quilting experience is necessary. Makerspace staff will facilitate matching quilters with organizations.

The library would like to see traditional quilting methods as well as non-traditional mixed media designs like electronic textiles, painting, 3D printing, and other art forms. The library will recommend materials and the Makerspace staff will be available to let people know what can be done. You can register online or stop by the Makerspace to register between now and July 31.

A volunteer team will help assemble the quilt squares, sew them all together, and quilt.

When the quilt is complete, there will be a celebration to unveil it and a traveling display to be shared among the participants during 2023.

The ranks of Vietnam and Korean War veterans each dropped by more than 1.5 million over that span, while the decline for World War II veterans totaled more than 2 million. These declines have reduced the overall population of veterans even as the number of veterans from the Gulf War and Post-9/11 wars has grown.

World War II veterans totaled around 500,000 in the U.S. in 2020, and the Census Bureau estimates that by 2030, only 8,000 WWII veterans will remain. These veterans live in every state in the U.S., but large states like California (53,807), Florida (48,220), and New York (31,730) have the largest total counts of WWII veterans. But as a share of the over-85 population, many smaller states have higher proportions of World War II veterans, with as many as 10% of their oldest citizens having served in the war.

The data used in this analysis is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s&nbsp;2020 American Community Survey. To determine the states with the most World War II veterans, researchers at Porch calculated the World War II veteran share of the 85-and-over population. In the event of a tie, the state with the greater World War II veteran share of the total veteran population was ranked higher.

These veterans live in every state in the U.S., but large states like California (53,807), Florida (48,220), and New York (31,730) have the largest total counts of WWII veterans. But as a share of the over-85 population, many smaller states have higher proportions of World War II veterans, with as many as 10% of their oldest citizens having served in the war.<figure>

 </figure>The data used in this analysis is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s&nbsp;2020 American Community Survey. To determine the states with the most World War II veterans, researchers at Porch calculated the World War II veteran share of the 85-and-over population. In the event of a tie, the state with the greater World War II veteran share of the total veteran population was ranked higher.The analysis found that in Kansas, 8.1% of the population aged 85 or older served during World War II.&nbsp;Here is a summary of the data for Kansas:<ul>
