HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Coats for Kids drive has a big milestone this year with Ineeda Cleaners in Hutchinson.

"We are so excited to be a part of such a long tradition in Hutchinson," said Rachel Nelson with Ineeda Cleaners. "This year is 35 years of Coats for Kids. Chris and I, my husband, we're so happy that we can continue the tradition of Coats for Kids, started by Ineeda founder, John Neal."

The drive is going on through the end of the month.

"What you do is, clean out your closets, look in your kids closets for unnecessary items, coats, blankets, gloves, hats," Nelson said. "You can drop them off any time. We have a buggy in our lobby at 13th and Main at our Ineeda location. You can just stop by, put them in our buggy or give them to one of our friendly staff. We will take them to our production facility and clean them, wash them, dry clean them, whatever they need to look their best and then we will get them ready for the Salvation Army for their distribution day.

With COVID, the number of items has gone up and down, but with the early cold snap this year, the hope is that will remind people of the need while they still have time to give.

"We had a crazy year about four years ago, we did about 3200 items," Nelson said. "Last year, we were around 1500. That's typically a good year for us. Anything over 1400 to 1500 items we feel really gives a lot of choices for people when they go to the Salvation Army."

Ineeda is open to take coats at 13th and Main in Hutchinson Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. or Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Coats for Kids in 35th year in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2022 Reno County Tax Sale was held October 18th at Memorial Hall. 

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, 44 delinquent properties were auctioned to the highest bidder.&nbsp; REIB Auctions performed the auction on the properties that were sold. 

The Sheriff's Office said there will be another sale for two remaining properties that did not sell at the auction. They will give public notice when that sale is scheduled.

Reno County Tax Sale sells 44 properties

WICHITA, Kan. — A Hutchinson woman who was arrested in connection to what prosecutors say was a hit-and-run death of a man in west Wichita last week has been charged with first-degree murder. 

Thirty-six-year-old Ashley Corley was booked over the weekend for failure to stop at an accident resulting in death and driving while suspended. 

Along with the first-degree murder charge, Corley was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and a misdemeanor count of driving while her license is suspended or canceled.

Police said the victim was on the hood of a moving car near 9th and St. Paul on Friday morning when he fell off. He died at a local hospital. Police have not released the victim's name.

USD 308 announces Kansas Teacher of the Year nominees

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 is hosting a "Raising Cooperative Kids" course on 6 Monday evenings in November and December.

The course is from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. November 7 through December 12.

Joe Kaufman, Buhler Grade School Counselor, is a positive discipline certified trainer and will be hosting the sessions. 

Child care will be offered free at Plum Creek Elementary during the sessions by Buhler High students.

The course is free, though donations of canned food are suggested.

Space may be limited and because the funding for the course comes through a preschool grant, pre-K parents will be prioritized.

Archaeology Basics lecture is next week at Dillon Nature Center

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Justin Combs with City of Hutchinson Parks and Facilities talked to the City Council Tuesday about some grant funds that his department didn't have access to before through the Community Development Block Grant program.

"For the first time, those funds are being made available to parks, trails, sidewalks, community recreation facilities," Combs said. "Historically, those projects have never been allowed. Our community does qualify. There's some thresholds as far as low to moderate income. We are on the list that qualifies to receive these funds. It is a match program with a minimum of 25%. In the language they have pushed out, they kind of lean more towards a 50-50 match, with a maximum of $750,000."

Combs is looking at already budgeted projects because of the timeline needed to get things together.

"By the end of the month, by October 31st, we have to have an agreement with a grant administrator," Combs said. "We've historically always used SCKEDD to do that for us. We've had some initial conversations. Jim Seitnater has helped facilitate some of those conversations with SCKEDD. They are very interested in helping us. However, before I proceeded and signed a contract with them, I just wanted to make sure it was something that council was aware of and supportive of. If we do proceed with SCKEDD, there's no risk involved. They will only charge us a fee if we get the grant."

The fee traditionally is five percent of the grant award. There also would be a separate fee if SCKEDD actually did the grant writing, but that was not before the council on Tuesday.

"The grant's actually not due until February," Combs said. "The actual application is due in February, there's also a public hearing that will have to happen. There will be opportunities for formal action by council to proceed. I just didn't want the first time you hear about this to be when it shows up on the agenda as a public hearing."

There was consensus among the council to have SCKEDD do the administration for the grant, since the council's next official meeting isn't until November 1.

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven Electrical Distribution Superintendent Chad Swartz is being offered the job as the city's Public Works Director. 

The Haven City Council voted 3-2 to offer him the job at their Monday meeting. He has until noon Wednesday to decide.

Haven council offers public works job Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Interim Hutchinson City Manager Gary Meagher gave more details on the way the meeting with the consultant to talk about his replacement will go.

"November 1st is when the council will meet with the recruiter, Art Davis," Meagher said Tuesday. "At that time, he'll have a list of candidates he'll have gone through. Art has not only received applications, but those that are qualified, he's asked for additional information. He'll have information on these candidates, probably make some recommendations, allow you to look at the list of candidates and their qualifications, make a selection on those that you would like to interview and set a date for those interviews."

