NEWTON, Kan. — According to a Friday update from the City of Newton, debris removal from the May 19 storm continued this week, with City crews moving to Maintenance Area 3 on Thursday afternoon. The contractor, Alfred’s Superior Tree Service, is still working through Area 1. The City and Alfred's both plan to have crews working Saturday.&nbsp;

So far, City crews have collected 8,114 cubic feet of debris, and Alfred's has collected 2,548 cubic yards.&nbsp;The debris pile near Centennial Park is growing, and once conditions are right, City staff will begin burning as allowed per our state burn permit. Most trees downed from the cemetery were turned into mulch by Park staff since they were cedar trees.&nbsp; All other trees from around the city are either at or bound for the burn pile.

Staff is planning to do a second pass through Areas 1 and 2 (the worst hit) after the first round of collection is complete. Since Areas 3-7 have had longer to get debris to the curb, a second pass may not be necessary in these areas. Also, City staff need to get cleanup completed so regular seasonal maintenance can begin on streets.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Land Bank meeting is Tuesday June 4 at 2 p.m.

On the agenda for that meeting is an update on ARPA funding, an update on the case at 712 South Maple that was addressed last month, with Sasha Muniz agreeing to buy that lot for $500. There will also be discussion on the potential donation of 418 South Howard.

Matt Williams, Director of Planning, will hold a Planning, Zoning and Information session with the board, as well.

The meeting will take place at City Hall in the Executive Conference Room at 125 East Avenue B.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The winner of Hutchinson Salvation Army's donut day fundraiser ate not only a dozen but 15 donuts. The fundraiser raised a grand total of $4,600.46.

"It was exciting," Major Paul James said. "We had some last minute competitors that showed up. They signed up last night but I was focused on all the other details. But yeah it was an exciting time and then last minute guy ate 15 donuts."&nbsp;

Adam Keller, director of bands for Smoky Valley USD 400 in Lindsborg won the award for most donuts eaten. Major James won the people's choice award and Kathy Ireland of Prairie Star won the raising the most dough award at the event.

The money raised at the contest helps send kids to the Salvation Army's regional camp outside of Kansas City.&nbsp;

"It's a great opportunity that we can one, raise money for kids going to camp, raise awareness of just the continued need throughout the summer of helping families, because really it's ultimately giving kids a great opportunity," James said. "It's helping the parents, because you can't feed a child for $10 in a day, let alone for a whole week. That's part of our mission is to help families and children just in those different ways."&nbsp;

Monday is candidate filing, party change deadline

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As the calendar turns to the summer months, the Hutchinson Salvation Army is partnering with a local business again.

"Westlake Ace Hardware is doing a fan drive for us," Major Paul James said Thursday. "They're rounding up at the register. We depend on their support and our community support to help those families that don't have AC or just to help reduce their utility costs to circulate air in the home. It does make a huge difference to just have that extra fan to blow things around."

The Salvation Army in Hutchinson typically hands out a little over 300 fans each year.

"Last year we had to reduce the number," James said. "Usually it would, if you have a larger family, then we would give a couple fans out or three, depending on how large that family might be. Last year we were only able to do one fan per family. As you know, the cost of fans have gone up a great deal. Your donations don't quite stretch as far as they used to. We definitely need your support in doing that as well."

Summertime is the time when there is not a state program like there is in the winter. In the winter, there is the program that doesn't allow people to have their utilities shut off because of the cold, but that's not the same way in the spring and summer, so people are asking for additional utility assistance.

"Sometimes we get families in that just have a really huge electric bill, whether that's at the beginning of the summer, the end of the summer," James said. "Some go without AC altogether just for that purpose, just to save money. We've already had 40 families that have come in for assistance this month. We anticipate that'll probably be closer to 50 by the end of tomorrow."

2024-2025 season announced for the Fox Theatre

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Summer Reading Program at the Hutchinson Public Library is going on from June 1-July 31.

Read books, track your progress and earn prizes. Adults, Young Adults, and Youth can participate by signing up in the Beanstack App.

Adults who log four books or audio-books during the summer reading program can earn a Kansas State Fair gate ticket and entry into the Library's grand prize drawings.

