MCPHERSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://thecedars.org/" target="_blank">The Cedars</a> retirement community in McPherson recently completed the updating and remodeling of their Assisted Living Community Area. A ribbon-cutting with the McPherson Chamber of Commerce was held on June 8. &nbsp;

The Cedars is the longest continuous retirement community in the State of Kansas and has been serving their residents for over 130 years.&nbsp;

The project reflects The Cedars’ desire to capitalize on the importance of having a space for residents to be able to socialize and build relationships within&nbsp;their community.&nbsp;This rang true especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Getting people out of their apartments and enjoying the outdoors was something that The Cedars wanted to improve upon.&nbsp;

The newly refreshed area offers a technology center, a coffee bar, and restaurant-style dining with both indoor and outdoor dining area options. There are also areas to watch television, read, sit by the fireplace, or maybe do some work on one of the computers. Then there is space for families to gather no matter what the size.&nbsp;

The remodel of the Assisted Living Community Area was carefully designed with the residents in mind. The remodel committee consisted of three of the independent-living residents and four Cedars employees.&nbsp;

"What we had was a cafeteria in some ways, and a space that didn’t invite people to come down in between eating experiences or trying to create spaces for people to come down, for family members to be here," LaMonte Rothrock, CEO at The Cedars, said. "A lot of you would remember during COVID family members weren’t even allowed in. We’re trying to create spaces again to get people out of their apartments. We understand the social/emotional piece so well that we need to provide those opportunities for people to interact with each other. So that was really the motivation behind this project."&nbsp;

To accomplish that, different spaces were created within the area. &nbsp;

The comfort issue, such as it being too cold in the winter, was addressed by moving the exterior door providing an airlock to keep it more insulated. Sitting areas around the fireplace were opened to make a very comfortable area for conversation. &nbsp;

There is also a desk and computer area accessible to residents. &nbsp;

One area of the space has a nice countertop and serving area which can facilitate cooking classes or presentations. Areas for dining were adjusted and can now easily accommodate any size of gathering. &nbsp;

Essentially, the Assisted Living Community Area was opened up and made much more flexible as a living space.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"This area will be the hub of socialization, active lifestyles, and community building for many, many years to come," Daniela Rivas, McPherson Assistant City Administrator, said. "We would not be the successful city we are without this organization, this community, and the dedicated professionals who are passionate about what they do and give back. It really does take a village."

An open house for the public will take place on June 18. &nbsp;

The Cedars completes remodel 

CHENEY, Kan. — Internet Freedom will soon arrive in Cheney.

IdeaTek crews have been working this spring to expand its popular ultra-fast fiber internet to hundreds of Cheney residents and businesses. This game-changing expansion will deliver gigabit speeds at affordable prices, empowering the community with a new era of connectivity.

IdeaTek has long been dedicated to bridging the digital divide in rural areas by bringing fiber internet access to underserved rural communities. However, internet access challenges extend beyond rural areas, said Daniel Friesen, IdeaTek’s co-founder and chief innovation officer.&nbsp;

"At IdeaTek, we believe every community and every Kansan deserves access to high-speed fiber internet, and we’re excited to be making it a reality in Cheney,” Friesen said. “With fiber, we are providing a new foundation for innovation, creativity and progress in the age of the digital economy."

IdeaTek has recently built fiber infrastructure in the nearby communities of Colwich, Goddard and Halstead. The company is also currently building fiber internet to Sedgwick and Burrton.&nbsp;

Last year, IdeaTek deployed wireless internet to Cheney and the surrounding rural areas. It was developed as a temporary solution until fiber could be built. Investment in fiber is a scalable solution for Kansas’ future growth, Friesen said. Fiber internet offers symmetrical upload and download speeds, scalable capacities for decades to come, enhanced reliability, and better pricing compared to current service providers in the city.

“We build to the standards of the future, not today,” he said. "Fiber internet is the gold standard for internet connectivity, and we want to bring this technology to as many communities as possible.”

