Newton cemeteries plan post-holiday cleanup

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Les Mason, a state Representative from McPherson, died after suffering a brain aneurysm on Friday. He had been hospitalized in Wichita.

Mason had served in the Statehouse since 2014. He leaves behind a wife, Victoria.

Long-time retiring McPherson State Senator Rick Wilborn filed for Mason's seat before the deadline Monday. No Democrat has filed in the race in House District 73. Mason had already filed to run before his illness.

Governor Laura Kelly has announced that she will call a special session later this month, but has not done the official proclamation yet.

Pipe replacement to close a section of Pretty Prairie Road

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Historic Fox Theatre's 2024 kids and classic summer movie series starts this week.

Josh Davies, Executive Director of Hutchinson's Historic Fox Theatre told Hutch Post about the selection process and how it works for each film in the kids and classic series.&nbsp;

"So basically I look at the films that are available from the last say 100 years of film making and the time the Fox has been open and try to pick out things that I think that the audience will really enjoy," Davies said. "Whether it be for the historic value or the sentimental value or seeing it on a big screen so that leads to several different avenues of all the movies that are out there which is a huge amount and of course we do take requests. A lot of people will send us or email us movies that they want to see and I always take that into consideration."&nbsp;

Cars is the first movie in the lineup for the kids series and Mary Poppins is the first in the classic series. Cars will play at the Fox on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Thursday at 10 a.m. Mary Poppins will play on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Development Administrator Penny Bettles said seeing a classic film at a historic venue is a whole different experience than seeing it in a movie theater.&nbsp;

"Yes, we don't have the reclining seats but the whole aesthetic of the building, the atmosphere, the whole experience is different and there's nothing comparable I don't think," Bettles said.&nbsp; "Not to mention, the prices are very affordable."

It's $4 a movie for the kids summer movie series or $16 for a summer movie pass. Classic movies are $5 per movie or $45 for a movie pass. There are eight movies in the kids series and 16 in the classic film series.&nbsp;

Entrepreneur Navigator hired at StartUp Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A project that has closed a portion of a major Hutchinson street is continuing forward.

"The water line near the roundabout on Severance and 23rd is being worked on, said Hutchinson Mayor Greg Fast. "We have hired a contractor to do some of that work. I believe the parts are in. It should be done, I believe by the end of June, and that's what we're telling folks but we hope it'll be sooner than that."

The storm cleanup also still continues in the city, though getting the limbs to the two areas where they are being collected is still the homeowner's responsibility.

"They're still open," Fast said. "You can bring your branches to the east parking lot of the Sports Arena and also down at Carey Park we have a little area there on South Plum. It's an issue. We have to balance the amount of services that we can provide with you know the amount of taxes that folks pay and there are certain expectations. I struggle a little bit with you know do we come pick branches up all over town? Is that something that should be expected of us? I think in this situation we've handled it correctly. I think we've tried to help in in the ways that we can."

The City of Hutchinson in partnership with Reno County Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), will have a clean up day on June 8.

Individuals and groups of volunteers will be needed to help with tree limb and brush removal for homeowners unable to do these tasks.

Mayor: Projects, storm recovery continue

GOESSEL, Kan. — On June 9, the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) Kansas Unit will dedicate its new cabinet shop, located at 604 E. Main Street, Goessel, Kansas from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A first-of-its-kind MDS initiative, the shop is already crafting and distributing kitchen cabinets to more than 85 volunteer-built homes across the U.S. annually.

The cabinet shop, which has recently expanded its warehouse, produces full sets of hardwood cabinets. The cost savings is about $3,000 per cabinet set compared to a purchased set.

Not only is the cabinet shop saving money—it is a model of local volunteer innovation and engagement for the nation.

Dedication day will include tours of the cabinet shop and warehouse plus a fundraising concert by September River, a family band featuring Jude and Doug Krehbiel and their daughter Stefanie (Krehbiel) Giffin. 

September River is based in central Kansas and their music incorporates elements of bluegrass, gospel, blues, acoustic rock, Irish, and folk. The concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. Please bring your lawn chairs.

The MDS Storm Encounter trailer will also be on hand for those who want to experience a simulated tornado—then see how MDS volunteers restore hope in communities.

