USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson issued a statement Friday after a gun was found and confiscated from a student at HMS-7. Below is that statement.

Friday morning, Hutchinson Middle School-7 Principal and Hutchinson Police Department seized a gun from a student entering school for the day. 

 Through proper reporting and people speaking up, Mr. Henry, Principal, was able to have police presence at the school when the student entered. The gun has been confiscated by police, and the student is in police custody. 

 Classes at HMS-7 were in a lockdown for a short period of time Friday morning, and all students and staff are safe. 

 We thank the individuals who spoke up to report the concern and bring it to the attention of the principal, and we appreciate Mr. Henry being proactive and working with Hutch PD to keep our students and community safe.

Superintendent issues statement on gun at HMS-7 Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said there will be two bills that are top priorities for when legislators return in January if she is elected again. The first of those is a quicker end to the food sales tax.

"I will have a bill on their desks when they come back in January that will totally eliminate the food sales tax as quickly as we can administratively do that," Kelly said. "There was no reason to delay implementation or to stretch it out over three years. I spent 14 years on the budget committee in the Senate. I know that the money is there and I know that it is ongoing revenue. It's not one time federal funding. It is ongoing revenue that has been generated by the economic development that we've been able to achieve."

The other major bill is Medicaid expansion.

"I have presented four different proposals for Medicaid expansion in the time that I have been governor," Kelly said. "All of them were ones that we could afford. All of them were ones that we needed to do, to not just make sure that we make health care accessible to 150,000 Kansans, but also that we grow our economy. We've forfeited now over $6 billion in federal funding that should have come to Kansas. It's gone to California, New York and everyplace else for them to take care of their folks and grow their economy. We need to bring that money here."

Kelly also said expanding Medicaid will give funding to hospitals that need it to keep their people.

"Right now, every state around us has expanded Medicaid and we are bleeding health care workers over to those states," Kelly said. "They can get reimbursed for their services. We also know that we have a huge mental health challenge here in the state of Kansas. Expanding Medicaid would give access to mental health services to so many people who are in dire need but cannot afford it."

Kelly is in south central Kansas on Friday for an agricultural meeting in Hutchinson and a KDOT announcement in Wichita.

Hutchinson Housing Commission to hear from SCKEDD next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Former Vice President Mike Pence is in Wichita Friday to campaign for Republican candidate for governor, Derek Schmidt.

"I'm coming to Kansas for one reason, and one reason only," Pence said. "Kansas needs Derek Schmidt to be its next governor. Derek is a proven, common sense conservative leader. He's been one of the most preeminent and effective conservative attorney generals around the country."

Pence isn't ready to say what his political future might be, but he is still looking to serve the country wherever he can.

Pence campaigning for Schmidt Friday during 'challenging time' for the country

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The fundraisers for the Jones family of Nickerson who were victims of an accident in Louisville, Kentucky this summer continue.

The girls basketball team at Nickerson is doing a fundraiser for the Jones family, <a href="https://finchers-nickerson-jones22.itemorder.com/shop/home/">selling T-Shirts online through Fincher's Findings</a>. The T-Shirts are $10 and will be available for pickup approximately two weeks after the order deadline on Nov. 14.

The team will wear them for their first home game. Ava Jones is a senior at Nickerson High and she and her family were in Kentucky for an AAU basketball tournament she was playing in when 33-year-old Michael Hurley missed a turn and hit the family on the sidewalk. He told police at the time he had taken hydrocodone.

&nbsp;Trey Jones died a few days after the accident at the hospital. Amy and Ava Jones are still dealing with both the injuries and the medical costs associated with a lengthy hospital stay for each of them.

Hurley was already on probation for drug possession and drug use in Indiana at the time of the crash. He has pled not guilty.

T-Shirt fundraiser for Jones family

SEDGWICK COUNTY — More details are available in the case of a Hutchinson woman charged in the death of a man who fell from the hood of a moving car.

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20079206">Ashley Corley, 36, Hutchinson, </a>is charged with first-degree murder, leaving the scene of an accident and a misdemeanor count of driving while license suspended or canceled, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Police arrested Corley on Saturday in connection with a traffic fatality that occurred Friday in the 3000 block of West 9th Street in Wichita.

Just before 8 a.m.,&nbsp; police responded to 9th Street North and St. Paul in Wichita where they found 41-year-old Rigoberto Rivas in the street. He had head injuries and died at a local hospital, according to Officer Chad Ditch.&nbsp;

Investigators learned that Rivas and Corley were seen running toward a gray car parked on the curb at 9th Street. Corley allegedly entered the vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed with Rivas on the hood. The car swerved and Rivas fell from the car.

