Kan. —The City of Hutchinson and Showalter Fireworks are having their annual display on the 4th of July.&nbsp;

The annual Fireworks Extravaganza happens Monday night at&nbsp;the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Lot C at dusk.

Also on Monday is the Patriots Parade, sponsored by Eagle Media. It starts at 10 a.m. and runs north from B and Main to 12th and Main.

The announcing stand will be in front of the Eagle Media Studios at 9th and Main.

Hutch fireworks display is on the 4th at Fairgrounds

RENO COUNTY — It's important that the public takes care of unspent fireworks properly at the end of their Independence Day fun. 

Such fireworks were responsible for a fire at the Reno County Landfill last year. 

According to the county, here are the procedures for proper disposal.

1. Allow fireworks to cool for 1 hour before handling

2. Fill an appropriately sized trash can halfway up with water

3. After one hour, place all used fireworks, including duds and sparklers into the trash can

4. Let the fireworks soak overnight in the water-filled bin away from any structures

5. Wrap or double wrap the fireworks in a water-soaked plastic bag so they can’t dry out and transfer them to your regular garbage bin for pickup, or take them to your local solid waste facility.

If you don't have a safe place to dispose of unused fireworks and you live in the city, you can call the Hutchinson Fire Department's non-emergency line at (620) 694-2871 and ask them for help.

Kan. — Some Medicare Part D patients from Cigna, ClearSpring and Mutual of Omaha who use the Medicine Shoppe at 14th and Main in Hutchinson for their prescriptions were sent a letter that the pharmacy was no longer in those companies benefits network.

The pharmacy did its legwork to the various companies and found out it was a glitch related to their recredentialing this year.

"Due to extra long processing times, an automatic letter was sent out saying the patients would need to leave our pharmacy," said the Medicine Shoppe on social media. "We have been assured that it was a glitch and you will not need to leave our pharmacy. We have requested a retraction letter."

HARVEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities in Newton reported&nbsp; getting questions about Facebook posts in public groups warning of dangerous criminals on the loose.

According to the police department, the original poster profiles are from Zimbabwe, a country in Africa.

Police have searched the text of the post, and they say you will find the same post in community groups all across the country.

Police say they don't know the purpose of these posts, but many people share them to warn friends and wind up creating panic and fear in the community.

According to Newton Police, "If you see a post like this, please consider whether the source is credible, and feel free to reach out to us to confirm it. Our official PD page is your best source of information about public safety in our community."

Police warn of fake stories on Facebook upsetting the community

UPDATE: As of 6:25 p.m. —&nbsp;The Missouri State Highway Patrol has issued the following statement regarding today's crash of Amtrak's Southwest Chief.

"At approximately 12:43 p.m. today, the Chariton County 911 Center received a 911 call of a vehicle struck by a train on Porche Prairie Avenue in Chariton County, southwest of Mendon, Mo."

"At approximately 1:02 p.m., first responders began to arrive on scene. Preliminary investigation indicates an Amtrak passenger train traveling to Chicago, Illinois, struck a dump truck at the railroad crossing on Porche Prairie Avenue. The train had approximately 8 cars, including a baggage car. Seven cars have derailed. There are multiple injuries and we can confirm there are 3 fatalities — 2 on the train and 1 in the dump truck. Personnel are currently working to secure the scene. The train had approximately 207 passengers and crew members. All injured and uninjured occupants of the train have been transported from the scene."

"Agencies involved include the Chariton County, Linn County, Macon County, Randolph County Sheriff’s Offices, Brookfield and Macon Police Departments, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri State Park Rangers, Missouri State Fire Marshals, and State Emergency Management Agency. Ambulances from Chariton, Linn, Randolph, Livingston, Macon, Howard, Carroll and Caldwell Counties as well as medical helicopters from multiple service providers responded to the scene. Each agency transported multiple victims to area hospitals."

Officials from Amtrak are responding to the scene and the NTSB has been advised.

UPDATE: As of 5:40 p.m. —&nbsp;The Missouri State Highway Patrol says at least three people have been killed in the accident. Two were aboard the train and the third was the driver of the truck. Numerous people have been taken to hospitals in Kansas City and the surrounding area. We do not have word on if any area residents boarded the Chief&nbsp; Monday morning at this time.

