Pieter Miller with the Hutchinson Airport told Hutch Post they are just getting started with an airport business plan.

"The reason we put this plan together and we've been trying to put it together here for several years, is to put on paper what it is we should be doing as far as economic development at the airport goes," Miller said. "We are about 65% self-sufficient out there. 65% of my budget comes from revenue sources on the airport. Leases, farming, fuel sales, things like that. In order to get that number higher, we need to figure out ways to increase the opportunity for revenue at the airport. Put another way, we need to build more hangars and get more airplanes out there. There's a process for that. We're trying to figure out the most beneficial and economically responsible way to do that."

The airport, like the rest of the economy, took some hits from the changes in everyone's lives due to COVID-19, but it also caused some positive change.

"The pandemic pretty much wrecked everything," Miller said. "All airports, that's why those emergency grant funds came through in order for us to keep the doors open and the lights on, because airplanes stopped for about six months. We didn't have a whole lot going on. Since then, however, it has come roaring back, like we've never seen before. We are above average operations, anywhere from 37 to 39, almost 40,000 operations we've had over the last couple of years. A lot of that is flight training. Apparently, people went out and bought airplanes during the pandemic. Corporate business traffic is way up."

It's because of that success that the airport believes there is a path to self-sufficiency, and maybe even eventually to the airport being its own department.

"All sorts of different corporations have been purchasing private jets and they've been training their pilots and Hutchinson is kind of known as a training pilot airport," Miller said. "Flight schools and the different manufacturers out of Wichita helps with traffic."

Miller also said it is their intent to ask for additional funding as part of this business plan from the Kansas Forest Service to continue to support their tanker that is based out of Hutchinson.

USD 373 puts out stakeholder survey

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/1de59651-f506-4f43-9977-81c765d5b760">One week ago at Coffeyville, running back Dylan Kedzior was called upon in the fourth quarter to score the game's go-ahead touchdown</a>. That performance led to him being named RB1 against No. 9 Butler.

"He's been the man the last two weeks," head coach Drew Dallas said after the game. Kedzior ran for 230 yards against the Grizzlies and scored four touchdowns.

His first score came on the ground early in the second quarter. Kedzior broke free on a 23-yard scamper. The extra point was blocked by Caylen Lowery, keeping the score locked at 6-6.

The Grizzlies opened up the scoring with two Carson Arndt field goals. The Wichita native hit from 40 and 46 in the first quarter to put Butler up six early.

"Our defense had that bend-but-don't-break mentality early," Dallas said of his defense giving up only field goals.

Arndt attempted five kicks on the evening, connecting on four. His only miss came from 46 yards in the fourth quarter. Arndt was good from 40, 46, 32 and 22.

His 22-yard field goal with 7:33 to play kept the game a one-possession contest at 27-19. Hutchinson held Butler to 4th-and-goal at the 5-yard line before the attempt.

Hutchinson took a 20-16 lead into the locker room after three Kedzior touchdowns. Two were on the ground (from 23 and 17 yards out) and one was on a sensational grab in the corner of the end zone from 4 yards away just before halftime.

"When we got him, he was a wide receiver," Dallas said of his star running back.

The catch in the end zone was challenged by Butler, but officials confirmed the call on the field.

Before that grab, Butler had a 16-13 advantage after the two field goals and a Jaisean McMillian 3-yard score. The run capped a 6-play, 75-yard drive and would be the only TD of the night for No. 9 Butler (3-2, 3-1).

"The defense stepped up in a big way in the second half," Dallas said of his team's physical play that dominated the last 30 minutes.

Butler managed just one field goal in the second half.

No. 2 Hutchinson (5-0, 2-0) took a 27-16 lead with 5:09 left in the third quarter on a Kedzior 7-yard run. The score capped a 12-play, 91-yard drive that wiped 6:43 off the clock.

Hutchinson looked ready to ice the game with a 25-yard field goal with 1:17 remaining. However, Butler's Caleb Brown blocked the Cole Segraves attempt. Segraves went 0-for-2 (38 and 25 yards). His 38-yard attempt went just left. He hit 3 of 4 extra-point attempts, the one miss was blocked.

Hutchinson's defense intercepted a Jake Wolff pass after it was deflected to seal the contest with 44 seconds left. One problem, the Dragons were called for an illegal substitution.

The defense closed the door once again, however, when Walter Bob Jr. stripped Wolff of the ball and Rodney Green Jr. fell on it with 23 seconds remaining.

Dylan Kedzior finished with 230 yards on 28 carries (8.2 yards per carry). He had four touchdowns (three on the ground, one through the air).