A follow-up investigation led officers to believe the car was stolen.

Police investigators arrested Corley in Hutchison, transported her back to Wichita and booked her into the Sedgwick County Jail.

&nbsp;On October 31, attorneys in the case are scheduled to discuss future dates with Judge Jeffrey Syrios, according to the district attorney's office. Corley remains jailed on $500,000 bond.

Cris Corey gives response to party release

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel believes that consumers in Hutchinson now know that they can fill their stockings and under their trees without leaving the area.

"We've seen a great return to local," Teufel said. "I think that's come through in sales tax. Numbers during the pandemic started looking better for Hutchinson and Reno County. I think that was partly because people started figuring out, I'm not going to be able to go to wherever they were shopping before and they started thinking local again. We really haven't seen those numbers soften. Some of that is inflationary pressure. That just results in an increase in sales tax, but that trend started even before the inflation started creeping up."

Retailers are optimistic at this point, according to Teufel.

"When I go talk to retailers across the community and up and down Main Street, they are very bullish on Hutchinson and the sales," Teufel said. "From the jewelry stores downtown to the clothiers to confectioners and everything, things have been good for them. We hope that doesn't slow down. We want people to think local for the holidays."

Annual McCartney Johnson blood drive is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will hold three meetings in November.

According to an email to Hutch Post, the board will not hold its regular meeting next Tuesday and instead will move that meeting to Nov. 1. They will then hold meetings on Nov. 22 and Nov. 29.

All of those meetings will be at 9 a.m. on the respective Tuesday mornings. It is most likely that the Nov. 1 meeting at least will be in the commission chambers at the courthouse, because advance voting is going on during that time at the Reno County Annex.

WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita Police have released the name of a man that fell off of the hood of a car and died last Friday, after what prosecutors say was a hit and run incident. 

Police say 41-year-old Rigoberto Rivas was lying in the street at&nbsp;at 9th Street North and St. Paul in west Wichita around 7:40 a.m. on October 14.

Prosecutors have charged a Hutchinson woman in the incident.

Thirty-six-year-old Ashley Corley was booked over the weekend for failure to stop at an accident resulting in death and driving while suspended.

Along with the first-degree murder charge, Corley was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and a misdemeanor count of driving while her license is suspended or canceled.

They had a vision that their child, regardless of their disability, could be a contributing member of society and have a job of their own after graduation. In 1973, TECH opened its doors, serving 5 individuals.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, TECH provides services to over 225 individuals in our community.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson USD 308 recently had its accreditation visit and Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson is still talking with staff about how to apply their conclusions.

"They pore over a lot of data," Johnson said. "They look at our community partnerships. We have a strong community partnership with HCC and the Chamber and many local businesses here. I think that's a plus for us. They look at communication. Since we have Marissa on board with us, our communication has increased tenfold. They look at our civic engagement and then, of course, our academic growth."

The growth of HCTEA's offerings was noted as a positive for the district.

"They highlighted the 22 career pathways that we have," Johnson said. "In our academic growth that we do with Fastbridge and with state assessments, they highlighted that we showed improvement in ten academic areas."

Growth is a challenge for any district post-COVID as it deals with the catch up from learning loss due to the pandemic.

"I like to have quarterly counselings with my leaders," Johnson said. "I'm in the second quarter of the counseling. I went around at the beginning of the year one on one. Now, I'm doing that a second time. We're taking a look at Fastbridge. Fastbridge is a screener that we can do more than a state assessment. State assessment is one time a year, so we can do some screener data. I am noticing as we are looking at the data with the principals, that second graders are the lowest. When we think about where they have been in the last couple of years, it's not surprising, but that trend, as I see that trend, I think we can definitely relate that to COVID."

That's why it is a budget emphasis for the district this year to find money to deal with some of that learning loss in the district.

The Kansas Republican Party Constitution does not allow for the support of any candidate other than the Republican nominee in a contested, partisan campaign for public office. "The Republican constituency has spoken. They have chosen Randy Parks as their nominee for County Commissioner, and the Central Committee respects their decision," Patton said. Therefore, the Reno County Republican Central Committee cannot and will not support Cris Corey as a candidate in the upcoming general election for County Commissioner.

