MCPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson College marked a significant milestone as it welcomed the largest incoming class in its history when fall semester classes began on August 21. The college enrolled 319 first-time freshmen, which is the largest freshman class on record.

This year’s freshman class grew 35%, with total enrollment up 5%. Overall enrollment was bolstered by a second year of increased retention.

“McPherson College continues to make great strides in growing enrollment despite a couple of challenging post-pandemic years,” President Michael Schneider said. “With new buildings going up on campus and program expansions, students recognize that McPherson College offers them a valuable academic experience. Additionally, McPherson College has some of the highest placement rates in the nation and offers students the ability to graduate with zero debt through the Student Debt Project.”

The college anticipates nearly 600 students will participate in the Student Debt Project this academic year. More than 400 students participated in the Student Debt Project last year and nearly 30% of seniors who participated graduated with zero debt. The debt project combines financial literacy education, employment, and mentorship building lifelong financial management skills. Participants commit to working part-time while earning their degree, and the college matches student earnings applied to their account at $.25 per dollar.

“I toured and researched other schools, but never found another program that did as much as the Student Debt Project,” said Luke Wood, a freshman from Shawnee, Kan. “The program was straightforward and easily accessible, and there is a wonderful staff available to answer questions. After paying my first semester, I can say the Student Debt Project has already benefited me immensely.”

Last year, the college matched more than $300,000 to support student efforts. Alumni and friends of the college serve as mentors who work with students throughout the year. Last year, nearly 50 working and retired professionals served as mentors in the program.

“Without the financial assistance from the Student Debt Project, I would be unable to afford college,” said Raina Decker, a McPherson area freshman. “The program allows me to prioritize my education during the academic year and continue life post-graduation free from financial constraints.”

In addition to reducing debt at graduation, nearly three-quarters of the students graduating in May 2024 had pre-graduation placements, whether starting careers, acceptance in graduate school programs, or joining military service. Additionally, 80% of McPherson College students gain internship experience during their time at the college.

This summer, the college also received substantial support for one of its newest academic programs. In June, Senator Jerry Moran announced he had secured $2.1 million in new, congressionally directed funding for McPherson College’s initiative to create an educational center in Kansas for Rural &amp; Community Health Science. The funding will modernize key parts of the Melhorn Science Hall, including several labs, and support professional development and statewide health outreach programs that enhance student experiences in health science.

Beyond academics and career preparation, students are excited about the new campus buildings and updates. The recently completed renovation and expansion of the Sport Center added more than 4,500 square feet of space, with an additional 2,000 square feet renovated. The Boiler House, a café offering expanded lunch and dinner options will open on campus soon.

The largest building project on campus, the Campus Commons, is the centerpiece of the significant campus update. Scheduled for completion in June 2025, this 55,000-square-foot building will serve as a hub for students with new dining, a coffee shop, a campus store, student clubs, activities, lounge spaces, administrative offices, and a new welcome center. It represents the largest-ever single investment in new buildings in the college’s 137-year history.

McPherson College with record freshman enrollment

PRATT COUNTY —&nbsp; A K-42 pavement reconstruction is underway at Sawyer, in Pratt County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the K-42/U.S. 281 junction to the east city limits of Sawyer.

The finish date for the work has been pushed back into November, according to an Aug. 22 update from KDOT.

During the work, K-42 will be closed through Sawyer, and motorists will be directed to an official state detour on U.S. 281, U.S. 54/400 and K-14.

KDOT uses state highways for official detour routes for safety, weight and maintenance concerns.

The first map below shows the approximate project location, marked with the red dot. The second map shows the detour route.

Vogts-Parga Construction, of Moundridge, is the primary contractor for the $1,597,038 project.

NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton Police Department recently acquired a new radar trailer to help remind drivers of the speed limit and draw attention to their driving. 

The trailer is currently in action in the 300 block of North Main. The red and blue lights blink if a vehicle goes over the posted speed limit of 20 mph. Staff will be moving the trailer to various areas around town to help encourage safe driving.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair not only wants to be Kansas' largest classroom, but also Kansas' safest.

Kansas State Fair general manager Bryan Schulz ensures that the addition of new cameras and security features on the fairgrounds should provide peace of mind.

