HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tyson missed its earnings expectations but still turned in solid numbers as it released its third quarter earnings on Monday.

Adjusted earnings per share were $1.94 per share for the quarter, missing estimates of $1.98. Sales totaled $13.4 billion, up from $12.4 billion in 2021. The lower than expected numbers drove shares of Tyson down on Monday.

Sales in the prepared foods division totaled&nbsp; $2.4 billion and operating income increased 7.6% to $186 million. Sales volume decreased in the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 2022 due to the impacts of increased pricing, and the uneven recovery in the foodservice industry. Operating income increased in the third quarter of fiscal 2022 due to higher average sales prices, partially offset by the impacts of inflationary market conditions.

The two Tyson prepared food plants in Hutchinson and South Hutchinson employ about 575 workers.

Tyson releases earnings report

Kan. — After winning Tuesday's Republican primary for the State Board of Education in District 7, Dennis Hershberger believes there are changes that need to be made in K-12 curriculum.

"Some of these things seem to be driven by some kind of elite group or whatever that are publishers that are pushing their agenda to create a socialist type of nanny state," Hershberger said. "I'm not sure how that's going to work out. There's always money attached to those things, it seems like."

Hershberger is a local control advocate, as much as possible.

"I really just like the idea of the local board and administration being as much in control as possible, along with parent involvement," Hershberger said. "That was really one of my campaign efforts was to try to separate out the responsibilities, so that the state board would do what they are supposed to do, to present good alternatives, but then let local boards and superintendents handle the teaching issue."

Hershberger's children were not public school kids.

"We homeschooled our own children for 15 years," Hershberger said. "My wife was determined to do that and did a great job. Then we had some private education at the end for one of our children. I know that there are good ways of approaching problems. I'm just hopeful that we, as a board there, can look at alternatives and not just do some of the old approaches that have failed."

There is no Democrat in the race, so Hershberger will begin serving on the State Board in January.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager is dealing with a hand recount of only the advance walk-in ballots from Tuesday's primary election, as a random audit of 11 precincts on Friday found discrepancies in numbers related to the Republican State Treasurer's race.

The election day voting audit was correct, so the hand count, which is being conducted by nine election boards of three people each, is only of the around 3500 ballots that were cast at the Reno County Annex prior to election day.

The hope is to finish the hand count today, so that the canvass can happen on schedule Thursday morning with the Board of County Commissioners. However, if the hand count stretches into later in the week, then Fager said they may have to push the canvass back to Monday the 15th.

The tight Reno County District 1 county commission race had its count come out correct, so at this point, that race still has Randy Parks in front by six votes. However, all races will be counted again for the walk-in advance ballots that are being looked at anyway.

The Republican State Treasurer's race is too close to call on the state level at this point as it is, so every vote will likely matter. Fager intends to update Hutch Post later in the day as to the progress of the hand count.

Election audit prompts narrow hand count in Reno County

Kan. — There are lots of challenges for Horizons Mental Health Center as it continues growth into a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, but two are at the top of new CEO Vicki Mader's mind.

"There is still a stigma out there," Mader said. "People are scared to get help. We still need to work on that. I also would say that, logistically, staffing is a huge issue for us right now."

That's across the spectrum of training levels, it's a shortage of both providers and those that care for patients who may not have that training.

"Finding a staff that want to work in this field has been hard since COVID," Mader said. "It really has. We've lost a lot of therapists and we are continuing to look for more staffing, trying to come up with ideas and programs to grow students. We were looking at paid internships and things like that and then trying to support our staff the best that we can."

It is a mentally taxing thing to work with other's mental health problems, as well, so self-care for those who are in the profession is also key.

"The people that get into this profession are very caring people and they want to take care of others," Mader said. "It's really hard for them to separate that. We have to be able to support them to take a break, but be able to provide the best care that they can."

Mader: Stigma and staffing are challenges for Horizons

Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel understands that the City of Hutchinson's water resource is something that is being looked at more closely now in light of the needs in Yoder Water District 101, but while that topic is open is a good time to do the studying that it would take to figure out if getting water to a potential new industrial park south of South Hutchinson is feasible or not.