Construction will be completed in the coming weeks, bringing residents unlimited and uncapped speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second. Furthermore, IdeaTek offers the convenience of no-contract agreements, giving customers more flexibility.

To celebrate fiber coming to Cheney, IdeaTek will have a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. June 15. Refreshments will be served and the IdeaTek sales team will be on hand to answer questions about service plans.

The team also will be at the Sedgwick County Fair parade in Cheney July 12, giving away candy and Cheney Cardinals T-shirts.

Based in Buhler, IdeaTek was founded in 1999 by Friesen and four high school friends. Today, the company employs over 140 Kansans and is continuing to grow. IdeaTek has deployed more than 4,500 miles of fiber and built 150 fixed wireless towers, serving customers in nearly 90 Kansas communities.&nbsp;

Ideatek expands fiber to Cheney; ribbon cutting June 15

As Father’s Day approaches this year, I have been reflecting on the life and legacy of my grandfather, Emil, who passed away at the age of 95 earlier this year. I spent more of my life with him than any of my other grandparents, giving me a deeper understanding of the wisdom he shared and the ways he shaped the character and personalities of my family.

Grandpa wasn’t outwardly affectionate; I am not sure I ever remember seeing him hug or show public affection to anyone. He showed love by working hard to support his family; he spent more than 40 years working six days a week on rotating shifts at the local paper mill and milking 40 to 50 head of cattle twice a day. He showed support to his grandchildren through generosity by buying 4-H and FFA project animals, getting us show supplies or making contributions to fund experiences that expanded our educations and broadened our horizons.

He didn’t give pep talks, preach life lessons or try to inspire by speech, but his ability to persevere and overcome obstacles inspires me. He began life in a home where only German was spoken. Though he and his siblings learned English at school, his mother never did. He and his brothers took responsibilities for running the farm at a young age because his father suffered injuries in World War I that prevented him from providing for the family. He left high school to serve in the Navy at the end of World War II and eventually completed his education after he returned from the service. At the age of 92, he crawled 150 yards with a broken hip after rolling his ATV, and instead of letting the injuries conquer him, he waited out his sentence of rehab at the nursing facility without complaint until he was healed enough to return home. 

Grandpa had a quiet devotion to the important things in life. He visited his wife of 60 years every single day for several years when she moved into a nursing home at the end of her life even though he remained at home to continue running the farm. He never spoke about religion but attended church every Sunday, even after my grandmother passed away, until his health prevented him and he had to listen to the service on the radio.

He showed patriotism was important, and he was proud to be a member of the American Legion for 70-plus years. The Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2011 was the trip of a lifetime for him, and he loved to share stories and pictures from the trip. At the age of 94 he participated in the Dream Flight and took a ride in a WWII biplane.

He cared about making a good impression and showing respect. Grandpa showed tremendous pride that our family dressed formally for grandma’s funeral because he thought too few people show that kind of care and effort anymore. My cousin recounted how, in the age of cell phones, he always left her very formal voicemails stating, “Hello, Jenna. This is your grandfather, Emil Mundt…”

My grandfather passed along more than the genes for bushy eyebrows and having a big sweet tooth to his children and grandchildren. His values of love, service, generosity, hard work, dedication, pride and high standards are a legacy that live on in me and my family members.

Happy Father’s Day and thank you to all the men who are modeling important values and showing the value of character in life.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mayor Brian Garretson’s appointment of Dina Brislin to the South Hutchinson City Council was confirmed on a unanimous vote Monday night. 

Her appointment returns the Council back to full-strength following the resignation of Councilman Jeff Schenk who was hired to become the new city administrator.

“I love our community and I am committed to serving and helping to make it better,” Councilwoman Brislin stated. “I enjoy being the best mother, wife, and supporter of my community and I am really excited about the future.”

Brislin is a wife and mother to 6 children. She has lived in South Hutchinson since August 2022.

Given the timing of the recent filing period for the upcoming city council elections this year, Mayor Garretson felt it made the most sense to appoint one of the candidates to fill the vacancy. Brislin was the only female candidate and now becomes the only female member of the council since Megan Weber resigned her seat last year. Prior to Weber, the last female member of the Council was former mayor Mandi Blumanhourst who served from 2012-2019.