There were approximately 243 passengers and 12 crew members on board with early reports of injuries. Local authorities are currently assisting customers. Our Incident Response Team has been activated, and we are deploying emergency personnel to the scene to help support our passengers, our employees, and their families with their needs. MENDON, Mo. — Amtrak's Southwest Chief has been involved in a crash and derailment in Missouri. The accident happened around 12:42 p.m. Monday after the eastbound Chief hit a dump truck at high speed near Mendon, Missouri, which is about 100 miles east of Kansas City.

The company said that 243 passengers were on board the train and there have been multiple injuries. Amtrak has already canceled the westbound Southwest Chief scheduled to leave Chicago Monday afternoon and arrive in Hutchinson Tuesday morning. Photos from passengers show the entire train laying on its side.

The investigation into the accident is underway by the NTSB and Amtrak.

UPDATE: At least 3 confirmed dead in Amtrak crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — While some county roads that have been blocked off due to the K-14 highway project are reopening in Rice County, two of the major Reno County roads are still closed and will be for some time.&nbsp;

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation both W. 82nd Avenue and W. 56th Avenue are still closed while crews finish building bridges and an interchange.&nbsp;

KDOT says 82nd will open by the end of the summer, probably in mid- September.&nbsp; When finished, 82nd will feature a bridge over the new four-lane highway.

The other project will take longer. Officials say that due to the extensive work yet to be done with the interchange that is being built for W. 56th Avenue, that road will remain closed through the late spring or early summer of 2023. Motorists using W. 56th can detour onto Wilson Rd. and go south to K-14.

Starting Wednesday, a third road will close in Reno County connected to the project. KDOT will close Nickerson Rd. from 108th Avenue to 95th Avenue.

Reno County roads still closed due to K-14 project

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Teachers in Pretty Prairie USD 311 have a new contract for next year.

In a special meeting held Monday morning, the USD 311 School Board approved a new contract with teachers. The union has already approved the contract. Most of the major items in the new contract deal with movement on the wage scale for teachers and cleaning up some language.&nbsp;

The contract does hold base pay at this year's level at $40,800.&nbsp;

Also Monday morning, the board accepted the resignation of elementary school principal Tambra Stucky effective at the end of the month. Action came following an executive session by the board.

USD 311 board approves new teachers contract

The newest Kansas American Legion Commander is Jeremy Ehart of Hutchinson. Ehart was installed June 5th in Topeka. 

Jeremy is the 4th Department commander to be elected from Hutchinson, KS Lyle Rishel Post 68 and the first one in over 20 years.

Post 68 Past Dept. Commanders include Max Wyman in 1940, Ed E Newman in 1973, and Dave Warnken in 2000-2001.&nbsp;

Ehart new state Legion commander

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Skip Wilson is working through his final Boys and Girls Club week this week as the head of the organization, but he's happy with where they are.

"I've always told Kim, my wife, and I've told my mentor, Mr. Butch Dillon that I would never, never leave our organization until I really felt like we had a stable footing in regard to our financial support and financials and we had just incredible vision leaders or staff. I think, at this time, I can't be more proud of the vision leaders we have assembled with the programs that we are operating."

The Boys and Girls Club is now organized with elementary level students at Avenue A and all above that at Shadduck Park. There will be an event Tuesday at the Shadduck Park location.

"We've got a couple of things going on Tuesday," said Lance Patterson with the club. "Wear blue to support the Boys and Girls Club. We have Boys and Girls Club T-shirts. If your business wants to be a part of that, give Elycia a call at the Boys and Girls Club and we will make sure you get some T-Shirts and we just want to celebrate Boys and Girls Club by showing everybody our blue colors. Then, also, that evening, we're going to have a family night and have bounce house, we're going to have some free hot dogs and have some fun at our Shadduck Park site."

The elementary grades get an early experience with EPIC Skillz this summer as the club is hosting a Career Fair, where kids get to dress up as their favorite career

The teens are taking over the Boys and Girls Club <a href="https://www.facebook.com/bgchutch">Facebook</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bgchutch/">Instagram</a> for Club life from the teens perspective.