The other Dylan, quarterback Dylan Laible, completed 17 passes for 224 yards and the one TD to Kedzior.

Micah Woods caught four passes for 107 yards.

The Dragon defense held Jake Wolff to 23 of 41 passing. He finished with 271 yards. Jeremiah Payton led the Butler rushing attack with 92 yards.

Butler had 423 yards of total offense, but managed just one touchdown.

The Dragons were 55% on third down (6 of 11) and held Butler to 29% (4 of 14). Hutchinson sacked Wolff three times. Terry Kirksey led the defense with 10 tackles, Nikko Taylor had two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Hutchinson travels to Dodge City (2-3, 1-2) next Saturday, Oct. 8, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Reno County incumbents endorsed by VOTE FBF in statehouse races

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department will hold a vaccine clinic at Hutchinson High School on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to provide flu vaccines for USD 308 staff, their families, and students.

The flu vaccine clinic will be held in the Salthawk Activity Center Lobby located at 810 East 13th&nbsp;Avenue, Hutchinson, KS. Forms needed for the vaccine clinic can be found by visiting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usd308.com/page/health-forms" target="_blank">this link</a>&nbsp;and should be filled out before arriving at the clinic. Paper copies can be obtained in the nursing office at HHS. Attendees should also bring a copy of their insurance.

If you are unable to attend the clinic at HHS, RCHD will be visiting USD 308 school buildings through the beginning of November to allow the flu vaccine to be easy and accessible. Please contact your building for information on dates and times of flu shot clinics.

NICKERSON, Kan. — The EA309 Education Association for Nickerson USD 309 will be having its annual Chili Supper Friday, Oct. 14, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Nickerson High School football stadium. The event is before the Homecoming crowning, but right after the parade.&nbsp;

The cost is $8.50 for adults and $5.50 for children under 12. Serving will be located near the concession stand. The meal includes chili, crackers, pickles, cinnamon roll and a drink.&nbsp;

All proceeds go to the EA309 Scholarship fund that supports students from NHS who are pursuing their education degree.

Nickerson chili feed is Oct. 14

MARION, Kan. — The algae situation at Marion Reservoir has not changed from the past week as the popular lake is still under an algae watch from the toxic growth.

The watch does allow for some limited activity in the lake. All other area lakes are free from such advisories.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and will be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly. If the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.

Low water levels are still a problem at most area lakes. Cheney Reservoir is now 2.5 feet below normal pool. Harvey County East Lake is still closed to most boating because of shallow conditions.&nbsp;

Latest lake conditions as weekend arrives

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann (KS-01) released the following statement regarding his vote against a short-term continuing resolution to extend government funding until Dec. 16 in the U.S. House of Representatives:

"This is the fifth time that this Congress has passed a short-term funding bill, channeling billions of dollars to band-aid the Biden Administration’s failed policies. At a time when inflation is skyrocketing, the supply chain is still struggling to recover, and the livelihoods of Americans are at risk, Washington Democrats chose to push through a stop-gap funding bill rather than having a meaningful debate on our nation’s finances and passing a comprehensive, fiscally responsible budget. There are better ways to solve most problems than simply throwing money at them."

Mann comments on vote against spending bill

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Students from Hutchinson Community College are benefitting from a scholarship program offered by EAGLE Media and the Robert E. and Patricia Schmidt Foundation.&nbsp;

Nancy Swain, General Manager at EAGLE Media in Hutchinson, had lunch this week with Hutchinson Community College students who were awarded scholarships from the Schmidt Foundation. Bob Schmidt was the original founder of Eagle Communications, which now includes more than 30 radio stations, including Country 102.9, My 93-1 and KWBW, as well as nine community Post sites, including Hutch Post. Before his death, Bob sold the company to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, making Eagle 100% employee owned.&nbsp;

Bob and Pat Schmidt were always determined to contribute to the success and well-being of the communities they served. They believed if you give back to your community, it begins a chain reaction of good and creates a place where we can all grow and thrive. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A company with local ties to Hutchinson is celebrating a birthday today. Friday marks the 120th birthday for Archer Daniels Midland, now known as ADM.

ADM was incorporated on Sept. 30, 1902, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as a regional linseed oil business. Today, ADM has 41,000 employees serving customers in nearly 200 countries&nbsp;

“Over the past 120 years, our company has evolved from a regional startup into an irreplaceable leader providing needed nutrition to billions around the globe. ADM turns 120

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Four people were taken into custody on numerous drug charges in Hutchinson Thursday afternoon.