“She represents a different voice and offers an entirely unique perspective on the council as a mother,” Garretson said. “Additionally, her work expertise in the insurance industry and previous work experience in human resources and finance will benefit our future discussions on the budget and related issues.”

Despite being appointed to the City Council, Brislin still must win her November election to retain her spot. There are three seats up for election and a total of four candidates. The other three candidates are Alvie Lohr, Kyle Cokeley, and the lone incumbent, John Fairbanks.

Brislin appointed to South Hutchinson City Council

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Clinic announced on Monday the death of Dr. Dustin Harker. Below is the post from the Clinic...

Below is information provided to Hutch Post by Sharon Neu Young, sister of Harker's wife Emilie, on behalf of the family.

A family of thirteen from Hutchinson, Kansas is grieving the loss of a husband and father. 

Dustin Harker was on a whitewater rafting trip with friends from church and four of his thirteen children. They set off on their adventure on the river on Friday, June 9th. 

It was a river they had rafted before, but this year with the high rainfall the rapids were more turbulent than in the past. During their ride down the river, the raft with Dustin and three of his children tragically capsized. 

Everyone struggled to get above water. In the tumult, Dustin threw the capsized raft off his youngest daughter who was trapped underneath. They all thankfully made it to shore. Unfortunately, by then Dustin had already taken on too much water. He was still speaking but shortly after became unresponsive. The other leaders present administered CPR for 30 minutes to try to resuscitate him, without success. 

The family is so grateful that all of the children have made it home and for Dustin who made sure that happened. This turn of events has been traumatic for everyone involved – especially for those who witnessed the tragedy unfold.

Dustin was a neurologist and a devoted father, loved playing games, having outdoor adventures and having fun with his kids. And to state the obvious, given that he and his wife, Emilie, have thirteen children, both of them have been very invested in and devoted to their family. The children range in age from 23 to 4 years old. Emilie has been a stay-at-home mother, homeschooling their children and taking care of their needs.&nbsp;

Dustin Harker was on a whitewater rafting trip with friends from church and four of his thirteen children. They set off on their adventure on the river on Friday, June 9th. It was a river they had rafted before, but this year with the high rainfall the rapids were more turbulent than in the past. During their ride down the river, the raft with Dustin and three of his children tragically capsized. Everyone struggled to get above water. In the tumult, Dustin threw the capsized raft off his youngest daughter who was trapped underneath. They all thankfully made it to shore. Unfortunately, by then Dustin had already taken on too much water. He was still speaking but shortly after became unresponsive. The other leaders present administered CPR for 30 minutes to try to resuscitate him, without success. The family is so grateful that all of the children have made it home and for Dustin who made sure that happened. This turn of events has been traumatic for everyone involved – especially for those who witnessed the tragedy unfold.Dustin was a neurologist and a devoted father, loved playing games, having outdoor adventures and having fun with his kids. And to state the obvious, given that he and his wife, Emilie, have thirteen children, both of them have been very invested in and devoted to their family. The children range in age from 23 to 4 years old. Hutchinson Clinic announces physician death, family provides details

UPDATE: The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the woman that died in a single-vehicle accident Sunday evening southeast of Hesston.

Traci Slater, 35, of Hesston, was driving in the 5500 block of North Hesston Road when her vehicle went off the roadway, entered the ditch and rolled.

There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

It is not known why the vehicle left the roadway. The accident remains under investigation.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the accident in the 5500 block of North Hesston Road at 7:22 p.m.

Harvey County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Hesston EMS personnel attempted lifesaving measures on site. The driver of the vehicle, a female in her 30s, was later pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle went off the roadway, entering the north ditch. The vehicle then rolled several times before coming to rest.

It is not known why the vehicle left the roadway. It is unknown if the woman was wearing a seat belt. The accident remains under investigation.

The name of the driver has not been released pending notification of family.