Throughout July is the Our Kids Scholarship Campaign. The Scholarship is to help keep membership fees low so all kids that want to come can do so.

"Any young person that walks through our doors, we just look at them and say, don't worry about it," Wilson said. "If you have any issues at all, we'll take care of it, because we want that young person here with us."

Boys and Girls Club Week, a great opportunity to help

Harvest is a farmer’s Super Bowl. It’s the culmination of a year’s work and his way to measure success.

After the last load of wheat heads to town, there is a final buzz of activity. Equipment is cleaned and put away, paperwork sorted and other things neglected during harvest are checked on.

The stress of constant activity, anticipation and worry, ebbs and there is room to breathe; a moment of thankfulness and rest.

That brief rest is a special time for a farm family. Though a farmer’s work is never done, a fresh sense of accomplishment reminds a farmer that even God rested occasionally. The win of harvest gives farm families a small window for a holiday.

Marc and I love both love to plan trips and travel to fun destinations, but he often struggles to commit to plans far enough in advance to book tickets or make firm commitments with friends. He can’t predict the weather, if irrigators will break down, when crops will be ready to harvest, if cattle fences will need unexpected mending, a storm causing damage or all the other unpredicted but steady tasks that keep farmers busy 365 days a year.

But when the stars align, a brief vacation is in order. We love to grab a road map and snacks and jump in the car for a day of exploring the hidden gems of our neighboring towns in Kansas.

Some people may read this and think I mean Wichita, Kansas City or one of our larger cities. Though these cities have some wonderful attractions, they are rarely the focus of our Kansas adventures.

A little over a decade ago when I first moved here, the Kansas Sampler Foundation had just completed their “8 Wonders of Kansas” publications. That list joined personal recommendations from friends and our paper atlas to create ready inspiration for any of a dozen day trips we have ready for moments when the opportunity arises for us to travel this beautiful and unique state.

If you have never seen the “8 Wonders of Kansas” or taken a day trip to the small towns who have pulled together resources to create museums, preserved history, share local art, or supported unique customs and businesses, you are missing out.

Another joy of these day trips is that very little planning allows us to be flexible and see where the road leads us. This year our postharvest adventure started with my dad’s (a farmer who sees helping during wheat harvest as his annual vacation) interest in the Kansas Motorcycle Museum in Marquette.

Lunch at the Ranch House, an extensive and well maintained motorcycle collection and a very trendy and cool Smoky Hill Distillery awaited us on Main Street in Marquette. Next we decided to travel to neighboring Lindsborg for the view from Coronado Heights, the Old Mill Museum and the Dala Horse artists at Hemslojd. We meandered home through Lyons for a tasty dinner at the County Seat. Our day in towns with less than 4,000 people included rare items, interesting culture and history, great food and drink, and wonderful family memories.

Small town Kansas may not be on the top of your vacation bucket list, but it is full of interesting people who freely share their passion with the people who step into their towns every day. That is what make traveling through our state so amazing.

The next time you have a moment to pause for an adventure, I hope you will get out and see what the small towns around our state have to offer. Maybe I will see you there.

He can’t predict the weather, if irrigators will break down, when crops will be ready to harvest, if cattle fences will need unexpected mending, a storm causing damage or all the other unpredicted but steady tasks that keep farmers busy 365 days a year.But when the stars align, a brief vacation is in order. We love to grab a road map and snacks and jump in the car for a day of exploring the hidden gems of our neighboring towns in Kansas.Some people may read this and think I mean Wichita, Kansas City or one of our larger cities. Insight: The Joy of Farm Family Day Trips

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's time for fireworks starting this week in Reno County and in Hutchinson.

"This all starts the 30th, so Thursday, through the 4th," said Hutchinson Fire Marshal Mike Cain. "Eight a.m. to 11 p.m, you can shoot them off."

The discharge of fireworks in both the City of Hutchinson and unincorporated areas of the county is limited to so-called Safe and Sane Fireworks. That is not a brand, but rather types of fireworks that include fountains, sparklers, smokeballs, snake-type fireworks, ground-spinning fireworks, pinwheels, most novelty fireworks, toytrick noisemakers, and some crackling items, basically anything that doesn’t leave the ground.