They are looking at starting in the evening, potentially as early as 5 p.m. on November 1.

"You'll have the evening, too," Meagher said. "That will take a little bit of time. That will be an executive session. I know it makes kind of a long day, because you have a council meeting in the morning, but I think it would be good if you have that time period, you can focus."

There were 33 applicants a few weeks ago, and more have been received since then.

Lots of applicants to look through Nov. 1 for permanent City Manager

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Building Official Izzy Rivera announced his resignation publicly at Tuesday's City Council Meeting.

"My last day will be October 28th," Rivera said. "Know that I did that with a heavy heart. I really love it here. It's because of the kind of family feel we have here in this town. For us to leave is kind of emotional for my wife and myself. Unfortunately, like I told staff, the order of life is, God, family and work. Unfortunately, I have a family issue that I have to address and it's back in Texas."

Rivera will be working for Princeton, Texas, just northeast of Dallas.

"I will still be a part of the city," Rivera said. "I have told the city manager that I have permission from my superiors over there that, if the city needs me for advice or anything, I'll be more than happy to be available for that, especially with the implementation of the new permitting software that was approved and started."

Also, a temporary replacement has been named for Rivera's job.

"Mike Post, our electrical inspector, will be the interim building official, until a building official and director has been selected," Rivera said. "That way, the momentum that we've had going for the past two years continues. Hopefully, with a new person that's coming in, we'll continue that, as well."

Rivera expressed to those left behind that they need to continue the positive relationship that has been built with the local landlord association, so that issues can be addressed fairly for everyone.

Rivera announces resignation, heading back to Texas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The <a href="https://members.hutchchamber.com/events/2022Chamber%20Annual%20Meeting-9668/details">Hutchinson-Reno County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting</a> is coming up October 27 at the Meadowlark Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

"We're really excited about this event this year," said Chamber CEO Debra Teufel. "It is all about honoring the 150 year history of our city and county and so, a lot of the tone of the evening is really going to focus on that, celebrating that past history, but also looking forward to the future."

The keynote speaker has a special take on leadership, thanks to where he's been.

"The keynote is a former Navy SEAL, Carlos Mendez," Teufel said. "He comes to us from Echelon Front. It's an institution that's made up of former SEALs that are out there doing training. Many people will have heard of Jocko Willink. Jocko wrote a book on extreme leadership and Carlos is going to give us a bit of a dose of that extreme leadership and those principles and how our businesses can apply that in their daily lives."

You're going to get to spend about four and a half hours with Carlos, taking a dive into his leadership principles and also, then, getting to do some exercises where you can apply that to your business. I think we have room. It's at Sandhills Event Center, so the more the merrier. The first 50 that registered will get the book, a signed copy of the book, Extreme Leadership. Even without the book, it's well worth getting to spend a half day and take a little bit deeper approach to how you can apply these extreme leadership principles."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Public Forum for the new Hutchinson Youth Council has been rescheduled. It was originally supposed to be Saturday, October 22 at Memorial Hall at 10 a.m. Due to conflicts with schedules, that date has been moved to December 3 at 5 p.m.

Prospective Youth Council members will have a chance to speak before the youth of the community get to vote on their representatives.

Youth Council voting members will be comprised of: President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Activities Director. The office of Vice-President will be reserved for 8th Grade students only. The office of Secretary will be reserved for 7th Grade students only.

Forum for new Hutchinson Youth Council rescheduled for Dec.

RENO COUNTY —The Reno County Sheriff's Office responded shortly after 2 a.m. to an accident between two semi trucks on Highway 50 near South Hutchinson.

According to Capt. Levi Blumanhorst, a Kenworth T680 driven by a 42 year old male from Farmington, MO attempted to complete a U-Turn on US-50 Hwy starting from the far right lane which caused him to cross in front of a 2021 Kenworth T680 truck driven by a 75 year old male from Wichita, KS.  The trucks collided in the inside lane of US-50 Hwy causing one of the trucks to overturn and stop lying on the drivers side. 

 There was a small hazardous material concern due to diesel leaking from the truck and units from District 8 Fire and Hutchinson Fire Department responded to  address that issue. 

 Neither driver was transported for injuries and both of the trucks were removed from the scene.

Semis collide early Tuesday in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Monday afternoon fire damaged a Hutchinson home.

Firefighters were called to 510 East 23rd for a house fire just after 3 p.m. and found smoke coming out of the house from all windows. The fire was contained to one room. One person was there and was already outside when firefighters got there. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters noted that before traffic control could be established, cars kept going on 23rd and there were some close calls with firefighters trying to assess the scene. 

The department is asking that if you see emergency vehicles and are able, please find alternate routes, even if traffic control is not there yet.