"Corey implies his allegiance to the Republican Party; however, his actions have not been indicative of a desire to work with or support the party platform," Patton said. "During his primary campaign, Cris never sought Republican support for his race even though multiple opportunities and invitations were made available to him," continued Patton. Contribution records even show the Corey household donated to the local Democratic Party. While Cris speaks of wanting to work together and collaborate, his actions show otherwise. He has taken the low road of attacking his opponent through baseless claims of calling Parks "a far-right extremist" and trying to circumvent the will of the Republican electorate by ignoring their vote from the primary election. "Disrespecting members of the community through his campaign is not what we want to see out of a potential County Commissioner? "stated Patton.

Reno County Republican Central Committee issues statement on Corey campaign

OMAHA, Neb.  — Union Pacific Corporation on Thursday reported 2022 third quarter net income of $1.9 billion, or $3.05 per diluted share. 

The nation's largest railroad said these results include a $114 million charge for a change to prior period accounting estimates related to new, tentative and ratified labor agreements.&nbsp; Excluding the effects of that charge, adjusted third quarter net income was $2.0 billion, or $3.19 per diluted share. This compares to 2021 third quarter net income of $1.7 billion, or $2.57 per diluted share.

Operating revenue of $6.6 billion was up 18% driven by higher fuel surcharge revenue, volume growth, and core pricing gains.

Business volumes, as measured by total revenue carloads, were up 3%.

Union Pacific’s reported operating ratio was 59.9%. Excluding the charge, the adjusted operating ratio of 58.2% deteriorated by 190 basis points. Lower fuel prices positively impacted the operating ratio by 70 basis points.

Adjusted operating income of $2.7 billion was up 13%.

The company repurchased 9.5 million shares in third quarter 2022 at an aggregate cost of $2.1 billion.

UP operates about 25 trains per day in Reno County, which include intermodal and grain shipments. The railroad carries the fourth-highest valuation in the county.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There is a public information event tonight at the&nbsp;Shears Technology Center at 6 p.m. on the quarter-cent sales tax renewal vote.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/pavetheway22">The quarter cent sales tax that supports street construction, property tax relief, Cosmosphere and Strataca is up for a public vote November 8</a>. If approved, this would be the sixth time voters gave the go-ahead for the tax.

The projected $11 million generated over five years from the renewal of the sales tax would continue to be distributed so that 47% of the tax goes for Hutchinson's street program, 33% to Cosmosphere, 15% for property tax reduction, and 5% to Strataca.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Date for the 17th Talk20 Hutch has been announced as Friday, January 27, 2023.

Talk20 Hutch is not a lecture but a gathering, an open forum for the exchange of ideas. It brings together people in the community to listen, learn, and engage with one another over topics as varying as aviation, life after a coma, and placemaking.

Engage your curiosity and join the 17th Talk20 Hutch, where 10 Reno County community members will present 20 images each, speaking for 20 seconds per image, on 10 wildly different topics.

This event will be live in-person at the Hutchinson Public Library and livestreamed from the Talk20 Hutch Facebook page and YouTube channel.

The 10 presenters will be announced in early January.

Hutchinson city committees, boards still looking for members

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; In recognition of the Dillon Nature Center’s Foundation 50th&nbsp;year, DNC Foundation board members are inviting nature center supporters and the public to donate to a special 50 for 50 Fundraising campaign.

For 50 years, the Foundation has provided support to Dillon Nature Center. Notable projects include: Construction of the Visitor’s Center; updates to the Closer Look at Nature interactive exhibits; construction of the Jim Smith Family Playscape; and the recent purchases of a tractor, mower, and truck.

The Foundation’s work continues to position DNC as an innovative nature education and outdoor recreation experience in the region. Most recently, the Foundation funded the development of a strategic plan that will determine the program, facility, and partnership needs. The implementation of this strategic plan will establish Dillon Nature Center as a leader in nature education and environmental stewardship by connecting our community to nature and empowering them to create a sustainable future through conservation efforts.

As the nature center prepares for the strategic plan final report this winter, the Foundation has set a goal to raise $50,000 to support the goals and initiatives approved in the plan. The group is holding a Red, White and Stew supper. Veterans Eat Free. Honor Flight will be serving a large bowl of Chris’s Famous Beef Stew for only $5. There also will be hamburgers available and a bake sale.

The Kansas Honor Flight Hutchinson (KHF) Volunteers are fully-powered by all-volunteers. The Kansas Honor Flight volunteers works to honor Kansas veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War by providing them with an all expense paid three day trip of honor and remembrance to visit their memorials in Washington, D.C. The organization also works to educate the youth and communities throughout Kansas about the impact of these historic wars and the freedom our nation enjoys because of the service of our veterans.

The trip cost is approximately $900 per veteran.  There are approximately 600 Kansas Veterans waiting to go on this once in a lifetime trip.
