🎧 AP Early Morning Sports Wrap in a Minute for Feb. 24th

UPDATE:&nbsp; Due to the incident on Saturday morning, Stage 9 has added an additional audition for Monday evening.&nbsp; The auditions will begin at 6:30 p.m. and go until at least 8 p.m.

Stage 9 is auditioning for April performances of “A Piece of My Heart”. &nbsp;The date of the performances is the weekend after Easter, April 24-26 with matinee on April 27. &nbsp;Performances will be at Stage 9, which is at 9 South Main here in Hutchinson. &nbsp;

A Piece of My Heart is a drama based on women’s experiences in Vietnam and after. &nbsp;Nurses, USO, army intelligence and Red Cross. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Kris Anshutz will be having auditions on Thursday the 20 from 6:30 to 8 PM and Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM. If you are not available at those times you can call her at 620-664-1489 and set up a time. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Rehearsals will begin on Feb. 24 with rehearsals set for Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. &nbsp;They will be flexible in the beginning. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Here are the roles that they are filling for this production. &nbsp; 1 Male – Age 20-40. He will play all the male roles and will not be needed at all rehearsals&nbsp;&nbsp; 6 Female parts will be cast. •&nbsp; A black woman from age 30-50 •&nbsp; An Amerasian from age 20-40 •&nbsp; A woman singer preferably a guitar player from age 20-40 •&nbsp;&nbsp;And three more women to play nurses from age 20-40.

UPDATE: Stage 9 seeks actors for April performance of "A Piece of My Heart"

Detroit (AP) —Ford is recalling about 240,000 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs due to a problem with seat belt anchors that were improperly secured.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a loose seat belt or seat belt buckle may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Ford said it is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to the defective seat belt assemblies.

The Explorers and Aviators in question are model years 2020 and 2021. The recall includes about 216,000 Explorers and 24,000 Aviators.

Owners of the vehicles in question are expected to be notified by Ford in late March and will be instructed to take their vehicles into a Ford or Lincoln dealer for inspection. If the anchor bolts are found to be improperly secured, the components will be replaced for free.

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 with a recall number of 25S09.

They can also contact the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go online to nhtsa.gov.

8 a.m. Sunday UPDATE from Hutchinson Fire Department:&nbsp;The Hutchinson Fire Department has had discussions with Kansas Gas this morning and the evacuation area has been minimized to the following area. Main Street from Avenue D down to Avenue G 1 Block East and West of Main Street on Avenue E. This includes all businesses on both sides of Main Street and 1 residential home on Avenue F. Currently there are 18 businesses and 1 residential home without gas service. If you live outside of the stated area, you may return to your home.

Kansas Gas will continue to have a large presence in this area for the next couple of days.  We ask that you continue to avoid the area as work is being done to remedy the situation.  Kansas Gas is continuing to monitor the area for gas and will continue throughout the next couple of days. 

Overnight, crews have made significant progress and all hands are working on fixing the situation. 

If residents in the area are concerned about their home having gas inside, Kansas Gas has a hotline to call.  Please call 888-482-4950 and reference the Hutchinson incident.  Kansas Gas has technicians in the area that will come by and monitor your home for gas.  If you feel you have a gas emergency, please contact 911 for HFD response.

9 p.m. UPDATE: Officials tell us that as of 8 p.m., the evacuation zone has been reduced to the area bounded by Avenue C to Avenue F, and Walnut to Adams.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The evacuation will remain in place until morning while Kansas Gas Service repairs the gas main. Once that repair is complete, Kansas Gas Service will contact each resident to restore service.&nbsp;

ORGINAL POST: Shortly before 9:30 a.m., the Hutchinson Fire Department said they were called to the area of B and Main for reports of a natural gas odor. Responding crews could not find a source at that location so they moved their way down Main Steet.&nbsp;

When they arrived to the corner of Avenue E and Main Street, they saw the gas coming up through the road and sidewalk.&nbsp; They entered the business there and their monitors activated.

Crews noted that all the occupants of the building were out, and they exited the building and within 30 seconds the building exploded.&nbsp;

Officials said that the fire is being fed by a 10-inch natural gas line. Officials
say that the body of the fire is under control, but the street and fire remains
on fire due to the gas leak.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Fire Department crews were forced to take a
defensive stance and are using unmanned water streams to fight the fire.&nbsp; 

Mayor Stacy Goss said that all the City of Hutchinson fire
crews are deployed along with crews from Reno County Fire District Number 3,
Buhler and South Hutchinson fire departments. 

