Closings and delays for Feb. 20

The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a residence in the 200 block of West B. Ave for the report of a structure fire. 

First arriving crews found a 2.5 story multi family residence with heavy smoke and fire showing from the 1st and 2nd floors. Crews attempted an aggressive interior attack through the front entry and were met with excessive storage conditions and high heat. 

Crews were able to find a large area of fire and started extinguishment. As more crews arrived on scene, the fire escalated and entered the attic. All crews were removed from the interior of the structure and a defensive attack ensued. Crews used aerial operations and multiple handlines to get the fire under control. Fire was considered controlled in 1.5 hours.

The home was occupied by 7 people and multiple dogs. 4 were home at the time of the fire. 4 of the occupants were seen by Reno County EMS, 1 of which had minor medical concerns. No firefighter injuries were noted.

Investigation of the fire showed that a space heater started the fire. The home is a total loss displacing all 7 occupants. Red Cross provided assistance.

HFD crews worked in single digit temperatures for multiple hours. HFD appreciates the kind help from the many neighbors that stepped up and assisted with warm drinks.

HFD reminds homeowners to make sure that all space heaters have a 3-foot clear area to operate in and that the homes electrical system is capable of handling the power draw.

Southside fire displaces 7

MANHATTAN — As winter settles in with freezing temperatures and snowfall, pet owners need to take extra precautions to keep their furry friends safe and warm. Kansas State University's Susan Nelson, clinical professor and veterinarian in the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Hill's Pet Health and Nutrition Center</a>, shares essential cold weather care tips to ensure pets stay healthy throughout the season.

Pets should be brought inside when temperatures drop, especially those unaccustomed to cold weather and very young or senior animals, Nelson said. For dogs with thick coats, consider placing them in a cooler room or insulated garage to prevent overheating. Gradually acclimate pets to indoor temperatures with short visits before extended stays.

Some pets may feel anxious indoors. Using a crate or carrier can ease this transition. Ensure easy access to food and water and place nervous pets in a quiet, secure area. If anxiety persists, consult your veterinarian about potential calming options.

Pets that remain outdoors require proper shelter.

"Dog houses should be snug to retain heat, with the entrance facing south or west to block the wind," Nelson said. "Clean straw or hay provides better insulation than blankets, which quickly lose their effectiveness when trampled. Outdoor cats also benefit from a warm, sheltered area."

Check outdoor water bowls frequently to prevent freezing, or use a heated water bowl. Nelson said pets living outside may need more calories to maintain body heat during cold spells.

Short-haired dogs benefit from sweaters made of cotton, fleece or natural fibers. Avoid sweaters with small, decorative elements that can be chewed off and ingested. After walks on salted or chemically treated surfaces, rinse pets' paws to prevent irritation or toxic ingestion. Booties can also protect paws from ice balls and harsh chemicals.

"Young, senior and arthritic pets are more prone to cold-related issues like hypothermia," Nelson said. "Keep very young and very old pets in warm, cushioned areas indoors. Speak with your veterinarian about pain management and therapeutic diets for pets with osteoarthritis."

Nelson also advised to be aware of the following hidden dangers:

•&nbsp;Car engines: Outdoor cats may seek warmth on car engines. Bang the hood or honk the horn before starting the vehicle.

• Antifreeze: Even a small amount of antifreeze is toxic to pets. Clean up spills immediately and opt for pet-safe products containing propylene glycol.

• Frostbite: Ears, paws and noses are susceptible to frostbite. Limit outdoor exposure in extreme cold and consult your veterinarian if you suspect frostbite.

With preparation and care, Nelson said pet owners can help their companions stay safe and comfortable during winter's chill.

K-State veterinarian offers cold weather care tips to keep pets safe this winter

SEDGWICK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE&nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, is investigating the death of an inmate following an apparent suicide attempt at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility.

On Feb. 18, 2025, at approximately 6:51 p.m., detention staff located an unresponsive 43-year-old male inmate in a cell within the facility. Detention deputies and on-site medical staff immediately initiated lifesaving measures. Sedgwick County EMS and the Wichita Fire Department responded and continued resuscitation efforts. The inmate was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:32 p.m.

Per Kansas state law, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified and, with assistance from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division, is conducting an investigation into the incident. The family of the inmate has been notified of his death.

The inmate had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since Feb. 18, 2025, on charges related to aggravated assault and interference with law enforcement.

This marks the second in-custody death in Sedgwick County this year.

No further details are available at this time. Additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.

🎧 AP Early Morning Sports Wrap in a Minute for February 19th, 2025

 Pratt Regional Medical Center Chief Executive Officer, Tammy Smith, met with PRMC employees this morning for a quarterly update and employee forum. During the meeting, employees learned PRMC’s Urgent Care Clinic will be closing at the end of business on Feb. 28.

“This decision did not come lightly, and we hope the Urgent Care employees will consider applying for open positions in other areas of the organization as this decision does not reflect upon the care they provide, but rather the increased expenses, decreased reimbursement, and low utilization,” Smith explained. 