"Water really drives everything," Teufel said. "Sometimes, it becomes an emergency situation, like what's happening down in Yoder," Teufel said. "The development that we have been working toward south of South Hutchinson definitely also will be predicated on can we get water there? To me, that means there needs to be a deal struck at some point in time between the city of Hutchinson and South Hutchinson, just like what Hutchinson is doing to help with the Yoder water situation."

The city of Hutchinson needs to let the state know what it's going to do with the water rights it has. That process is known in legal terms as perfecting a water right.

"Gary and I have been talking about looking at our water rights," said Brian Clennan with the city to the City Council at their last meeting. "I've gotten some information from the Division of Water Resources, kind of assessing our total water rights, big picture. I haven't had a chance to dive in to that spreadsheet. Gary and I will be meeting with DWR, probably later this month, to get their assessment."

Clennan said the city is using about 65% of their total water rights right now. If you don't show the state your intended use for a water right and then use it that way, you can eventually lose that water right, which is legally called abandonment.

"If we need some additional information, we may look at doing a small study, just to make sure that our information and how we are looking forward is going to be realistic," City Manager Gary Meagher told the council. "We're certainly going to be reporting back to you at some point as to where we are with South Hutchinson and perhaps others."

The council wants to be sure that there is enough water, the key to that may actually be finding additional use for the rights they already have.

Hutch to look at water rights situation closely with additional use in mind

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven USD 312 School Board will hold an executive session during Monday's meeting to discuss the current negotiations with its teachers.

After several rounds of negotiations, the two sides declared an impasse. A mediator has been brought in and the two sides will sit down again this week. The major sticking point is salaries, with the district offering a 2.5% pay increase. The union countered with a raise of 6%, which is above what is being sought by teachers in most school districts and higher education on average this year.&nbsp;

It’s the second time in three years that the two sides have had significant discussion on salaries. In 2019, the two sides met numerous times before finally reaching an agreement on salaries. At this time, Haven USD 312 has one of the highest base salaries of the six Reno County School Districts at $40,473. A 6% increase would raise base pay to $42,900.

Monday’s meeting of the Haven USD 312 School Board begins at 6 p.m. at the Haven district offices at 414 W. Main.

Haven USD 312 School Board to discuss ongoing negotiations

Tracey File with the Central State Academy Virtual School notes that virtual education isn't for everyone, but it can help a lot of students succeed.

"We are asynchronous and that works very well for us," File said. "Sometimes, if I get a parent calling in, especially of an elementary student who wants some bigger classroom involvement, that's not how we operate."

The model Central State Academy uses is very dependent on the individual student and how motivated they are.

"Students do get on to their curriculum, they work at their own pace," File said. "It's already pre-set. Our students, again, really like that. Then, we're just responsible for tracking them and making sure they are doing what they need to do and assisting them, should they have questions or needs at all, in whatever format, individually along the way."

This type of instruction can be particularly useful for students who are incredibly strong in one area while being weak in another, because they can get ahead where they are good and spend time on where they need help.

"If we can just encourage them to give it a shot and really focus, a lot of times they do better in those concepts," File said. "They are able to work on them and focus on them without the outside distractions, without feeling like they are the one in the class who doesn't get it."

She added that the number of meals served in Yoder was up by about 30%.

Summer meal numbers strong in Haven and Nickerson school districts

AMBUCS began life back in 1922 as American Business Clubs, a membership organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities. The local Hutchinson AMBUCS chapter continues that tradition by raising money for mobility tricycles called Amtryke.

"We've been in business here in Hutchinson for the last 41 years," said President Randall Haltom. "Basically, our mission is creating and inspiring mobility and independence for people with disabilities. We meet every Friday morning and we have speakers and we raise money to help people by furnishing Amtrykes, we also give away scholarships and we help the community in other ways by donating money."

The meetings are Fridays at 7 a.m. at the Downtown Sampler in the First National Bank building. The scholarships are for students going into physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. The Amtrykes are to help those who need those kinds of therapies to move on their own.

"You think of a tricycle, how's that going to help somebody?" Haltom said. "They're not able to walk or use their feet, so there's pedals up above, where the handlebars are that they can use to pedal around. You just see their face light up. For the first time, maybe in years, if ever, they have a way of moving around without assistance of a parent, or a brother or sister or a teacher, something like that."

A big fundraiser for AMBUCS is coming up next month at the Kansas State Fair.