Main Street, Goessel, Kansas from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A first-of-its-kind MDS initiative, the shop is already crafting and distributing kitchen cabinets to more than 85 volunteer-built homes across the U.S. annually.The cabinet shop, which has recently expanded its warehouse, produces full sets of hardwood cabinets. The cost savings is about $3,000 per cabinet set compared to a purchased set.Not only is the cabinet shop saving money—it is a model of local volunteer innovation and engagement for the nation.Dedication day will include tours of the cabinet shop and warehouse plus a fundraising concert by September River, a family band featuring Jude and Doug Krehbiel and their daughter Stefanie (Krehbiel) Giffin. <figure>

MDS Cabinet shop dedication is Sunday

Kan. — 
The&nbsp; Fiesta at Our Lady of Guadalupe in South Hutchinson is this weekend, June 8 and 9. They are back to a Saturday and Sunday event.

"It's a Saturday and Sunday event, with all of the activities that we have had before," said Father Eric Weldon. "We're going to have King Midas, the band, again on Saturday evening, with Mexican food throughout and closing the night with fireworks. Of course there's a beer garden. Then on Sunday, we'll have our Mexican food throughout the day, we'll have folkloric dancers and also some Mexican singers, Mexican food and we'll finish up the day with raffle drawings."

The raffle drawings have a little something for everyone.

"We have two types," Father Weldon said. "We have the cash raffle, which is one ticket and then we have individual raffle prizes. Cash raffle is $5000, $2500 and $1000. That is really good. We also have individual raffles, where you can just buy your ticket and put it in front of the prize that you want, such as a Chiefs package, K-State, KU packages, a golf outing, patio sets. We even have one prize that is all gift cards and food items all over the city of Hutchinson. That was really popular last year. People like that a lot."

All events are at the church at 612 South Maple in South Hutchinson.

2024 Fiesta in South Hutchinson is this weekend

EMMIE BOESE Hutch Post HAVEN, Kan. —The Haven City Council hosted a public hearing on Monday night on the&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/3a514d2e-a392-4838-a444-dea17e47b2d5">potential expansion of Haven Steel Products Inc. and the use of industrial revenue bonds for the project.</a> The council heard from several people in attendance on the project including Vice President Tom O’Brien of Haven Steel, Lauren Storm of Greater Hutch and bond attorney Dominic L. Eck of Gilmore Bell.&nbsp; The council agreed after much discussion on the project to have their legal team look over all information regarding the expansion before their next council meeting. Discussion and presentation at the meeting involved a cost benefit analysis of the expansion.&nbsp; &nbsp;"What I would recommend in that case would be to you know open the public hearing and then recess it until the next meeting,” Eck&nbsp;said. “Take any public comment from anybody that is here that wants to make comment on it in accordance with a published notice. Let them make their comment and then you can recess the public hearing until your next meeting and continue it at that point and consider the resolution following the public hearing at that next meeting."

Haven Steel expansion conversation to continue

Sometimes, life is heavy. A couple of months ago, I was in the throes of motherhood, having a newborn baby as well as three other little ones. Trying to balance my career, household duties, being a mother and a wife and helping on the farm after my maternity leave quickly became overwhelming. To put it lightly, I was exhausted.

 There were days where it felt easier to just stay in bed and not succumb to the pressures of the outside world. I am fortunate, in that when the stress and all the demands of the world seemed too heavy for me to carry, I had a team of family and friends to pick me up and serve as my anchor. I knew I had to lighten my load of responsibilities I was accountable for and also focus on the things that matter most to me.

Working full time during the day and coming home to work full time on the farm in the evening can be all-encompassing, and sometimes self-care can make one’s emotional and mental health be in a better place. For me, that is making sure I get up and exercise, and staying connected with my loved ones. For others, it may be seeing their therapist, eating healthy or practicing yoga.

Living and working in a rural area can be so enriching, but at times it may feel isolating. My husband and I made the conscious choice to live in a rural area, and I honestly cannot think of a better place to raise my children with the supportive community behind us. Rural life can be full of double rainbows and magical sunsets, but also moments where you feel like you are flying through endless clouds of turbulence, going up and down, questioning if it will ever stop.

Between the fluctuating market prices, weather conditions, fatigue and workload farmers and ranchers face, the stress can be daunting and at times may feel unconquerable. I know this narration is not uncommon, as more people than we truly know struggle — although at times one can feel entirely and completely alone. The most poignant epiphany is knowing just this. We are not alone.