One dead Sunday following single-vehicle accident near Hesston

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council will take up an appointment to fill a vacancy at its meeting Monday evening.

Dina Brislin is up for appointment to the City Council to replace Jeff Schenk, who stepped down immediately prior to being hired as the incoming City Administrator to replace the departing Joseph Turner.

Brislin is one of four candidates that have filed for the November 2023 election cycle.&nbsp;

Councilman John Fairbanks is the only incumbent to file as Councilman Jeremy Schmidt opted not to seek re-election.

The council also is due to take up a resolution to amend the Employee Handbook to reflect changes in vacation accrual formulas as well as other related provisions concerning vacation and sick time benefits.

The changes increase the amount of vacation time new employees will receive from one week to two weeks. It also decreases the annual service time threshold to allow employees to earn an extra week of vacation time.

It allows employees to roll over up to 40 hours of vacation time into the next year without losing it and allows some employees to cash out up to 40 hours of sick time per year.

The South Hutchinson City Council meets at 6 p.m. at the city offices at 2 South Main.

South Hutchinson City Council to appoint new member Monday

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Scott Boulevard between Andrew Avenue and Plum Street in South Hutchinson is closed for road repair until further notice. 

According to Don Brittain with Reno County Public Works, this is to fix a problem that has developed on either side of the new Scott Boulevard bridge.

"The road, right as it approaches the bridge, they didn't get that material underneath the blacktop compacted," Brittain said. "It's sunk. I'm making them go on both the north end and the south end, cutting it back about 14 feet, removing the asphalt and all the material underneath it, putting back in crushed concrete, compacting it and APAC will come back in and lay the road again right there in front of the bridge on both ends."

Brittain said the new bridge itself is fine. They hope to get the repair work done by the end of the week, weather permitting.

Scott Boulevard closed for repair

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education will have a hearing on the 2022-2023 budget before their regular meeting Monday night.

"This is a re-publish of this year's budget," said Shane Hecox with USD 313. The majority of school districts this year are having to republish, because, one major reason is, the state allowed Medicaid recertification to qualify for our at-risk numbers. Almost everybody, every district probably underestimated their at-risk numbers in their general fund budget, when they did their budget back in July."

At-risk numbers give schools additional funding for poor students.

"We actually had quite a few more additional virtual students, as well, that we under reported in our original budget," Hecox said. "It's still a big deal, but it's a lot lesser of a deal than it was in July and August, when we do our revenue neutral rate hearing and our budget hearing. It's important to note, I think, that this doesn't affect our local mill levy or anything like that. This is simply republishing to get all the general fund dollars that we possibly can."

Also, there is still one number out there that must be added in later, though they will publish for right around $17.4 million in general fund dollars.

"That is a little bit high, now," Hecox said. "We always want to overestimate a little bit. When Special Ed all comes out in the wash, we'll get our final, final number by the end of June, but this gives us enough buffer to get all of our general fund dollars."

The budget hearing is at 5:55 p.m. Monday at the Burkholder Administrative Center in Buhler.

USD 308 Board of Education to interview candidates

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission will continue the process of working through potential text amendments to the county's Zoning Regulations regarding commercial solar development at its meeting June 15.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/f640402b-da32-48a0-8f5f-424bbb343846">The planning commission was given time to work by Reno County Commissioners, as they put a moratorium on such development in place for the rest of 2023 at their meeting on April 11.</a>

No public comment on the regulations was taken at the April 20 meeting, as it took them more than two hours just to read through and discuss the first draft provided by staff and make some initial edits.&nbsp; No public comment on that topic was taken at the May 18 meeting or will be taken on June 15.

Unlike the May meeting, no other cases are planned before the board, so they should be able to focus solely on the solar topic.

The Reno County Planning Commission meets Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Reno County Public Works office at 600 Scott Boulevard in South Hutchinson.

County planning to continue solar regs writing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Red Cross collected over 26,000 fewer blood donations than needed in May to meet the needs of patients. 