The area between Avenue A and Frank Hart Crossing and Popular
Street and Adams Street are currently under an evacuation.&nbsp; 

There has been an evacuation and warming center set up at
the Salvation which is located at 700 North Walnut. 

Kansas Gas and Evergy have crews on the scene monitoring the
evacuated buildings. Kansas Gas released a statement to Hutch Post:

“Our crews have responded to 428 S. Main in Hutchinson,
Kansas and are working with the Hutchison Fire Department and local emergency
responders. More information will be released once officials have completed
their investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The primary concern of Kansas Gas Service is safety. As a
precautionary measure, the area around the location is being isolated and
secured.&nbsp;

If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately then
call 911 and our Emergency Line 888-482-4950. Do not use any electrical
equipment such as phones, garage doors, or light switches until you are a safe
distance away from the odor.”

We are scheduled to receive another update from the
Hutchinson Fire Department.&nbsp; We will
update this story as new information becomes available.

UPDATED: Hutchinson Fire Department battles southside fire, evacuation zone set up

RENO COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just before 8 a.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Ford F150 driven by&nbsp;Kendrick Dale&nbsp;Nisly, 24, Hutchinson, was eastbound on Kansas 61 at South Peace Road. 

The pickup rear-ended a 2001 Chevy Suburban driven by Kyla Jeanne&nbsp;Thornsley, 33, Arlington, who was stopped to make a left turn. The impact pushed the SUV into oncoming traffic. A westbound 2016 Chevy Cruze driven by Carlee Jo&nbsp;Davidson, 19, Partridge, struck the Suburban on the&nbsp;&nbsp;passenger side.

EMS transported&nbsp;Thornsley and&nbsp;Davidson to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Nisly was not injured.&nbsp;Davidson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The purpose of this Health Alert is to inform the community about a recent unusual spike in overdoses. There were four overdoses within a 24-hour period. The overdoses are suspected to involve Fentanyl and other Opioids.

The Reno County Health Department has been tracking overdoses and trends since Oct. 1 of 2020.  Naloxone (Narcan) is effective for any Opiate and therefore it is highly recommended that people carry it and understand how to use it, due to the nature of Opiates and the unsafe and toxic drug supply that includes the presence of Fentanyl and the suspicion of Xylazine. Please contact the Reno County Health Department for education on these varying and emerging community health issues at 620-694-2900.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – An idea spawned at Kansas State University to support rural grocery stores in transition to new ownership has grown into a network of resource providers in 11 states.

Clara Misenhelter, a program manager with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ruralgrocery.org/">K-State’s Rural Grocery Initiative</a>, credits an online course for helping to address a growing concern in rural communities.

“In 2021, the Rural Grocery Initiative surveyed rural Kansas grocers and found that nearly 1 in 4 planned to retire within five years,” Misenhelter said. “Of those, the vast majority – 73% – did not have a plan for how store ownership would transition after their retirement.”

Beginning last year, the Rural Grocery Initiative hosted an online course to train those already working in rural communities with a baseline knowledge around what it takes to successfully transition a rural grocery store.

In 2024, 19 students in 11 states – Kansas included – completed the course, according to Misenhelter.

“Supporting grocery store owners through times of transition is critical to ensuring that rural communities retain access to their local grocery stores,” Misenhelter said.

Between 2008 and 2018, 1 in 5 Kansas grocery stores closed, a trend that Misenhelter said is also seen across the United States.

“Rural grocery stores are critical infrastructure in rural communities,” Misenhelter said. “Locally owned grocery stores contribute to their community’s health, economy and society. Keeping these stores open is critical.”

The online course is designed for extension professionals, community economic developers and others who provide resources and support to rural grocery stores across the country. Misenhelter said classes address such topics as building relationships with grocery store owners and managers; transition planning; business valuation; and other tools to support rural grocery stores.

“The assignments in the course are intentionally designed to have real-world applications,” she said.

Hutchinson Community Foundation announces the promotion of Wendy Skellenger to director of communications and development.

Skellenger joined the community foundation in 2018 as communications officer, helping expand awareness of the foundation’s mission and brand through marketing and storytelling.

In her new role, she will join the foundation’s leadership team, lead the organization’s internal and external communications strategy, and collaborate with staff to enhance donor services and spearhead high-impact development systems and initiatives.

She is an alumna of Leadership Reno County and is a past board secretary of Kansas Professional Communicators.

Prior to the foundation, Skellenger worked for 11 years in various editing and supervisory roles at The Hutchinson News.

A Nickerson native, she is a graduate of Wichita State University.