"When you drive on State Fair Road, yes we do have new cameras out there, just for fair time," Schulz said. "We will have three cameras located in lots A and B, and they're already out there. Then we'll have two cameras in lot C. They're there for the protection of the people that are here."

The fair annually brings in over 300,000 visitors for the ten day event, including 330,044 last fall.

"The last Saturday of last year during the fair we had over 60,000 people on the grounds," Schulz said. "There is times where somebody is going to bump into your car and they're going to leave, and if we have a rough idea of where it is we can zoom in with these cameras. It's a protection piece as well."

Schulz is gearing up for his third year as the Kansas State Fair general manager and has continued to make safety one of his top priorities.

"Two years ago we invested almost $300,000 in cameras," Schulz said. "This year we did another probably close to a $100,000 in cameras, so we have about 69 cameras on the grounds. They have definitely paid for themself already."

The cameras in the parking lots do have the capability of scanning license plates.&nbsp;

"The reason we put the license plate readers on there is because at night when people come and go," Schulz said. "Then all of a sudden we have something happening, well we can see them on a camera and we can see a license plate. So one plus one equals you might be going to jail."

One more feature the cameras have are the ability to scan faces.

"We do have the ability to scan somebody's picture if we needed to," Schulz said. "We're using that more for the lost child or lost parent."

With the Kansas State Fair beginning in two weeks, Schulz and his staff are in final preparation mode.

"Now is where the rubber meets the road," Schulz said. "Final mowings are underway, starting to set up all the entertainment areas, all that kind of stuff, so now is when it gets really crazy busy."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced on Friday that "the time has come for policy to adjust". That means rate cuts are coming, most likely in September. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss spoke to Hutch Post before the announcement, but he was anticipating this and he's pretty sure he knows why they need to cut.&nbsp;

"They're saying it's because they defeated inflation," Goss said. "No, that's not the reason now. That may be partially true, but, well, it is true they defeated inflation, but they brought the economy down as well, and the economy, the overall economy is not doing well."

How fast will they cut? Powell wasn't clear.

"The real issue right now is, is it going to be a quarter percent cut or a half percent cut," Goss said. "We could have a half percent cut, depending. Now, what individuals we all need to be watching out for is those first-time claims for unemployment insurance on each Thursday, but also on the employment report, which is issued on September the 6th. Very, very important."

Unemployment rising could be another harbinger of a bigger need for a rate reduction.

"Back in the 90s, Alan Greenspan considered six percent full employment unemployment rate. It's not six anymore, and it depends a lot on what's going on in Washington," Goss said. "We now just, July, we had the largest federal deficit, second highest federal deficit for a July month ever, $244 billion. So the federal government's a lot of this, making it very hard to read these numbers, but a good number, I feel a good number is in the mid fours, but the problem is, it's going, it's rising, it's going to go beyond four and a half percent, and in my judgment, it'll go above four and a half percent before the end of the year. In fact, I think it'll hit four and a half percent on September the sixth."

If that does happen, then it's not out of the realm to see a 50 basis point cut later next month.

City of Pratt asking for water conservation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Clinic and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas are still at an impasse when it comes to 2025 rates for customers that have BCBS coverage through an employer.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/f9db6853-fae1-46d6-95c8-d7c3a92fb811">In a letter sent to local companies obtained by Hutch Post earlier this summer</a>, the Hutchinson Clinic announced then it will not be doing business with Blue Cross Blue Shield in-network next year. This decision, if it stands, will effect a little over 26,000 Hutch Clinic patients.

Spokesperson Kristi Zears for Blue Cross Blue Shield emailed Hutch Post Thursday with an update. That statement is below.

"As a long-standing partner with Hutchinson Clinic, we are disappointed with their decision to terminate the contract. This decision, which was shared prior to the release of the 2025 reimbursement rates,  limits provider choice for members in the Hutchinson area. We have had continued conversations with Hutchinson Clinic and have provided them an opportunity to reconsider their decision until September 3. We hope they will do what is in the best interest of the community. 

"As always, with nearly 100 percent of providers and hospitals in our network, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is committed to serving our members and helping them through their health journeys."

Hutch Clinic was also contacted and sent this response on Friday.