Downtown Hutch promotes new Native American jeweler

Wichita, Kan.&nbsp;– The&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasleadershipcenter.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Leadership Center</a>&nbsp;(KLC) has selected 87 organizations across Kansas – three from Hutchinson – as 2023 Leadership Transformation Grant partners. The Hutchinson partners are Hutchinson Correctional Facility, Hutchinson Community Foundation and United Way of Reno County. The grants will help the partner organizations create a culture that embraces change, tackles problems and seizes opportunities.

Leadership Transformation Grants provide the opportunity for participants to learn, practice and engage with the KLC Framework. The program also utilizes KLC’s new book,&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasleadershipcenter.org/when-everyone-leads/" target="_blank">When Everyone Leads</a>, to be released by best-selling business publisher Bard Press on January 31, 2023.

Organizations who receive a Leadership Transformation Grant will establish a core team of three to six individuals to take on the responsibilities of the grant. Organizations chosen will have one year to participate in KLC’s dynamic program experiences and utilize KLC resources and consultation.

Three Hutch orgs get KLC grants

KINGMAN COUNTY—A Hutchinson man was injured in an accident just after 2 p.m. Monday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Sterling trash truck driven by Christian A.&nbsp;Reveles Medina, 24, Hutchinson, was northbound on NW 170th Avenue at 10th Street.

The truck met another large truck. The trash truck moved to the right and crossed the fog line. The passenger side tires entered the east ditch and the driver overcorrected. The truck entered west ditch and the driver overcorrected again and the truck overturned.&nbsp; The truck came to rest on the passenger side in the middle of the road.

EMS transported&nbsp;Reveles Medina to a Wichita hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kiwanis Chili and Soup Festival seeking business sponsors

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The open enrollment period for 2023 Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans is underway. 

The period began Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. The Reno County Department of Aging is partnering with trained SHICK volunteers from the Reno County Volunteer Center to offer counseling and assistance for Reno County residents over age 60 who need help enrolling or reviewing their drug coverage. 

SHICK is the acronym for the Senior Health Insurance Counselors in Kansas program conducted through the Kansas Department of Aging. Reviewing your Medicare Part D Prescription Drug plan each year is important to ensure the best coverage for the best price.

If you are on Medicare Part A or Part A &amp; B and currently have or want to have a Part D Prescription Drug Plan, you need to make an appointment.

If you are currently on KanCare, you do not need to make an appointment because your prescription drugs are being managed through the KanCare program.

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, contact your plan provider to discuss your prescription drug coverage for 2023. You will not need an appointment for that.

The counseling and enrollment assistance is offered at the Reno County Department of Aging. This fall, appointments are face-to-face personal appointments on a first-come, first-served basis. Frimpong is 'First Course' speaker Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pavetheway22">The quarter cent sales tax that supports street construction, property tax relief, Cosmosphere and Strataca is up for a public vote November 8</a>. It's not a new tax.

"I think this is the sixth time that it's come up for a vote," said Hutchinson Interim City Manager Gary Meagher.

Jim Remar with Cosmosphere said that the sales tax money is vital to their operations.

"It accounts for about 19 percent of our budget," Remar said. "It allows us to do a lot of the different programming and upgrades at the facility. In fact, a prime example is this past weekend, we had a SR-71 event, where we had pilots, SROs and maintenance crews in Friday, Saturday and Sunday at no cost to the public and it's through the proceeds of the sales tax that we're able to do things like this."

Remar added that a sales tax is an appropriate way to support tourist attractions like Cosmosphere, because that allows the people that come to town for such things to help support their infrastructure.

"Over 20% of that tax is generated from people coming from outside of Hutchinson," Remar said. 

The projected $11 million generated over five years from the renewal of the sales tax would continue to be distributed so that 47% of the tax goes for Hutchinson's street program, 33% to Cosmosphere, 15% for property tax reduction, and 5% to Strataca. 

A community conversation on the tax will happen at Shears Technology Center on October 20th at 6:30 p.m.&nbsp;

Quarter-cent sales tax on ballot Nov. 8

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —This time of year marks the period when vehicle-deer collisions increase, and Kansas roadways are no exception.

"We're just reminding people to really be aware that deer are out and about," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "It can happen any time. You may find them on the road at any time of the day, but especially during dawn and dusk hours, when they are more active."

If you see one deer, expect others, as deer seldom travel alone.

"It can be a very dangerous situation and also a costly one," Steward said. "Data collected by the Kansas Department of Transportation indicates that in 2021, six people were killed and more than 600 were injured in collisions involving deer."

The average cost per claim when insurance was involved was nearly $6,100.

"If a deer enters the roadway in front of your car, it's best to hit the animal and not swerve to avoid it," Steward said. "We often find that the more serious crashes occur when you swerve to miss the deer. You could potentially lose control of your vehicle, leave the roadway, end up in a ditch or veer into oncoming traffic. It can be particularly dangerous if you swerve to avoid the animal. I know it's the natural instinct to try not to hit the deer, but in many cases, it can cause an even worse outcome if you do that."

Anyone involved in a collision with a deer resulting in personal injury or property damage that totals $1,000 or more is required to immediately report the incident to the nearest law enforcement agency.