“I’m excited for this new opportunity and look forward to working alongside our excellent team at Hutch CF to expand and strengthen our ability to inspire philanthropy and, ultimately, serve the needs of Reno County,” she said.

K-State horticulture expert suggests gardening activities to kick the winter blues

Nala is about 6-7 months old. Her and her 3 surviving siblings were rescued from a very rough start at life, doomed to live whatever time they had left forgotten about outside like some of their siblings. Skin and bones, terrified of everything. 

While Nala has sure gotten some nourishment, she is lacking socialization, so she was recently FINALLY moved to a new foster that isn't her OG Foster Mom. This now finally allows all pups to be separate and learn to fly on their own! 

Nala is a ZOOMIE queen. She loves to run, no FLY all around the house! She loves to be picked up and held like a baby . She absolutely loves to rough house with other dogs outside. She likes to chew on bones. Nala would do great with a patient and kind leader for her human as well as for a doggy sibling!

The Newton Fire Department battled a shed fire near Emma Creek Road and West First.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Inital units responding to the fire reported that one shed was fully involved on their arrival.&nbsp; A nearby adjacent barn was protected by the fire crews and remained standing.&nbsp;

Crews worked the scene in temperatures that were below zero and had water supply issues when the valves on a water tender were frozen.&nbsp;

Hesston, Walton Halstead and Sedgwick fire crews provided mutual aid to Newton to fight the fire.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Now that the winter storm has moved on, we invited Hutchinson Public works director Cecil Weible to talk about the snow removal.   

He said that his crews have been busy.  They have had crews out twenty-four hours a day for the last three days.  

Temperatures made the difference in how they decided to treat the clean-up from the storm.  Because of the frigid temperatures, they elected to plow first.  

Weible said “In these temperatures salt takes a very long time to activate and work. “  

They concentrated on plowing first, get as much of the snow off the road.  After they got to the point where there was no more plowing to be done other than widening then they started to put the salt down.   

 Not only did they treat the roads differently, but they also handled the snow removal differently because of the snow type.   

They decided not to pre-treat this time. They said with the wind plowing and the snow type the pretreatment would have caused the snow to stick, and mother nature actually helped by blowing the snow off the roads.  

Now that the sun is out and warmer temperatures are ahead, there is a new concern that crews are prepared for.  

Once the snow starts melting, crews will keep salt on it.  The worst part is you have melting during the day, but at night it freezes, and you begin to have black ice. Crews will be out putting salt down, keeping the roads in that condition.

Public works director talks about response to snow storm

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Commerce announced today significant changes to its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) – Community Facilities program to allow a rolling application process, lower local match requirements and an expanded scope of eligible projects.

“This is a game-changer for Kansas communities,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “For decades, we’ve seen too many worthy projects stalled due to rigid deadlines and high local match requirements. By streamlining the process and reducing financial burdens, we’re ensuring that cities and counties — large and small — can bring transformative projects to life.”

The revamped CDBG – Community Facilities program opens the door for projects ranging from emergency sirens and ADA upgrades to new libraries and major park developments. Notably, the transition from an annual competition to a rolling application process means that cities and counties can apply for funding year-round, receiving decisions in a matter of weeks rather than waiting months for a single funding cycle. Additionally, the local match requirement has been reduced from its normal 25% to a 10% match for small projects and 20% for large projects.

“This continues the significant shift in the way the Kansas Department of Commerce is approaching community development” Commerce Assistant Secretary Matthew Godinez said. “In 2024, we rebranded the Community Development Division as the Quality Places Division to better reflect our mission of fostering vibrant, connected and resilient communities. We’re removing bureaucratic roadblocks and getting critical dollars where they’re needed faster. This is about leveling the playing field so that smaller or lower-income communities have a real shot at funding transformational projects.”

Rolling Application Process: Applications will be accepted year-round starting May 1, with monthly reviews and grant agreements executed within five business days of approval.

Small projects ($50,000 to $210,000) require only a 10% local match. Examples include: •&nbsp;Accessibility and ADA Improvements •&nbsp;Parks and Recreational Facilities •&nbsp;Community Centers and Public Infrastructure &nbsp;Public Safety and Emergency Service

Large projects ($210,001 to $1.5 million) require only a 20% local match. Examples include:&nbsp; •&nbsp;Public Infrastructure and Facility Development • Public Safety and Emergency Services •&nbsp;Libraries and Educational Facilities

Pre-Application for Readiness Screening: Cities and counties can submit a short pre-application starting April 1, 2025, to gauge project eligibility and receive feedback within five business days. The full application stage opens on May 1, 2025.

Flexible Project Categories: Communities can apply for any eligible CDBG-funded project, from public safety improvements to large-scale community facility developments.

