HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Central Christian School will be performing&nbsp;Timeless, The Corrie ten Boom Musical&nbsp;on Sunday, November 6, at 3:00 p.m. 

Based on the&nbsp;book&nbsp;The Hiding&nbsp;Place, this musical is the story of Corrie ten Boom. Her true account of courage, forgiveness, and love in Nazi-occupied Holland has inspired Christians for decades.

Central Christian is honored to bring this powerful story to their stage and believes that it will encourage the community to trust and obey God's Word, to love others sacrificially, and to forgive their enemies.

Timeless&nbsp;was written by the California-based writing team of Ron Rogalski and Kris Bromberger of Faith Based Musicals. This performance will be one of the first since its California debut in 2020. This is a production of the Central Christian High School Choir students, along with help from high school art classes and several adult volunteers.

CCS to perform musical November 6

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho asked for an update on the Atrium Hotel situation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday.

"Izzy Rivera, building inspector and myself have been in contact with Joshua Joseph with regard to the Atrium," said Interim City Manager Gary Meagher. "Right now, he did offer the building to the city. There's been some prior discussions, I know. In this particular offer, he was offering to sell the building to the city for $2 million and then he would demolish it, if that's what we wanted, or whatever it might be."

"It would be my hope that we do not give him a damn dime for that building," Piros de Carvalho said. "But, I don't know how everyone else feels."

The general consensus seemed to be that something does need to be done, but more likely by a future developer than through use of city funds.

"Maybe there's a way to get two people together," said council member Sara Bagwell. "Maybe the Chamber of Commerce or somebody can work with Joseph to see if there is anybody else that would be interested in the property. Maybe going that route would probably be more reasonable."

Meagher is going to continue work to try to find someone who will do something with the property going forward, hopefully with as little City involvement as practical.

Atrium owner fails to persuade mayor with latest offer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The dry conditions continued in the Hutchinson area during the month of September.

According to figures released by the National Weather Service Hutchinson received just 0.86 of an inch of rainfall in September. Normal rainfall for the month is 2.01 inches. It’s the fourth straight month that rainfall has been below normal.&nbsp;

Temperatures remain above average as well. The average high for the month was 88.5 degrees. Normal average high is 83. Hutchinson hit the century mark three times on consecutive days between September 18th and the 20th.

The last month of significant rainfall in Hutchinson was in May when 7.33 inches of precipitation fell.

Still dry in September

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After being away for three years due to the pandemic, the Ulster Project will return to Hutchinson in July of 2023.

The project brings Catholic and Protestant youth from both Hutchinson and Portadown, Northern Ireland together to find common ground and build fellowship. The Ulster Project was started in 1975 by Rev. Kerry Waterstone, a priest in Northern Ireland, in order to provide a safe place in North America for Northern Irish teenagers to discuss the climate of&nbsp; “The Troubles” that was facing them at home.&nbsp;

A meeting for potential teens and families is scheduled for Sunday Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at 201 E. Sherman. The meeting is for parents and students who are currently freshman through juniors.&nbsp;

Applications are currently available and must be in by Nov. 3 with interviews happening shortly after.

Ulster Project to return in 2023

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved applying to take out money from the state's low-interest revolving loan fund for improvements for the wastewater collection system, the wastewater treatment plant, and the water distribution system.&nbsp;

The loan applications will include funding for the following improvements:

1. Sewer collection system improvements consisting of the replacement of self-priming wet-well mounted pumps and related accessories with submersible non-clog pumps.

Buried valve vaults including sump pits. Coating of new and existing structures in contact with wastewater and/or corrosive gases. Bypass connections after the valve vaults, receptacles and manual transfer switches for operation from a portable generator, ultrasonic level indicators and grease control by mixed-flush or wet well cleaning control systems. The anticipated amount for the collection system improvements will be $2,750,000.

2. Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements consisting of headworks grit removal equipment replacement with an estimated amount of $820,000.

"Our&nbsp;Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed to handle 8.3 million gallons a day," said Public Works Director Brian Clennan. "That's just normal, average daily flow. Our average daily flow is anywhere from 4 to 5 million gallons a day. We're sized well for what we're seeing. We've got the ability to grow and send more wastewater to that facility."

3. Water distribution system improvements consisting of the replacement of approximately 1.3 miles of 6-inch cast iron waterline in various locations generally bound between K-61 and Town/1st and 9th with an estimated amount of $1,205,000. This is actually less replacement than is recommended year to year.

"The city used the&nbsp;American Water Works Association's build no longer pipe replacement modeling tool to determine how much water line we need to be replacing every year and in 2023, that model says we need to be replacing 3.3 miles of water line," Clennan said. "We're going to only replace 1.3 miles in 2023. That's purely due to the amount of revenue we've got available. That's the amount we can afford."

That's why the council talked about raising water rates as part of their budgeting process.

"In 2024, we're looking at replacing 1.5 miles, in 2025, 2.25 miles, in 2026, 2.25 miles and in 2027, 2.7 miles of water line."

Sixty-two percent of the city's water pipes are cast iron, that accounts for 94% of water main breaks.