Farm Bureau has recently partnered with a service called Togetherall, which is an anonymous online support group for those engaged in agriculture. It provides peer support to those who need others to bring them strength when times get challenging. Because it is anonymous, you may interact with others in the agricultural community who are halfway across the country but are there to provide encouragement and advice. Whether it is working through a farm transition, dealing with a loss, or just feeling overwhelmed and overworked, this medium of support can let you know that you, again, are not alone.

Coming off the heels of Mental Health Month, Kansas Farm Bureau has also made it clear they are actively working to break the stigma around mental health and are recognizing those who are engaging in their rural areas as leaders of the mental health movement. Through the Rural Minds Matter Advocate of the Year and Young Advocate of the Year awards, one can nominate someone who has worked to provide individuals the care they need in communities across Kansas. This may be your local extension agent, a therapist in your hometown or a social worker providing guidance and support. The hope is with this recognition, we as an agricultural community can acknowledge individuals who are dynamic in their ability to promote change and mental health awareness in their neighborhoods. CHENEY, Kan. — On Monday, Shanna&nbsp;Henry announced her campaign for State Senate in Senate District 34, representing Barber County, Kingman County, and Reno County. Senate District 34 is an open seat, following the retirement of Senator Mark Steffen. 

“I decided to run for Kansas Senate because our state no longer has the healthy, vibrant economy and social structure that I benefited from when I was growing up on a McPherson County farm. I believe that to get on track, our area needs a Senator who will listen to their constituents and work to bring opportunity back to rural Kansas. I plan to do that by working to fully fund our public schools, expand access to first-rate healthcare in rural Kansas, and eliminate the bureaucratic red tape that makes it harder for families to keep food on the table.”

Shanna&nbsp;Henry is from a fourth‑generation McPherson County farm family where she learned the value of hard work at an early age. She and her husband, Tim, raised their two children at their home of 29 years in Kingman County. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, and enjoyed a successful career in the telecommunications and solar energy industries.&nbsp;Shanna&nbsp;has served on the Kingman County Extension Executive Board, and on the Kingman County Economic Development Council.

Henry added, “There are too many Kansans falling through the cracks after falling on hard times. Coming from a fourth-generation farm family, I know how hard it is for farm families to maintain a living and good mental health in times of a sustained agricultural crisis. As Senator, making life more affordable for Kansas families will be my top priority.”

Henry running as Democrat for Kansas Senate District 34

DODGE CITY, Kan. — A former Lyons teacher was part of the 2024 class for the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame inducted over the weekend.

Dolores (Dee) Orth was part of a class of nine inductees for 2024.

The Class of 2024 is the 48th class inducted into the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame. 

Over 450 teachers have been inducted thus far. Each inductee must show evidence of outstanding teaching, positive interactions with students and parents, qualities that set the teacher apart from other educators, a continued pursuit of educational opportunities throughout their career, a willingness to share ideas by conducting workshops or classes for parents and teachers, involvement in community activities, educational recognition and awards and a philosophy of education that is a positive example for others. 

Nominees must have taught in Kansas for at least 25 years. Orth has taught for 44 years.

Lyons teacher is Teachers' Hall of Fame inductee

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The Hutchinson Municipal Band continues its 2024 Season, its 149th year of performances. Regular Tuesday concert performances are to be held from June 4, 2024, to July 9, 2024, on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. All performances of the Hutchinson Municipal Band are free of charge and open to all members of the public.

One of the oldest three bands in the state, the Hutchinson Municipal Band has consistently provided free music to the City of Hutchinson and Reno County since 1875. Even during war and pandemic, the band has offered free music to all citizens each summer for 149 years. The ensemble comprises musicians from Hutchinson, Reno County, and surrounding communities and counties.

Ms. Giles will conduct the June 11, 2024, concert. Mr. Meek will conduct the June 4, 2024, and July 2, 2024 “Patriotic Concert” performances. The recently completed Hutchinson Community College Pavilion, located in the courtyard behind Lockman Hall, will serve as the new performance location this summer for regular Tuesday performances. It will replace the recent concert space used at the Hutchinson Zoo. Limited handicap parking is available next to the concert venue on a first-come, first-serve basis. The band is excited to bring the sounds of summer to Reno County residents on the Hutchinson Community College campus for the entire community to enjoy.

Since its inception, the Band has provided summer concerts every year on Tuesdays, presenting a combination of concert and jazz band performances.

Tickets now on sale for Kansas State Fair Demolition Derby

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An ancient fable comes to Stage 9 with auditions this week.

