HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to data analysis from SmartAsset, two central Kansas counties were among the most generous in charitable giving in the state in 2020.
To find the most generous places, the website compared two factors in each county: the amount of money people donate as a percentage of their net income, and the proportion of people who made charitable donations.
To determine the amount of money that people donate as a percentage of their income, SmartAsset first calculated the net income for everyone in each county. To do this, they looked at tax return data and accounted for federal, state and local taxes paid.
The website also accounted for deductible entries, including mortgage interest, mortgage points and mortgage insurance payments. Each county's total charitable donations were then divided by its total net income to see the amount of money residents in each county have donated relative to their income.
The website also measured the total number of individual tax returns that show charitable contributions and divided that by the total number of individual tax returns in each county. This results in the proportion of people in each county who make charitable donations.

Harvey County was 8th most generous, according to SmartAsset, McPherson County was 10th. Reno County was 24th.
It's important to note that the percentage of returns index only refers to those itemizing charitable contributions, so those who made little enough to not have to itemize their deductions are not necessarily included in that portion of the index.
