HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Post secondary success information for all school districts in Kansas was just released and Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman said their stats were really good.

"It is actually a look at two years after your graduates have left your building," Couchman said. "There's lots of ways to measure success of a student after graduation. They are basically looking at, after two years, how many of your students have earned an industry-recognized certification while in high school? Sometimes, you know, you get like a welding certificate while you're in high school. That would count.&nbsp; A student, that maybe has earned an associate of arts degree in two years, or I guess it's possible to earn a B.S. in two years and then also, the last one would be, if they are still remaining in college in the two years that they are out after school."

Remember that this would be the class whose senior year was cut short by COVID.

"We are constantly improving," Couchman said. "What we are really proud of, is we have almost hit all of the benchmarks the state department has said is the vision. That is a graduation rate of 95%, an effective rate of 70 to 75%. The effective rate means you take your graduation rate, ours in 2020 was 95.3%. Of those, what percentage are successful after two years?"

That number is at 75.9% with the effective rate at 72.4%. The five-year average for Buhler is 69.4%, which puts Buhler in the top tier of districts in the state in these measures.

Buhler reaching benchmarks in post-secondary success

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2022 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is Saturday, October 8 at Hutchinson Community College.

"We are so excited that we can gather in person," said Fe Vorderlandwehr with the Alzheimer's Association. "We, obviously are going to be as safe as we possibly can. There's just something about everybody being together and walking and just sharing this as a community. We're excited to come to Hutchinson."

More than 6.5 million Americans  are living with Alzheimer’s disease – 55,000 right here in Kansas.

"There's a pipeline now, of just potential new treatments that are offering hope,"&nbsp;Vorderlandwehr said. "It was last week we saw some promises with a new drug called&nbsp;lecanemab. We're going to hear more about what they are finding in those clinical trials in November. Hopefully, we'll just have even more options for families living with this disease."

The event has above average pre-registrations heading into Saturday.

"There's 181 individuals registered for Saturday's event," Vorderlandwehr said earlier this week. "Registrations are still coming in. So far, the community has raised $18,400 on our goal toward $25,000."&nbsp; 

The route on the Blue Dragon Walking Trail will be open from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with the&nbsp;Promise Garden Ceremony at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

Alzheimer's Walk is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a statement from the Republican primary winners in Reno County that they will not be attending the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber and NAACP candidate forum on October 11, the Chamber CEO has asked for an opportunity to meet with them before the event.

In an email obtained by Hutch Post, Chamber CEO Debra Teufel asked for consideration from the group.

&nbsp; “The Chamber Executive Committee this week, after meeting with the NAACP partners and hearing their position about this cohosted event, agreed that the best and most fair and equitable way to hold the candidate forum was to err on the side of inclusivity rather than exclusion," Teufel said. Under Kansas law, write in candidates are considered a valid option for candidacy.

"Our members and citizens deserve to hear all of the voices," Teufel said. "In addition, one might argue that hearing from all candidates actually elevates the platform of those who won the primary. I hope you will reconsider your position on participating but if not, we still plan to hold the forum at this time."

Teufel will be out of town this weekend for her son's wedding. "When I return to Hutchinson on the morning &nbsp;of&nbsp;October 11th, I would be more than happy to meet with you or anyone else who has concerns and would invite NAACP to join me," Teufel said. "The stage will be set and the forum held in the most fair manner possible to all concerned who choose to participate."

It's worth noting that in one of the contested races with an on the ballot winner from each party in the primary, the County Commission District 4 race, Republican candidate Mark Reese did not attend the Chamber forum for County Commission candidates prior to the primary, as his primary was uncontested.

Reese's race against Michael Jobe and the House District 102 and 104 races will have both a Republican and a Democrat on the ballot that won primaries to get there. 

Hutch Post is not aware at this time of any other scheduled opportunities for both on the ballot candidates to speak at the same event, if the Republican primary winners stick with their decision not to attend on Tuesday.

Chamber CEO willing to meet with primary winners before event

NICKERSON, Kan. — One person was injured in a two vehicle accident near Nickerson Thursday evening.&nbsp;

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Department, 58-year-old Michael Moore of Haven was riding his motorcycle northwest on K-14 when 19-year-old Anthony Della Salla of Sterling attempted to pass a vehicle while driving southeast on K-14.&nbsp;

Della Salla did not have enough room and failed to see the oncoming motorcycle. Della Salla chose to take the opposite ditch to avoid a head-on collision with Moore. Moore attempted to avoid the accident and laid the motorcycle on its side ending up in the ditch. Moore was transported to a local hospital with major injuries. Della Salla was not injured but was cited for unsafe passing.&nbsp;

The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. one mile southeast of Nickerson near Riverton Rd.