"The Hutchinson Clinic has been working diligently to analyze the complex Fee Schedule received from BCBSKS on July 31. The Clinic has requested a meeting with BCBSKS for the week of Aug. 26 to clarify some outstanding questions. Regardless of the outcome of this meeting, the Hutchinson Clinic will always prioritize patient care. Should we ultimately end up out of network with BCBSKS, the Hutchinson Clinic will provide affordable out-of-network options so our patients can continue seeking treatment with their physicians at our Clinic."

BCBS is still in network for employer-provided coverage through the remainder of 2024. This decision is not connected with Medicare Advantage coverage, as that is under a separate arrangement.

City of Haven seeking Municipal Court judge

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage told Hutch Post that the work that has been done by&nbsp;Director of Learning Services Megan Hett and&nbsp;Maintenance Director Chris Rohr to get the daycare and pre-K programs ready for the fall is something he is proud of.

"What they've done and then the people that work under them to make happen what's happened in Haven, when they're in a location in Yoder, in the amount of time," Idacavage said. "I was telling our board this a couple months ago that it's impressive, it's really impressive."

The work has facilitated continued enrollment gains for little ones.

"In our pre-K, I wanna say we're at 47," Idacavage said. "Then our daycare slots just over the summer and the work they did went from 60 to 80. We qualified for some expansion grants and then through that work that Megan and Chris and their teams did this summer to open up those spots allowed us to, qualified us for some additional funds that we'll be receiving in October to continue to do some capital type programs and expansions to the program."

Staffing is a continued issue as the programs grow.

"It's been difficult at times," Idacavage said. "I think we see that everywhere and when we have openings, we post them and it'll go through phases. We'll get some high quality applicants and then for a while and then we have some openings and then we might not get any for a while. With school starting back up, we utilize some high school kids that want to possibly go into early childhood or just enjoy being around kids and so we're able to fill some hours that way and just piece some things together."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Melissa Evans with Midtown at Avenue A in Hutchinson USD 308 is excited to see what the 2024-2025 school year brings. 

"Midtown is our alternative high school in 308," Evans said. "We serve kids freshmen through senior year. We have switched to an application process and we've capped our enrollment. What we found is there are a lot of kids in our district and our county that are looking for an alternative learning environment, and while we would love to serve all of those kids, we have to make sure we're ready to serve all of those kids. By going to an application process and capping enrollment, it allows us to really build some systems and really solidify what we want that alternative education to look like. This year we did an application process and we capped enrollment and we are currently full, which is really exciting."

There are opportunities for kids at Midtown who may have had some difficulties in the larger setting at Hutch High.

"We're getting to see some changes in our master schedule that we were really intentional about building and just some culture building time with our kiddos because it's a smaller setting," Evans said. "There is more of a, I would almost say a family feel. You get to know each other pretty quickly and we wanted to make sure we were really intentional about building in time to get to know the kids beyond what credits they need, beyond even necessarily what career they want to pursue."

The school had its first town hall meeting this week and they talked about a vision for the year.

"What supports do they need so that they can be successful beyond Midtown, and then what does success look like for them beyond Midtown," Evans said. "We talk a lot about college and career readiness and I think that that's still gonna be the focus for us, but being an alternative school, I think you get an opportunity to get even a little bit more creative and more personalized for those kids, which we're really excited about."

Alternative school ready to 'build some systems'

BUHLER, Kan. — The Red Dirt and Diamonds Music Fest to benefit Buhler baseball is Saturday,&nbsp;just South of 69th &amp; Regier in Buhler.

"We'll open the gates at 5 p.m. and the first act, which is local artist Wyatt Henson will take the stage at 6," said Bre Beals.

The fundraiser is to help Crusader baseball keep up with other programs in the state.

"We raise funds to help pay for some coaching staff, additional coaching staff for the high school baseball team," Beals said. "Then we also pay for things like pitching machines and equipment, on-deck circles, things like that. Some coaching clinics and classes for those guys to kind of polish up their skills. So we do lots of different things. The money that's raised goes right back into the baseball team."

A former HutchCC baseball coach will return as one of the musical acts.

"Scott Wolverton, who played for us last year, is back by popular demand this year," Beals said. "He actually recently moved to Nashville and is expanding his career out there, but has come back this weekend to play for us, and then we'll finish up the night with local band Petty Cash."