Police took Vernon Nusser into custody on charges of distribution and possession within 1,000 feet of a school, Robert Carter was arrested for drug possession and distribution within 1,000 feet of a school, Taryn Carter and Jacob Churchill were both arrested for drug possession.

Hutchinson police were doing a community corrections check on a residence at 19 N. Elm around 2 p.m. Thursday. A search of the room turned up drugs connected to each of the four individuals.&nbsp;

Bond for Nusser is set at $22,500, the bond for Robert Carter was set at $23,000. Taryn Carter’s bond was $5,500 and the bond for Churchill is $6,000.

Formal charges are expected to be filed next week.

Fire crews work 2 grass fires

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works is preparing to make major renovations to its underground infrastructure and the city council will be asked to take action on several related matters during Tuesday’s meeting. That includes sanitary sewer lift stations and a water line project.

The city owns and operates 33 lift stations within the sanitary sewer collection system. Most of the lift stations were built in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Since the original construction, 28 of the lift stations have been converted from wet well mounted lift stations to submersible type lift stations due to age and reliability. The plan is to convert the final five of those sites and make improvements.

The water distribution system improvements include replacement of approximately 1.3 miles of 6-inch cast iron waterline in various locations with an estimated cost of $1,205,000. The two projects are scheduled for 2023 and 2024.

Because the city is using special state funds to help pay for the costs of the project, a public hearing will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 4, during the regular agenda session. Tuesday’s Hutchinson City Council meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Hutchinson city offices.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County sales tax receipts were the highest ever recorded for the month of September, according to figures released from the Reno County Treasurer's Office.

September numbers totaled $559,819, more than $102,000 ahead of the same month last year. The figure is even higher than September of 2019 when the county received a windfall of sales tax from paying off the bonds on the correctional facility early.&nbsp;

It's also the second time the county has surpassed the $500,000 mark in 2022. Sales tax receipts have surpassed the previous year seven of the nine months of 2022.

Sales tax numbers for September reflect shopping trends for the month of July.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center will be hosting a consignment auction on Saturday, Oct. 1. Doors open at 9 a.m. with the auction at 11 a.m.&nbsp;

The auction will feature 131 works of art including paintings, drawings and prints by local and regional artists, pueblo pottery, blown glass, Kansas ceramics and more.&nbsp;

Lunch will be available on-site. Admission is free and the artwork is currently on display in the main gallery.

A preview of the artwork will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Hutchinson Art Center auction is Saturday

HAVEN, Kan. — One of the people who lost in the August Republican primary in Reno County District 5, is launching a write-in campaign.

Penelope Poitras from Haven, who was endorsed in the primary by the Service Employees International Union - SEIU <a href="http://www.seiukansas.com/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.seiukansas.com/index.html</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kansas AFL-CIO and the Wichita / Hutchinson Labor Federation <a href="https://ks.aflcio.org/wichitahutchinson-labor-federation-central-kansas-afl-cio" target="_blank">https://ks.aflcio.org/wichitahutchinson-labor-federation-central-kansas-afl-cio</a>, is trying to gain the new seat on the board for the southeastern part of the county.

Opening Night for HutchCC Fine Arts canceled

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Motorists who have very early commutes or drive through the city overnight will notice a change in the traffic signals starting Friday. According to Hutchinson Public Works, the traffic signals will remain in normal operation 24 hours a day.&nbsp;

“After some discussion with engineering consultants, we have found that it is a safer practice to have the signals run steady all night instead of being on flash,” Cecil Weible with Hutchinson Public Works said. “If you pulled up on the red side, you cannot see that the other side is yellow, so you would assume that person also had a red.”

If you see a signal flashing, it will be for a specific reason from now on.

“If they are on flash, it's because we are doing maintenance to the intersection or a safety reason if something happens to that intersection,” Weible said. “The default is for them to go on flash and treat it as a four-way stop.”

The full changeover will be completed before the overnight hours Friday.

Traffic signals in Hutchinson to operate full time starting Friday night

TOPEKA — The Kansas Republican Party will have stops in McPherson, Newton and Hutchinson as part of its statewide bus tour next month. 

The bus tour will be headlined by Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Republican congressional candidates. 

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall will speak at all stops, and other Republican leaders and candidates will participate along the tour.

The stop in McPherson is Friday, October 7th at 3:15 p.m. at the plaza at the corner of Main and Marlin. The stop in Newton is Monday, October 10th at 12:30 p.m. at the Harvey County GOP office at 423 North Main and the Hutchinson stop is the 10th as well at 2:30 p.m. at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in the yellow lot north of the racetrack.