Haven man injured in motorcycle accident

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County taxpayers will be able to get some hands-on information about the new kiosk in the outer lobby of the Reno County Annex Friday afternoon.&nbsp;

The kiosk has information about all departments located in the annex and can be very helpful in reviewing items required by the various departments.&nbsp;

If you want to know what paperwork it takes to title a vehicle, or need to know who to contact regarding the sale of your property or need information about recording a deed?&nbsp; These and many more questions can be answered by using the kiosk.

The information session will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can come by to see the new kiosk and have a bag of popcorn as staff at the annex will be there to show you how it works.

Another chance to try new county kiosk is Friday afternoon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced that starting Monday they will begin the annual waterline flushing and fire hydrant maintenance program.&nbsp;

Flushing water lines is a normal, preventive maintenance procedure that helps improve water quality. Fire hydrants are operated, inspected, and maintained during the flushing process to ensure that all hydrants on the system are in good working condition.

Some areas may experience discolored or cloudy water during this time, but this will only be temporary, and the water is safe to use.&nbsp;Allow the water to run from a faucet without a strainer such as a bathtub faucet or outdoor spigot for several minutes and it will eventually return to a clear color.

&nbsp;Public Works Department personnel will be flushing Monday through Thursday from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from about 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in various parts of the city. Weather and emergency waterline break dependent schedules will be posted on the City’s social media pages. If the discoloration lasts longer than a few hours or you have any questions, please contact the Water Department at (620) 694-1900.

Hutchinson water line and hydrant flushing program starts Monday

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission will meet October 20 at 4:30 p.m. at the Reno County Public Works Facility at 600 Scott Boulevard in South Hutchinson.

On the agenda for the Planning Commission is a final plat subdivision request for a proposed six-lot residential subdivision located approximately 600 feet east of the intersection of S. Willison Road and E. Silver Lake Road. 

Also to be considered is a request for a conditional use permit to establish an indoor RV storage facility along with a related office building on land zoned AG at the northeast corner of S. Willison Road and E. Boundary Road at 25118 S. Willison Road.

In addition, the commission will look at a request for a conditional use permit to establish a music and special event venue on land zoned R-1 – Rural Residential District on the west side of Old K-61 Highway North, approximately one half mile south of the intersection of Old K-61 Highway North and E 69th Avenue at 6311 Old K-61 Highway North.

Those items will have potential public comment with them. Comments must be limited to 5 minutes.

There will be two items to be discussed that will not have public comment on the 20th, one is a text amendment to Article 3-105(3) of the Subdivision Regulations regarding the minimum and maximum acreage permitted for an agricultural lot split application.

The other is a text amendment to Article 13 of the Zoning Regulations regarding the minimum yard requirements for each zoning district.

IOWA CITY — <a href="https://www.thegazette.com/iowa-basketball/iowa-commit-ava-jones-not-expected-to-play-basketball-again-after-serious-injuries-from-july-crash/">The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports</a> that University of Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder told&nbsp;the university’s Presidential Committee on Athletics on Thursday that she received a call the day before about the condition of Nickerson High star and Iowa commit Ava Jones.

Bluder told the committee that new MRI scans showed that Ava had torn all four major ligaments in both of her knees — ACL, MCL, PCL, and LCL.&nbsp;

Such injuries are likely to prevent Jones from playing again, according to Bluder.

Jones and her family were hit by a car July 5 while in Louisville, Kentucky for an AAU basketball tournament. Her father Trey, died from his injuries and her mother and brother were also hit.

The man police say admitted to taking hydrocodone before hitting the Jones family has pled not guilty in the case.&nbsp;Thirty-three-year-old Michael Hurley&nbsp;was already on probation for drug possession and drug use in Indiana at the time of the crash.

Reno, Harvey, Rice, Kingman and McPherson counties are among 67 counties that are in a drought emergency. Eleven other counties are in a warning status and 27 are in a watch status.&nbsp;

This action was recommended by Connie Owen, Director of the Kansas Water Office and Chair of the Governor’s Drought Response Team. Much of Kansas has experienced above-normal temperatures dating back to the previous April, with precipitation averaging well below normal for many of those same locations over that same timeframe. In some parts of Kansas, these precipitation deficit conditions have existed since the latter part of 2021. The outlooks from now through December favor above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation for nearly all portions of Kansas, meaning drought conditions could persist and expand over the next several months.