"Nothing over six feet," Cain said. "Small fountains and regular firecrackers and stuff like that. No aerials."

If you buy fireworks elsewhere, you need to shoot them there, because, as an example, South Hutchinson allows fireworks that Hutchinson does not.

"If you buy them in South Hutch and you bring them back, they are still illegal," Cain said. "You run the potential of getting a summons to see me in court."

Cain said that only happens a couple of times a year. Generally, if they have to go talk to someone, they will tell them they didn't know what they couldn't do and they will stop. It's when they get the second call out to someplace and it's clear that they haven't stopped that a summons is generally issued and the illegal fireworks could be confiscated.

"We'll have five stands within the city this year," Cain said. "If you buy the fireworks with any of those five stands, you will be legal, because that's all they can sell is what you can shoot in town. If you buy them here in town, you can shoot them here in town."

That's assuming you are shooting them on your own property or on property where you have written permission to be. If you are seen shooting on property you don't own, firefighters can ask you for that permission and if you don't have it, they can ask you to leave. Remember that in the street is not your property, even if it is in front of your house. Stay at the end of your driveway, as far away from your house as you can, with no overhead obstructions.

"As I've had discussion with quite a few people over the years, the street seems like the safest place," Cain said. "You're out in the middle of the street, there's nothing around. Especially with having the kids go out and light them, which I don't suggest either, as it starts to get dark, people driving down that street, unless that firework is going off, they're not going to see somebody out in the street and you run the potential of somebody actually getting hit by a car."

Fire marshal: Be safe and sane with fireworks, starting June 30

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The city of Hutchinson saw a 15.7% increase in sales tax revenue in June when compared to the previous year.&nbsp;

According to figures released on Monday, the city took in $1,612,591, compared to $1,393,082 in 2021, an increase of nearly $220,000.&nbsp;

The sales tax on the Hutchinson Sports Arena project totaled just over $321,000 and the ¼-cent sales tax for the city also brought in about $229,000 for the entities it supports.

For the first half of the calendar year the city has taken in a total of $8.891,792 or about 47% from its budget projection for the year.&nbsp;

Sales tax revenue for June reflects shopping trends for the month of April.

City sales tax revenue increases in June

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After much discussion over the past several months, Reno County Commissioners may be ready to dole out money from the ARPA COVID relief fund. The county is getting about $12 million in ARPA funds. During their last meeting, the commission further discussed the matter and stressed that it was time to act on the requests that have been presented. 

There are some changes in the requests going before the commission on Tuesday. They include $235,000 for economic development, $50,000 for the Pretty Prairie EMS center, and a software purchase for Reno County 911 at a cost of $115,000.

Some of the requests already before the commission include $4.5 million for Interfaith Housing for housing development, $1 million for workforce development through Hutchinson Community College and $3 million for various building needs in Reno County, including the downtown EMS station and Health Department.

Tuesday's meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

ARPA funds headline Reno Co. Commission meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Horizons CEO Mike Garrett prepares to retire at the end of the month, the change to more telehealth services initially prompted by COVID has been one of the bigger changes in his 41 years in the field.

"We had done, probably eight to ten percent of our services telehealth, primarily to our area offices, prior to the pandemic," Garrett said. "Then, within a week to ten days, we converted to about 95% of our services. That's trickled down. We still see a number of people that prefer to be seen face to face. I would say we fall into that 25 to 30% now."

One of the reasons that someone might need to go in to Horizons in person is to make sure any applicable medications are monitored.

"We have a medical department," Garrett said. "We have two psychiatrists on staff and five mid-level prescribers and when anybody comes in to the center, we get their vital signs first. Height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, those type of things. That's critical for the med provider to assess the individual, the impact the medication is having on them, are there any side effects and then what they need to help that individual in that particular session."

The different types of medications are also another innovation within Garrett's career.