By expanding access and accelerating the funding process, the Kansas Department of Commerce is ushering in a new era of community investment across the state.

“This is about empowering Kansas communities,” Toland said. “No longer will cities and counties be forced to wait for a single shot at funding each year. We’re making the process flexible, fair, transparent and focused on results.”

Commerce Unveils Groundbreaking Overhaul of Community Development Block Grant Program

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 100 block of North Main on the east side. Today's article focuses on the 122 N. Main address.

Before the current building was reconfigured, it was the P. Martin Dry Goods store at 118-122 N. Main.

Then in 1906, J.W. Jenkins started a music store with his sons and the building became a single store at 122 N. Main. The first photo shows that music store in 1922 during an auto parade.

Jenkins was at that location for 20 years.

In 1928, Jones-O'Neal Shoe Co. started in this location and was there until 1986 for a 58-year run. The second photo shows Jones-O'Neal during the 1946 Prairie Pow-Wow.

The third photo shows the Jones-O'Neal storefront in 1960.

The fourth photo shows Jones-O'Neal in 1975 with a different storefront.

In 1988, Payton Optical moved there after a long occupancy at the Wolcott Building, which was just being razed. They were at the 122 N. Main location for 29 years of their 70-year family run.

In 2017, Greg Payton retired and sold the business to the Specs Eyewear Co. of Wichita. The fifth photo shows the 122 N. Main location today, still Specs, with the property under the JGP Properties ownership.

Main address.Before the current building was reconfigured, it was the P. Martin Dry Goods store at 118-122 N. Main.Then in 1906, J.W. Jenkins started a music store with his sons and the building became a single store at 122 N. Main. The first photo shows that music store in 1922 during an auto parade.<figure>

Main location for 29 years of their 70-year family run.In 2017, Greg Payton retired and sold the business to the Specs Eyewear Co. of Wichita. The fifth photo shows the 122 N. As of last week, 26 bills related to elections had been introduced into the state legislature this session. Four of these bills have passed one of the houses — two in the Senate and two in the House.

Three of these bills are functionally redundant as they do not change the state’s status quo and instead seem to be driven mostly by political posturing. However, SB 4 would drastically change the state’s current approach to mail ballots.

SB 4 would require that voters return mail ballots by 7pm on Election Day. Under current Kansas law, mail ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and received within three days are allowed to be counted. Should this bill pass, the three day grace period would be eliminated.

The grace period was added in 2017 by near unanimous vote at the urging of then Secretary of State Kris Kobach, stating that mail service was delaying ballots from arriving by Election Day, and thus those votes were not being counted.

Supporters of SB 4 claim allowing a grace period provides ample opportunities for voter fraud. However, the Kansas Secretary of State website highlights the numerous safety measures used to verify the legitimacy of mail ballots; and according to the Heritage Foundation’s election fraud database, there have been no cases of voter fraud in Kansas since 2021 — the infamous case of voter fraud committed by former Republican Congressman Steve Watkins.

Despite advocates’ claims that this bill does not make it harder to vote, it does, in fact, do just that. Mail takes time to be processed, especially for the most rural areas of our state and for voters living out-of-state, who are usually young and either in the military or college. Not to mention the disabled and elderly Kansans who rely on mail ballots and will be systematically disenfranchised by eliminating the grace period.

Some opponents of the bill claim partisan motivation in the elimination of the grace period, arguing that it disproportionately affects Democrats, who in recent years have been more likely to vote by mail than Republicans..

According to early voting data collected by IKE Lab during the 2024 general election, 42.6% of mail-in-votes in Kansas were cast by Democrats, 39.3% by Republicans, and 17.4% by unaffiliated voters.

Looking only at ballots recorded after Election Day, Democrats likely would be at even more of a disadvantage should the law be changed.

Of mail-ballots that were received during the grace period (see data note below), 56.8% of them belonged to registered Democrats, 24.1% to Republicans, and 19.1% to unaffiliated voters.

These numbers make it clear that eliminating the grace period would have a measurable impact on whose votes are counted.

Passing SB 4 would not only eliminate a safeguard that has ensured thousands of legitimate votes are counted, but it would also disproportionately impact specific groups of voters, particularly those in rural areas, the military, and the elderly.

While concerns about election security should always be taken seriously, the safeguards in place already ensure the integrity of mail-in ballots. Rather than solving a real problem, this bill risks disenfranchising Kansans for the sake of political maneuvering.

A total of 9,399 ballots were included in the final vote report on November 12 that had not been included in the November 6 report.