Through an interagency agreement between the Kansas Water Office, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Kansas Division of Emergency Management, counties in emergency stage are eligible for emergency use of water from certain state fishing lakes. These counties also become eligible for water in some federal reservoirs.

Individuals and communities need to contact the Kansas Water Office for a water supply request before making any withdrawals from lakes. These requests will in turn be referred to the appropriate office to obtain necessary permits to withdraw requested water.

Central Kansas still under drought emergency

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The opening reception for the new exhibits at the Hutchinson Art Center is Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"We're putting up our members show, which is an annual exhibit that we do for all of the artists who support the Hutchinson Art Center and are members with us," said Jace Chambers with the Art Center. We are deeply troubled by the overt politicization of the Reno County Chamber’s October candidates debates.

The Hutchinson Chamber has inexplicably shifted its long-standing debate policy and is now providing a platform to candidates already rejected by the voters of Reno County. Rather than abide by the outcome of the August primary election, the Chamber has revised the rules to the benefit of insider candidates and those preferred by the Chamber.

It should be noted, the revision of their rules was done without any communication, dialogue or input from any Republican candidates or any winners of the contested August primaries.

We were genuinely looking forward for this opportunity of a fair exchange of ideas, amongst candidates on the general election ballot, however, we now know this is not possible with the bias of the Hutch Chamber and their partners.

This has left us with no other decision but to boycott this sham of a candidate debate. We will not be attending or participating in the October 11th candidate debates.

Our group will be working on finding alternative sponsorship, a new debate venue, and most importantly, an event that respects and honors the voters’ decisions in the Democrat and Republican primary election of August 2nd.

Republican primary winners will not attend Chamber debate

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man has been arrested after a domestic disturbance in the city overnight.

Hutchinson Police report that 43-year-old Sonny Bray was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery and aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

Police overheard a disturbance while handling a call nearby and it was determined that there was enough evidence to take Bray into custody. At that time Bray tried to resist arrest and tried to get into a physical altercation.

He is being held in the Reno County Correctional Facility on a bond of $229,000. Formal charges are expected to be filed in the coming days.

KDOT awards September bids

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Harlan Depew with Reno County said the work on the courthouse dome is substantially complete.

"There were four scopes of work happening simultaneously," according to Depew.

Window restoration is 98% complete, earthquake repairs are 98% complete. The change order to replace the roof substrate on the dome is substantially complete as well. Exterior weatherization is 95% complete.

Windows and interior work are now down to making final adjustments, some touch up work, and prepping for a final punch by the architect.

The last of the limestone has been hoisted back up on the dome.  They are planning to have the final stones set, leveled, and ready for grouting by the end of this week.  The remaining weatherization will be happening over the next several weeks and the scaffolding should be starting to come down as they work their way from the top down on these final details.

Total cost of all scopes including change orders was $3,942,839.04. The contractor has been paid $3,727,182.15 so far. Insurance has reimbursed $1,159,126. The county balance remaining is $215,656.89. The net cost to the county after insurance reimbursement is $2,783,713.04.

Half-day camps offer third through fifth graders the chance to learn about our solar system and about exploration of the moon through hands-on science and teamwork activities. Fifth and sixth grade students can create their own life form and explore the possibilities of environments suitable for life beyond earth or enjoy camps with field trips that show science in action.

Cosmosphere’s overnight camps begin at seventh grade and continue through 12th grade. Middle and high schoolers meet camp alumni who are now aerospace professionals and enjoy astronaut training activities such as piloting aircraft, scuba, and collaborative science and engineering challenges. A simulated space mission using Cosmosphere’s authentic Mission Control and Astralis capsule is a peak learning experience. Excitement over the opportunities in Cosmosphere camps appears to be growing, based on high numbers of early registrations.

Registration underway for Cosmosphere camps

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Theatre Department will present Shakespeare’s Macbeth October 7-9. 

The show will be held at 7:00 p.m. on October 7-8 and at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 9 at the Stringer Fine Arts Center B.J. Warner Recital Hall on the HutchCC campus. 

Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for non-HutchCC students and will be available nightly prior to each performance.

Macbeth is a tragedy written around 1606 by William Shakespeare. Set primarily in Scotland, it is a tale of malice, matrimony and murder that tells the story of one couple’s obsession with power — and their guilt after doing the unthinkable.