"A primary focus with the development of medications is to control side effects," Garrett said. "The side effects are the number one reason that people stop taking medications and we want compliance as much as we can, so they can have a better life. There's a constant effort to decrease side effects, increase effectiveness, so that you have greater effectiveness with medication."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The MidState Street Rods are having a Show and Shine in Carey Park July 3 from 6 p.m. until dark.

It is a public display for street rods, classics, antiques, street machines, motorcycles and all such vehicles.

This is not a competition. There is no entry fee, no judging and no trophies. There will be free dash plaques for the first 100 cars.

There will also be a food truck available. As a reminder, there are no alcoholic beverages in the park.

Bump to Baby of Reno County July class schedule told

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education will look at a grant request through the Safe &amp; Secure Schools Grant from the Kansas State Department of Education at its meeting Monday.

The district is requesting $225,000 through this grant. The funds will be used for intruder resistant glass in the nine buildings that don’t currently have it in place. 

They are also requesting additional security cameras and door access controls. The grant funds have a $1 to $1 local match requirement.

Also on the agenda, the Board will adopt its English and Language Arts curriculum and World Language curriculum, make an amendment to the school year calendar for the upcoming year, sign the memorandums of understanding with the various groups connected with Reno County Head Start, approve the purchase of a rooftop HVAC unit for the Technology Support Center at a cost of $24,392 and renew its worker's compensation insurance.

The USD 308 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the school district offices at 1520 North Plum.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager said she's still working on getting all the different potential ballots ready for the August 2 primary.

"We'll have a ballot style for the Republican, a ballot style for the Democrat and then a non-partisan, I guess we'll call it, ballot style with just the amendment question," Fager said. 

That's 255 potential different ballot styles depending on party and precinct. With the abortion-related constitutional amendment on the ballot in Kansas after Roe v. Wade was overturned Friday, it's possible turnout could be remarkably strong for a primary election, but Fager usually looks at the last similar election when deciding how many ballots to print.

"Typically, I'll look at the last election, so like the last gubernatorial's turnout. I also do take into consideration how many voted like, in the presidential," Fager said. "I'll shoot a little bit higher than the turnout for the previous election, so like the previous gubernatorial and that's how I do my quantities."

She doesn't have to get it dead on, though.

"For our advance voting now, we have a ballot on demand printer," Fager said. "That does help. I don't actually have to account for that, as long as we've got the ballot stock. It will print it when they come in."

Voter registration must be in by July 12.

Fager: Work continues on ballots for August primary

ONEOK has expanded its support of the July 2 fireworks and events in South Hutchinson. 

"Originally, they committed to providing food to the first 500 people, said City Manager Joseph Turner. "This week they announced they would cover 1,000 people."

Turner said their participation was completely organic and self-initiated.

According to an email from Nathan Alexander to Turner provided to Hutch Post, they are now planning to prepare 1,000 hot dogs and hand out individual bags of chips with the hot dogs. 

They also plan to bring 1,000 squinchers (think Gatorade and freeze pop combined) as well as 2000 bottles of water.

On top of the food they are providing, they have also donated $2,000 to the city to help offset their other expenses.

Also on July 2, there will be free inflatable bounce houses and a rock-climbing wall for the kids along with an obstacle course provided by the South Hutch Fire Department.

Free hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be available&nbsp; thanks to ONEOK.

The Los Mariachis Food Truck and Salt City Chiller Shaved Ice Truck will also be there.

The Hutchinson Home Plate Club also is hoping to hold a cornhole tournament in the afternoon and baseball and softball games.

The fireworks show to start at 9:30 p.m. will last about 20 minutes in the large open field west of the baseball diamonds. The fireworks are sponsored by Market South Hutch.

ONEOK expanding help with South Hutch July 2 celebration

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law enforcement made two arrests Friday afternoon after they say two armed subjects entered a Hutchinson business.

Hutchinson police say a call came in at 3:21 p.m. Friday about two armed subjects at the Adams Street Auto Repair at 528 N. Adams.

The police identified the men as 48-year-old Kevin D. Shipman and 19-year-old Jesse D. Shipman.

Law enforcement closed off the area streets as they took both men in for one suspected count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. They are both still in the Reno County Correctional Facility. No one was hurt.