"Androcles and the Lion, it's a musical about 90 minutes long, and it's for the entire family," said Kris Anshutz with Stage 9. "We decided to do it because this is our 10th anniversary at 9 South Main."

"There are at least three parts, maybe four, for high school students," Anshutz said.&nbsp; "Then there is a part for somebody in their 30s, a male in their 30s, 40s, or 50s, and then another male in his 50s or 60s, and then the lion, which could be any age as long as they're physically active."&nbsp;

This version is written in the style of Italian commedia dell’arte.

"This show is about friendship and loyalty, and friendship between two, you can't say people because one of them is a lion, but between two characters who are so totally different, but they can still be friends, and they can still be loyal to each other," Anshutz said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Auditions are June 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and June 8th from 11 a.m.&nbsp; to 2 p.m. People who want to sign up for for crews can come at 1:30 p.m. on June 8 at Stage 9 at 9 South Main in Hutchinson.

Auditions for next Stage 9 production Thursday, Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday will declare a portion of a downtown property blighted, but it's a good thing, because it is required for a grant process.

According to agenda documents, in 2019, Meredith and Nick Wolenhaupt purchased the historic Montgomery Ward building at 14 North Main. They seek to address significant issues with the building's upper floor, including leaking decorative windows and code violations in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. These problems have caused substantial damage to the original wood floor.

The Downtown Commercial Rehabilitation Program could help resolve these issues. The Wolenhaupts previously received a HEAL grant in 2023 from the Department of Commerce to address code and egress issues, enabling the use of the main floor and mezzanine spaces.

The South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) is preparing the CDBG Downtown Rehabilitation grant application and will manage the grant if awarded.

In order to get the grant, the council needs to approve a resolution declaring the upper floor of 14 North Main as blighted due to existing code violations. This declaration is necessary for SCKEDD to apply for the Downtown Rehabilitation Community Development Block Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce. The grant will help bring the floors into code compliance for development and new use by Meredith and Nick Wolenhaupt.&nbsp;

City Council to help with grant process for downtown building

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Kerpen with American Commitment believes that the Biden Administration's intent to switch the country to electric vehicles is fundamentally illegal, in addition to being currently impractical.

"If you typically, or frequently, or even occasionally, drive longer than the battery range on one of these electric vehicles, you're probably going to want an internal combustion vehicle, so you can pull into a gas station and refuel and continue on your way," Kerpen said. "This is why there's such a challenge in getting uptake beyond, you know, kind of the current seven, eight percent of sales that we've been at since last year. EV sales were growing very rapidly, which probably shouldn't be a surprise, considering we massively subsidized them, but they seem to have sort of flattened out, and I think that's because, for most people, it doesn't work as your main vehicle or certainly as your only vehicle."

It isn't clear how road maintenance would be paid for with a fully electric fleet, either.

"Some states have adopted higher registration fees for the electric vehicles to make up for the gas tax they don't pay," Kerpen said. "You know, the other issue, of course, is the electric vehicles tend to be much heavier than internal combustion vehicles because the batteries are heavy. They actually have more wear and tear on the roads than a comparable model of an internal combustion vehicle. Then, there also are other related issues with the weights being higher, like, you know, multi-level parking decks may not be able to fit as many cars from the weight rating if all of them are much heavier because they have, you know, the heavy batteries in them. There are a lot of sort of practical problems associated with what they're trying to do, not the least of which is that, you know, the mandates get way out ahead of where the market is."

According to the Biden Administration rules, for model year 2027, only 68% of all vehicles sold are allowed to be internal combustion vehicles. Right now it's over 85%.

If 85% of people want something, but only 68% of them are allowed to get it, well, we're going to have shortages. It's going to be hard to find an internal combustion vehicle, not in the far future, but in the very near future, just two years from now. And if you can find it, the price is probably going to be very high.&nbsp; Then of course, they ramp up the mandates to be much more draconian by model year 2032, only about 30% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. are going to be allowed to be internal combustion engines if the Biden rules stay in place.

There is a resolution in Congress to stop these rules, but either it has to pass, or there needs to be a change in administration to one with a philosophy that differs, or the transition to electric may happen faster than makes market sense at this point. <a href="https://www.americancommitment.org/campaign/support-cars-act-choice-in-automobile-retail-sales-act/">You can write to your representative to urge their support with a form at American Commitment</a>.