The production will be directed by Deidre Mattox, HutchCC’s Director of Theatre.&nbsp;

Macbeth on HutchCC stage starting Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded Fund for Reno County grants totaling $59,800 to six nonprofit organizations in July and September.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. Grants represent an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding or an opportunity that needs a bit of local support to leverage resources for the community.

Proposals for the grants are accepted year-round, with awards decided in January, March, May, July, September and November.

The following organizations received grants:

Family Community Theatre, $15,000:&nbsp;Grant funding will support the replacement and upgrade of the front panel of the Flag Theatre's marquee, which was damaged in a recent storm. The new panel will be digital and allow for more effective use of the marquee for publicizing Family Community Theatre's shows and community events, and it will also allow the theater space to share messages welcoming groups to town.

Guardians of the Children-Salt City, $5,300:&nbsp;Guardians of the Children aims to recognize and react to child abuse and to educate the public to do the same. Through their advocacy, they create a safer environment for abused children and provide strength and support to families in crisis. Grant funds will be used toward production of promotional/educational materials as well as costs associated with monthly outings and celebrations for children "adopted" by Guardians of the Children and travel costs associated with monthly visits to the children and their families, building trusting relationships.

Healthy Families of Reno County, $9,500:&nbsp;Funding will provide Kansas Children’s Service League staff training specific to the newly adopted Healthy Families curriculum, which helps the staff effectively address the developmental needs of a wider age range of children and their families that the program now serves. Funding also allows for the purchase of two tablets for use by staff in the office, on home visits and during group experiences.

Hutchinson Breakfast Lions Club, $5,000:&nbsp;In 1925,&nbsp;Helen Keller asked Lions Clubs to be knights for the blind, and ever since, eyesight has been a focus of all Lions Clubs. Grant funds will be used by the Hutchinson Breakfast Lions Club to purchase a new piece of equipment called a Spot Screener, which is used by school nurses as they perform eye exams on students throughout Reno County.

RSVP-The Volunteer Center, $15,000:&nbsp;The Volunteer Center has provided free tax form preparation for qualified community members through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for 48 years. In 2022, volunteers prepared 1,279 federal tax returns and 1,212 state tax returns. Funding will cover the cost of replacing 10 outdated laptops, allowing VITA volunteers to effectively provide this service to Reno County families with low to moderate incomes.

Salthawk Community Support, $10,000:&nbsp;Salthawk Community Support is a ministry program of Trinity United Methodist Church and receives volunteer and financial support from other local churches and community members in addition to grant funding. The goal of Salthawk Community Support is to work together to remove barriers to education for students at Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Middle School-8 through mentoring, character development activities and financial education alongside offering basic needs supplies. This is year one of a three-year $10,000 per year grant.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, collaboration and innovative leadership to strengthen Reno County communities. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $93 million to organizations.

Community foundation awards more than $59K in grants

RICE COUNTY — The date has changed for the road opening and&nbsp; permanent road closure east of Sterling for the Rice County portion of the K-14 realignment project.

KDOT said Wednesday that the changes will now take place Friday.

The section of 17th&nbsp;Road between Avenue U and Avenue V will be open to traffic.

The stretch of 18th&nbsp;Road between Avenue U and Avenue V will be closed.

The closure of 18th&nbsp;Road will be permanent, and cul-de-sacs will be constructed at the location.

This Kansas Department of Transportation realignment project started in the spring of 2021. This a 15-mile, $81.7 million realignment of K-14. The work stretches from Hutchinson, to Nickerson, to Sterling. The project is expected to be completed by June 16, 2023. Bob Bergkamp Construction Co. Inc., of Wichita, is the primary contractor.

During the work, traffic will continue to use the existing K-14/96 alignment in Reno and Rice counties.

The Reno County portion of the realignment will be from about 4.5 miles southeast of Nickerson northwest to the Reno/Rice county line. The length is a little over 7 miles.

The Rice County portion of the realignment will be from the Reno/Rice county line to just north of the K-96/Avenue T junction. The length is about 8 miles.

RENO COUNTY—Two women were injured in an accident just before 4 p.m. Wednesday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Ford Taurus driven by&nbsp; Shirley&nbsp;Schrag, 72, Buhler, was westbound on U.S. 50 two miles east of Hutchinson.

The driver attempted to make a u-turn and struck a 2000 GMC Sierra driven by Oletia&nbsp;Barker, 56, Hutchinson.