"We would like to encourage everybody to come see us," Haltom said. "People know us from years ago as the ice cream booth. We redid that facility six or seven years ago, and it's now called The Sweet Shop. We tell people to stop and see us. Most people come back yearly once they get used to coming to us, because as soon as you open the door, a blast of cold air and the aroma of waffle cones is overwhelming. People love to come in and see us and we named it The Sweet Shop, too, because, in addition to ice cream cones, we do sundaes, we do cookies, ice cream sandwiches, we have fudge, you name it. Things like that."

It is the club's only fundraiser and they hope to net $25,000 to $30,000 from the fair. The Sweet Shop, renovated in 2014, is just down the road from the KWCH booth at the fairgrounds.

The local Hutchinson AMBUCS chapter continues that tradition by raising money for mobility tricycles called Amtryke."We've been in business here in Hutchinson for the last 41 years," said President Randall Haltom. "Basically, our mission is creating and inspiring mobility and independence for people with disabilities. We meet every Friday morning and we have speakers and we raise money to help people by furnishing Amtrykes, we also give away scholarships and we help the community in other ways by donating money."The meetings are Fridays at 7 a.m. at the Downtown Sampler in the First National Bank building. The scholarships are for students going into physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. The Amtrykes are to help those who need those kinds of therapies to move on their own."You think of a tricycle, how's that going to help somebody?" Haltom said. "They're not able to walk or use their feet, so there's pedals up above, where the handlebars are that they can use to pedal around. You just see their face light up. For the first time, maybe in years, if ever, they have a way of moving around without assistance of a parent, or a brother or sister or a teacher, something like that."A big fundraiser for AMBUCS is coming up next month at the Kansas State Fair."We would like to encourage everybody to come see us," Haltom said. "People know us from years ago as the ice cream booth. We redid that facility six or seven years ago, and it's now called The Sweet Shop. We tell people to stop and see us. Most people come back yearly once they get used to coming to us, because as soon as you open the door, a blast of cold air and the aroma of waffle cones is overwhelming. People love to come in and see us and we named it The Sweet Shop, too, because, in addition to ice cream cones, we do sundaes, we do cookies, ice cream sandwiches, we have fudge, you name it. Things like that."It is the club's only fundraiser and they hope to net $25,000 to $30,000 from the fair. The Sweet Shop, renovated in 2014, is just down the road from the KWCH booth at the fairgrounds.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Emancipation Celebration kicked off Friday evening with a special dedication of a plaque honoring Chester I. Lewis. The plaque was presented during a special ceremony at the plaza named in his honor. In attendance was Brenda Davis, the daughter of Chester I. Lewis who talked about what it means to have the plaza named in her fathers honor.

“I think my father would be very honored that this plaza is in his name,” Davis said. “That it highlights the things that he felt strongly about.”

Lewis was a voice not only for education for many other things as well when it came to civil rights.

“He felt strongly about equality, quality in the aircraft industry; he was a firm believer in education,” Davis said. “He opened the pools and the schools. He dedicated his life to civil rights.”&nbsp;

Davis says the park brings a permanent message to younger people about what it means to work for equality.

“My father used to say ”do you want to be free” and to be free everyone has to be free,” Davis said. “I think younger people, they haven’t had that struggle.”

Davis refers to segregation in local businesses and other areas. She says that message needs to not be lost.

Lewis, a Hutchinson native, was a prominent local Civil Rights leader who served on the legal team that argued the landmark 1954 Brown v. Topeka Board of Education case before the U.S. Supreme Court. He also provided guidance to the NAACP Youth Council during the first successful series of student sit-ins at the Dockum Drug Store lunch counter in Wichita in 1958.&nbsp;

Their courage inspired other similar sit-ins across the country and helped bring about racial equality at places including restaurants, businesses and swimming pools.

The dedication was part of the annual Emancipation Celebration which runs through the weekend in Hutchinson.