Kerpen: Biden Administration's EV mandates need to be stopped

MCPHERSON, Kan. — To proactively address a significant mosquito breeding issue exacerbated by recent moisture, the City of McPherson has scheduled selective spraying for mosquitoes in the parks, golf course, cemetery, and CHS on Tuesday June 4, 2024. 

With an expected break in the weather and favorable winds forecasted, the City of McPherson is taking these measures to ensure your safety. Spraying will only occur when wind speed is below 10 mph and no moisture is in the forecast.

Weather permitting, the entire City will be thoroughly sprayed on Thursday, June 6, 2024. The City will look at the need for an additional spray event soon. Spraying will be performed in the evening, starting between 8 p.m. and midnight in public areas and continue through the evening.

Residents, especially those with asthma or respiratory sensitivity, should remain indoors during spraying. To reduce indoor exposure, residents should close windows, doors, and vents and turn off fans and window-unit air conditioners (or set them to recirculate). They should also remove children’s toys and outdoor furniture from the outside, wash them before using them again, wash all produce, and wash skin and hair if exposed to the pesticide.

The City has been and will also be using Mosquito Dunks, larvicide tablets that can be dropped in standing water areas throughout public drainage areas across the City of McPherson.&nbsp;

The City will look at the need for an additional spray event soon. Spraying will be performed in the evening, starting between 8 p.m. and midnight in public areas and continue through the evening.Residents, especially those with asthma or respiratory sensitivity, should remain indoors during spraying. To reduce indoor exposure, residents should close windows, doors, and vents and turn off fans and window-unit air conditioners (or set them to recirculate). "The Hutchinson Community Blood Drive that we host with First Presbyterian Church, it will be Monday June 3 from 12 p.m. to 6 30 p.m.," said Tiffany Davison with the Red Cross. "It is also Tuesday June 4 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday June 5th 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the t-shirt is there. We also serve a meal. I believe we're still doing Sloppy Joes for this one and of course that early morning Wednesday you can grab one of those fresh cinnamon rolls if you donate then."

It's especially efficient if you can give a Power Red donation at the drive.

"We call those doubles and those donors also really like that sometimes they can give every 112 days instead of every 56 days," Davison said. "You have to be either O positive O negative or B or A negative and also have some certain height and weight requirements but yes if you're eligible for those Power Red appointments definitely get your name on those."

You can also still track your blood from when you give it to when a recipient gets it.

"If you download the blood donor app you can follow the path of your blood and it shows where it starts and processing and where it goes," Davison said.&nbsp; "That is definitely something that's very great about that blood donor app and people really enjoy that. If you just go to the App Store and you search Red Cross blood donor app it's gonna pop up it's gonna have that little red blood droplet. It's a great app to have on your phone."

Community blood drive this week

NEWTON, Kan.—&nbsp;Hillsboro Industries broke ground Friday on its new Newton manufacturing facility on East First Street.&nbsp;The Hillsboro-based truck bed and trailer manufacturer plans to build a&nbsp;56,000-square-foot facility to build aluminum livestock trailers and will create about 50 new full-time jobs in Newton.

The company bused in all its current employees from Hillsboro to participate in the groundbreaking Friday.

Lisa Kemph, Hillsboro Industries’ director of finance, said the company intends to maintain and enhance its facility in Hillsboro as it develops the Newton site. &nbsp;

 </figure>ERIN MCDANIEL City of NewtonNEWTON, Kan.—&nbsp;Hillsboro Industries broke ground Friday on its new Newton manufacturing facility on East First Street.&nbsp;The Hillsboro-based truck bed and trailer manufacturer plans to build a&nbsp;56,000-square-foot facility to build aluminum livestock trailers and will create about 50 new full-time jobs in Newton.The company bused in all its current employees from Hillsboro to participate in the groundbreaking Friday.Lisa Kemph, Hillsboro Industries’ director of finance, said the company intends to maintain and enhance its facility in Hillsboro as it develops the Newton site. &nbsp;Kemph said Newton’s current and planned housing development projects as well as the larger labor pool were key factors in choosing Newton as the site for their second facility.The new facility is expected to cost about $8.1 million to construct, with $2.8 million in furnishings and equipment.&nbsp;The site is located on East First Street immediately east of Prairie View, west of Hillside.The development agreement calls for the City and County each to contribute up to $125,000 for street improvements on First Street, including a turn lane and aprons to improve site access.