The need for blood is constant, with someone needing a blood transfusion in the U.S. every two seconds. Platelet donors are especially needed at this time. The public can help ensure continuity for patients by making an appointment to give blood or platelets now and in the weeks ahead.

The next opportunity to give in Hutchinson is at the Juneteenth blood drive at the Stringer Fine Arts Center at Hutchinson Community College on Friday, June 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nickerson residents can give on Thursday, June 15, as there will be a blood drive at the Nickerson Community Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Friday, June 16, the Cosmosphere will celebrate Sally’s Night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

This event marks the 40th anniversary of Sally Ride becoming the first American woman in space. As part of the celebration, Cosmosphere curator Shannon Whetzel will share stories of Sally Ride, Valentina Tereshkova and Svetlana Savitskaya. Stories of women breaking barriers which are told through artifacts in the Cosmosphere’s collection.

Sally’s Night is a nationwide celebration of women in STEM led by the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. Sally’s Night honors Sally Ride’s legacy as an astronaut, physicist, educator and advocate for young people. In recognition of the 40th anniversary of Sally Ride becoming the first American woman in space, over 20 organizations across the United States will hold events focusing on women in science, technology, engineering and math. Sally’s Night is free to attend for Cosmosphere members and $15 for non-members.

Still time to buy tickets for Sally's Night at Cosmosphere

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Board of Education will go over the district's needs assessment in a special work session at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the district office.

The board will discuss an analysis of 2023 state assessment scores, accountability reports, attendance data, ACT/Pre-ACT Scores and&nbsp; community demographics.

The board will then engage in a&nbsp;Root Cause Analysis Activity, designed to identify causes of low achievement in the district and to determine what can be done to improve at the building, district and BOE level, respectively.

The Board will then go into regular session at 6 p.m. Monday and part of their regular agenda will be a calendar of events for the Series 2023 General Obligation Bonds that were approved by voters in May.&nbsp; 

The timeline assumes the Board of Education adopts the authorizing resolution for the sale at the July 10th BOE Meeting. 

This is followed by securing final interest rates and adopting the Bond resolution at the August 14th BOE meeting. 

This allows for the closing of the Series 2023 Bond Issue on August 31st.

Both meetings will take place at the USD 309 District office at 4501 West 4th.

USD 309 Board to go over Needs Assessment Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will see the agreement that lets them know which sections of road are now theirs because KDOT built the new K-14 at their meeting on Tuesday.

KDOT is transferring segments of old K-14 along with new alignments of Dean Road, West 95th Avenue, Old K-14 from Dean Road to the eastern Nickerson city limit, Old K-14 from the western Nickerson city limit to the Reno and Rice County line, new box bridge Br. No. 17-78-33.82 and various drainage structures on 56th, Dean Road, 82nd, 95th, Nickerson Road and Riverton Road.

In exchange for taking these sections of road over going forward, KDOT will pay the county $400,000. That money is due to the county within 30 days of the transfer date.

Also on the consent agenda for commissioners is the approval of the Annual Update for the South Central Solid Waste Management Plan (Reno, Rice, and Kingman Counties), and the approval of two Cereal Malt Beverage licenses for O'Brien's Marina.

Don Brittain will also give his annual Public Works report.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

County commission to see mileage transfer agreement Tuesday

TOPEKA&nbsp;—&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Commerce and the Patterson Family Foundation are pleased to announce the Engaging Placemaking for Innovative Communities (EPIC) pilot program. 