7th-12th graders who log 10 hours of reading on the Beanstack App can earn $10 in Hutchbucks and a ticket to the Kansas State Fair. Youth can log weekly for a chance to win a weekly prize. Complete the challenge for a chance to win a grand prize.

When K-6th graders log 10 hours of reading on the Beanstack App, they will earn prizes-- a gate ticket to the Kansas State Fair, a youth pass for Exploration Place, and more.&nbsp;Plus they can log weekly for a chance to win a weekly prize and complete the program for a chance to win the grand prize.

Summer Reading program starts Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; It was World Otter Day on Wednesday, May 29 and the Hutchinson Zoo took time to celebrate the occasion.&nbsp;

"We wanted to make sure to kind of celebrate all of our awesome otters," Education Coordinator Sierra Wood said. "They are just a really cool native species."&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Zoo has three otters for folks to come see. Two of the zoo's otters are a breeding pair through the species survival plan through AZA.&nbsp;

The breeding mates had a chance to do a training demonstration for the public. A live feeding demonstration took place as well where zoo staff placed fish in the water. The otters had the opportunity to show how fast they can swim.&nbsp;

"Otters, if they are sprinting in the water, they can actually be even faster than Michael Phelps in his prime," Wood said. "They can be quick."&nbsp;

Hutchinson Zoo celebrates World Otter Day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson announced Thursday the appointment of J.K. Vann as the new Human Relations Officer. In this role, Mr. Vann will administer the Human Relations Ordinance, addressing anti-discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations. He will also implement and facilitate programs to foster harmonious relationships and belonging within the community.&nbsp;

Vann will play a crucial role in promoting an inclusive environment where all community members feel valued and heard. His work will focus on combating discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities for all residents. With a strong background in organizational management and leadership, Mr. Vann is well-equipped to lead efforts in creating a more diverse and welcoming Hutchinson.

Dave Sotelo, Strategic Growth Director, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are excited to have J.K. Vann join our team. His experience and dedication to promoting inclusion will be invaluable as we continue to make Hutchinson a more welcoming and diverse community.”

Mary Grace Clements, Interim City Manager, added: “Jonathan brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective. We look forward to him working with the Human Relations Commission to advance our new Strategic Plan and enhance our efforts in community outreach and inclusion.”

Mr. Vann said, “I am honored to take on this role and serve the Hutchinson community. I am committed to fostering an environment where every individual feels valued and heard, and I look forward to collaborating with community leaders Mr. Vann brings over five years of experience in organizational management and leadership, with a background in accounting, administration, and personnel development. His professional journey includes roles at FedEx Ground and Olathe Health Professionals, where he developed a keen understanding of operational efficiency and employee engagement. Mr. Vann has served in several ministerial roles and is currently a pastor of Foundation of Life Ministries and is dedicated to his ongoing education in social work at Fort Hays State University. Mr. Vann’s first day will be June 4th, 2024.

City of Hutchinson welcomes new human relations officer

BARTON AND STAFFORD COUNTY— A resurfacing project suspended last year for the winter will resume on U.S. 281 in Barton and Stafford counties on Friday, May 31.

The final phase of the Kansas Department of Transportation project involves a chip seal and pavement marking on the remaining 11 miles of the project. The work is expected to begin at Southeast 30th&nbsp;Road in Barton County and end at the K-19 junction south of Great Bend in Stafford County.

The work is expected to be completed around June 12.

During the work, traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot car, and motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and prepare for delays of up to 15 minutes.

Venture Corp., of Great Bend, is the primary contractor for the $1.57 million project.

Final phase of U.S. 281 project in Barton, Stafford counties to begin Friday

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp; The Newton City Commission this week approved a settlement with MetroPlains Properties on a loan used for the development of Lincoln Park Apartments. 

In 2002, the City received Community Development Block Grant funds from the State that were issued as an interest-free loan to MetroPlains to help redevelop Lincoln School into income-qualified apartments. The company since paid $5,100 on the $200,000 loan. In December 2023, the company asked the City Commission to consider forgiving $94,900 of the loan; the Commission rejected the request, and the City moved forward with foreclosure.