Lewis Plaza dedication held Friday evening in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Eighteen new D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officers graduated Friday from the D.A.R.E. Officer Training (DOT) at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). The program is an intensive two-week course designed using current educational philosophies and principles that enhance the transfer of decision-making and critical thinking skills.&nbsp;

Program graduates received a working knowledge of the elementary, middle school and high school D.A.R.E. curricula. They also received an overview of topics including opioids, over-the-counter and prescription drugs, vaping in middle and high school, and teen mental health lessons created by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, California. It’s an education program that teaches students about the impact of drugs and violent behavior.&nbsp;

Jeff Smith, the Head Training Facilitator for the D.A.R.E. training team, has been with D.A.R.E. for 30 years. He facilitates six to 10 training programs a year and enjoyed being able to work with young police officers.

Law enforcement training center graduates DARE officers

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Heat Advisory for the afternoon hours on Saturday and Sunday, ending Sunday at 7 p.m.

Heat index values of 105 to 108 are expected. 

Heat illnesses may occur due to the hot temperatures
  and high heat indices especially for those working or
  participating in outdoor activities. 

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out
of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances.



Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. 

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Local artist Brady Scott created the mural "Cotton Candy Sunset at the Fair", including an iconic silhouette of the Kansas State Fair midway against a rural Kansas backdrop. Visit Hutch was awarded a 50/50 matching grant through the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission. In part, funding was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mural will be during the fair Thursday, September 15 at 9:15 a.m. at the mural site. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, as well as Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe, have been invited to attend.&nbsp; &nbsp;

New look for visitors center at fairgrounds

Kan. — Tiffany Davison with the American Red Cross told Hutch Post Friday that they are still looking to fill appointments for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week for the blood drive at the First Presbyterian Church at 201 East Sherman.

The drive's Monday hours are from noon to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday is from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday is from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hutchinson blood drive still filling appointments for next week

Kan. — Though there is a statewide teacher shortage, Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman says that's not true in her district right now.

"We are very blessed," Couchman said. "If you've been watching the news at all, you know there is a staffing shortage in our buildings across the state of Kansas. It's across the United States. Teachers, we just can't find them right now. Buhler, right now, we are fully staffed."

That's referring to classroom teachers. They do still have a support staff issue, particularly when it comes to bus drivers.

"When I started at Buhler, we used to do staggered bus times," Couchman said. "We're going back to staggered bus times. It allows us to have a bus driver go out, run a route to a school, deliver those students and then go run another route at another school."

Other classified non-teaching positions also still have openings, things like people who work with food and paraprofessionals, etc.

"We are still looking to fill positions on our classified side," Couchman said. "We are not fully staffed there.  We need to open. There's things that are really critical."

"I feel like I have been having meetings, maybe daily about the hotel room situation in Hutchinson and really some positive movement. Now, I've mentioned that there have been three hotel developers looking at this market, I would say two more seriously at this point. Both are intent on the model that works best for them to be profitable, but also the mix of other things that will make it all make sense."

Convention space, a restaurant, an entertainment venue, all are possibilities with one or both of the projects. 

"The mayor has been involved in those talks," Teufel said. "The City Manager has been in almost every one of them. We're really blessed to have a great interim City Manager in Gary Meagher, because he's keeping the city side of this moving, as well. Just yesterday afternoon, the last meeting in my office was with one of those hotel developers. I think I started the day talking about a STAR Bond district. There are good things on the horizon for hotels. I feel it for Hutchinson. It's been painful. We need those 200 hotel rooms back."

Given the need for that many rooms, Teufel believes there is space and demand for more than one project.

"I think it's plausible that we have both happen," Teufel said. "Both of these developers are looking at about a 100-room hotel. We can defend the numbers that we need 200 rooms. I don't think they are, either one, scared off by the other. I think it's a both."

Even if all the I's are dotted and T's are crossed this summer, we're still talking about almost a two-year process.

"I am so glad that we have two committed hotel developers working with great brands, working on a model," Teufel said. "I know the city council wants to see this happen. Now, it's just all in the details of what is the right mix of whether it's a CID, what's the percentage with transient guest tax that would help with the convention center aspect. Working out all those details is where we're at right now."

The most ambitious of the developers told Teufel that the goal is to get open by the 2024 Kansas State Fair. The specific locations have not been finalized yet, either.

Earlier in the spring, both restrooms at Bunte Park and at Rivers Banks Orchard Park were closed because of extensive damage.

The restroom at the small park between E. 27th and Lazy Lane will be closed until parts to make repairs arrive.

Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer says the crew is doing well. The three are part of a strike team with four other engines from Colorado and Virginia. They are still on a pre-position assignment outside of Dallas/Fort Worth.&nbsp;

Texas is primed for fires currently, with very hot and dry conditions. They have had two overhaul assignments and are doing training with the other engines, even training with aviation equipment.

Their 14-day assignment ends on the 13th. They will travel home on the 14th.

Hutch Fire crews continue fire relief efforts in Texas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 46-year-old Hutchinson man riding a bicycle was killed when he hit an SUV at 10th and Severance in Hutchinson Thursday night.

According to Hutchinson Police Capt. Michael Collins, the accident happened just before 8:15 p.m. when the SUV, driven by 56-year-old Laurie Hinderliter, was southbound on Severance and collided with Heath Volkman on his bicycle in the 10th and Severance intersection.

Volkman was pronounced dead at the scene. Hinderliter was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center to be checked out and was later released.

The Hutchinson police traffic unit continues to investigate the accident.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 46-year-old Hutchinson man riding a bicycle was killed when he hit an SUV at 10th and Severance in Hutchinson Thursday night.According to Hutchinson Police Capt. Michael Collins, the accident happened just before 8:15 p.m. when the SUV, driven by 56-year-old Laurie Hinderliter, was southbound on Severance and collided with Heath Volkman on his bicycle in the 10th and Severance intersection.Volkman was pronounced dead at the scene. Hinderliter was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center to be checked out and was later released.The Hutchinson police traffic unit continues to investigate the accident.

MARION, Kan. — Conditions have improved at Marion Reservoir to allow the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to lower the algae alert to “watch” status.

The lake has been suffering from algae blooms since early in the summer. At one point conditions got so bad that the entire lake and park areas were closed down. A watch means that algae is still present in some places and care should be taken when boating or fishing and contact with the lake is discouraged.&nbsp;

All other lakes in the area are free from any advisories for this week.

Algae infestation lessens at Marion

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners will look over a grant proposal they hope can be used in wildfire mitigation during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

In May, commissioners approved Reno County Emergency Management to submit a letter of intent to the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) for wildfire mitigation funding.&nbsp; The letter of intent was required before the total funding amount was known or the application period was open. The county now has an opportunity to receive more than $1.3 million worth of grant funding with the county’s share adding another $323,000 for a total of over $1.6 million.

The money would be used to mitigate the wildfire danger in and around the most populated high risk areas around Reno County.&nbsp;

The county has been looking for ways to lessen the wildfire danger especially north and east of Hutchinson where several fires caused considerable damage including the March 5th Cottonwood Complex fire that claimed one life, destroyed 35 homes and a number of outbuildings.

Reno Co. Commission to discuss fire mitigation grant

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Emancipation Celebration kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday in Hutchinson.

Lots of activities are planned including the special dedication ceremony for a plaque honoring Chester I. Lewis. The dedication will take place at the Chester I. Lewis Plaza at 12 E. 1st starting at 6 p.m.&nbsp; Also on Friday night will be the 3-point shootout along Washington near Avenue A, a jazz concert in Avenue A Park and a teen dance at the encampment building at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

Saturday kicks off with the annual Emancipation Parade starting at 10 a.m. at Ave. B. The parade will run north to 12th Avenue. A community picnic will follow at 12 noon at the Stringer Fine Arts Center and a dance at the encampment building on the fairgrounds at 9 p.m.

The celebration ends with the Sunday gospel fest and ice cream social at 3 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — &nbsp;The Reno Recovery Collaborative (RRC) unveiled a new online portal this week that includes resources and information for friends, family, and individuals affected by substance use.

The Reno Recovery Portal, <a href="http://www.renorecoveryks.com/">www.renorecoveryks.com</a>, is a centralized location that bridges the gap between community organizations, treatment providers, and citizens. The portal includes essential crisis, treatment and community resources, self-assessment tools, education, and prevention tools.

In 2018, with the leadership of the Reno County Health Department, Reno County re-energized its Drug Task Force efforts in order to connect citizens with resources and treatment for those directly and indirectly involved with substance use. As the Drug Task Force evolved into what is now called The Reno Recovery Collaborative, a strategic planning process created the Reno Recovery Portal.

The portal is dedicated to those who have been lost, those who are seeking help, and the family members who struggle beside them.