Hutchinson City Council approves wastewater, water projects at Tuesday meeting

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man accused in a violent knife attack made his first court appearance in the case Monday.

Julian Gonzalez, 38, Newton, was charged with attempted murder in the 1st&nbsp;degree, aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated endangering a child, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just after 6 p.m. Sept. 28, police were dispatched to a vehicle accident with a disturbance at Murdock and West Street in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch.&nbsp;

At the scene, officers located several citizens providing first aid to the victim. Two citizens played a vital role by putting themselves in harm’s way to subdue the suspect which allowed other witnesses to render aid.

One witness utilized her vehicle by driving it toward the suspect identified later as Gonzalez, resulting in the suspect disengaging. Another witness who was carrying a concealed firearm held Gonzalez at gunpoint until officers arrived on the scene.

Investigators learned Gonzalez intentionally used his white 2010 Hyundai Elantra to strike a gray 2018 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by the victim. The Chevy Cruze also had a 28-year-old woman, a 4-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy in the car.

Gonzalez then exited his vehicle and began breaking the Chevy windows out with nunchucks. The adult victims were getting the juvenile victims out of the vehicle when Gonzalez began stabbing the 30-year-old man in the lower body, according to Ditch.

A few citizens gave commands at gunpoint to Gonzalez to stop and other citizens provided first aid to the victim until officers arrived. The adult female victim received minor lacerations from exiting the vehicle. All victims and the suspect were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Attorneys in the case are scheduled to discuss it further October 17.&nbsp; Gonzalez remains in the Sedgwick County Jail on a $250,000 bond.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Carey Park Golf Course is once again hosting a state championship tournament this year.

The course will host the girls 3, 2, 1-A tournament Oct. 17 and 18. The tournament is needing volunteers to help with starters, live trackers, and scorekeepers.&nbsp;

Carey Park looking for state golf volunteers

LYONS, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation announced Monday that work is expected to start later this month on a $4.3 million replacement of a K-14 bridge in Rice County.

The project involves the Cow Creek drainage bridge about 10 miles north of the Reno County line — between Sterling and Lyons. The work also will include grading and surfacing. The construction is expected to be completed around the end of June 2023.

The new bridge will be built just off the existing K-14 alignment. Motorists will continue to use the existing bridge during the project.

During the work, motorists will be directed to drive at a reduced speed through the work zone. Later in the project, traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by traffic signals.

King Construction of Hesston is the primary contractor for the $4,321,593 project.

It's a great day to be in beautiful Downtown Hutchinson and sample fantastic chili and soup. 

It's a day the whole family can enjoy and you get to vote for the Best Soup and the Best Chili.&nbsp; The event starts at 11:30 a.m. and goes until the chili and soup are gone.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More Hutchinson firefighters were part of a crew swap in California on Friday. During their deployment, they assisted with clearing trees and participated in a community event in helping repair bicycles. They also assisted with initial attack on the Irie fire midway through their deployment. 

They were relieved by Hutchinson Fire Fighters Brent Fisher, Danny Chambers, and Michael Sooter. That group started their 14-day assignment on October 1st.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sheridan was most recently Chief Operations Officer of Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Before moving to Kansas, Sheridan was CEO of Barstow Community Hospital in Barstow, California.

Newton/North Newton Planning Commission meets tonight

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson Planning Commission will have a special meeting today at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall located at 2 South Main. 

This is an organizational meeting to set their regular time going forward to the first Monday of each month. 

City Hall is now available for that meeting because the South Hutchinson City Council has moved their meetings to the second and fourth Mondays of each month.

LENORA, Kan. —Nex-Tech announced today that it is undergoing a rebrand featuring a new logo.

Rural Telephone was founded as a cooperative in February 1951. The cooperative was formed by a group of farmers and businessmen with an elected Board of Trustees who wanted better telephone service for the rural areas of Northwest Kansas. By 1999, Rural Telephone had enlarged its service area and added multiple technology services. This prompted the rebranding of the cooperative under the “Nex-Tech” identity.

The next two decades brought a tremendous amount of progress and diversification for the company.&nbsp;

The new logo is a stylized “N” with one of the legs created with a “T.” The result is an easily identifiable visual that not only features the company’s initials, but also makes clear Nex-Tech’s vital foundation of technology. The traditional black and red that harken back to Rural Telephone days remain the primary logo colors. In order to denote Nex-Tech’s various technology services and business segments, the new logo implements additional colors to represent each business segment.

Nex-Tech has already begun the process of updating signs and apparel. 

January 1, 2023 marks the projected date for a new website launch. At that time, the TV Now, Nex-Tech Directory, and Nex-Tech Classifieds apps will also be updated. 

Implementation of the new logo will continue through 2023, with all major components to be completed by March 31, 2023.

Weis named Director of Marketing and Communications for HRMC

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College are collaborating for their annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hutchinson Art Center located at 405 N Washington Street.

Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College are “raising hunger awareness through art,” at the Empty Bowls fundraiser supporting the Reno County Food Bank. The event has been a collaboration between the two art departments, along with support from numerous community sponsors.