The City Commission on Tuesday agreed to accept MetroPlains’ follow-up offer to pay $169,900 on the remaining $194,900 debt. This releases the City’s lien on the property and facilitates its sale, which has been pending for some time. Commissioners said they saw this as a reasonable offer that will save further legal costs and will resolve the issue quickly for the benefit of the apartment residents.

In 2020, Petersen published the online&nbsp;Gunnar Widforss Catalogue Raisonné, which lists more than 1,200 works by the Swedish-American painter. Sterling to host county wide garage sale

Each generation in a long-time farming family adapts to the challenges and opportunities of their time. Growing up on his family’s operation south of Hays, Wyatt Grabbe watched his father, grandfather and uncle shift from conventional tillage to no-till, experiment with cover crops and biologics and take advantage of the latest varieties and technology. As he prepares to enter his second year at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, he plans to take what he’s learned in his associate’s degree program in precision agriculture back to the farm - making him a great candidate for the David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship.&nbsp;

“The David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship continues a legacy of dedication to our mission at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin.

“David was passionate about continuous innovations by and for Kansas wheat farmers, and this year’s scholarship recipient certainly fits that mold.”&nbsp;

The David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship funds one $1,000 scholarship to a current undergraduate or graduate student from Kansas who is pursuing a career in the field of agriculture. Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at any two- or four-year college or university in Kansas.&nbsp;

The scholarship memorializes the legacy of David Radenberg, a lifelong wheat farmer from Claflin, where his family has farmed for more than 100 years. He represented central Kansas on the Kansas Wheat Commission from April 2011 to March 2020, including serving as chairman from August 2018 to May 2019. Radenberg was also a founding board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

In 2013, Radenberg also visited multiple Pacific Rim countries to promote U.S. wheat. The contrast between third-world poverty he saw in thriving modern cities left an impression on him and reinforced his support of wheat research to help feed a hungry world.

Grabbe’s family has also embraced the latest wheat research to aid their operation. The family has planted wheat test plots for Bayer CropScience and K-State Research and Extension. His father and uncle have entered the National Wheat Yield Contest, organized by the National Wheat Foundation. In the 2022 contest, his uncle John took second place in Kansas dryland wheat with an entry of WestBred WB4422 that yielded 103.24 bushels per acre, beating out his father Matt, who placed third with an entry of WestBred WB4792 that yielded 97.88 bushels per acre. An entry of the same variety that yielded 79.18 bushels per acre earned his father second prize in Kansas in the 2023 contest.&nbsp;

“These two people have inspired me to come back to the farm after pursuing my associate’s degree in precision agriculture,” Wyatt wrote in his application essay.&nbsp;

In addition to the farming operation, he helps with another family venture called Stone Post Ag, which sells Beck’s Hybrids seed, Win biologics and Opti Lube fuel additive. Grabbe hopes to further add to the family’s business diversification by adding soil sampling, aerial mapping by drone and potential crop scouting - after completing his

degree program at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland.&nbsp;

“I want to be able to help farmers make more efficient and healthier choices when it comes to crops,” he wrote. “I still have a lot to learn, but my strong work ethic and my love for farming and cattle will keep driving me to do better for my family, our operation and, in the future, my customers.”&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The donut day fundraiser for the Hutchinson Salvation Army is coming up Friday morning, May 31.

"At our thrift store, we'll be having our donut eating competition," said Major Paul James. "It's a lot nicer to be outside and not inside. Our first year here, we did have it inside and it was a little stuffy, but it was a great time anyway."

"Jared Heinen has won the past two years. Actually, not by much, but he's eaten a lot. Either way, last year he ate 11 and a half donuts in five minutes. That's quite the feat. My personal best is six, so that'll tell you something. Then the next one is People's Choice Award. Those who donate online or get donations online the most in that, then they win. Then, Raising the Most Dough, which is people that bring cash or checks the day of the event, whoever has the most in their little bucket in front of them, then they win that trophy."The Salvation Army has a regional camp just outside of the Kansas City area. The money raised helps send kids to that camp."It's actually one of my first jobs," James said. I worked there four summers as a teenager and then when I was in college as well. We're looking forward to the opportunity to send kids to camp. It's only $10 if they use our promotional code, our discount code, which is HUTCH24. Our main goal is to make it affordable to send kids to camp.