Grace Arbor neighborhood announces first park improvement

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — You might have noticed that in the past few weeks there have been some small changes in the zoo. Earlier this summer, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Inspection Team came out for a site visit (we get re-accredited every 5 years). During this visit, they made some recommendations for us to further improve the zoo. 

Two of those recommendations were adding shade for the animals in the mini farm and aviary as well as creating more habitat opportunities for some of our species. The Visiting Committee are peers from other AZA institutions. It is always great to have some different eyes on the zoo from professionals that haven't been to our zoo before. Having fresh eyes also helps us see new solutions that we might not have thought of to improve the well being of the animals in our collection. 

For example, we switched our swift fox/ringtail habitats. Previously, the swift fox exhibit had underutilized vertical space. On the other hand, our ringtail cats are excellent climbers. Although their habitat had some vertical space it has more horizontal space which is better for the swift foxes. Making the switch was a perfect fit for both pairs and they have been settling in quite nicely. Next time you visit the zoo, be sure to keep an eye out for our swift foxes and ringtail cats in their new homes.&nbsp;

Zoo makes changes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Planning Commission will meet as scheduled next week, but has canceled meetings that would have been Sept. 17 and Dec. 17 because of the change by the City Council to night meetings, as both meetings use the City Council chambers. 

The Hutchinson City Council will begin meeting at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month starting Sept. 3.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amanda Vega, a Circle Leader who went through the program at Circles of Hope Reno County, explained to Hutch Post where she was when she became a part of Circles.

"I was at work and had all these bills in front of me. And when I tell you, I was so overwhelmed with all these bills. My co-worker,  Anthony Frischenmeyer, he was just trying to live his best life and just trying to go to lunch. Well, he saw me just overwhelmed and I almost started crying because that's a lot. Like, I don't know. I didn't know how to budget or do anything like that because it wasn't something I was allowed to do before. So he told me, come to Circles. I said, why? He goes, just trust me on this. Just come to Circles, and if nothing, at least you get a dinner from it, and that's what I did."

Going to that first meeting was a turning point in this single mother's journey in taking care of her five kids.

"Going to Circles that night for dinner, everybody was just so welcoming," Vega said. "Nobody just judged you. Everybody was like, hey, it's good to meet you. Come on in."

Circle Leaders work with Allies, who are people in the community who can show them where different choices can point them in a different direction.

"What got me to the point is me working with my allies. I have the numbers guy, Kevin. He can tweak my budget and he'll tell me if I can do this, if I can't do this," Vega said. "Then when I finally had that emergency fund, when I had the emergency fund, Caroline was able to just go and say, this is what we saved it for. We can spend this money and fix this tire. We got this. We can do this. She really de-escalated the situation, and her husband came with the numbers and I was able to spend that money without freaking out because somebody who's never had a savings account or an emergency fund, like I held onto that, like with the death grip."

According to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/01/24/how-much-money-americans-have-in-savings.html">CNBC</a>, nearly half of Americans have $500 or less in their savings accounts, an amount that leaves them vulnerable to unexpected expenses, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobankingrates.com/banking/banks/how-much-money-do-americans-have-in-their-bank-accounts-in-2024/" target="_blank">GOBankingRates survey</a>&nbsp;of 1,063 U.S. adults conducted in November 2023.&nbsp;

Circle Leader explains process

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Haven USD 312 is giving some statistics on attendance as school gets started this fall, to help kids stay on track.

"It starts with just getting kids into the building, and our chronic absentee rate has dropped over the last few years as we've kind of got further away on this side of COVID, and so we're down at like 12 and a half percent, but we certainly wanna keep dropping that," said USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage. "Just sharing stuff with parents and helping educate our stakeholders."

Chronic absenteeism, as defined by the Department of Ed, is gone more than 10% of the time.&nbsp;

"For our kids, it's about 16 days, our kids go about 166 days, kind of depends on what happens with the snow in the winter, but so that's about 16 days that makes up that 10%," Idacavage said.&nbsp; "We've had that talk as an admin team too, you know, about, we don't need to get out of school for haircuts and things like that, you know, during COVID and, you know, the time after, when you were sick, we encouraged kids to stay home and now if maybe if you have a headache, you can come and do those things and kind of getting back to the times before. Making sure that we know it's important to be there."

