Emancipation Day events coming up Aug. 5 to 7

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For 133 years, Hutchinson has been celebrating Emancipation Proclamation Day the first weekend in August. There is a full weekend of events scheduled.

Friday, August 5th

6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 3-Point Shoot-Out on Washington Street between Ave A and B

(Registration is $5 and begins at 5:00 pm)

Cash prizes will be awarded

6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Dedication of the Chester I. Lewis Plague at the Chester I. Lewis Plaza

13 East 1st Ave (This event is in collaboration with Pope & Parson)

8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Jazz in the Park at the Avenue A Park sponsored by Pope & Parson

Kansas All Star Big Band will perform

The All Stars include the very best jazz musicians in the state of Kansas. Many members are jazz educators from Hays to Wichita to Lawrence and everywhere in between. Several musicians have doctorate degrees in jazz studies or their respective instruments. Coming from the military, cruise ship, or professional big band backgrounds, these professional jazz musicians bring to Kansas the very best in big band entertainment. They all have a connection to the state in some way.

8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Teen Dance at the Encampment Building on KS State Fairgrounds, with free admission (Music provided by 620 In the Mix)

Saturday, August 6th

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Emancipation Parade - Main Street from Ave B to 12th Street

12:00 Noon Community Picnic at HCC Stringer Fine Arts Center

Children’s Activities and Music by 620 in the Mix

9:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. Emancipation Dance at Encampment Building on KS State Fairgrounds

$10 per person (Music by 620 in the Mix)

Sunday, August 7th

3:00 p.m. Gospel Fest at HCC Stringer Fine Arts Center with Ice Cream Social following