Hutchinson High School students Mystichequie Earlywine-Gutierrez, Jason Manke, and Tia Hines have been working together with teachers Julia Johnson and Kenna Teel to advertise the event. Earlywine-Gutierrez and Manke are graphics students, while Hines is using the event as her senior International Baccalaureate project.

“It feels nice to be involved with the event. The creation of the logo took a while, and I wanted to work on it to show that we are helping people in our community,” said Earlywine-Gutierrez about helping to advertise the event.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

There is a $10 suggested donation to enter the event, which will provide guests with a hand-made ceramic bowl created by HHS and HCC students, as well as food provided by Traveling Bowl. All proceeds will go directly to the Reno County Food Bank.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College are collaborating for their annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hutchinson Art Center located at 405 N Washington Street.Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College are “raising hunger awareness through art,” at the Empty Bowls fundraiser supporting the Reno County Food Bank. The event has been a collaboration between the two art departments, along with support from numerous community sponsors.Hutchinson High School students Mystichequie Earlywine-Gutierrez, Jason Manke, and Tia Hines have been working together with teachers Julia Johnson and Kenna Teel to advertise the event. Earlywine-Gutierrez and Manke are graphics students, while Hines is using the event as her senior International Baccalaureate project.“It feels nice to be involved with the event. The creation of the logo took a while, and I wanted to work on it to show that we are helping people in our community,” said Earlywine-Gutierrez about helping to advertise the event.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a $10 suggested donation to enter the event, which will provide guests with a hand-made ceramic bowl created by HHS and HCC students, as well as food provided by Traveling Bowl. All proceeds will go directly to the Reno County Food Bank.

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven City Council will discuss the pay rate for an Assistant Public Works Director at their meeting tonight. Steve Carmichael is expected to take the position.

Also on the agenda is discussion of having the Mayor fill in for Public Works while they go through the hiring process for a full time leader in that department.

There will be three executive sessions as part of the meeting, one to discuss applications for Maintenance Technician and Public Works Director, another to discuss the performance of the Assistant City Clerk and a third to discuss the pool matter with legal counsel.

The Haven City Council meeting is tonight at 7 p.m. at 120 South Kansas in Haven.

The Lodge is asking for sweatshirts and sweatpants it can give out to those using their services as the weather continues to cool.

If you'd like to help, you can drop off&nbsp;sweatshirts and sweatpants at 200 West 6th, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 400 West 2nd Suite C after 5 p.m., seven days a week.

According to the agency, over 80 youth in Reno County have asked for a Big and are waiting to be matched.

A few hours each month including youth in your everyday activities is all it takes to make a difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;

An investment of time in a child means that there is someone outside of their home who believes they are worthwhile and possess potential.&nbsp;

There are six Zoom info sessions this month for those interested in becoming a Big. First <a href="https://bbbs.tfaforms.net/4840755">fill out a volunteer form</a> and then schedule your session.

Big help needed in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Reno County Correctional Facility inmate died Saturday.

According to a release from the Reno County Sheriff's Office, 36-year-old Kyle Allen Skeen was booked on charges stemming from a local warrant on Friday.

When jail staff came around to serve breakfast Saturday morning, they found Skeen unresponsive. Deputies then entered the cell and began lifesaving measures, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator. Hutchinson Fire also responded, and Skeen was unable to be resuscitated.

As is agency protocol, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in, along with the Reno County Coroner's Office.&nbsp;

Any further inquiries on the death may be made to the KBI.

Man dies in Reno County Correctional Facility Saturday, KBI to investigate

Reno County Commissioner Ron Hirst said the Board of County Commissioners looked at the water and sewer situation near Yoder for a long time before deciding to raise rates.

"We've known this since the tests have come up well over a year ago, that we've had a situation down there," Hirst said. "We're limited to where District 101 can put the well, because of the water limitations, as well as the engineering that goes in it and the discovery of what is in the best interest and will make the most sense for delivering potable water that's safe."

At this point, bringing water down from another part of the county looks like the best option.

"At the present time, we're looking at some engineering with regard to the costs involved in receiving water and purchasing water from Hutchinson," Hirst said. 

A policy decision needs to be made that if there is going to have to be boring under the highway and the riverbed anyway, does it make sense at this time or not to bring more than just 101's needs across, to allow for future economic development.

"We have about three industrial areas," Hirst said. "We've got HABIT (Hutch Airbase Industrial Tract), we have the new property purchased to do an industrial facility on and then we have the present industrial in the City of Hutchinson. Sometimes, we have a tendency to just try to handle fires as they come up and solve those fires and I don't mean the kind that's heat. It kind of brought up to me that maybe we need to look at doing it all at once, rather than to bore twice underneath the river. I don't know whether time-wise, that works, whether the engineering works. We've set aside some economic development money out of the ARPA funds for infrastructure for the new industrial tract. I don't know how that will work, or whether there's even a possibility, but sometime we need to look at how we can do that. It depends a lot on the time KDHE gives the county to solve the nitrate problem."

Public Works Director Don Brittain said previously that he thought the water from Hutchinson, if they go that way, would possibly be blended with water from the 101 well to decrease cost to residents of that district.