Parents are notified if their kids aren't in school and they haven't heard from them.&nbsp;

"We just kind of see that at the high school level where our call will go out, letting parents know that kids weren't in first hour and they're not aware of it because they're, you know, high school kids, some of those are responsible for getting themselves to school," Idacavage said. "Keeping that line of communication open with parents and working together to make sure those kids are in school."

Haven USD 312 seeking to reduce absenteeism

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of East 1st Avenue and North Plum.

I usually do articles on commercial properties, but this residence has been so iconic for so long. The first photo is of 429 E. 1st.

It was built in 1888 by Rees R. Price, a railroad contractor and builder. He was also the president of the Western Salt Company, on the board of directors for two banks and helped build the Opera House. He died in early December of 1894 at the age of 36. His widow continued to live there until about 1915.

After that, many affluent families have lived there, including Louie Child (Davis-Child Motors), Robert Nelson (Nelson Mfg.) and Vane Meador (Meador Jewelry).

James and Carolyn Anderson purchased it in 1968 and made many improvements, including adding a bowling alley inside the old carriage house to the south in 1971. The second photo shows 429 E. 1st today — still a landmark, well taken care of inside and out, and owned by James and Carolyn A. Corrick.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Recreation Commission is thrilled to announce the upper pond at Dillon Nature Center is now fully restored and filled, thanks to the generous support of local donors and a successful collaboration with Evergy. The pond was dredged this past spring to restore its depth and now reaches a minimum of four feet, with some areas extending as deep as nine feet.

Dillon Nature Center supporter and DNC Foundation board member Steve Dillon spearheaded fundraising efforts.

“It’s wonderful to see the pond full again and ready for our community to enjoy as my family intended,” Dillon said. “This project is a testament to what can be accomplished when everyone works together.”

Donors rallied together to raise more than $285,000, which funded the dredging of the pond, as well as the restoration of certain bank areas while enhancing fishing habitats.

“We are deeply grateful for the generosity of all donors and the partnership with Evergy, along with the support of the City of Hutchinson, which ensured the success of this project,” says Tony Finlay, Executive Director of Hutch Rec. Finlay also extended a special thanks to the Hutchinson Fire Department for providing the hoses needed to transfer water from the Evergy wells to the pond.

Hutch Rec is working closely with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to stock the pond with fish in the coming months, making it a go-to location for families to enjoy recreational fishing in Hutchinson.

Finlay said the nature center will implement a new fishing policy, which follows the recommendations of the recently approved Dillon Nature Center strategic plan that was approved in December 2023.

“This policy will enhance community access and create more opportunities for families to enjoy fishing in Hutchinson,” Finlay says.

Dillon Nature Center pond restored and filled

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson talked to Hutch Post this week about the progress the district is making toward shaping the scope of a future bond vote.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson talked to Hutch Post this week about the progress the district is making toward shaping the scope of a future bond vote."There's really four areas we're focusing on with the bond," Johnson said.&nbsp; "Creating a sixth through eighth grade middle school environment, really focusing in on early learning. So that zero to three and three to five. How do we take care of three, four and five year olds in the early learning environment? And what's the right environment for them? Daycare, the zero to three, that's a piece we wanna focus on. Then enhancing our elementary schools. We have a little bit of inequities in our elementary school. Some have two gyms, some don't. So then the kitchen becomes a gym. We want to do that and put some storm shelters in there and upgrade our elementary schools. The early learning task force met over the summer and a middle school task force met over the summer. We have one more meeting to wrap up the middle school piece. And at that point then the board has already decided that they would pursue $110 million bond. Now we need to look at all of those different projects and how do they fit within that $110 million. I'm hoping that mid-September, October, we've got that ironed out and we're moving forward."The actual vote will likely be in 2025.&nbsp;"I think it'll probably be early spring," Johnson said. "Kind of a late winter, early spring probably is where we'll be."In addition, the current YMCA building next to the Salthawk Activity Center will revert to USD 308's ownership once it is no longer used as a Y, which will likely happen sometime in the next couple of years, but at this point anything done with that space is not in the scope of the bond.