The 6-day, 27-stop, statewide bus tour will kick off in Topeka October 5th.

Republicans to hold statewide bus tour with stops in McPherson, Newton and Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 60th Anniversary Banquet for the Hutchinson chapter of Ducks Unlimited is coming up next month.

"Ducks Unlimited is the world leader in wetlands conservation and restoration," said Tim Lackey with the local chapter. "Here locally, our Hutchinson chapter, we do an annual banquet. The funds raised in that annual banquet go toward not only national projects, but also local projects. Ducks Unlimited has done projects with McPherson Valley Wetlands, which is as close as Inman. Also, we've joined with Kansas Wildlife and Parks and done projects out at Quivira National Wetlands and also a major project that is still being completed in Great Bend at Cheyenne Bottoms."

Because of the anniversary, the group is bringing in special entertainment for the occasion.

"They're actually called the Gould Brothers, two brothers out of Minnesota that travel all around the country doing shooting exhibitions," Lackey said. "They are trick shooters. You can Youtube them and see their different videos that they have posted. They are going to come down and do about an hour long shoot right before our banquet."

That shoot will be at 5:30 p.m., with the banquet, dinner and a live auction to follow. There are only a few spots left.

"Our venue can hold 250 people and we're getting very close," said Mike Link with the chapter. "We want to make sure we have all of our long time supporters. We have supporters that have been with us for the full 60 years. We really want to advertise that hey, this thing is selling out. Unfortunately, we're probably going to be sold out in the next couple of days."

"Here locally, our Hutchinson chapter, we do an annual banquet. The funds raised in that annual banquet go toward not only national projects, but also local projects. Ducks Unlimited has done projects with McPherson Valley Wetlands, which is as close as Inman. Also, we've joined with Kansas Wildlife and Parks and done projects out at Quivira National Wetlands and also a major project that is still being completed in Great Bend at Cheyenne Bottoms."Because of the anniversary, the group is bringing in special entertainment for the occasion."They're actually called the Gould Brothers, two brothers out of Minnesota that travel all around the country doing shooting exhibitions," Lackey said. "They are trick shooters. You can Youtube them and see their different videos that they have posted. They are going to come down and do about an hour long shoot right before our banquet."That shoot will be at 5:30 p.m., with the banquet, dinner and a live auction to follow. There are only a few spots left."Our venue can hold 250 people and we're getting very close," said Mike Link with the chapter. "We want to make sure we have all of our long time supporters. We have supporters that have been with us for the full 60 years. We really want to advertise that hey, this thing is selling out. MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) has purchased&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=46289c584c&amp;e=3213e3277a" target="_blank">Shop Kansas Farms&nbsp;</a>(SKF), an online community that connects consumers with Kansas farmers and ranchers.&nbsp; “Kansas Farm Bureau is excited about this partnership and what it means to current and future users of Shop Kansas Farms,” Terry Holdren, CEO of Kansas Farm Bureau, says. “Shop Kansas Farms was born during COVID-19 shutdowns by Farm Bureau member Rick McNary and has continued to provide a way for consumers and farmers to connect over food and farming. Together, with Rick, we plan to build the platform out and help communities create local food systems.” McNary will remain a driving force behind SKF and will focus on things like consulting with communities who want to develop local food systems. “Kansas Farm Bureau has been instrumental in the success of Shop Kansas Farms from the beginning,” Rick McNary, creator of Shop Kansas Farms, says. “Staff provided help as administrators on the Facebook group and were sounding boards as the viral community took off. The Hutchinson NAACP's Annual Freedom Fund Dinner, with presenting sponsor Cargill, is coming up Saturday, October 1 at 7 p.m. in the Gallery Theatre at Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Former Johnson County Community College professor Dr. Carmaletta Williams will be the keynote speaker.&nbsp;Special music will be provided by The Hutch Clique.

Freedom Fund Dinner is Saturday, get tickets now

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County taxpayers can now get their questions answered at a new kiosk in the outer lobby of the Reno County Annex.&nbsp; 

The kiosk has information about all departments located in the annex and can be very helpful in reviewing items required by the various departments.&nbsp; 

If you want to know what paperwork it takes to title a vehicle, or need to know who to contact regarding the sale of your property or need information about recording a deed?&nbsp; These and many more questions can be answered by using the kiosk.

This Friday, September 30th&nbsp;and next Friday October 7th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., come by to see the new kiosk and have a bag of popcorn as staff at the annex will be there to show you how it works.