EMS transported&nbsp;Schrag and Barker to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

2 Reno County women hospitalized after crash during u-turn

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce and NAACP have decided to expand the participation of the candidates forum scheduled for Oct. 11 at the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

The goal of the event is to engage the candidates on a set of topics of importance to the public policy work of the respective organizations, and to provide a means for members and the community to have a better sense of the policy positions of all candidates. In recent weeks, both the Chamber and the NAACP Hutchinson have listened to dialogue, discussion, and deliberation regarding the format for invited participation in the forum. Following an Oct. 4 meeting, a joint decision by both organizations was made to broaden the invitation list to all state representative and county commission primary winners, and those who have declared publicly their intentions for write-in candidacy.&nbsp;

“This decision carefully considered the input from our members and the community. Our goal is to allow forum attendees to hear all perspectives,” Chamber President/CEO, Debra Teufel, said. “The board leadership of both organizations agree that this is the most equitable way to ensure that the public and our respective members can hear the important positions of all candidates in advance of the November general election.”&nbsp;

State representatives to be invited include: 101st district candidate Joe Seiwert, 102nd district candidates Jason Probst and John Whitesel, 104th district candidates Paul Waggoner and Garth Strand, and 114th district candidate Michael Murphy. Running in District 1 in the County Commission race is primary election winner Randall (Randy) Parks and declared write-in candidate Cris Corey, District 4 candidates Michael Jobe and Mark Reese, and District 5 primary election winner Don Bogner and declared write-in candidate Penelope Poitras.&nbsp;

Candidate forum expanded

MCPHERSON COUNTY — US 56 in McPherson County west of McPherson was closed until just before noon Wednesday, as a semi was in the ditch and the safest way to remove it was to close the road. There are no injuries from the accident.

According to a release from McPherson Fire, just after 3:30 a.m., firefighters were sent to Highway 56 and 10th Avenue in Conway for a hazmat incident. A tractor trailer was on its side on the south side of the road. there was no threat to the public.

Officers rerouted US 56 traffic westbound from 81 Bypass and Kansas in the city of McPherson, and eastbound from Plum Ave at US 56 on the McPherson-Rice County line until they got the trailer back upright.

Fire was released from the scene at 11:58 a.m. Wednesday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Thursday, October 6, the Family Community Theatre will bring "The Miracle Worker" to the Flag Theatre's stage. 

"The Miracle Worker, everybody refers to it as the Helen Keller story," said director Ben Jones. "Helen Keller is deaf-blind. This is the story of how she gained access to language. It's really centered around her teacher, Annie Sullivan who, very young, leaves school in Boston, goes down to Alabama and really pioneers how we teach individuals that are deaf-blind, because prior to this, those people who were deaf-blind were sent to asylums for mental purposes."

There is one disabled person in the cast this time around.

"Kyleigh from Haven High School, who also happens to be deaf," Jones said. "To share a wonderful story like this, from that community is really nice. It's a nice input to the cast and has been fun to teach cast ASL and that sort of thing. It's been really nice to have that."

Deaf audience members will also be able to come and enjoy the performance.

"We will have full ASL interpretation, which will actually be on stage with the actors, for audiences every performance this weekend," Jones said. "They are paid, because they are professionals, to do this. It is not cheap, but it is very well worth the cost. For a story that really tells a story of that community, we felt it important to have inclusion and accessibility for everyone and not just pigeonholing them to one night."

Hesston High Volleyball to hold Jones Family Fundraiser

Kan. — Sue Wray with BrightHouse said they started a new program Monday to help victims of domestic violence who have pets. They said they couldn't help with that part before.

"National statistics indicate about 50% of the people who need help with domestic violence situations don't come to get help, because they have pets that they can't abandon," Wray said. "They just can't bring themselves to do it. We have had experience here that when people do leave and leave their pets behind, the abuse is horrific. It's just terrible."

BrightHouse has received outside money to help.

"We got a grant from the Stallman Foundation, which is a local community-based grant, that was set up to try to minimize cruelty to children and animals," Wray said. "We are going to use that to help people who need to escape a domestic violence situation, but they have an animal, or animals, that they need to protect, as well. We're working with Prairie Vista and we'll be able to offer medical care for the animals, if they need it, or vaccinations. Sometimes, people in these situations, they can't keep up with the medical care that their animal needs, obviously. We'll be able to offer vaccinations and we'll be able to offer boarding."