PRMC’s critical financial situation did not come about overnight. Smith explained to staff, “We have been operating at a loss for about the past 10 years.” PRMC is not alone. According to the Kansas Hospital Association, studies in 2023 showed 60 Kansas hospitals at risk of closing; 2024 data is expected to show even more hospitals in Kansas are at risk for closing. PRMC’s need to cut expenses and increase revenue is critical.  

Smith explained that reimbursement rates for hospitals are not increasing, but expenses are steadily increasing. Hospitals are paid differently than other business. They can’t just raise their rates to keep up with inflation. Instead, PRMC is dependent on payments from Medicare, Medicaid and other payors whose payments often do not cover the cost to provide the service. Further, PRMC must treat patients that can’t afford the care. “Although we are not-for-profit, we do need to make a profit in order to pay for things such as equipment and wages,” Smith said. PRMC is making strides to change the trajectory. In addition to closing Urgent Care, PRMC is evaluating service agreements, software and contracts, eliminating as many as possible. Staffing with agency nurses has also been decreased. A hiring freeze of nonessential positions, a wage freeze, and stop to all nonessential travel and education has been implemented.  

“There will be further asks for expense reduction in some departments,” Smith said. “Specific amounts&nbsp;will be finalized in the coming days.” Smith reassured staff, “We are confident that by working together to reduce costs in the immediate future, we will weather the storm and come out stronger.” 

PRMC is working diligently to bring in new services to generate new revenue without spending a lot to get the service going. For example, a mobile PET Scan may soon be available in Pratt. This generates revenue for the hospital because of the additional testing and it benefits the patients who need the service. Replacing the dermatology and ENT service lines is also on the radar. Even though those services were provided by outside physicians, they are seeing patients in Pratt, performing procedures, ordering tests and generating revenue for the hospital. 

“I plan to continue to communicate changes as decisions are made,” Smith explained, recognizing some of these decisions negatively affect staff and those are tough decisions to make. “These are some tough times, but I truly believe we will recover and thrive.”

During the meeting, employees learned PRMC’s Urgent Care Clinic will be closing at the end of business on Feb. 28.“This decision did not come lightly, and we hope the Urgent Care employees will consider applying for open positions in other areas of the organization as this decision does not reflect upon the care they provide, but rather the increased expenses, decreased reimbursement, and low utilization,” Smith explained. PRMC’s critical financial situation did not come about overnight. Smith explained to staff, “We have been operating at a loss for about the past 10 years.” PRMC is not alone. According to the Kansas Hospital Association, studies in 2023 showed 60 Kansas hospitals at risk of closing; 2024 data is expected to show even more hospitals in Kansas are at risk for closing. PRMC’s need to cut expenses and increase revenue is critical. Smith explained that reimbursement rates for hospitals are not increasing, but expenses are steadily increasing. Hospitals are paid differently than other business. They can’t just raise their rates to keep up with inflation. With the recent weather-induced school cancellations, the Nickerson School District will need to make a few adjustments to our attendance calendar to ensure we meet the state-required hours for this school year. 

All previously scheduled Early Release Days will be converted to full attendance days. Those dates included: &nbsp;- Feb. 21 &nbsp;- March 14 &nbsp;- April 17 &nbsp;- May 2

Instead of a 12:40 release,  each of these days will be a regular 3:25 release.

The City of Burrton has been informed by KMGA of the need to reduce natural gas usage due to the current weather conditions leading to an underperformance in gas supply. As a result, we kindly request that each customer conserves gas wherever possible.

Our natural gas supplier may experience a loss of gas due to freezing gas fields, which could result in some residents being unable to heat their homes. Additionally, this situation may cause an increase in gas rates.

Please be assured that the City of Burrton is working diligently to stay informed and to keep our citizens updated. If natural gas customers temporarily lose their gas services, a warming shelter will be made available. The store’s physical location officially closed Feb 18th, 2025. This move comes in response to ongoing economic challenges and shifting consumer trends. 

The furniture and mattress retail environment is tied heavily to home sales and consumers moving and as recently reported by the National Association of Realtors, 2024 was the weakest showing for home sales since 1995, edging out the terrible year for sales in 2023. 

“The decision to close our brick-and-mortar store was not an easy one,” said Owner Kevin Rule. “We are incredibly grateful for the support and loyalty our customers have shown us over the years. While this marks the end of an era for our physical location, it also opens new opportunities for us to serve our customers in a more flexible and affordable way.”

We are still accepting appointments for our newly launched Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Appointments are available on select days from Feb. 10 through Mar. 31.

The VITA program, operated by the IRS for over 50 years, provides free tax help to qualified individuals who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. This will be the first tax season that MCCF will serve as a VITA site, with all volunteer tax preparers being locally sourced.

To qualify for the program, individuals must meet one or more of the following criteria: • People who generally make $67,000 or less • Persons with disabilities • Limited English-speaking taxpayers

Note that VITA services are available for current-year (2024) tax returns only.

Appointments will be one hour long, with two volunteers reviewing each return. Available appointments are limited and must be scheduled in advance.

Appointment times: • Mondays: 5:30–7:30 PM. • Wednesdays: 1–4 PM. • Thursdays: 2–4 PM

The Foundation will also be open one Saturday, from 9 AM to noon, on March 15.