With a focus on arts-driven community development projects&nbsp;that&nbsp;enhance&nbsp;rural&nbsp;communities&nbsp;and&nbsp;enable additional partnership and connection, EPIC is launching in south-central Kansas under the leadership of the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC).&nbsp;

“The arts enrich communities and enhance the quality of life all across Kansas,”&nbsp;Lieutenant&nbsp;Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Support from&nbsp;the Patterson Family Foundation&nbsp;is helping us&nbsp;elevate Kansas communities by developing innovative spaces and high-quality, creative destinations that will drive new growth, particularly in rural areas and small towns.”&nbsp;

Groups from&nbsp;Hutchinson, Kingman, Lindsborg, Little River, Lyons,&nbsp;St. John,&nbsp;Stafford&nbsp;and&nbsp;Sterling&nbsp;will participate in the initial EPIC pilot.&nbsp;The program will help connect rural communities to one another, as well as facilitate partnerships with urban and micropolitan communities. The goal is to create a&nbsp;two-way street, where rural communities are uplifted through new, innovative&nbsp;collaborations.&nbsp;

EPIC is designed to strengthen regional connections between community leaders, artists and arts organizations for unexpected and innovative projects that address community challenges. By strategically harnessing resources and increasing partnerships, communities can hone their unique identities to become more competitive as families choose where to put down&nbsp;their&nbsp;roots and do business.&nbsp;

The pilot group was identified through a competitive application process. The EPIC team will work with them&nbsp;through a discovery and project planning phase, then provide technical assistance and support&nbsp;as the&nbsp;project&nbsp;is implemented.&nbsp;

“Artists are experienced creative problem-solvers and critical thinkers,”&nbsp;KCAIC&nbsp;Interim Director Kate Van&nbsp;Steenhuyse&nbsp;said. “EPIC will give communities the opportunity to work through artistic processes to meaningfully engage their communities and explore new possibilities. EPIC positions arts and culture as the backbone for vibrant and welcoming communities in Kansas.”&nbsp;

 </figure>IdeaTekVALLEY CENTER, Kan. — IdeaTek is expanding its popular ultra-fast fiber internet to thousands of Valley Center residents and businesses. This game-changing expansion will deliver gigabit speeds at affordable prices, empowering the community with a new era of connectivity.IdeaTek has long been dedicated to bridging the digital divide in rural areas by bringing fiber internet access to underserved rural communities. However, internet access challenges extend beyond rural areas, said Daniel Friesen, IdeaTek’s co-founder and chief innovation officer.&nbsp;"At IdeaTek, we believe every community and every Kansan deserves access to high-speed fiber internet, and we’re excited to be making it a reality in Valley Center,” Friesen said. “With fiber, we are providing a new foundation for innovation, creativity and progress in the age of the digital economy."IdeaTek has recently built fiber infrastructure in the nearby communities of Colwich and Halstead. The company is also currently building fiber internet to Sedgwick, Burrton and Cheney.&nbsp;Last year, IdeaTek deployed wireless internet to Valley Center and the surrounding rural areas. It was developed as a temporary solution until fiber could be built. Investment in fiber is a scalable solution for Kansas’ future growth, Friesen said. Fiber internet offers symmetrical upload and download speeds, scalable capacities for decades to come, enhanced reliability, and better pricing compared to current service providers in the city.“We build to the standards of the future, not today,” he said. "Fiber internet is the gold standard for internet connectivity, and we want to bring this technology to as many communities as possible.”IdeaTek's investment in Valley Center will inject approximately $4 million into the local economy, connecting over 2,000 homes and businesses. Construction is set to begin this month, bringing residents unlimited and uncapped speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second. Furthermore, IdeaTek offers the convenience of no-contract agreements, giving customers more flexibility.Valley Center City Administrator Brent Clark said the city is committed to providing residents with affordable essential services, including water, electricity and internet.&nbsp;“Ensuring every home in Valley Center has access to high-speed, reliable fiber internet is not only beneficial for the current generation but also for generations to come, enabling them to work and play seamlessly," he said. "Our mission as a city is to provide competitive offerings — high-speed internet at the most affordable rates, so our citizens can enjoy worry-free connectivity."To celebrate the build, IdeaTek will be sponsoring a chamber event and ribbon cutting on June 21.&nbsp; The IdeaTek team will be on hand to answer questions about service plans and the construction process. An informational meeting for city residents to learn more about the build will be scheduled in the coming weeks, as well.Based in Buhler, IdeaTek was founded in 1999 by Friesen and four high school friends. Today, the company employs over 140 Kansans and is continuing to grow.
